In this study, numerical simulations of yield pillars employing the finite element method with time-dependent Drucker-Prager material model are conducted. The stress control mechanism of yield pillars on weak floor strata is studied. The development of pillar yield zone, the distribution of pillar stress and the development of failure zone in the weak floor strata are investigated. The study indicates that a properly selected yield pillar size may significantly reduce the peak stress induced in the weak floor strata and effectively control the development of failure zone in the floor.

This report summarizes the results and conclusions reached by various investigators who have attempted to determine the extent to which hydraulic fracturing will affect the secondary recovery of crude oil by waterflooding. It also discusses the most advantageous use of this well-stimulation method in waterflood projects. A thorough search of the literature was made, and pertinent information was abstracted from appropriate reports. A carefully designed and controlled program of formation fracturing is an effective aid in waterflooding because it increases water-injection and oil-production rates. Generally, fracturing has resulted in little or no reduction in ultimate oil recovery, but under certain circumstances recovery has been substantially increased.

Analytical representation of the thermodynamics of solutions is highly desirable from the standpoint of accuracy, compactness, and numerical manipulations. In particular, computer calculations are greatly implemented. Mathematical considerations show that previous expressions have one or more serious defects. This investigation shows a Fourier series to be satisfactory but that it is also possible to derive a new series which fits certain additional conditions. Included examples show the value of analytical expressions in giving a simple characterization of each system using some two to five parameters, the elimination of the Gibbs-Duhem integration, and the es timation of the error for the experimental function as well as derived functions. It is further shown that the present characterization provides easy comparison between systems. IN the past, thermodynamic calculations have depended to a considerable extent on tabular and graphical methods. As the volume and precision of such data increase such methods become less satisfactory. Specifically, the selection of the optimum representation and the estimation of errors require statistical methods which in turn require analytical representation. The utilization of such data require further manipulations which are best done analytically for maximum precision. For example, phase equilibria are determined by common tangents to free-energy curves: a graphical determination is normally of low accuracy. As computers are increasingly used analytical representations become almost mandatory. Insufficient mathematical consideration has been given previously to the selection of empirical expressions. Those expressions having some theoretical justification are generally too inflexible and mathematically unattractive. We consider the problem in some detail and show that a Fourier series can be effectively used. Also a new series is defined which has certain advantages. ANALYSIS We wish to consider the analytical representation of the heat of mixing, AH, the excess free energy, ?Gxs, and the excess entropy, ?sXS, as a function of composition, X, for binary solutions relative to the pure components in the same state. When a distinction is not required, we use W to denote any one of the above functions. One may use a Taylor expansion around X = 0 to generate a power series. As the derivatives are un- known we represent the series as W = A + BX + CX2 + DX3 + EX4 + ... [l] where the constants A , B, C , ..- are to be selected to provide some optimum fit. For the extremes of composition W is necessarily zero so it follows that A = 0 [2a] B +C + D + E +••• = 0 [2b] Nonelectrolytes, which we are considering, appear to satisfy the condition that d3W/dx3 = 0 [3] in the terminal regions. This is the basis of the a, ß, and Q functions used by Hultgren et al.' and others. While this condition does not have a strong theoretical basis it does appear desirable that any analytical relation should satisfy this condition. Darken2 and Turk-dogan and Darken3 have shown that many systems exhibit this behavior over an extended range from each terminal region, departure being restricted to a limited intermediate region. Since we have no a priori knowledge as to where this transition occurs we can require that this condition be satisfied only as a limit at the extreme compositions as a general condition. We will show later how more restricted conditions can be included in specific solutions. Darken2 has called this behavior the quadratic formalism; we call our application the limiting quadratic formalism, LQF. This condition applied to the above power series requires that D = 0 [4a] 4-3-2E +5-4-3_F + 6 • 5 . 4G + ••• =0 [4b] The form of the power series normally used, due to Margules,4 is W=X(1-X)(A + BX + CX2 + DX3 + EX4 + •••) [5] where A, B, C, --. are a new set of constants. (Guggenheim5 has given a variation of this expression in a more desirable form. Since, however, it is contained in the above expression it does not require separate consideration.) This form is precisely what results by incorporating the conditions in Eq. [2] into the power series and regrouping the constants. The LQF requires that B =C [6a] and 4.3.2(D-C) +5-4-3(E-D) + ••• =0 [6b] Thus, the correct form of the Margules expression with two adjustable parameters is w =X(1-X)[A + B +X2-2/3x3)] 171 and the EX4 term must be included before three adjustable parameters are permitted.

Tectonic stress is an important parameter for understanding the dynamics of underground engineering and for the exploitation of coalbed methane. Multiple-period structural features usually have complex spatial relationships in tectonic superposition areas, which provides evidence for identification of the sequence of the tectonic stress period. Conjugated joints and slickensides are used to reconstruct the tectonic stress of the No. 8 Mine in Pingdingshan. Based on the geological unit division and field measurements, data on hundreds of joints and slickensides are collected from 33 stations. The tectonic stress results indicated by the conjugated joints show that there are mainly four directions of tectonic stress: NEE-SWW, NW-SE, NE-SW, and NNESSW. The tectonic stress results of the slickensides indicate that there are mainly four directions of tectonic stress: NNE-SSW, NNW-SSE, NEE-SWW, and NW-SE. According to the systematic analysis of the joints and slickensides, this paper separates the superposed joint and slickenside sets and identifies the tectonic stress periods with their abutting relationships. Three tectonic stress periods are determined and the sequence of the tectonic stress periods is NE-SW, NW-SE, and NEE-SWW. The results are consistent with other tectonic stress measurements for both the region and the locality.

A brief history of TiCI, production and purification is given. Chlorinator feed materials for the production of TiCI4 are classified. The thermodynamics and kinetics of Ticl4 production by chlorination of TiO2 are discussed. Problems encountered in the chlorination and purification steps are outlined in detail. MOST of the current processes for the production of titanium metal require the use of TiC14 as a source of titanium values. This material can only be produced by a dry chlorination process, since it is immediately hydrolyzed in the presence of water. When pure, the tetrachloride is a colorless liquid boiling at 136°C. It fumes readily in moist air, reacting immediately with the moisture to form TiO, and HC1. History The tetrachloride was prepared as early as 1826 by DumasL who chlorinated a red hot mixture of carbon and TiO,. Since then, numerous other mixtures have been used including rutile, ilmenite, beneficiated ilmenites, titanium pigment, slags, and the various titanium metalloids such as TiN, TiCN, TiOC, and TiS2. S2Cl2, phosgene, and CC14 have been substituted for chlorine and CO has been used in place of carbon.

Efficient and successful mineral processing is dependent on detailed knowledge of the materials and minerals that are to be separated and concentrated. Common bulk methodologies such as XRD and XRF are fast and easy, and can provide an overview of the mineralogy and bulk chemistry of the material. However, they will not provide any textural information. Knowledge of the often intricate interaction between minerals in seafloor massive sulfide deposits is crucial in plant design for mineral processing. Samples from the Loki’s Castle hydrothermal vent have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), optical microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), QEMSCAN, Electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA), and Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD). Processing experiments used froth flotation and leaching techniques. The typical line of operation in ore characterization is shown in Figure 1. Mineral processing may be commenced after any stage of ore characterization. However, it is ideal to have completed as many steps in the ore characterization as possible in order to have the most information of the initial feed material. The main economic minerals in the samples are isocubanite (CuFe2S3), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), and sphalerite (ZnS), with minor galena (PbS) and trace amounts of Au and Ag. The minerals show complex intergrowth textures down to the nanometer scale. These samples exemplify the need for advanced microtextural analyses to adequately characterize ore material prior to processing. The complex textures hamper the use of flotation as an efficient technique, due to the inability to sufficiently liberate the different minerals and problems with selectively floating isocubanite. Thus, leaching was the preferred method for extracting metals.

DESPITE the fact that American brimstone production has increased 2 times since the prewar period 1935-1939, the demand for sulphur exceeds the supply. To alleviate this situation efforts are being made to increase the production of sulphur and bring the shortage to an end. The most important developments are being undertaken on the Gulf Coast. One new brimstone mine has been put into operation and three others are being developed. These projects are expected to account for a large part of the additional sulphur production now anticipated for the free world.'.' Except for a small amount of byproduct sulphur from sour natural gas and refinery gases, American brimstone is produced by the same process devised by Frasch 60 years ago, consisting essentially of the injection of superheated water at about 325°F into sulphur-bearing formations through wells which are drilled from the surface by standard oilfield methods. Sulphur deposits vary in depth from a few hundred feet to 2500 ft from the surface; in a typical deposit the sulphur occurs as crystalline aggregates in porous limestone and gypsum in concentrations varying from 5 to 40 pct, the thickness of the formation ranging from a few feet to several hundred.3 The deposits are usually surrounded by formations impermeable to the flow of hot water, the top and sides being enclosed by impermeable sediments and the bottom by dense impermeable anhydrite. As the hot water leaves the well bore, it percolates through the formation and transmits its heat to the rock and sulphur. When the sulphur reaches 240°F it melts, separates from the rock, and flows through the hot channels downward to the bottom of the well. Here it is freed from incoming water and from formation water, which saturates the porous rock, by gravity separation, liquid sulphur being 1.8 times as heavy as water. It then is pumped to the surface in a relatively pure state, 99.5 pct or better. Chief contaminants are organic impurities, such as petroleum residues, which are soluble in sulphur and tend to discolor it.' Sixteen deposits of commercial magnitude have been discovered in the Gulf Coast area. Five of these deposits have been depleted and abandoned with production totalling more than 26,886,000 tons. Eight properties are operating and have produced 65,875,-000 tons to Jan. 1, 1952, for a total Frasch-type production of 92,761,000 tons. Three new deposits are under development. Aforementioned deposits are listed in Table I. Each of these deposits has been found in the cap-rock overlying shallow intrusive salt plugs or domes and buried in several hundred to as much as 2500 ft of sediments. All salt domes do .not contain sulphur; only 16 sulphur deposits have been found in a total of 231 salt domes which are known to exist in the Gulf Coastal states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Ten of the salt domes lie in the Gulf of Mexico offshore from the Texas and Louisiana coasts. Additional offshore domes may be found, but their value as a sulphur potential is questionable owing to the great hazard and high cost that can be visualized at these exposed locations where depths of water reach 50 ft. Marsh operations of Freeport Sulphur Co. are in the southeast section of Louisiana. In general, the country is low, flat, relatively uninhabited marshland broken by many shallow lakes and bayous which extend for irregular distances inland. Geologically, the coastal area is of sedimentary origin, having been built up gradually under the sea by deposition of material carried down by large streams to their deltas. IT Is well known that manganese will desulfurize molten iron through the formation of manganese sulfide, which, being only slightly soluble in the metal, rises to and enters the slag where it remains as such (mixer slag) or is converted partly or wholly to calcium sulfide (basic open¬hearth slag). The reaction by which manganese sulfide is formed is Mn + FeS = MnS + Fe. This reaction is generally considered to be reversible, although McCance1 states- that such is not the case. The experimental work was carried out to confirm the results of Rohl2 as to the reversibility of the reaction. Six trials are herein considered. In each 200 grams of electrolytic iron free from manganese and sulfur were melted in a pure zirconia crucible in a carbon resistance electric furnace. To the melted iron in runs 2, 3 and 4 metallic manganese and manganese sulfide were added to give 1, 2 and 4 per cent. manganese respectively, with 0.50 per cent. of sulfur in each. In runs 5, 6 and 7, metallic manganese andiron sulfide to give the same proportions of manganese and sulphur as in runs 2, 3 and 4, were added. The melts were held molten in the furnace for an hour and then cast into small ingots.

The glass cutting industry is responsible for generating large quantities of waste, during the stages of cutting and polishing. The disposal of this material generates a cost to the company, thus looking for ways to repackage it, so there is the possibility of incorporating it into the adhesive mortar. The objective of this work is the characterization of waste and assessment of the properties of these mortars, fresh, and check the possibility of their use. As for the characterization, were carried out particle size testing, density and pozzolanic activity, for the fresh state were performed tests of air content, water retention consistency and entrained particular index. Were incorporated 0,10, 15 and 20% of the amount of sand. The results showed that the material on display ha spotential for use in adhesive mortar, with values within the limits stipulated by Brazilian standards.

There are no formulas that guarantee success when it comes to obtaining zoning approval for mineral aggregate mining. Local land use decisions often times represent the most controversial issues faced by community. Public awareness, concern, willingness to get involved, sensitivity to the environment and probably most importantly fear of change only begin to describe the atmosphere in which local land use decisions are made. Add to this the public hearing process which is quasi judicial, adversarial, and unfortunately not designed for resolution of disputes and it is not difficult to see the need for an alternative to present methods. Hopefully, some day we will have a process that will do away with or at least minimize unnecessary, unproductive and unmanageable community conflicts.

"This paper describes the operations of the open pit and emphasizes particular aspects of Les Mines Selbaie. The open pit as well as its related services were incorporated into a complex which includes an underground mine and a concentrator. The equipment was chosen with the objective of auto-sufficiency during each phase of mining. The paper outlines the organization and the methods used in each step of mining, notably: drilling, blasting, loading, transporting and crushing. The responsibilities of the Engineering Department are also outlined from the conception of the open pit to the latest follow-up methods. A short resume of the results which have been obtained as well as suggestions for improvement are provided.Layout in Consideration of Main SiteThe A-I zone deposit is located I km from 8 zone. Open pit mining of A-I zone required the regrouping of different services to those already existing.I. The crusher was placed in an area close to the concentrator in order to minimize the length of the conveyors and to provide space for the crushed ore reserves (50000 tonnes).2. The location of the service building (warehouses, mine offices, maintenance, engineering and geology) raised a few problems. Because of the multiple services provided therein , it was impossible to fulfill all the requirements, and the garage in itself is located a fair distance from the pit. Added to this inconvenience is the fact that heavy equipment regularly travels throughout the main yard.3. The storage of explosive magazines has been changed to obtain more surface space and meet government regulations.4. A space has been provided for minor repairs in the garage used during exploration. A trailer was installed next to the garage to provide a lunch room for the employees working at the open pit."

En ese sentido, el presente texto señala la ecuación que describa una rampa en 3D de un tajo abierto, a través de los parámetros constantes de diseño el desarrollo de la rampa. Entre los parámetros considerados tenemos: ancho de la rampa, pendiente de la rampa, ángulo interrampa del tajo, radio de la base superior del tajo (máxima área superior que engloba toda la fase), radio de la base inferior del tajo (mínima área de trabajo para los equipos). Una vez desarrollado el diseño de la rampa en función de los cinco parámetros anteriormente descritos, se podrá determinar mediante la codificación de un software denominados UNI-RAMP, el número de vueltas que requerirá la rampa para llegar al fondo del tajo, la profundidad total del tajo y el ángulo global del tajo. "

Process mineralogy focuses on the chemical components and mineral composition of ore, dissemination size of valuable minerals, the occurrence of valuable and detrimental elements as well as the behavior of each mineral in the process. Through determining process mineralogy parameters and analyzing the characteristics of minerals, the results of process mineralogy study can provide mineralogy data for making a reasonable mineral processing technology program and optimizing the process. A detailed process mineralogy study is carried out for a complex rare metal ore in this paper and the results show that niobium mainly exists in the form of ferrocolumbite as well as nioboaeschynite and zirconium primarily occurs as zircon. The valuable minerals including Th-nioboaeschynite, ferrocolumbite, zircon, etc. have the characteristics of fine dissemination size, wide size range, complex chemical composition and variable physical properties, which mean it is a refractory ore. According to the results of mineral composition of ore, chemical composition of minerals, dissemination size of minerals, magnetism ranges of minerals and the distribution of niobium and zirconium, the process of ?desliming-Nb-Zr bulk flotation? is designed for this ore and the niobium-zirconium bulk rough concentrate with the grade of Nb2O5 9.43%, ZrO2 24.95%, Ta2O5 0.36% and the recovery of Nb2O5 77.66%, ZrO2 76.70%, Ta2O5 75.13% to crude ore can be obtained in the whole process closed-circuit test.

This document presents the explosion-proof enclosures used severity of certification tests solutions to linear transient thermal and stress analyses of in underground mines. The results were used to assess the for enclosure windows relative to possible loads occurring in the actual mine environment. Cast iron electric light enclosures with polycarbonate and glass windows were analyzed under steady state thermal conditions (light burning) and for thermal shocks corresponding to an internal explosion (ignition of volatile mine gas) or external quenching (mine water spray system). Thermal shocks to the enclosure, caused by ignited gases or water spray, were applied via a series of load steps in the transient analysis. The temperature dependence of material I properties and of the film heat transfer coefficients were included in the model. The work demonstrates that thermally induced stresses are strongly influenced by the way the window is mounted in the enclosure. It also shows that the MSHA Thermal Shock Test, if performed on an unsupported lens (or window), produces lower stresses than the lens (or window) may experience in the mine environment.

Following initial discovery in 1991, BHP Billiton Diamonds Inc opened Canada?s first diamond mine, the Ekati Diamond Mine TM (Ekati) in the Northwest Territories on October 14th, 1998. Four short years later on November 29th, 2002, saw the opening of North America?s first underground diamond mine - the Koala North mine. Nestled between the original Panda open pit and the new Koala pit which is in the early stages of production, Koala North represents the only underground kimberlite mining venture in arctic conditions outside the new underground mines being developed by ALROSA in the Yakutsk region of eastern Russia. Extensive underground kimberlite mining has been practiced in the Republic of South Africa for much of the 20th century and continues today. Underground mining represents a key component of the long term business plan for the Ekati. As various open pits reach their economic limit, continued recovery of high value ore at depth is dependent upon the ability to productively mine the kimberlite pipes by underground methods. As a function of its location, size, and value, the Koala North pipe is ideally positioned to host the first underground mine at Ekati . In addition to being a production source for the operation, Koala North is designed as a learning mine, from which to gain valuable experience in preparation for the potential mining of other larger, higher value pipes by underground methods in the future. Fortuitously Koala North was available for development so the learnings could be integrated into the Panda mine design prior to completion of the Panda pit. Establishing our first underground diamond mine, and applying the open benching mining method in arctic conditions brings a unique combination of mining challenges together in a harsh climate and remote environment. This paper examines the design and establishment of the Koala North mine. Discussion includes experiences gained from the first year of development, production start-up, and provides a brief overview of our potential underground future at Ekati .

The pottery department has been aptly described as the "heart of the zinc plant," md every operator of a horizontal-retort plant is acquainted with the fact that good retort practice is the keystone of the smelting process. Since retorts and condensers are clay products, it is obvious that improvements in other branches of the ceramic industry should be observed for possible adoption in the pottery process for zinc smelting. Deaeration of clay bodies is one of the improvements that have become fully, established in many brick and pottery plants. Our investigation of a number of these installations always yielded the same answer—improved practice. Improvement in workability, elimination of laminations, less porosity, greater wet and dry strength, were among the claims put forth for this process. All of these features are exceedingly desirable characteristics in the manufacture of a zinc retort. A preliminary test, which involved truck transportation of deaired slugs over a relatively long distance, did show the value of many of these characteristics in forming the retort. Results from the standpoint of , longer retort life in the smelting furnace were not outstanding. The idea lay dormant for several years but was revived again in 1940, when it was decided to make whatever changes were necessary in the equipment for pottery manufacture to fully demonstrate the process. A number of the manu- facturers of machinery for clay work were asked to submit proposals, and the plan finally adopted was extremely simple and economical. Machine FOR DeaeRRATING Selection of the ''Straight-line'' principle for conversion of the "Wettengel" pug mill to a ''vacuum-extrusion" machine preserved some usable parts of the original equipment, such as the drive mechanism, and main shaft. The converted machine consists of a feed hopper, a compression and shredding zone, a vacuum chamber, and an extrusion barrel, as shown in Fig. I. In operation the clay mix travels from the feed hopper into the compression zone, where it is compressed and finally forced around the tapered cone into the vacuum chamber. As it enters this chamber the clay body is shredded into thin plates, for exFosure to the vacuum. The shredder consists of a hub mounted on the main shaft, to which are bolted segmental sections, each of which carries shredder knives. The compression zone and extrusion barrel function as seals for the vacuum chamber and the shredded clay mix is agitated thoroughly during its exposure to the vacuum. Introduction A Hypothetical Scenario: Suppose that your company's research department has developed a new device which represents a significant innovation. You would like to begin selling it as soon as possible. The new device has not been publicly disclosed. You're not sure about what type of intellectual property protection you should be seeking, or when you should be seeking it. As discussed below, assuming that the costs are worth it, a patent application probably should be filed before any public disclosure is made. In general, if you do not file a patent application prior to a public disclosure, you will lose rights. Major Types of Intellectual Property In this paper, intellectual property protection is broadly discussed. Practical steps which can be taken to minimize the possibility of losing intellectual property rights (and maximizing the possibility of benefiting from your company's intellectual property) are outlined at the end of this paper. The issues discussed in this paper are somewhat complex, because a number of outcomes are possible, depending on the facts. It is strongly recommended that you seek legal advice in your jurisdiction in connection with any particular circumstances relating to intellectual property rights. "Intellectual property" refers to a number of different types of rights. The major types of intellectual property are: (i) patents; (ii) trademarks; and (iii) copyright. Trade secrets are also usually considered to be a type of intellectual property, and they are also discussed in this paper because of their importance. In general, each of these types of intellectual property protects different subject matter, although there can be some overlap. Intellectual property rights are generally territorial in nature. The scope of protection of a type of intellectual property in a country (e.g., patent protection) depends on whether the specific national requirements for protection have been met.

The Fosterville Goldmine in Victoria Australia employs the BIOX« Process to liberate gold from its sulfidic flotation concentrate through bacterial oxidation. Gold occurrence is primarily as submicron particles in pyrite and arsenopyrite and has been described as being in æsolid solutionÆ and therefore not amenable to direct cyanidation. Once liberated by the oxidation process, the gold is then available for cyanide leaching. During the oxidation process it has been found that a portion of the liberated gold becomes suspended in the liquid phase in what appears to be a colloidal state. This liquid becomes a waste stream during washing of the oxidised solids and the suspended gold is therefore lost. A method was previously developed using an addition of quebracho tannin to significantly reduce this loss by formation of an iron-tannin precipitate which captures the gold which then reports to the cyanide leach circuit with the oxidised concentrate solids onto which it is adsorbed.This paper discusses the development and plant trial of a second processing step to further enhance gold recovery by use of flotation tailings essentially as a source of extra surface area to capture residual tannin-iron precipitate and its associated gold not recovered in the first step.CITATION:Symes, R, 2012. In current post-industrial America, U.S. manufacturing is undergoing major changes both in the technology of its production and in the size and composition of its workforce. At the same time that computers and robotics move the shop floor toward becoming the unmanned "factory of the future" [1], they increase the need within the overall production enterprise for new types of technicians and engineering professionals [2]. Based on previous works which examined, first, the evolution of the technology of manufacturing toward the flexibly-automated factory of the future and, second, the technical- professionalization of U.S. manufacturing sectors [1,3], this paper looks briefly at the workforce of the U.S. metals industry.
