"Cyclones are one of the most extensively used pieces of equipment within the mineral processing industry because of their simplistic operating and maintenance philosophies. They are commonly used as classifiers within the comminution circuit to control the grinding product particle size for satisfactory performance of downstream operations.Cyclones are a key contributor to the effective operation of the plant and have a significant impact on the mineral processing plant operations. If the cyclones are not performing as they should, the results are often a combination of lost recovery, grade, capacity and reduced throughput. Similarly, an inefficient cyclone operation may also lead to low or high recirculating loads that impact the efficiency of the comminution circuit. This highlights the importance of having proper stability in cyclone operation while implementing any plant-wide optimization strategy.One of the key challenges in cyclone operation is that cyclones are highly sensitive to changes in operating conditions and are affected by process fluctuations such as feed pressure, solids concentration and flow rates. Fluctuations in cyclone feed characteristics lead to unstable cyclone performance which affects mineral liberation. For such an impactful unit operation, cyclones have historically been under-instrumented in an otherwise highly instrumented process plant. Traditionally, mill operators have relied on visual observations of the apex discharge to determine the operating state of the cyclones. Visual cues corresponding to the different cyclone operating conditions have been discussed by Neesse et al. (2004) as shown in Fig. 1."

"Hydraulic transportation of solids in suspension with water or other carriers, such as oil is becoming more practical as economic situations develop with respect to the railroads and other carriers. Of significant importance, is also the increased size of the major operations and the total impact of larg- er tonnages and more critical sources of supply.There are several means of imparting energy into the solids and directing the material down a pipeline, but the centrifugal pump is emerging as the most practical piece of equipment when considering relatively large flows and recent development. We can now handle relatively high densities without interruptions. This provides the mining and transportation fields a more economical means of lifting and transporting coal and other mineral products.Equipment & MethodsWarman International has developed several methods of alternate PDP against high heads. We have, at least for the present time, shelved our pump which uses clear water to slurry method and have placed our major emphasis on the full development of the centrifugal pump. I personally see several similarities on the alternate reciprocating devices as compared with the steam piston type engine versus steam turbines. The centrifugal pump comes into its most advantageous position at about 2000 GPM and can also show advantages by means of increased mobility, when driving tunnels and in other difficult operations when considering the total economic results. We now have some interesting d<:ta on one 5 mile raw silica sand line designed for pumping at 200-400 tons per h:mr. This is a separate subject on a ""simplified approach to slurry transport"" and paper has been prepared for the Hydrotransport 5 proceedings in Germany this Spring. Reference 1 may be of interest to those who want to delve into the subject further, and I also have some advance copies of this paper."

The installation in 1948 of a Humphrey spiral concentrator section at the Hill-Trumbull plant of The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. is the latest commercial method on the Mesabi Range being used for the recovery of fine iron ore. In two stages of concentration 84 spirals treat approximately 120 long tons per hour of minus 1/8 in. ore. These spirals augment the production of the heavy-density plant which recovers the plus 44 in. iron from the plant crude ore. Structure of the ore is such that, when crushed, about 50 pct of the plant crude is minus 1/8 in. size. After desliming in a 66 in. Akins classifier, grinding the classifier product in a ball mill and again desliming in a 78 in. Akins classifier about 15 pct of the crude ore remains to be treated in the spiral plant.

Self-diffusion in pure crystalline solids has been described through extension of the Cohen and Tum-hull volume -fluctuation model originally proposed for diffusion in simple liquids. It is shown, for a number of crystalline solids, that the self-diffusion coefficient, D, obeys the relationship where a is the lattice spacing, v the Debye frequency, Z&apos; the lattice-volume fluctuation per atom required for a diffusion jump, and (?V/Vo) the relative increase in the lattice volume resulting from thermal expansion between O°K and the temperature under consideration. The calculated value of Z&apos; is dependent upon the difiusion mechanism and the lattice geometry. ThE need for an increased understanding of mass-transport processes in crystalline solids has resulted in much research to determine rates of self-diffusion.&apos; For several metals (e.g., copper, silver, and iron), the experimental values of the self-diffusion coefficient, D, have been determined over a large interval of temperature and the accuracy of D has been investigated through repeated experiments. Also, a number of empirical and theoretical diffusion studies have established a rational basis for understanding the D values for the different elements.2"6 The empirical diffusion analysis by Sherby and simnad6 supplied the main stimulus for the present study. Sherby and Simnad, reviewing the self-diffusion data for a substantial number of pure crystalline solids, suggested that sufficient data were available to establish with some certainty the apparent intrinsic material properties which influence D. Without explicit regard for any mechanism of diffusion, these investigators obtained an empirical relationship for D which correlated the self- diffusion coefficient for each element with the melting temperature, crystal structure, and valence of the particular element. Their analysis is only unsatisfactory in that the effect on D of crystal structure is not very clear and the valence to be assigned to an element is not always straightforward. The present study is an attempt, from a very different viewpoint from that of Sherby and Simnad, to establish a basis for understanding the self-diffusion coefficients for crystalline solids. This analysis was undertaken for the purpose of developing a general expression for D which would explicitly depend on the mechanism of diffusion. The main result of the study is that diffusion in crystalline solids may be described in terms of a volume-fluctuation model which was originally proposed by Cohen and Turnbull7 to describe diffusion in simple liquids. The model appears to be useful for predicting self-diffusion coefficients in crystals. The following sections describe the volume-fluctuation model for diffusion, the application of this model to crystals, and the resultant agreement with experimental data. 1) THE VOLUME-FLUCTUATION MODEL FOR DIFFUSION Cohen and Turnbull7&apos;8 developed their model for liquid self-diffusivity for the purpose of describing certain properties of liquids, glasses, and the liquid-glass transition. A hard-sphere model for the liquid structure is used. In this model, the size of a spherical molecule or atom is fixed for all temperatures by the interatomic spacing at the absolute zero of temperature. At any temperature above O°K, the atom is viewed as being contained within a larger spherical cage defined by the interatomic spacing of the atoms at that temperature. A random distribution of varying cage sizes is assumed to exist in the liquid. An individual diffusion jump occurs when the free volume of an atom (the volume of the cage containing the atom minus the volume of the atom) is large enough for the atom to jump out of its cage. The height of tailings pond (TP) embankments is frequently raised to accommodate the ever-increasing volume of tailings released by the mining industries. Excess pore water pressure (EPWP) may develop during the height-raising operations, which can affect the overall stability of TP. This article presents a detailed stability analysis for the embankments of an existing TP, the height of which was increased twice utilizing downstream (D/S) and upstream (U/S) construction techniques. A rigorous two-dimensional transient fully coupled-stress-pore pressure analysis is performed in the finite element-based package RS2 to examine the build-up of EPWP during different stages of construction. Furthermore, an attempt is made to investigate the feasibility of future height raising, with due consideration given to the influence of embankment raising rates. Results from the analysis show a development of higher EPWP within the tailings deposit in comparison to the embankments of TP, indicating the development of an undrained-like condition. The study further reveals that the development of EPWP is highly affected by the rate at which embankments of TP are being raised. A higher rate of embankment-raising results in the development of greater EPWP in comparison to a lower embankment-raising rate, which may lead to the ultimate collapse of TP. Furthermore, based on the stability analysis, the height of existing TP can be further raised by 4 m (two lifts of 2 m height) utilizing the U/S construction technique. A thorough cost and benefit analyses are however required before implementing the results of the current analysis since the storage capacity of TP is reduced while raising by the U/S method.

This paper describes the research and development programme to develop a prototype underground auger mining system aimed at developing and demonstrating an underground auger mining system able to provide economic access to thinner (<1.8 m) coal reserves of South Africa. Data concerning the performance of modern coal augers under South African coal mining conditions were gained from a proven surface auger which operated across a range of coal types. These data were analysed and considered in conjunction with historical information regarding previous attempts at building underground augers dating back to the 1950s. Drawing on these data a prototype underground auger mining system, the BryDet BUA 600 underground coal recovery auger, was designed and manufactured by the BryDet Development Corporation in collaboration with Eskom and Cutting Edge Technology Pty Ltd with support from Anglo Coal and the Ingwe Coal Corporation Ltd. The prototype BryDet BUA 600 underground coal recovery auger commenced trials in March 2000 at the Matla Mine near Witbank in South Africa. The initial trials were undertaken in an open cut to facilitate the commissioning and training associated with a prototype mining machine. A total of 30 holes was augered in the box cut before the machine moved underground. The prototype BUA 600 first achieved the target penetration depth of 80 m in its third hole. The prototype BUA 600 is a new underground mining system which has passed early testing with ?flying colours? and could provide access to extensive underground coal reserves unmineable by conventional mining techniques both in South Africa and elsewhere around the world.

At the beginning of this year it was my pleasure and responsibility to take over the Presidency of our Institute from Mr A. A. Parish who, as did his predecessors, filled the office with distinction. It is a great privilege to address you as President and it is an occasion for my wife and family, and I am most grateful for your inviting them to the buffet dinner. LongWangGou coalmine auxiliary inclined shaft heading face has a large section, fast heading speed, and large dust production. The problems of high concentration and wide distribution of dust in the roadway air are very prominent. To improve the efficiency of roadway ventilation and dustremoval, long-compression and short-suction (after this referred to as LCSS) are adopted. The dust concentration and airflow field distribution in the roadway are numerically simulated by FLUENT. The change of the position between the pressure duct and the exhaust duct and the different pressure-extraction ratios affect the distribution of airflow velocity, the formation of vortex zone, and the distribution of dust concentration in the roadway. When Ly = 25 m, Lc = 5.0 m, W = 1.2, a wind curtain is formed at 5 m in front of the heading face to prevent dust from spreading deeper into the roadway.

Gold rush histories are usually written as though they were unique events in the development of a region or nation. While this is a valid way of looking at gold rushes, it is not the only way. This paper is a brief attempt to relate the West Coast rushes to a wider context. During the second half of the nineteenth century the lure of gold transformed the Pacific Rim. Gold rushes drew more than half a million Europeans and Americans to lands bordering the Pacific. By 1900 a chain of mining, industrial and urban centres ran from California to Alaska; from Ballarat to New Guinea, and on to Western Australia. The New Zealand rushes were a significant chapter in this story. People, cargo and information passed from rush to rush. Techniques learned on earlier goldfields were imported; those developed in New Zealand were, in turn, taken up elsewhere. Administrative systems and regulations developed in Australia were implemented in New Zealand, improved and passed on to Canada. This interconnectedness was so strong that gold-seekers thought of the mining regions as a distinct culture, &apos;the whole digging world&apos;. Much can be made of the similarities shared by rushes. But comparison can also highlight the individuality of each rush. +The early days of the West Coast rushes were perhaps the strongest assertion of a diggers&apos; culture. A brief period in which a remarkable orderliness was created through mateship, self-regulation, and the occasional threat of rough justice. The West Coast rushes were both a unique experience and an integral part of a process which transformed the Pacific Rim during the nineteenth century. Understanding their part in that bigger story highlights just how unique they were.

The rapid development of the global alumina and aluminum industry is straight coupled with the demands and the needs of these materials. Nowadays, the only well-known accessible resources to produce alumina and aluminum are bauxite ores. But bauxite ores are limited, and the remaining exploitable reserves do not have high contents in alumina. In countries where there is little or no bauxite reserves or where the recovery of existing bauxite ores to produce alumina with the Bayer process are not economic, alternative resources for alumina have been explored. The most attractive resources for replacing bauxites are aluminosilicate clay minerals and coal fly ash. The important processes developed for the recovery of alumina from these sources are acid leaching and alkaline leaching processes. The acid leaching is known as the most efficient in which thermal and mechanical activation are included for improving the performance of the process. The objective of this review is to give a comprehensive insight on the production of the alumina from thermally or mechanically activated clays and coal fly ash by hydrochloric, sulfuric, and nitric acid leaching processes.

THE progress of metallurgical practice and the demands made by the engineering industry on our foundries and mills have made the crystalline structure of metals a subject of far more than academic interest. Metals and alloys are made up of crystals. Even if we accept the view, so ably maintained by some metallurgists, that the crystals are separated from one another by an amorphous layer, it remains true that all but a very minute fraction of any metallic mass is crystalline. The conditions which affect the growth of crystals are therefore of importance in metallurgy. It is not only castings whose properties depend on the arrangement of their crystals, for the more we learn of the behavior of forged, rolled and drawn metals, the more certain it becomes that it is profoundly influenced by the size and arrangement of the crystals in the original ingot, deter- mining a structure which may persist in a modified form through a long series of mechanical operations and annealings. This is mainly due to the concentration of much of the impurities in the last portions of the liquid to freeze, so that the boundaries between single crystals or groups of crystals are marked out by a zone of segregated material, differing in properties from the mass, and offering a barrier to diffusion and equalization of composition throughout the whole. The importance of this fact has been fully recognized by steel manufacturers, who have to deal with ingots which are sometimes very large, and are cast at a high temperature, containing impurities which have a marked effect on the properties even when present in very small quantity. For this reason the Iron and Steel Institute has set up a committee to examine the whole question of the heterogeneity of steel ingots,(l)f and a report has been issued, containing an account of the structure of 16 ingots, ranging in weight from 15 cwt. to 172 tons, each of which was sectioned and examined by chemical analysis and by etching. A valuable body of data concerning segregation has thus been collected. A computer program has been written to simulate ground vibrations induced by multiple-hole surface blasts. The program is an inexpensive and relatively easy to use tool for predicting the principal blast vibration characteristics that determine damage and annoyance potential: peak particle velocity, frequency content and pulse duration. The program generates a complete ground motion history by superposing, at any surface position, the vibrations induced by each individual explosives charge. It requires specification of (hence allows accounting for) the blast geometry, initiation sequence (including random delays), position with respect to blast, pulse characteristics induced by each charge, and propagation laws. A methodology is outlined to determine the necessary variables either on the basis of site investigations (e.g. velocity, attenuation, pulse), or by backcalculation from measured blast vibration records. The latter procedure has been applied to blasts from two coal strip mines. Main difficulties are backcalculating individual pulses, propagation (especially dispersion) parameters and delays. A normal distribution of delays, based on published results, has been shown to influence the results and the response of a single degree of freedom structure significantly. Broadening of the wave types included and additional verifications with field results are required.

The refinery at Kermanshah was commissioned in September, 1935, with a rated throughput capacity of 75,000 tons a year of topped crude to meet local requirements. Crude production from the Masjid-i-Sulaiman and Haft Kel fields is tabulated below: Masjid-i-Sulaiman Field.—The flowing lives of wells have been extended by (I) a process of acid treatment, thereby reducing the bottom-hole pressure differentials, and (2) by reducing the back-pressure. Optimum producing conditions for individual wells have been determined as a result of an experimental study of the amount of available energy in the reservoir crude and of energy losses in flowing wells. The return of surplus products to the reservoir has continued to be a satisfactory economic operation and the crude throughput capacity of the topping plant has been increased. The viscosity of residue returned to the reservoir is reduced before injection by regassing at 35 lb. per sq. in. absorption pressure with surplus gas. The pressure in the gas dome is falling at the low rate of one pound per annum. Haft Kel Field.—The delimitation of the main structure has proceeded; the oil-bearing area so far proved being about 50 square miles.

H. H. Hill.—I believe that as petroleum engineers you are all more or less interested in geophysical prospecting. A large number of the papers that have been written on that subject are too detailed or too much involved to be of much value to a person who is not familiar with the subject, so I suggested to Mr. Fohs that he might bring us something that we could all understand. As I take it, we are interested in learning something about the different methods, the places where they have been used, their limitations and in general whether they have given satisfaction in locating oil deposits. Y.—I will briefly summarize some of the results as I Bee them from my practical contacts with them and my discussion of the subject with some of the more important rnen both in this country and Europe. Geophysical Methods 1. Seismographs: A. 1. Sonic refracting seismographs of Karcher, McCullom and Reiber. For rapid reconnaissance and also for detail—perhaps, the best type of instrument. 2. Mechanical refracting seismographs of the Weichert-Mintrop type. B. I. Sonic seismographs using reflected sound from contacts of sufficiently unlike beds where latter are thick enough, being used for detail of both salt domes and ordinary structures where a good reflecting key bed occurs. 2. Torsion Balances: Made in three sizes with greater portability and loss of but 20 per cent. in medium size and loss of 40 per cent. efficiency in smallest size. A. Used to best advantage in detailing salt domes, in noting anomalies of deep-seated structures of the Edgerly, La., type (but not always certain here and dependent on interpretation which involves both experience and the human equation to a large degree). R. Used to advantage in mapping faults where a lime or other denser bed occurs upthrown, and the topographic irregularities are not too involved. C. Of use where buried granite plugs and buried-hill structures occur as in the Western Texas fields. D. Believed of little use for other types of structure. 3. Magnetometers or Variometers: Now built horizontal and vertical with declinometer combined in one instrument. A. Practical in mapping granite or basic igneous rock plugs and intrusions, or of detritus therefrom. Adams has recently demonstrated definite results in mapping the well known Panhandle arch.

How the Australasian and Canadian Codes (VALMIN and CIMVal) approach mineral property valuation is described. Brief comment is also made on the International Valuation Standards CommitteeÆs interest in a global valuation standard for Mineral (Extractive) Industries and the South African SAMREC initiatives to adopt a VALMIN-like Code. The conventional tripartite classification of valuation approaches into those that are Market-based, Income-based and Cost-based is outlined. It is best practice to use as many of these approaches as possible (and as many methods as reasonable in the particular circumstances), given the quantity and quality of the data available on the Mineral Asset (which depends upon the state of development of the mineral property). The use of specific methods must satisfy the basic considerations of logic and reasonableness and the purpose of the valuation. The competence, judgement and repute of the valuer are critical factors, since all valuations are time and circumstance specific. What constitutes æMarket ValueÆ in the different jurisdictions is discussed and definitions are given. Challenges facing the globalisation of a VALMIN-type Code for the international Minerals Industry are the influence of real estate valuers and the US jurisdictional idiosyncrasies. This is mainly due to a fixation on real property rights with a preference for using real estate-like comparative sales techniques (Market Approach) to the exclusion of Income-based approaches; a regulatory reluctance in the US to accept that Resources have considerable value; and the International Accounting Standards BoardÆs preference for Historical, rather than Current Value, accounting.

The report states accident rates for gassy/dusty coal mines represented as an ergatic system "man – machine - environment" with further analysis by the method of conditional probabilities. A coal mine has been analyzed with allowance for the attending personnel, equipment and environment as a sequence of events and states. Probabilities of operational states have been determined and prediction of mine behavior has been made on the basis of investigation findings for equipment and the personnel states, and analysis of the environment (i.e. mine and mining conditions). Utilization of expert estimation methods has been considered for determining major operational parameters of gassy/dusty mines. The importance of standardized values of permissible occupational risks (permissible probability of accident, PA) is demonstrated. It is also stated that a procedure is essential to determine these values, involving regular check-ups of the integral safety criterion at all mines and further development of customized recommendations for individual mines on efficient improvement of accident situations. Methodology to determine the assessment criteria has been developed and scientifically substantiated for permissible accident rates in hazardous industries.

The sandstone-type uranium deposits of the Gas Hills occur in the arkosic, lower Eocene Wind River formation on the southern edge of the Wind River Basin. The d S34 values of pyrite cement associated with uranium mineralization are-significantly lighter than values for syngenetic-diagenetic pyrite nodules, therefore the H2S responsible for the precipitation of the epigenetic pyrite and uraninite was produced [t]epigenetically. These values are much lighter than the values of H2S from neighboring oil fields. The presence of biogenic pyrite in meta-igneous Precambrian cobbles indicates that these cobbles are not remnants of former; vein-type uranium deposits.
