Arsenic is classified chemically as a metalloid. That is, it has properties intermediate between those of metals and non-metals. Like non-metals, it combines with many metals to form arsenides (eg arsenopyrite FeAsS, niccolite NiAs, sperrylite PtAs2), but like metals it forms sulphides and oxides (eg realgar AsS, arsenolite As203). Arsenic is distributed widely in the Earth's crust at an average concentration of 1.5 mg/kg and is present in more than 150 minerals.

Reduced intrusion-related gold deposits have become a new, low-grade, large-tonnage exploration target during the last decade. The best recognized examples of such deposits are recognized throughout the Tintina Gold Province of the northern North American Cordillera. Because such examples may have many features in common with orogenic gold deposits, such as anomalous Bi, W and Te, low salinity and CO2-rich ore fluids, and a spatial/temporal association with igneous rocks, confusion and controversy have now become commonplace in classification of many gold deposits formed along convergent margins. The best discriminators of IRGS are likely to be their: +        regional location in deformed shelf sequences on the inboard side of a series of accreted terranes and within terranes that also contain important tin and (or) tungsten deposits; +        local spatial association of gold ores with cupolas and contact aureoles of relatively reduced, alkaline-leaning, and volatile-rich plutons; +        post-deformational timing of gold deposition; +        extremely low sulfide content (commonly <1 vol %) of ores within igneous bodies and the outward zoning, through proximal skarns and to distal base metal-rich veins, from the causative pluton; and +        low grades (<1 g/t Au) of auriferous sheeted vein systems in pluton cupolas.

Historical Background. South Africa's industrial history began with the discovery of gold and diamonds during the last century, and the mining industry was the first chief component of our technological development. During the past six decades, quantum leaps were made in other fields, too, when other industries and research bodies such as Escom, NDC, Iscor, Sasol, Foskor, Alusaf, Mintek, cs I R, SA B S, and A E C were established. These meaningful additions have two outstanding characteristics. Firstly, they were linked mainly to primary activities such as energy and minerals and, secondly, their establishment was to a large extent due to the driving force of individuals such as Van der Bijl, Van Eck, Rossouw, Schonland, and Roux, rather than to impersonal government policy. Encouraging signs of the evolution of such policy has emerged during the past few years.

As core part of flotation column, aerator has been always priority research. A new type of porous aerator made of stainless sintered microcellular material is designed , which diameter is between 20µm to 40µm. High bubble surface area flux is obtained at low air pressure 20kPa by this type of aerator in water. In order to extend its applied range ,experiments were carried out in alkali slurry (pH=12) , resulting with porous aerator clogged after working 20 days . Sampling the cross-section of aerator detected by microscope and X-ray diffraction ,the reason clogging was found. Then plugging aerator was reactivated after putting it in acidic liquor treated by ultrasonic for about ten minutes. On-line aerator maintenance can be done in no down time , and it can be repetitive-used after recovered ,so reduced capital costs.

A laboratory study of acid-ferrous sulfate treatment of low-grade manganese ores from the Cuyuna range, Minnesota resulted in 93-percent extraction of manganese as manganese sulfate with consumption of 3.8 pounds of H2S04 per pound of extracted manganese. Two types of ore were treated in consecutive stages. The first are contained carbonate minerals of manganese and iron, both soluble in H2S04 solution. The second ore contained manganese oxide minerals, insoluble in straight acid solution but soluble in the ferrous sulfate solution obtained from treating the first ore. Leaching data were obtained by countercurrent percolation of coarse (minus-1/2-inch) ore particles at room temperature and by agitating minus-65-mesh ore particles in heated solution. Extraction of manganese and acid consumption were the same, but the percolation leach required 6 days compared with 1 hour for hot agitation. Variations in the size of ore particles treated, leaching time, acid concentration, solution temperatures, and method of applying ferrous sulfate solution to the oxide ore were studied. The effects of several reagents for removing iron from solution and improving filtration were also studied.

The use of thermal imaging camera systems to enhance mobile safety is a relatively new concept as it relates to their use in both transportation and heavy equipment operation. This technology, like so many before it, has been adopted for civilian use from its military roots. The identification of enemy combatants through their heat signature has given our troops a decisive edge in military operations in total darkness Likewise, the ability to discern people and objects that give off heat is a significant step forward in collision and accident avoidance. The PathFindIR camera system that I am demonstrating today is so advanced that it cannot be exported outside of continental North America without a US government approved export license I would like to commence my presentation with a short video clip that discusses the technology associated with the FLIR PathFindIR Thermal Imaging camera systems. The video demonstrates the operational effectiveness of thermal imaging camera systems installed on a vehicle operating on the roadway at night, of course there are definite parallels to use in a mining environment, primarily the fact that lighting is limited and the chance for vision limiting dust is ever present. We are, of course more concerned with personnel safety in our mines than encountering wildlife on the roadside. From the same perspective, the transport driver is just as concerned with encountering a stalled vehicle as our mine truck operators are with other mine traffic.

A modified falling ball technique for measuring the viscosity of liquids is described. It consists of recording the weight vs. time of a crucible holding the liquid of unknown viscosity, as a solid ball, or liquid drop, is let to fall through the liquid. This method does not require measurements at constant terminal velocity, as the conventional falling ball technique. Also, measurements do not depend on visual observation, which is not possible in opaque liquids or containers. The effect of process parameters on the utility of this method and its potential application to liquid systems of metallurgical interest were analyzed theoretically. The paper also com- pares the gravimetric method to the conventional falling ball technique for measuring viscosity.

Difference between plant feed specifications in practice and design feed is a problem that most of processing plants face during operating and commissioning. This topic has led to inappropriate operating and necessitates repeating the basic tests on new feed. Gol-E-Gohar fourth concentrate line with a capacity of 2 MTPY, located in Kerman province, is the first iron concentrate plant in Iran in which High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) technology has been applied. Plant&apos;s feed consists of 30% AG mills pebbles of lines 1-3 and 70% run of mine crushed ore whose Fe=51%, Fe/FeO=2.5, S=1.7% and work index=15 kWh/t. Desired concentrate has Fe>68% and S<0.7%. After the plant construction and operation commencement, providing design feed was not possible due to the crushing unit`s not being complete, therefore the plant was fed by AG mills pebbles. For predicting optimal conditions of the plant and investigating the possibility of improving the current concentrate specifications, sampling from the new feed and laboratory and pilot tests was performed again. Studies showed that new feed has Fe=41%, Fe/FeO=3.5, work index=17 kWh/t. Results of laboratory tests with Davis tube device and pilot tests run using magnetic separators with simulating the plant`s circuit showed that with current feed, achievable recovery in industrial scale would be 75.52% which compared to plant&apos;s recovery in studied period (75.94%) shows that plant operated in optimal conditions. To improve the current concentrate specifications (Fe=66%, S=1.03%, Ferec=75.94%) and for achieving desired concentrate, samples were reground to four fractions with k100= 300, 212, 100, 45 and Davis tube tests were performed on each of the samples separately. Results showed that the fraction whose k100=212 µm or k80=200 µm has respective Fe and S grades of 68.27% and 0.681% which are consistent with the desired concentrate.

Ventilation is part of all underground mine operations and is undertaken in order to introduce fresh, cool air to the workings and to remove stale, affected air. It is problematic to obtain efficient and accurate estimates of volume flow and static pressure in the installed operational configuration for the auxiliary axial flow fans.An empirical method was developed to estimate the static pressure and volume flow through a calibrated differential pressure port on axial flow fans. Prior to shipping, each fan is performance tested according to BS 848 (ISO 5801) to establish the fan performance curves. In addition to the standard required parameters captured to fully describe the performance, the differential pressure is measured across the fan rotor to enable correlation with the characteristic fan curve.The method was implemented on a ruggedised tablet PC platform. This compact platform is then used to calculate the volume flow rate from the differential pressure sensor measurement input via a USB port. The result is a real-time measurement of volume flow and operating point of the fan system. This can be used effectively in overall modelling of the mine auxiliary ventilation systems and calculation of system resistance could provide a health indication of the fan and duct system.CITATION:Ratner, G and Viviers, S, 2013. Competitiveness in Electric Arc Furnace production is pushing steelmakers to increase the throughput at the lowest expenditure. The technological challenge is therefore to operate the existing facilities at their top capabilities and to exploit materials and energy sources at the upmost yield and efficiency. Moreover, seizing the opportunity offered from the price variability of metallic feedstock calls for flexible practices, versatile equipment and tools to rapidly tune the melting profiles without hindering steel quality and equipment lifetime. The innovative Danieli Q-MELT Automatic EAF system addresses these aspects implementing a centralized control system which interacts with multiple technological packages. Each of these cutting-edge technologies focuses on one aspect of the EAF cycle, increasing machine availability and resource efficiency, by means of electrode regulation and foamy slag control, charging optimization, off-gas analysis and closed loop injectors control. Moreover, these modules provide the process supervisor application (Melt Model) with important information regarding the process status, thus allowing the adoption of a unified control strategy. The supervisor implements a robust statistical approach to identify process deviations in real time. The first results and technology perspectives inferred from the field immediately after the start-up are described in this paper.

"This paper describes the challenges of mining a sill pillar under various types of paste backfill quality. From 1994 to 2002, Louvicourt mine produced approximately 12,600,000 t grading 3.5% Cu, 1.5% Zn, 27 g/mt Ag, and 0.85 g/mt Au. The mining method is transverse blasthole stoping, mining primary and secondary stopes. The production of this 4,300 t/d operation was accomplished using two mining horizons; from the 655 m level to the 415 m level and from the 860 m level to the 680 m level. The main sill pillar is between the 680 m level and the 655 m level. The second sill pillar is between the 885 m level and the 860 m level representing a quarter of the main sill pillar in size. Since 2002, production has gradually decreased and mining activities are expected to end in mid-2005. The sill pillar production will represent almost 25% of the total mine production. The overall recovery of the sill pillars stopes will be discussed in this paper. To recover the sill pillars, more than 1,500 m of development was planned in or under paste backfill. The first sill pillar stopes under paste backfill were mined out in 2002 with excellent results."

Gypsum plaster is calcium sulfate hemihydrate (CaS04-1/2H2O). There are two varieties, commonly designated as a and ß. The hydration setting) of this plaster involves the chemical reaction: CaS04?1/2H20(c) + 3/2H20(l) = CaSO4?2H20(c); that is, the hemihydrate combines with water to form the dihydrate. Many substances, when present as impurities, either in the hemihydrate or the water have influenced the rate of the hydration reaction. The objective of the Bureau of Mines work described in this report was to investigate the accelerating or retarding effects of small amounts of dissolved substances and to attempt to classify these effects upon a chemical basis. To eliminate competing effects, the work was conducted separately on the two varieties of hemihydrate; both were in highly pure form. (Commercial plasters usually are a mixture of the hemihydrates, with other substances present as impurities.) As the hydration reaction of each variety of hemihydrate evolves heat in amounts known from previous work, 5,6/ the authors decided to use calorimetric methods to follow the extent of the hydration reaction as a function of time. Two calorimetric methods were employed. One was designed to study the hydration reaction with a large water to plaster ratio and the other with a small water to plaster ratio (to simulate commercial practice in utilizing plaster).

The concept of the circular economy has been gaining traction both in Europe and China.In Europe the Ellen Macarthur Foundation see their mission as accelerating the transition from a linear take-make-dispose economic model to a circular model that is restorative and regenerative by design, and aims to keep products, components and materials at their highest utility and value at all times. The Chinese Circular Economy initiative is effectively a sustainable consumption and production program utilising cleaner production, industrial ecology and life cycle management approaches to meet the national challenges of maintaining rapid economic growth while simultaneously enhancing environmental quality and maintaining social progress. A key characteristic of both of these circular economy initiatives is to design out, reuse or minimise the generation of waste.The mining sector, by definition, is represented by linear rather than circular activities, by supplying resources to society. However, being one of the world’s largest waste generators, the sector can adopt similar logic to that of the circular economy to improve its sustainability performance. Waste is a critical issue along the whole metals value chain, from mining waste to eventual end-of-life products, such as scrap steel from construction and demolition waste or the growing problem of electronic waste.CITATION:Corder, G and Golev, A, 2016. The risk of injury caused by minor roof falls continues to increase in underground mining. Most ground control injuries result from small rock falls that occur in a supported area, but do not involve the failure of the support system. In the roof, these are the "skin failures" that occur between previously installed primary or secondary bolting systems. To minimize skin failures and the associated accidents, several devices were designed and tested in the laboratory to maximize stiffness, minimize material thickness and weight, and ease material storage and handling on roof bolting machines. The goal of this project was to design and evaluate devices that can be installed with traditional primary or secondary roof supports, and that are easy to handle/install under temporary or previously supported roof.

A large number of brittleness concepts have been used in very different studies in the literature. One of them is the B1brittleness concept. In this study, the objective is to criticize the B1 brittleness concept on rotary blast hole drills. The B1 brittleness concept, the ratio of uniaxial compressive strength (sc) to tensile strength (sT), are widely used as a rock brittleness concept in the literature (Inyangand Pitt, 1990; Verhoef, P.N.W. 1993; Neil, D.M. et al.1994;Becker, et al.1984; Evans and Pomeroy, 1966; Göktan, R.M.1992; Kahraman, S. 2001; Yamaguchi, U. 1970; Verhoef, P.N.W. et al.1996; Bilgin, 1982; Howarth and Rowlands,1987; Howarth, D.F. et al. 1986). So, it was used as a rock brittleness concept in this article. The value of the B1brittleness concept is equal to the tangent of ß angle in the following graph. It was seen that more meaningful relationships could be obtained with the B2 brittleness, the under ?Area?(= 1/2(scxsT) = B2) under the curve, instead of tangent ß, (=B1), of the curve.

Five major historical steps can be identified for metallurgical processing as shown in Table I .Gravity concent ration started with, for example, river bed panning and developed to more sophisticated processes such as the Johnson concentrator, belt concentrator and jigs. The South African gold fields were a major developer of gravity concentration processes during the first half of the twentieth century.As coarse free gold became depleted, stamp milling, in conjunction with amalgamat ion , was developed. Basically, rock was crushed under large mechanical hammers an d the gold collected in mercury . The mercury was then evaporated in a retort to leave sponge gold for further fire refining.As deposits became deeper and gold finer, the gold became more difficult to recover ; fine grinding was required to liberate the gold. In the 18905, MacArthur and the Forrest Brothers of Glasgow, Scotland, introduced the cyanide pro cess for dissolution of gold and its subsequent precipitaiton by means of zinc. This process, in vogue until the early 1970s, was commonly referred to as the Merrill-Crowe process for recovering fine gold .Activated charcoal was used as a means of recovering gold from solution in the 1880s, especially in chlorination plants in Australia( l). Two factors probably retarded the development of carbon instead of zinc-based processes during those year s. First , there was no satisfactory procedure for the elution of carbon to allow its recycling and, second, the development of the Merrill-Crewe process for gold recovery by zinc cementation probably discouraged any further work on the use of carbon"

In 1874 my attention was called to what seemed to me an interesting and new nickel and cobalt combination found in Ludwig and Carter&apos;s copper mine, near Mason Valley, Esmeralda County, Nevada. With the assistance of Mr. A. Hebberling I made several partial analyses of the mineral or minerals. I also communicated with my friend, Professor H. B. Cornwall, of the John C. Green School of Science, College of New Jersey, who analyzed a couple of specimens which I forwarded to him. The copper ore occurs in the mine principally as carbonate and to a certain extent as silicate, the latter generally in connection with clay seams or bands. In some places, together with the copper silicate and clay, generally interstratified with them, there occurred a compact shining black mineral (a) containing nickel and cobalt. Occasionally, in cavities, in connection with (a) was found a black substance (b), either massive and in this case very similar to (a) but with driller lustre, or forming an incrustation with rough and botryoidal surface and radial-fibrous structure, or granular and earthy. A few specimens were found having on the surface very fragile black needles (c) sometimes 1/2-inch long, interspersed with needles of malachite. This report describes an attrition-grinding process and equipment for grinding coarse kaolins to the 2-micron particle-size range. The research was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to devise an acceptable method for converting coarse kaolins, such as paper-filler-grade clays, to paper-coating-grade clays, thereby increasing the value and extending the life of the southeastern paper-clay deposits. The attrition-grinding process is basically the intense agitation of a slurry composed of the material to be ground, a granular grinding medium, and a suspending fluid. This process gave better particle-size reduction than that obtained by several other grinding methods. Results of batch tests in 5-and 10-inch-diameter attrition grinders demonstrated that a coarse kaolin containing about 13 percent minus 2-micron, equivalent spherical diameter (e.s.d.) particles was readily ground to give a product with 88 percent minus 2-micron e.s.d. material. Power consumption was reasonable in view of the increased value of the ground material. Comparison of particle-size reduction with power-consumption data for the two units indicated that better performance was obtained with the larger machine.

The European Economic Community (The Common Market) is now shifting from I a coal oriented to an oil oriented economy. The proportion of energy supplied by oil has increased from only 13% in 1950 to 38% in 1962, and will approach 50% by 1970. In the past five years Common Market petroleum demand has in- creased 15% per year compared with only 3% per year in the United States. This rapid shift to oil can be explained by looking at oil&apos;s competition, First; there is simply not enough other energy - European coal, natural gas and hydro-electric power - to meet the demand, Secondly, oil?s primary competing energy in the Common Market is coal, and Community coal is high-priced - it costs more than two and a half times as much as U. S, coal at the pithead. The third reason for the shift to oil is consumer preference for the ease of handling, convenience and cleanliness of liquid fuels. As these reasons suggest, much of the shift to oil and the resulting growth in demand would have occurred whether or not the Common Market organization had existed. On the other hand, the Common Market has stimulated the use of oil by causing a higher rate of energy consumption, and oil has been the beneficiary of most of this growth.
