Recent studies suggest that trace metals emitted by internal combustion engines are derived mainly from combustion of lubrication oil. This hypothesis was examined by investigation of the formation of particulate matter emitted from an internal combustion engine in the absence of fuel-derived soot. Emissions from a modified CAT 3304 diesel engine fueled with hydrogen gas were characterized. The role of organic carbon and metals from lubrication oil on particle formation was investigated under selected engine conditions. The engine produced exhaust aerosol with log normal-size distributions and particle concentrations between 105 and 101 cm-3 with geometric mean diameters from 18 to 31 nm. The particles contained organic carbon, little or no elemental carbon, and a much larger percentage of metals than particles from diesel engines. The maximum total carbon emission rate was estimated at 1.08 g h-1, which is much lower than the emission rate of the original diesel engine. There was also evidence that less volatile elements, such as iron, self-nucleated to form nanoparticles, some of which survive the coagulation process.

Chromite, the only ore of chromium, occurs almost exclusively in mafic-ultramafic rocks and their weathering products. However, not all kinds of mafic-ultramafic rocks are favorable hosts for possible low-grade chromite deposits. For instance, chromium-bearing basalts are not favorable because they commonly contain < 0.3% Cr2O3, and chromite is almost always less than 50 um in diameter, if it is present at all. Chromite-bearing ultramafic rocks in stratifonn and alpine complexes tend to be either ore grade (> 25% Cr203) or very low grade (< 2% Cr203); intermediate rocks are scarce. In most complexes large tonnages exist only in the < 2% Cr2O3 group and the composition of the chromite is commonly unsuitable for metallurgical use. Some nickel laterite districts contain more than 108 tons of material with 2.0% to 5.5% Cr2O3, and hence, chromium could be a byproduct of nickel in some laterite districts.

At present, the plants, adopting single magnetic separation process to realize cleaning and removing Si and lowering impurities, are in the minority. Most magnetite plants adopt the flotation separation process to remove Si, lower impurities and purify the concentrate. Though with stable indexes and high Fe recovery rate, the flotation process is very complicated, high-cost and with lots of environmental pollution. If adopting the weak magnetic separation equipment can realize removing Si, lowering impurities and the final cleaning, the magnetic separation process should be the primary choice."

Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar o comportamento mecânico, através da dureza HV, medida por um ultramicrodurômetro instrumentado, desejando encontrar uma maior homogeneidade microestrutural bem como o seu refino.

The Andacollo gold mine is located near the small town of Andacollo, Chile (population 14,000) in the fourth region. It is approximately 35 miles by paved road from the coastal city of La Serena, and Santiago lies about 300 miles to the south (see map.) Site elevation varies between 3300 feet and 4200 feet. The climate at the site is moderate but arid, with an average annual rainfall of only five inches. Because there is little rain, and the temperature varies only a few degrees (57"F to 75°F); there are no freezing, solution dilution, or pad saturation problems. The climatic conditions are ideal for heap leaching.

The removal of hydrophobic coatings of flotation collectors from iron ores becomes of interest when a duplex flotation process is considered for upgrading, when a pelletizing process is considered for a concentrate floated with a fatty acid or a soap collector, or when a disposal of froth products from cationic silica flotation is of environmental concern. Ozone can oxidize organic compounds rapidly, thereby removing the hydrophobic coatings of flotation collectors. Ozone is widely used for treating and purifying drinking water, waste water treatment, and for chemicals processing (Murphy and Orr, 1975; Rice et al., 1980). Its uses in metallurgical operations, however, are very sparse (Allegrini et al., 1970; Chernobrov and Rozinoyer, 1975; Ishii et al., 1970; Iwasaki and Malicsi, 1985; Matsubara et al., 1978). Yet, its high reactivity and the absence of potentially hazardous byproducts become of interest in destroying flotation reagents adsorbed on mineral surfaces or remaining in mill water for recycle or for discharge. Duplex Flotation A duplex flotation process, as applied to oxidized iron ores, would involve a fatty acid flotation of iron minerals followed by an amine flotation of the siliceous gangue from the rougher iron concentrate. Such a process has been used in the Florida phosphate fields. Fatty acid coatings cannot be removed as readily with a simple acid or alkali treatment from iron oxide surfaces as from Florida phosphates. A combination of reagents, such as lime and quebracho, lime and alkali phosphate, or sulfuric acid and oxalic acid, has therefore been proposed. In a previous article (Iwasaki et al., 1967) , the use of activated carbon was found to be effective in removing fatty acid coatings both in the duplex flotation and the pelletizing processes. The use of ozone offers another approach to the removal of fatty acid coatings from iron oxide surfaces. To investigate the possible application of the duplex flotation process, a specularite ore from Michigan analyzing 36.5% iron was used. A 600-g (1.3-1b) sample was ground in a laboratory rod mill together with 250 g/t (0.5 lb per st) of sodium silicate to -150 µm (-100 mesh). This was transferred to a Fagergren laboratory flotation cell, and deslimed four times at 20 µm (quartz equivalent). The deslimed pulp was transferred to a laboratory conditioner, diluted to 40% solids, and conditioned with 250 g/t (0.5 lb per st) of soda ash and 250 g/t (0.5 lb per st) of oleic acid. The conditioned pulp was then transferred back to the Fagergren cell, floated until barren of froth, and the rougher froth product was returned to the cell and cleaned. The results are presented in Table 1. The cleaner concentrate at this point analyzed 45.3% Fe. The cleaner concentrate coated with fatty acid was transferred to a 2-L (0.53-gal) beaker. While the pulp was agitated with a glass T-stirrer, ozone was bubbled into the agitated pulp for 15 minutes at a rate of 10 mg/min (0.00035 oz per min) ozone (250 g/t or 0.5 lb per st 03 feed). It was observed that the pulp ceased to froth after about 10 minutes. The amine flotation of siliceous gangue from the ozonated pulp was carried out first by conditioning with a dextrin, a commonly used starch depressant for iron oxides. This was followed by flotation with a stage addition of an ether amine at increments of 100 g/t (0.2 lb per st). Three stages were required to float the siliceous gangue to near completion. The three froth products were combined and cleaned twice. When the cationic flotation Rougher, Cleaner 1 and Cleaner 2 cell products were combined, an iron concentrate analyzing 64.5% iron was obtained at an overall iron recovery of 72.8%. Pelletizing Fatty acid flotation concentrates have been pelletized successfully in northern Michigan mills. But at other locations, fatty acid coatings on iron flotation concentrates proved so undesirable in agglomeration that other methods of concentration had to be sought. For example, a sinter mix containing iron ore concentrates upgraded by fatty acid flotation resulted in decreased productivity. This occurred because the micropellets of particles with the hydrophobic coating are less tolerant of moisture. Thus, the bed permeability is lost (Beebe, 1965). The agglomeration of concentrates obtained by the fatty acid flotation alone, and the hydrophobic coatings destroyed by ozonation or by the duplex flotation process, is not expected to cause any difficulty since the surfaces of the concentrates would be hydrophilic. Removal of the fatty acid coating with activated carbon, indicated by the loss of floatability, was shown to restore the decrepitation temperature of wet balls during drying cycle (Iwasaki et al., 1967). Disposal of Cationic Silica Flotation Froths Recent demands of iron blast furnaces place the silica content of the magnetic taconite pellets at about 5%. Conventional process for magnetic taconite involving fine grinding and magnetic separation often produces magnetic concentrates analyzing in excess of 5% silica. This is due to the presence of the middling grains of siliceous gangue and magnetite. Cationic silica flotation of magnetic taconite concentrates (DeVaney, 1949) may be used to reduce the silica content. But the amine coating on siliceous gangue becomes of environmental concern when the flotation tailings are discarded in tailing ponds.

This study investigates the mode of occurrence of uranium in a copper concentrate from the Prominent Hill mine. Mineralogical and liberation studies of a high grade Cu concentrate (monthly composite) containing uranium (U) were undertaken using QEM-Scan in combination with QXRD and ICP-MS. The study aimed at determining in what form U was recovered, and by which mechanisms. The deportment of U was studied in 3 size fractions; +20µm, -20+8µm and -8µm. QEM-Scan analysis showed that uranium was present as U(Cu)-silicates, U-silicates, UPbOx/FeOx or traces of UThOx and UTiOx, with the U-silicates present across the size fractions. The association of uranium bearing minerals with copper sulphides varied across the size ranges. Interestingly, most of the U (46% by weight) was distributed in the finest fraction (-8µm), in which the deportment of Cu was low (6%). Over 40% of the U mineralisation in the -8µm was liberated. In terms of the floatation response, while recovery of the uranium minerals as a result of their association with copper sulphides (as composite particles) was evident, recovery of UPbOx locked in hydrophilic haematite in the +20µm size fraction suggests, that other mechanisms (e.g. Inadvertent activation by Pb from radioactive U decay) are possible. Furthermore, the high amount of fine liberated U bearing particles in the concentrate points at entrainment as another major mechanism for uranium recovery, and therefore, a target for process optimisation.

In the Coast Mountains approximately 110 miles north of Vancouver, the gold mine of Bralorne- Pioneer Mines Ltd. lies at an elevation of 3500 ft. The deepest or 41 level in the mine is at an elevation of 1400 ft below sea level, and the rock temperature on this level is 122.5°F. The thermal gradient is 1 "F increase in temperature for each 67.5 ft increase in depth. The mine produces between 500 and 600 tons per clay, utilizing an adit two internal shafts, and one service shaft from surface. The Queen shaft, extending from the 26 to the 41 level, IS the deepest, and most production now comes from this area. Stoping in by cut and fill using mill tailing hydraulic backfill.

The obligation is not always fulfilled because of the hope that no occasion will ever arise requiring the use of such facilities, and, as time passes without the need for using them, a false sense of security is born in the belief that ""it can't happen here.""The disastrous fire in a mine in Ohio on July 5, 1944, again focused attention on the importance of escapeways in averting disasters and made it clear that one or more dependable exits must be provided from a mine and parts thereof where men might be trapped by being cut off from the regular travel route. This matter of always-having available travelable exits has been advocated for many years by the United States Bureau of Mines."

The potash mine and refinery of AMAX Chemical Corporation is located 26 miles east of Carlsbad on the north end of the potash producing areas. This property was developed between 1949-1952 and production of muriate began in August 1952. Two shafts, located 400 feet apart, were sunk to the ore zone 900 feet below the surface. A 15-foot diameter ore hoisting shaft equipped with a 1000-ton ore pocket, crusher and automatic skip loading equipment plus a 20-foot diameter service shaft with a curtain wall for exhausting air were provided. Sylvinite production to date has been from the first ore zone, stratigraphically, the lowest of ten identified mineralized zones in the salt section. This first ore zone has been the top producer of Muriate of Potash over the years. In our area we do have some very marginal mineralization in the third ore zone some 35 feet above the first. We have not mined from this seam as yet but we are investigating the economics very closely with access slopes and an experimental mining panel. Our ore seam is generally flat lying but does have local gentle rolling with grades from 2% to 5%. The mine was designed and developed from the beginning with conventional mining practices and rail haulage from the mining section to the ore pocket. As mining progressed in the early years, production increased from less than one million tons annually to a maximum of 3,935,000 tons in 1964. Efficiency also kept pace with the increasing production and continually improved until the efficiency of the production crews reached an average of 100.3 tons per manshift in 1964.

Mining ventures are essentially risky businesses. Explorers and project developers (plus their investors and financiers) attempt to minimise the risks involved or at least manage them. Core considerations are the obvious technical and commercial risks, but the socio-political system and regulatory environment in which the project will operate can be more important. Successful mineral investments in a country depend upon obtaining realistic and reliable technical results in a country that provides certainty, to gain and maintain investor confidence in a project. Brief commentary is provided on the usefulness of professional accreditation and ethics plus other specific reporting codes (eg JORC/VALMIN Codes) in reducing risks by reinforcing high technical competence and reputable individual professional behaviour (particularly in the context of currently perceived high corruption levels in so many countries). These various risk components are reviewed, especially in a global context, to showcase New ZealandÆs current position. Successful projects are those which provide investors with credible and reliable optimal results in less volatile environments because investors/lenders hate uncertainty and surprises even more.

This chapter summarizes data on crude mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Common- wealth of Puerto Rico. Included also are tables that show the principal mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables &apos;were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of volume I and in the State chapters of volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is normally termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the production of auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

Ground-water levels and subsidence have been monitored over a longwall panel of a deep coal mining operation located in western Pennsylvania. The monitoring network includes eleven ground-water monitoring wells completed to measure water level changes in separate shallow and deep aquifer zone-, and 50-foot surveyed subsidence stations parallel and perpendicular to the panel centerline. Monthly monitoring data were collected during the premining, mining, and postmining tine periods. Aquifer testing and borehole geophysical logging were conducted during premining, and post-mining conditions to document any changes in aquifer properties and ground-water flow patterns. Results indicate ground-water declines were located with respect to the mining face and mined longwall panel. Dewatering of the deep aquifer zone caused a significant water level decline in deep wells; however, the shallow aquifer zone was isolated fro major impacts by an aquitardal layer during, the, one-year period. Transmissivity data were greatly impacted by fracturing, in the highly anisotropic aquifer system. Borehole geophysical logging indicated changes in ground-water flow patterns and zones of increased fracturing from subsidence.

In this study the bonding within reduced titanomagnetite-coal compacts was investigated. The aim of the study was to better understand the binding mechanisms in the reduced compacts and, based on this understanding, to improve on their strength.Titanomagnetite ore was combined with sub-bituminous coal to form compacts. The compacts were then reduced by heating in a thermogravimetric furnace (TGA) to temperatures between 1000 - 1300&#176;C under argon. The reaction progress was monitored by measuring the weight loss with time. The reduced compacts were found to have low strength in compression testing. The main form of bonding between the reduced titanomagnetite particles in the compact was by the formation of a slag-like material. Increasing the fi nal reduction temperature was found to have a profound effect on the strength of the compacts by promoting the formation of this slag-like material.Attempts to improve the strength of the compacts were made by changing two variables, the type of coal and the addition of rice husks. The addition of coking coal gave reacted samples that had little strength, while the addition of rice husks may have enhanced the strength of the reduced compacts.

This paper presents the historical trend and de- fines the causes of drilling cost escalation in the Gulf of Mexico during the 1970&apos;s. The three major components of escalation are: 1) inflation, 2) supply-demand imbalance (demand pull) and 3) decreases in drilling efficiency. The decade was divided into three periods. During each period one component of escalation was responsible for most of the rise in costs. From 1970 through 1973 only inflation pushed costs upward. During 1974 and 1975 a supply- demand imbalance caused most of the escalation. Since 1975, decreases in drilling efficiency have produced the major component of escalation. During any one year or period of years, the sum of the three components will give the total escalation rate. The reasons why different components contribute more toward escalation during certain years than others are shown by following the timing of oil and gas price increases, the overall quality of the acreage offered each year in offshore lease sales and the resulting drilling activity.

History The Cortez Mining District has a long history of mining activity dating back to 1862. More recently, Cortez Gold Mines had operated a cyanide leach, counter current decantation (CCD) recovery gold mill from January 1969 to February 1976. This type of plant has been standard in the US for treating higher grade, finely disseminated gold in Carlin type ores. The mill was initially operated from 1969 to 1973 at 1.5 kt/d (1650 stpd) on oxidized ore from the Cortez ore body. In 1973, the mill was operated at 2 kt/d (2200 stpd) on softer, less oxidized, high clay ore from Gold Acres, located 13 km (8 miles) west of Cortez, NV. In February 1976, the oxidized portion of the ore body at Gold Acres was depleted and the mill ceased operations. Successful heap leaching of the lower grade portion of the ores was practiced at both Cortez and Gold Acres to supplement the milling operations. Valuable experience was gained in the operation of these two heap leaching programs (Duncan and Smolik, 1977). The ore heaps at Gold Acres and Cortez were releached with a limited crew from 1976 to 1979. The surge in the price of gold in late 1979 sparked an interest to incorporate new techniques into treating lower grade and less oxidized carbonaceous ores at Cortez. In early 1980, heap leaching was started on low grade oxidized dump material left from the earlier Cortez mining operation. By June of 1980, testwork was completed on the London Extension Dump, a low grade, mildly carbonaceous dump at Gold Acres. It was decided to convert the mill at Cortez from the conventional cyanide leach CCD recovery plant to a carbon-in-leach (CIL) recovery system. In May 1983, ore processing from the Horse Canyon deposit began. The Horse Canyon ore body contains both oxide and carbonaceous ores and is located 22.5 km (14 miles) from the Cortez mill. The Cortez CIL circuit was expanded to handle a blend of oxide and carbonaceous ores from Horse Canyon. Ore selection In the last quarter 1979, gold prices were increasing to a point where restarting the Cortez mill, idled since 1976, appeared imminent. Several previously explored geologic reserves at various stages of development were available as possible sources of feed for the mill. Initial metallurgical testing of dumps and tailings from earlier operations was completed, and previously uneconomic deposits were explored. It was decided to pursue sources of ore with the least lead time to production and those with the least capital cost requirements. A master plan was developed to bring the four profitable ore resources into production. Highly improved drilling machines and mucking machines have been used for the underground construction. To have rapid construction, the roles of blasting operation ha ve been growing more important. At the most tunneling of present, cartridged emulsion explosives have been used for a blasting in Japan. Under this circumstance, a blasting system of ANFO explosives using loading machine has been used recently for a tunnel blasting. However, ANFO has some problems, such as a useless explosives in wet boreholes, bad blasting fumes and the ammonia gas due to the decomposition of ammonium nitrate in contact with the sprayed concrete in tunnel.

The creep mechanism and kinetics of fine-grained magnesium have been studied over the temperature range 200&apos; to 600°F. As a result of a photographic study of microstructural changes, transient and steady-state creep components have been correlated with slip, subgrain formation, and cyclic deformation at the grain boundaries. THE approach of this research has been the blend of a quantitative study of the creep strain of polycrystalline magnesium as a function of time, stress, and temperature with direct microstructural observations of the operative deformation processes. The validity of the conclusions is dependent on the condition that the microstructural changes seen on the polished surface qualitatively represent those occurring in the bulk of the metal. The work was intended as much to lay a background to a study of highly creep-resistant magnesium alloys as to provide a description of the behavior of the base metal itself. The spectroscopic analysis of the electrolytic magnesium used in this study is as follows: Al, 0.009 pct; Ca, <0.01; Cu, 0.0011; Fe, 0.021; Mn, 0.012; Ni, 0.0004; Pb, 0.0012; Si, <0.001; Sn, <0.001; and Zn, <0.01. The impurity level is approximately that of commercial magnesium alloys. The original ingot was melted under Dow type 310 flux and cast as a 3 in. diam billet. It was extruded into 1 in. flat stock under the conditions: billet preheat 800°F (1 hr), container and die temperature 800°F, speed 3 ft per min, and area reduction ratio 45:1. The extrusion process was chosen in preference to rolling and recrystallization because it allowed easier grain size control from specimen to specimen. The grains of the extruded metal were fairly equi-axial and uniform in the size range of 4 to 6 thousandths of an inch. The preferred orientation of basal planes about the transverse direction was determined by an X-ray diffraction surface reflection method. A beam of filtered copper radiation was directed at an angle of 17" to both the transverse direction and the surface yet perpendicular to the extrusion axis. Analysis of the (002) diffraction arcs in the resulting photographic patterns gave an approximate intensity distribution along the great circle which extends through the center of the basal plane pole figure and to the extrusion axis poles. Successive layers of metal were removed by macro-etching between exposures. The extruded texture is relatively sharp, but the most significant point is the position of the maximum basal plane pole density and its variation with depth below the surface. Fig. 1 shows that this maximum is rotated 15" from the normal at the surface toward the extrusion direction. Such an inclination has been reported for extruded 1 pct Mn and 8 pct A1-0.5 pct Zn alloys.&apos; The inclination decreases until the maximum splits at about 0.025 in. depth into two elements of equal and opposite rotations from the ideal. The double texture persists to as great a depth as was experimentally convenient to examine. It probably continues to the very center of the extrusion. There is no great change in the sharpness of the individual elements of the texture with depth. A plate of metal about 0.015 in. thick at the surface of the extruded stock was produced by etching. A transmission diffraction pattern was made for the purpose of determining any preferred orientation of a direction in the basal planes. Relatively uniform {loo) and {101) rings were produced. There is little tendency for parallelism of a given direction in the plane with the projection of the extrusion axis on it. The creep specimens were machined from 6¼ in. lengths of the extruded stock. Creep was measured on the reduced section, ½x1/8X2¼ in. long. This section was electropolished on one side for the studies of microstructural changes during creep. An orthophosphoric acid-ethyl alcohol electrolyte was used under the conditions recommended by Jacquet.² Hand polishing was used for previous mechanical preparation. Electropolishing was continued until all mechanical twins had been removed. The electro-polished surface was protected from oxidation during creep testing by a thin layer of silicone oil. All micrographs were taken at room temperature on conventional metallographic equipment and after removal of the oil film. The creep tests were performed with machines which have been described in detail by Moore and McDonald." Five testing temperatures, 200°, 300°, 400°, 500°, and 600° ±3°F were used. Difference in temperature between the two ends of the specimen reduced section was 2°F or less. The testing was done at constant load. Traditionally within the mining industry, single models for both grade and geology of orebodies are created upon which all mine development decisions are based. These models provide a single interpretation of the extent and continuity of the mineralization envelope based on solids and sections interpreted from relatively wide spaced drilling i.e. the models infer behaviour of grade and geology at smaller/local scales based on data available at wider scales. The variable behaviour of grade and geology cannot be derived from single kriged resource models. In recognition of this, Newmont Mining Corporation typically uses Sequential Gaussian Simulation (SGS) to quantify grade variability and to determine its effect on some of these mine development decisions. In most of these studies the mineralized envelope remains fixed and grade simulations are generated within a fixed volume. To account for uncertainty in the geology/ mineralization envelope Newmont Mining Corporation has been experimenting with Multiple Point Statistics (MPS). Multiple-Point Statistics is an emerging technique, which can be used to generate multiple, geologically realistic, realizations of data that displays complex non-linear features. MPS uses a conceptual model of the geology, called a Training Image (TI), to infer these high-order spatial relationships. The multiple realizations allow for an assessment of the geologic uncertainty, which can be further combined with grade simulations to generate a more complete picture of the true uncertainty of a mineral deposit.
