"The adoption of tailored-rolled or tailor-welded blanks (i.e. TRB/TWB) in the automotive industry has been known to offer great potential for the optimization of weight, function, cost and complexity. Vehicle light weighting can further be achieved by using high strength aluminum alloys like the 7xxx-series. 7xxx-series alloys are capable of delivering specific strengths equal to or greater than high strength steels. However, room temperature formability of this aluminum class is limited, so one approach to forming 7xxx-series alloys is by hot stamping. Hot stamping utilizes an elevated temperature blank and the high pressure stamping contact of the forming die to simultaneously quench and form the sheet. This paper explores the initial feasibility of tailored thickness material for body-in-white applications when processed under hot stamping conditions.INTRODUCTION Steel tailor-rolled blanks (TRB) or tailor-welded blanks (TWB) have been used within the automotive industry as a method of reducing weight, expanding material utilization, and decreasing overall part/assembly cost (Ganeasan et al., 2015; Merklein et al., 2014; Hirt et al., 2005; Kridli et al., 2000). The production of such tailored thickness materials has resulted in over $2.5 billion (2016) in combined industry sales (Mubea, 2018). As automakers begin to adopt the manufacturing practices traditionally reserved for steel such as tailor rolling/welding with greater enthusiasm for vehicle light weighting, there exist an opportunity to expand the material database to extend beyond the traditional aluminum alloys found in current production. High strength aluminum alloys, i.e. 7xxx-series, are ideal for structural automotive applications due to their high specific strength; however, they have limited room temperature formability. Hot stamping, another manufacturing practice used by the steel industry, can be used to form these high strength materials. The combination of tailoring the thickness of a sheet material and hot stamping provides an opportunity for significant weight saving within an existing manufacturing footprint. This paper explores the potential and challenges of this approach when applied to structural body-in-white components. The methods for tailor rolling, tailor welding and hot stamping are described and applied to the production of a 7075 aluminum alloy B-pillar. The results are discussed in terms of feasibility and weight savings."

Dealing with changing or hidden conditions is one of the most difficult challenges facing any contractor or engineer on a project. Relying on incomplete or inaccurate engineering reports is another common problem. Other challenges include dealing with technical errors or oversights that are deeply embedded in the project specifications or bid process.No matter what is the origin of the problem or how it manifests, deep foundation contractors, design professionals and engineers should be ever-mindful of good risk management practices that can prevent serious disputes that can result in costly litigation."

Following a study by NIOSH on the availability of teams in the U.S. as well as existing training sites and their capabilities, the Penn State University, leaders of the Pittsburgh Section of SME, providers of mine rescue equipment, and industry sponsors united to establish and make fully functional a student mine rescue team at Penn State University. With the growth of MERD and mine rescue competitive events at Missouri S&T, the Mine Training and Technology Center in PA, and at Colorado School of Mines Edgar Mine, a critical mass of effective training venues were made available to help student teams progress and develop mine rescue skills. The challenges to be met in creating and developing a student mine rescue team will be discussed. The rewards from this type of effort will be the quick capability of graduates from mining engineering programs to be involved in not only mining operations, but industry mine rescue teams and other leadership roles as well.

Componentes tubulares de parede fina têm aplicações em diversas áreas industriais, na forma de trocadores de calor, amortecedores de impacto, sistemas de fixação, absorvedores de energia, pré-formas para outros processos de conformação mecânica, etc. Neste trabalho é apresentado um estudo de natureza teórico-experimental envolvendo o processo de expansão de extremidades de tubos. Busca-se determinar os parâmetros que governam o mesmo, suas limitações e se a conformação em matriz pode ser uma alternativa viável a processos mais complexos, como por exemplo, hidroconformação. É feita a caracterização do material (uma liga de alumínio ABNT 6061) através do levantamento de curvas de escoamento, perfis de microdureza Vickers, e deformabilidade quanto ao surgimento de trincas e de instabilidade plástica (flamblagem). Ao final são conduzidas simulações através de elementos finitos e experimentos do processo de expansão. São variadas características geométricas dos tubos e das ferramentas e o estado do material (diferentes tratamentos térmicos).

Lithium minerals occur predominantly in pegmatites that contain mineral assemblages derived from the crystallization of post- magmatic fluids or from the metasomatic action of residual peg- matitic fluids. They have been the traditional sources of raw material for ceramic and chemical industries. With the discovery of the Searles Lake deposits, brines became new sources of lithium, and, today, two brine deposits satisfy nearly one-half of the free world demand for lithium chemicals. Indeed, lithium production from pegmatites has been superseded by brines sources. In the United States, the brines of Clayton Valley, NV, have been exploited since 1964 by Cyprus Foote Mineral Company, a subsidiary of Cyprus Minerals Company. In Chile, Sociedad Chilena de Litio Ltda., an affiliate of Cyprus Minerals Company, is now producing lithium carbonate from the brines of the Salar de Atacama. Recently identified brine deposits suggest that these may well become the prime sources of lithium chemicals. In Bolivia, the government is negotiating the rights to exploit the brines of the Salar de Uyuni. The Salar del Hombre Muerto in Argentina is being evaluated as a future center of chemical production. The brines of the Great Salt Lake of Utah, the Smackover Formation, and the Imperial Valley geothermal field have been defined as important resources of lithium. In Tibet, high concentrations of lithium have been reported in several saline lakes. In the People's Republic of China, lithium may be produced from the brines of the Dabusan playa in the Qinghai Basin. The 1950s saw a great number of lithium companies develop. However, following the termination of the Atomic Energy Commission purchase program in 1959, several companies, such as Maywood Chemical Co., American Lithium Chemicals, and Quebec Lithium Corp., were forced to close their operations. Nevertheless, with the development of new applications in glass ceramics, air conditioning systems, synthetic rubber, and metallurgy (aluminumpotlines), the lithium industry grew steadily. With the potential application of lithium metal in batteries, nuclear reactors, and fuel cells, a steady growth can be foreseen. New products and new applications are likely to stimulate exploration for expanded reserves as well as the search for new sources from which lithium could be extracted economically. Presently identified reserves and production capacity are sufficient to satisfy the conventional market growth of lithium.

The furnace was commissioned in 1973 and produces a high-grade sulphide matte containing nickel, copper and cobalt, which is shipped to refineries in Zimbabwe and Norway for further processing. This paper outlines the recent process improvements and plant expansions that have resulted in a capacity increase from 40 000 to 60 000 tons per annum of metal production.

It is explained why an exponent of 2.5, obtained when using a square root of nominal size d to adapt the value of a calculated liberation factor to a different comminution size, will rarely be encountered in practice, if no arbitrary decisions are made.

(Glen Summit Meeting, June, 1911.) THE following notes, prepared in 1908, as the result of a personal examination and extensive explorations under my direction in 1906, have been revised and greatly augmented after two subsequent visits and further explorations in 191.0. The hard iron-ores of the south coast of Oriente Province, in the island of Cuba, have been known for many years, in fact one mine has been in operation for more than 20 years ; but it is only within the past four years that the large mantle-deposits of brown ores of the north coast have attracted serious attention. A. C. Spencer 1 has described these ores in a paper, entitled Three Deposits of Iron Ore in Cuba, which refers to the Mayari, Moa, and Cubitas deposits. C. M. Weld,2 in a scholarly paper on The Residual Brown Iron-Ores of Cuba, has discussed the character and possible genesis of these deposits with particular reference to the Moa field, calling attention also to the Taco and Navas fields in addition to those described by Spencer. Descriptive articles with reference to the Mayari field, and a few words about the Moa deposit, have also appeared.3 It is the purpose of the present paper to give some account of the exploration of the Moa deposit and to call attention to its commercial importance. LOCATION. The Moa district is situated on the north coast of the . Province of Oriente, which is the most easterly province of the island of Cuba. This is the second of two papers dealing with the construction and use of aerial tramways in the metal-mining industry. The first paper3/described aerial tramways in a general way and discussed the engineering principles used in tramway design. The purpose of this paper is to give a more detailed description of equipment and material rind to discuss construction and operating costs. The papers contained herein summarize results of various recent Bureau of Mines investigations in the area of mine power distribution systems. They are based on information from Bureau personnel, contractors and grantees, and Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration. Conclusions drawn from a series of parameter measurements on mine power systems, taken over a 3-year span, are presented. Personnel and equipment hazards due to faults on isolated, solidly grounded, and resistance grounded three-phase systems are discussed. Two papers cover dc applications of circuit breakers, including a novel protection scheme for trolley lines. The methods of suppressing induced arcing currents and voltages in a-c machines are evaluated. An evaluation program for ground monitors is described. Acceptance test procedures and the importance of various paparameters for trailing cable splice are covered. A number of techniques for locating faults in trailing cables are described.

I have been requested to present a paper on the slag from the basic Bessemer process, as prepared for fertilizing. Since Professor W. B. Phillips presented at the Birmingham meeting, in May, 1888, an able paper* on this subject, as it had been developed up to that time, there is little for me to add. Perhaps later practice may be best expressed by the homely proverb, " The proof of the pudding is in the eating." As the Pottstown Iron Company is the only concern manufacturing basic Bessemer slag in this country, the writer's personal experience in the use of it may be interesting. Our slag averages: P2O5, 21.37; SiO2,, 5.10; MgO, 5.90; Al2O3, 4.01; MnO, 5.56 ; FeO, 12.00; Na2O and K2O, 0.80; CaO, 45.26; total, 100.00. This gives over 76 per cent. of phosphoric acid and lime. In using this material for several years past on my lawn and garden, I have found it better than anything else I have ever tried ; and I am sure that any of you who had seen my green grass last month (January), wherever the ground was bare from snow, as bright as in early fall, would be forced to acknowledge the advantages of this soil-enricher. The grass on my private lawn, and around the company's office, is green the whole winter; and we have raised very good sod, by the use of this phosphate, where, without it, we were unable to get the grass to grow either from seed or by repeatedly sodding. The same statement applies to garden-truck; when the soil was first broken up, a good crop of vegetables was easily raised. My own gardener has had several premiums from Philadelphia seedsmen (notably, last year, the first premium for sugarcorn raised in the first part of July, being the first sample sent them). Our method of applying this material is to grind the slag very finely, so that at least 60 per cent. of it will go through a 150-mesh screen (i.e., say, 22,500 meshes to the square inch), and 90 per cent. through a 100-mesh screen (i.e., 10,000 meshes to the square inch). This fine grinding seems to be the main condition of success.

"The functional role of inclusions at low cutting speeds is to promote ductile fracture in chip formation process, whereas the role of inclusions at high cutting speeds is to prevent tool crater wear by suppressing the tribological phenomenon of seizure at the tool-chip interface. Glassy oxide inclusions are engineered into the workpiece to form a viscous layer in-situ at the tool-chip interface at high cutting speeds. The viscous layer lubricates the tool-chip interface to prevent the seizure. In comparison with the large volume fraction of inclusions needed for promoting ductile fracture at low cutting speeds, the amount of inclusions required for lubricating the toolchip interface at high cutting speeds is very small and is in the range that is typical of clean steels. The chip fracture process at high cutting speeds is aided by strain rate hardening of the matrix, which facilitates chip disposal of relatively clean steel.Inclusion engineering for high speed machining involves the control of the rheology and composition of inclusions to meet target viscosity at the tool-chip interface. The application of thermodynamic models in controlled production of inclusions in steels designed for high speed machining is discussed."

Introduction The Horne mine, the property of Noranda Mines, Limited, has in the last six years become one of Canada's leading gold and copper producers. Since the smelter was blown-in during December, 1927, up to the end of 1933, it has produced approximately 1,200,000 oz. of gold and 35O,OOO,OOO lb. of copper. The property is situated within an area occupied entirely by pre-Cambrian rocks and characterized by the complexity of rock types and structures common in such terrain. But apart from this the mine also presents other features of unusual interest in the size, number, and variety of the ore-bodies, the mineralogical associations, and the rather exceptional values both in gold and copper. It is not surprising, therefore, that a study of the geology of the mine should bring to light many interesting problems. The present paper summarizes, as concisely as possible, the results of such a study. Actually, it is a much abridged version of a more comprehensive and detailed paper completed by the writer a year ago (1), but embodying certain corrections and additional data made possible as a result of further development at the mine and of field work carried out during the summer of 1933. Owing to limitations of space, the paper is, in the main, a presentation of conclusions arrived at in the course of the study. Much of the supporting evidence cited in the thesis referred to has, of necessity, been omitted here.

The present work is part of an ongoing Bureau of Mines effort to provide a better understanding of the fundamental phenomena involved in sulfide flotation, the role of oxygen in xanthate adsorption being one essential issue. Galena was chosen as the material around which to develop a conceptual model, partly because of its demonstrated oxygen sensitivity and partly because information on its properties and flotation behavior constitutes the largest part of the fundamental information available on sulfides of commercial importance. The model is formulated primarily in terms of surface electronic energy levels produced by oxygen and xanthate and is further developed using existing experimental evidence and its implications. Four major functions of oxygen are elucidated, and the relationship of these to the formation of lead xanthate, dixanthogen, and a surface compound is discussed. Though yet incomplete, the model provides a useful framework within which the results of diverse experiments can be related to one another in their proper perspective, as shown by a brief discussion and resolution of some apparently discordant results reported in the literature.

THE production of titanium in 15-1b. lots and with a purity sufficient to be consolidated into ductile metal, as described in a previous paper,1 has provided adequate material for a study of the : physical properties of titanium and a more thorough examination of its working qualities. Data on the physical properties reported in that paper were obtained on metal fabricated by a fixed procedure, standardized for the purpose of control of the reduction, and are representative only of material fabricated under those conditions. There are many possible variables in the working schedule, which will have significant effects on the properties of the finished material; and since the previous working methods were not necessarily the best, an investigation of the fabrication of titanium by other methods was undertaken. In this work the consolidation of the powder by pressing and sintering was conducted essentially as outlined in the report cited' and all efforts were centered on fabrication methods for those powders and the properties produced by them. Hardness, density, microstructure, and tensile properties were determined at various stages in the working and annealing; and resistivity measurements were made on a few bars and drawn wire. [ ] CONSOLIDATION OF THE POWDER The screen analysis of the available titanium powder is given in Table I. No attempt was made to alter the size distribution from that noted because this powder, although coarse by normal powder-metallurgy standards, produced acceptable compacts suitable for the present work. Because of their large specific surface, finer powders are more contaminated by oxygen and produce harder compacts, which are difficult to work. The powder as produced is soft, compresses in a normal fashion, and exhibits very little tendency to adhere to the die surfaces. This contract final report summarizes the design, fabrication and testing of a "line brattice air curtain" device under Bureau of Mines Contract H0357097. The purpose of this program was to develop the concept of using an air curtain for coursing ventilating air parallel with the air curtain From the last open crosscut to the face in exhausting ventilation systems to replace the line brattice cloth in room and pillar coal mining operations. The final design of the air curtain device consists of a 10-foot long closed end pipe with c: slot cut along its length. Pressurized air is delivered to the open end with a hydraulically-driven blower. A sheet of air emanates from the slot and is directed toward the mine roof. An invisible sheet of air is thus created between the top of the machine and mine roof and acts a an extension of the existing conventional line brattice.

The paper presents an approach to design a multi level room and pillar layout in a 40m thick seam overlain by a major aquifer. The design was required to maximise extraction with due consideration of the general stability of the workings, the potential water hazards, and spontaneous combustion risks due to air leakage between horizons. The approach utilised was a combination of empirical pillar sizing for water hazard control with numerical modelling to assess potential interactions between horizons. The numerical modelling allowed the size of interleaves, and the appropriate staggers to be optimised in terms of stress distribution. The stress distribution allows both the general stability of the openings and more importantly the permeability changes around the openings to be determined. The permeability of coal is sensitive to stress, and an empirical stress to permeability relationship, and theoretical permeability to flow leakage relationship has been applied to interpreting the relative spontaneous combustion risk associated with each of the proposed layouts. The final proposed design is a compromise between maximum exploitation of reserves and consideration of water hazards and of spontaneous combustion risk. Further more detailed design will be required as more comprehensive data on the geotechnical properties of the coal and overburden become available.

Foreword Following the explosion in the Hillcrest mine, which occurred in the evening of Sunday, September 19th, 1926, and in which two men lost their lives, the writer was invited by the Hon. J.E. Brownlee, Premier of Alberta, to conduct an investigation into the causes of the disaster, and to make such recommendations as seemed advisable with a view to minimizing as far as possible the chance of future explosions in this and similar Alberta coal mines. Accordingly, the mine was visited, and extensive investigations were made underground on October 21st, 2.2.nd, and 25th, in company with Mr. John T. Stirling, Chief Inspector of Mines for Alberta, Mr. Moses Johnson, District Inspector for the Crowsnest Pass District, Mr. J as. A. Richards, Inspector of Mines, Edmonton, and also Mr. Thomas Davies, manager, and other officials of the Hillcrest mine. Hearings of the coroner's inquest were also attended on October 20th and 23rd, when testimony regarding the explosion was given by various witnesses. The following paper summarizes my general observations in tracing the place of origin of the explosion, and my efforts to determine the cause of ignition. Certain recommendations arc also made, and the writer invites discussion on these and the other matters dealt with in the paper.
