The thermodynamic model for species distribution in aluminium chloride (AlCl3) and 1-butyl-3- methylimidazolium chloride (BMIC) system was developed. The experimental thermodynamic data, considering a range of aluminium chloride species, such as AlCl4-, Al2Cl7-, Al3Cl10-, Al4Cl13-, and Al2Cl6 were used in developing the model. When the XAlCl3 was in the range of 0 to 0.50, only anion species Cl- and AlCl4- were existing in the solution. As the XAlCl3 value increased more than 0.50, the available anions were Al2Cl7-, Al3Cl10-, Al4Cl13-, and Al2Cl6. Specifically, the concentration of Al2Cl7- increased in the composition range from 0.50 to 0.67 XAlCl3, after which it decreased. This change in the concentration of Al2Cl7- was due to its reaction with excess AlCl3, leading to the formation of Al3Cl10-. The average cathode current density was determined by the electrochemical experiments varying XAlCl3 from 0.50 to 0.71 in the AlCl3:BMIC solutions. The average cathode current density increased as the XAlCl3 increased from 0.50 to 0.67. However, it decreased when the XAlCl3 > 0.67. This trend can be attributed to the electroactive species Al2Cl7-. The Al2Cl7- promotes the reduction rate at the cathode, resulting in an increase in the average cathode current density.

Since commencement of underground production in March 2006 the Kencana K1 orebody has delivered over 0.9 Mt of ore containing 1.18 Moz Au until April 2009. The Kencana deposits are part of the Gosowong goldfield located on the island of Halmahera in eastern Indonesia. The district has produced over 2.3 Moz since mining commenced in 1999 with the first two deposits extracted by open pit methods. The K1 deposit is technically challenging being a vein style deposit with poor to very poor ground conditions and a relatively low overall dip of around 45 degrees to mine grid east. It is mined under geological control by underhand cut and fill methods utilising cemented paste backfill aiming for 100 per cent extraction. With these conditions the operation was mine limited in the initial two years of production resulting in low stockpile levels for mill feed blending and hand-to-mouth mine to mill production. Mill feed rates have increased from 30 t/h to 55 t/h over this period following business improvement projects while mine production has escalated to match this increase as deeper levels of the deposit are accessed. The operation has now become mill limited. Monthly mill gold production from Kencana has ranged up to 50 000 oz with head grades ranging between 8 g/t and 122 g/t Au on a daily basis. As individual grade control assays can extend into the per cent Au range there are challenges in sampling, modelling, mining, blending and milling the Kencana orebody. At the time of commencement of ore driving in K1 the national geology team had little prior experience in underground mining and systems were in early development. The variances in feed grade and tonnages have been reduced with time as the operation evolves and business improvement initiatives are undertaken to smooth peaks and troughs in ore supply. Two such initiatives in the geology department have added over US$20 M of additional revenue per annum.

"Nanostructured powders (particle diameter of 1 - 100 nm) have uses in electronic, magnetic, structural, thermal applications as well as advanced processing of materials. Among many methods of making nanostructured powders, chemical routes offer many attractive features such as feasibility of cost-effective bulk quantity production, design of chemistry at the molecular scale, and chemical homogeneity of the powders. In this talk, two systems of chemically synthesized nanocomposite powders are presented, namely, granular magnetic materials of Fe-Cu and Co-Cu, and thermal-structural materials of AIN-BN. Synthesis and processing, characterization and properties of these materials are discussed.IntroductionNanostructured powders (particle diameter of 1 - 100 nm) are attractive materials because of many useful properties (e.g. catalytic, optical, magnetic etc.) and processing advantages (e.g. lower sintering temperature) [1]. There are many methods of making nanostructured powders, for example, physical and chemical vapor deposition, mechanical attrition, and solution chemistry [1, 2]. A common method of making composite powders involves the grinding, mixing and blending of constituents powders, but it has the limitation of inhomogeneous mixing. Chemical routes have many useful features. Using solution chemistry, precursors can be molecularly tailored and homogeneously mixed at the molecular level. The chemical approach may result in better properties of the final product. Compared to vapor-phase fabrication techniques, chemical routes are more cost-effective in producing large quantity of material. In addition, control of particle size, size distribution and stabilization of the nanoscale particles against agglomeration can be more effectively manipulated via solution chemistry.In this paper, we present an overview of some of our work in nanocomposite powders prepared by solution chemistry. Metallic systems of FeCu and Co-Cu, and ceramic system of AIN-BN are discussed. The powders were characterized using x-ray diffraction (XRD) , scanning electron microscopy (SEM), conventional and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM, HRTEM), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), inductively coupled plasmaatomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES)."

"Abstract The plugging effect of open-ended piles in sandy soil is analyzed by full-scale field test and plugging measurement. PLR (plug length ratio) measurement data from 144 field cases are analyzed with pile diameter. Based on the plugging measurements, PLR of open-ended piles which have above 1000mm diameter is predicted to be above 0.9. Through plugging measurements, a new empirical method is suggested for quantifying the plugging effect of open-ended piles. The proposed PLR equation is possible to predict the behavior of soil plug in the preliminary design stage. In addition, in order to investigate the behavior of the soil plug of open-ended pile, field load tests are performed on instrumented three piles driven into sand. It is obtained that the resistance components of open-ended pile are separated by double-walled pile system. It is found that inner shaft capacity is developed nearby pile tip. However, upper soil plug did not influence the inner shaft capacity. Also, it is found that all test piles are floating piles and unplugged condition because the sum of inner shaft capacity and outer shaft capacity is calculated about 58 to 76% of the ultimate bearing capacity.INTRODUCTIONIn Korea, a number of huge construction projects such as harbor terminals, offshore grand bridges, and lifeline systems are progress in urban and costal area. In these areas, steel pipe piles are frequently used to support high-rise buildings and heavy weight structures for ensuring structural safety rather than serviceability limit capacity. Also, steel pipe piles are frequently used in civil engineering structures because they have many advantages such as high-load bearing capacity, light weight and outstanding workability. The mega foundations of grand bridges and high-rise buildings are required in geotechnical engineering. Large diameter driven piles are frequently used in several projects.Many specifications such as API, FHWA and AASHTO have been reported as a design guideline of plugging effect, however , the current design method for plugging effect of steel pipe piles are mainly based on the our knowledge derived from observation of the model test or the small diameter pile load test. Therefore, these specifications have limitation to apply the large diameter steel pipe piles.Much work has been done to study the plugging effect by many researchers. Yamahara (1964) reported that soil plug has been modeled as a thin disk element as shown in Figure 1, since the increment of radial strain of the soil plug can be neglected due to high rigidity of the pile compared to that of the soil plug. Klos and Tejchman (1977) reported that the end bearing capacity of open-ended piles was almost equal to that of a closed-ended pile when penetration depth of pile was above 15times the pile diameters by model tests. Paikowsky and Whitman(1990) reported fundamental studies on mechanism of plugging effect in sand. Paik et al. (2003) reported that empirical relations for plug load capacity, annulus load capacity, and shaft load capacity of open-ended piles are proposed based on the model pile tests. As discussed above, much work has been done in the area of plugging effect. But little work has been done to study the plugging effect by full scale field tests."

"Galvanic sludge is generated at the end of the waste water treatment process of metal plating system. The waste sludge is one of the main hazardous solid wastes produced by metallurgical industries. It is caused the harm of human health and damage of the environment due to containing reasonable amounts of toxic metals (e.g., nickel, zinc, copper, chromium, iron, lead, cadmium, etc). The concentration of those toxic metals in the wastewater might reach 30% (w/w, dry weight) making their removal and recovery an interesting issue.In this study, synthesized titanium dioxide is used as adsorbent to remove nickel in leachate of galvanic sludge. The adsorption experiments were carried out isothermally at four different temperatures. The effects of pH, temperature, and contact time on nickel adsorption efficiency were investigated, and the optimum parameters were determined from the experimental studies. The experimental results indicated that pH, temperature, and contact time played a significant role on the adsorption capacity of nickel.IntroductionRapid industrialization has caused increasing the heavy metal concentration in biosphere with the industrial wastes. These wastes are generated in various industrial processes such as electroplating. Galvanic sludge is a hazardous waste that generates from metal plating industry by chemical precipitation of heavy metals from acidic or alkaline solutions during the waste water treatment process. Heavy metals are tend to bioaccumulate thus they are treated the living organism [1-2].Galvanic sludge is mainly disposed on landfills for these reason it is a big problem for environment. Galvanic sludge containing nickel (II) is common because nickel (II) is used in electroplating process [3]. In drinking water, nickel may cause health problems if found in amounts greater than the health standard set (MCLG: 0.1 mg/L) by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The higher concentration of nickel (II) in ingested water may cause severe damage to lungs, kidneys, gastrointestinal distress, e.g., nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, pulmonary fibrosis, renal edema, and skin dermatitis [ 4]. For these reasons, it must be treated before disposed to landfill."

Sable Zinc Kabwe Limited ("Sable") is a base metal processing plant, two kilometres south of Kabwe Town in Central Province, Zambia. The region has a rich history in mining and minerals production, being a major lead and zinc producer from the 1900s up to the mid-1990s. In 2006, a copper plant was built at the Sable processing site to treat third-party copper and cobalt oxide ores and concentrates. The oxide leaching plant included whole ore leaching, solvent extraction and production of 8,000 tpa LME Grade A copper cathode. The plant was placed on care and maintenance in 2014, and Glencore Plc ("Glencore") took the opportunity to convert the plant using a minimal budget, to an Albion Process™ plant to treat local refractory copper concentrates unsuitable or uneconomic for smelting. The Albion Process™ plant comprises an M100 IsaMill™ operating in acidic conditions such that raffinate from the downstream process is recycled back to slurry the concentrate delivered to site thus maximising copper tenor in solution and reducing water consumption. The finely ground concentrate feeds an oxidative leaching plant using the existing stainless steel oxide leach reactors converted to Albion Process™ duty by fitting HyperSparge™ supersonic oxygen injectors and gas dispersing agitators. The leached slurry is then directed to the existing solid/liquid separation equipment, and the PLS is then sent to the existing SX/EW plant. The plant also allows for cobalt recovery from the raffinate. The plant was designed based on testwork on regional copper concentrates. The plant was designed to toll treat a range of concentrates, and so the design was flexible With the flexibility of the Albion Process™ being one of its distinct advantages, the plant was ideally suited for tolling regional concentrates. The plant was commissioned and ramped up in six weeks using low-grade Zambian copper concentrate, and produced exclusively LME Grade A copper with over 99% leach recovery in the Albion circuit. INTRODUCTION The Sable Zinc Kabwe Limited ("Sable") process plant is located 2 km south of Kabwe town and 140km north of Lusaka in Central Province, Zambia. In 1902, rich deposits of zinc and lead were discovered with mines and processing plants operating in and around the town until mid-1994. In 2000, the Kabwe Mine tailings dams were sold to Sable, a newly established company, as part of a purchase deal for other plots and facilities. Up until 2004, Sable produced zinc cathodes in an SX/EW plant treating wash plant tailing material. In 2004, Sable was acquired by the South African mining company Metorex Limited ("Metorex"), and in 2006 a copper/cobalt SX/EW plant was built to produce copper cathode from malachite ore supplied from the Democratic Republic of Congo. In 2011, Jinchuan Group International Resources Co. Ltd acquired Metorex and Sable was in turn sold to a subsidiary of Glencore Plc ("Glencore").

VENTILATION in the iron mines of the Lake Superior region in nearly all cases is natural; that is, it is induced by the difference in elevation between different outlets in the mine and by the difference in temperature of the air in the mine and that outside. This difference in temperature is frequently augmented by placing a steampipe in the upcast shaft; but aside from this, artificial aids to ventilation have been rare until - recent years. In some of the older mines, as at the Cliffs Shaft mine at Ishpeming, Mich., in the 80's, fans have been used when there was only one opening to surface, but their use was abandoned as soon as a natural circulation of air started. In recent years, the Newport mine at Ironwood, Mich., was the first to use positive mechanical ventilation. The installation was not large enough, however, to give definite results, reliance being placed largely on natural ventilation. With the coming of warm weather in the spring of 1914, the necessity of positive mechanical ventilation at the Lake mine of the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. at Ishpeming, Mich., became evident. The workings of the Lake mine are under the bed of old Lake Angeline, which was pumped out in 1894, and the mine had been in operation for 6 years prior to that date making a total of 26 years of continuous operation. The total production, up to 1914, amounted to over 8,000,000 tons. The ore was first mined by square-set rooms and pillars, but this was later changed to top slicing and caving. Both methods required the use of large amounts of timber, probably 80,000,000 board feet in all, practically all of which remained in the timber mat. The slow oxidation of this timber was one of the principal causes leading to the installation of mechanical ventilation. The mine was served by only one working shaft, called No. 4, a second outlet being provided by a raise to the surface from the old workings on the south side of the mine. This raise was the "down cast;" but it was very small and the drifts and raises leading to it were too small and crooked to permit an adequate amount of air to enter the mine, especially during the warmer weather. As we look backward Our attention is directed forward. ONE hundred years ago, the manufacture of steel from molten pig iron without the use of fuel first began. In the earlier part of the nineteenth century the crucible process was the principal steelmaking method. It was a costly process, producing only a few pounds of steel at a time; so, most of the ferrous metal output was in the form of wrought or pig iron. With the perfection of the converter technique it became possible to produce low cost steel by the ton, thereby completely changing the structure, not only of the ferrous metal industry, but also of industrial production in general. This was the turning point from the Iron Age to the Age of Steel. William Kelly (Fig. 2), Sir Henry Bessemer (Fig. 1), and Joseph G. Martien experimented with the process before 1856. William Kelly began in Eddyville, Ky., in 1847 and has been given credit for first discovering the principle of the pneumatic converter process. Several years later in England Henry Bessemer independently conceived a steelmaking process similar to Kelly's. Bessemer made public his invention at the annual meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science held at Cheltenham, England, August 1856. As a result of his paper, "On the Manufacture of Malleable Iron and Steel Without Fuel," and his progressive leadership in the years to follow, the process became permanently identified with the name, Bessemer. Credit for the commercial adaptation of the process must be given two additional persons. Robert Mushet (Fig. 3) in 1856 in England recognized the necessity of deoxidation and recarburization of the converter product and evolved the technique for adding high manganese iron following the blow. Bulk samples of silver have beat undercooled lo a large degree in contact with crystalline siliceous and ceramic oxide materials, indicating lhat stable oxides and oxide compounds are not the heterogeneous nucleants which normally catalyze cryslallization within a feu degrees of the equilibrium freezing point. Since 400-g samples were undercooled 250°C in contact with cristobalite, it is concluded that the undercooling required for homogeneous nucleation of sil11er is greater than 250°C. Undercooling was Jacilitated by precleaning the crucibles with a high-fires -sure blast of gas. IN numerous experiments on the undercooling of metal melts it has been assumed that a solid glassy surface, being non crystal line, will have no effect in catalyzing crystal nucleation from the melt. Conversely, it is usually accepted that any crystalline surface, in contact with a metal melt, will catalyze nucleation of metal crystals from the melt at degrees of undercooling less than that at which homogeneous nucleation will occur. Both these assumptions were implicit in the claim that homogeneous nucleation was observed in experiments1'2 on the undercooling of small metal droplets (10 to 100 mp diam). The droplets were thought to be freed of suspended crystalline particles which would otherwise catalyze heterogeneous nucleation. They were supported on flakes of silica glass which were assumed to be amorphous, and therefore incapable of acting as substrates for heterogeneous nucleation. In later experiments, large samples of molten metal were undercooled to temperatures similar to those achieved by the droplet technique by melting in a fused-silica crucible3 or a boro-silicate glass slag.4 Since these samples were usually fully enclosed in glass at the moment of freezing, it seemed possible that nucleation was homogeneous when maximum degrees of undercooling were achieved, despite the large size of the samples (up to 500 g). GRAHAM BRIGHT,* East Pittsburgh, Pa.-Bee-hive coke ovens are usually located at the mines, where the gases from the ovens are not strongly objectionable because the communities are not thickly built up. The byproduct oven will naturally he located near centers of industry, to which the coal can be brought from different directions and desirable mixtures can be made; where also the byproducts can be readily marketed, while the gas can be utilized for industrial and domestic purposes. Not much thought seems to have been given to the gases escaping from the byproduct coke oven, which are more or less objectionable in thickly populated sections. When the byproduct oven shall have been more widely installed, this question is likely to become serious, and it will be necessary to apply remedies. May I ask what has been done, or is going to be clone, in this direction? S. A. Moss, ? Lynn, Mass.-One cause of escaping gas is that the gas exhausters do not supply the proper suction. The response of two structures to blast-induced ground vibrations were evaluated and compared in order to quantify the impact of different blasting operations, hard rock and soft rock blasting, upon the structures movements. The first instrumented structure was a residential type, located in the operational area of a coal mine, were blasting is conducted in soft rocks, such as siltstone and coal, with compressive strength ranging from 20 to 50 MPa. Blasting is characterized by low benches, with hole lengths averaging 5.5 m (18 ft) and low powder factors, 140 to 210 g/m3 (0.236 to 0.354 lb/yd3), resulting in very little horizontal movement of the rock during the blast. The second structure was a commercial building, located in a basalt quarry (compressive strength between 109 and 180 MPa), where blasting is conducted in 12 m (39.4 ft) benches with powder factors ranging from 200 to 350 g/m3 (0.337 to 0.590 lb/yd3). Velocity sensors were placed on the structure walls to measure wall displacements and calculate blast-induced strains in the walls, and these results were compared with the driving ground excitations. The calculated strains were compared with the limits of rupture of the cement grout used as mortar between bricks and as wall coating, considered to be the weakest material in the structure composition. The blast-induced response of existing cracks in the structures were also measured using displacement gages and compared to the daily influence of weather fluctuations, such as changes in temperature and humidity, on crack movement. The results show that for the same levels of ground motions the structures present different movement, resulting in distinct levels of induced strains on the walls depending on the geology. The influence of long-term temperature and humidity variations on crack movements on both structures is very similar, during the same seasons of the year. Crack response to long-term weather changes is 2.5 to 3.5 times greater than blast influences.

"The innate ability of microorganisms to adapt to changing or inhospitable environments has often been exploited for industrial purposes and forms the basis of many current biotechnological processes. The ability of bacteria to adapt and adhere to specific mineral surfaces ensures that the energetic or nutritional requirements of the cell are met and often serves as a survival mechanism under unfavourable?growth conditions or conditions of stress. In this process, cells may rearrange or modify the macromolecules expressed on the cell surface itself or produce extracellular molecules, modifying mineral surfaces to render them more suitable for growth. The modifications that these molecules produce on mineral surfaces may result in changes to the surface charge and hydrophobicity of a mineral. As a result, these biomolecules may have some potential application as flotation collectors or modifiers.In this work, the effect of long-term exposure of Paenibacillus taiwanensis to goethite and common gangue minerals associated with Australian iron ores on the differential expression of membrane and extracellular proteins was determined. Both groups of proteins play a role in cell adherence to mineral particles. Cells were adapted to grow in the presence of each mineral over time. The proteins expressed on the cell membrane and the extracellular proteins excreted by the cell were isolated and analysed by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D gel PAGE). Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) is owned and jointly managed by Ashanti Goldfields Company (Ghana) and Anglogold (South Africa). The mine is currently one of the largest gold producing open pit operations in Africa producing 620 000 ounces of gold and mining in excess of 70 000 000 tonnes of material per annum. The mine currently has 2000 full time employeeÆs and a mine life in excess of 12 years. Geita Gold Mine is comprised of 11 different gold deposits situated in the Lake Victoria Goldfields of North Western Tanzania (Figure 1). The gold deposits are primarily associated with banded ironstone formations within an Archaean greenstone belt. Current global resources, including Inferred, stand at 129.5 million tonnes grading 3.91 g/t (16.2 M oz). Open pit reserves total 70.4 million tonnes grading 4.16 g/t (9.4 M oz). The majority of the gold resource is hosted by the three deposits (Nyankanga, Lone Cone and Geita Hill) within the æGeita TrendÆ a large and continuous (>4 km long) mineralised zone (Adofo, 2002). Geita Gold Mine commenced operations in June 2000, as the second large-scale open pit gold mine in Tanzania. The new workforce of 800 people had no previous experience in open pit gold mining. Since the start of the operation, Geita Gold MineÆs management ambition was to become a world leader in the application of best practice in all technical disciplines and in operational success. Staff development and training was identified as one of the major components in the company achieving its aim. Geita Gold MineÆs management has committed the necessary training staff, resources and the commitment of over $US 1 M a year to staff training and development programs for 2003 and 2004. The process and management of Geita Gold MineÆs mining geology staff training and development program is presented in this paper.

Xanthates have been used as collectors of sulfide minerals in the concentration of ores by flotation for over a decade, yet much remains to be done to elucidate the underlying reasons for the remarkable effectiveness of these compounds in this connection. Briefly stated, the known facts concerning the effect of these reagents on the floatability of minerals are as follows: 1. Xanthates are without effect on silicates, silica, and generally on minerals currently regarded as "gangues." 2. Xanthates in very small amount increase enormously the floatability of sulfides of copper, lead, silver, iron and mercury. 3. If zinc sulfides are first '(activated," as by treatment with a copper salt, they are readily floated by xanthates; otherwise not. 4. Elemental copper, silver and gold have their floatabilities increased by xanthates. 5. Sulfides of elements that are not typically metallic—e.g., stibnite, realgar, molybdenit—are not made to float markedly better by treatment with xanthates. 6. Oxidized minerals of lead and copper are floated if treated with large amounts of xanthates, but not so if treated with amounts of the same order of magnitude as required for sulfide flotation. Oxidized zinc minerals are not floated unless xanthates having unusually long hydrocarbon chains (e.g., eight carbon atoms or more) are used. Iron oxides and carbonate are not floated by xanthates. From a flotation standpoint the most striking feature about xanthates is the very small amount required to accomplish startling changes in the behavior of some minerals. The amounts used in practice to effect excellent concentration are frequently of the order of 0.05 lb, of agent per ton of ore; that is, of the order of one part of agent per forty thousand parts of ore. Changes in amount of agent of the order of 0.01 lb. per ton of ore (or 0.002 lb. per ton of pulp, on a 4:l basis) have marked effects on the metallurgical results obtained. Yet these changes represent a variation of but one part per million parts of pulp.

A necessary condition for a uniaxial stress distribution in compression testing is that the specimen end surfaces make full contact with the apparatus compression plates. In addition all compression surfaces must be machined perpendicularly to the loading axis. In general this condition is not sufficiently fulfilled in a simple apparatus. Therefore on application of the load the compression plate may first touch the specimen at one point only. This may cause crumbling of the specimen if the material under investigation is brittle (e.g., ionic crystals). It also precludes a precise study of the beginning of deformation as the effective cross sectional area is unknown. In addition a complex stress state is set up which renders quantitative work impossible, e.g., on dislocation density and arrangement as a function of stress. To overcome these difficulties a "self-adjusting" upper compression plate is required. A simple and reliable method of achieving this is shown in Fig. 1: A steel hemisphere is placed on the specimen. As soon as the compression plate (which no longer needs precise machining) makes contact with this hemisphere the load is uniformly distributed over the whole specimen surface, and a homogeneous uniaxial state of stress results. An advantage of the method is that the loading is always central, even when the specimen surface is not parallel to the compression plate (Fig. 1, dashed line). Therefore to a first approximation a uniaxial state of stress is maintained if the misorientation of the specimen end surface is small. Two typical stress strain curves of identically prepared sodium chloride crystals are shown in Fig. 2; curve 1 was taken without and curve II with the hemisphere under otherwise identical conditions. The improvement in the accuracy of defining the beginning of elastic and plastic deformation is clearly indicated. The use of diesel-powered equipment in underground coal mines has increased substantially during the last ten years in an effort to enhance mine safety and productivity. Pennsylvania and West Virginia are two of a number of states with regulations governing the use of such equipment. These states both developed and promulgated regulations before permitting diesel equipment in their underground coal mines because of concern for miners’ safety and health, especially with regard to the contamination of mine ventilation air with diesel exhaust emissions. The major components of diesel exhaust emissions are combustion gases and diesel particulate matter. The gaseous emissions consist of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, sulfur oxides and unburned hydrocarbons. The diesel particulate matter (DPM) is comprised of solid carbon particles, liquid and solid hydrocarbons, sulfates and moisture. The Federal Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) also promulgated regulations in an effort to control diesel emissions in underground coal mines. MSHA has adopted threshold limit values (TLVs) for all gaseous components of diesel exhaust, which were established by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH). MSHA (30 CFR Part 72 Subpart D) has established a tailpipe DPM emissions limit of 2.5 g/hr for diesel engines used in permissible equipment, heavy-duty non-permissible equipment, generators and compressors used in underground coal mines. A tailpipe DPM limit of 5.0 g/hr has been established for light-duty outby diesel-powered equipment. The rationale for the tailpipe emissions limit was that an ambient measurement of DPM in a coal mine was not feasible because there is no established sampling method able to distinguish between coal mine dust and DPM. The stringent tailpipe emissions limit mandates the use of exhaust aftertreatment devices for most diesel engines used in underground coal mines today. One method by which tailpipe DPM can be reduced to MSHA limits involves using an exhaust cooling device in conjunction with a high-temperature, disposable diesel particulate filter.

THE shipments of high-grade manganese ore, con-taining 35 per cent or more of manganese, from the mines in the United States in 1926 were slightly less than half as large as similar shipments in 1925, accord-ing to the United States Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce. The shipments in 1926 by 45 producers amounted to 46,258 long tons as compared with 98,324 long tons by 42 producers in 1925. This decrease was due to the falling off of the shipments from Montana. The domestic production of metallurgical ore in 1926 was 26,530 tons; that of chemical ore, 19,728 tons. Montana was the largest shipper with 5713 tons of metallurgical ore and 17,904 tons of chemical ore. The largest individual shipper of metallurgical ore was the Crescent Mine in the Olympic Mountain Region, Clallam Co., Washington, from which the shipments for the year were 3162 tons. The mine was operated by lessees and reverted to the owners in July, and thereafter to the close of the year no .ore was shipped.

The results of a study and effective use of flotation for processing of ores with complex mineral composition containing fine-disseminated minerals with high specific density are presented in the paper. The object of research was complex baddeleyite-containing ore from Kovdor deposit (The Kola peninsula, Russia). Baddeleyite is a valuable, rare mineral, natural Zirconium dioxide with 5.8 - 6.0g / cm density, grade content 0.15 - 0.17 and dissemination less than 0.2 mm. The authors carried out a thorough investigation of baddeleyite- containing products selected in different sites of gravity flowsheet. It was determined that due to similar specific weight some sulphide minerals (pyrite, pyrrhotite) come into concentrate together with baddeleyite and, also, minerals of pyrochlores group (hatchettolite). The results obtained revealed the possibility of use the flotation for retreating rough baddeleyite concentrate. he given gravity concentrate has a number of specific features, e. g. high density of its minerals which, in its turn, provides for high speed of sedimentation of solid phase in pulp, and for the presence of large amount of sulphide minerals (up to 10%) having good flotability. With these features being taken into account a technology for flotation of baddeleyite-containing products after their preliminary gravity concentration has been developed (up to 5 - 10% Zirconium dioxide). The technology has three flotation stages. At the first one the reverse flotation of baddeleyite is carried out during which "light" minerals (forsterite. apatite and carbonites) come into froth product and at the second one flotation of sulphide minerals and at the third one direct flotation of baddeleyite is performed from the underflow product. The following reagents were used for flotation: of phosphate type (sodium tripolyphosphate, mono and diethers of alkylphosphpric acid) and sodium xanthate as collector for sulphides. The given set reagents provides for high effectiveness of flotation due to selective of collectors and presence of froth layer with high carrying ability. New flotation technology of recovering of baddeleyite from complex ore was developed and applied at the Kovdor Mining Plant, using AKER flotation machines.

In recent years there has been an Increasing Interest In the application of automatic control theory to mineral processing systems, and numerous applications of mineral process control have appeared in the literature. A general approach to the synthesis of mineral process control systems is presented. The first phase of the control system design consists of specifying the control objectives, process variables and their interactions; these topics will be discussed with specific reference to mineral processing. The second phase Is con¬cerned with selection of control strategies algorithms, instrumenta¬tion, and other components of the control system and is discussed at length. These concepts are then illustrated by a flotation control case study.

The notch sensitivity of titanium alloys is affected by impurity content, microstructure, and heat treatment. Using notch tensile properties to evaluate notch sensitivity, three commercial titanium-base alloys were investigated over the temperature range of -320o to 390°F. The alloys studied were Ti-5Al-2.5Sn, Ti-6Al-4V, and Ti-2Fe-2Cr-2Mo. Six interstitial levels were studied for each alloy in four mi-crostmctural conditions. The ff- 0 alloys were studied in both the annealed and heat-treated condition. All tests were conducted using 1/4-in. diam round tensile samples. The notched samples had a 50 pct notch with a notch sharpness (a/r) of 53, corresponding to Kt 6.3. Notch sensitivity was increased by increased interstitial content, low temperature, and acicular-type microstructures. The heat-treated, high-interstitial content - 13 alloys were more notch sensitive than the same alloys in the annealed condition. In addition, minima in the notch tensile-temperature curves were observed at temperatures near 32°F. These minima became more pronounced with increasing interstitial content. 1 HE increaseduse of titanium alloys in high strength applications at subzero temperatures requires that a better under standing of the low-temperature behavior of the alloys be obtained. At low temperatures, metals generally exhibit increased strength with lowered ductility and tohness. Notch sensitivity and the factors which influence it become more important as the strength level is increased and the temperature is decreased. Some of the factor s which affect notch sensitivity in ti- tanium alloys are composition, interstitial content, microstructure, and heat-treatment condition. In this paper, the results of a study of these variables on the notch sensitivity of three titanium alloys at temperatures from —320o to 390o are reported. The notch geometry selected for this program was chosen to provide a severe test of notch sensitivity. The ability of the metal to flow without initiating fracture under these severe conditions is reflected in the notch-strength values. Since notch strength is, in part, determined by the constraint exerted by the combined tensile stresses, the behavior of notch specimens reflects the properties of the material under combined stresses. For example, a material with a high notch-unnotch strength ratio may be expected to withstand the biaxial stresses encountered in a pressure vessel better than a material with a low ratio of notch-unnotch strengths. This implies that maximum strength alone is not a sufficient criterion for applications of this type. It further may be concluded that the various conditions that promote poor notch behavior also will affect adversely the performance of materials under combined stresses. In the alloys studied, these included low temperatures, high interstitial levels, and hasformed microstructures. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Three alloys, Ti-5Al-2.5Sn, Ti-6Al-4V, and Ti-2Fe-2Cr-2Mo, were purchased from commercial producers as 2-in.-dam rod stock. Oxygen and nitrogen were added to these alloys by remelting to obtain a variety of interstitial contents as shown in Table I. In order to Compensate for the much more potent strengthening effect of nitrogen compared with oxygen, an oxygen equivalent content is used to describe the total oxygen plus nitrogen contents studied.
