A new porous apatite product was prepared using phosphorite from Yichang China by a tem-plate-directed method in self-made reaction equipment under constant temperature and pressure. The product was characterized by XRD, FT-IR and SEM. The results showed that the product was a kind of micrometer porous sphere three-dimensionally structured by apatite nanoflakes, that the average thickness of nanoflakes was about 50 nm, that the average pore size was about 1.2 µm and that the particle average size was about 20 µm. Great amounts of Ca2+channel, high special surface area and regular spherical shape show the potential promising applications of this special porous apatite product in the fields of catalyst, medication, chemical engineering and environment engineering

The asbestifom habit is most commonly developed in certain amphiboles and chrysotile, but other minerals may also crystallize with this unususual habit, The habit may be characterized by 1) a fibril structure, single or twinned crystals of very small widths (generally less than 0.5 inn) which have gram with a common fiber axis direction but which are disoriented in the other crystallographic directions, 2) anomalous optical properties, primarily parallel extinction, 3) unusual tensile strength, 4) high aspect ratio, and 5) flexibility. In addition, there is evidence to indicate that some amphibole asbestos may have unusual surface properties.

- Introductory IN 1882, The Arizona Copper Co. Ltd., acquired producing copper mines at Metcalf and Morenci (locally called Longfellow). Metcalf is situated a distance of 7 miles, and Morenci a distance of 6 miles from the general office of the company at Clifton, Ariz. A reduction works with five blast furnaces was built in the center of the town of Clifton in 1884 and operated until January, 1914. Concentration of oxidized ores was begun in 1890-1891, in a mill built adjoining the smelter, and in October, 1893, a leaching process was started for treating tailings from the oxide mill. A sulphide concentrator with 300 tons capacity was built at Clifton and started treating chalcocite ores in July, 1896. This was the first mill to treat low-grade copper-sulphide ores successfully. Another concentration mill for sulphide ores was erected at Morenci in 1900. The, sulphide mills are now being remodeled to treat ores by concentration and flotation, with a capacity of 4,000 tons at Morenci and 500 tons at Clifton. The leaching plant has not been running since September, 1914. "Yttria-stabilized zircohia (YSZ) has high potential to be used as solid-oxide fuel cell (SOFC) electrolyte. However, the high efficiency of SOFC has not been yet achieved due to the high internal resistance of bulk electrolyte. The resistance becomes lower with the decrease in the electrolyte thickness. Thus, the decrease in electrolyte thickness leads to lower internal resistance. . The aim of this study is as follows: (a) to prepare the thin films of YSZ by inductively-coupled RF plasma-enhanced metal organic chemical vapor deposition (PEMOCVD) process using Zr(t-OC4H9)4,Y(DPMh and oxygeil, and (b) to reveal the relationship between the structural characterizations and the process parameters.1. IntroductionYttia-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) has, been widely used as not only heat-resistant materials but also the components in automotive oxygen sensors, electrolytes of solid-oxide fuel cell (SOFC)(1)(2) and the buffer layers for the high-temperature superconductor because of its low thermal conductivity, good mechanical properties and high ionic conductivity. However, it is said that the internal resistance of the bulk electrolyte is too high to be appropriate as a solid electrolyte for high-efficient SOFC. The authors believe that the thin YSZ electrolyte can give a high performance to characteristics SOFC, since the internal resistance becomes lower with the decrease of electrolyte thickness. Thus the process technology to prepare YSZ thin films is desirable and must be established.In recent years, the YSZ thin films have been reported by chemical vapor deposition (CVD), thermal CVD using metal chlorides (MC) of ZrCl4 and YC(3)(4), thermal CVD using metal organic compounds (MO)(5)(10) Zr(t-OC4H9)4 and Y(C11H19O2)(11) and plasma-enhanced (PE) CVD using MO. Here, these methods are called MCCVD, MOCVD and PEMOCVD. MCCVD has two disadvantages; a large quantity of chlorinated impurities in deposited films and high processing temperature (> 1273K). This high processing temperature leads to damage of substrates in particular, so the application of this technology is limited. On the other hands, the processing temperature by MOCVD becomes and is lower. Unfortunately, the accurate vapor pressures of these metal organic compounds have not been, known so: that it is difficult to control the composition and the film thickness by MOCVD method well. Moreover, the large amount of carbonic compounds in the films prepared by MOCVD method is produced. However, plasma-effect has been reported to decrease large amount of the carbonic impurities by PEMOCVD. However, PEMOCVD has many reaction parameters in plasma processing; the geometry of experimental apparatus, radio frequency, electronic power input and so on. Thus, the general understanding about the relationship among reaction parameters, the composition and crystal structure of thin deposit film by this method has not yet been established."

The Ray Mines Division has a long and illustrious history beginning in 1911, as one of the early underground block caving copper mining operations. The tonnage mined from the beginning of operations, increased from about 8, 000 TPD in the early years to the present daily tonnage of 22, 500 tons, mined by open pit methods. The Ray basic milling practice has been relatively unchanged since 1927 when the sulphide-flotation process was introduced at Ray. The leach-precipitation-flotation process introduced in 1956 has been the only major process change. The change from underground to open pit' mining was accompanied by a renewed drilling and exploration program which developed large tonnages of low grade copper ores both in the porphyry and the diabase. The ore bodies as outlined were of such a grade and size that it soon became apparent that economical operations could not be developed with the lower tonnage rate. Also that in order to develop these newly proven ores, it would be necessary to move the Ray crushing plant, the Ray. supporting shops, offices, a substantial part of the Ray townsite, and would also involve the rerouting of Mineral Creek, a typical Arizona stream which is dry most of the year but can flow as high, as 8, 000 second feet in the rainy season. This paper describes those changes in flow sheet made necessary both by the increased tonnage .and the requirement to move as much of the crushing facilities from the Ray area as practical in order to free the mine for the extension of its physical limits.

The addition of nitrogen (0.10 to 0.20 pct) to Fe-Cr-Ni alloys of simulated commercial purity results in a real displacement of the u phase boundaries to higher chromium contents. The effect is small for the (Y + s)? boundary, but is pronounced for the (y + a +s)/(y + a) boundary. Although there is an indication of an exceptionally large shift of the n boundaries to higher chromium contents, especially in steels with nitrogen over 0.2 pct, the major portion of this apparent shift results from the fact that carbide and nitride precipitation cause "chromium impoverishment" of the matrices. The effect of combined additions of nitrogen and silicon to the Fe-Cr-Ni phase diagram is demonstrated also. Nitrogen can nullify the effect of about 1 pct Si in shifting the (y + o)/? phase boundary to lower values of chromium at all nickel levels from 8 to 20 pct. NItrogen can nullify this U-forming effect of about 2 pct Si at the 8 pct Ni level, but not at the 20 pct Ni level. The alloys studied were in both the cast and the wrought conditions. There are indications that the u phase forms more slowly in the cast alloys than in the wrought alloys if both are in the completely austenitic state. The presence of 6 ferrite in the cast alloys accelerates the formation of U. Cold working increases the rate of o formation in both cast and wrought alloys. THE major improvement in Fe-Cr-Ni austenitic alloys in recent years has been in the addition or removal of minor alloying elements to facilitate better control of corrosion resistance, sensitization, and heat resistance. One shortcoming of the austenitic Fe-Cr-Ni alloys, which never has been completely circumvented, is their propensity toward u formation. In the AISI-type 310 (25 pct Cr-20 pct Ni) and type 309 (25 pct Cr-12 pct Ni) steels, sufficient amounts of u phase can form, if service or treatment is in a suitable temperature range, to cause severe embrittlement. Also, there is a growing conviction that this phase may be contributory to some unexpected decreases in the corrosion resistance of certain of the 18 pct Cr-8 pct Ni-type steels. The present paper discusses the effect of nitrogen additions on the location of the (r+u)/d and the (y+a+u)/(y+a) phase boundaries in the ternary Fe-Cr-Ni system, for cast and wrought alloys of simulated commercial purity, and in similar alloys containing up to about 2.5 pct Si. The objective is to define compositional limits for alloys which will not be susceptible to u formation when used near 1200°F (650°C). An excellent review of the early studies of the u phase in the Fe-Cr-Ni system has been compiled by Foley.1 Rees, Burns, and Cook2 have determined a high purity phase diagram for the ternary system, whereas Nicholson, Samans, and Shortsleeve3 are- stricted themselves to a portion of the simulated commercial-purity phase diagram. Both groups of investigators show almost an identical position for the commercially significant (y+u)/y phase boundary. Further comparison of the work of the two groups indicates that, below the 8 pct Ni level, the commercial alloys have a decidedly greater propensity toward u formation than the high purity alloys. The two groups of workers agreed that both the AISI-type 310 (25 pct Cr-20 pct Ni) and the type 309 (25 pct Cr-12 pct Ni) steels are well within the (y+~) region and that the 18 pct Cr-8 pct Ni-type alloys straddle the U-forming phase boundaries. Nicholson et al.3 showed, in addition, that these boundaries shift toward lower chromium contents if greater than nominal amounts of silicon or molybdenum are added. The effect of nitrogen on the location of the s phase boundaries in the Fe-Cr-Ni system has not been known with any certainty. In 1942, an approach to this problem was made by Krainer and Leoville-Nowak,' but at that time they apparently were unaware of the slow rate of s formation in strain-free samples and aged their samples for insufficient times, e.g., 100 hr at 650°C (1200°F) and 800°C (1470°F). For this reason, it would be expected that their (y+ u) /y boundary would be shifted toward lower chromium contents (restricted ?-field) when equilibrium conditions were approximated more closely. The evolution of Inco's Selective Reduction Smelting Process as practised today is described, beginning with the initial laboratory experiments on small samples to the processing of large bulk samples through pilot plant equipment. For both the Guatemalan and Indonesian (Soroako) ores, the initial screening tests using hydro-, vapo-, and pyro-metallurgical processes showed that the latter was the most promising both metallurgically and economically. Later, larger scale tests confirmed the earlier testwork.

A practical method is described for determining or checking whether underground supports such as props, posts and mechanized longwall supports have bearing areas of proper size in relation to the type of ground or floor strata on which they are standing, It is felt that this information provides an approach to eliminate, as much as possible, a potential grave source of error during the selection of roof supports. This would also affect the choice of costly mechanized longwall equipment where it is possible that the size of the bearing area is not as carefully determined as, for instance, the design strength of structural components.

"Molecular self-assembly of phospholipids and other amphipathic molecules offers a versatile approach to form self-organized microstructures in various morphologies. Stabilization of microstructures in specific morphologies by polymerization renders them useful for practical applications in areas ranging from controlled release technology to template mediated synthesis of metals. Our efforts are focussed on the development of polymerizable biomembranes derived from phospholipids, their properties and utility e.g., as stable templates for studying chemistry at the lipid interface. Polymerized vesicles formed from mixtures of 1,2-bis(tricosa-1 O,12-diynoyl)-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine, 1, with corresponding lipids having phosphohydroxyethanol,2, or -hydroxypropanol,3, headgroups have been used in electroless metal plating of vesicle surface with gold utilizing selective binding of Pd(NH3)4 2 + to 2 or 3. The surface bound palladium ion served as catalyst for metalization. Metalization of polymerized vesicles constructed from charge neutral diacetylenic phosphocholine,1, did not occur using this process. The headgroup structure of the negatively charged phospholipids and the degree of vesicle polymerization had an effect on the stability of the vesicles after metalization. Vesicles formed from a mixture of 1 with polymerizable diacetylenic phosphatidic acid, nonpolymerizable 1,2- dipalmitoyl phosphohydroxyethanol or 1,2-diacyl phosphohydroxyethanol (from soy lecithin) were not stable to metalization process. The metal coating of the vesicles was examined by electron diffraction and revealed that the gold metal on vesicles was polycrystalline and face centered cubic. The results demonstrate the utility of polymerized synthetic membranes as template for easy and efficient synthesis of nanoparticles. IntroductionPhospholipids, synthetic or natural, provide a simple and straight forward route to construct membranes in a variety of morphologies due to their inherent property of selforganization in the presence of water[1]. Vesicles are closed spherical structures comprised of concentric walls made from lipid bilayers. Vesicles are morphologically simple structures with enormous technological potential. Polymerizable phospholipids prepared by incorporating a polymerizable group in the molecules demonstrate physical properties comparable to their non-polymerizable counterparts and have the added virtue of providing enhanced physical and chemical stability to the membranes[2,3]. The size, shape and properties of the organized assemblies are dependent on the lipid structure and the nature of the aqueous environment[4,5]. The headgroup geometry, surface charge density, and spatial arrangement of the phospholipids are known to affect the surface behavior of the lipid membranes, which is evident through their interaction with other molecular (hormones, antigens, antibodies etc) or lomc species. Since phospholipid headgroup structure and charge can be modified either synthetically or by chemical perturbation of the aqueous medium (e.g., pH or ionic strength), phospholipid membrane surfaces offer a potential for developing novel strategies in those areas which involve the use of molecular reactive sites. One such strategy which could be envisioned explores the use of molecularly engineered phospholipid assemblies to design and prepare template structures to regulate formation of ordered materials [6]."

The importance of the processing of secondary resources such as solid industrial wastes and liquid effuents as well as byroducts for the recovery of the associated metal values hardly needs any elaboration. Such processing contributes in no small measure.towards the augmentation of the availability and the supply position of resources. As an added benefit, it leads to a reduction in environmental pollution caused by the undesirable waste materials. As some typical examples of secondary resources in the Indian scenario, mention' can be made of spent catalysts, metal/alloy scrap, ash, consumed batteries, flue dust, slag, sludge and slime, pickling solutions, spent acids; plating rinse solutions, spent etchants, waste water from synthetic fibre manufacture and from tanneries etc. These wastes constitute a source of a variety of non ferrous metals. In the processing of secondary resources like these, the techniques of hydrometallurgy such as solvent extraction play a pivotal role. This paper outlines the efforts made to use solvent extraction to recover (1) base metals such as copper, zinc, nickel and cobalt from a number of secondary resources like cake, and sludge(2) refractory metals like molybdenum and vanadium from sulphidic, byproducts and spent catalyst and (3:) nuclear metal like uranium from phosphoric acid. In the case of base metals, process flowsheet involving the use of acidic extractants such as DEHPA and PC88A have been optimised. The problem of iron removal from the leach liquor, "which influences the metal recovery process significantly, has drawn a special emphasis. hi the case of refractory metals, basic extractants .like Alamine 336 has been pressed into service to produce kilogramme. quantities of pure salts of molybdenum and vanadium, Finally, the paper gives a brief account of plant experience in recovering uranium from phosphoric acid, using 'a solvent system comosed of DEHPA and TOPO.

1. Introduction.—The methods of production of sound steel ingots have been described in several papers read recently before this Institute. It was thought by Director Stratton, of the U. S. Bureau of Standards, and ourselves to be of sufficient interest and importance, as a further contribution to this subject, to compare the properties of rails rolled in one mill according to American practice, from several types of ingot of substantially the same chemical composition but cast by several processes; and to compare in considerable detail the properties of an ingot manufactured by the Hadfield special-feeding process and one of the usual type for rolling into rails. We are greatly indebted to F. W. Wood, President of the Maryland Steel CO., who made this investigation possible by kindly placing his rail mill at our disposal; and he and his associates at Sparrows Point did everything possible to make the experiment a success, including the execution of several of the tests and analyses. 2. Classification and Manufacture of Ingots.—Of the ingots used in this investigation, eight were made in Sheffield and furnished by Sir Robert Hadfield, and one was made and furnished by an American steel company,l as a comparison ingot, and was supposed to represent the usual type of ingot from which rails are made. The characteristics of the ingots are given in Table I. Ingots 1, 2, 3, and 4 were cast large end up and fed by the Hadfield method in the usual manner with charcoal and blast continued until the molten steel has set on the top of the head, say varying from 20 to 40 min. To ingots 1, 2, and 4 was added 0.1 per cent. aluminum, and to the nickel-chrome ingot, No. 3, 0.125 per cent. "As the amount of ferrous scrap increases every year, it becomes more and more urgent to deal with this iron-bearing resource properly. This paper puts forward a method on resource-oriented utilization of ferrous scrap (cold-bonded pelletizing), and these cold-bonded pellets can be used as coolant in a converter. The influence on the pellets qualities by using different kinds of chloride as rust agents is studied, and results show that the strength of cold-bonded pellets increases significantly by using a combination of the three kinds of chloride -NaCl,MgClz,FeCh, their best dosages are 1.2%, 0.2%, 0.1% respectively. Other iron-bearing materials also have an effect upon the pellets strength, by adding 5% iron powder and maintaining for 48h, the compressive strength of the clumps surpass 2500N/A, dropping strength surpass 4 times/ A, and 10% iron slag or 20% steel slag can replace 5% iron powder while obtaining the comparative quality. The influence of different ratios of three ferrous scrap (converter mud, iron scale and dust) is further studied, and results show that when the ratio is 30% : 30% : 40%, the pellet strength reaches the maximum. After maintaining for 24~48h, the clumps can meet the mechanical as well as the physical-chemical requirements as BOF steelmaking refrigerant.IntroductionGreat amounts of converter mud, dust and iron scale are produced in steel production process. These materials are of great values, and their accumulation not only leads to environmental pollution, but also wastes the precious resources, which restricts the sustainable development of the steel industry [1,2] The main approach at present to dealing with the ferrous scrap is to add them into sintering. But in this way, the utilization factor of sintering and the quality of sinter decline while the energy consumption increases [3].Therefore, more advanced and efficient technology is needed to make the best of these iron resources. Cold consolidation of ferrous scrap is a simple process that has many advantages such as less investment, quicker effect, lower energy and lower cost [4-5] But the conventional maintaining period is too long, usually up to four-six weeks, and the pellet strength is low. Therefore, the key points of the cold-bonded pelletizing are to develop a new adhesive [4,5] to shorten the natural maintenance cycle and to improve the strength of the pellets. A method on resource-oriented utilization of ferrous scrap (cold-bonded pelletizing) is brought forward, and these cold-bonded pellets can be used as coolant in converter. After maintaining for 48h, these cold-bonded pellets can satisfy the mechanical requirements to replace the converter coolant [6]."

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the relationship between cur-rent load and temperature rises in coal mine trailing cables. Six low-voltage, unshielded, portable power cables were continuously and intermittently loaded with direct current of various magnitudes. Temperature rises within and on the cables were measured with thermocouples, and the data were recorded with a computer. Thermal time constants were calculated, which fixed the periods of the duty-cycle tests. Relationships between average temperature at the conductor-insulation interface and current load were established. The steady-state and intermittent currents that produce a 90° C average conductor-insulation temperature were then determined. Comparisons with Insulated Cable Engineers Association (ICE A) steady-state ratings revealed that 10 to 25 pct more current than recommended ICEA ampacities is required to reach rated insulation temperature. Examination of the maximum intermittent temperatures attained showed that autoignition of coal dust and burn injuries to personnel handling the cable would not be concerns if the temperature at the conductor-insulation interface averaged 90° C.

CUSHMAN, Middletown, Ohio (written discussion*).¬ This subject is one to which I have given much thought and study and which I have frequently discussed informally with Mr. Cain and others. I have long been convinced that the gaseous elements, either combined or entrained (occluded), in steel play a much more important role than is ordinarily admitted. This is probably due to the difficulties encountered in the accurate quantitative estimation of gases, some of which Mr. Cain has referred to, as well as to the fact that, considered from the weight-percentage basis, gas content is measurable only in hundredths or even thousandths of 1 per cent. Volumetrically, however, the results ob-tained by modern research are startling, to say the least. Baraduc-Muller,1 as cited by Mr. Cain, pumped out of 1000-lb. ingots of basic Bessemer steel 2100 l. of gas. or about 75 cu. ft., at normal temperature and pressure, per ton of steel. In other words, we are to understand that Bessemer steel normally carries about fifteen times its own volume of gas. Open cut coal-mining has been conducted in the Bowen Basin region of central Queensland for almost five decades, and has disturbed an estimated area of 140 000 ha of agricultural land until 2011. Approximately one-third of the area disturbed by mining has been rehabilitated to pastures or bushland. However, none of the rehabilitated land has yet been assigned a specific end-use. This research project develops an approach for assessing end-use risks for the regionÆs mined land, and develops risk assessment models for selected end-uses. First, a web-based survey of stakeholders was used to identify risks to be assessed. The risks identified were surface erosion, subsurface erosion, bushfires, weeds and feral animals. The survey also identified possible end-uses of bushland and grazing. Second, conceptual risk models were developed based on the risk assessment concepts of likelihood and consequence specified in the Australian and New Zealand risk assessment standards. Likelihood was modelled using site characteristics and management factors that influence the occurrence probability of risks (eg surface erosion), while consequence was modelled using a set of site condition indicators and condition thresholds (changes in root-zone water-holding capacity, soil erodibility, vegetation ground cover and soil organic matter and transition probability to a non-preferred ecosystem type).The factors influencing likelihood and consequence for each risk have been integrated using Bayesian networks. The next step in model development is to parameterise the Bayesian networks using existing equations, empirical datasets, or expert opinion where data are not available. The parameterised models will be used to assess grazing and bushland end-uses against erosion, bushfire, weed and feral animal risks for rehabilitated mined land sites, with the purpose of identifying the relative risks associated with each end-use, and the landform design specifications and land management practices under which end-use risks are minimised.CITATION:Maczkowiack, R I, Smith, C and Erskine, P D, 2012. Model pillars of limestone, marble, sandstone, and granite, with length-to-diameter ratios of 3, 2, 1, 0.5, and 0.25 (0.286 for granite), were broken in axial compression to determine to what extent an increase in end constraint increased compressive strength. Radial end constraints of 13 to 23 percent of the average axial stress in the pillar, produced by solid steel rings bonded with epoxy to the ends of dogbone-shaped specimens, increased compressive strength somewhat above that of cylindrical pillars without ring constraint. However, when the results were compared with those obtained by other investigators for straight specimens of several rock types taken collectively, with L/D ratios greater than 0.5, the resulting strengths were not significantly different. Thus, the amount of end constraint produced by the solid steel rings was about the same as that produced by the friction from the steel end plates. In other tests a radial prestress of 3,000 psi or 5,000 psi was applied prior to axial loading by adjustable hardened steel rings to increase the constraint above that obtained for the solid rings. The average radial constraint stress, expressed as a percentage of the average axial pillar stress at failure for the 3,000 psi prestress, was 54.3 percent for limestone, 40.3 percent for marble, 44.7 percent for sandstone, and 23.4 percent for granite. The average radial constraint stress, expressed as a percentage of the average axial pillar stress at failure for the 5,000 psi prestress, was 74.2 percent for limestone, 51.2 percent for marble, 61.6 percent for sandstone, and 29.7 percent for granite. These constraints increased the compressive strength significantly above the strength of straight specimens and solid-ring constrained specimens. These results suggest that large horizontal stresses in orebodies mined by the room and pillar method should increase the strength of the pillars and allow an increase in ore recovery by a reduction of pillar size when major structural defects are absent.

The objectives of this paper are: to review the current status of chloride leach processes for sulfide concentrates, to make an evaluation as to the applicability of chloride leaching for replacing pyrometallurgical processes and to comment on recent advances in construction materials. The paper does not delve in detail on process chemistry. Sufficient references are presented on each process to allow the interested researcher to obtain process chemistry details. GENERAL The fact that chloride oxidates can solubilize base metals from sulfide concentrates has been known since the 1880's. The work of Hoepfner in 1902 was particularly accurate for its time with regard to the chemistry of chloride solutions. Recent work has dealt with the understanding of chloride extraction thermodynamics by modelling the behavior of metal chloride complexes. In the last several years several excellent review articles and symposiums have been issued covering chloride chemistry (1 thru 6).

Technology developed and first implemented in the United Kingdom enables very low grade aluminum scraps containing oils, organics, plastics and ferrous metals to be directly charged, without pretreatment, into a unique melting furnace. The system has been in full scale production for four years. The oxy-fuel-based furnace design incorporates internal afterburning in the furnace's hot zone, producing excellent thermal efficiency and very low emissions. The furnace is inherently low in NOx. This paper will provide both theoretical background and extensive operating results for this new melting concept. Applications describing both purpose built new furnaces and retrofits of existing reverberatory furnaces will be presented. Extensive operating emissions data will be presented.
