DOMESTIC OUTPUT of white arsenic, As2O3, was derived entirely as a byproduct of smelting arsenic-containing copper ores by The Anaconda Company at Anaconda, Mont., and American Smelting and Refining Company at Tacoma, Wash. Arsenic metal was not produced. Consumption, and Uses.-Most of the white arsenic produced in 1964 was consumed in manufacturing lead and calcium arsenate insecticides. In the 12 year period since 1951 the production of lead arsenate insecticide has varied between 7,800 tons and 4,900 tons, indicating that lead arsenate has maintained its position in competition with organic insecticides.

Excellent metal quality, with lower power requirement, is attained in electrorefining titanium by using internal heating of the fused-salt bath. An internal heater provides more effective heat utilization, simplifies structural components in cell design, and prolongs cell life by eliminating direct application of heat to the cell container. This Bureau of Mines report covers one phase of the research in progress at the Electrometallurgical Experiment Station at Boulder City, Nev., for improving the techniques and lowering the total power requirement for electro-refining titanium metal.

"It is widely accepted that the type of grinding media has an impact on the grinding chemistry and subsequent flotation behaviour of the sulphide minerals being separated. There are countless laboratory investigations demonstrating that inert grinding media produces more oxidising pulp potentials, reduced levels of grinding media corrosion products and superior concentrate grades and valuable metal recoveries. However, taking these results to industrial scale has proven difficult.Work conducted at the Ernest Henry Mine, in north western Queensland, Australia, at laboratory and pilot plant scale clearly indicated that using a high chrome grinding media resulted in significant improvements in both copper and gold recoveries. However, advancing this work to plant trial represented considerable financial and technical risk to the mine.This paper provides details of the protocol developed and used during the high chrome grinding media plant trial. It describes the test regime employed to measure changes in pulp chemistry, and the statistical methodology utilised to interpret the results. The work also highlighted the need for close cooperation between the metallurgists on site and the researchers conducting the trial.To date, the trial has produced excellent results: indicating that the copper recovery has improved by about 2 percent. The successful application of high chrome grinding media to the Ernest Henry ore has increased metal value by $18.7 million USD per annum based on current spot price for copper.INTRODUCTIONTheoryThe application of electrochemically inert grinding media to mineral systems has been extensively studied (Table 1). The preferred orientation and earing characteristics of ZS aluminum were studied. An empirical correlation was obtained relating earing behavior and variation of mechanical properties for face-centered cubic metals. Strain-ratio mecsurements for ZS were found to be in good agreement with Hill's theory of plastic anisotropy. DIRECTIONALITY in sheet metals may be revealed by earing in a cupping test, or by the variation of mechanical properties of tensile specimens taken at different angles to the rolling direction. However, no simple correlation appears to exist between earing and variation in mechanical properties in metals and alloys studied.1-5 Aluminum of commercial purity (known as 2S, with a specified minimum of 99.0 pct Al) cast by the direct casting process was chosen in the present investigation since ears at 45° or 0°, 90° can readily be obtained. Preferred orientation is often the principal cause of uneven metal flow, such as earing, and variation in mechanical properties. Consequently, the preferred orientation characteristics of 2s aluminum were initially studied using both X-ray diffraction and micrographic techniques. The variation of mechanical properties with angle to the rolling direction was next determined in an effort to clarify the apparent lack of correlation of earing behavior with mechanical properties for face-centered cubic metals. Strain-ratio*5,8 measurements were finally conducted to determine first, if the maximum values of the strain ratio occurred at the earing positions, and second, if Hill's theory of plastic anisotropy7 is applicable to other face-centered cubic metals such as aluminum. Detailed treatments, working, and heat treating are not given in this paper since this study is not concerned with the methods to produce earing, but to correlate earing with other properties and characteristics of the material. The percentage of earing was measured using the formula specified by the x—Y Aluminum Association, -------- X 100 = pct earing, where x is the height of the ear and y is the height of the valley from the bottom of the cup. Preferred Orientation Characteristics of 2S X-ray Studies: Beck and coworkers8 have determined that the rolling texture of 2s after 95 pct cold reduction may be approximately described by four equivalent ideal orientations near (123) [121]. Also, the recrystallization or annealing texture of 2s aluminum consists of four components of the (123) [l21] type, retained from the rolling texture, and of a (100) [001] or cube texture component." Fig. 1 illustrates the typical appearance of deep drawn earing cups with the corresponding X-ray diffraction patterns. The X-ray patterns were taken with copper radiation using the structure-integrating method'" in which the specimen is scanned during the X-ray exposure. The rolling direction was vertical and the rolling plane was perpendicular to the horizontal X-ray beam. It was found that an increase in the retained rolling texture component resulted in a greater 45" ear height, while an increase in the recrystallization texture component (i.e., cube texture) caused greater 0°, 90° earing. X-ray diffraction studies of 2s cold rolled to final thickness followed by a final anneal have shown that the rolling texture, and also the retained component of the rolling texture after annealing, are increased with greater cold-rolling reduction. The preferred orientation characteristics of 2s sheets given an intermediate anneal between cold rolling followed by a final anneal were found to depend on the position of the intermediate anneal during cold rolling. For instance, three identical samples of 2s homogenized ingot, each 1 in. thick, were given the following cold-rolling and annealing treatments: 1—50 pct reduction, intermediate anneal, 96 pct reduction to 0.020 in. and a final anneal; 2—75 pct reduction, intermediate anneal, 92 pct reduction to 0.020 in. and a final anneal; and 3—90 pct reduction, intermediate anneal, 80 pct reduction to 0.020 in. and a final anneal. The intermediate and final annealing treatments consisted of a 70°F per hr heating rate, held 6 hr at 800°F and air cooled. Typical X-ray patterns after each of these treatments are shown in Fig. 2. Foi identificada uma trinca no convertedor 2 da ArcelorMittal Tubarão em junho de 2013 durante início de carregamento de gusa, esta se localizava na solda entre o cone inferior e o flange do fundo. A análise abrangeu a avaliação dos danos no vaso, à análise da fratura, análise de material, onde foi verificado que a trinca não foi decorrente de trinca preexistente, nem de degradação do material ou imperfeição de solda. Foi construído um modelo 3D do convertedor considerando-se todos os detalhamentos pertinentes à uma análise termo estrutural. Foram analisadas as seguintes situações: Refratamento conforme projeto do fornecedor – junta de papelão; Projeto de refratamento incluindo influência da junta de dilatação natural 0,2 mm existente no refratário; Carregamento térmico; e situação corrente do projeto considerando proteção de soleira. De acordo com os resultados, verificou-se que a causa da falha do convertedor esta relacionada a esforços oriundos da expansão térmica do refratário.

INTRODUCTION The analysis and design of underground structures to resist vibratory motion due to earthquakes has been of interest to engineers for several decades. The dynamic stability of a powerhouse cavern was considered in the 1960s (Campbell and Dodd, 1967). About the same time, the designers of the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit system developed procedures for analyzing the subaqueous tunnels placed under San Francisco Bay and the tunnels excavated along the land portions of the alignment (Kuesel, 1969). Japanese designers developed fairly sophisticated procedures for analyzing subaqueous tunnels during the late 1960s and early 1970s (Kuribayashi et al., 1974). In the past decade, proposals to site important critical underground facilities in regions with moderate to high seismic activity have increased the interest in earthquake engineering of underground structures. Seismic designs or seismic studies have been conducted for rock caverns for storage of petroleum or location of power plants (Yamahara et al., 1977; Glass, 1976), buried tanks for fuels or rad¬ioactive waste (Fukushima et al., 1977; URS/Blume, 1976), tunnels for disposal of nuclear waste (Yanev and Owen, 1978; Wahi et al., 1980), and urban mass transit tunnels (Monsees and Merrit, 1984). One of the greatest drivers of the interest in seismic analysis and design of underground structures has been the proposals to dispose of high-level nuclear waste in mined repositories some 300 to 600 m (approximately 1,000 to 2,000 ft) below the ground surface. In 1979, the authors, in conjunction with Professor Tor Brekke, presented a paper on an evaluation and design procedure used in a study of a proposed nuclear waste repository (Owen, Scholl, and Brekke, 1979).

Com o estudo realizado em artigos técnicos e acadêmicos e vivência no ramo industrial, ficou evidente uma deficiência no desempenho dos sistemas de controle regulatório das plantas industriais. Parte dessa deficiência é proveniente da falta de engenheiros de controle para auditar as malhas de controle regulatório. Foi realizado em um forno de tratamento térmico, um trabalho de auditoria das malhas de controle regulatório, baseando-se em uma metodologia já existente na literatura. Levantou-se informações do processo do forno como, os controladores automáticos, o sistema de aquisição de dados e a infraestrutura de rede de automação e por seguinte, as implementações dos PID's no CLP. Após essa contextualização, métricas para avaliar o desempenho inicial das malhas foram utilizadas e então, o funcionamento dos elementos de controle utilizados no forno foram diagnosticados através de ferramental estatístico e análise dos sinais na ferramenta PIMS. Adquirido o conhecimento necessário sobre o processo e o diagnosticado de maneira concisa, ações corretivas e de otimização foram realizadas e propostas com o intuito de otimizar o desempenho das malhas de controle. Por fim, os índices de desempenho do sistema são recalculados e os valores comparados com os valores pré auditoria, concluindo que pode ser possível melhorar alguns dos principais termos adotados no negócio como redução de custos, aumento de produtividade e sustentabilidade.

Located in downtown New York City, this project necessitated an innovative conveyor design for successful muck removal. This paper will discuss the technical challenges and engineering solutions of the muck transport system which consists of every commonly recognized version of a belt conveyor. The elaborate system includes a TBM conveyor integral to the back-up system, a wall-mounted extensible conveyor, a crown-mounted transfer conveyor, a floor-mounted fixed-length conveyor, a pocket-belt vertical conveyor, three cascading overland conveyors, and one radial stacker. The most challenging design element was an over-land conveyor featuring a box truss for muck transportation over Northern Boulevard while simultaneously going under the Queens Plaza railroad viaduct. An overview of the project is provided along with the following topics: developing final plans from the proposal concept, interfacing with existing works, communication with the joint venture, and complying with local regulations.

This study was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the effect of steel reheating practices in burning natural gas on the amount of silicon required to prevent the formation of copper on steels containing up to 1 wt-pct Cu. Formation of copper, which causes surface hot shortness, was readily prevented by as little as 0.3 wt-pct Si and by 2 vol-pct excess oxygen in the furnace atmosphere when reheating steels containing up to 0.8 wt-pct Cu. Up to 0.8 wt-pct Si content and careful control of reheating conditions were necessary for steels containing 1 wt-pct Cu. Best conditions for these steels were reheating to 2,200° F (1,205° C) in burning gases containing 2 vol-pct excess oxygen, and then to higher temperatures in gases of 6 vol-pct excess oxygen. Slag and mold wash were not detrimental on steels reheated for 8 hr by a soaking-pit-type furnace schedule, but they were problematical on steels heated for 2 hr by a pusher-type furnace schedule. The effect of silicon contents on scaling rates also was determined.

Many narrow-vein gold deposits are characterised by a high to extreme nugget effect and the presence of coarse gold. They rank amongst the most difficult of deposits to produce an accurate and precise resource estimate. This contribution presents a case study from the Nalunaq Gold Mine in Southern Greenland. The mine commenced operation in May 2004 and is currently operating at a rate of 400 tonnes per day, to produce about 100 000 oz gold per annum from a total resource base of 1.2 Moz. Mineralisation is characterised by quartz veins that are hosted within a shear zone that is continuous over about 1000 m. The principal orebody is the Main Vein structure, which ranges up to 3 m in width, maintains an average dip of 35¦SE, and contains significant gold grades (1000s g/t Au). Gold particles are often visible, with 25 per cent being greater than 250 microns in size. Variography using underground development samples indicates a nugget effect of about 75 per cent. For the 2005 resource estimate, a 2D metal accumulation ordinary kriged block model was used to produce a global grade for the Target and South Blocks of the Main Vein. Grade control chip-channel samples are collected from æshantyÆ drive footwalls, and used as the basis for both the kriged block model and to determine the grade of individual stope blocks by peripheral weighted averages. Geology plays a key role in mining efficiency, given the locally variable nature of the ore zone.

Através desta nova tecnologia para mecanismos de válvula gaveta de panela, estamos apresentando um novo conceito de trabalhabilidade, reduzindo o esforço físico do homem, através de um equipamento simples, robusto e de fácil manuseio dos refratários durante as trocas de placas e válvulas.Com este novo conceito para abertura e fechamento do mecanismo, reduzimos de forma expressiva o número de atividades do operador e com isso reduzimos o tempo para liberação da panela, proporcionando para a aciaria, uma maior disponibilidade de equipamento e certamente menor tempo de parada ou perda de sequencial durante a troca dos refratários. Considerando um projeto mais robusto, com menor número de peças sobressalentes, conseguimos reduzir de forma expressiva, o custo de manutenção deste mecanismo, visto que a deformação ou desgaste das peças deste equipamento estão dimensionados para suportar as mais adversas condições operacionais de uma usina siderúrgica. Através de um sistema de molas altamente preciso, garantimos uma pressão uniforme dos refratários, garantindo total segurança durante o processo de lingotamento contínuo, porém com um grande diferencial de segurança, quando comparado a outras tecnologias de mecanismos, ou seja, através de um sistema visual (GAP), o operador poderá avaliar a cada corrida, as condições gerais do equipamento (desgaste, deformação, irregularidades, etc.), tomando a decisão de afastar ou não o mecanismo, antes de liberá-lo para próxima corrida, garantindo assim, uma total segurança do homem e equipamento.

The Bureau of Mines conducted bench-scale research to evaluate materials which showed potential as low-cost reductants for use in the ironmaking industry. These materials were lignite, subbituminous coal, coal char, tree trimmings, refuse--derived paperboard, used crankcase oil, and peat. To compare their effectiveness, the materials were tested in the reduction roasting of nonmagnetic taconite and, except for oil and peat, in the reduction of iron oxide pellets to metallized pellets. Reduction was conducted in a 18-cm-diameter, rotary drum, which was externally heated in an electric furnace. Over 92 pct of the iron was magnetically recovered from a nonmagnetic taconite after roasting with any of the reductants, but greater quantities of reductant were required to achieve this when the waste materials were used. The fossil fuels were also more effective for metallizing pellets, although metallizations above 90 pct were also obtained with tree trimmings and refuse paperboard. However, refuse paperboard had to be frequently recharged to the furnace because it depleted rapidly.

This is a progress report summarizing more than 5 years of a long-range Bureau of Mines research program. The purpose of this program has been to investigate the fire and explosion properties of Green River oil shale in the Bureau's Experimental Mine, in laboratories, and in the field. The lean limits of explosibility of oil shale dust, by small-and large-scale tests, are reported as a function of grade, ignition source, and particle size. A limited number of laboratory tests on the autoignition of oil shale dust layers and the spontaneous combustion tendencies of oil shale are described. Moderate-scale rubble fire tests were conducted to determine flame spread rates as a function of ventilation flow. With the aid of a system to continuously monitor methane emissions in a deep oil shale mine, the characteristics of the methane flow are reported as a function of ventilation and blasting procedures, and are compared with gas yields from core samples. Tentative predictions as to the emission of the methane to be expected in deep oil shale mines, far from the outcrop, are offered. Brief reference is made to a parallel investigation into the fire and explosion hazards of oil shale mining and processing by a Bureau contractor; detailed results of the latter investigation are to be found in the contractor's reports.

Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralisation related to mafic and ultramafic rocks, held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. The Zinca area was chosen as a suitable location for an investigation of the weathering and secondary dispersion of platinum group metals from the Zone. It was concluded that platinum is immobile while within weathered rock, its mineral phases tending to alter from primary sulphides and tellurides to secondary Pt-Fe alloys. Palladium is variably mobile in weathered rock. In stream sediments Pt occurs mainly as small, dense, discrete particles, giving rise to a nugget effect, whereas Pd probably occurs as much finer particles or chemically adsorbed on to a suitable substrate. Pt shows a rapid decrease in sediments downstream from mineralisation, whereas Pd has a much slower downstream decay

This paper describes a situation that many drilling and blasting contractors have found themselves in – a client?s fear of the use of explosives. In the summer of 2007 Blasting Services Ltd was asked to undertake some drilling and blasting work in an abandoned quarry that was being restored for a housing development. Previous quarrying operations had left a series of overhangs that were considered unsafe and required removing. The site contractor considered that the best and safest way to carry out this work was by drilling and blasting. Blasting Services Ltd, with the technical assistance of Exchem Explosives, designed a drilling and blasting regime to accomplish this work with a series of trim blasts. The design took into account the close proximity of a structure in very poor condition and the imposed vibration limit of 6.0 mm/s (0.24 i.p.s.). The faces were profiled, holes drilled and explosives ordered. A few days before the first blast was due to be carried out the client decided that the poor condition of the nearby structure meant that the use of explosives could not be permitted. This decision was made despite the blast design indicating that the vibration level would be well below the 6.0 mm/s (0.24 i.p.s.) limit.

A maioria dos materiais poliméricos sintéticos apresentam superfícies quimicamente inertes, isentas de porosidade e baixa energia de superfície. Este trabalho tem como objetivo realizar a modificação superficial do substrato têxtil de forma a aumentar a sua molhabilidade. Os tecidos de poliéster são hidrofóbicos e, por isso são desconfortáveis aos usuários, pois a fibra não absorve o suor do corpo, outro fator que é prejudicado pela hidrofobicidade da fibra de poliéster é o tingimento das mesmas. Portanto, tratamentos superficiais vêm sendo utilizados para minimizar esse problema e o plasma é uma técnica que se mostra bastante eficaz. O plasma ao interagir com a superfície do substrato provoca alterações químicas e físicas melhorando suas propriedades. Portanto, através do plasma é possível alterar as propriedades físico-químicas das superfícies de tecidos de poliéster, tendo como resultado o aumento da hidrofilidade dos mesmos com o incremento de grupos funcionais polares e o aumento da rugosidade em sua superfície. As amostras foram tratadas em um reator de plasma de barreira dielétrica a pressão atmosférica, em diferentes tempos de tratamento e voltagem. Após as funcionalizações as amostras foram submetidas ao teste de capilaridade, a fim de observar a melhora na hidrofilidade. Todas as amostras tratadas tiveram aumento na molhabilidade, com exceção, as amostras tratadas com 10 kV, onde não houve alteração.

The first test pile for the carrier pier and south wharf at NAVSTA Puget Sound was driven on December 27, 1989, and the final pile was tested on February 26, 1990. Implementation and modification of the test pile program were done by the owners (WESTDIV and ROICC-Everett), the engineers (ABAM and Hart Crowser), and the contractor and his subcontractor (General Manson Joint Venture and GRL). The site is located as shown on Figure 1. SUMMARY OF THE SOIL CONDITIONS A soil profile along the pier is shown as Figure 2. The soil units can be generalized as follows: ? Upper Silts - Fill, sandy silt, and clayey silt extending from the mudline to an elevation of about -80 feet; ? Intermediate Sand - A medium dense to very dense silty sand unit which is about 30 feet thick near the shore, but thins and disappears offshore; ? Lower Silts - Sandy silts and clayey silts in a medium stiff to stiff condition; ? Deep Sand - A very dense overconsolidated sandy soil encountered at an elevation of about -145 feet.
