"Working on or near water at active, closed or abandoned mine sites is inherently dangerous. Between 1996 and 1999, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) reported 17 fatalities involving drowning at U.S. metal, non metal and coal mines (MSHA, 2000). Openpit mines which fill with water following mine closure, called pit lakes, present numerous risks to environmental monitoring teams including: a) drowning, b) hypothermia, c) falls to the ground from the top of high walls, d) collapse of unstable access roads, e) rock falls and avalanches from pit walls, f) avalanchegenerated tsunamis traveling across the lake surface and g) rapid degassing events.Some pit lakes are simply not safely or easily accessible for ongoing monitoring. However, the routine collection of water samples from the entire water column on a regular basis is needed to monitor the evolution of water quality over time, verify the accuracy of numerical predictions and, ultimately, manage lake water chemistry and ecological risks. For pit lakes with surface water discharge, regular monitoring is used to appropriately design and adjust water treatment plants in order to produce acceptable site discharge water quality.As a product of these risks and the need for water samples, mining companies spend considerable expense on pit lake safety as part of monitoring programs. This includes training personnel for on water duties and hazards, purchasing or hiring specialized equipment and personnel (such as boats, boat operators, personal floatation devices and cold-water clothing called mustang suits), stabilizing pit walls and maintaining safe access roads to the lake surface and employing spotters who can directly communicate with emergency medical services to watch sampling activities because cell phones and radio signals can be blocked by pit walls. Some sites utilize redundancy to prepare for unexpected incidents and accidents. For example, one Canadian mining company requires two boats on the water during pit lake sampling events, with a third boat on the shoreline, gassed and ready to go. In addition, water samplers are required to hold Marine Emergency Duties training to ensure the entire boat crew is sufficient and competent for the safe operation of the vessel in the event of an accident."

Many constitution diagrams do not indicate the limits oJ solid solubility of the silver-rich solid solutions below 200°C. Thermoelectric measurements were employed to determine this limit in the nieighborhood of room temperature. The appearance of a second phase causes a discontinuity to occur in the tkevtrroelectric power as a function of cornposition at constant temperature and pressure. This discontinuity was employed to determine the limits of the silver-rich terzinal solid solutions of the Ag-A l, Ag-As, Ag- Bi, Ag--Ge, Ag-In, Ag-Pb, Ag-Sb, and Ag-Sn systenls at 30°C. CONSIDERABLE work has been done on the constitution of binary alloys of silver. The available data have been compiled by Hansen1 and Elliott.2 However, many of the binary diagrams do not show the limits of solid solubility of the silver-rich solutions below about 200° C. This work was undertaken in an attempt to extend these limits to the neighborhood of room temperature . PREPARATION OF ALLOYS All of the alloys were made with silver containing less than 0.014 pct (by weight) of impurities. The materials were weighed out into 225-g heats and melted in a high-frequency induction furnace. The indium, tin, and antimony alloys were melted in A1203 crucibles, under a boric anhydride cover, and were poured into split graphite finger molds. The aluminum, germanium, arsenic, lead, and bismuth alloys were melted in machined graphite crucibles; they were also covered with boric anhydride and poured into split graphite finger molds. The $-in.-diam ingots were heated to 750°C and were forged and hot-rolled down to 0.1 by 0.1 in. The wires were pickled in a 25 pct HNO3-75 pct H2O solution to remove any oxygen-rich surfaces. The wires were then annealed at 550°C for 2 hr in a dissociated ammonia atmosphere. They were then furnace-cooled for 20 hr to room temperature in this atmosphere. The wires were cold-drawn to 0.0808 in. diam. The finished wires were again annealed at 550°C in the same manner as in the first anneal. Thermoelectric Power. The thermoelectric power of a single specimen of each alloy was determined against pure silver which contained a maximum impurity content of 0.014 pct by weight. The wire specimens were straightened and then cleaned with ethyl alcohol. They were then reannealed in the same way as the finished wires to assure that any residual stress would be at a minimum level. Previous work has shown that the presence of small amounts of stress has the effect of decreasing the thermoelectric power. The alloy specimen was soldered to the pure silver wire to form the measuring junction. A standard set of copper leads was then soldered to the reference junctions of the thermocouple. These junctions were maintained in separate dewar flasks which contained finely shaved melting ice during the test. The thermal electromotive forces of the thermocouples were measured at four temperatures between 15° and 45°C. A known source of electromotive force was balanced against the output of the thermocouple until a null balance was reached. The data were then expressed in terms of the thermoelectric power at 30°C. The results were then converted to absolute thermoelectric power, s303.3 These data have an average error of less than ±0.2 pct. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION All of the experimental data are given in Table 11. Since the electromotive forces of the binary alloys of silver were determined against the pure silver from which they were made, the resultant thermoelectric powers are only a function of the intentionally added binary elements at the constant test temperatures. This provides a direct measure of the effects of the alloying elements. The absolute thermoelectric power of an alloy of silver is given4 by:

The platinum-rich section of the Ta-Pt Phase diagram was worked out by metallographic and X-ray techniques, using twenty alloys; solidus temperatures and solid solubilities were determined. Besides s phase, four intermediate stoi-chiometric phases were found: TaPt (high-temperatzrre phase, structure unknown); TaPt2 (ortho-rhomhic, new type); a TaPt3 (orthorhombic, TiCu3 type); ß TaPf3 (monoclinic, new type). TaPt2 and TaPt3 melt congmentlv; two eutectic, two beritec-tic, and one eutectoid reactions occur in the inuestigated range. THE Ta-Pt system was examined as part of a study of the phase diagrams and the intermediate phases of niobium and tantalum with Group VIII transition metals. Since the main scope of this work was the relation among the ordered close-packed phases occurring in the concentration range from AB to AB3 (A = Nb, Ta; B = Pd, Pt, and so forth), only the platinum-rich side of the diagram was worked out thoroughly, while spot checks were made to determine the approximate outline of the tantalum-rich portion. The system has not been thoroughly treated in the literature; Greenfield and Beck1 in their survey of refractory metal intermediate phases found a o phase between -18 and 37 at. pct Pt which coexists at higher platinum concentrations with an unidentified intermediate phase. Browning2 worked on the range between 55 and 100 at. pct Pt; however, this preliminary study did not cover temperatures >1500°C, and included no conclusive crystallo-graphic data. More recently, a study of the platinum-rich section of the Ta-Pt system has been carried out by Ray,3 while Hartley, Parsons, and steedly4 have studied the tantalum-rich section. The crystal structures of TaPt2, a TaPt3, ß TaPt3, and others have been reported in abstracted form by Giessen and Grant.5 EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The methods of alloy preparation and processing and of the metallographic and X-ray procedures follow very closely those described by Ritter, Giessen, and rant' for other refractory metal-noble metal systems, and will not be repeated except where significant differences exist. Starting materials were: tantalum rod of 99.95 pct purity, supplied by National Research Corp., and platinum sponge 99.9 pct, supplied by The International Nickel Co. An oxygen analysis of the tantalum rod showed 30 ppm O; other impurities were C, N, Si, Nb, Mo, none of these exceeding 50 ppm, and 100 ppm W. Homogeneous buttons were readily prepared as follows: ingots of 5 g were weighed and arc-melted under welding grade argon, followed by two remelts after inverting the button. Between 40 and 100 at. pct Pt, weight losses during the first melt rarely exceeded 0.1 pct, in which case the alloy was rejected, and were nil on subsequent remelts. Since the vapor pressure of platinum far exceeds that of tantalum, the small evaporation loss could be assumed to consist of platinum; therefore, a corresponding amount of platinum was added on the second melt. Since it was confirmed on pure tantalum samples that no weight gain through oxygen or impurity pickup occurs (see Ref. 71, it could be assumed that the uncertainty in the composition did not exceed ±0.1 at. pct for the range 40 to 100 at. pct Pt. For the four control melts from 0 to 40 at. pct Pt, an error of ±0.5 at. pct was calculated. Microscopic examination of the whole buttons after melting showed no inhomogeneity other than local coring. This was eliminated by a homogenization heat treatment. Methods to increase the gas penetration through sinter layers. In the field of agglomeration, sintering has gained importance, specially in Europe; in Best-Europe this trend will continue till the year 1980, since it is quite probable that in the blast furnace burdens with 50-60 sinter, 10-20 % pellets and 20-25 % ore lumps will be employed. In order to meet this demand for sinter, new sinter bands with reaction areas between 300-400 m2 will be constructed. Chemical and physical phenomena during the Suction-Draught-sinter process. Iron ore sintering is generally considered as a burning process where the material contains 90-95 % ash i.e. non-combustible ingredients. Sintering represents a heterogeneous exothermic reaction in which the chemical phenomena as combustion, calcination, hydration, reduction and oxydation are superposed by physical phenomena. The physical phenomena are devided into material transport and simultaniously occurring heat transport processes. The velocity of these combined physico-chemical reactions i.e. the change in the reaction site per unit time determine the efficiency of the sinter process. The gas permeability as an important criterion of heat transport during the Suction-Draught sinter process.

A GPS-based traffic awareness and collision avoidance system has been implemented at mines with long, narrow access roads to help avoid accidents involving two approaching vehicles or vehicles following too close. A simple display in the cab of each outfitted vehicle gives an indication of oncoming traffic and a voice announcement indicates the type of vehicle that is coming as far out as 300 meters. Advanced warning of approaching vehicles is increasing driver awareness, especially around blind corners and in adverse weather such as heavy fog, snow, or rain. Speeding alarms have also been implemented and are especially critical as a vehicle approaches reduced speed areas near single-lane bridges or tight curves. A description of the system, safety improvements seen since its introduction, and implementation challenges will be discussed.

The principal factors influencing the total percent elongation of a lead-tin eutectic and several low-alloy steels which exhibit superplasticity were investigated. These factors are: a) Strain-rate sensitivity of the stress (m). b) Specimen geometry; in particular, diameter-to-length ratio (d0/l0), and surface irregularity (e.g. notches). A feature of the tensile deformation of a superplastic alloy is the early appearance of a neck which continues to extend throughout the test. As a result the total elongation is directly related to the diameter-to-gage-length ratio. The strain-rate sensitivity of the stress varies during extension, mainly because of microstruc-tural changes. A satisfactory correlation exists between the minimum strain-rate sensitivity and total elongation, as indicated in the equation shown below. Notches cause a considerable reduction in total elongation and their effect is greatest at high values of strain-rate sensitivity. An initial notch depth exists below which there is no appreciable effect on elongation. An equation relating elongation to strain-rate sensitivity and specimen geometry is proposed, THE total percent elongation of a tensile specimen is usually regarded as a measure of superplasticity. However, little attention has been given to the fact that total elongation is also a function of specimen diameter and gage length, even though the importance of geometry has long been recognized in the tensile testing of materials in which elongations are relatively small.* In the present study, the effect on superplas- tic extension of the ratio of specimen diameter to length was investigated and an analysis was made of strain distribution along the gage length. Superplastic alloys are characterized by having a flow stress sensitive to strain rate but relatively insensitive to strain.2"' In an earlier study,5 it was found that the strain-rate sensitivity of several low-alloy steels changed during the test and that the minimum value correlated best with total elongation. In the present study, the variation of strain-rate sensitivity during the straining of a lead-tin alloy was investigated. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Lead-tin eutectic alloy (32 pct Pb 68 pct Sn), made from high-purity lead and tin, was cast in the form of 1-in. diam rod. The rod was cold-rolled in stages to 0.25 in. diam and then swaged to 0.125 in. diam. Samples were cut from the rod at various stages of the mechanical working process. Tensile test specimens were then made by attaching threaded steel ends to the rods by an epoxy-base thermosetting adhesive which required a setting treatment of 2 days at room temperature. The rods were seated in the steel ends in holes approximately 0.01 in. oversize. The test pieces thus made were of various diameters and gage lengths. These were stored at a temperature of about -70°C (-94°F) until required for testing. The distribution of strain along the gage length of a specimen was determined at various stages of the tensile test. The lead-tin alloy was superplastic at room temperature and direct observations during testing were simple. The gage length was divided by reference marks into five initially equal units. These reference marks were made with ink and were reinforced during the test when the initial marks became faint. Photographs were taken, at intervals, of the deforming specimen and measurements of the elongation in each of the gage units were made on these photographs. Tests were also done on several superplastic low-alloy steels whose properties were described earlier.5 The chemical compositions of these steels are given in Table I. A diagram of the notched tensile specimen used in the steel tests is shown in Fig. 1. The specimens were tested at 900°C (1650°F) in a furnace through which a mixture of He + 2 pct H was continuously circulated.5 RESULTS Strain Distribution. Approximately 20 tests on lead-tin alloy specimens were conducted to determine the strain distribution during the test. An example is shown in Fig. 2 of the strain distribution in the gage

It is possible to divide industrial minerals into four general categories: 1. fuels, 2. construction materials, 4. agricultural minerals, and 4. industrial minerals. It is proposed to ignore the fuels in the context of this paper and deal in general terms with the others. Mining companies have often considered getting into the industrial mineral business because they can see a resource development with good growth and consistent profits. However, many mining companies being conversant with the metallic side of the industry have spent sleepless nights determining which industrial minerals are most suited for their particular situation. Some have got into the business for the wrong reasons and wished they had never heard of it. Others have successfully adapted to the industrial minerals philosophy and now operate in both metallic and industrial mineral arenas. There is a large difference between firstly, the philosophy and secondly, the functions of being in the industrial minerals business as opposed to metallicÆs. The philosophies can be considered in parallel but it is necessary to clearly have an appreciation of the dominant influences that affect industrial minerals.

"Abstract - Electromagnetic surveys were conducted over the Yava sandstone-hosted lead deposit in Nova Scotia to evaluate the usefulness of such surveys for detecting and mapping sedimentary­ hosted metallic ore deposits. Both transient and multifrequency systems were used for that purpose. The deposit consists of three zones of disseminated galena which also contain minor amounts of pyrite and sphalerite filling the interstices of the sandstone grains. Each zone overlies a basement depression and is separated from the adjacent zone by an intervening basement high. A conductive shale layer underlies the galena-rich sandstone formation at all three zones.Because the concentration of galena (3% to 4% ) and other sulfides is too low to affect the resistivity of the sandstone formations for detection by ground electromagnetic (EM) methods, the strategy for our survey was to look for areas of basement depressions and the presence of conductive shale in those depressions by EM depth soundings. The presence of the galena-rich sandstone formations could be inferred because of the close association of these two features with the deposits in the Yava area. Both transient and multifrequency EM systems were successful in mapping the basement depressions and detecting conductive shale at the three known mineralized zones. The technique, therefore, seems to offer good prospects for mapping similar stratabound sedimentary-hosted sulfide deposits."

"Block and panel cave mining methods are being increasingly proposed as they allow massive, deeply situated ore-bodies to be mined economically at a time when discovery rates of significant near surface deposits are declining. Cave-to-Mill, a mine-to-mill approach for block cave mines, defines ore block models with respect to both mine and mill performance. A cave-to-mill study for the New Afton block caving operation focused on identifying value opportunities related to fragmentation and sorting for a future lift as development progresses deeper. The lack of selectivity and potential for dilution associated with the block cave mining method results in many caving operations having to mine and either dispose of or process material that is below cut-off grade at certain stages of production. As an outcome of the study, the variation in cave fragmentation size and the sensitivity of mill throughput to feed size was examined. To evaluate the amenability of bulk and particle sorting, Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis and X-Ray Fluorescence sensors were tested. A conceptual bulk and particle sorting flowsheet is presented. Grade data from regular underground sampling was used to predict the performance of a bulk sorter. A heterogeneity analysis of material reporting to drawpoints helped to identify areas of the extraction level that experience high variations in grade and thereby stand to benefit from dedicated ore and waste material handling systems should underground bulk sorting be implemented.INTRODUCTION Block and panel caving are low-cost underground mass mining methods that are suitable for excavating weak, massive and steeply-dipping orebodies. Accordingly, cave mining methods have predominantly been used to mine copper porphyry and diamond bearing deposits. Due to the increasing depletion of near-surface orebodies, it is expected that block and panel caving methods will be increasingly used in the copper-gold industry. Their implementation holds significant potential to extend the life of existing open-pit operations by providing an economic means to access ore located at depths that are beyond the practical limits of open-pit mining. Examples of cave mines proposed for British Columbia include the Kwanika Mine, Red Chris underground, Kemess Underground project, and the Iron Cap and Mitchell cave mines of the Kerr-Sulphurets and Mitchell (KSM) project (Moose Mountain Technical Services, 2017; Imperial Metals, 2017; Golder Associates, 2017; Tetra Tech, 2016)."

The solubility of sulfur in Si-Fe was determined by the metallographic examination of heat-treated and quenched samples. In the absence of manganese, the solubility in 3.1 pct Si-Fe was found to be about 0.010 pct at 1000o C, 0.015 pct at 11000C, and 0.020 pct at 1150°C, which is substatntially less than hitherto reported. Increasing the silicon content was found to decrease the solubility of sulfur, which is consistent with the increase in the activity coefficient of sulfur with increasing silicon content that has been reported for Fe-Si alloys. Manganese additions were studied in alloys containing 3.1 pct Si and between 0.013 and 0.015 pct S. At low manganese levels the solubility product of manganese sulfide was found to be lower than previously reported. THE solubility of sulfur in pure polycrystalline iron has been reported by Rosenquist and Dunicz1 and by Turkdogan et al.2 Samples were equilibrated in atmospheres containing different ratios of H2S/H2. Both groups of investigators found a solubility limit in y iron of 0.013 pct at 1000oC and 0.031 pct at 1200°C. In addition, Rosenquist and Dunicz1 found a solubility limit in a iron of 0.020 pct at 900°C. Ainslie, Hoffman, and seybolt3 found significantly higher sulfur contents in polycrystalline iron samples than in single-crystal samples after heating at 890°C in a sealed tube containing a mixture of powdered iron and FeS made with s35. Whereas the single crystals contained 0.013 and 0.016 pct S (± 0.005 pct), the polycrystalline samples contained between 0.016 and 0.026 pct S. Autoradiographs suggested that the excess sulfur in the polycrystalline samples was due to the segregation of sulfur in solution at grain boundaries. Ainslie and seybolt4 have reported on the solubility of sulfur in 3 pct Si-Fe. Their samples were sealed in capsules containing hydrogen and sufficient sulfur as cobalt sulfide to saturate the sample. After heat treating, the sulfur-rich phase on the surface was removed by abrading, and the sulfur content of the sample was taken as the equilibrium value for that temperature. Before the equilibrating heat treatment, the samples were heated to 1300°C to coarsen the grains. The resulting grain size, which was about 3/18 in. in diam, was considered sufficiently large to preclude a sensible increase in sulfur solubility due to grain boundary segregation. They reported the solubility to be 0.029 pct at 900oC, 0.063 pct at 1000oC, 0.076 pct at 1100°C, 0.122 pct at 1200°C, and 0.098 pct at 1300°C.

The Pawtucket Tunnel is a 2.2-mi, 30.2-ft diameter CSO storage tunnel in Rhode Island. The primary tunnel is built using a dual-mode open-EPB TBM capable of sealing the face within 120 seconds to manage poor ground and water ingress which is launched from within a SEM starter tunnel. The main tunnel connects to four adits along its alignment, three of which are SEM tunnels and one being a MTBM tunnel. This contribution describes the selection process, potential risks, and requirements for the TBM, as well as the design of the main tunnel, the adits, and the adit-bored tunnel connections.

A brick veneer house located on a open-pit coal mine lease has been subject to ground vibration levels of up to 222 mm/s, and air vibration levels of up to 145 dBL. The dynamic response of the structure was measured with accelerometers, geophones, and strain gauges as part of a project investigating the response of brick veneer houses to blasting. This paper outlines the project, and provides information on brickwork strength, foundation investigations, and observations on damage due to blasting. Correlations have been made between crack behaviour and factors such as blast vibration levels and rainfall.

"IntroductionIn respect to The Human Dimension by M. Phyllis Bray, this author's impression is that research on long distance commuting (LDC) is long overdue. This type of mining is not new to many workers, especially those from areas such as the Maritimes, who have had to look for work away from their families for at least a decade. Perhaps to the industry the over-all set-up is new, but to workers who have faced mine shut-downs in their areas finding a job was the main objective and if the security of long-term employment was evident, then the families might join them later. This was the situation with which the writer' s family was faced.LDC LifestyleBeing the wife of an underground miner, the author has personally experienced this lifestyle for almost 10 years, and has never experienced accommodation in a company town. The first five years of marriage were spent in a small rural municipality within 50 miles of the worksite, but the town had industry separate from mining and was not affected by the mine shut-down.Since her LDC lifestyle began her family has been pretty much city-based, out-of-province commuters with two children and a third to arrive some years later. She therefore lived a fairly normal married life with a husband home daily. The author has experienced life with a husband who worked away for five-day stretches and then drove long distances to be home weekends or the portion of time left over from driving and fatigue. She has done the 3D-days in/l4-days out routine, and for approximately the past four years has been existing on a two-weeks in/two-weeks out ritual .The author does not agree that the ""bottom line is that mining families go where the jobs are"" . The miners go where the jobs are and the families fend for themselves with the assistance of the pay cheque making it home each pay period.Perhaps because there are many personal frustrations with this type of lifestyle, perceptions may be inaccurate. Having only dealt with underground operations, there may be gross differences between the pressures and demands of other forms of mining."

THE work herein reported shows that galena in certain organic solutions of fatty acids becomes coated with lead soaps, and that this coating is not only highly water-repellent but is also repellent to certain organic liquids, particularly those [ ] of high surface tension; i.e., nitrobenzene, diphenylmethane. WETTING PROPERTIES OF GALENA IN NONAQUEOUS FATTY ACID SOLUTIONS When a "captive bubble"1 is withdrawn from a polished, plane galena surface under a nitrobenzene solution of stearic acid, the air bubble shows a decided tendency to "cling" to the mineral surface. The contact angle, therefore, was greater than zero, although it was not large enough to be measured quantitatively by the captive-bubble method.* [ ] When pure nitrobenzene' was substituted for the nitrobenzene-stearic acid solution, no clinging of the bubble was observed; viz., contact angle = zero. Although the contact angle developed in air-galena-nitrobenzene-fatty acid solution was small, the organic solvent repellency of the galena surface was great enough to enable good recovery in a laboratory flotation cell.2 In Table I are given the results of flotation experiments using several different fatty acids dissolved in nitrobenzene.

"The viscosity of molten oxides is one of the important physical properties since viscosity has a decisive influence on fluid flow. The knowledge of the viscosity of molten oxides is essential for modeling and controlling of metallurgical process. In the present study, viscosities of high basic Na2O-B2O3 and Na2O-SiO2 binary melts and viscosities of Na2O-SiO2-B2O3 ternary melts were measured as a function of temperature and composition. Experiments were carried out using rotary viscometer and graphite components. Our experimental results were compared with those in literature. Based on the current experimental data, the previously developed viscosity model was modified. The characteristic features of viscosities of these melts have been discussed. The predicted viscosity results are in excellent agreement with the present experimental data in the temperature range with molten state samples. IntroductionThe viscosity of molten oxides is one of the important physical properties since this property has a decisive influence on fluid flow, and is one of key factors to be taken into consideration in process modeling. The manufacturing operations require the viscosity of molten oxides to be within certain ranges. Although, some viscosity measurements on borosilicate systems have been carried out [1-4], the viscosity data in literature are available only for a few temperatures and cover small composition ranges. Respirable dust produced during blasting operations in underground mines exhibits both diffusion and convection properties of the airflow. However, the application of the mathematical model presently used to calculate the change in time in the concentration of blasting pollutants is mostly limited to a single drift and cannot be easily utilized for blasts taking place in stopes. This paper discusses an analytical solution based on considerations that enable us to reliably identify the initial condition. Such an approach may be used for any blasting area regardless of its position, its size, or the ventilation system in use during blasting. In addition, a test procedure using field data is established to determined those parameters not measured directly. As well, equations are derived to find the diffusion coefficient, and the position and size of a dust source from the field data. Mathematical considerations The convection-diffusion problem, for a one-dimensional case, is described by the following partial differential equation (PDE): ct. = Dcxx - Vcx + source - sink(1) where C = the concentration of a pollutant T = time V = the mean air velocity in x-direction D = the diffusion coefficient X = distance away from the pollutant source source = any additional pollutant source specified by an initial value problem sink = decay of a pollutant inside the region specified by the boundary conditions. Respirable dust produced during blasting is best considered as an initial value problem (IVP). To derive a mathematical model, the following assumptions are made: •At time zero (t = 0), the dust source is at point x = 0 of an infinite drift. •The problem is considered a one-dimensional case. •The mean velocity of air and the diffusion coefficient are constant. •There is no source or sink of dust other than specified at point x = 0 and time t = 0. Changes in the configuration of late Cenozoic volcanic arcs related to Pacific-Australian plate convergence in northern New Zealand may have localised large-scale epithermal gold-silver mineralisation to a particular part of the volcanic arc system, the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). The history of arc-type volcanism in northern New Zealand began with the development of the continental margin Northland Volcanic Arc from early-mid Miocene (26-15 Ma). From 18-15 Ma the Northland Volcanic Arc extended south into the northern and western part of the CVZ where it is dominantly composed of andesite with lesser dacite and very minor rhyodacite. In the south, centre and east of the CVZ, younger andesite-dacite volcanism overlapped in space and time (14-5 Ma) with voluminous rhyolitic volcanism associated with rift-hosted calderas and minor basaltic eruptions. This change to bimodal rhyolitic-basaltic volcanism and extensional tectonics was a result of southwest (SW)-directed propagation of the Colville-Lau oceanic island+ arc into the north-northwest (NNW) trending Northland Volcanic Arc and its underlying continental crust. The extensional tectonic regime created in the collision zone between the two arcs is also the site of the 14-6 Ma Coromandel epithermal gold-silver province, which contains some 50 separate deposits and has a production (1862-1996) of about 300 t Au and 1150 t Ag. Extensional tectonics facilitated the emplacement of silicic magma at shallow crustal level and led to reactivation of deep basement faults. The resulting enhanced heat flow and fault-focused fluid flow localised large hydrothermal systems and associated extensive low-sulphidation epithermal gold-silver deposits in the southern part of the province, as at Waihi, Golden Cross and Karangahake.

Genesis 1:28 "And God blessed them and God said he fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth and subdue it and have dominion over it." Genesis 2:15 "And the Lord God made man and put him in the garden to dress it and keep it." Depending on one&apos;s perspective, these two verses from the Book of Genesis either complement one another or are in conflict. I believe that they are complementary. What they imply is that where there is privilege, there is responsibility. Privilege comes from the fact that the Lord created the heavens and the earth and he placed man on the earth to have dominion over it. The responsibility that accrues to us comes when the Lord also said that we are accountable for how we handle that which he has given us. The very nature of our responsibilities in resource utilization or, more appropriately, resource management, has changed over time as the nation&apos;s needs and priorities have changed. Thus, I have attempted to examine, from a historical perspective, how natural resource policy has evolved, where we are now and what may lie ahead.

Flotation ENTERING the profession of minerals beneficiation (it was plain garden variety "ore dressing" . in those days) I was fortunate that at that time the first major innovation in modern ore dressing practice was being introduced. I refer to the Wilfley table. You youngsters that came into the game only 30 years ago or even more recently, with flotation machines and reagents as your very ready tool in time of trouble, do not realize what the invention of the Wilfley table meant to us. We had but one physical property of ores to reckon with-specific gravity- and when there was but little difference in specific gravity between the mineral and the gangue, we were in trouble. The jig and the revolving table were our only mechanical equipment for recovering values and so that we might make even a reasonably satisfactory extraction, we had to classify and reclassify, and jig and rejig, and worry about the laws and advantages of free settling vs hindered settling and just tire the minerals out.
