Closure cost estimates may be generated at any stage of a mining operationÆs life; commencing with the initial prefeasibility studies and continuing through to the final decommissioning cost estimates. However, not all mine closure cost estimates are necessarily the same. Cost estimates will vary depending on the purpose for which they are prepared, the organisations requiring or undertaking the estimate and the stage of the mining operation. Different organisations can legitimately arrive at disparate cost estimates for closing the same mine because the organisations have different reasons for requiring the estimates. Another, equally valid, reason for potentially wide variations in cost estimates by different organisations on the same mine site is the different definitions of æclosure costsÆ used by different estimators. This paper considers the different approaches by different organisations including operating companies, government authorities and financial organisations and uses a hypothetical example based on practical experience to illustrate some of these differences in estimation methods.The paper suggest that a more consistent approach to closure cost estimating in the Australian mining industry would assist mining companies, governments, the accounting industry and the broader community to better understand this complex component of mine planning. This paper presents two case studies where fracture set orientation was quantified using three methods: a simple fracture pole grouping, a Fisher distribution and a Kent distribution. The three fracture orientation representations were then used as inputs for kinematic slope stability analysis. Differences showed up in the probability of sliding for all instability modes considered.

O balanço de energia realizado em um forno de aquecimento de tarugos apresentou rendimento de 53%. A maior perda energética estava relacionada ao sistema de refrigeração dos skids, cujo valor calculado foi de 18%. Objetivando minimizar tais perdas, estudou-se a utilização de um novo tipo de revestimento refratário para esta região. O fabricante de refratários apresentou uma estimativa de ganho de 62%. Desta forma, a VBR planejou um teste para validar a eficiência do refratário proposto. Neste teste, o produto foi instalado em uma viga auxiliar. Esta viga foi instrumentada, e foram registrados dados de vazão, pressão e temperatura do fluido de refrigeração (água). Objetivando comparar estes valores com o material convencional anteriormente instalado, outra viga com as mesmas características (dimensões e posição no forno) também foi instrumentada. Posteriormente, foram feitos os balanços de energia em cada viga para quantificação das perdas de energia térmica. Os resultados encontrados mostram uma redução de 92% da perda térmica relacionada ao sistema de refrigeração dos skids. Considerando a eficiência do forno de 53% e a redução de 92% da perda térmica, estima-se uma economia de R$ 1.200.000 por ano.

This report analyzes the petroleum-production potential of the basal Greenbrier dolomite zone, Sycamore-Millstone field, Sherman District, Calhoun County, W. Va., through the application of certain secondary-recovery methods. The well logs obtained and the core recovered from a well in this formation permitted an evaluation of the productive capability of the reservoir, Approximately 120,000 stb of oil may be produced from a 20-acre five-spot unit at breakthrough if the property is waterflooded. At an assumed limiting producing gas-oil ratio of 20)000 sef/stb, approximately 69,000 stb of oil should be recovered by low-pressure gas drive.

O presente trabalho tem como objetivo promover, através da técnica de elipsometria, a caracterização de propriedades ópticas e dielétricas do nióbio metálico e, além disto, medir a espessura dos filmes finos de óxido de nióbio formados. Devido a grande variedade de aplicações em importantes setores, o nióbio se tornou um elemento de grande importância para o desenvolvimento tecnológico em áreas estratégicas e o Brasil destaca-se neste contexto por deter as maiores reservas mundiais. Logo, conhecer o máximo de informações sobre este material é de grande importância para direcionar estudos às aplicações tecnológicas a fim de se agregar valor ao nióbio e seus compostos. Após a realização das medidas de parâmetros elipsométricos, e modelagem apropriadas, foram geradas satisfatoriamente as propriedades ópticas e dielétricas do material. Sendo também medida a espessura do óxido formado de forma natural sobre o substrato de nióbio metálico.

Acid mine drainage, discharging from coal beds, has polluted our streams and rivers since early time. These pollutants affect water quality by lowering the pH, reducing natural alkalinity, increasing total hardness, and adding undesirable amounts of iron, manganese, aluminum and sulfates, The tangible damages are the costs involved in replacing equipment corroded by the acid water, additional treatment costs at municipal and industrial water treatment plants, and damages resulting from corrosion of steel culverts, bridge piers, locks, boat hulls, steel barges, pumps, and condensers. Intangible damages, which are real and important, include destruction of biological life of the stream, reduced property values, and streams rendered undesirable for recreational uses.1 The major problems of mine drainage occur in the anthracite and bituminous coal regions in Appalachia. However, many of the western mining states have significant mine drainage problems in specific areas, but the overall problem is not as great as in the eastern states.

The charter of this investigation was to identify and promote the application of noise control technology to future longwall mining machinery. Intensive noise and vibration data were acquired on a typical longwall shearing machine, and the highest noise levels were shown to radiate from the cutter drums. Shearing machine cutter drum noise control techniques that take advantage of the nature of the dynamic forces generated during coal cutting were developed. These include both structural redesign and force isolation techniques. A reduced noise cutter drum was developed that achieved a 5 to 6 dBA system noise reduction at the operator's position. Its operational performance was verified by a six-month long in-mine test. It was evident from the data that additional noise reduction could be achieved by treatment of the shearing machine hydraulics. Noise control of secondary sources was also investigated. A method of reducing full or empty stage conveyor noise (and continuous miner conveyor noise) by 5 to 10 dBA was demonstrated through isolation techniques. Underground mine durability testing, however, is yet to be demonstrated.

Mining activities belong to human history, they are lost in the mists of time. They usually impact on large portions of the territory, both directly (exploitation areas and logistic activities directly related to exploitation) and indirectly (exploited material handling, processing and storage areas). As a result, at the end of mine life cycle, dismissed areas usually cannot be directly re-utilized without efficient and well addressed rehabilitation actions. Main goal of the proposed approach was to analyze the results obtained when a set of procedures, based on the collection and the analysis of remote sensed data, is developed to evaluate the effect of rehabilitation of land contaminated by extractive industry activities and to perform a monitoring and registration of the environmental impact of such operations by the application and the integration of modern information technologies, as Earth Observation (EO) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The study was developed in the framework of the EU-Asia program of the European union (EXTRACT-IT Project-Contract No: CN/ASIA IT&C/006 (89870): Application of Information Technologies for the sustainable management of Extractive industry activities) and it was addressed to three different dismissed mine areas in India, Thailand and China, respectively. The results, in terms of methodologies selected, strategies applied and results obtained, are described with particular reference to Fuxin coal mine area in China.

This Bureau of Mines study, part of a broad program of research in air pollution related to minerals, was conducted to determine the nature and extent of the poisoning of catalysts when used to remove certain air pollutants from exhaust gases. The poisoning examined in this investigation occurs when leaded gasoline is used as a fuel for automotive engines. This research was conducted in cooperation with the Public Health Service. The smog in the Los Angeles area is attributed to the effect of radiant energy on the mixture of hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides found in the atmosphere there. A large portion of the hydrocarbons is believed to originate in the exhaust gases of automobiles. To prevent the escape of these hydrocarbons into the atmosphere catalytic mufflers have been proposed. In principle, these are simple and nonmechanical, consisting of a vessel charged with a catalyst capable of destroying the exhaust hydrocarbons by catalyzing their oxidation. However, these catalysts are severely affected by the particulate matter, mainly in the form of lead sulfate (PbS04), lead oxysulfate (PbS04.Pb0), and Lead chlorobromide (Pb(Cl,Br)2), contained in the exhaust gas. Deposition of lead on the catalyst as PbS04, PbS04, PbS0, and Pb(Cl,Br)2 restricts catalytic activity. As a result,after 20,000 miles of operation the temperature necessary to achieve 50-percent conversion of isopentane in a mixture of 0.2 percent isopentane, 2 percent carbon monoxide and 4 percent oxygen, and the balance nitrogen at 10,000 hourly space velocity has risen from 400° C. to 500° C. even with a catalyst taken from the exit portion of the catalyst bed. The rest of the catalyst was more severely affected. Therefore, it would appear that operation for 20,000 miles is near the limit for a catalyst.

From time to time, one of the authors has had occasion to investigate the graphitizing reaction and has published the results mainly as discussion' of the work of other investigators. In view, therefore, of the diversity of both observations and interpretation, it seemed well to attempt, a revision of the entire subject in the Research Laboratory of the National Malleable Castings Co. The work consisted of a careful study of a single, impure, iron-carbon alloy. The material, which may be considered typical low-carbon white cast iron of the malleable industry, was an air-furnace iron of the following composit,ion: carbon 2.30 per cent., silicon 1.20 per cent., manganese 0.29 per cent., phosphorus 0.156 per cent., sulfur 0.048 per cent. The freezing range extended from 1213' to 1132' C., the latter figure agreeing with Gontermann's data.2 We have attempted to define the equilibrium diagram of this alloy, in the stable condition as related to the mctastable diagr,aui,- from a temperature somewhat below the euteetic freezing point to a temperature l>clow Arl and for a graphitic-carbon content from practically notliing to the original total rarbon of the specimen (see Fig. 6). The use of mining tailings-based geopolymer binder as a substitute for cement can be an interesting alternative to the problem of final disposing of large volumes of them. Indeed, mining tailings have a high silica content, which makes them suitable for geopolymerization. The tailings samples contain Cu, Pb, Zn, As, Sb, Cd and Bi, mainly. X-ray diffraction results show that the tailings are composed of quartz, SiO2 (81%). Geopolymerized tailing samples (GTPS) were obtained by varying the ratio of SiO2/ Al2O3 and SiO2/NaOH. The compressive strength of the GTPS varied between 2 MPa and 8 MPa. The electrical conductivity in the leaching tests varies between 13.91– 16.11 mS/cm2 indicating that ions are present in the solution. However, the pH = 10.5 indicates that acidity is not being generated. The element that mostly leaches is iron. The highest percentage of leaching is observed for cadmium (69%) and chromium (93%). The concentrations of elements are under the maximum permissible limits for water according to the Peruvian legislation. However, mass transfer leach tests and immersion leach tests must be realized.

Each year more than 400 coal miners are injured (fatal and non-fatal) by rock falling from between or around roof supports. Many of these injuries could be prevented by the installation of roof screen (wire mesh). However, many coal mines may be reluctant to use roof screen because of the added cost. The goal of this study was to determine the potential saving in workers? compensation (WC) premiums that could be achieved due to a reduction in rock fall injuries after roof screening. The WC rate-setting methods utilized by IL and KY were investigated in this study. Using actual data obtained from MSHA, national and state WC bodies and individual insurance companies (e.g. average cost per injury, loss cost rate, number of injuries per year, number of injuries preventable each year with roof screening), hypothetical mines (representing two mine sizes: 67 and 150 employees) were constructed with realistic ranges for estimates of injuries and WC premium costs. Using each state?s actual WC rate-setting formulas, total savings in WC costs after a three-year period were determined. Across both states, savings in WC premiums ranged from 1.8% to 14.6% when injuries were reduced by 10% to 20%. Additionally, an economic analysis was performed for an existing mine consisting of 67 employees. For this mine, the annual cost of a roof screening program was estimated at $240,000. If the screening prevented 13 ?struck by? WC claims over a 3-year period at this mine, the reduction in WC premiums alone could pay for the entire screening program.

Para isso, é importante conhecer os diversos projetos de mandris utilizados nos últimos anos, os maquinários envolvidos na fabricação e reparo desses equipamentos além de estar atualizado quanto às novas tecnologias que poderão ser aplicadas. Para possibilitar o entendimento descrito acima, este material será divido em 3 partes: Projetos SMS de mandris no Brasil; Condições de fabricação e reparo; Novas tecnologias. A SMS possui 58 mandris em operação hoje no Brasil estratificados entre os seus principais clientes, desde linhas de decapagem e laminação a quente até a saída do produto final após os laminadores a frio na galvanização e linhas de pintura e corte. Com isso, é possível estabelecer uma análise técnica do desempenho de cada equipamento e sobressalente de forma bem estruturada. Esse é o principal objetivo desse trabalho.

O parafuso Tirefond é um importante componente da via permanente ferroviária. Ele é um componente de fixação responsável por fixar a placa de apoio que, por sua vez, garante a estabilidade dos trilhos. Este componente é comumente fabricado no Brasil por processos de conformação mecânica a quente de aços baixo carbono. Entretanto, com o aumento da carga transportada por eixo de locomotiva nos últimos anos, este componente tem falhado de forma recorrente em serviço. Com o objetivo de entender os efeitos dos filetes do parafuso sobre o comportamento mecânico do componente, este trabalho apresenta um estudo sobre a susceptibilidade do parafuso à concentração de tensões sob carregamento estático. Análises químicas por espectrometria de emissão óptica, análises microestruturais por microscopia óptica, ensaios de tração e dureza foram realizados. Por meio da aplicação de modelos computacionais, foi possível determinar a distribuição de tensões ao longo do parafuso, assim como entender as principais causas destas falhas recorrentes. Fazendo-se uso de modelos matemáticos de mecânica de fratura, associados a simulações computacionais de carregamento estático, foram propostas modificações no projeto original do parafuso que prometem melhorar o seu desempenho em serviço.

No processo de beneficiamento mineral, a moagem é o último estágio da etapa de cominuição de minérios responsável pela redução das partículas à liberação do mineral a ser concentrado nos processos subsequentes. Um problema presente nesse processo é a moagem em excesso do material, que aumenta a potência consumida na moagem, dificulta a recuperação das partículas muito pequenas nas etapas de concentração e prejudica a operação de filtragem do processo de pelotização por entupimentos ocasionados pelo material mais fino do que o especificado. Para melhorar o desempenho da moagem e reduzir seu custo operacional, se faz necessário estudar estratégias de controle adequadas que controlem melhor as diversas variáveis existentes nesse processo. Nesse sentido, o objetivo desse trabalho foi utilizar um simulador de circuito de moagem com o intuito de comparar o desempenho da planta sendo controlada por controle clássico (PID), que é amplamente utilizado em circuitos de moagem, e por controle preditivo por modelo (MPC), que é aplicado em uma camada acima dos PIDs. Foi possível concluir que o circuito de moagem sendo controlado por MPC obtém melhor desempenho do que o PID, possibilitando trabalhar com as variáveis mais próximas de seus limites ótimos de operação.

Ladies and gentlemen, I appreciate this opportunity to be with you, and to share my outlook on the future of Federal coal leasing. I'm told that you wanted the best speaker on this subject in the world. Perhaps it's a reflection of these trying financial times, but I'm glad you finally agreed to settle for the best speaker your budget would afford. I have been asked to give you some insight on the status of Federal coal leasing, and how the budget problems facing the Department will affect the coal program. So I've polished up my crystal ball, and I'll try to give you a peek at the future. Before I do that, however, let me first go back in time - to when this Administration took office in 1981. We had a coal program then, after a hiatus of ten years. But that program was untested and - for reasons well known to all of you - did not work well in practice once we began operating the program. We went back to the drawing board and redesigned the program so that it can do what it is intended to do. We've made the program more predictable. That means that when future lease sales are scheduled, those sales will be reflective and reactive to the need to lease coal. On February 26, Secretary Hodel unveiled a framework for resumption of Federal leasing program activities, ending a more than two-year suspension of regional coal sales. The new program will provide the opportunity to satisfy market demand for acquiring and developing new leases, assure the government of fair market value for its coal reserves, and provide a stable supply of coal for this country's energy needs. The new program grew out of the Department's response to recommendations of the Linowes Commission and the Office of Technology Assessment, coupled with a supplemental environmental study. The Linowes Report, issued in 1984, contained 36 recommendations and three Judgments on leasing levels, tract selection, sale procedures, appraisal methods, key statutory and related factors, and organization and management of the leasing program. Major changes in the new leasing program reflect these concerns. We have developed a definition for captive tracts and devised procedures to appraise their value to the adjacent coal or mine owner. Other steps include a coal lease appraisal guide which describes our appraisal methodology and is available to the public. Improvements have also been made in the gathering of lease assignment information to help in estimating the value of potential lease tracts. To improve market analysis, a three-tiered system will be used to ensure that steps of the lease sale decision process are undertaken in the context of coal supply and demand. Regional Coal Teams will thus have the advantage of long range, regional and tract specific market studies to help them determine whether sufficient demand is expected first to warrant the initiation of activity planning, then to set regional leasing levels, and finally to actually offer specific tracts for lease sale. Sale procedures will also be improved in many ways to encourage competition, improve the chances for receiving adequate bids, and to evaluate whether bids represent fair market value. We made additional modifications to the program in response to the OTA recommendations. Regional Coal Teams have been given a larger role in recommending key decisions concerning the amounts of coal to be studied and the actual selection and scheduling of tracts for lease sale. These recommendations will be accepted unless the Secretary can cite an overriding national interest factor, or a governor's request to modify the recommendations. Smaller, more frequent sales will be held, to better judge market conditions and prevent over- or under-leasing. Public participation guidelines have been written, to document all opportunities for the public to comment at various stages in the planning process. We also decided that resource management plans prepared after the passage of FLPMA in 1976 must be completed, in order for a new round of lease sale planning to begin. The BLM will also beef up its procedures for consulting with affected Federal agencies during the planning process, to assure that the purposes and values of those agencies are considered and factored into land use decisions. To assure consistent use of an adequate data base in coal lease decision-making, Regional Coal Teams will develop standards and guidelines for data adequacy, and document the use of these standards. These procedures will also be applied to the unsuitability criteria screening process. Thus, the new leasing system announced by Secretary Hodel: is fully responsive to recommendations made by the Linowes Commission and the Office of Technology Assessment for improving environmental planning and fair market value procedures; gives the regional coal teams a major say in determining leasing levels, and on the timing,

Among the procedures developed by the Germans for providing the tonnage of iron powder needed to make rotating bands for artillery shells is the use of a ceramic tunnel kiln, not only for finishing the reduction of centrifugal powders but also for making so-called "brickyard sponge iron," which, after crushing and grinding, seems to yield a product suitable for powder-metallur- gical purposes. The final report issued jointly by the German Powder-Metallurgical Society (DPG) and the Chemical-Metallurgical Branch of the Research Depart- ment of the Metallgesellschaft, Inc. (ZFC of MG) gives the available details of this procedure, which may be regarded as a further development of the process in commercial use since 1911 at a ceramic plant in Hoeganaes, Sweden. The Bureau of Mines' wartime development of the Hoeganaes process also cul- minated in the adaptation of ceramic tunnel kilns for carrying out the solid- carbon reduction of iron ores, and comparison with the German technique should further advance the art. This information circular is issued as a supplement to Bureau of Mines reports of investigations Nos. 3819,2 3822, 3841,2 and 4271, on brick- yard sponge iron and is based on four German reports entitled "Making Iron. Considerable borehole investigation work has been completed at a proposed site at Sellafield in Cumbria, supplemented by seismic surveys, other geophysical sensing and geological mapping. The focussing of investigation on the rock mass itself will be achieved by means of the planned underground rock characterisation facility, giving access to depths of about 800 m in the strong, low-permeability basement rocks of the Borrowdale Volcanic Group. Characterisation work undertaken during the sinking phase and interaction with continuing surface-based exploration and monitoring should permit a firmer assessment of the long-term safety of a repository. Key considerations in the choice of a design for the repository include the waste handling method, underground inlet cell, underground vaults, vault environment and environmental effects

Two of the problems long associated with the complete extraction of level pillars in the wide ore bodies of Broken Hill have been: (1) The high cost of maintaining level gangways through areas of slow subsidence to provide adequate trucking roads for the transport of sand filling; and (2) The difficulty and high cost of completely filling depleted areas. This paper deals with the experiments conducted to devise an apparatus for transporting, with the aid of compressed air, sandfill from the underground sand passes to the stopes and describes the sand blower which has been developed. This apparatus has to a large degree overcome the difficulties and removed much of the hazard associated with the rapid extraction of level pillars.Special attention is drawn to the sizing analysis of the sand and to the fact that it is not dry material.
