Discussion of the Paper of Dr. H. M. Chance, presented at the Lake Superior Meeting, September, 1904. EDWARD HALSE, Puerto Berrio, Colombia, So. Amer. (communication to the Secretary*) : The Taviche mining-district is generally known as a Taviches," being named from the two villages called respectively San Pedro Taviche and San Jeronimo Taviche. It is so called by José G. Aguilera, in his paper on the Geographical and Geological Distribution of the Mineral Deposits of Mexico;' and in published reports by the late N. W. Rudston Read ;2 and by Juan de Dios Villarello.3 The region is a large one, measuring about 24 miles long and 7 miles wide. Dr. Chance, in his interesting paper, tells us very little about the nature of the ores, and, with regard to the geology of the district, contents himself with observing that ? the country, as a rule, consists of eruptive rocks; and no evidences of sedimentary strata appear near the mines.? The latter part of the above statement is hardly correct. The formation is mainly eruptive, being hornblende-audesite of Tertiary age, which is limited on the east by the calcareous (Cretaceous) formation, and on the west by the Huronian rocks of Ocotlan. Limestone is seen close to the Santa Càtarina mine, at the northern end of the region. In the surface-working known as La Cueva, a little northeast of San Pedro, limestone forms the eastern wall of the deposit which consists of spots (moscas) of pyrargyrite in white opaque or transparent quartz. This report describes open, sublevel, and shrinkage stoping at the Greenwood mine, operated by Inland Steel-Co. The iron ore mine is in Marquette County, Mich., about 6 miles southwest of Ishpeming (fig. 1). The Greenwood is one of three active underground hard-ore mines on the Marquette range, the others being the Cliffs-Shaft and the Champion mines. The operation reflects an achievement in exploiting small, difficult-to-mine hard-ore bodies lying beneath a 200-foot overburden of glacial drift, which is partly water bearing. This report can indicate only briefly the efforts of personnel in overcoming adverse conditions in mining more than 2 million tons of ore, 80 percent of which was in lump form, for open-hearth production of steel. Significant data presented include descriptions of the principal mining methods employed, sublevel and shrinkage stoping; percent aged mining costs for the entire year 1957, covering both direct mining costs and general expenses; and performance records in units of labor, power, and supplies.

Your assessment of the minerals business. The global mining industry is strong. I am convinced it will continue meeting the mineral needs of the world population for the foreseeable future. Two developments have greatly enhanced the industry’s ability to produce low-cost minerals. Technological innovations have resulted in increased productivity. And there has also been a dramatic expansion of the number of favorable countries in which to explore and mine. Capital expenditures have flowed to the low-production-cost mines and development projects as well as to the exploration projects and stable countries having the best potential for valuable mineral discoveries.

This report has been prepared in response to a request by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Fairbanks Alaska District Office that the Bureau of Mines quantitatively assess the potential supply of minerals from undiscovered deposits in the White Mountains National Recreation Area (WMNRA) and the western part of the North Steese National Conservation Area (SNCA) in Alaska. The assessment will be used to assist in future land-use decision-making. Resource Management Plans (RMPs) for the WMNRA and the SNCA were approved by the BLM in 1986. These plans imposed significant restrictions on new mineral development in the two areas. The level of public concern regarding these actions, especially on the part of the mining industry, has spurred BLM to seek additional information about the potential supply of minerals from the two areas with assistance from the Bureau of Mines. The assessment focuses on an area within the WMNRA and the SNCA which has been administratively closed to mineral entry. The study area encompassed approximately 1.24 million acres and included all of the WMNRA and the western portion of the North SNCA (fig. ES-1). Three quantitative estimates of the potential supply of minerals from the study area were developed: 1) For all lands in the study area, assuming that they are open to mineral entry-the baseline analysis; 2) For those lands which have been closed to mineral entry; and 3) For eleven prospective mineral activity areas, assuming that all are open to mineral entry.

Water sprays are a common method used to reduce particulate matter (PM) emissions. Various factors such as wettability, surface area coverage, fine particle engulfment rates, interparticle adhesion forces, suppressant penetration and suppressant longevity have all been suggested as critical factors in achieving effective PM control. However, it has not been established which of these factors are the most important. Experimental work indicated that suppressant penetration is the most critical of these factors. The length of time after application that suppressants were effective was also improved by using hygroscopic reagents that retained moisture to prevent evaporation. Maximizing suppressant penetration and improving suppressant longevity led to an average 86% reduction in PM10 concentrations in laboratory dust tower tests.

This paper discusses the computerisation of the drill hole database, some historical records and the creation of a three-dimensional model of the gold bearing structures for resource estimation and mine design at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine in northern Tasmania. The phase of the work reported here commenced in November 1997 and was completed in March 1998. The historical mining on the Tasmania Reef had reached a depth of 450 m below surface when work ceased in 1914. Production up to this time was 854 000 ounces gold. Recent activity has concentrated on testing depth extensions of the previously mined ore structure, to a depth of 1000 m below surface, and the establishment of an underground mining operation to exploit this resource. The lode structure at Beaconsfield is a typical mesothermal vein style deposit. Gold is contained within narrow quartz, carbonate and minor sulphide reefs or veins. Reef width is variable from a few centimetres to several metres with æsplitsÆ or bifurcations being common. The reef averages 2.7 m true width in the economic zones. The key feature of this style of mineralisation is that reef continuity can be confirmed by drilling to a high level of confidence, but the gold grades are somewhat more erratic in nature. The resource estimates were based entirely on drill data. The drill intercepts on the reef were coded for each split directly into a database and these allocations validated graphically. The distribution of grades and widths show an increasing gold grade with reef width for both the drill hole and historical data. The same histogram patterns, mixed populations and overall arithmetic average grade for the historical mine (at 21.52 g/t > 3 g/t Au) and new drill data (at 21.55 g/t > 3 g/t Au) would indicate that there has been no major change in the overall style or grade of the ore from the historically mined areas to the new resource. The reef, host geology, area of historical workings and resource zones at the Beaconsfield Mine were defined as a series of closed wireframes. The Tasmania Reef was modelled as five mutually exclusive wireframes, one each for the Main Reef, Footwall split, Second footwall split, Third footwall split and Hangingwall split. The data for this exercise was extracted directly from the drill hole database, stored in Microsoft Access format. The formation of the solids was largely automated with manual validation and refinements allowing for multiple runs using different interpolation methods and combinations of drill holes. A rotated 3D-block model in the plane of the Tasmania Reef was created to contain the grade model and allow for tonnage, grade and reef width estimates. An inverse distance squared (ID2) interpolation method was used with ranges of 25 m along strike and 125 m down plunge with blank areas infilled with 50 m by 250 m. Each reef split was filled separately using only drill intercepts from that split. The method was independently validated used MIK methods. Longitudinal sections have been prepared showing gold grade, reef width and width +grade. Estimates were also made for arsenic, sulphur and other minor elements. The long sections show three distinct mining zones. A method is presented for the conversion of the resources to reserves by the addition of mining parameters for minimum mining width, minimum pillar, cut-off grade and internal and external dilution. The selection is done on columns within the block model, and allows for all splits to be considered at once. Multiple runs can be made for varying combinations of parameters to test different mining methods and their impact on reserves, mine life and NPV.

Twin tunnels were constructed to a length of 863m using TBM in one of the underground metro projects. The tunnels pass through complex geological conditions (soil, rock and mixed conditions). This paper presents the consideration of volume loss and the corresponding ground settlement associated with the excavation of twin TBM tunnels by analytical and numerical methods. Empirical methods were used to calculate the ground settlement induced by the excavation of twin tunnels. The ground settlement values were directly derived from the two parameters: the volume loss and trough width parameter. These parameters are calculated based on the geological conditions at the tunnel face and tunnel overburden. The finite element software, Plaxis 2D was used to model the soil parameters with appropriate geological conditions. Twin tunnel excavation is simulated in Plaxis 2D and the effect of tunnelling on the ground was simulated by percentage volume loss. The suitable line contraction value was applied to the tunnel linings to simulate the volume loss. The surface ground settlement was directly obtained from Plaxis 2D. Instrumentation arrays were proposed along the twin tunnel alignment, to provide the ground settlement monitoring data within the influence zone of tunnelling activities. The derived ground settlement values from analytical and numerical methods were compared with the actual field instrumentation and monitoring data. From the field instrumentation data, the actual volume loss values were calculated. The compatibility of ground settlement and volume loss calculated using analytical and numerical methods and those measured using field instrumentation data is discussed in this paper.

Roadheaders are commonly used in coal mines for roadway excavations. The prediction of roadheader performance is necessary for the planning of roadway projects and the estimation of costs. Recently, a new rock mass cuttability classification (RMCC) system has been introduced for roadheaders used in coal mines. In this study, the validity of the RMCC system was investigated for different types of roadheaders and different coal mines. Four different coal mines were visited, and the performance measurements of different axial and transverse roadheaders were carried out during the excavation of roadways. Uniaxial compressive strength, volumetric joint count, the strike and dip of joints, joint aperture, the Cerchar abrasivity index, and water ingress were determined in field and laboratory studies to calculate the RMCC index. The analysis of the data demonstrated that the correlation coefficients between the net cutting rates and the RMCC indices were higher than 0.94, suggesting that the RMCC system was valid. It was concluded that the RMCC system could be reliably used for the evaluation of roadheader performance in coal mines.

Next to the paper industry, the steel industry is a major user of water. Without an adequate and reliable source of “good” water, steel cannot be produced. The use of water has a direct impact on steel quality and on our environment. Used improperly, water can also add unnecessary costs. Used properly, water can maintain and improve steel quality, enhance our environment and control or reduce the “total cost of operation”. Water needs to be more than just “wet and not lumpy”. Water quality needs to be based on the end use. This paper discusses ways to manage many of the water systems. With little or no capital investment it is possible to develop operating practices that protect your initial investment, ensure that the water systems do not have a negative impact on quality or your production costs and also minimize your chance of having an environmental incident.

The Rasmussen Ridge phosphate mine is owned by Agrium CPO and operated by a unit of Washington Group International. The mine, located in southeastern Idaho, received the Idaho Inter-Agency Reclamation Award from the Idaho Department of Lands. The phosphate mine, located northeast of Soda Springs, was honored for “Excellence in Ongoing Operations, Soft Rock Mines over 75Acres.” Charles Ross is Agrium CPO’s plant manager. He said, “We are honored to receive this award. This recognizes the commitment and dedication of our employees toward the protection of the environment. I am really proud of the people that work at the mine.”

Based on the investigation by the Bureau of Mines, tungsten is the principal metal found in the study area; gold and silver were the primary metals found at one property. Tungsten occurs in tactite zones formed near contacts of calcareous metasedimentary with granitic intrusive rock. Gold and silver were found primarily along quartz veins in granitic rocks; small amounts of those petals also occur in the tactite zones. Since 1856 approximately 200 lode claims or relocations have been recorded, mainly in the southwest corner of the study area. Tungsten production in this part of the area has been inure than 7,800 short ton units (70,800 kg) of tungsten concentrates; about 4,800 short ton units (43,500 kg) were from the Mud Lakes Mine; and 3,100 short ton units (27,200 kg) were from the Rainbow Mine 1/.

Many states rely upon the Pennsylvania 1957 “Gas Well Pillar Study” to evaluate the coal barrier surrounding gas wells (Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, 1957). The study included 77 gas well failure cases that occurred in the Pittsburgh and Freeport coal seams over a 25-year span. At the time, coal was mined using the room-and-pillar mining method with full or partial pillar recovery, and square or rectangle pillars surrounding the gas wells were left to protect the wells. The study provided guidelines for pillar sizes under different overburden depths up to 700 ft. The 1957 study has also been used to determine gas well pillar sizes in longwall mines since longwall mining began in the 1970s. The original study was developed for room-and-pillar mining and could be applied to gas wells in longwall chain pillars under shallow cover. However, under deep cover, severe deformations in gas wells have occurred in longwall chain pillars. Presently, with a better understanding of coal pillar mechanics, new insight into subsidence movements induced by retreat mining, and advances in numerical modeling, it has become both critically important and feasible to evaluate the adequacy of the 1957 study for longwall gas well pillars. In this paper, the data from the 1957 study is analyzed from a new perspective by considering various factors, including overburden depth, failure location, failure time, pillar safety factor (SF), and floor pressure. The pillar SF and floor pressure are calculated by considering abutment pressure induced by full pillar recovery. A statistical analysis is performed to find correlations between various factors and helps identify the most significant factors for the stability of gas wells influenced by retreat mining. Through analyzing the data from the 1957 study, the guidelines for gas well pillars in the 1957 study are evaluated for their adequacy for room-and-pillar mining and their applicability to longwall mining. Numerical modeling is used to model the stability of gas wells by quantifying the mining-induced stresses in gas well casings. Results of this study indicate that the guidelines in the 1957 study may be appropriate for pillars protecting conventional gas wells in both room-and-pillar mining and longwall mining under overburden depths up to 700 ft but may not be sufficient for protective pillars under deep cover. The current evaluation of the 1957 study provides not only insights about potential gas well failures caused by retreat mining but also implications for what critical considerations should be considered to protect gas wells in longwall mining.

In underground operations, where copper, gold and other metals are mined, the open stopes can be backfilled to stabilise surrounding workings. This fill may consist of tailings from the processing plant, usually mixed in slurry with a binder such as ordinary Portland cement (OPC). Extensive use is made of tailings in OPC-based paste fill, cemented hydraulic fill or cemented aggregate fill applications. A large underground operation such as the Mount Isa Copper Operations utilises over three million tonnes of backfill per annum. Geopolymers offer an alternative binder system with significant environmental advantages over OPC. Geopolymers are formed by polymerisation of aluminosilicate precursors in an alkali medium. They generally form products with superior strength characteristics as well as increased resistance to degradation, particularly under acidic conditions. Geopolymers have lower carbon dioxide emissions associated with their manufacture than OPC and offer further potential advantages, such as the use of less water and more waste materials. The application of geopolymers to weak material systems such as mine backfill has not been widely studied. The aims of this investigation were to assess a range of Australian mine process wastes for suitability as feedstocks in fill applications and to construct a range of these cemented minefills using a geopolymer binder. The physicochemical characteristics of each of the wastes are discussed as well as how they ultimately contribute to the geopolymer cement through direct replacement of OPC. Results from various tests on the candidate geopolymer fill formulations are presented and the potential of such fill formulations to replace OPC in mine backfilling operations is highlighted. The significant potential contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the use of geopolymer-based mine backfill across the industry is noted. Conversion of a single mine, such as the Mount Isa Copper Operations, is shown to match the reductions in greenhouse gas emissions due to the current total installed photovoltaic electricity generation capacity of Australia. A similar examination of wastes available to a gold mine could potentially yield new binders for use in established or new fill systems.

Blasthole sampling practices were investigated at the Erdenet copper and molybdenum mine in Mongolia to address grade reconciliation issues. The goal of the study was to determine if the particle size distribution (PSD) of blasthole cuttings was accurately reflected in the samples. The study additionally examined if the measured grade was related to the particle size of samples. Using a sector sampler specifically designed to collect samples for the study, six large samples were collected from three blocks following a specialized protocol. Each sample was split into nine size fractions, ranging from larger than 12 mm to smaller than 63 µm. Copper and molybdenum grades were determined for each of the size fractions. For comparison, nine samples were collected from the same blocks following the standard mine sampling protocol. These samples were also split into the same nine size fractions. As with the other samples, grades were determined for each of the size fractions. The results showed that the PSD in the samples collected following the standard operating procedure varied significantly from sample to sample. This variation was much lower for the samples collected following the specialized protocol. Loss of fines was also indicated in the standard mine sampling process. These observations suggest that the standard sampling protocol did not consistently capture the PSD. The copper and molybdenum grades increased as particle size decreased, regardless of the sampling protocol used. This observation underscores the importance of the PSD of a sample being representative of the true PSD. Given the low number of samples in the study, it is not a strong conclusion that the standard sampling protocol captures the PSD inconsistently. However, it could be taken as a caution. On the other hand, the grade versus PSD relationship is more certain, given that it was observed regardless of the sampling method used.

The work is being done using the Thermo-CalcTM software, and the database is being built up by obtaining good thermodynamic descriptions of all of the possible phases in the system. The database supplied did not cover all of the phases, and these had to be gleaned from literature, or modelled using experimental data. Similarly, not all of the experimental data were known, and where there were gaps or inconsistencies, experiments had to be undertaken. A preliminary version of the database was constructed from assessed thermodynamic data-sets for the binary systems only. The binary descriptions were combined allowing extrapolation into the ternary systems, and experimental phase equilibrium data were compared with calculated results. Very good agreement was obtained for the Pt-Al-Ru and Pt-Cr-Ru systems, which was encouraging and confirmed that the higher-order systems could be calculated from the binary systems with confidence. Since some of the phase models in databases were different, these phases had to be remodelled. However, more work is ongoing for information concerning the ternary phases present in the Al-Cr-Ru, Pt-Al-Ru (two ternary compounds in each) and Pt-Al-Cr (possibly more than three ternary compounds) systems. At later stage of the work, problems with the thermodynamic descriptions of the Cr-Ru and Pt-Cr binary systems were found. A programme of experimental work to overcome these has been devised, and is being undertaken. Keywords: Pt-based alloys, phase diagram calculations.

Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are emerging as viable replacements for incandescent-based cap lamps used in mining. The photometric and energy characteristics of these light sources differ in important ways. The present paper describes the performance of LED and incandescent sources in cap lamps in terms of correlated color temperature, color rendering, light output, electric power, ambient temperature and airflow, and light source aging. Importantly, these characteristics can influence a miner?s ability to spot mining hazards thus impacting safety. Secondly, some of these characteristics interact with the operating life of the cap lamp?s battery power, such that differences between LED and incandescent sources can be magnified toward the end of a 10­hour battery discharge cycle. Empirically, we have determined that after 8 hours at an ambient temperature of 25 °C, the average light output of an incandescent cap lamp can decrease to about 69% of its initial value when powered by a lead-acid battery and it can decrease to about 65% of its initial value when powered by a nickel-hydride battery. An LED-based cap lamp using a constant current drive circuit can maintain about 96% of its initial value when powered by a nickel-hydride battery. Real-world tests addressing the effects of ambient temperature and airflow on the light output of an LED and incandescent cap lamp were conducted in the NIOSH Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM). The LED cap lamp yielded a vertical average illuminance improvement of approximately 9.5% and the INC cap lamp yielded a vertical average illuminance degradation o f approximately 4%. The differences between LED and incandescent cap lamps were further quantified by the calculation of ?mesopic luminance? data that indicated for the same photopic luminance (i.e., as measured using a conventional light meter) the LED cap lamp could be up to 38 % more efficient than the incandescent cap lamp with a lead-acid battery at the end of the 10-hour driving cycle. Lastly, accelerated life tests were used to empirically determine light output depreciation as the incandescent light source age approached its useful life. There was about a 35% decrease in light output. This is quite considerable, especially given that the light output will decrease an additional 30% to 45% over the period of a 10-hour shift. The implications of the differences between LED and incandescent sources are discussed. This information is crucial in determining how visual performance could be affected for real-world conditions where batteries discharge during the work shift and as the light source ages. To date, only idealized conditions have been used for LED and incandescent cap lamp visual performance research.

Developing a laboratory procedure for the determination of coal-seam compressive strength has been a subject of discussion for many decades, and the reliability of laboratory determinations is often the subject of debate. A coal seam’s characteristics, the method of sample collection, the specimen preparation method and the testing procedure can often result in drastic variations in the test results. In this paper, the development of a laboratory testing procedure for the determination of coal-seam compressive strength is presented. Two samples that were collected from different coal seams were tested in this study. First, the inherent characteristics, i.e., coal structure. Hardgrove grindability index (HGI), Slake durability index, proximate analysis and mechanical properties (Young's modules and Poisson's ratio), of each coal were determined. The results were used to categorize the coal scams in terms of the characteristics liable to produce variable strength data in typical laboratory tests. Second, two commonly used laboratory specimen shapes, cylindrical and cubical, were tested to determine which shape produced the most reproducible strength values. Third, four loading rates within the static testing range, i.e., 0.007, 0.07, 0.34 and 0.7 MPa/s (1.0, 10, 50 and 100 psi/sec), were used to determine the ideal loading rate. Finally, the number of test samples required to produce strength data within the acceptable standard deviation, considering coal seam characteristics, were established. Background Laboratory testing of coal specimens for the determination of seam compressive strength has been a subject of discussion since the early 1900s. Many researchers have tested coal specimens to estimate coal-seam compressive strength for use in pillar design to insure the safe operation of [ ] mines (Unrug et al., 1986; and Hirt et al.. 1992). Yet, there is a lack of a universal procedure, and, no matter which approach is used, it becomes the subject of intensive debate. A great deal of work has been performed on the subject, and there is much information available in the literature. Some of this work concerns quantifying the influence of specimen shape and size on compressive strength (Bieniawski. 1968: Barron et al.. 1992: Khair and Xu 1994; and Khair 1994). As indicted in the literature, coal is a heterogeneous material, consisting of discontinuities such as cleats and bedding planes, which are likely to produce variable strength results (Holland, 1964; Unrug et al., 1986). Professional sport venue construction follows a very simple rule. Once the decision has been made to move the team to a new place, construction shall begin immediately, so that not more than one or two seasons pass by stuck in the old home. Such tight construction schedules require a different approach than traditional design-bid-build contracts. Design is mostly done on the fly, the construction schedule becomes a main risk factor and an early contractor involvement is desired. As specialty contractors become more and more sophisticated, owners, their construction managers or the general contractor have realized the value of ideas and modern technology they can bring to the table for a successful and fast project completion. Local knowledge and experience in a variety of solutions play a key role in the specialty contractor’s ability to provide added value to the project. This is also true for the specialty foundation contractor, who needs to understand the complexity of such modern structures from its integrate foundation, over the delicate concrete structure to a potentially fancy movable stadium roof. Not to mention all the modern high tech equipment which shall make such a place a great customer experience. His expertise shall enable him to propose the most suitable foundation element for the given ground condition and application. Rather to build what others have designed, his strength is to propose alternate concepts which will be faster and (hopefully) more cost effective. This paper highlights different value engineering (VE) input a specialty foundation contractor had on 3 major sports arena projects in California. Together with the entire team from owner to GC, including the Geotechnical (GEOR) and the Structural Engineer of Record (SEOR), the most efficient and best performing foundation solution can be found every time. ONE hundred and eighty-three A.I.M.E. members, W. S. Morris with an excellent technical program, John Suman, "oil" President of the Institute, and a Texas norther blew into Dallas for the fall meeting of the Petroleum Division at the Adolphus Hotel, Oct. 16-18. and the most successful result will give future meeting committees a high mark to equal. People were still talking of the terrific heat the week before and it was quite noticeable that with the lowered temperatures, the members were in fine fettle for the technical sessions.
