Over the past half-century, researchers have commented on the complexities of ion-exchange processes, but have been forced to use gross assumptions to simplify the associated mathematics sufficiently for mathematical models to be of practical use, given the available computational power. This paper reviews the development of increasingly complex models as computational power has increased over the past half-century, from the direct application of Fick's Law in 1947, through to today's models requiring finiteelement methods. The assumptions required for and the associated limitations of the various models are presented and the associated computational complexities are discussed. A case study is presented in which a continuous loss of capacity in an acid resin was observed over about sixty cycles of loading and elution. Resin poisoning does not explain this observation. This paper presents the capacity loss data, speculates on possible causes of the phenomenon, discusses why conventional kinetic and equilibrium mechanisms cannot explain it and concludes that the need to develop a more rigorous model is apparent. The significance of this observation is that standard tests done for a new resin application could significantly overestimate the commercial performance of the resin concerned, highlighting the importance of computer simulation in this field of process engineering.

Most of the information available on the heat efficiency of hot fluid injection processes, both water and steam, has been obtained from calculated temperature distributions in the pay zone and adjacent formations. The usual approach has been to write the heat balance equations in terms of the temperatures, and then to introduce whatever simplifications are necessary to help obtain an analytical or a numerical solution. In either case, the assumption has often been made that the vertical thermal conductivity in the flooded interval is infinite, so that the temperatures within the flooded interval are then independent of vertical position. Because it was first made by Lauwerier,l and has been used extensively since, this assumption will be referred to as the Lauwerier assumption. Excellent reviews of the literature on the heat efficiency of hot fluid injection processes have been given by Spillette,2 Flock et al.,3 and Ramney.4 Of course, the most significant contributions take into account the effect of a finite vertical thermal conductivity on the vertical temperature profile. The most general analytic expression for the heat efficiency of a hot fluid injection process is that of Antimirov5 who considers injection of a heated incompressible fluid into a reservoir through an arbitrary number of wells. The rate of heat injection into the reservoir, as well as the injection temperature, is an arbitrary function of time. The geometry of the horizontal flow is arbitrary, although the reservoir is considered to be of uniform thickness and properties and to be of infinite areal extent. Heat transfer within the reservoir is by horizontal convection and conduc- tion, and by vertical conduction. In the formations adjacent to the flooded interval, heat transfer is by conduction in any direction. Thus, the available expression for the heat efficiency due to hot water injection has been developed for rather general conditions. This degree of applicability has not been obtained for other thermal recovery processes. By making the Lauwerier assumption we have been able to obtain expressions for the heat efficiency that are essentially independent of the thermal recovery process, be it steam, hot-water, or underground combustion. Clearly, then, the approach followed here is more restrictive than that of Antimirov5 in that it uses the Lauwerier assumption. At the same time less restrictive assumptions are made about the horizontal heat transfer mechanisms, either in the flooded interval or in the formations adjacent to it. The main difference between our approach and that of other investigators is that the heat balance in the pay zone is expressed for the pay zone as a whole rather than for a volume element within it. The Lauwerier assumption is introduced after the problem is developed along these lines as far as possible. The details of the development of the heat efficiency are given in the Appendix, while the main features of the model are discussed in the next section. We introduced a numerical method that is applicable for the analysis of static and dynamic deformations of elastic media. In this numerical study, each elastic body is modeled with a system of several hundred rigid particles that are joined together elastically. Maximum shear stress fields due to external loading are obtained and compared with those obtained by photoelastic experiment. Preliminary results are presented for the stresses generated in circular disk shaped bodies idealized with connected systems of particles. Extension of this simulation method to fragmentation of brittle materials is also illustrated in an example.

I need not say that I knew of it in far-off countries or from the knowledge of others, but I knew it in my own breast and as my very own and can therefore surely esteem it as hotter than all the other fires that the world calls by that name. "Since about 2002 there has been significant capital cost escalation, not inflation, in the mining industry causing turmoil for successful project completion. Project capital costs have more than doubled and some cases tripled in this time period. This has rendered many projects to be economically challenged and in some cases not viable. In addition higher than expected operating costs have further adversely affected project metrics such as NPV and IRR. Capital cost increases for projects have been widely reported globally. This current paper reviews three items. Firstly, why such capital increases and the various components that make up capital estimates. Secondly, it looks at reasons why preliminary estimates, for example at scoping and pre-feasibility level, have been lower than the ultimate constructed costs. Such increases and differences in estimates have caused major problems for mine builders and have led to a general nervousness on the part of those providing project finance. Thirdly, what discipline is needed in project execution in an attempt to mitigate such capital increases. The paper will hopefully give a better understanding of the various issues and factors involved for those in the mining industry.INTRODUCTION The years 2012 and 2013 were a turbulent time for the mining industry. The European economic crisis, politics, metal price volatility and a wave of changes of CEO´s in some of the major mining companies all contributed to a challenging couple of years. Two issues stood out. First, the huge increases reported in the capital costs of projects, where increases of 100% - 300% were not uncommon and in some cases exceeded that during the first decade of the 21st century. Second, company write downs related to takeovers during the boom and the stabilization/correction in commodity prices. These have led to great uncertainty, made it difficult (or impossible) to raise project financing costs, contributed to the changes at CEO level and placed many projects either on hold or cancelled altogether. It is commonplace now to read of companies talking of reduced capital expenditure and making a complete review of their projects and operations to contain costs."

"The molybdenite associated with copper porphyry ores is generally treated in a flotation circuit consisting of a separation and a cleaning section. In the last few years column flotation cells have replaced the numerous counter-current stages that were previously used in the cleaning section. Despite this, little has been published regarding the number of column cleaning stages required. Therefore a Moly flotation database is assembled with the objective of verifying the existence of a common upgrading profile. This can then be used as a guide in the prediction of the number of stages required to achieve a given concentrate grade.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the first use of Column Flotation was on copper flotation products, the popularity and understanding of their operation was not really achieved until they were widely implemented in Moly circuits in early 1983. The use of columns in Moly plants has since left a legacy of information, both published and unpublished. The data collected since that time has been used primarily used to establish column operating parameters and to determine upgrading potential within the circuit.Byproduct Moly generally occurs with porphyritic copper ores in concentrations less than 0.1% MoS2. As such, piloting a new moly ore to produce, say 5 Kg/Hr MoS2, in a slurry approximately 1 Lt/min (at 10% solids), requires a moly plant feed of about 570 Kg/Hr, which translates to a mill feed rate of 200 to 800 Tonnes per day (depending whether you deal with Chilean or Canadian ores). Piloting Moly for any lower tonnage would reduce the accuracy of the testwork.Thus a need exists to collect operating data in order to establish the existence of process relationships that could be used for feasibility and design purposes.The object of this paper is to expose a preliminary relationship that could be used for the purposes described above and to apply the findings to a preliminary design of a moly cleaning circuit flowsheet."

Estudou-se o efeito do tamanho de grão austenítico nas propriedades de tração do aço Hadfield refinado com Hf. Estas propriedades foram comparadas com as de um aço Hadfield sem refino, ambos com a composição química de acordo com a norma ASTM A128 – grau B2. Adicionalmente, foram usadas técnicas de caracterização macroestrutural, microestrutural e fractográfica. A caracterização macroestrutural mostrou que o aço Hadfield com adição de Hf apresentou tamanho do grão austenítico (600 ?m) aproximadamente cinco vezes menor do que o do aço Hadfield sem refino (3000 ?m). Os resultados do ensaio de tração mostraram um pequeno aumento (~6%) no valor do limite de escoamento com o refino do grão, em acordo com a Equação de Hall-Petch para materiais austeníticos. No entanto, os resultados dos ensaios de tração do aço Hadfield refinado mostraram aumentos que não foram previstos para as propriedades de resistência à tração (~37%), alongamento (~53%) e tenacidade (~88%). O exame fractográfico dos corpos de prova de tração indicou predominância do mecanismo de fratura dúctil para o aço Hadfield sem refino, enquanto que o aço Hadfield refinado apresentou predominância do mecanismo de fratura intergranular dúctil.

Editor’s note: This is the second part of a two-part series on longwall mining in the United States. Part one was published in the December 2005 issue of ME (pp. 21-26). It provided a history of longwall coal mining in the United States. It also discussed the technology involved in the productivity gains and operational improvements. Boyd anticipates that U.S. coal production will increase by 61 Mt (67 million st) (6 percent) from 2004 to 2010. A combination of higher surface and underground mine production will be required to meet the projected market demand. Boyd’s projections of coal production by major mining methods are shown in Table 1.

This report presents the results of a study of mill tailings disposal practices and potential tailings dam stability problems. Recognizing the long period of time that would be required to develop the technology and practices necessary to significantly improve refuse disposal safety, the Bureau initiated this research effort as a first step in that development. Volume 1 includes a summary of conclusions and recommendations resulting from the overall research effort; discussions of disposal systems and methods, geology, seismicity, hydrology, and materials characteristics; evaluations of investigational techniques; discussions of usable interim generalized investigational, analytical and inspection procedures; discussion of general principles and presentation of a tailings technology manual outline; and discussion of needed future research am recommended programs.

This bulletin, which discusses open-cut mining at the metal mines of the United States, is the last of a series of such papers by the Bureau of Mines describing the principal methods of mining.4 Open-cut mining is applicable to flat-lying mineral deposits relatively near the surface. Vein deposits seldom are amenable to this method, although outcrops of veins sometimes are worked as open pits. Most of the iron ore of the country is mined from open pits; according to the Minerals Yearbook, 67.4 percent was mined from open pits and 32.6 percent from underground mines in 1937. Open-cut mining is relatively new in the copper industry but yields more copper than any other method; in 1937 about 52 percent of the copper ore mined in the United States was taken from open pits. Lead-zinc ore has been produced from open pits in the Joplin (Mo.) district, but most of the deposits in this area, although flat-lying, are too deep to be mined economically by the open-cut method. In 1937 one company at Oronogo, Mo., was stripping overburden and mining mixed oxidized and sulfide ores by this method.

The objective of this program is to identify and evaluate superior, lightweight substitutes for selected coal mine roof support concepts such as crossbars, posts, and crib blocks. Engineering analysis and concept design identified, through tradeoff studies, that some materials are promising, from a technical standpoint, as support substitutes: E-glass reinforced polyester resin, high strength low alloy steel, aluminum, and very high early strength (VHE) cement. An economic analysis indicates that none of the lightweight substitutes are economically competitive with wood on an initial cost basis; however, in terms of life cycle costs based on current dollars, the high strength low alloy steel appears competitive for crossbars, and the VHE cement and E-glass/resin appear competitive for posts.

The Bureau of Mines studied the properties of copper that had been oxide dispersion-strengthened with 2 vol pct of either yttria or alumina. Compounds of copper and aluminum or yttrium, coprecipitated from aqueous solution, were converted to oxides; the copper was reduced, compacted, sintered, and extruded. For the resulting copper-dispersoid composites, room temperature tensile properties after annealing in hydrogen, elevated temperature tensile and stress-rupture properties, and electrical conductivity were determined. Compared with oxygen-free copper, copper-2 vol pct alumina or yttria had improved strength after annealing between 400° and 1,000° C, and improved elevated temperature strength, with little loss in electrical conductivity.

FEBRUARY 26TH. MORNING SESSION: The sixteenth regular meeting of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute was called to order in one of the private dining rooms of the Albany Hotel, Monday morning, at 11 o'clock, with the President, F. W. Whiteside, in the chair, one hundred and one members being registered. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. The Treasurer reported the finances of the Institute in excellent shape. The President appointed J. B. Marks, J. S. Veach and W. A. Ream as a Resolution Committee, and Frank A. Young, M. B. Urquhart and G. A. Murphy a Nominating Committee. There being no further business the meeting adjourned. AFTERNOON SESSION: The afternoon session was called to order in the Ball Room of the Albany Hotel, with approximately one hundred members present, President Whiteside presiding. A. L. Jones read his paper entitled, "The Power Problem of the Coal Mine," and C. E. Drennan, his paper, "Why Alternating Current." These papers were thoroughly discussed, after which the meeting adjourned. EVENING SESSION: At 6:45 p. m. two hundred and fifty-three members and invited guests met in the Ball Room of the Albany Hotel for the banquet. Harry F. Nash was toastmaster, and George Sanford Holmes the principal speaker. Following Mr. Holmes speech, H. N. Wheeler delivered his humorous oration of the "Annexation of Cuba;" following this certain members of the Institute gave an entertainment depicting a fictitious meeting of the United States Coal Commission. Chester Mott, formerly a member of the Institute wrote the words and songs of the entertainment, and directed it. After the show the assembly enjoyed a dance.

This paper focuses on remediation of a 3.6 km long water conveyance tunnel that suffered two large falls of ground (FoGs), one of which subsequently progressed to the ground surface, resulting in full collapse of the tunnel. The tunnel is part of a network of water conveyance tunnels and open channels that direct water into two turbines located in an underground powerhouse, originally constructed in the 1970s. At the time of construction, the tunnel was partially supported with shotcrete or rock bolts, with no further ground support added since construction. Two sonar surveys in 019 and 01 identied two adacent large FoGs in the tunnel, approimately 1.2 km from the tunnel outlet. Historical geological and geotechnical information indicated that the FoGs occurred within a 60 m wide fault zone. Remediation plans were developed, which included stabilization of the outlet channel, the portal, the tunnel leading up to the FoG areas (1.2 km length) and the FoG areas. Several remediation options were considered to restore the tunnel, including construction of a diversion tunnel to bypass the FoGs or remediation of the FoG areas with steel ribs and backlling the void above the FoGs to surface.

Chromate conversion coating is a process for making a complex layer at the surface of zinc galvanized steel which makes the metal more resistant to corrosion, especially at marine atmosphere, and increases the adhesiveness of color. In this work the influences of various compositions on commercial zinc galvanized steel sheet to the color of chromate conversion coating has been investigated at normal temperature and the factors that affect the control and optimization of the process have been determined. A bath composition of 20 g/liter Cr203 and 10 g/liter NaOH and a dipping time of 50 seconds at room temperature (25-30°C) make a desirable color of chromate coating. A slow agitation at a constant pH of I (with additions of NaOH or H2SO4) assures a constant bath condition and develops the color. This kind of coating has more corrosion resistance and this bath condition and composition are also more economical.

Abundance data are presented for a comprehensive range of elements in oil shale samples from deposits located in Queensland. The techniques of instrumental neutron activation analysis and spark source mass spectrometry were used to obtain concentration data for up to 50 trace elements in each shale. These techniques were supplemented by other spectrometric methods to obtain data for major, minor and some trace elements. Sixty-four elements were determined quantitatively. This comprehensive characterisation of oil shale samples from the major deposits in Australia provides inorganic abundance data not previously available. It also provides important background information for processing studies and the associated environmental aspects of shale oil production and waste disposal.

This paper briefly describes the principal commercial and near-commercial deposits of gold-bearing gravel and the important placer-mining operations in Lemhi County, Idaho. It is on of a series on western mining districts being published by the Bureau of Mines. This paper is based on a field survey of the placer-mining districts of Lemhi County in the summer of 1938. Available information concerning gold-bearing gravels was obtained from prospectors and claim owners; operators supplied the data on mining operations. No attempt was made actually to test the gravels. The principal object of the examination was to indicate placer areas worthy of further investigation by prospective operators.
