The Equis and El Roble projects are located in the Cordillera Occidental of Colombia. The Equis vein deposits have sulfide ore reserves of 95,955 mt (105,770 st) grading 8.51 g/mt (0.248 oz/st) gold and 12.4 g/mt (0.36 oz/st) silver with 0.94 % copper, 1.10 % lead and 11.06 % zinc. Ore reserves at El Roble are estimated as 1.1 Mmt (1.21 million st) grading 4.89 % copper and 3.39 g/mt (0.099 oz/st) gold. Geologically possible reserves at Equis may total 1.6 Mmt (1.76 million st). El Roble has the potential to contain several tens of millions of metric tons. Exploration included diamond drilling, trenching, channel sampling, rock and soil geochemistry, geophysics and tunneling. Erratic high grade samples affect the weighting of channel and drill core samples. Secondary reconcentration of gold is also a factor. Sample maps and graphs show the distribution of values to be highly variable. Geostatistical treatment of some of these data gave important guidelines for parameters such as sampling densities, drill hole spacing and confidence limits.

Convergence measurement across the 17.4 m (57ft) high shaft station/loading pocket at Mt. Taylor provided continuing verification of stability and safety. Three levels of instrumentation, consisting of three lines each, were installed and monitored. The instrumentation showed that the flexible lining restrained the adjacent rock. The flexible lining consisted of pea gravel with neat cement between rock and liner plate, wooden crush blocks between liner plate and steel ring beams. The loading pocket is elliptical, 11.6 by 9.6 m (38 by 31 1/2 ft) I.D. The crush blocks were designed to allow 15 cm (6 in.) of convergence. Maximum predicted convergence was 7.0 cm (2 3/4 in.) and 5.7 cm (2 1/4 in.) was measured. Convergence measurements also demonstrated decreasing deformation with respect to elapsed time and distance from the measurement station to the temporary bottom of the shaft excavation.

The level of automation employed in flotation production is relatively low. In an actual concentrator, operators use their judgment to adjust the production state based on the visual characteristics of the flotation froth surface. There are shortcomings, such as strong subjectivity and lagging process operation, that easily cause the waste of manpower and material resources. Machine vision technology is introduced to replace human visualization, achieving a quantitative description of the visual characteristics of the froth surface. The state variable parameters are provided for the identification of the flotation conditions.

INTRODUCTION In 1974, Industrial Miners Mexico, S.A. (IMMSA), agent for the borrowers, was the largest privately-held mining, smelting, and refining company in Mexico (accounting for 32% of Mexico's nonferrous metal and coal production in 1974), the fourth largest company in terms of sales, and the second most profitable company in Mexico, excluding government wholly-owned and operated industries. The company was engaged in the mining, smelting and refining of coal, copper, fluorite, gold, lead, silver, zinc and related by-products for domestic consumption and export. A combination of favorable factors led IMMSA to propose an investment plan amounting to US$286 million for 1974 through 1978, of which US$150 million was to be financed. These factors included: Substantial profits in 1973 and 1974 Positive near-term outlook for metal prices Success of the reinvestment program in increasing productivity Substantial additions to proved reserves during 1973-1974 and Fiscal incentives provided by the Mexican government to stimulate investment in the mining industry. The primary purpose of the investment program was to construct a new electrolytic zinc refinery and to expand and modernize many of the company's existing mining and refining facilities. THE BORROWER Company History Compania Miners Mexico, S.A. was incorporated in the city of Monterrey in 1918 as a wholly-owned subsidery of ASARCO Inc. (formerly American Smelting and Refining Company, New York) for the purpose of mining and processing non-ferrous metals and related products. In compliance with the Government's Mexicanization program, ASARCO Inc. divested itself of 51% of its equity in Compania Miners Asarco, S.A. on June 30, 1965. Subsequently, ownership in the divested share was apportioned as follows: 15% ownership in Compania Miners Asarco, S.A. to a group of private investors, and 36% in trust for subsequent public sale. The company's name was changed to Asarco Mexicana, S.A. in 1965. Mexican ownership in Asarco Mexicans, S.A. was increased to 51% in 1967, following the purchase of the 36% share ownership held in trust, and then to 66% in 1974 when ASARCO Inc. divested itself of an additional 15% of its holdings in Asarco Mexicans, S.A. Following its 1974 divestiture of 15% of Asarco Mexicans, S.A., ASARCO Inc's ownership in Asarco Mexicana, S.A. was reduced to 34%. In 1974, the company changed its name for the second time to Industrial Miners Mexico, S.A. (IMMSA). Fiscal Agreement IMMSA entered into a fiscal agreement with the Mexican government in 1969. The agreement, which was renewed in 1974, provided for 100% of the production and export tax corresponding to the federal government with a minimum of 50% of the amount refunded to be reinvested in fixed assets. This paper describes the application of finite element analysis to simulate the static and quasi-static pile load tests in different drainage conditions. The possible effect of excess pore water pressure will be studied from the simulations results. The results show that the drainage condition has effect on the bearing capacity of a pile derived from the quasi-static pile load test. The excess of pore pressure reduces the pile toe resistance while it increases the pile shaft resistance. The factors which influence the effect of excess pore pressure are also discussed.

A new waterfront park was developed on Long Island in close proximity to the East River and Newtown Creek. The existing ground consisted of fill over soft organic clay, medium dense silty sand, glacial till and schist bedrock. The ground was initially raised to preload the underlying soft soils to stabilize the ground in preparation for site development. The ground was subsequently cut down to temporary grades for installation of foundation piles for the overlook structures and construction of reinforced concrete cantilever retaining walls forming pathways located adjacent to the water bodies. The retaining walls were located in two rows at different elevations along the sides of a steep embankment. Where the pathways converge, some of the walls were too close to each other, and were redesigned as a combined U-wall with a common base slab. The individual retaining walls were designed for adequate bearing, sliding and overturning resistance. Ground anchors were installed to enhance global stability of the retaining walls. This paper presents the design considerations for the retaining walls for various loading conditions, and evaluation of the trial and proof tests for the anchors. INTRODUCTION The New York City Master Plan included the transformation of an approximately 30-acre parcel of land in Long Island City, Queens, New York from a former manufacturing zone into a residential, commercial and recreational zone for middle-income community. The site was located at Hunters Point South along the eastern shoreline of the East River and Newtown Creek (Figure 1). The development included low to high- rise residential buildings, a public school, and retail structures. Open spaces were provided along the East River and Newtown Creek waterfronts in the form of a continuous park providing for recreational and community-related activities. Waterfront structures included small park buildings, walkways and viewing platforms. The shoreline was surrounded by revetments as part of the flood mitigation strategy. The project involved extensive site re-grading and several retaining walls were constructed. The earthwork volume amounted to approximately 47,000 cubic yard of imported fill and 93,000 cubic yard of cut. The exposed height of the retaining walls ranged from 3 to 15 feet. This paper focuses on the design and construction of the retaining walls for the project.

During the year 1940, production of crude oil in RiIexico totaled 43,914,000 bbl., or 2,776,000 less than in 1937, the year before expropriation. The 1940 output was I,2000,000 higher than in the previous year. In 1937, Poza Rica production accounted Declines in exports of Panuco crude, fuel oil and gasoline were recorded but these were more than offset by increased exports of 4,000,000 bbl. of Poza Rica crude, which was the approximate amount shipped to Sinclair during 1940 under the terms of the settlement. Over-all exports increased by 1,500,000 bbl. over the preceding year. The outstanding development regarding the destination of Mexican exports in 1940 was the increase of I0,000,000 bbl. in the exports to the United States. Exports to Germany ceased toward the end of '939 and to Italy in the second half of 1940. During the year 1940 the Sinclair interests and the Mexican Government settled their expropriation question. By the terms of the settlement Sinclair is to be compensated by cash payments and oil-purchase contracts. On Dec. I, 1940, Ada Camacho was inaugurated President of Mexico for a term of six years. Among his first acts following his election were: I. A proposal to change the Constitution to restore Supreme Court Judges' terms to life tenure. This has been ratified by both chambers of the Mexican congress and is now before the legislatures of the States of Mexico for ratification. On August 7, 1986, Barge 45, while being towed near the mouth of the Niagara River, was swept downstream and pinned against one of the central piers of the Peace Bridge. The barge rested against the pier with 125 feet overlying the Canadian border and 50 feet overlying the American border. The tug boat which was towing the barge was lost further downstream. Fortunately, the crew escaped and were rescued with no loss of life. There was serious concern about the potential erosion effects of the river currents on the foundation of the bridge pier as caused by the flow concentrations around the barge structure. Due to the time of year, with the approaching Fall and associated worsening weather conditions, it was imperative that the barge be removed as soon as possible. Donjon Marine of New Jersey, the United States Navy's Atlantic Zone Contractor, was called on to retrieve the barge. By this time the original owner had abandoned the wreck.

T. E. PURCELL, general chairman . of the local committee, opened the seventh meeting of the Fuels Division A.S.M.E. and the Coal Division A.I.M.E., at the William Penn Hotel, Pittsburgh, Oct. 28-29, by introducing Harry M. Moses, president, H. C. Frick Coke Co., who welcomed the 500 registrants to "our town." Mr. Moses, in his brief talk, declared that in the postwar period each of the new centers must have a reason for existence. Pittsburgh, he said, has no iron ore, or bauxite, and limestone is scattered and not near by; but Pittsburgh does have low-cost fuel within reasonable distance. Its problem is the economical utilization of the low-cost fuels that remain, as the high-quality fuels are gone. Mr. Moses expressed confidence in this group in the solution of the problem and looked forward to what they would do. Harold V. Coes, the first A.S.M.E. president to attend one of these conferences, responded. He thoroughly believed in these joint meetings - in the cross-fertilization of ideas. Each Division learns from the other. Mr. Purcell then turned the meeting over to J. E. Tobey who presided over the coal research session that followed.

The Cook Islands (CI) possesses within its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) a massive field of polymetallic nodules representing one of the world’s largest undeveloped cobalt deposits, along with large quantities of other metals critical to achieving global energy transition targets. In February of 2022 the Seabed Minerals Authority (SBMA) of the CI granted Moana Minerals a license to conduct our nodule exploration program. This paper describes how Moana Minerals chose to approach conducting exploration activities, one of the greatest challenges to Deep Sea Mining (DSM) development and the securing of the social license to advance to eventual mining of the resources, in an unconventional manner. The remote location of the project poses logistical challenges in mobilizing to and operating in the region and is a significant cost driver. Historically, exploration campaigns mobilized large vessels from mainland Europe, the Americas, and Asia as this model works well when contemplating long duration and widely temporally spaced campaigns without the need to revisit. Moana Minerals, when considering these challenges determined a multi-year deep sea mining (DSM) exploration program conducted in such a remote location can be better optimized by the deployment of a smaller yet highly capable “exploration optimized” vessel that is dedicated to the task and is based full time in the Cook Islands. INTRODUCTION The paper describes the challenges of exploration in remote regions including the South Pacific, and how an unconventional consideration of the problem led to the solution. Completion of an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment begins with a detailed environmental scoping study, resource update sampling requirements, and engineering data and sample requirements, which identifies the exploration goals of the project and technology needed to accomplish those goals. The method walks the reader through vessel and technology selection, discusses the challenges of equipment selection considering size and capability, describes the final arrangement, and provides results from the initial exploration campaigns. We followed the project from conception through the shipyard conversion, mobilization, and initial operations in the Cook Islands. The result shows how a smaller vessel with limited budget makes a large impact on the exploration capabilities in the region while building public trust. The Anuanua Moana is the first dedicated deep sea minerals exploration vessel modified with a suite of technologies that allow it to compete technically with existing ships but operate locally in the smaller ports of the South Pacific. The unique combination of size and technical capability gives the Anuanua Moana advantages over other vessels. This paper shows the importance of the Anuanua Moana in the development of offshore exploration strategies in the emerging deep sea minerals space.

MANGANESE and its ores have been recently dealt with in comprehensive papers to the Iron and Steel Institute by Sir Robert Hadfield, and in a series of papers read before the A. I. M. E. at the Cleveland meeting. I have taken the opportunity of adding this mineral, to my records of the "World's Mineral Production and Consumption," as recently pub-lished in the Economist ?. The tables bring out the following significant facts: The world's production has increased by 10 per cent since 1913. India's production has increased by 3 per cent since 1.913, the supply from this source now being 31.1 per cent of the world's output. Russia is now producing at about half its pre-war rate and yields 19 per cent of the world's production. West Africa supplies 12.5 per cent of the world's total output. Brazil's present output is 2.5 times that of the pre-war period, being 11.3 per cent of the world's output.

The simultaneous sulfation by sulhr dioxide and oxygen of CaO and MgO in calcined CMA (calcium magnesium acetate) were investigated. he experiments were carried out in the temperature range from 700 to 830 "C and at the SO2 concentrations of 0.3 to 1 mol %. The oxygen concentration was kept at 5 %. Each sample was calcined completely before the temperature was lowered to the sulfation temperature. According to the ranges of partial pressure of sulhr dioxide and temperature, there exist three regions for the sulfation reaction: region I in which neither oxide is sulfated, region I1 in which only CaO is sulfated, and region 111 in which both oxides are sulfated. It was shown that the MgO in calcined CMA is sulfated at a rate comparable to that of CaO by forming a mixed sulfate phase. Thus, unlike MgO contained in other desulhrization materials, the MgO content in calcined CMA can be fully utilized for flue gas desulhrization.

"Performance data for both wet and dry grinding of materials have been obtained in this novel, planetary ring-roller mill over wide ranges or operating conditions. The Szego mill consists of a stationary cylindrical shell inside which grooved, radially mobile rollers rotate, driven by a central shaft. The mill has several internal design variables such as number, diameter and length of rollers as well as size, shape and pitch oi helical grooves. It is compact, has a high specific capacity, modest power consumption, and can grind many materials down to ultrafine powders. Illustrative data on product fineness and mill power consumption are given along with results from studies on grinding kinetics.INTRODUCTIONThe extensive use and importance of grinding as a unit operation, coupled with the rather low energy efficiency of conventional equipment provide a challenging incentive to investigate novel methods of comminution. Yet, most current development work is taking place in mill performance modelling and optimization, or with various detailed improvements rather than in the field of new equipment development.This paper is a report on the development of a ring-roller mill invented by the late L.L. Szego which embodies several novel concepts. The mill has a broad range of applications, may be operated wet or dry, and can grind materials down to ultrafine sizes with modest energy consumption. It has been developed by General Comminution Inc. in close cooperation with the University of Toronto."

Since 1988, there have been 17 documented incidents in the United States and Canada in which carbon monoxide (CO) is suspected to have migrated through ground strata into occupied enclosed spaces as a result of proximate trench blasting or surface mine blasting. These incidents resulted in 39 suspected or medically verified carbon monoxide poisonings and one fatality. To better understand the factors contributing to this hazard, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) carried out studies in a 12-foot diameter sphere to identify key factors that may enhance the levels of CO associated with the detonation of several commercial trenching explosives. The gaseous detonation products from emulsions, a watergel, and ANFO blasting agents as well as gelatin dynamite, TNT, and Pentolite boosters were measured in an argon atmosphere and compared with those for the same explosives detonated in air. Test variables included explosive formulation, wrapper, aluminum addition, oxygen balance, and density. Major contributing factors to CO production, under these laboratory test conditions, are presented. The main finding is the high CO production associated with the lack of afterburning in an oxygen poor atmosphere. Fumes measurements are compared with the manufacturer’s reported IME fume class and with the Federal Relative Toxicity Standard 30 CFR Part 15 in order to gain an understanding of the relative toxicity of some explosives used in trench blasting.

Materials produced in quarries have been used for different intentions such as concrete and cement raw material, asphalt and embankment aggregates, railway ballast. Especially in cement manufacturing, the chemical composition and the uniformity of the raw materials play a strategic role in the economy and quality of the cement process. Therefore, it is necessary to achieve uniformity and desired chemical composition and maintain these at all production stages according to the type of cement produced. To achieve this goal the production planning and pit design play an essential role. This paper briefly outlines the production optimization of cement raw materials in a quarry in Istanbul western part of Turkey. For the purpose it was used the 3D ore body modeling and the geostatistical techniques. The variation of chemical components (%CaO, %Al2O3, %Fe2O3 etc.) and quality control parametres (LSF, SR, AR and etc.) obtained from the quarry were determined. Then the values of unknown chemical components and quality control parameters in the ore body were estimated using Kriging which is one of the geostatistical interpolation methods. The open pit design was also created by specifying wall slopes and taking into consideration of the grade distributions of the benches. The most important revolution in the paper is investigating the effects of the block dimensions in block modelling which is important for reserve estimation. The other important point in the study is using the different range values in variogram analysis for determination optimal reserve estimation. n this study, the effects of two parametres on reserve and waste amount estimation were determined according to CaO% distribution. The study was pointed out that the changing of the two parameters are very important for the optimal mine planning and environmental considerations.

INTRODUCTION Underground coal mining has been practiced in the United States for over 200 years. Much early mining was not as efficient as today and unrecovered coal pillars, often of variable size and spacing, remain to support the overlying strata after mining has ceased. These conditions constitute a potential subsidence problem since the pillars will eventually fail. The possibility of subsidence above an abandoned mine must be anticipated except when total extraction has been achieved, permitting subsidence concurrent with mining, or when large coal pillars which have an adequate factor of safety for long-term support remain in the mine. Coal is found in 37 states and is mined under- ground in 22 states (HRB Singer, Inc. 1980). Underground mining produced 40 percent of the 7.5 x 10" kg. (830,000,000 tons) of U. S. coal mined in 1980 (Keystone, 1981). There are approximately 70,000 abandoned or inactive underground coal mines in the United States and approximately 2000 active underground coal mines (NAS/NAE, 1975). Underground coal mining in the United States will eventually extend beneath 162 x 109m2 (40 million acres). Thirty-two billion m2 (8 million acres) are already undermined (HRB Singer, 1977). Subsidence due to mining has affected more than 8 x 109m2 (2 million acres) in 30 states, 7.7 x 10 9m2 (1.9 million acres) from bituminous coal mining and the remainder primarily from anthracite mining (Johnson and Hiller, 1979). Subsidence from all other underground mines has affected only 6.9 x 10 7m2 (17,000 acres) (Johnson and Miller, 1979). Subsidence appears to be particularly widespread in two states, Pennsylvania and Illinois, although serious subsidence is found in localized areas of numerous other states (HRB- Singer, Inc. 1977). Host underground coal mining has occurred in the eastern United States, where the U. S. Bureau of Mines estimates 1.6 x 109m2 (398,600 acres) in urban areas in 18 states (out of a total 1.7 x 109m2 1418,400 acres]) are threatened by subsidence (Table 1) (Johnson and Miller, 1979). Pennsylvania and West Virginia contain 57 percent of the total threatened areas. The U.S. Bureau of Mines estimates the total cost to stabilize the estimated 1.7 x lo9m2 (418,400 acres) of subsidence prone urban land located above abandoned mines is over $12.5 billion (1978 costs).
