"Although oxygen is widely employed as the oxidant of choice in gold leaching by cyanide, its low aqueous solubility presents some drawbacks in practical application; hydrogen peroxide has therefore been considered as a possible alternative. The aim of this investigation was to study the catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, which generates an oxidizing intermediate species, and to understand its effect on cyanide destruction. Operating conditions that facilitated the effective decomposition of hydrogen peroxide were established by varying the pH and catalyst type and concentration. The oxidizing intermediate, detected using an indirect technique, was found to be the hydroxyl radical (OH?). OH? is commonly generated in acidic solutions, but this work demonstrated that it is also produced at the alkaline pH values necessary for cyanide gold leaching. The effects of free and complexed iron and copper catalysts on the oxidation and consumption of hydrogen peroxide and cyanide were also investigated. It was shown that the cyano complexes of Fe(II) and Cu(I) are also effective as decomposition catalysts. Hydrogen peroxide concentrations above 0.01 M decreased the free cyanide concentration, which was attributed to the probable formation of the cyanate anion (CNO-). Although cyanide consumption increased due to its oxidation in the presence of OH?, excessive cyanide consumption in the presence of copper was attributed primarily to its complexation by the unstable copper(I) cyanide species. Rate constants for the decompositions of H2O2 and cyanide by ferrocyanide and copper cyanide were calculated; the latter was identified as being a better catalyst. The EU-financed INTREAT Project (Integrated treatment of industrial wastes to¬wards prevention of regional water resources contamination) addresses the environmental pollution associated with solid and liquid wastes/effluents produced by complex sulphide ore mining and metallurgical activities. The results concerning the electrolytic recovery of cop¬per from effluents formed after mixing of streams from Copper Refining, Precious Metals Plant and Electrolyte Regeneration in the Balkan Area will be shown. The waste water is characterized by low pH values and high contents of heavy metals, such as Cu, Ni, Bi, As, Sb. The majority of these waste water flow untreated into the natural water streams and through the network of existing rivers, which end up in the river Danube. The influence of current density and flow rate on the deposition rate, the quality of copper and the process efficiency will be presented. The dissolution process of phosphate rock from the Semikan area (Mardin-Mazidagi, Turkey) using dilute phosphoric acid has been investigated. The work involved studying the effect of important variables, such as reaction time, stirring speed, particle size fraction, phosphoric acid concentration and temperature. Van der Sluis et al.?s model was used to determine the rate of the partial dissolution of phosphate ore. Mass-transfer coefficients (kL) varied between 2.8 and 28.5.10-3 m.s-1. The activation energy of the process varied between 16 and 20 kJ.mol-1. It has been found that the dissolution process is controlled by calcium ion diffusion, rather than by chemical reaction.

THREE surface activity procedures are in com--L mon use for the determination of diffusion coefficients in solids. In the oldest of these' the activity observed at the original surface is compared before and after diffusion, where all the activity is in a thin, plated layer on the surface before diffusion. Partial absorption of the radiations from active atoms which have diffused below the surface reduces the effective activity after diffusion. The formula employed to calculate the diffusion coefficient is where F, is the ratio of final to initial activity at the surface, measured with identical counting geometry; Z=u3Dt, where D is the diffusion coefficient; t is the diffusion time; and u is the absorption coefficient for the radiation in the solid as defined by Lambert's law. This absorption law implies that all the rays are parallel to each other and normal to the specimen surface. This assumption of a collimated beam used by Steigman, Shockley, and Nix has been adopted by all other investigators and, although it gives results which are approximately correct under restricted physical conditions, it does not represent many actual circumstances. It is the purpose of this paper to show the importance of the divergent rays and to indicate a procedure for taking them into account. In the residual activity method the activity is determined on a series of surfaces ground on the specimen at progressively greater depths in the diffusion layer parallel to the initial surface. Gruzin2 has de- rived a formula for this procedure, which may be put in the form where I is the ratio of the activity measured at a newly ground surface at distance k below the initial surface to the activity at the initial surface measured after diffusion, and K= k/2p Dt. A third procedure involves the autoradio-graphic determination of activity on a plane ground at a small angle to the initial interface through the penetration zone. Aut oradiography can be particularly sensitive to the oblique rays. Unlike most counters which detect essentially all ß particles or X-rays which enter the active volume as a single event, the photographic emulsion may be thin enough so that oblique rays with longer path length in the emulsion produce more darkening than rays which move normal to the film plane. A series of steel heats, one low-alloy and nine carbon, was made by the Bureau of Mines in a 1-ton arc furnace from ferrous scrap from incinerated refuse, steel cans, and detinned steel cans, both alone and blended with heavy-melting scrap. Two additional control heats, one of carbon steel and one of low-alloy steel, were made from electric furnace heavy-melting scrap to pro-vide comparative data. The steel products were cast into two 4-by 4-inch nominal 50-pound ingots; in most heats, an 8-by 8-inch nominal 7S0-pound ingot was also obtained. Tests of these ingots indicated that reinforcing bars of acceptable quality can be made from urban refuse components such as steel cans.

Before going into this subject, I would very much like to call to your attention some past history on patents granted by the United States Patent office that involved ammonium nitrate. On February 10, 1885, a patent was granted to Russell S. Penniman. "The object of this invention is to securely protect ammonium nitrate against deliquescent and to maintain it in substantially its normal disintegrated condition, so as to afford a new product suited for ready use in the manufacture of high explosives, and enable the immediate admixture thereof with any of the well known explosive substances or compounds heretofore employed. 'Whether the nitrate be thus granulated or otherwise reduced to a granular or divided condition, it is then thoroughly mixed with about twelve (12) percent of the fluid or semi-fluid carbonaceous protecting medium, which forms a readily applied jacket or coating for the granules of nitrate and also serves as a carbonaceous element in such explosive compounds as it may thereafter be employed in."

Extensive spectroscopic data are needed in making reliable vibrational assignments for use in calculating thermodynamic functions of polyatomic molecules. The fundamental vibrations of organic molecules may be observed at any wavelength from 2.5 to 200 microns (micron = µ = 10-4 centimeters), but most often in the region from 3µ to 50µ. Raman spectra generally cover the range in which fundamental vibrations occur, but equally important infrared spectra usually are not measured at wavelengths longer than 25µ. This limitation results because most infrared spectra are determined for analytical purposes, which seldom require information outside the region 2µ to 25µ. Measurements of infrared spectra in the range 15µ to 35µ recently were begun by the Bureau of Mines to obtain data needed in making vibrational assignments. This report presents the spectra of the following thirteen compounds: Tetrahydrofuran, 1-methylpyrrole, piperidine, 2-methylpyridine, 3-miuthylpyridine, 2-propanethiol, cyclopentanethiol, 2-methyl-2-butanethiol, 3,3-dimethyl-2-thiabutane, cyclohexanethiol, cyclopentyl-l-thiaethane, 2,4-dimethyl-3-thiapentane, and hexamethyldisiloxane.

The ISRM commission on testing methods has recently presented Suggested Methods for rock stress determination (Kim & Franklin, 1987). This proposes that even if the magnitude of in situ stress is not sufficient to cause significant ground problems, the optimum shape, orientation, and layout of underground structures can be significantly affected by it. In the design of underground excavations, the engineer often requires a knowledge of the average in situ stress tensor in the rock mass. However, attempts to measure a stress state applicable to design have proved frustrating, and a high degree of uncertainty is introduced by the variability in results. In the belief that deduced fluctuations are random in nature, many separate measurements are often made, so that a more reliable stress tensor average, and some indication of the associated variance (see Dyke et al., 1986) can be calculated. Unfortunately, this approach is limited by economic considerations and, as with any sampling procedure, it is imperative to understand the sources of measured variability, in order to design an optimum measurement programme. Cundall(1987) itemised the main causes of stress variability as a. Instrument and measurement errors, and b. Natural fluctuations of stress from point to point, induced by the action of a boundary stress on the internal rock structure. At least four categories exist: i. inhomogeneous rock, bedding, intrusions etc.; ii. differential contraction, creep, or changes in rock properties with time; iii. proximity to faults or discontinuities; iv. cycles of tectonic activity that cause movement on joints. The latter was successfully investigated using the distinct element programme UDEC. In this paper, the contribution of items (iii) and (iv) (i.e. the items related to discontinuities) to the total stress variability will be discussed, for the kind of rock mass shown in Figure 1. Although many authors have concluded that rock joints have an influence on the stress in their vicinity, a more analytical approach is required if the stress distribution associated with different jointed rock masses is to be (i) compared, and (ii) related to routinely measured joint parameters. If this can be achieved then, prior to any attempt to measure stress in a jointed rock mass, a consideration of joint geometry, joint deformability, and the geological kinematics of joints (e.g. the magnitude and direction of previous movements), can place valuable `common sense' constraints on the expected stress system for minimal extra cost.

Inter-Mountain Labs, IML, performed a study comparing mining waste rock sample analysis by Net Carbonate Value (NCV) and Modified Sobek acid-base accounting procedures. The study looked at 468 waste rock samples and compared the data for Neutralization Potential (NP), Acid Generation Potential (AGP), Net Neutralization Potential (NNP), and the ratio of NP/AGP. The study found that a majority of the samples were below 50 Tons CaCO3/kTons. This subset of ?low-level? samples was also examined separately for Acid Base Accounting parameters. The analysis compared the NCV procedures to the Modified Sobek procedures and concludes that the NCV procedures are as protective of the environment as Modified Sobek procedures.

INTRODUCTION Ferromanganese (FeMn) crusts from Mendeleev Ridge, Chukchi Borderland, and Alpha Ridge, in the Amerasia Basin, Arctic Ocean, are similar based on morphology and chemical composition. The crusts are characterized by two- to four-layered stratigraphy. The chemical composition of the Arctic crusts differs significantly from hydrogenetic crusts from the North Pacific Prime Zone (PCZ; Hein et al., 2013), such as a high mean Fe/Mn ratio (2.6 versus 1.3) and low Si/Al ratio (1.8 versus 4.0), with lower Mn, Ca, Ti, P, Ba, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sr, and Zn and higher Si, Al, Mg, As, Li, V, Sc, and Th. Based on Arctic FeMn crust mineralogy, chemical composition, and growth rates, crust formation was dominated by three processes: Precipitation of Fe-Mn (oxyhydr)oxides from ambient ocean water, sorption of metals by the Fe and Mn phases, and fluctuating but large inputs of terrigenous debris (Konstantinova et al., 2017; Hein et al., 2017). The Mn and Fe phases are hydrogenous and reflect bottom ocean-water chemistry and the aluminosilicate phase contains stable detrital minerals such as quartz, feldspars, zircon, monazite, and clay minerals. A precise method of studying the distribution of elements in FeMn crust phases is sequential leaching that dissolves four mineral phases of different stability step-by-step, in the following order: easily leachable phase, mostly bio-calcite; manganese oxides; iron oxyhydroxides; and residual aluminosilicate minerals (Koschinsky and Halbach, 1995). Twelve bulk crusts and crust layer samples obtained from six hydrogenous FeMn crusts were studied. Those crusts were collected during Russian (Arktika 2012) and USA (HLY0805, HLY0905, and HLY1202) research cruises from different parts of the Amerasia Basin (Mendeleev and Alpha Ridges, Chukchi Borderland). Samples were chosen for the sequential leaching experiments based on their morphology, location, and water depth. Hydrogenetic crust (D07-33) from the Tuvalu EEZ, central-west Pacific Ocean, was included in the experiment for comparison. Recovery during the four-step sequential leaching, with respect to the bulk analyses, was between 80% and 120%.

Nanotechnology can provide solutions to many of the world?s socio-economic challenges. The application of nanomaterials for water treatment and analysis, point-of-care diagnostics and targeted drug delivery systems or devices could improve the quality of life for people in developing countries. Gold colloids have a long history (dating back to the 4th century AD) and are particularly well known for their aesthetic appeal and their therapeutic properties. Since Faraday published a report on the synthesis and properties of colloidal gold in 1857, a reasonable insight into the nature of gold sols (nucleation, growth and kinetics of coagulation) has been developed. Considerable attention has been drawn during the past few decades to the development and optimization of methods for the preparation of gold nanoparticles. In nanoscience and nanotechnology today, gold nanomaterials appear to be the most widely used material by both academics and industrialists. This is due to the extraordinary properties of gold nanoparticles (e.g. optical, catalytic, and magnetic?they are also known to act as strong Raman enhancers and may also amplify fluorescence under certain circumstances). Mintek, through Project AuTEK and the DST/Mintek Nanotechnology Innovation Centre (NIC), has been at the forefront of the development of new industrial uses for gold. Mintek?s gold nanotechnology programme focuses on the development of gold-based nanostructured materials and their applications in health, water and other related areas. While few projects use gold nanoparticles for water treatment and analysis, Mintek?s gold nanoparticles are widely used in the health sector. For example, gold nanoparticles are engineered and produced in large quantities as systems for targeted drug delivery. They are also used as tools for advanced rapid diagnostic tests. Both optical and electrochemical rapid diagnostic methods are developed for the human and animal health sectors for point-of-care testing. This paper gives a brief introduction and overview of gold nanotechnology, and desrcibes the development of some of Mintek?s gold nanoparticle targeted drug delivery systems and lateral flow point of care prototype devices.

Conventional Smelting Practice Conventional copper smelting practice varies from smelter to smel¬ter, but generally consists of some or all of the following unit processes: roasting, smelting, converting, and fire refining. Roasting. Copper sulfide concentrates can be smelted directly or after an initial roasting step. Roasting is used in some smelters because roasting prior to smelting increases smelting capacity, less energy is required to melt hot roaster calcines than wet sulfide concen¬trates, roaster off gases are high in Sot concentration, 5-15% SO2, and some volatile impurities are removed from the concentrate prior to smelting. However, many smelters do not use roasters, because the problems associated with handling hot dry calcines outweigh the advantages mentioned. Concentrate roasting is performed in multiple hearth or fluid bed roasters. If the moisture is low, roasting can be performed autogenously, usually at 500-600°C. High roasting temperatures are avoided because excess oxidation of the iron compounds may lead to magnetite formation. Magnetite is detrimental to reverb operation because mag¬netite can combine with refractory minerals to form a highly viscous slag. This slag prohibits efficient matte-slag separation and leads to excessive copper losses. Also, magnetite can settle through the matte layer, deposit on the furnace bottom, and consequently reduce furnace capacity. Roasting is carried out only on sulfide concentrates prior to smelt¬ing in reverb or electric furnaces. For smelting processes, such as the flash and continuous that rely on the exothermic heat of oxidation of the sulfur minerals, roasting is not practiced. Reverberatory Smelting. The predominate copper smelting fur¬nace for the past 50 years has been the reverb. These furnaces are typically 100-120 ft long, 30-35 ft wide, and 12-15 ft high. A typical furnace layout is shown in Fig. 2. Refractory brick linings cover all internal surfaces of the furnace. Originally the flame was directed to reverberate or reflect off the furnace ceiling and melt the feed material. Current practice is to direct the flame down the furnace length to melt the concentrate. A method of charging the concentrates or calcines, generally along the side walls to minimize refractory erosion, is incorporated in the furnace design. The copper concentrates, calcines, and fluxes charged into the reverb undergo a series of complicated reactions as the temperature of the mixture increases. The reaction of the iron and copper sulfides with the oxygen in the furnace produces a molten Cu25-FeS mixture called matte. Copper smelting metallurgy is based on the fact that sulfur has a greater affinity for copper than for iron and most other common metals. Therefore, in a system containing copper, the copper will preferentially remain as a sulfide compound until all of the other metals have been oxidized. The oxidized metals combine with silica to form a silicate slag that floats on the matte and is removed from the system. Reverberatory furnace smelting chemistry can be approximated by the following chemical equations: FeS2 + O2 - FeS+ SO2 (1) The formation of FeS ensures that any copper present other than as sulfides will be reduced by the relationship: CuO2 + 2FeS + O2 - CuS + 2FeO+SO2 (2) or 2Cu +FeS - Cu2S + Fe (3) As the molten charge travels down the furnace, continued oxida¬tion of the iron minerals and sulfurization of the copper minerals occurs. When all of the copper has been converted to sulfides, the iron sulfides can then be further oxidized as: FeS + (3)2 O2 FeO + SiO2 (4) The FeO reacts with the silica added as flux in the furnace charge. A simplified equation is: FeO + SiO2 -FeO SiO2 (5) The iron silicate slag formed is skimmed from the surface at the end opposite the burners. The copper content of reverb slag is usually less than 0.6% Cu and is discarded. Matte is removed along the side wall and is taken to the converter for oxidation of the remaining sulfur and iron. The main objectives in reverberatory smelting are to produce a molten Cu2S-FeS matte containing 30-60% Cu and a throwaway slag. Production of matte permits complete conversion of all copper minerals into copper sulfides, which can migrate because of specific gravity differences, through the lighter slag layer. Also, the molten matte droplets collect the noble metals, gold and silver, as the matte settles in the furnace. The large settling area of the furnace provides enough separation time to produce a low grade slag, which can be discarded without further processing. High heat losses are associated with reverberatory smelting be¬cause of the large volume of gases sweeping through the furnace. Therefore, an outside source of heat is required to keep the smelting reaction going. Natural gas, fuel oil, or pulverized coal are used as this heat source.

Five lignites from the northern Great Plains province were carbonized at temperatures from 500° to 1,000° C in a bench-scale unit. A replicated Greco-Latin square experimental design was employed to allow testing of four independent variables at five levels. Independent variables investigated were temperature, source of lignite (mine), weight of charge, and moisture content of charge. Dependent variables were char yield, tar yield, light-oil yield, tar plus light-oil yield, carbonization gas yield, and carbonization gas heat yield. An analysis of variance indicated that, at the 99-percent confidence level, the independent variables of carbonization temperature, source of lignite, and weight of charge were significant for yields of char, tar plus light oil, and carbonization gas, whereas moisture content was only significant for carbonization gas yields. At the 95-percent confidence level, moisture content significantly influenced the carbonization gas heat yield per pound of lignite charge and the yields of dry tar plus light oil. All dependent variables were determined on a moisture- and ash-free basis. Multiple regression equations for predicting seven different factors of carbonization yields as functions of carbonization temperature and initial composition were developed using computer techniques. Equations for yields of char, tar plus light oil, and carbonization gas were compared with equations previously developed by others at the 500° C level.

During the last decade, advances were made in solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) technologies. Combined with heap leaching, these technologies made it viable to exploit large, low-grade oxide copper deposits. The El Abra Mine is a good example for such a deposit. The deposit is situated in northern Chile at an elevation of about 4,000 m (14,000ft), 70 km (45 miles) north of Calama. Codelco sold 51% of the El Abra to Cyprus Minerals in June 1994, with Codelco retaining the balance. In 1993, Cyprus and the engineer on the project began discussions withinternational companies regarding the materials-handling system requiredfor the project. These early discussions were considered critical for this fast-track project.

Extensive use is made of a small scale computer (IBM 1130), in the calculations of ore reserves for Western Mining Corporation's nickel mine at Kambalda, W.A. All surface drilling data such as assays, density and location information, are stored on disk files at the Company's Technical Computing Centre at Perth, W.A. The computer is used to search through the data, select significant ore intersections, calculate the area of influence of each intersection and perform the necessary calculations to arrive at an estimate of the ore reserve. Pressure oxidation tests have been conducted by Sherritt for a refractory gold-silver project located in China. The feed contained 39 g/t Au and 970 g/t Ag; the major gold-bearing minerals were pyrite and arsenopyrite. Since the feed contained a significant amount of silver, which can be refractory to cyanide leaching after pressure oxidation due to the formation of argentojarosite, the test program included investigation of methods to enhance silver recovery. The "lime boil" process proved successful and was incorporated into the flowsheet. Gold extraction from the lime boil product solids was 95 to 98%; silver extraction was up to 94%.

The Konongo Gold Project is located on the western margin of the 125 Moz Ashanti Gold Belt in Ghana, West Africa. It is situated 60 km along strike of the world-class mineral system at Obuasi and is interpreted to lie on the same controlling regional shear system.The project is operated by Signature Metals, a subsidiary of the Liongold Corporation, and is managed and funded by the Liongold Corporation.Historic underground operations at Konongo produced 1.6 Moz Au at a head grade of 11.8 g/t Au, from eight operations spread along 16 km of the shear system. Mining focused almost exclusively on free-milling gold in quartz, ignoring the gold-bearing sulfide mineralisation associated with the quartz veins. Underground mining ceased in 1986.In 2013, Signature Metals re-focused the program at Konongo to assess the viability of mining the sulfide ore sustainably. This led to the first campaign review of the historic underground data and resource potential since mine closure. The Obenemase mine was the first of the eight operations to be assessed as part of this campaign.Large amounts of legacy data have survived for Obenemase and several historic resource estimations have been completed based on these data. The data typically consisted of hand-drawn sections and plans, and ledgers of commonly incomplete drilling and sampling data. Some drill core have been lost over time, but a large amount of quarter-core and half-core as well as pulps and rejects are still available. Previous resource estimates had a low confidence value because all the available assay and geological data were integrated effectively with the estimates, resulting in a lack of understanding of both grade and geological continuity.This project built a new geological model for Obenemase that greatly enhances the understanding of the controls on mineralisation using a thorough approach of re-surveying, re-cataloguing and re-logging. This model led to an increased degree of confidence and a subsequent upgrade of resource classification, and created several previously unrecognised strong exploration targets. The resulting resource estimates increased the value of the project by 100 per cent.This paper emphasises and highlights the importance of a well-understood geological model on the confidence of a resource estimate and how this may directly impact on the project’s ‘bottom line’.CITATION:Sterk, R and Reid, B, 2014. The investigation described in this publication was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the effectiveness of the anionic silica flotation method on goethitic iron-bearing materials from the Cuyuna Range, Minn. Samples used in this investigation were a composite of drill core from 13 holes, and 3 samples from lean ore stockpiles. These samples are believed to be typical of the mineralization occurring in an area with a potential reserve of several million tans of submarginal iron ore. Results from batch tests showed that the iron-bearing minerals could be effectively concentrated by flotation removal of the siliceous gangue. The drill hole composite yielded laboratory flotation concentrates from locked tests containing 56.8 percent Fe and 6.1 percent silica, with an accompanying iron unit recovery of 94.2 percent. Concentrates containing 52.4 to 53.7 percent Fe also were produced from the lean ore stockpile materials; corresponging iron recoveries ranged from 71 to 79 percent in the batch tests, with the possibility remaining for additional recovery of iron from the middlings.

PT Freeport IndonesiaÆs Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mine is the new underground block caving mine within the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS) which started production in mid-2000. The DOZ will produce 25 000 tpd using mechanised block cave mining method and will be the fourth underground mine opened within the EESS deposit. A review of the DOZ extraction bolting design was conducted in November 2000. The aim of this review was to re-evaluate the effectiveness of the current design in relation to bolt length and spacing and to challenge some questions about the technical background of the design. For instance, the influence of the rock condition on the design. To review this bolting design, several books and papers are reviewed and several experienced people have been contacted to give their opinion. The methodology used for this review is:reviewing the technical background of current design; collecting ideas and alternatives; collecting data from books and personal communication and conducting analysis; and conclusion and proposed design.

There is an apparent push to develop and commercialise "new and innovative" process flow sheets. A not-too-difficult reality check clearly demonstrates that the success rate of this push is not particularly significant and in fact could be regarded as a waste or misappropriation of R&D funding and the associated brain power. As Julian Sumner Miller would comment "why is this so?" To put it bluntly, many of the so-called innovative developments are equivalent to gold plating the dunny door - visually interesting but of very limited practical value.
