"The paper describes the results of the study of gold-copper flotation concentrate atmospheric oxidation at different sizes of material, varying oxidation time, with air or oxygen blow. The study showed the low rate of sulphide oxidation during oxidation of flotation concentrate at a feed size (P98 -74 µm). The coppery recovery into solution was 48%; the recovery of gold by subsequent cyanidation reached 86%. Preliminary flotation concentrate grinding to P98 -20 µm provided oxidation of 90% of copper minerals, 80% of arsenopyrite and 15% of pyrite. The gold recovery by atmospheric oxidation of a fine-ground flotation concentrate increased by 59%, from 36% to 95%, the NaCN consumption reduced by 21 kg/t, from 30 to 9 kg/t. INTRODUCTION Processing of sulphide gold-copper ores and concentrates using conventional cyanidation technology results in higher reagent consumption and lower gold recovery. Destruction of sulphide minerals and extraction of copper from a processed product prior to cyanidation is essential for improving efficiency of precious metals recovery and reducing main reagents consumption. Atmospheric oxidation (AO) is one of the most promising hydrometallurgical methods of refractory gold-copper concentrates processing, along with biooxidation and pressure oxidation. The nature of this approach lies in oxidation of sulphides at 90-95°C, in acidic or alkaline conditions, with bubbling of oxygen or air, after preliminary ultrafine grinding (1-4). The following reactions of sulphide oxidation occur during atmospheric oxidation of a gold-copper flotation concentrate. Pyrite is oxidized with the formation of ferric sulphate (1) and elemental sulphur at low temperatures (2), whereas some portion of elemental sulphur reacts to form sulphuric acid: FeS2+3,75O2+0,5H2O=0,5Fe2(SO4)3+0,5H2SO4; ?G=-1144,02 kJ/mol (1)"

Fairbanks Gold Mining, Inc. (FGMI) began blending and processing True North ore at their Fort Knox mill on April 12, 2001.Gold extraction subsequently dropped from 88% to 71% during the last week of April 2001. 25% of the gold values remaining in the leach tailings were gravity recoverable free gold. Significant quantities of stibnite and arsenopyrite were also identified in the tailings. In laboratory bottle roll tests, the gold extraction from a composite of leach circuit feed collected during the same period was 72.6%, when leached at an average NaCN concentration of 0.16 g/kg. The extraction increased to 82.4% and 91.7% with 0.5 g/kg NaCN, and 0.5g/kg NaCN plus 0.075 g/kg Pb(NO3)2, respectively. A passivating layer surrounding liberated gold particles and resulting from sulfide mineral dissolution, likely contributes to reduced gold recovery, which can be substantially increased by the addition of lead nitrate. Lead species remain in the solid residues after leaching and were not mobilized using Meteoric Water Mobility Procedure.

Filtration systems with disposable filter elements (DFEs) are used in the underground coal mining industry to control particulate matter emissions from diesel-powered permissible and nonpermissible coal mining equipment. This study was conducted in underground mine conditions to evaluate three types of high-temperature DFEs used in those filtration systems. The DFEs were evaluated for their effects on the concentrations and size distributions of diesel aerosols and concentrations of nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Those effects were compared with the effects of a standard muffler. The experimental work was conducted directly in an underground environment using a unique diesel laboratory developed in an underground experimental mine. After an initial DFE degreening period, the filtration system with all three DFEs was found to be very effective at reducing total mass concentrations of aerosols in the mine air. The effectiveness of DFEs in filtering aerosol mass was found to be a function of the engine operating conditions. The efficiency of the new DFEs significantly increased with accumulation of operating time and buildup of diesel particulate matter in the porous structure of the filter elements. A single laundering process did not exhibit substantial effects on performance of the DFE elements. The effectiveness of DFEs in removing aerosols by number was strongly influenced by engine operating mode. The concentrations of nucleation mode aerosols in the mine air were found to be substantially higher for both DPFs and DFEs when the engine was operated at high-load modes than at low-load modes. Initial heating of certain DFEs resulted in visible white smoke and substantially elevated aerosol number concentrations. The effects of the DFEs on total nitrogen oxides (NOX) concentrations were found to be minor. The NO2 fraction was found to be generally lower for the DFEs than for the muffler. The engine-out NO2 fraction of the total NOX was found to be substantially higher for low-load modes than for high-load modes.

Using recent thermodynamic data for the carbides and oxides of tantalum, columbium, and vanadium, the stable solid phases aboue 1300°K and at 1 atm CO(g) pressure in each M-C-O system have been determined. Pourbaix-Ellingham diagrams have been constructed and are used to estimate the minimum temperatures necessary to obtain these metals by carbothermic reduction under reduced pressures. TANTALUM, columbium, and vanadium react with carbon to form the M,C and MC carbide phases. The M,C carbides have narrow homogeneity ranges, but the MC phases possess considerable ranges of homogeneity.' The free energies of formation of the MC carbides were recently measured, and those of MC and M2Ccarbides have been estimated., (The notations MC and MC denote, respectively, the carbide compositions at the carbon-rich and at the metal-rich boundaries of the homogeneous MC phase.) In this paper, these carbide data are combined with thermodynamic data for the oxides to predict the stable phases in the Ta-C-O, Cb-C-O, and V-C-O systems at specified temperatures and oxygen pressures. M-C-O PHASE DIAGRAMS The solid phases in equilibrium above 1300°K for each M-C-0 system are shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. Above 1300°K, the vapor would consist entirely of carbon monoxide; and these phase diagrams were obtained by specifying the vapor pressure of CO(g) to be 1 atm. The temperature at which any two solid phases become unstable is specified along the two-phase equilibrium lines in each diagram. To simplify the diagrams, all solid phases in the Ta-C-O and Cb-C-O systems are represented as stoichiometric compounds. The Palo Pinto limestone pools of Jones and Shackelford Counties were defined and almost fully developed during the year. A new Palo Pinto limestone pool was apparently discovered when the K. B. Nowels NO. 1 Pardue, S.F.I. and W. survey, south central Haskell County, was completed for a small well in Palo Pinto limestonc at 3395 to 3421 feet. In Haskell County, Amerada Petroleum Corporation's C. J. Kleiner, J. M. Cass survey, drilled to the Ellenburger with a total depth of 5607 ft., where it was abandoned. A Bluff Creek sand field of undetermined size was discovered by the Fain-McGaha No. 1 Dawson-Conway, P. G. Holcomb survey, which was chompleted for 37 bbl. at 1496 feet. The Cook field was extended by the Roeser-Pendleton B-113 Cook in sec. 113, E.T.R.R. Co. survey, the well being completed for 510 bbl. from Cook sand encountered at 1545 to 1568 feet. Several shallow pools of minor importancc mere also discovered in Shackelford County during the year. In Jones County the Lewis and the Steffens fields, in block 15, T. and P.R.R. Co. survey, were further developed during the year but the limits of the Steffens field were not definitely defined. The most, important discovery in Jones County was the Guitar field, where most of the wells that had been producing from the Cook sand were deepened to the Hope limestone, a new producing horizon. In Taylor County, the Bowles field, see. 28, B.A.L. survey, was defined arid proved to he of minor importance. The Goldsboro and Novice area, ill northwest Coleman County, continued to hold considerable interest because of the developments near the town of Novice, where new Ieases continued to be opened for production. Hot briquetting is a reliable, fully developed industrial concept for the passivation of direct reduced iron produced with the various processes of direct reduction. During hot briquetting, the large specific surface area of direct reduced iron is drastically reduced, and therefore the well-known problems caused by reoxidation and overheating are avoided. Even the shipping instructions published by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) confirm that Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) can be handled and shipped without special precautions. From the mid-1970s until today, after extensive pilot testing of the technology, a number of industrial plants for the hot briquetting of direct reduced iron have gone into operation. Additional hot briquetting plants for already established but also for new direct reduction processes are tinder construction or in different stages of planning. This paper describes the characteristics of HBI and its current industrial application for various Direct Reduction Processes.

Introduction During the past 10 years, energy costs in mining have risen from about 4% to as much as 25% of total production cost. When combined with declining ore grades, these costs exert inordinate stress on mine productivity. Industrial engineering techniques have traditionally been aimed at improving manufacturing facilities productivity, but they have been applied to mining as pressure for productivity improvement has increased. These techniques can perform four useful functions for mining operations by improving methods, equipment selection procedures, energy use through scheduling, and managing energy costs rather than being managed by them. This article discusses some of the standard techniques for productivity improvement, and how they can be adapted to perform these four functions. Pre-Production The best time to seek high productivity is when a mine is being planned. During pre-production, when most options are still open, an optimum mine design is achievable. At this time, major equipment selections are made, the layout, material handling systems, and processes are designed, and critical energy source decisions are made. By including explicit energy cost projections, decisions can be made that will save significant amounts of money per ton of ore over the life of the mine. Attention can also be given to often overlooked details such as lighting. Some of the same tools used in new mine planning are applicable to productivity improvements at an existing plant. These tools are the charting and modeling methods that have been developed by industrial engineers over the past 75 years. Energy Consumption Before any analysis of energy consumption can be performed, preliminary work is necessary to find the kind of energy used, how much it costs the plant, and when electrical peaks occur. Past bills should be examined to determine the monthly consumption rate and the cost of each energy type. These data should be adjusted to remove effects caused by production fluctuations or weather. Knowing when electrical peak demands occur is necessary because these determine either the electrical capacity needed or the amount that must be bought. At $500-$800 per kW for construction or $5-$15 per kW per month for purchase, they represent a significant cost. By the time these data are collected, planners should be aware of the importance of energy in the total cost of mine operation, and should have the most crucial time data for electrical peak demand. Flow Process Chart Reducing costs can be accomplished by a thorough look at mine systems and how altering one system causes changes in others. By developing and exercising models of production processes outward to the transportation of the final product, otherwise obscured weaknesses may become apparent. There are tools available for analyzing the mine and its associated systems; one of the most useful is the flow process chart. The flow process chart gives a system analysis of a production procedure by classifying all actions into one of five types: operations, inspections, transportation, delays without paperwork, and delays with paperwork. Operation: In an operation, the nature of something is changed. Examples are blasting, washing coal, and processing matter. Denoted by 0. Inspection: Examining an object for identification or to measure some attribute. Examples are determining whether a drill hole is deep enough, deciding how far to cut under an unsupported roof when operating a continuous miner, or checking the lubricant level on a truck. Denoted bye. Transportation: Moving an object from one place to another. Examples are transporting overburden, moving coal on a conveyor belt, and pumping water. Denoted by =>. Delay without paperwork: A delay that is an inherent part of the system. Examples include idle time of a continuous miner while waiting for shuttle cars or for roof bolting, crushed ore in a storage area waiting for grinding and flotation, and people from one craft waiting for another craft to finish. Denoted by D. Delay with paperwork: A delay that can be terminated only by some written authorization. Examples are coal that cannot be removed until authorized by a bill of sale and transportation orders, personnel records, maintenance, or spare parts. Denoted by V. In practice, the flow process chart is completed after data collection and a detailed examination of the process. Data collection is needed to answer questions on distance, quantity, and time for each of the operations. As the analysis is being performed, each step of the process is subjected to these questions: • Why is the step necessary? • What is being moved? • When does the step take place, and why?

Placas de Circuito Interno (PCI’s) são partes fundamentais de um computador, uma vez que são responsáveis pelo bom funcionamento deste. Porém, seu descartadas em áreas clandestinas, podem causar danos ao meio ambiente e a saúde pública, pois estas placas podem ter na sua composição elementos tóxicos que as tornam perigosas. O presente estudo visa qualificar e quantificar os metais presentes na fração não magnética das PCI’s, a fim de que subsequentes processos de recuperação de metais possam ser aplicados. Para que as análises pudessem ser feitas, as PCIs foram submetidas a etapas de moagem, quarteamento, separação magnética e digestão em água régia. As placas foram moídas em um moinho de martelos, utilizando grelhas de 2 mm. O resíduo cominuído seguiu para a etapa de separação magnética, obtendo-se duas frações, uma fração magnética e uma fração não magnética. Em seguida, a fração não magnética foi quarteada em amostras de 20 ± 5 g. Para realizar ensaio de digestão em água régia, foi escolhida aleatoriamente uma amostra. A digestão foi realizada durante 24 h a temperatura ambiente usando-se uma proporção sólido: líquido de 20:1. O licor obtido nos ensaio de digestão em água régia foi levado para análise química por espectrometria de emissão óptica por indução de plasma (ICP-OES). Os resultados mostraram que as placas de circuito impresso de computadores contêm na sua fração não magnética aproximadamente 60% dos metais da placa de vídeo.

"Each and every flotation plant must produce daily/weekly/monthly production reports in which metal balances for payable and penalising elements are presented. Several factors including ore heterogeneity and harsh production environment affect the reproducibility of the reported data. Best practices of metal accounting thus prescribe that production reports be accompanied by measurement quality reports quantifying the reproducibility (a data quality metric often expressed as a relative standard deviation) of each data reported. Ignoring the irreproducibility of measurements may lead to the perception that random errors have been totally eliminated through statistical data reconciliation, which is wrong. This paper aims at explaining the full lifecycle management of reproducibility estimation from the outset at the measurement process to its reporting after having been through the statistical data reconciliation process. Indeed, the reproducibility of reported data can be obtained by performing a sensitivity analysis. Necessary conditions for obtaining a truly representative assessment of measurement reproducibility are stated. Typical levels of measurement reproducibility found in operating flotation plants are also reported. These numbers can be used as benchmarks for reproducibility levels that can be realistically expected.IntroductionEach and every flotation plant must produce daily/weekly/monthly production reports in which metal balances for payable and penalising elements are presented. Field tests concerning a fog mesh method for fog removal are discussed. The first tests were performed at the Pyhäsalmi Mine, Finland. As this study gave promising results, further studies were completed at the Orivesi Mine. The results of these most recent field tests are presented and the two studies are compared. The Orivesi test set consisted of four materials. These included air filter fabric, fibrous filter fabric, a plastic greenhouse mesh, and an aluminium mosquito net. The variation of the Orivesi results was more noticeable than what was found previously. The best fog removal effect of all tests was achieved with the aluminium mosquito net, while the plastic green-house mesh performed worst. The humidity reduction by aluminium net was more profound than any of its precedents. More mesh materials will be tested in the near future.

The brief resume of the activities of the Metallurgical Division that appears annually in its progress reports series serves a useful purpose by making available a rather comprehensive but concise recapitulation of the current work, and publications of the division. An unprecedented opportunity to attack the problem of producing ferro-grade material from low-grade domestic manganese ores effectively was provided by the act designated as Public 667 of the 76th Congress of the United States, approved June 26, 1940, which made available an appropriation for "Expediting Production of Equipment and. Supplies for National Defense." Although the funds were not immediately available to the division, good progress has been made in the, solution of the many and diverse problems presented in the studies undertaken to determine the best methods for the recovery of useful products from a wide variety of manganese ores.

Calculations of the temperatures of metal, coke, and gas at any level in the cupola furn~ce can be carried out by means of heat balances, using data obtained from experiments with an 18 in. experimental cupola. The results can, to a certain extent, be verified by means of heat transfer calculations.The curves thus obtained, showing the variation of temperature with height in the cupola, provide a valuable picture of the heat transfer processes in a shaft 'furnace.INTRODUCTIONThe Brown Coal Research Laboratory, of the University of Melbourne, has been engaged in recent years on a programme of iron-melting tests in an experimental cupola furnace.Although the ultimate aim of this work is to develop brown coal char as a cupola fuel, most of the experimental work so far has been with conventional coke. The testing programme was designed to provide information on the effect of variables such as blast rate, metal-coke ratio, and coke size on the overall melting process, e.g. melting rate, temperature of metal tapped, and stack gas composition.However, in many cases data were obtained on conditions inside the furnace by measuring temperatures and gas compositions. The aim of the work described in this paper was to qevelop a method for using this data to obtain information on the processes taking place in the cupola.Very little research has been done on the combustion of fuels in shaft furnaces. Early work on this subject, as well as the initial stages of the Brown Coal Research Laboratory's programme, has been discussed by Evans (1959). The use of probes for obtaining information on conditions in the interior of a shaft furnace was pioneered by Belden (1913)...

Non-transfer-arc linear plasma systems are highly suited to manufacturing nanoparticles. In this paper, the manufacturing of such particles with specially designed plasma systems is discussed. In general, it entails the volatilization of a metal halide that is injected in the high-temperature region of a plasma flame, where it is reacted with a suitable reagent, for example O2, to produce nanooxide powders. Metal powders can also be introduced directly in the plasma. Due to the very short residence time of only milliseconds in the reaction zone, as well as the fact that the reaction takes place in the gas phase, combined with very rapid quenching in the order of 10 000°C.s-1, nanoparticles are produced. At Necsa the manufacturing of such particles has been demonstrated on various scales. A pilot plant for the production of nano-Al2O3, and two pilot plants, one using SiCl4 and the other one using SiF4 as feed material, were built to produce fumed, pyrogenic, nano-SiO2. The alumina plant had a production rate of 8?10 kg.h-1 and the silica plants had production rates of 2 and 10 kg.h-1 respectively. Perfectly spherical alumina particles with a particle size distribution of between 10 and 200 nm were produced on a continuous system. Particle size analysis for the silica by SEM measurements showed a d50 of 60 nm and a particle size distribution of 30?100 nm. The specific surface area was in the range of 170m2.g-1. Other samples of plasma produced nanoparticles such ZnO and B4C will also be presented.

Documented case histories of surface ground movements from mine subsidence were utilized to help determine when the initial collapse of the overburden occurred above longwall panels. By studying this relationship between initial movement at the surface and the amount of face advance, the least-complex conditions exist for empirically assessing the span capacity of the overburden. The objective of this work was to obtain a better understanding of the overburden response to longwall mining. This knowledge will give a better insight on the long-term effects that different overburden types have on the stability and the subsidence potential of room and pillar mines, as well as, the influence of the overburden on subsidence over longwall panels. Theory on the overburden span capacity was developed and correlated to field observations. Data were used on the overburden lithology, depth, width, and face advance of the panel, and the subsidence conditions that were noted on the surface. The subsidence measured on the surface was used to determine when complete failure in the overburden rock had occurred. According to spans predicted by theory and the subsidence measured in the field, the competent lower units failed at a face advance less than when significant subsidence was observed on the surface. In each case studied, there were competent lower beds; however, the full overburden weight was not sustained to the point of subsidence. The best correlation with the surface movement was found with the most shallow, competent bed. Elastic plate solutions with various support conditions were found to best monitor the surface subsidence of these upper roof units.

The newly implemented mineral law framework exacerbated the need to clarify the roles and responsibilities of mine and land surveyors in the preparation and registration of plans and diagrams. The main concern is that survey tasks may be performed by persons who are not considered competent under the different laws. The methodology used was to analyse historic and present legislation on the issue in order to formulate a narrow interpretation of the current requirements. The major findings are tabulated to present a summary of who is responsible for which areas of survey.

"The Buffalo gold deposit is a small deposit consisting of auriferous quartz-tourmaline veins within a granodiorite stock in the Red Lake greenstone belt. This study aims to characterize the mineralizing fluids through fluid inclusion and stable isotope analyses and to compare them with those of the world-class Campbell- Red Lake deposit. Four types of fluid inclusions were recognized, including carbonic, aqueous-carbonic, aqueous, and halite-bearing aqueous, with the carbonic type being the most abundant. Raman analyses indicate that the carbonic phase mainly consists of CO2, with minor amounts of N2 and CH4, and rarely detectable H2S. The homogenization temperatures of the carbonic inclusions range from -41.7° to 30.9°C. The homogenization temperatures and salinities of the aqueous, halite-bearing aqueous, and aqueous-carbonic inclusions are 130° to 276°C and 9.7 to 23.6 wt.% NaCl equiv., 155° to 207°C and 32.9 to 42.3 wt.% NaCl equiv., and 215° to 357°C and 8.3 to 19.7 wt.% NaCl equiv., respectively. The d18OVSMOW values of tourmaline range from 8.2‰ to 9.0‰, and those of quartz from 11.4‰ to 11.9‰, with estimated fluid temperatures from 323° to 399°C based on the quartz-tourmaline isotopic geothermometer. It is postulated that separate CO2-dominated and aqueous fluids intermittently invaded the fracture/vein system in response to fluid pressure fluctuations, with limited mixing. The CO2-dominated fluid, previously recognized in Campbell-Red Lake as the main mineralizing fluid, is inferred to have been derived from deeper parts of the crust. This deep CO2-dominated fluid reservoir might have been a common source for gold mineralization in the Red Lake greenstone belt. L. S. PANYITY.-I made inquiries from the Smith and Dunn people, who are the originators of the compressed air and gas method of increasing the production of oil wells, as to how much pressure the sand will stand; that is, relative to the original rock pressure. They tell me that they have not been able to show, up to date, any pressure in a sand greater than the original pressure. I have also made 'a statement to that effect, but I am really dubious as to whether that is right, as I am not sure that you cannot get a greater pressure. However, I think that a greater pressure would be dangerous because it might cause a loss of gas. C. H. SHAW, ?
