Optimum conditions are given for chloridizing pyrite, marcasite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, stibnite, and covellite with chlorine gas. The formation of metal chlorides is affected by the time and temperature of chloridizing, and by particle size of the sample. Chloridizing data also are given for chemically precipitated antimony (III) sulfide and copper (II) sulfide.

"Foreword by Emily SarverAssistant professor, Mining and Minerals Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VAThe Mineral Processing Division hosted its fifth Student Poster Contest during the 2014 SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Salt Lake City, UT – and, by all accounts, it was a huge success! This year, the contest more than doubled in numbers of individual entries and schools represented. A total of 30 students participated, including 23 graduates and 7 undergraduates, representing 13 US and international institutions: Colorado School of Mines, Michigan Tech, Missouri University of Science and Technology, Montana Tech, New Mexico Tech, South Dakota School of Mines, University of Kentucky, University of Utah, Virginia Tech, West Virginia University, Autonomous University of Chihuahua (Mexico), UNAL Medellin (Colombia), University of British Columbia (Canada). In addition to constructing their posters, students submitted abstracts and gave short oral presentations highlighting their research. Based on tallied scores from all three components of the contest, the judging panel selected 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners at the undergraduate and graduate levels, which were announced during the MPD Luncheon on February 26.In the undergraduate division, University of Utah’s Lucas Pich was awarded the 1st place prize for his poster “Solid-liquid mixing studies in lab-scale flotation tank using electrical resistance tomography.” His extended abstract is included in this issue of Minerals & Metallurgical Processing. Joshua Chidester, also of Utah, won 2nd place for his poster presenting “Evaluation of detectors for radiotracer RTD measurement by MCNP.” And Lucas Rojas-Mendoza, of UNAL Medellin, took 3rd place for his poster on “Preg-robbing in Colombian gold ores.”In the graduate division, 1st place went to Caelen Anderson, of the Colorado School of Mines, who also placed in this contest in 2012 and 2013! The 2nd and 3rd place prizes were awarded to Jacob McDonald and Joseph Halt, respectively, both of Michigan Tech. Extended abstracts describing the work of these up-and-coming researchers are also included in this issue.The 2014 Contest was chaired by Emily Sarver (Virginia Tech) and Lisa Schlink (Freeport-McMoran Copper and Gold, Inc.). IN examining steel under the microscope, one is constantly confronted with structures that are difficult to interpret. Recently, in a collection of samples for exhibition purposes, the writer found apiece of open-hearth runner metal, 2 in. (50 mm.) in diameter, that had been fractured for use as a sample of cast-steel structure. On polishing and etching a section for the purpose of photographing a field to typify the microstructure of steel in the "as cast" condition, a variety of structures was found (Fig. 1) so arranged as to arouse interest at once. For a distance of about 0.065 in. (1.6 mm.) from the skin of the runner, normal ingot structure was found (Fig. 2); this was followed by a zone, about 0.215 in. (5.5 mm.) wide, of considerably lower carbon content in which occurred a most pronounced Widmannstättian structure (Fig. 3); from this point on to the center of the runner, the metal was again of normal ingot structure (Fig. 4). O moinho vertical normalmente é dimensionado através da aplicação de um fator de eficiência sobre o Índice de Trabalho de Bond (BWI) ou sobre o consumo específico de energia (kWh/t) obtido através de teste em moinho de bolas de laboratório. Para confirmar o dimensionamento do moinho vertical são realizados testes em escala piloto com grandes volumes de amostras. O presente trabalho apresenta uma metodologia para simulação de moinho vertical através de testes de moagem em escala de laboratório utilizando um moinho de bolas convencional e amostras bitoladas em diferentes faixas granulométricas. A amostra de minério de ferro estudada foi utilizada em uma campanha de testes em escala piloto com moinho vertical. As simulações realizadas utilizando a metodologia de Austin apresentaram muito boa correlação com os resultados dos testes em escala piloto.

Aços com microestrutura completamente perlítica são utilizados para fabricação de componentes submetidos a condições severas de carregamento mecânico frequentemente combinado com atrito. Estes aços têm desempenho mecânico afetado principalmente pelo espaçamento interlamelar da perlita. O objetivo deste trabalho foi demonstrar os benefícios do uso da Microscopia de Força Atômica para determinar o espaçamento interlamelar da perlita de um aço eutetóide laminado a quente. Para tal, imagens da microestrutura de amostras retiradas na direção longitudinal e transversal à laminação foram obtidas e processadas com auxílio de um Microscópio de Força Atômica. Como resultado, destaca-se o fato da técnica utilizada ter se mostrado uma ferramenta versátil para caracterização quantitativa do espaçamento interlamelar da perlita. Foi observado espalhamento dos valores medidos do espaçamento interlamelar principalmente influenciado pelas condições de resfriamento do aço durante a transformação austenita-perlita.

Dentro da caracterização tecnológica do minério de ferro, percebe-se o aumento da realização de ensaios de moagem em escala de laboratório, em função do empobrecimento das principais jazidas de minério de ferro e consequentemente redução do grau de liberação do quartzo. Esse é o principal mineral de ganga do minério de ferro, e para sua liberação é necessário moagem. O Centro de Pesquisas Tecnológicas da Vale tem como procedimento a execução de ensaios exploratórios de moagem para a definição do tempo necessário partindo de um top size de 2 mm até obter um produto com determinado % retido em 0,15mm, a malha de controle da moagem primária. A definição desse tempo era realizado por tentativa e erro, ou seja, fazia-se uma moagem em um tempo inicial, e posteriormente variava-se o mesmo até alcançar a granulometria desejada no produto moído. Este processo torna a atividade morosa, sendo necessário a realização em média de até 5 ensaios para a definição do tempo de moagem. De uma forma simples aplicando a equação de Donda-Rosa utilizando o tempo de moagem, a determinação do tempo de moagem para chegar à granulometria desejada é normalmente atingida na segunda moagem. Os resultados obtidos até o momento são promissores, mostrando ser possível a utilização dessa equação para prever o tempo de moagem. Com isto, obteve-se um ganho de produtividade uma vez que a quantidade média de ensaios exploratórios necessária reduziu-se de quatro para no máximo dois.

Nos últimos anos as siderúrgicas têm investido na melhoria de seus processos e produtos buscando à produção de clean steels, onde menor nível inclusionário é almejado. Neste contexto foi objetivado neste trabalho, em um primeiro momento, realizar uma revisão bibliográfica afim de buscar um modelo que pudesse relacionar a composição química da escória com a capacidade da escória de remover de forma eficiente as inclusões, garantindo assim a limpidez de aços. A partir destes dados, buscou-se, como segundo objetivo, avaliar alguns resultados de escórias industriais e compará-los com o proposto pelo modelo. A viscosidade e molhabilidade foram os parâmetros de maior impacto neste estudo, sendo a viscosidade obtida através da termodinâmica computacional com o FactSage e a molhabilidade estimada a partir do modelo de Nakajima.

O presente trabalho apresenta os resultados de têmpera a partir da temperatura de transformação da austenita para ferrita em um aço microligado seguido de revenido de 200 a 550°C. Foram avaliadas as fases presentes no equilíbrio termodinâmico em função da temperatura de formação para verificar quais fases foram solubilizadas nas condições de tratamento térmico. Após os tratamentos de têmpera e revenido, foram realizadas caracterizações microestruturais e de microdureza. Os resultados indicaram presença de ferrita poligonal em conjunto com constituintes displacivos como ferrita acicular, bainita e martensita em baixa fração volumétrica. Ambos os constituintes apresentaram variação de microdureza com o revenido e apresentaram envelhecimento na temperatura de 550°C. Este envelhecimento foi atribuído à precipitação de carbonetos tipos M7C3 e MC com base nas simulações termodinâmicas.

A bulk analyser based on the gamma-ray resonance scattering process can be used to give a rapid and accurate measure of the percentage by weight of copper or nickel averaged over a large mass of sample, typi- cally 20 kg. It is shown that for a bulk sample containing about 3 wt.% Cu, crushing to -25 mm is the only sample preparation requited for analysis to within an error of about 0.06 wt.% Cu (errors quoted are one standard deviation). A comparison of bulk analyser and con- ventional assays on the same bulk samples can be used to estimate the sample preparation errors in the conventional methods. The squared deviations between bulk analyser and conventional assays are approximated by the sum of variances in sample preparation, conventional analysis, and bulk sample analy- sis. The sample preparation error was esti- mated as 0.26 wt.% Cu for samples crushed to -2 mm before splitting, 0.08 wt.% Cu for samples crushed to -0.35 mm before splitting, and 0.04 wt.% Cu for the average of 15 grab samples from bulk samples which had been crushed to -2 mm. The average copper grade for each group of samples was about 1.7 wt.%. Results are presented which show that

A series of eleven full-scale production blasts has been earned out in a limestone quarry to study the effect of delay interval and its precision on overall blasting performance. The quarry employed ANFO and cartridged aluminized emulsion in 75 mm diameter boreholes with 2.6 m burden and 2.9 m spacing on a 6.7 m bench. Both V-cut and echelon designs were studied. The types of detonators tested were regular short period electric detonators with expanding delay intervals, a more precise pyrotechnic-based electric detonator (EXADET) with a fixed (25 ms) delay interval, and the ultra-high precision electronic delay detonator (EDD) with constant (but site-selectable) delay interval. The various techniques employed to assess the blast results are described, and the performance of the three types of detonators compared. The use of both EXADET and EDD lead to improved blast results in echelon design. Of the three delay intervals (25 ms, 38 ms, and 50 ms) studied, the best results were obtained with EDD with a 38 ms delay interval, which translates into a delay of 38 ms/m of effective burden. The results also show the need for modification of current V-cut delay designs to derive full benefits from these high precision detonators.

The utilization of high sulfur Illinois coal by utility plants has been decreasing since the enactment of 1990 Clean Coal Air Act Amendment. Illinois coal producers can make their coal saleable by offering the choice of taking the combustion by-products from the utility plants and placing them in the abandoned sections of their mines. To be competitive, however, coal producers need to select an environmentally acceptable transportation-handling-placement system through which the cost-per-ton of by-product disposed can be minimized. In this paper, a few such systems are presented. The favorable operating range of each system is determined in terms of distance and tonnage. A case study is given whereby cost analysis is conducted for an underground coal mine receiving by-products from two Illinois utility plants.

A five steps remediation program was commissioned in 1998 for the acid generating Lorraine mine site, located in the Témiscamingue region, Quebec, Canada. It included, as the main expenditure, a cover with capillary barrier effects (CCBE) used to limit oxygen migration. After construction of the cover, instruments were installed on site to monitor the CCBE performance. Modified oxygen consumption tests were also done to measure the oxygen flux through the cover. Results from water content and suction data, measured from 1999 to 2003, show that the capillary barriers effects are effective and that the water retention layer stays near saturation throughout the years. Oxygen fluxes estimated from monthly water content measures are generally below 10 g/m2/year. Results from modified oxygen consumption tests made on the site give almost similar oxygen fluxes. A two dimension numerical model of the Lorraine mine site was also constructed to verify that mathematical models could predict realistically the in situ conditions on such a large scale site. Numerical results obtained for three years show a good concordance between measured and calculated values. The results obtained form these different evaluation methods for the performance of a CCBE concur and confirm the efficiency of this cover in limiting acid mine generation.

This paper describes the numerical analysis of some geotechnical factors influencing the application of Longwall Top Coal Caving (LTCC) method. The study was aimed at comparing the differences in stress distribution in the chain pillars of the face ends and caving mechanism of the top coal in LTCC method between the flat and inclined thick coal seams. The outcomes from this analysis will benefit mine planners in designing the location of roadway development in the next longwall panel. In addition, results from the study will extend the understanding of caving mechanism in top coal section when applying the LTCC method (with the direction of the longwall face is down dip, retreating along strike) in inclined coal seams. The results demonstrate a clear effect of dipping factor on cavability of the top coal and on the stress distribution in the chain pillar of the face ends.

Solid-state electrochemical measurements by three alternative experimental procedures were made with the cell FeO, Fe3O4 |Zro.85Cao.15O1.85 |Cu| Zr0.85CaO.15O1.85 | FeO, Fe304 to establish the solubility and diffusivity of oxygen in solid copper in the temperature range 800" to 1030°C. The solubility of oxygen in solid copper and the diflusivity of oxygen in solid copper Dgu = 1.7 X 10-2 exp(-16,000/RT) Cm2/sec were determined and confirmed in alternative experiments. The enthalpy of solution of oxygen in solid copper equals —10,000 cal per mole; the partial excess entropy of the oxygen atoms in the Cu-O dilute solution is approximately the same as that found for interstitial atoms in other metals. The diffusivity of oxygen in solid copper is consistent with that expected for an interstitial atom. RELIABLE values for the saturation solubility N(s) and diffusivity DO of oxygen in solid copper have not been unambiguously established in the literature. Following three early determinations by others,1"3 Rhines and Mathewson4 reported that the solubility of oxygen in solid copper increased from 0.007 at. pct 0 at 600°C to about 0.015 pct at 1050°C. Phillips and skinner,, using essentiially the same analytical procedure, reported that the solid solubility increases from 0.0018 at. pct 0 at 550°C to about 0.0075 pct at 1050OC. The only previous value for the diffusivity of oxygen in solid copper was reported by Ransley.6 Ransley deoxidized Cu-Cu2O alloys in an atmosphere of carbon monoxide gas to yield a solubility-diffusivity product. He used the solubility data of Rhines and Mathewson to calculate the diffusivity values. Another method for obtaining the solubility-diffusivity product (N(s) DO) is by measuring the widths of internal-oxidation zones in copper alloys as reported by Verfurth and Rapp.7 However, the calculated N(S)Do products depend upon the alloy content of the specimen, so that the internal oxidation of copper alloys does not follow ideal internal oxidation kinetics. As a result, unequivocal values for the N(s) DO product were not obtained by this procedure. A solid-state coulometric titration technique similar to that employed in this work was introduced by C. Wagner8 to study the dependence on silver activity of the Ag/S ratio in silver sulfide in the temperature range of 160" to 300°C. Similar experiments have been carried out by C. Wagner and co-workers9-11 to study the stoichiometry range of silver and copper tellurides, cuprous sulfide, and cuprous selenide. Numerous authors have carried out electrochemical measurements with a solid oxygen-ion-conducting electrolyte to determine the solubility and/or diffusivity of dissolved oxygen in several liquid metals.12-l6 Rickert and Steiner17,18 have used solid-state electrochemical measurements to determine the diffusivity of oxygen in solid silver from 760" to 900°C. Two different cell geometries were used. In the cell of linear geometry Fe, FeO | ZrO2 + (CaO) | Ag + [0 (dissolved)] [1] oxygen diffused from the interior of the silver electrode to the silver/electrolyte interface where the oxygen activity had been lowered from a fixed initial value to practically zero by the application of voltage to the cell. The diffusivity of oxygen in solid silver was determined from the solution of the diffusion equation and the time dependence of the cell current. However, this determination of the diffusion coefficient depended upon a knowledge of the solubility of oxygen in solid silver. A cylindrical geometry was used for the cell Pt, O2(Po2 = 0.21 atm) | ZrO2 + (CaO) | Ag + [0 (dissolved)] [II] which also allowed the diffusivity of oxygen in solid silver to be determined. These values were in agreement with other available data.l9 Recently, Raleigh20,21 used a method involving the measurement of diffusion-limited currents in a cell involving the AgBr solid electrolyte to determine the diffusion coefficient of silver in Ag-Au alloys at 400°C. Diffusivity values on the order of l0-14 sq cm per sec were measured in the alloy composition range 10 to 60 at. pct Ag in a single experiment. From numerous electrical conductivity and galvanic cell measurements,9'22"26 the solid solution Zr0.85 Ca0.15 O1.85 has been established as an electrolyte with predominant oxygen ion conduction over a wide range of intermediate and high oxygen activities. For interrelating the thermodynamics and the kinetics of the dissolution of oxygen in solid copper in this investigation, a galvanic cell was constructed with FeO-Fe3O4 as the reversible reference electrode, the Zr0.85Ca0.15 O1.85 electrolyte, and a pure copper specimen under-saturated in oxygen as the other electrode. "Blast vibrations are essentially a strain/stress wave propagating in rock or structures inthe vicinity of a blast. However, blast vibration has always been quantified in terms ofpeak particle velocity (PPV) or acceleration (PPA), and a meaningful relationshipbetween blast vibration and strain/stress has not been established. The determination ofthe dynamic strain from blast vibration may improve quantification of blast damage andselection of a blast vibration limit for critical structures or high walls. Dynamic strainrelates to rock mechanics or material strength more directly than peak particle velocity(PPV). This paper documents a method to calculate the three-dimensional dynamic straintensor from recorded blast vibration signals. The method is based on determination of thedisplacement gradient at a point of interest for each time instance during the vibrationduration. The method to calculate dynamic strain is applicable to generic seismicwaveforms including near and far field blast vibration from a production blast withmultiple blast holes. In order to minimize measurement errors the specifications of thespacing between monitors and the sampling frequency of the vibration recording aredescribed."

Increasingly new interceptors or new Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) projects require connections to existing tunnels. More often than not, the existing facilities are old, in poor or questionable conditions, without proper construction records or as-built drawings. Many cannot be easily inspected unless major construction effort provides flow by-pass for safe access. This paper provides general guidelines on how to approach the problem of assessing the condition of old tunnels, how to plan and design the connection with limited physical assessment, how to develop the scope of work for the bid documents and how to provide geotechnical guidelines and designs for the bid documents.

Presented is a rigorous solution for the three-dimensional stability analysis of vertical shafts (excavations) subjected to the self-weight of the soil based on the upper-bound theorem of limit analysis approach. A rigid-block translational collapse mechanism is assumed, with energy dissipation taking place along planar velocity discontinuities. This mechanism is optimized to obtain the critical failure mechanism giving the lowest factor of safety for stability of shafts. Based on comparisons with other solutions, the method is generally found to be accurate in predicting the stability of vertical cuts.

During the lifetime of an open pit mining project, each stage from exploration activities to exploitation and mine closure produces disturbances on the mining region. Mined land reclamation plans establish constructive solutions to rehabilitate the disturbed areas. Open pit mining as an effective method for exploitation of a wide range of orebodies especially for massive reserves of shallow metallic substances has exhaustive and harmful environmental effects on the mining project region. Nowadays, closure and reclamation stage in a mining project is emphatically enforced by the relevant environmental protection regulations in many countries. It is therefore obvious that closure and reclamation costs of an open pit mining project, as costs of other stages of project, must be estimated to enter the planning and design processes in open pit mining. Post-mining land use is the most important factor to recognise closure and reclamation costs. Thus, using a model to define optimal land use in planning phase of an open pit mining project is necessary in this regard. In this project a model was developed to define optimal land use regarding different sections of open pit mines such as pit(s), waste dump(s), tailing pond(s), roads, areas for onsite facilities and free land zones which are not mined. TOPSIS and PROMETHE techniques were applied to create the developed model. Lumber production was recognised as the optimal post-mining land use for the pit area of the case study in this project.

Construction blasting has allegedly been the cause of property damage in the following situations: (1) When the detonation of the shot hurls rock and debris into the air that causes property damage upon impact; and (2) When property owners notice cracks in their walls and foundations after they experience the momentary vibrations that coincide with the detonation of the shot. The current state of the law for both these situations is firmly established. Blasting is classified as an abnormally dangerous activity, for which the blaster is held strictly liable, whether the damage is the result of flying debris or vibrations and concussions generated by the blast. It is when the alleged blasting damage is supposedly from concussions and vibrations, however, that the courts usually reach the wrong result. The typical scenario involves property owners that thoroughly investigate their property after feeling blast generated vibrations, and find cracks that they believe did not exist beforehand. Most often the truth is that the property owners have never noticed these cracks before because they have never looked that closely before. Any structure has a certain number of cracks due to a variety of causes, such as settlement overtime and temperature and humidity changes.
