Thiourea is a promising reagent for gold extraction especially from refractory ores that cannot be treated by traditional cyanidation route. In this study recovery of gold from thiourea leaching solutions was investigated by direct electrowinning. The electrolysis cell consisted of a carbon flow-through cathode and a lead anode. The anodic and cathodic compartments were separated by a membrane. Galvanostatic mode was chosen for operation of the cell. Factors affecting recovery efficiency such as cathode thickness, linear flowrate, current intensity, thiourea and gold concentrations were investigated. The influence of some species in solution on efficiency and selectivity of recovery was investigated. Gold recovery reached 99% but current efficiency was lower than 10%. The complex formed with ferric ion and formamidine disulfide are reduced before gold-thiourea complex. Thiourea consumption occurred during leaching mainly by oxidation and reaction with dissolved copper.

Refractory gold ores are those from which a significant percentage of the gold cannot be recovered by conventional cyanidation. Historically, roasting has been the primary method for rendering such ores amenable to gold extraction; however, roasting creates environmental problems that are not acceptable in many locations. During the 1980s, consistently strong gold prices drew increasing attention to refractory gold ores, and new processing schemes were commercialized, most prominently aqueous pressure oxidation and more recently bacterial oxidation. Since 1985, pressure oxidation has been incorporated into four plants processing refractory gold ores. A fifth plant is scheduled for start-up in early 1990, and three additional plants are scheduled for production before late 1992. A technical session on treatment of refractory ores was included in the program of `World Gold '89, a Gold Forum on Technology and Practices' held by SME and the AusIMM in Reno, NV, Nov. 5-8, 1989. This article summarizes material from five of the papers presented during the refractory gold session and published in the proceedings of `World Gold '89,' edited by Roshan Bhappu and Rod Harden. In describing accounting methods at Lake Shore Mines, it is the intention of the writer to limit the discussion to the principal features of the system used in securing cost figures and other statistics. The subject can be conveniently treated under the following divisions: (1) Time-keeping and Labour Distribution (2) Supplies: Handling and Distribution (3) Method of Assembling Data for Cost Purposes (4) Details of Operating Costs Time-Keeping and Labour Distribution After a new employee has gone through the routine of being 'hired on', he is assigned an employment number corresponding with the group applying to his occupation. This is for identification purposes in the plant and time office. He is also given an individual serial number, the use of which will be refer-red to later. On entering and leaving the plant, each employee passes through the clock room adjoining the time office, where he registers the time in and out on time recorders, on the clock card (Figure 1) bearing his name and number. It is the duty each morning of the time clerk to extend the hours worked by each employee, as indicated by the clock for the previous day, and at the end of the half-month period the total hours are multiplied by the rate and entered in the space provided for total wages at the bottom of the card.

New approaches that increase hydrometallurgical recovery from refractory minerals in below-mill-cut-off-grade sulfide copper ore can add significant value, improve profitability and increase ore reserves. This paper describes the development and implementation of an engineered heap (EH) approach to leaching low-grade, chalcopyrite-bearing ore at Freeport-McMoRan?s mine in Morenci, Arizona. The technical evolution of the engineered heap concept is described together with the challenges and benefits following implementation.

The objective of Contract J0295041 was to determine if the addition of a surfactant (wetting agent) to the water used for dust control in underground coal mines results in the reduction of airborne dust. Laboratory wettability tests, including the capillary rise test, a coal dust sinking test and zeta potential measurements, were used to select a coal seam/surfactant combination for in-mine testing. Four surfactants were selected for underground testing: Surfynol 465, Aerosol MA-80, DC-13, and Dustallay. The underground tests in the Lower Kittanning seam, Indiana County, PA, involved a Wilcox Mark 20 auger mining system, equipped with spray nozzles located on the cutting augers, Conflow venturi sprays, and a spray manifold. Respirable dust samples were provided by MSA Model G personal samplers and Simslin II instantaneous dust monitor; total airborne dust samples were provided by MSA Model G samplers with UNICO filter cassettes. Based on data obtained from 24 test periods surfactants, as compared to plain water, reduced the airborne respirable dust an average of 27 percent and total airborne dust an average of 36 percent.

Sedimentation behaviour of siliceous mill tailings derived from a magnetite-chalcopyrite ore in fresh water, fresh water - sea water mixtures and full-salinity sea waters are compared. Results of batch settling tests are presented in the form of settling curves and solids flux curves. The addition of a few per cent of sea water markedly enhanced the zone sedimentation rate due to particle agglomeration caused by a reduction in zeta potential of the suspended solids. The presence of a small amount of residual, previously magnetized magnetite in the tailings also enhanced agglomeration and sedimentation. The significance of these results to submarine disposal of mill tailings is discussed.

NO important changes in metallurgical practice are exhibited in the smelter that has been erected for treating the Morenci concentrate: the material is charged to reverberatory furnaces without roasting, and the matte subsequently blown in Peirce-Smith converters to separate the iron and sulphur from the copper. In fact the process is essentially the same, except for preliminary roasting of the concentrate, that was adopted in the new smelter that was built for the Arizona Copper Co. at Clifton, a few miles away, to treat Morenci concentrate just before the start of the first World War, and which went into service in October, 1913.

"THE GOLD MINING REGION of Timmins - Val d'Or, astride the Ontario-Quebec border, has long suffered the effects of rising costs during the period when the U.S. price of gold was fixed at $35 per ounce. The federal government, through such assistance programs as that set up under the Emergency Gold Mining Assistance Act (E.G.M.A. ) in 1948, has subsidized the gold mining communities of Canada for a total of over $300 million to March 31, 1972. Of this, the Timmins - Val d'Or ""gold belt"" has received more than twothirds, almost $220 million. In spite of these continuous subsidies, only 12 gold mines are still producing in the Timmins - Val d'Or belt, whereas 71 mines have received subsidies for some period since 1948. The vital question is how the communities previously supported principally by the mining of gold will survive in the long run, as many of the older mines either are already depleted or are quickly becoming so. With the rising price of gold on the 'free market in recent months, prospects look a little brighter for the time being. Even with the increased official price of U.S. $38, which made the maximum government subsidized price about $48 per ounce, gold mines have not sold any gold to the government since January 1972 and some stopped doing so months before that. The populace of the region has not been enthusiastic about relocation nor about extensive retraining programs in the past and probably will not be in the future. So, when the remaining gold mines become depleted, the old problems of community depression will remain."

"High tirerim loading on haul trucks operating on rough ground frequently manifests as mechanical separations and rim base cracking caused by cyclic fatigue. This paper provides an understanding of the impact of high loads on rim component life and tire footprint, bulge, and deformation behaviour; and develops a maintenance planning tool to predict strain implications of high g loading for a given rim location. Loading tests and analyses were conducted for a tirerim arrangement under increasing load and internal tire pressure. For example, for many years oil sand mining operations have expressed qualitative beliefs that an impact load of the magnitude experienced by a rim and tire arrangement is not detrimental to a rim as a stiff component; however, mining equipment components are subjected to cyclic loading where failure can result from repeated load/unload activity, truncating the peak region of a stress–strain response and resulting in fatigue failure at a stress value that is less than the peak value. The outcome reported by oil sand haul truck maintenance groups indicates they have realized that most high g impacts—such as those experienced by hauler tires and rims operating on poor ground conditions—can result in failure due to cyclic loading, where higher loads require fewer cycles for failure. This high-level loading and the resulting strain transmitted to the rim is evident in the results of the laboratory testing presented in this paper."

Single crystals of Ta-Re alloys have been deformed in tension and compression as a function of solute concentration and temperature. The temperature dependence of the yield stress is decreased by alloying. At low temperatures there is a minimum in the yield stress (at about 2 at. pct) as a function of concentration. Three-stage hardening was not observed in the alloys. Linear hardening rates, where observed, were characteristic of stage II in pure tantalum. At low temperatures and high concentrations, work softening was often prominent at high strains. Electron microscopy revealed that dislocations are mostly of screw orientation, although heavily jogged and cusped, and often occurring in dipole pairs. The alloys become more prone to cleavage with increasing rhenium content, due mostly to an increasing yield stress rather than a change in cleavage strength. Alloying apparently decreases the Peierls stress of bcc metals at low temperatures by facilitating kink nucleation at solule atoms on screw dislocations. Higher solute concentrations further increase the yield stress. Quantitative calculations and comparisons with other bcc alloy systems are made to show that the predominant hardening mechanism is due to the interaction of dislocations with misfitting solute atoms close to their slip planes. The interaction is so localized that the core dilatation of dislocations could be important. CONSIDERABLE interest has arisen in recent years concerning the mechanical properties of unalloyed bcc metal single crystals.'-7 These and similar studies on polycrystalline materials have resulted in a considerable understanding of the macroscopic yielding characteristics8, 9 and the process of work hardening.'' This latter advance is due in a large part to the increased use of transmission electron microscopy in P I RAFFO junior Membar AlMF is Metallyureist Iewis such studies and the general observance of three stages of work hardening in the shear stress-shear strain curves. The properties of substitutional alloy single crystals of bcc metals have not been determined in as much detail as in the pure metals. Insufficient systematic studies have been made on the effect of alloying on the magnitude and temperature dependence of the yield stress or the stress-strain curves. The alloy systems which have been studied to some extent have been Ta-W,11, 12 Ta-Mo," Ta-Nb,12'14 Mo-Re,15 W-Re,16 and alloys of iron with nickel,17 platinum,17 vanadium,18 and aluminum.18 A large body of data exists on Fe-Si alloys, but these have mainly been a result of the experimental convenience of using this material in place of unalloyed iron, rather than a comprehensive study of the mechanical properties of the alloy system per se. The present authors have previously reported additional data on the properties of Ta-Re, Ta-W, and Ta-Mo alloy single crystals.1g Some of the data on Ta-Re alloys will be described later in this paper. Briefly, single crystals of Ta-Re (1.2 to 10.6 pct), Ta-W (6.2 and 10.2 pct), and Ta-Mo (2.9 and 9.0 pct) were grown by the floating zone method in vacuum. Compression tests were performed in the temperature range 77" to 623°K. Slip was found to occur in Ta-Re alloys at 77' and 298°K on the (~ll)[lil] system and slip lines were coarser and straighter than in unalloyed tantalum. No three-stage hardening was observed in any of the alloy systems and the curves were nearly parabolic. At temperatures above 175°K the yield stress* increased monotonically with in- creasing composition while at 77" and 175°K the yield stress initially passed through a minimum after which it began to increase again for concentrations greater than about 2 pct Re. Similar minima were observed in Ta-Mo alloys and to a lesser extent in Ta-W alloys. The minimum was interpreted as being a result of a

"The paper describes the CDN$400 million expansion at Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited’s operations. The company has continuously produced copper and zinc at the Flin Flon metallurgical plant since 1930. The paper details the company’s operational turnaround since 1995 and “The 777 Project” which includes two new mines, expansion and modification of the concentrators, expansion of the zinc pressure leach plant, a new zinc electrolytic cellhouse and modifications to the copper smelter gas handling system to reduce ground level gas emissions. IntroductionHudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited (HBMS) was incorporated in 1927 to mine and process the world-class Flin Flon copper and zinc orebody. Ore concentration and metallurgical facilities were constructed in Flin Flon. The metallurgical complex capability is currently 89 000 tonnes of copper metal and 98 000 tonnes of zinc metal from both HBMS and purchased concentrates.Flin Flon, with a population of 7000, is in Manitoba and partly in the province of Saskatchewan. The location is isolated with Winnipeg 800 km to the south and Saskatoon 500 km southwest.Today, three underground mines feed the Flin Flon concentrator, one feeds the Ruttan concentrator at Leaf Rapids, 200 km to the north of Flin Flon, and Chisel North mine feeds the Snow Lake concentrator (Fig. 1).The Flin Flon volcanic massive sulphide proximal and distal orebodies are within the Flin Flon greenstone belt which stretches from the west of Flin Flon to the east of Snow Lake, a distance of 250 km. The belt is approximately 100 km wide before disappearing below the paleozoic cover to the south."

Exploration for ore deposits in southeastern Missouri in the 1950's resulted in the important discovery of lead, zinc, copper and silver in 1955. Further discoveries in the area led to the naming of the Viburnum trend. It has sometimes been referred to as the "New Lead belt" to distinguish it from older lead-producing areas to the east. As presently developed, the "trend" is 35 miles long, running north and south about 50 miles west of the Lead belt. Galena (lead) is the principal ore mined, with lesser quantities of sphalerite (zinc), chalcopyrite (copper) and silver recovered as economic by-products. The ore body is as much as 140 feet thick and 1,200 feet wide, and is found in the Bonneterre Dolomite (Upper Cambrian) at depths ranging from 700 to 1,200 feet. Since its discovery many companies have engaged in exploration and several major companies have developed new mines and constructed mills and a smelter in the area. The first mine in the Viburnum trend came on stream in 1960, but as more mines came on stream and others reached capacity, lead production increased to the point that the Southeast Missouri Lead district produced 432,576 tons of lead in 1970 to become the world's largest lead-producing region (Missouri Geological Survey and Water Resources, 1971). The Viburnum trend area with its rolling, heavily forested hills and numerous clear running streams is in the Clark National Forest of the Missouri Ozarks. Until the recent development of its mineral resources, the area was sparsely populated and nearly unmarked by the activities of man. Although overall worker productivity for U.S. underground coal mines is available, productivity by mining method and seam thickness is not. Mining technology has gone through dramatic changes in the past decade, and the industry has experienced a lack of accurate productivity Figures addressing these changes. This information is of great interest in planning for future mining systems as thick and shallow coal seams currently being mined are depleted and exploitation of thinner, deeper, and better quality seams is considered to partially meet the requirements of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments. In a cooperative program, the U.S. Bureau of Mines obtained raw mine level production and related data from U.S. Energy Information Administration for 1989 and 1990 and performed the needed statistical analysis. Base criteria, parameters, and salient results of the mine productivity analysis are presented in this report.

INTRODUCTION The transportation of men, supplies, and mined material from an underground operation is the connecting link between the mine plant and the surface plant. Unless the mine is accessed by a drift or adit, some form of hoisting system is necessary for slopes or shafts. This chapter will deal with the selection of wire ropes and hoists, two of the most important consider¬ations when designing a hoisting system for an under¬ground mine. WIRE ROPES General A wire rope is designed to transmit forces longitudi¬nally along its axis. Wire rope is used in a variety of mining applications because of its flexibility, high ten¬sile strength, and dependability. Shaft hoisting ropes and principal slope haulage ropes are usually custom-¬built; however, proper rope selection for slushers, car spotters, etc. should not be overlooked. Wire ropes for shafts and slopes, since they represent the life line for the mines, should be of the very highest quality improved plow steel. This quality is necessary to deal with the conditions of loading, winding, vibration, abrasion, and corrosion. Tables I and 2 display the specifications for the typical wire ropes used for mine haulage applications. The 6 x 19-class haulage rope is used for most hoisting where abrasion is not critical. On the other hand, where abrasion is critical, such as a slope application, 6 X 7-class haulage ropes are preferred. For other mining applications, manufactur¬ers' handbooks should be consulted. Selection The selection of a wire rope for a mining situation consists of simply applying appropriate safety factors to a calculated maximum rope pull and comparing the result to the listed breaking strength of the rope under consideration. Table 3 can be used for determin¬ing the minimum factors of safety for wire ropes. To determine the maximum rope pull, the following quantities must be known: the rope weight in pounds (x), the conveyance weight in pounds (y), and the weight in pounds of the load in the conveyance (z). These values are used to calculate the load due to gravity, the load due to conveyance friction, and the load due to rope friction. When these loads are added together, as shown in Eq. 1, the maximum (static) rope pull (RPS) can be derived:

Extensive literature exists on the motion of single bubbles and the behaviour of swarms of bubbles. This contribution describes work to track and reveal the motion of individual bubbles in a swarm. The technique is based on high speed cinematography and tracking of multiple moving objects. Image processing algorithms were implemented in Matlab to isolate and measure geometric proper-ties of the bubbles in image sequences recorded at 2 ms interval; and these properties were compiled into a data structure. To track a bubble, the geometric properties and a matching criterion were applied on consecutive pictures to identify the bubble. The bubble trajectory was reconstructed from the data structure for the matched objects. The methodology is briefly described. The new technique was tested for bubbles produced at slot-type spargers (i.e., approximately 2-D swarms) in the presence of two frother types ('strong' and 'weak'). Two observations are discussed: a) that bubble motion in a swarm describes a velocity-size relationship dictated by the dominant bubble size class; and b) that surfactant type influences bubble rise velocity for bubbles in the range 0.1 mm to 4 mm. The latter suggests surface viscosity rather than surface immobilization determines bubble rise velocity.

The Tuesday morning session opened at 9:00 a.m. and was presided over by John Peperakis, Manager Sunnyside Mines, Kaiser Steel Corporation, Sunnyside, Utah. It consisted of a Round Table. The first speaker was Mr. G. A. Bennewitz, Market Director - Fuels - Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad, Denver, Colorado. Subject - "Transportation." Mr. Gary Bennewitz has been a Market Director of the Rio Grande R.R. since February 1968. He joined the D&RGW in 1966. Mr. Bennewitz has a degree in Civil Engineering from The Cooper Union in New York City. Following graduation, he spent two years working with a consulting soil engineer. He then went to work for the New York Central R.R. as a Structural Engineer and Transportation Economist. He also had a year's stint at the Port of New York Authority before moving to Denver. His paper today deals with some of tile economic factors inherent in the development of an efficient, economic unit train system. His experience in this vein includes trains operating from the Sunnyside Mines, of Kaiser Steel, the coal delivery system to Geneva Works of U. S. Steel, and from the facility of Mid-Continent Coal & Coke Co. at Carbondale, Colo.

The Pu-In phase diagram has been determined by thevmal, filtvation, micrographic, and X-ray diffraction methods. This alloy system is characterized by 1) limited solubility of indium (-2 at. pet) in 6 and e plutonium, 2) one eutectic, and 3) fizte intermediate phases. Of the latter, PuIn and PuIn3 melt con-gruently, and Pu31n, Pu31n5, and the high-temperatuve 7 solid solution are formed peritectically. The n phase decomposes eutectoidally into Pu3In and PuIn at 865°C. Although the 6 phase can readily be retained to room temperature, it is not thermo-dynamically stable below 300°C. The Pu-In system has been investigated at Los Alamos as part of a study of the alloys of plutonium with the group 111-B elements. Constitutional studies of the Pu-A1 and Pu-Ga systems have been reported earlier.'9' To date, published information on the constitution of Pu-In alloys covers only the identification of the intermediate phases Pu3In and PuIn3.3,4 EXPERIMENTAL The alloys were prepared from five different lots of plutonium and three different lots of indium. The principal impurities in the plutonium differed from lot to lot within the following limits (in ppm): iron, 30 to 80; nickel, 30 to 60; aluminum, 15 to 30; silicon, 20 to 145: thorium, 50 to 300; carbon, 75 to 335; and oxygen, 20 to 135. Spectroanalysis of the indium showed that two of the lots were 99.9 wt pct pure, and the third was 99.98 wt pct pure. The alloys, in the form of about 5-g buttons, were prepared by arc melting in conventional equipment. The components for each alloy were weighed to the nearest 0.1 mg. In most instances the weight losses during melting were negligible; therefore confirmatory chemical analyses were usually not made. A few results are given in Table I. Density measurements of the arc-cast buttons were made by the liquid displacement of bromoben-zene. Heat treating was done in muffle furnaces controlled to +2°C. The alloy buttons were wrapped in tantalum foil before being enclosed in evacuated clear silica capsules. As a precaution against breakage, each capsule was in turn placed in a silica tube closed with a refractory wool plug prior to being charged into the furnace. For a moderately fast quench of the alloys, the outer protection tubes containing the capsules were plunged into cold water. Differential thermal analyses (DTA) in racuo were performed at heating and cooling rates of about 1.5°C per min. Tantalum crucibles having inverted thermocouple wells were used for most of the analyses. It was found micrographically, however, that the liquid alloys containing more than about 35 at. pct In reacted with the tantalum, resulting in contamination of the surface of the alloy. A search for a more satisfactory crucible material was not successful: tungsten and yttria behaved comparably to tantalum; thoria, vitrified magnesia, and vitrified alumina severely contaminated the alloys. Mathematical solutions to complex mine ventilation problems are possible, but often the airway network is so complex that the mathematical solution becomes tedious and impractical. A fluid network analyzer, designed and built for analyzing mine ventilation problems has been in service at the Bureau of Mines' Pittsburgh station for approximately nine years. Using this analogue as a model, the mine ventilation network is simulated electrically by a combination of series and parallel circruits laid out to conform with actual mine airways. A tungsten filament lamp, referred to as a Fluistor, is used to simulate mine airway resistance. With the analogue ventilation model established, voltages of the proper amplitude to represent ventilating pressures are impressed across the circuit at points where mine fans and airshafts are located. Comparison of mathematical solutions of complex systems against analogue results showed a maximum variance of 3% for pressures and 2% for quantities. An electrical fluid network analyzer, designed and built especially for analyzing mine ventilation distribution problems, has been in service at the Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh, for approximately nine years. It is a nonlinear, low voltage, fluid network analyzer of the type developed by the late Malcolm S. McIlroy, Professor of Electrical Engineering, Cornell University, who cooperated with G. E. McElroy, of the Bureau of Mines, in adapting the instrument to mine ventilation systems. Several modifications have been made since the original installation, but a considerable part of this paper is drawn from G. E. McElroy's original description of the analogue.' The analysis of water or gas distribution systems2,3 led to the development of this type of network analyzer. Several similar units are now employed by utility companies for this purpose; however, the Bureau of Mines unit is the only one designed specifically for mine airflow problems. Other airflow analogues employing a similar principle have been used at the Central Research Station of the Netherlands State Mines,4 in England,5 and in South Africa.6 Information on these devices indicated they were somewhat inflexible because commercial lamps with a sufficient range of resistance are difficult to obtain. Computers for mine ventilation analysis have been developed in Germany which instead of lamps use a variable resistance to adjust for turbulent flow laws. These units are expensive, but excellent results have been reported in their application. THE ANALYZER Theory of Application: As airflow generally follows the law of turbulent fluid flow, resistance to flow is nonlinear; consequently, the problem has been to find a nonlinear resistance element of suitable range that can be used for electrically simulated airflow. Tungsten filament lamps operated on alternating or direct current approximate the square-law resistance characteristics of mine airflow over a large range below maximum or rated voltage; that is, the voltage drop varies approximately as the square of the current. Consequently, the heart of the network analyzer is a nonlinear resistor known as a Fluistor, which is simply a custom-made low voltage, tungsten filament lamp that is available in a progressive series of relative resistance values ranging from 0.05 to 500 in nominal 5% steps. However, variations in manufacturing large groups result in differences of 1 to 3%, but series arrangements required for high-loss branches can be matched within about 1%. Utilizing a combination of Fluistors and load circuits, the mine ventilation system is duplicated electrically. Intake load circuits are connected from power intake to primary points of the circuit network; segments of unregulated flow along intakes and returns are represented by Fluistors, regulated splits and leakage paths are represented by load circuits and Fluistors of proper capacity; and mine exhausts are connected to ground from the last point of the network to complete the circuit. For the special purpose of representing booster fans or natural draft conditions, boosters or separate source circuits are provided that can be inserted between any two points of a network to increase voltage to the required value. An experimental investigation has been made to study the effects of tooth angle and confining pressure on the force required for indentation of dry rock samples under confining pressure. In these experiments static single-tooth indentations were made on two standstones, a limestone, a schist and a slate under confining pressures of 5,000 to 15,000 psi. Sharp wedge-shaped teeth with included angles ranging from 30°to 105°were used. In all cases the force-displarenzent curves are approxinlately linear for rocks tested under confining pressure, as contrmted with the discontinuous curves obtained for silnilar rocks at atmospheric conditions. Photonzicrographs of thin sections through the craters indicate very little evidence of chip formation during indentation. In general the experimental data lie between calculated values for perfectly rough and perfectly smooth tooth-rock interfaces. INTRODUCTION The variables associated with ctrilling at depth are numerous and, in many instances, are not easity isolated and controlled. Also, many of these variables are interdependent; however, if the variables which are sufficiently independent of each other are held constant and are appropriately introduced, the dependent variables can be more easily studied and evaluated. It is the purpose of the present investigation to study experimentally the simplest case of bit tooth-rock interaction. In essence, the experiments have involved the static loading of sharp wedge-shaped tools on the surfaces of effectively semi-infinite dry rock samples subjected to confining pressures. During this investigation the following quantities have been maintained constant: 1. Pore pressure: atmospheric (i.e., the rock is dry). 2. permeability: although the rocks may be permeable, they are "jacketed" in such a manner that the fluid is not permitted to flow through them. 3. Temperature: 75F. 4. Rate of loading: essentially static (approximately 0.002 in./second). 5. Bit tooth: a sharp wedge-shaped tooth loaded normal to the rock surface. 6. Rock surface: smooth and flat. 7. Drilling fluid: hydraulic oil. In addition to the above conditions, the rock surface was free of a layer of cuttings. There was no indexing to previously indented surfaces, and the influence of corners of the borehole was neglected because the rock samples were effectively semi-infinite. The following quantities have been varied, and the resulting effects have been studied: 1. Rock a) Type (e.g., limestone, sandstone, etc.). b) Mechanical properties ) Necessarily dependent c) Porosity on type of rock. 2. Bit tooth (included angle of wedge-shaped tooth). 3. Depth of penetration. 4. cobfining pressure. On the basis of laboratory experiments which have shown that many rocks exhibit ductile behavior at confining pressures corresponding to depths usually reached during drilling,'.' a theory has previously been advanced which predicts the force required for penetration by a single sharp wedge tooth into a ductile* material.' The material is assumed to be isotropic, homogeneous and rigidly plastic (no elastic deformation) and to obey the Coubomb yield criterion (Figs. 1 and 2). Equations governing the force required for penelration are given for two extreme cases:** 1.
