This paper covers the operation and maintenance of Diesel locomotives underground on a portion of the Delaware River Aqueduct. † This part of the tunnel is 15 miles long, with shafts 14 ft. in diameter spaced about 5 miles apart. These shafts (2, 2a and 3) are 825 ft., 1551 and 840 ft. deep, respectively. The grade of the tunnel is almost level, except for the 12,100 ft. north of shaft 2, which has a grade of 2.31 per cent. The tunnel is circular, 17 to 19 ft. in diameter. It lies at a depth of 400 ft. below sea level, with a maximum overburden of 2400 feet. The tunnel driving was carried on in six headings, using 15 storage-battery locomotives, each of 13 gross tons and having a maximum speed of 8 miles per hour. The longest haul was 3 miles, which proved to be the maximum distance for which storage-battery locomotives could be employed economically for the amount of material to be moved. One locomotive was used for switching cars at each heading, one for switching cars at the bottom of each shaft and one on the main-line haul from the heading to the shaft. The maximum amount of material hoisted in one shaft from two headings when 104 ft. of tunnel was driven in 24 hr. was 1000 cu. yd., or about 2000 tons of rock in place. The total quantity excavated was 750,000 cu. yd. (1,500,000 tons of rock). The tunnel-lining operations using concrete presented a problem of hading a maximum distance of 5 miles in the tunnel. The concrete-placing equipment had a capacity of about 2000 CU. yd., or 4000 tons in 24 hours. Experience had shown that storage-battery equipment could not handle this quantity of material within the time required at the distance of 5 miles. Trolley-locomotive haulage was considered dangerous and expensive, and would cause interference because transmission equipment would be required. Therefore the performance of Diesel locomotives of 160 hp., with a speed of 18 miles per hour, in comparison with that of other types of locomotives, was studied. Choice of Locomotives In deciding upon the type of locomotive to be used for the 5-mile haul, four alternatives were considered, as follows: I. To purchase additional storage-battery locomotives with the necessary batteries over the 6 locomotives and 12 batteries available. 2. To convert the existing battery locomotives to the trolley type. 3. To purchase new trolley locomotives. 4. To purchase Diesel locomotives. Kumba Iron Ore?s Zandrivierspoort (ZRP) magnetite-haematite project aims to mine and beneficiate a magnetite resource with low contaminant levels to produce from 1 Mt/a to 2.5 Mt/a product, which will be either a concentrate, micro-pellets for direct reduction, or blast furnace pellets. Anglo American Technical Solutions Research conducted a number of piloting campaigns to validate the process design flow sheet, demonstrate process performance, and to generate data for use as a design basis. Secondary to this, the pilot plant was to produce approximately 7 t of magnetite-haematite concentrate with low enough SiO2 to be used as feedstock for pelletizing studies. The pilot plant achieved 34.2% mass yield, at 69.0% Fe, 2.2% SiO2, from an IsaMill grind of 80% -45 µm. This product quality will compare favourably to other leading direct reduction (DR) pelletizing concentrates. However, two-stage comminution to 80% -75 µm and beneficiation of ZRP ore will produce a blast furnace (BF) quality pelletizing concentrate, indicative quality being 67.6% Fe and 4% SiO2, at higher mass yields. An economic evaluation between producing a DR and a BF pelletizing concentrate will have to be conducted prior to finalizing the concentrate production flow sheet..

"Utilization of micropiles for structural retrofit requires connection of the micropiles to the footings of the existing structure. Almost ten years ago, an experimental research effort was carried out in the US to investigate the magnitude and mechanism of development of the bond strength between micropiles and existing concrete. The study resulted in important conclusions on the mechanism of connection capacity development and provided specific recommendations for practical design of micropile-to-footing connections. In the last five years, the original study was complemented by an intensive experimental effort in Portugal aimed at answering many of the questions still remaining on this topic. This paper is a summary of the knowledge that is presently available on the capacity of micropile-to-existing footing connections. It presents the results and observations of model tests performed in the US and Portugal, as well as some tests from actual construction sites. The paper presents clear evidence that friction may be the most important component of connection capacity. It also presents a clear correlation between confinement and connection capacity.IntroductionUtilization of micropiles for structural retrofit requires connection of the micropiles to the footings of the existing structure. This is often accomplished by drilling through the footing and developing the connection by direct bond between the micropile grout and the existing concrete. Smooth and textured micropile inserts of varying lengths were tested to failure inside pre-drilled holes of varying diameters. That investigation led to several publications (Gomez et al. 2005, Wilder et al. 2005, Cadden 2009) on the mechanism of development of bond strength between micropiles and concrete, which included a chart for preliminary bond value selection depending on the diameter of the hole and texture of the micropile.An intensive testing program was carried out in Portugal in the last five years. The program focused on answering questions posed by the original investigation and on finding the relationship between connection capacity and level of confinement. Both investigations, and especially the testing performed in Portugal, provided an invaluable amount of information on the mechanisms of failure of micropile-to-footing connections. This information should be the basis for development of design procedures that, until now, were not available."

This paper covers, besides laboratory work, a study of actual operation at the Washoe Smelter over a considerable period of time, together with the results of a visit to the Midvale plant of the United States Smelting & Refining Co., near Salt Lake. For the latter privilege, as well as permission to publish the resulting data herein given, I am indebted to George W. Heintz, General Manager of the Midvale plant, and here take pleasure in expressing my appreciation for the many courtesies extended to me by Mr. Heintz and members of the technical staff at the smelter. Almost all of the world's supply of arsenic is recovered as a byproduct in the smelting of other metals. It is seen 'on the market in various forms, the most common being arsenic trioxide, the " white arsenic " of commerce, which is sold as a heavy white powder, or in white, glassy, translucent masses. It is present in small amounts in many ores. In the roasting and smelting furnaces many of its compounds break down, liberating arsenic trioxide, which is volatilized and carried by the gases into the flue system, where a part is condensed and settles with the flue dust.

O fluxante para aços baixo carbono, aplicado no lingotamento contínuo de placas, apresenta como características a temperatura de fusão entre 1.030°C e 1.070°C e a tendência a cristalização suprimida. Desta forma, o filme de escória apresenta predominantemente a fase vítrea que facilita a transferência de calor na interface molde de cobre e pele de aço em solidificação. Há uma tendência em retirar ou reduzir o teor de flúor nos fluxantes, com o objetivo de minimizar a erosão da câmara de exaustão do lingotamento contínuo, além de ser um risco potencial para a saúde e segurança e do aumento da taxa de erosão da válvula submersa. Este trabalho apresenta os resultados de análise dos filmes de escória do fluxante referência e a sua versão isenta de flúor via microscópio eletrônico de varredura e microscópio óptico de luz polarizada. Mais resultados como difratometria de raios-X e análises térmicas também complementam esta análise assim como algumas características físico-químicas dos produtos em questão.

Este estudo tem como objetivo avaliar a possibilidade de remediação de águas e áreas contaminadas com Arsênio(V) e Crômio(VI) em pH levemente ácido pela biomassa Polygonum punctatum Elliot, planta presente na imediação da lagoa da Pampulha em Belo Horizonte e em várias regiões do estado de Minas Gerais. Todos os ensaios de adsorção foram realizados em pH 5 por 24h a 25°C. A biomassa foi caracterizada por espectroscopia de infravermelho e o ponto de carga zero (PCZ) foi determinado por titulação potenciométrica. A concentração inicial e remanescente após adsorção para As(V) e Cr(VI) foram obtidas por espectrometria de absorção atômica (AAS). A capacidade de remoção para As(V) foi de 1,14 mg por grama de biomassa enquanto para Cr(VI) foi de 7,4 mg por grama de biomassa. A biomassa apresentou excelente resultado de adsorção para a espécie Cr(VI), portanto um bom potencial para aplicação para descontaminação de efluentes contendo este contaminante.

O presente trabalho tem como objetivo estudar a viabilidade do uso e a influência do ácido cítrico nas propriedades de pastas e argamassas feitas com cimento Portland CPV ARI, tanto no estado fresco quanto no endurecido. As dosagens de ácido cítrico utilizadas foram 0, 0,4% e 0,8% em relação à massa do aglomerante. Nas pastas de cimento produzidas, foram feitos ensaios de determinação da água de consistência normal e tempo de início e fim de pega. Já nas argamassas foram realizados ensaios de determinação do índice de consistência, densidade de massa, teor de ar incorporado no estado fresco, resistência à compressão axial, nas idades de 7, 14 e 28 dias e análises por meio da técnica de DRX. Os resultados mostram que o ácido cítrico, além de melhorar a trabalhabilidade da massa, contribui para aumento na resistência mecânica nas idades superiores a 14 dias, desde que aplicado em teores aceitáveis.

Diversos são os defeitos que ocorrem durante o lingotamento contínuo dos aços. Um tipo de defeito de forma recorrente encontrado no lingotamento contínuo de jato aberto da ArcelorMittal Cariacica é a romboidade. O foco deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência da velocidade da água de refrigeração do molde, da velocidade de lingotamento, da lubrificação, do superheat e da conicidade na ocorrência de romboidade em aços de médio teor de carbono. Por meio da técnica de planejamento de experimentos, testes foram realizados para melhor compreender os efeitos de cada um dos fatores listados. Após análise estatística feita no MINITAB® versão 16.0, os resultados mostraram que a melhor condição, ou seja, as menores romboidades, foram encontradas reduzindo-se o superheat e aumentando-se a velocidade da água de refrigeração do molde, a velocidade de lingotamento e a taxa de lubrificação. O uso de moldes com menor número de corridas foi também outro fator que favoreceu a redução deste tipo de defeito.

Editor's Note: For purposes of uniformity throughout this book, Coal Preparation, 5th Edition, the editors have advocated the use of the U.S.A. Sieve Series of testing sieves (see Table 6-2) as the testing sieves of modem choice. The adoption and use of the U.S.A. Sieve Series and its forerunner, the Tyler Standard Screen Scale, has for over seventy-five years introduced uniformity into reports; has simplified the comparison of results; and has provided control for operation of modem coal preparation circuits. While a full explanation of the differences, and more importantly the similarities of these two measuring systems cannot be stated here, it is felt that a brief clarification of terms is in order. The difference between the U.S.A. Sieve Series and the Tyler Standard Screen Scale Sieve Series is the identification method. Tyler Screen Scale sieves are identified by mesh designation with the width of opening varying by the square root of two, or 1.414 times the width of opening in the previous sieve. The U.S.A. Sieves are identified by openings in millimeters or microns and also arbitrary numbers which do not necessarily mean the mesh count; this series uses width of opening variations in the order of approximately the ratio of the fourth root of two, or 1.189. Tyler Standard Screen Scale and U.S.A. Sieves can be used interchangeably, and to avoid confusion the nameplate of all Tyler Screen Scale sieves show the U.S.A. Number, while all U.S.A. Sieves show Tyler Screen Scale mesh equivalent numbers on the nameplate. INTRODUCTION Sizing is the process of separating mixed mineral particles into groups of particles all of the same size, or into groups in which all particles range between definite maximum and minimum sizes. This chapter applies the modem mechanical screen and the liquid-solid cyclone (hydrocyclone) to the process of sizing solid particles as applied to coal preparation. Screening is a mechanical process that separates particles by size. Modem coal preparation is made possible by efficient sizing. Sizing of coal is defined in terms of the opening through which an individual particle will or will not pass, or as two openings, the larger of which passes the particle and the smaller of which retains the particle. Screening accomplishes sizing by passing coal of a wide range of sizes through a series of screens, each of a decreasing size. The individual screen discharges are then directed into different screen products for subsequent sale or processing. Screening in modem preparation plants is done for the following reasons: 1. Removal of fine coal before a size reduction step. 2. Size separation of the coal into a coarse and fine fraction for sized products or for processing in coarse and fine coal circuits. 3. Recovery of heavy media from heavy media coal cleaning circuits.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho em desgaste de camadas espessas de óxidos formadas na superfície do aço inoxidável ferrítico 410D após a sua submissão a tratamentos isotérmicos em atmosfera oxidante. O aço em questão foi estudado no estado de entrega e tratado isotermicamente nas temperaturas de 900°C e 1000°C por diferentes intervalos de tempo. O método de avaliação empregado foi o teste de desgaste micro-abrasivo do tipo esfera presa em placa. Com o desenvolvimento do estudo, foi possível executar análises qualitativas e quantitativas a respeito do comportamento em desgaste do aço inoxidável 410D em função de sua condição superficial, como oxidada ou não. Alterações microestruturais também foram consideradas na discussão dos resultados. Concluiu-se que a camada superficial de óxidos desenvolvida após os tratamentos isotérmicos possui boa aderência e tem potencial para aplicação como camada protetora do aço em aplicações onde a sua resistência ao desgaste seja requerida.

Questões socioambientais têm maximizado a permuta entre o uso de materiais sintéticos para o uso de materiais naturais. A fibra de fique disposta no presente trabalho na forma de tecido, extraída do folha da planta do fique (Furcraea Andina) demonstra grande potencialidade como reforço de compósito polimérico. Nos corpos de prova para os ensaios, as camadas de tecido foram misturadas à resina epoxídica DGEBA/TETA e justapostas sob pressão em um molde retangular metálico à temperatura ambiente por 24 horas. A quantidade de tecido de fique nos corpos de prova gerados, foram de até 5 camadas, cortados a partir das dimensões matriciais, seguindo a norma ASTM D256. Testados e após analisados por microscopia de varredura eletrônica (MEV). Pode-se notar o aumento significante da resistência ao impacto de acordo com o crescimento numérico de camadas fibrosas que reforçaram o compósito. Tal performance pode ser associada ao mecanismo de fratura, gerada da interação entre o tecido de fique e a matriz.

De forma geral, as ferramentas diamantadas empregadas no corte de rochas ornamentais são compósitos constituídos de partículas de diamante embebidas em uma matriz metálica. Neste trabalho, para a preparação da mistura das pós, foram utilizados dois processos distintos: o processo convencional utilizando um misturador do tipo cônico e um processo alternativo utilizando um moinho do tipo Attritor. Ambos os processos tiveram a duração de uma hora. Após o processo de mistura, os pós foram sinterizados sob as mesmas condições, pressão de 35MPa e Temperatura de 750oC por um período de 6 mim. Foram produzidos corpos de prova com e sem diamantes. Para a caracterização dos compósitos foi utilizada a Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV), Difração de Raios X (DRX), Porosimetria e ensaio de desgaste. Após as caracterizações e testes ficou evidente que os compósitos obtidos a partir da mistura utilizando o moinho Attitor exibiram melhores propriedades, inclusive em relação à compósitos industriais.

A indústria siderúrgica na América do Sul tem sido desafiada desde a crise econômica mundial do final de 2008, como as demais siderúrgicas ao redor do mundo. O cenário de continua degradação das matérias primas, em especial o minério de ferro e a necessidade de reduzir custos, considerando que cerca de 70% do mesmo está relacionado à produção de gusa, atuando em direção oposta, torna este desafio maior ainda. Operar um Alto Forno com elevadas taxas de injeção de carvão (mais que 180 kg/t de gusa) e baixo taxa de combustíveis (menor que 490 kg/t de gusa), considerando a elevação da taxa de geração de escória devido a matéria prima em degradação (~300 kg/t de gusa) torna-se obrigatório ter estabilidade operacional por meio de boas práticas operacionais suportado por adequado sistema de manutenção centrado em confiabilidade (RCM). Este trabalho objetiva mostrar como a ArcelorMittal planta de Tubarão está enfrentando esta situação, visando atingir os objetivos citados anteriormente.

DOUG HALBE: I've decided that we're going to change tactics here and we're going to be nice to people from now on. [Co-chair makes gesture of intense disbelief; laughter] I've also decided who's not going to be a co-chair next year. [laughter] We thought we'd get a couple of experts for our next presentation: some people with a lot of experience. We've asked them to tell us some of the things that all of you operators out there might be able to apply immediately to your plant. Our next two speakers have a tremendous amount of experience, and I think you'll find what they're going to say is highly pertinent to most plants. I looked through their paper and found some things that I could have used in the plants I operated in the past. Our first speaker is Terry McNulty. A lot of you know Terry. He was with Anaconda for a number of years as director of research. He then was president of Hazen Research. I'm going to continue with our new custom of saying nice things. Terry is the guy that I call when I don't know something, and he's always got the answer. SPEAKER: Who do you work for, Doug? The U.S. Bureau of Mines has established a method for the calibration of class 2 and class 4 standards of mass using a procedure from designs developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). This method produces a weight calibration that is within 1.0 pct of the balance sensitivity. A set of four 1-kg weights yielded a standard deviation of 3.25 mg compared to ±2.91 mg balance sensitivity. The method employs the use of a high-accuracy balance to measure the difference between a set of weights calibrated by NIST and the set to be calibrated. The error of the balance is included in the error for each weight calibrated.

"This study provides calibration of resistance factors (?) for design of driven piles to implement Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) for bridge foundations using Texas Cone Penetration (TCP) Test data. The basic research approach was to compile a database of published full-scale load tests including projects from the Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) historical archive and projects from neighboring state DOTs. Load test results from neighboring states were leveraged by performing new geotechnical borings with TCP tests at the project sites. The final dataset consisted of 30 load tests performed on precast square concrete piles, with pile widths ranging from 356 to 508 mm and penetration depths ranging from 5.2 to 25.5 m, driven in soils. Ultimate capacities for each load test were interpreted based on Davisson, 5%, and 10% settlement criteria. These measured ultimate capacities were compared against predicted capacities estimated from TCP blow count values (NTCP) and design charts following the procedures outlined in TxDOT’s Geotechnical Manual. From the comparisons, statistical parameters of the biases (??= measured capacity/predicted capacity) such as mean and coefficient of variation were obtained. Resistance factors (?) for LRFD were then determined using Monte-Carlo simulations for each ultimate capacity criteria with the target reliability indices of 2.33 and 3.00.INTRODUCTIONThe Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has used the Texas Cone Penetration (TCP) test since its development in the 1940s. The TCP test is an in-situ penetration test to characterize the materials encountered during geotechnical exploration. Texas currently maintains over 53,000 bridges in the National Bridge Inventory (FHWA 2016), and most of these bridges plus other transportation infrastructure in Texas are supported by foundations designed using the TCP test and its associated foundation design method. The Oklahoma DOT adopted the TCP test and foundation design approach in the 1970s, so the foundations for most of the 23,000 bridges in Oklahoma’s inventory were also designed using the TCP method. With this significant body of experience, the TCP method has been viewed as a straightforward, relatively easy-touse foundation design method that consistently yields safe, serviceable, economical, and maintainable foundations. TxDOT’s deep foundation design method is documented in the TxDOT Geotechnical Manual (TxDOT 2012) and currently employs the allowable stress design (ASD) approach. However, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has mandated that the states begin to implement the LRFD method in place of the older ASD approach (Densmore 2000). This paper presents resistance factors at ultimate limit state (ULS) for design of driven piles using the TCP test, resulting from efforts to be in compliance with the FHWA policy."

A engenharia por trás destes equipamentos é de vital importância para o bom desempenho operacional, garantindo produtividade e segurança. Compreender os mecanismos de desgaste do equipamento nos auxilia na tomada de decisão, reforçando regiões de maior desgaste. Para isso medir com precisão o perfil de desgaste, é uma tarefa de vital importância para o sucesso do projeto. Neste trabalho elaborou-se um modelo espacial para estimação do desgaste do RH usando ferramentas da Geoestatística. Através de coletas de alguns pontos foi possível criar um mapa do desgaste estimando valores para as demais regiões. Também foi foco neste estudo analisar a influência do entupimento dos bicos na taxa de circulação do aço e influencia na erosão da parede refratária.

RECENT investigations of the molybdenum-carbon alloys have been reported by Becker and Ebert1,? Westgren and Phragmén2, T. Takei3, and H. Tutiya4. Takei3 studied the Mo-C system by employing metal-lographic and X-ray methods, and the other publications described the determination of the crystal structure of the molybdenum carbides. In exploring this system by a technique previously applied to the tungsten-carbon series5, the results of Takei were confirmed with two definite exceptions; i.e., first the composition of the eutectic, and second the nature of the carbon-rich intermediate phase. Consequently, a more thorough examination of the molybdenum-carbon constitution was initiated in an effort to correlate the data supplied by the microstructures, diffraction patterns and chemical analyses.
