A resistência à corrosão e mecânica dos aços inoxidáveis duplex dependem da distribuição de fases, portanto, é fundamental a compreensão das transformações microestruturais que ocorrem na zona termicamente afetada (ZTA) em função do aporte de calor em processos de soldagem. A fim de investigar a evolução microestrutural no aço inoxidável duplex SAF 2205 durante a soldagem, foram simulados na Gleeble dois ciclos térmicos com aporte de calor de 15 e 30 kJ/cm, considerando a temperatura de pico de 1350°C, seguido de têmpera a 500 e 250°C. As microestruturas na condição de como recebido e da ZTA simulada foram caracterizadas através de microscopia óptica (MO) e de microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Foram utilizadas diferentes técnicas metalográficas para a caracterização da microestrutura e identificadas três diferentes morfologias de austenita: nos contornos de grão, austenita Widmanstätten e a austenita intragranular, assim como diferentes frações volumétricas destas fases.

It is now 38 years since the publication of the first edition of "Extractive Metallurgy of Copper" by Professor W.G. Davenport and the late Professor A.K. Biswas. The text book would be issued in a total of five editions, soon became the standard for students and those in industry. Interestingly it was published at the onset of great change in the industry. This was a time when sulphur dioxide controls in the USA were introduced, and almost simultaneously, world oil shocks caused significant increases in the cost of fuel - all leading to efforts to adopt new technology and move away from the reverberatory furnace, which had no potential for sulfur capture and required large amounts of fuel. At the time of publication of the book, new processes such as the Noranda Process and the Mitsubishi Process were in their infancy, while flash smelting (which was first commercialized in 1949 at Harjavalta, Finland) had made significant in-roads in boosting copper output, with some 22 new flash smelters licensed by 1976. Computer technology and associated process control techniques were rudimentary compared to systems today, available physico-chemical data remained largely in tabulated format and needed to be manually entered into the main frame computers of the era, while modeling techniques common today had not yet been developed. The copper industry has therefore seen immense changes since the time of this textbook: world tonnage of smelted copper has risen from 7.34 million tonnes/year in 1976 to 16.7 million tonnes/year in 2012, over a two times increase. Technologies such as the El Teniente Process, or Top Submerged Lance technologies, typified by the ISASMELTTM, not commercialized at the time, now treat large tonnages of copper concentrate in a single furnace. Advanced heat and mass balance software and thermochemical modeling are now used extensively to examine chemical and physical characteristics for process design and to support process optimization. These changes in the industry have been chronicled in subsequent editions of the book. This paper looks at the issues and problems seen in 1976 and over the intervening years, and compares this with the challenges facing the industry with the available tools and technologies today. Some ideas looking into the future are also discussed in the paper.

The SDSU tunnel and underground station are the first of these type facilities to be constructed by the Metropolitan Transit Development Board. Because there is no previous experience, and because tunneling activities are associated with some risk, he MTDB has undertaken a very proactive and wide reaching program to identify and control risks during construction. Finally, because the tunneling activity and underground station is on the San Diego State University, MTDB is working closely with their staff to identify construction impacts and mitigation’s, and thus ensure a quality project for both agencies.

Thermodynamic values for scandium and its compounds are very sparse. This is evident upon examination of any of the commonly used compilations of thermodynamic data. For example, National Bureau of Standards Circular 5004 lists only four heat of formation values, two free energy of formation values, and four heat-capacity values for scandium compounds. The entropy of crystalline scandium is one of the most fundamental values that has been lacking. This Bureau of Mines paper reports heat-capacity data for scandium metal in the temperature range from 50° to 298° K., together with the entropy value at 298.15° K. derived from these data through application of the third law of thermodynamics.

Scientists at the U.S. Bureau of Mines are studying iron aluminides as possible substitutes for stainless steels to reduce the Nation's dependence on imported strategic and critical materials. In a Bureau investigation on the mechanical properties of Fe-28Al, it was found that the material's machining properties were significantly improved at slow tool and feed speeds. Machining techniques normally used for brittle materials failed or were costly. Further experiments using a 5-in (12.7-cm) mill cutter with carbide inserts, operating dry at minimum machining speeds, produced visually smooth sample surfaces with no tool damage. As a result of these experiments and a review of published data on hydrogen embrittlement of iron aluminide under tension, non-water-based (e.g., sulfur-based) lubricants were chosen for production machining. Four-flute, 3/4-in (19-mm) carbide end mills were used at slow speed under lubrication. This latter procedure reduced tool wear and breakage by a factor of 2. Machined surfaces and specimen cross sections were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy to detect microcracking. Tensile tests gave the expected yield and ultimate strengths, indicating that no degradation by low-speed machining occurred. This study extends this work to show that the alloy can be machined at higher speeds using high-speed steel end mills, and that water-soluble cutting oil is a suitable lubricant and coolant.

Commercial flotation plants operate on a continuous basis that is not simulated closely by the batch testing methods widely used in Bureau of Mines laboratory studies of flotation, Batch methods indicate whether a particular separation is possible but provide little or no information about the rates at which such separations can be effected in continuous operation, Therefore, laboratory equipment suitable for testing on a continuous basis was assembled for an investigation of a number of the operating variables that influence the flotation of coal. The results of these tests lead to the following conclusions: 1. Flotation recoveries were markedly influenced by variations in the percent solids in the feed, However, the relation between these variables is complex and depends on the particular coal and operating conditions used. Flotation rates generally increased with increased cell concentrations.

Chairman-Baker-presented a resolution on the conduct of the war, to which objections were made. It was referred to a special-committee; Charles Whiting Baker, Charles Warren Hunt, and Calvert Townley, for re-drafting and presentation later in the meeting. The revised resolution submitted by this committee led to further discussion and as no agreement could he reached, the matter was laid on the table.

I have to express my .surprise and must send a note of warning concerning the use of polyurethane foam as described in a paper by R.N. Torbin and R.F. Kovar, entitled "Innovative Shaft Lining Method," published in your February 1989 edition. In September, 1986, 177 miners lost their lives when they were exposed to fumes downwind from a fire in a tunnel lined with polyurethane foam. Whilst polyurethane exhibits reasonable fire retardent properties in small-scale tests, mass use in a tubular configuration, exacerbated by the furnace effect of cross-radiation, can lead to a rapid, uncontrollable conflagration. I do not wish these comments to detract from the engineering achievements of the authors but rather to sound a loud warning as to the application of the system. Any shaft designed for human access- be it for transport or shaft work - and any intake airway, should not consider the use of polyurethane foam. It only needs a slip with a cutting torch or an electric fault to initiate a disaster. Many countries have banned or restricted the use of polyurethane foam in the workings of a mine and maybe alternative foams (e.g. phenolics) can be used or developed

Research and development into options for CO2 sequestration are discussed including carbon storage in forests, and removal of CO2 from flue or fuel gas in power stations, and its disposal.

This bulletin presents the results of 36 tests made on a 468-horsepower Edge Moor boiler fired with pulverized coal at the Oneida Street Station of the Milwaukee Electric Railway & Light Co., Milwaukee, Wis. The tests were made by the fuel section of the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the research department of the Combustion Engineering Corporation. Illinois coal was used as fuel; the furnace, burners, and feeders were designed by the Locomotive Pulverized Fuel Co. The object of the tests was to determine what over-all boiler efficiency could he obtained with pulverized coal under various conditions of furnace operation and with coal of different fineness and moisture content. The investigation was thorough. The pulverized coal, as it was supplied to the furnace, was weighed in specially designed tanks placed on platform scales. Twenty-nine of the tests were of 24 hours duration, three of 16 to 18 hours, and four of 12 hours. All tests are reported excepting two-8 and 20-which had to be stopped abruptly, No.8 because a motor actuating the coal-feed screw burned out and No. 20 because of trouble with the feed pump. Tests 1 to 27, inclusive, were made with round burners and tests 28 to 3Rwith spreading burners. In the first nine tests a large excess of air was supplied in an effort to prevent the ash fusing at the bottom of the furnace. In tests 10 to 16 the supply of excess air was reduced in order to get a high efficiency, regardless of the slagging of ash at the furnace bottom. Tests 17 to 27 were made with a water screen about 10 inches above the bottom of the furnace, to make possible the burning of coal with a small supply of excess air without the ash fusing at the bottom of the furnace. Tests 28,29, and 30 were made without the water screen and with a small supply of excess air, and tests 31 to 38 with a water screen around the walls near the bottom of the furnace. Tests 32, 33, 34, and 35 were run with coarser coal than that used ordinarily at the plant. Tests 36,37, and 38 were made with undried coal.

The comparison between J Visman and C O Ingamells’ works with P M Gy’s works has been the object of intense debates in the past. Such negative debates inevitably resulted in a loss of many good opportunities. The author’s long experience in applying works of these three authors led to the pragmatic conclusion that it is relatively easy to integrate everything Visman and Ingamells created into the Theory of Sampling; therefore, it is suggested that the compatibility has been vastly overlooked, and a correction for such anomaly is recommended. It is important to emphasise that Visman and Ingamells works may be beneficial and provide relevant, harmonious additions in some areas, and ultimately offer attractive possibilities to sampling practitioners. Such additions may enhance our capabilities to predict sampling difficulties by using a stronger strategy and to design better sampling experiments that would allow us to further understand the heterogeneity of minor constituents, and especially trace constituents. Basically, the suggested integration is essential for sampling trace constituents in the environment, in food, in chemicals and in the pharmaceutical industries.CITATION:Pitard, F F, 2017. A eletro-obtenção constitui em um importante processo na recuperação dos principais metais produzidos através de processos hidrometalúrgicos (i.e. Cu, Ni, Au, Co, Zn), pois permite a obtenção de depósitos catódicos de elevada pureza a partir de soluções aquosas contendo o metal. O presente trabalho investigou a eletro-obtenção de zinco, a fim de avaliar a influência da gelatina, um aditivo orgânico, na eficiência de corrente e na qualidade do metal depositado no catodo de alumínio. A caracterização dos depósitos de zinco através do MEV revelou que, na presença de concentrações crescentes de gelatina até 40mg/L, houve diminuição da quantidade de poros ocasionados por evolução de hidrogênio na superfície do zinco depositado, contudo, em concentrações de 80mg/L, os poros voltaram a aparecer. Além disso, notou-se que diferentes concentrações de gelatina não alteraram a forma dos cristais de zinco, porém provocaram redução do tamanho de suas plaquetas hexagonais, à medida que a concentração de gelatina aumentou, mostrando efeito de refino de grão, em comparação à solução livre da adição de gelatina.

[Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCR's) have been widely utilised as fire-resistant dielectric coolants; in electrical equipment used in mining applicants, including transformers, capacitors, electric motors, and electromagnets. In addition, PCB's have been used in hydraulic fluids and heat-transfer fluids and are present in many oil-filled transformers. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently banned the manufacture of PCB's and equipment using PCB's, and imposed strict requirements on the continued use and disposal of existing PCB equipment. This manual discusses the EPA requirements, suggests ways to decrease the risks resulting from continued use of PCR equipment, and surveys the non-PCB equipment that is available as replacements for the PCB electrical equipment presently used in mines.]

The application of similarity analysis derived from regional geochemical mapping data to the location of Ni-bearing intrusions was tested in southwest Finland, where a well-known nickel belt is situated. Samples of till from the vicinity of the Vammala and Kylmakoski Ni-Cu deposits, which were collected independently of the Geological Survey of Finland's regional geochemical mapping programme, were used to provide geochemical modelling data. The data consist of the aqua regia-leachable concentrations of 20 elements from the less than 0.06-mm fraction of glacial till. The variables used in the similarity analysis were selected on the basis of a factor analysis in which the method of oblique rotation was used. A hierarchical clustering of the modelling samples produced two main groups. The first group was described as the "nickel deposit environment model" and the second as the "nickel deposit location model". The data for the standardised variables were compared sample by sample with the model data by similarity analysis using the Simana program with a cos theta measure of pattern similarity. The nickel deposit environment model delineated the known Ni belt and indicated an extension to the east. The nickel deposit location model identified target areas of reasonable size with the greatest potential for Ni ores within the nickel belt

"The design of an appropriate pre-grouting program can be the difference between a successful tunnel construction and an expensive on-the-go repair. However, current grout design relies heavily on rulesof- thumb and outdated charts. The geotechnical investigation is rarely targeted towards grouting design and the final grouting decisions are made based on fines content or soil classification. The current paper presents an experimental study performed to determine the optimal grout for a tunnel in soft ground below the ground water table (GWT). The testing program consisted of sieve analysis and undrained static triaxial tests on reconstituted sonic samples. Rheological tests were used to compare the different grout mixes and identify best candidates before performing one-dimensional permeation tests. Pressure and volume measurements during the permeation tests, along with the unconfined compression strength results on the permeated soils, helped evaluate the filtration potential for the different grouts and select the optimal grout.INTRODUCTIONConstruction of the Millwoods Double Barrel Replacement Project commenced in 2009 and was expected to be completed by 2015. To facilitate ongoing city development in south Edmonton, the City implemented construction of a major sanitary trunk network along 91st Street and 30th Avenue. The project involved the design and construction of approximately 1.2 miles (2 km) of 7.8-ft (2,400 mm) sanitary tunnel and 2.1 miles (3.4 km) of 11.5-ft. (3,500 mm) and 9.5-ft. (2,900 mm) storm tunnel. Part of the project also involved the conversion of the existing double barrel storm and sanitary trunk to full sanitary service, and reconnecting the local storm sewers from the double barrel pipe to the new storm tunnel. The tunnels range in depth from 26-ft. (8 m) to 115-ft. (35 m) and are being installed using a one pass system with precast concrete segmental liners."

Until 1956, drill and blast was the only way to excavate rock. In that year, a tunneling machine using disc type cutters economically bored a small Toronto tunnel. Its amazing 105 ft/day set a new world record and set the stage for a new industry. The Disc Cutter Role in Excavation Mechanical excavation of hard rock is by now deeply ensconced in the heavy civil construction industry. All over the world, from the Swiss Alp Melange to Hong Kong Granite, to New York Gneiss, huge Tunneling Boring Machines (TBMs) create transportation, water and sewer tunnels. Powerful machines, boasting as much as 6000 hp, bore through rock, excavating in excess of 1400 tons per hour. The tool that makes this tunneling phenomenon possible is the single blade, rolling disc cutter. These hardened steel discs, from 15 1/2 to 19 inches diameter are arranged on a rotating cutterhead, to cut concentric circles in the rock. As the machine is propelled forward under great pressure, rock below each cutter is crushed. But the efficiency of the cutterhead is derived from the science of cutter spacing (distance between cutter paths). The majority of the rock excavated is not crushed, but flakes off in chips and chunks. No pick, tooth, or drag type cutting tool can duplicate the performance of a disc cutter. The economic use of drag type tools is limited to as low as 5,000 psi UCS rock strength in massive formations. In weakly bonded, foliated rock, drag tools do better, but are still limited to rock generally less than 15,000 psi.

The paper outlines the development of a solvent extraction process for the recovery of scandium, yttrium, thorium, and heavy lanthanides from waste sulphate liquor at the Port Pirie uranium treatment plant. A summary is given of known solvents for these elements, including the recently developed alkyl-phosphoric acid esters which are applicable to sulphate solutions.A kerosene solution of di- (2'-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (EHPA) has been suggested by some workers as a suitable solvent for fractionation of the lanthanides. Experimental work with this solvent showed that it could be used for initial recovery of the above elements from low concentrations in the complex sulphate liquor. In particular, scandium could be recovered as a high grade product by extraction with 0·lM EHPA, followed by a purification strip with 9N sulphuric acid, and final stripping of scandium with sodium hydroxide solution.To enable alkaline stripping to be used successfully, the kerosene solution of the reagent was modified by the addition of a small proportion of nonanol. Experimental work included laboratory scale batch tests and small pilot scale continuous tests.A proposed extension of the process for the separate recovery of individual heavy lanthanides, yttrium, and thorium is described.INTRODUCTIONAt the Port Pirie uranium treatment plant of the South Australian Government, large volumes of "barren liquor", free from 'uranium, are at present run to waste. This "barren liquor" results from sulphuric acid leaching of Radium,Hill uranium concentrate, followed by separation of solid residues and removal of uranium from the clear solution by ion exchange. Otimizar o consumo dos insumos energéticos e coprodutos é uma tarefa de suma importância na busca de competitividade das usinas siderúrgicas. O gás de alto forno é um importante componente dessa matriz energética e a maximização do seu consumo reduz sensivelmente os custos com a compra de outros combustíveis. Nesse cenário, o controle de nível dos gasômetros, equipamentos existentes nas siderúrgicas que exercem um papel fundamental na distribuição desse gás, não é trivial. Distúrbios e variações entre geração e consumo dificultam o desafio de manter a segurança operacional e ao mesmo tempo otimizar o consumo. Procedimentos operacionais e técnicas convencionais de controle não são suficientes para evitar perdas com a queima desse gás nas tochas de segurança (flares) dos altos fornos. Esse trabalho apresenta um caso real do uso de técnicas de controle preditivo MPC (Model Predictive Control) e regulatório para a distribuição em tempo real do gás de alto forno para os principais consumidores na Vallourec Tubos do Brasil em Belo Horizonte.

The system Ti-Cr has been re investigated From 40 to 100 pct Cr. The high-temperature modification of TiCr, was found to exist in the temperature range from 1365 where it terminates in the eutectoid reaction TiCr,(TI)* — HE chromium-rich region of the Ti-Cr system was investigated by Vogel and Wenderott,' Mc Quillan,' Van Thyne et dl.,' and Cuff Duwez and Taylor determined the crystal structure of the low-temeperature modification of TiCr, to be fcc a = 6.943A and Levinger' discovered the existence of a second (high-temperature) modification of TiCr, and determited its crystal structure to be hexagonal a = 4.932A, c/a = 1.617i. No information was obtained as to the temperature range over which each modification of TiCr? existed; therefore the present investigation was initiated. I) Experimental Techniques Alloys employed for the delination of this system were prepared from iodide titanium and high-purity chromium. The purity of these materials is as follows: Iodide titanium: purity 99.99 pct; major impurities—carbon 0.0001 pct; oxygen 0 to 0.002 pct; nitrogen 0 to 0.002 pct; silicon 0 to 0.005 pct; manganese 0.001 pct; copper 0.001 pct (Foote Mineral Co., Lot 609-29). Chromium #1: metallic purity 99.997 min.; interstitial content—oxygen 0.27 to 0.46 pct; hydrogen 0.028 to 0.038 pct; nitrogen 0.0002 pct (Ave-quipo Inc.). Chromium #2: purity 99.9 pct; major impurities—carbon 0.01 pct; oxygen 0.013 pct; nitrogen 0.02 pct; silicon 0.01 pct; sulfur 0.03 pct; iron 0.01 pct (Fulmer Research Institute Ltd.). A total of sixteen alloys of thirteen different compositions was prepared in the range from 40 to 95' *All percentages are given in weight percent. pct Cr. The compositions of the alloys prepared were as follows: Ti-40, 45, 50, 60, 62, 64, 66, 68, 70, 80, 85, 90, and 95 pct Cr. Two buttons were prepared of the 66, 90, and 95 pct Cr alloys. The 40 pct Cr and one of the 66 pct Cr alloys were prepared from the chromium # 2. All the other alloys were prepared from chromium #1. The alloys were arc-melted as 25-g buttons in a copper-hearth glass-walled furnace7 under an inert atmosphere of high-purity helium. The alloys were sintered at 250 amp and melted twice at 350 amp for 30 sec with the buttons being turned over between melts. Weight losses during melting were determined and in the range 45 to 68 pct Cr they were found, in all cases, to be less than 1.25 pct of the total alloy weight. A number of the high-chromium alloys shattered during cooling from either the first or second melt, which made the weight loss considerably larger than usual. The 70 and 80 pct alloys lost approximately 5.7 pct of their total weight, the 85 pct alloys 1.5 pct, the 90 pct alloy 2 pct, and the 95 pct alloy 3 pct. However, it is felt that the actual composition of the alloys in this region is probably within approximately 1 pct of the intended composition, as a large portion of the material lost was that due to shattering after melting. Nominal compositions were therefore used in plotting data and referring to the alloys. The alloys were cut into specimens, wrapped in molybdenum sheet, and encapsuled in argon-filled quartz or Vycor tubes for heat treatment. The heat-treatment times and temperatures are given in Table I. The specimens were quenched in iced brine (I.B.Q.) following heat treatment.
