"In metal and nonmetallic mineral mines during the 15-year period 1911 to 1925, 30.17 per cent of all fatalities and 16.57 per cent of all injuries were caused by falls of rock or ore from the back or roof or from the wail; 1.24 per cent of the fatalities and 11.05 per cent of the injuries were caused by rock or ore while loading at the working face; 6.66 per cent of the .fatalities and 2.49 per cent of the injuries resulted from men falling down 3 chute, winze, raise, or stope; and run of ore from chute or pocket caused 1.48 per cent of the fatalities and 1.93 per cent of the injuries.3 Hence, accidents due to falls of men and material caused. 39.55 per cent of the fatalities and 34.05 per cent of the injuries in these mines. Accident prevention can best be assisted by each company's preserving complete records of accidents classified according to cause and rate per thousand or 10,000 shifts. A systematic method of recording accidents and the employment of graphs or charts will be helpful to the company safety department in analyzing the cruses of accidents. The purpose of this publication is to analyze data on accidents caused by falls of men and material in metal -mines of the United States, and to suggest methods of preventing or reducing such accidents."

Dundee Precious Metals Inc. (DPM) owns and operates the Ada Tepe gold mine and processing facility (previously referred to as the Krumovgrad Gold Project) located in south-western Bulgaria. The Ada Tepe mine became the first green filed project in past 40 year in Balkans and one of the few in Europe when it was commissioned during the first half of 2019. The plant produces a high-grade gold silicate concentrate generated through its comminution circuit and staged floatation reactors (SFR’s) while depositing its tailings in a state-of-the-art Integrated Mine Waste Facility (IMWF). This paper presents the successful commissioning, ramp-up and optimization of the Ada Tepe processing plant and how the various challenges, including that of an inexperienced front-line workforce, were overcome. More specifically addressing how the implemented modern processing technologies and the operational readiness program, supported the people and process to achieve the design parameters safely and consistently. A technical and economic evaluation of the potential for improving mining productivity through the use of underreamers in blastholes, specifically in relation to Minnesota taconite, Arizona surface copper and in situ mining operations is presented. Included are (1) a review of the drilling and blasting practices presently being used, (2) a discussion of current underreamer technology. (3) the presentation of a general economic cost model for underreaming, (4) the application of the model to surface taconite, surface copper and in situ mining, and (5) a summary discussion including required performance specifications, potential overall benefits, and recommendations for further development.

The LUMINEOS network was established in 2013 to monitor mining-induced seismicity in Legnica-Głogów Copper District (LGCD), located in south-western Poland. Since the starting time, the network was improved and today consists of 17 seismometers and 10 accelerometers. Up to now, the strongest recorded earthquake in the region had Mw4.0. Both raw seismic data and earthquakes catalog for events recorded by the LUMINEOS network are fully open and available on the EPISODES platform (https://tcs.ah-epos.eu/#episode:LGCD). During the last 7 years, the network improvements gave us a possibility to increase location accuracy for shallow mining events. This accuracy is influenced by factors such as the configuration of seismic stations, noise level at seismic stations, and the influence of the velocity model. Here we encountered two main issues which are worth to discuss. The first one is the low detection threshold of two seismic stations and their significant impact on the location errors. The second one is the large uncertainty in the S-wave picking. Even though S-waves are not so clearly visible on seismograms, they are very helpful in the estimation of source location and strength of seismic events in the region. In our work, we present the history of LUMINEOS network and corresponding improvement on location accuracy as well as the influence of noisy stations on the error distribution and how it is connected with location results. We also investigate the effect of the S-wave phases and how they are related to the accuracy of the earthquakes locations in the network.

From September 1978 to December 1983, ESD Corporation (formerly a Division of FMC Corporation) undertook the development and testing of a bidirectional auger under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy. Underground testing began in August 1981 at Peabody Coal Company's Marissa Mine near Marissa, Illinois. The auger was developed to increase mine production and coal recovery without increasing land subsidence. It bored 4-foot-diameter by 10-foot-deep holes into pillars on 7-foot centers (each hole recovering 5 tons). All operating during this test was performed by maintenance personnel with the goal of finding ways to increase the machine potential. The maximum excavation rate achieved was 1.4 tons per minute. It was concluded that the concept of drilling short holes to extract coal from underground pillars without surface subsidence was practicable with a wheel mounted auger, but that more power was desirable for this mine, and that the hydraulically driven augering system that provided experimental versatility was not sufficiently reliable for production use.

It is widely accepted that particles stabilise flotation froths and that stable froths result in improved flotation performance. Predicting the effect of particle addition on froth stability is, however, challenging. Dynamic surface tension measurement using maximum bubble pressure presents an attractive technique to investigate the effect of surfactant and particles at the air-water interface. The range of bubble lifetimes that can be studied (typically 0.1 to 60 s) is analogous to variations in air rate in flotation cells, and the corresponding changes in surface tension give an indication to the diffusion and adsorption rates of particles at the interface. In this paper, we use dynamic surface tension measurements to investigate the effect of particles on bubble surfaces at the microscale and link this to bulk froth stability measurements carried out using a froth column. Using the maximum bubble pressure method, the results show that the addition of particles results in lower surface tension, both at the dynamic (i.e. short) bubble lifetimes and towards equilibrium (i.e. 60 s bubble lifetime). This corresponds with the bulk froth stability measurements, where the three-phase system yielded more stable froths than the surfactant only system. Furthermore, increased particle loading at the air-water interface, whether through higher surfactant concentrations or lower air rates (longer bubble lifetimes), gave lower surface tension and higher froth stability. This demonstrates the link between bubble loading and froth stability. It is proposed that the maximum bubble pressure technique can be used to predict froth stability for two- and three-phase systems, enabling the effect of particle loading to be accounted for and quantified. Moreover, the technique has the potential to allow rapid determination of particle and surfactant diffusion at the air-water interface and prediction of the corresponding effect on bulk froth behaviour.

Synthetic fibers are being replaced gradually by natural materials such as lignocellulosic fibers. Compared to synthetic fibers, natural fibers have shown advantages in technical aspects such as environmental and economic. So there is a growing international interest in the use of those fibers. The banana fiber presents significant properties to be studied, but until now few thermal properties on banana fiber as reinforcement of polyester matrix were performed. The present work had as its objective to investigate, by photoacoustic spectroscopy and photothermal techniques the thermal properties of diffusivity, specific heat capacity and conductivity for polyester composites reinforced with banana fibers. In the polyester matrix will be added up to 30% in volume of continuous and aligned banana fibers. These values show that the incorporation of banana fibers in the polyester matrix changes its thermal properties.

Excavation of vertical and/or inclined shafts in the underground structures requiring careful design and planning. Raise Boring Machines (RBMs) are commonly used for excavation of shafts for different purposes such as ventilation, orepass, and human-material transportation. Proper selection and accurate performance prediction of RBMs are two main parameters affecting the cost estimation and planning/scheduling. Indentation test is one of the most preferred methods that can be used to predict advance rate of RBMs. This study aims at suggestion of new prediction model for instantaneous penetration rate of RBMs based on indentation tests. Different rock (core) samples (with different geological origins) are obtained from the raise boring application projects in Turkey; then, the indentation tests are carried out on them by using a real-life insert (button), which is used in reamerhead cutters investigated in this study. Finally, the statistical relationships between the field performance and the indentation indices are investigated. The study indicates that the brittleness index (the ratio of maximum applied force to corresponding penetration) can be used to predict instantaneous penetration rate of RBMs used in the vertical raise bored shafts excavating rocks having uniaxial compressive strength lower than 100 MPa.

In 1985, an extensive longwall mining research project was initiated by the West Virginia University Research Center entitled "An Improved Longwall Mining Technique" with the purpose of providing operational guidelines for the mining industry to enable efficient operation of its existing and projected longwall installations. One task involved in this extensive research project was monitoring ground movements due to longwall mining and evaluating their impact on surface and subsurface structures. This paper presents an analysis of the effects of topography on quasi-static and dynamic ground movements and the severity of damage inflicted on surface structures. The site was chosen for the study with an attempt to obtain a representative account of the topography experienced in the Northern Appalachian region, and more importantly to contain a substantial number of varying topographical features i.e., mountains, hillsides, valleys, and flat bottom land. The study was made possible by typical subsidence monitoring technqiues, however subsidence monuments were surveyed on a frequent basis, intermittently during face advancement. Ground movements were investigated under both quasi-static and dynamic conditions. This provided insight into the propagation of subsidence and the dynamic affects it has upon surface structures.

Este trabalho apresenta um estudo do desgaste de insertos e tensões residuais em diferentes estratégias de entrada de ferramenta no fresamento da liga Ti-6Al-4V. Esta liga possui propriedades mecânicas que a torna ideal para aplicações onde é necessária uma ótima relação resistência-peso. O objetivo é reduzir o desgaste dos insertos no processo de fresamento e analisar as tensões residuais na usinagem da liga Ti-6Al-4V. A integridade superficial do material após a usinagem deve ser conhecida já que esta liga é utilizada em aplicações criticas. Quatro estratégias de entrada foram estudadas, sendo que no faceamento foi utilizada a entrada por rolagem e a frontal reta e no fresamento de cavidade foi utilizado mergulho reto e em rampa. Em todos os ensaios foram utilizados os mesmos parâmetros de usinagem. As tensões residuais foram medidas por difração de raios-X (Luz Sincrotron), pelo método sin²?, utilizando um difratômetro de raios-X instalado no LNLS. No faceamento a estratégia por rolagem mostrou uma importante redução do desgaste e uma pequena redução da tensão residual quando comparada com a estratégia frontal reta. No fresamento de cavidades a estratégia de mergulho reto mostrou um inesperado aumento do desgaste e uma significativa redução da tensão residual quando comparada com o mergulho em rampa. Todas as tensões residuais encontradas foram compressivas. As tensões residuais encontradas em todos os experimentos se mostraram favoráveis a aplicações sujeitas à fadiga.

(Canal Zone Meeting, November, 19]0.) THE sudden decease, April 1, 1910, in Chicago, of Dr. Franklin R. Carpenter was a shock to his- many friends. He died in his sixty-second year, of heart paralysis. To most fellow-members of the Institute who have followed the progress of the. last twenty-five years in the mining and treatment of non-ferrous ores, the work of Dr. Carpenter in that line is familiar ; but very few, even of those who knew him well in the later years, are acquainted with his earlier struggles to satisfy an inborn hunger for knowledge. The story of his life resembles that of the pioneer who opens up new country; overcoming hardships with indomitable courage, meeting doubts and difficulties with an alert and open mind, and exercising in the face of reverses an unconquerable perseverance. It seems appropriate to place on record in the Transactions a brief outline of the life and work of this eminent engineer. During the past 15 years of his life Dr. Carpenter was much interested in genealogy. In the pursuit of this study as an avocation, he traced his own ancestry to the time when ?Hugh," called "le Charpentier" on account of the dexterity with which he had swung his battle-axe as a crusader, settled in Sussex on lands received from William the Conqueror. The Carpenters came to this country with William Penn. A prominent member of the family was Joshua Carpenter, the founder of Christ Church, Philadelphia. Dr. Carpenter's branch of -the family moved from Pennsylvania into that part of Virginia which is now West Virginia, where his grandfather settled in Harrison county, while the grand-uncle went further west, and built the first iron-furnace at Hanging Rock, Lawrence county, Ohio. PRODUCTION of cesium, cesium salts, and rubidium salts in the United States declined somewhat from 1961 levels; rubidium production was virtually unchanged. Imports of pollucite declined because consumption was supplied partially out of inventory. Domestic Production.-About 50 tons of pollucite was reported mined at the Tin Mountain mine in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The Dow Chemical Co., Midland, Mich., MSA Research Corp., Callery, Pa., and Penn Rare Metals, Inc., Revere, Pa., produced a total of 159 pounds of cesium. Rubidium production remained essentially the same as in 1961. Shipments of the two metals by these companies and by American Potash & Chemical Corp., Trona, Calif., totaled 279 pounds. Production of cesium and rubidium salts by American Potash & Chemical Corp., Penn Rare Metals, Inc., and Rocky Mountain Research, Inc., Denver, Colo., declined substantially during 1962.

"Electric furnace smelting is one of the principal unit operations for ferroalloy production, and increased process intensity, improved availability, minimal maintenance and a longer campaign life are common objectives for electric furnace operation in order to obtain favourable economics of production. Furnace designers have continued to develop innovative solutions, e.g., furnace cooling systems, that have allowed these objectives to be realised and CFD modelling plays a key role in the design process. Enhanced understanding of the energy transfer process in the furnace and the ability to develop, evaluate and optimize components of the crucible design to match process requirements are the key motivators for modelling.This paper provides an overview of recent applications of CFD to the design of electric furnaces. The aim is to illustrate what can be done, and identify areas where further work is needed in this field. Examples include furnace bath simulation, crucible cooling system design, taphole design, baking of Soderberg electrodes, off-gas systems, and fume control and building ventilation. It is argued that the trend is for numerical models to become more encompassing while at the same time more accessible, and therefore further improvements in furnace design will be realised with continued and well validated modelling efforts.IntroductionOne of the main processing steps in ferroalloy production is the smelting of ore in electric furnaces. The three-electrode, AC submerged arc furnace is most prevalent method for smelting in the industry, with shielded-arc and DC plasma arc furnaces achieving limited application (1,2). Commercial furnaces range in size from a few megawatts to more than eighty megawatts of supplied power, and operate with the objective of maximising the return on capital invested. Maximising productivity and energy efficiency are two pathways to achieving this objective, through process intensification, increased availability, minimal maintenance, and increased campaign life for the furnace and associated equipment. Concurrently, the need to reduce the environmental impact of metal production by controlling the emission of particulate emissions, greenhouse gases, and other harmful by-products must also be met."

"The zinc-lead deposit of the Lake Geneva Mining Company is on lot 7, con. VI, Hess township, Sudbury district, Ontario, about 10 miles northwest of the northern rim of the Sudbury Basin. Though a relatively small deposit, it shows some rather interesting relations to cross-cutting, pre-ore, quartz diabase dykes, which merit description.The deposit was discovered in October 1924 by J. H. Collins beneath iron-stained drift and oxidized sulphides. This proved to be the northwestern extremity of the orebody, the remainder of which extends southeast below swampy ground. Exploration began in 1927. In 1928 a vertical shaft was sunk to 250 feet and a level established at 235 feet. Later the shaft was deepened to 400 feet and new levels opened at 315 and 375 feet. In 1943 an inclined winze was sunk below the vein from the 315-foot level to a vertical depth of 640 feet, and two additional levels were opened at 525 and 615 feet respectively.The geology of the area has been described by T. T. Quirke (1), F. F. Osborne (2), F. J. Alcock (3), and Ralph Tuck (4). Private reports have also been made by Carl Tolman, J. E. Gill, and K. W. Fritzsche. Tuck's paper, covering the work completed to 1930, gives a detailed account of the character of the ore and enclosing rocks.Up to May 1944, when the property was closed, all ore above the 375-foot level and a small tonnage from below this elevation had been removed. Rare and rare earth metals use quite often is an indicator of national economy development. The world structure of the rare-earth metals manufacturing countries in 2015 was presented as follows: China – 94.2%, India – 2.0%, Russia – 1.8%, the USA – 1.2%, Brazil – 0.5%, Malaysia – 0.3%. In Russia, large reserves of rare-earth metals, which reach nearly 28 million tons, are revealed. Kazakhstan, possessing a raw materials source of rare-earth metals, has all prerequisites for development of branch. Rare metals are manufactured in Kazakhstan incidentally by non-ferrous metals production. The production of indium, thallium, cadmium, selenium, tellurium, bismuth is made at the Ust-Kamenogorsk lead plant; tantalum, beryllium, niobium and molybdenum – at the enterprises of “National Atomic Company Kazatomprom” JSC. Production of a titanium, magnesium and vanadium is adjusted on “Ust-Kamenogorsk Titanium-magnesium Plant” JSC. Capacities for beryllic production yield are available on “Ulba Metallurgical Plant” JSC. The main producer of perrhenic production and osmium-187 is "Zhezkazganredmet" RSE. The single producer of gallium in Kazakhstan is “Aluminium of Kazakhstan” JSC; the capacity of enterprise is 25 t a year. In Kazakhstan innovative technologies for rare and rare earths mineral raw materials processing are created. The technology has been developed and a vacuum distillation apparatus has been created to purify crude selenium, which makes it possible to obtain a metal with a main component content of 99.9-99.99%. Technologies for processing of technogenic wastes and byproducts of the copper industry are developed. Implementation of technologies allow to obtain ammonium perrhenate, perrhenic acid, osmium isotope -187, tribasic lead sulphate, silver-concentrate. The technology of complex processing of black shales of Balasauskandyk deposit with the production of gold, vanadium, rare earth elements, uranium and ferrosilicon has been proposed. The processing was carried out using methods of autoclave leaching, sorption, extraction, precipitation. A highly profitable sorption technology for recovery of rhenium from solutions of underground leaching of uranium ores containing 0.2-0.4 mg/L of Re has been created. The organization of ammonium perrhenate production from solutions of uranium ore will significantly increase the volume of its production in Kazakhstan.

Energy Developments Ltd. (EDL) has developed power plants at two Australian coal mines that featuring 94 gas-fueled Caterpillar G3516 engine/generator sets. They will convert to electricity 145 kt/a (160,000 stpy) of coal-seam methane gas for sale to a local utility. The $100-million project will cut the sites' methane emissions in half, provide a low-cost energy source and offset mine operating costs. The project began in May 1995. It is located at the Appin and Tower longwall underground mines, 80 km (50 miles) south of Sydney in New South Wales. The installation is one of the first to capture coal-seam gas from mine ventilation air and gas drainage systems. Coal- seam gas contains 40% to 60% methane, which fluctuates constantly. The system is expected to convert 578,000 m3/d (20.4 million cu ft/d) of coal-seam gas to 94 MW. It will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 3.5 Mt/a (3.8 million stpy) of CO, equivalent emissions. The Appin and Tower mines each produce 2 Mtla (2.2 million stpy) of clean coking coal. They operate around the clock with about 400 workers per site. The mines are owned by BHP Steel, Collieries Division, which will share the revenues from energy sales. The Appin Power Partnership consists of EDL and Lend Lease Development Corp.

The annual survey of the oven-coke industry by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, described in this report shows that 79 plants were operating in 22 States December 31, 1956. On that date 15,923 serviceable ovens existed, with a maximum total annual coke capacity of 79,965,100 net tons, and 631 new ovens were under construction. Their annual coke capacity was 3,307,300 net tons. The number of serviceable ovens in existence relates only to those capable of producing coke and does not include (1) any ovens that were blanked off or retired permanently in batteries that were operating December 31, 1956, and (2) ovens that had been demolished and were being rebuilt on that date. For this reason, the number of ovens at furnace plants reported by the Bureau of Mines at the end of each calendar year differs from the number reported for the same group by the American Iron & Steel Institute, as the institute includes ovens being rebuilt.

Flotation concentrate originating from the Asarel-Medet porphyry copper mining and processing complex in Bulgaria has been subjected to regrinding using a Ro-Star mill; the effects of which on the downstream metallurgical behaviour are discussed. Particularly the effect on the liberation degree was studied through an optical microscopy and MLA-SEM automated mineralogy. On the other hand, copper selective flotation of the reground bulk concentrate was realised to evaluate the anticipated metallurgical improvement. Process parameters such as involvement of prior hydrocycloning and variation of collector dosage have been evaluated. Within a two-minute residence time inside the Ro-Star mill, an improved liberation degree of the copper bearing minerals has been observed. As a consequence, enhanced copper recovery and selectivity against pyrite was noted. It has been found that in order to guarantee efficient flotation of the resulting ultrafine particles, a modified flotation regime (i.e. changing collector suite and dosages) should be followed. "A pilot test campaign was undertaken to evaluate dense medium cyclone separation efficiencies on samples of iron ore fines (-1mm +300µm). Evaluations were done using both gas and water atomised FeSi types across a range of operating conditions in the presence of slimes build-up. A Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) was used to measure size, density, shape and liberation data of DMS feed and products. The results of the test work were used to obtain parameters for modelling of the partition size/density response. The findings indicated that accurate density characterisation of the feed ore is essential in understanding product quality and recovery, particularly due to the effect of porosity and micro-inclusions. A significant off-set between cyclone underflow density and separation cut-point (D50) was found indicating that relatively low feed media densities (about 3.4g/cm3) are required to achieve high density cutpoints of over 4.0g/cm3. In agreement with CFD modelling, the separation quality is dominated by viscous effects, hence FeSi type and slimes content will need to be carefully controlled to ensure efficient separation.INTRODUCTION In the South African context, future resources of hematite are expected to be both of lower head grade and will contain a higher content of banded iron formation (BIF) (1). These ores may require finer crushing in order to liberate the high-grade fractions and will thus increase the amount of -1mm material to be processed. In order to efficiently upgrade these materials, it becomes necessary to re-examine both traditional and novel processes to treat material finer than 1mm in size. These include spiral and up-current classifiers, wet high intensity magnetic separation processes, Reflux classification and potentially includes dense medium separation (DMS). This study presents a technical evaluation of fines DMS using a mineralogically-based particle tracking analysis method (PTA) to calculate efficiencies of separation."
