Disposal of waste syringes in a safe and eco-friendly way has been an issue of considerable scale for decades. The generated amount of waste syringes has escalated with the rapid growth in population and wide acceptance towards single-use medical devices. Some hospitals have their own on-site incinerators ,but recent tightening of air quality regulations and landfill levies led to the closure of manyon-site incinerators. The solution to this problem implicates the development of an environmentally-sound method that would employ these waste materials. This work investigates a thermodynamic modelling approach for incineration treatment of waste plastic syringes in Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steelmaking. Mass balance was obtained from HSC Chemistry thermochemical package. The results indicate that the rate of iron oxide reduction in the slag is higher when coke is partially replaced by waste plastic syringes. Furthermore, the amount of dust and stack gas emission was reduced by around 0.4% and 1.25% respectively by replacing 20%-weight of pure coke with waste plastic syringes. The study demonstrates part of the coke can be successfully replaced by waste plastic syringes in electric arc furnace to provide additional energy from combustion without affecting the main process.

The Ispat Mexicana SA de CV (IMEXSA) pelletising plant is located at Lazaro Cardenas on the west coast of Mexico. It is the primary source of feed stock for the adjacent direct reduction (DR) plants and steelmaking facilities. The initial design of the pellet plant began in 1981 for 3 Mtpa of DR grade pellets using local concentrate received by pipeline.' Several construction delays, an ownership change, and a decision to use imported concentrates delivered in 60 000 to 90 000 tonnes ship cargoes required flowsheet modifications and additions. The design concepts are described for the plant which includes concentrate regrind to final pelletising particle size.

La lixiviación con cianuro es el proceso utilizado por la industria minera para extraer oro y plata. El cianuro es un compuesto tóxico para la mayoría de los organismos vivos. Sin embargo, muchos microorganismos son capaces de tolerarlo e incluso degradarlo. En ese sentido, el texto caracteriza y analiza la composición de las comunidades microbianas de suelos y aguas contaminadas por residuos de cianuro, producto de la actividad minera en la región La Libertad a través de la metagenómica dirigida al ADNr. De forma que se logró aislar e identificar molecularmente 89 cepas microbianas, como los géneros Pseudomonas, Bacillus y Alcaligenes. Asimismo, la capacidad de degradación del cianuro ha sido establecida en base a pruebas in vitro considerando estas cepas, ya sea individualmente o en consorcios.

With the progressive depletion of known resources of good quality coal and minerals as well as the increasing demand of these minerals by different user industries, the emphasis has been shifted all over the world from selective mining to bulk mining followed by up- gradation to obtain the required quality of concentrate. The column flotation cell is one of the alternatives to reduce the gangue content of fines because of its inherent characteristics viz. easier to operate, low space required, no moving parts etc. A laboratory flotation column is used to conduct experiment. Present work has been undertaken to observe the effect of process variables (gas flow rate, feed/slurry flow rate, and frother concentration) on gas dispersion parameters (gas holdup, bubble surface area flux) in collection zone and to explore the effect of feed (slurry) inlet orientations and gas flow rate on column?s metallurgical performance. The effects of solid particle concentration, size and type (hydrophobic and hydrophilic) of solid on gas dispersion parameters have also been investigated. Test work has been performed in a continuously operating Perspex column (10 cm in diameter and 168 cm in height) using coal, sphalerite and dolomite as solid. Gas hold-up has been measured by phase separation method and mean bubble sizes are estimated from a drift flux analysis. The influence of operating parameters on bubble surface area flux has been discussed. It is observed that gas holdup in collection zone is affected by air as well as feed flow rates and also solid?s type. It is also found that addition of solid decreases the gas holdup and rate of decrease in gas holdup increases when solid concentration increases and particle size increases. Increase in gas flow rate increases recovery in collection zone due to increase in number of bubbles per unit volume of the column. From the experimental results it is evident that cross-current orientation of feed inlet shows slightly better metallurgical performance compared to other orientations. Na conjuntura atual, o foco dos produtores de aço tem se voltado fortemente para a otimização dos recursos e do tempo. O AOD é um convertedor de aços inoxidáveis. A intensa agitação do banho obtida pela lança de topo e injeção de gases por ventaneiras geram projeções ao longo do processo com formação e acúmulo de cascões na parte interna do cone superior. O excesso de cascão prejudica as operações de carregamento e vazamento das corridas. Visando reduzir o acúmulo de cascão, foi desenvolvido para o AOD da Aperam South America, a partir do conceito da lança Slagless um módulo de pós-combustão. Os furos de passagem de oxigênio deste módulo ficam posicionados na região onde se alojam as projeções de metal e escória. Os resultados iniciais obtidos com a Slagless Clean Up desenvolvida mostram uma evolução na qualidade da limpeza da boca do AOD, facilitando a operação de carregamento do forno. Ao longo do período foram feitas alterações na abertura dos furos de pós-combustão para adequação das vazões de sopro. O projeto, agora já na sua fase de conclusão, deverá passar por ajustes na quantidade e na distribuição dos furos do módulo de pós-combustão.

The leaching of copper from a printed circuit board (PCB) and the electrodeposition of copper from a cuprous solution in ammoniacal alkaline solutions were examined in order to develop an energy-saving hydrometallurgical process for copper recovery from electronic scrap. In the leaching experiments, copper in the PCB was oxidized by Cu(II), and Cu(I)-ammine complex ions were formed. The copper(I)-ammine complex slightly depressed the leaching rate, while Cu(II)?ammine markedly enhanced it. During the electrodeposition experiments, the current efficiency of copper deposition was approximately 100% in the current density range of 200 to 1000 Am-2. The electrodeposition of copper from the Cu(I)-ammine complex solution favored the production of plates rather than powders.

The dissolution behavior of gold in ammoniacal solutions at 75°C has been investigated. The variables investigated include concentration of lixiviants, pH of the solution and various oxidants. The anodic dissolution of gold was studied in the absence of oxidants using the potentiodynamic polarization technique. The cathodic reaction of oxidants was studied on a platinum electrode. Tafel polarization tests were also performed to determine the dissolution rate. The overall dissolution of gold in ammoniacal solutions was examined using a mixed potential theory. A comparative study on the role of cupric am mine, oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, sodium hypochlorite as oxidants for the dissolution of gold in ammoniacal solutions has been carried out.

THE chief difficulty in determining oxygen in steels is its tendency to form a variety of compounds. Almost every element, found as an ingredient in steels, maybe expected to be present as an oxide. Some of these oxides have widely differing properties, and consequently behave differently when attempts are made to reduce them by the vacuum fusion method. As I pointed out in a paper published in the Transactions of the A.S.S.T., Vol. 20, No. 1, many experimenters are spending considerable time and effort in attempting to deter¬mine the degree of completeness of the above reactions, and hold different opinions on the matter. In studying this subject the following table, taken from Hodgman and Lange's "Handbook of Chemistry and Physics" may be used as a guide.

Mire No. 4 is located in the Swanzy district, in the southern end of the Marquette range, about 3 miles from Gwinn, Mich. The Swanzy district is an isolated ore-bearing formation, and Mine No. 4 is at the extreme southeastern end.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated tthhee feasibility of substituting platinum- coated metals for bulk platinum shapes as a means for conserving platinum . Platinum coatings were prepared using four different methods of electrodeposition , then tested and evaluated . In order for platinum coatings to be useful in process environments , they must be thick , adherent , stress - free , and pore - free . The Bureau evaluated direct - current , current reversal , cathode shielding , and pulsed- current plating techniques for producing a pore-free platinum electrodeposit from a molten cyanide bath . Aqueous corrosion tests of Fe - 10Cr substrates coated with approximately 25 μm of platinum showed that pulse plating yielded the most corrosion- resistant and , hence , the most pore -free coatings . The morphology of coating cross sections was in all cases columnar . The average grain size of pulse -plated deposits was independent of thickness , while all other plating techniques produced grains that increased in size as the coatings became thicker . It is believed that the constant grain size in the pulse - plated deposits resulted from better mass transport during the electrodeposition .

Portfolio theory and the Capital Asset Pricing Model (Modigliani and Pogue, 1974) provides an investment decision rationale which takes account of the benefits of diversification in reducing effective risk, but this theory does not consider the financial capability of the firm to survive large losses if they should occur. The LL-curve theory (Wells, 1976) takes the latter consideration into account, but it does not provide for the effects of diversification. This paper pro- poses a general theory to account for both diversification and the financial capacity of the firm to underwrite the investment risks.

This manuscript aimed to examine the impact of operating parameters on the wet grinding of talc in a vertical-type stirred media mill. Within the scope of the research, the effects of operating parameters including media filling ratio, solid mass fraction, grinding media size, and grinding time were studied. The findings were assessed based on the product particle size (d50, d10), surface area (Sw), and energy consumption (Em). As a result of the present research, the following optimum grinding test conditions were determined: 65% media filling ratio, 40% solid mass fraction, 1 mm grinding media size, and 120 min grinding time. After determining the optimum grinding conditions, the Box–Behnken statistical design was used to determine the effect of parameter interactions on the d50 size. The media filling ratio was found to significantly affect the decrease in d50 compared to the other two parameters. Furthermore, the minimum d50 size was also achieved under optimum grinding conditions.

Investment in the ferrous sector between 1981 and 1985 will total about $9 billion, or 7.6% of the state budget for capital assets. The money will primarily go to complete the first stage of the Baoshan Iron and Steel complex and to increase steel production by 3 Mt* (3.3 million st) and seamless tubing by 0.5 Mt (551,000 st). Investment in 1983 will be about $3.5 billion, a 28% increase over 1981. Although data on nonferrous investment is less specific, the Chinese announced early this spring that the country's investment would be 2.6 times greater than the average spent during the previous five year plans. Geological surveying will also be stepped up. The Ministry of Geology and Minerals recently announced it will incorporate a search for metal and mineral resources into its second round of oil and gas surveys. The Sixth Five-Year Plan desig¬nates some actual production targets. Steel is to increase to more than 72 Mt (79.4 million st). The country's production of 10 priority nonferrous metals - aluminum (and bauxite), copper, lead, zinc, nickel, tin, antimony, mercury, magnesium, and titanium - is to increase 12.7%. Top priority is to develop aluminum production. Renewed efforts are to be made to develop gold and silver production and to increase rare earth and rare metal production. By April 1983 when the China Nonferrous Metal Industry Corp. was established, some five months after publication of the Five-Year Plan, the goals for nonferrous development had already been upgraded and changed to include: • development priority status equal to that of coal's; • an increase of more than 150% in the 1985 projected production level for the 10 top nonferrous metals (a move from the Sixth Five-year Plan's production increase of 12.7% to one of 34%); and • modification of the top 10 nonferrous metals list to include tungsten, molybdenum, and rare earths. Aluminum, copper, lead, and zinc maintained primary importance, while mercury, magnesium, and titanium were deleted. It is likely that the modification will be taken one step further and titanium will be substituted for antimony. China has already indicated its intentions to stabilize rather than expand its antimony industry, while press reports play up the titanium industry's importance to the country's development. In addition, the China Nonferrous Metal Industry Corp. announced that it expects to register a progressive annual increase of 4% in foreign currency earnings through export. China's nonferrous development efforts, therefore, appear two-pronged. First, the country's efforts will be directed toward self-sufficiency in its four major process and primary metals - aluminum, copper, zinc, and lead - and a number of other nonferrous metals that are in increasing demand by its light industry sector. At present, 96% of China's non¬ferrous consumption is composed of aluminum, copper, lead, and zinc. Substantial portions of that must be imported to meet rising demand. Second, efforts will concentrate on those metals that can be developed the fastest and are in "urgent demand" on the international market. Metals such as tungsten, tin, molybdenum, titanium, nickel, and rare earths will be given freer use of foreign capital and technology to increase production levels and raise quality. Examples of some projects in the area include upgrading the country's carbide industry and developing new high speed and tool steels to meet international standards. Bentonite and newly discovered deposits of sepiolite, saponite, and hectorite are now being processed and marketed from the Amargosa Valley of Nevada. All of these deposits are large. The bentonite has been known for decades and is the whitest known. The only other sepiolite deposit is in Spain. The only other commercial hectorite deposit is at Hector, California. No other saponite deposit is known. All the components except bentonite are hydrous magnesium silicates. The bentonite is mixed layer Na-Ca. All the materials have characteristics unique to their locale and type, such as high yield point for drilling muds and liquid suspending agents. The sepiolite has geothermal stability. Figure 1.

Grinding and flotation operations deliver better-optimized performance when they are monitored and controlled in terms of the minerals they process rather than as elemental assays that we usually refer to. Mesh of grind (MoG), liberation, floatability, grade and recovery etc. are more directly related with the minerals and their characteristics rather than the elemental assays. Hence, online analyzers only provide the status for the grade and recovery of metals and not the direction for the enhanced performance. Central Research and Development Laboratory (CRDL) and Rampura Agucha Mine (RAM) mill section of Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL) jointly undertook various survey campaigns in the grinding and flotation process streams. Grinding circuit surveys involved systematic collection of representative samples from different grinding circuit streams under stabilized conditions for monitoring particle size and process mineralogy details across individual grinding circuit. Flotation survey campaigns included study of fort-nightly / monthly composites of un-ground flotation feed, lead concentrate, lead tailing, zinc concentrate and final tailing samples for size distribution details in the 150 ? 38 micron range, chemical analysis and mineral characterization through optical microscope. This work details the investigations results and their implications on beneficiation performance. Grinding circuit survey campaigns supported the task for modifying the originally installed configuration of hydrocyclones, to limit recovery losses due to excess grinding of soft galena and related silver minerals. Flotation plant surveys helped in adjusting flotation circuit process parameters to reduce loss of liberated and floatable galena and sphalerite grains into their respective tailing streams. Experiments investigating the treatment of a ground wood white water waste from an Ontario pulp and paper mill by an HVCB coal are reported. Adsorption capacity for the waste, with a soluble COD contribution of 2,100 mg/I, amounted to 0.17 per cent, by weight, of the Nova Scotia coal used. Percolation of the white water waste through a coal bed indicated that soluble COD is removed. For finely ground coals, over 90 per cent of the suspended solids in the waste are retained on the coal. Plugging of the coal bed is rapid, so that any treating process using filtration would have to renew the surface of the bed frequently.

All bituminous-coal mines, by the nature of their product and inherent gassy tendencies, are subject to explosions or mine fires. The evolution from large, hand-loading sections employing numerous men and containing open-type equipment, lights, and nonpermissible explosives to small, concentrated mechanical sections with but few well-supervised men utilizing modern preventive equipment has not altered this premise. Mine catastrophes such as Centralia and New Orient No. 2, as well as recent disasters of less magnitude, have refuted the trend of thinking that modern equipment, will prevent or localize explosions and prevent widespread or loss of life.

The nature and orientation of joints in rock strata affect the damage pattern under explosive loading. Most of the limestone deposits in India are found with severity of joints. Categorically, these joints may have variable orientations such as dipping out of the blast face, inside the face, horizontally or having strike parallel to the face. The damage pattern under the varying category of orientation will be different. Accordingly, a numerical model in Ansys-Explicit Dynamics was prepared to compare the damages of rock mass under different joint orientations. The physical nature of a joint reflects frictional and stiffness behaviour. Accordingly, the damages have been compared under bonded and frictional nature of joints. The output damage pattern from the model has been validated on the basis of blastability index proposed by Lilly. Different limestone mines in India show different nature of jointing in their rock strata. Accordingly, the blasting outputs from three different limestone mines, viz. Rawan limestone mine, Sagmania and Birhauli limestone mine and Injepalli limestone mine, have been compared along with their blast design parameters and the nature of joint. The comparative results show that the closely spaced horizontal joints support maximum in burden movement and rock fragmentation due to blast.

With modern exploration techniques, it seems likely that an increasing number of the orebodies to be found in the future will be under alluvial fans or valley fill. As a result, a larger proportion of open pit mines will be confronted with the necessity for removal of substantial quantities of alluvial overburden; whereas in the past, for the most part, the open pit mine operator has dealt mainly with hard rock. If this proves to be the case, methods, equipment, and costs for alluvium stripping will become an increasingly important factor in open pit mine planning. Several operations are now faced with this situation, and various methods and equipment are used. At Pima Mining Company's operation the stripping ratio is in the range of 6/1 Well over half of the stripping volume is alluvium. The alluvium is removed almost entirely by carryalls hauling direct to a waste dump. Some removal has been accomplished by shovel and truck operation; more will be done by this means in the future. At American Smelting and Refining Company's neighboring .Mission Mine, nearly all alluvium removal is by large shovels and, trucks. U. S. Borax's Boron operation is accomplishing alluvium removal with carryalls but has been investigating other methods and equipment. The various operations in the Gas Hills Uranium District in Wyoming are stripping mainly with carryalls, although some small draglines are employed. The M. A. Hanna Company in the Mesabi Range employs large draglines and conveyor systems for removal of glacial fill. Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines in Northern Rhodesia strips overburden with a large excavating wheel and conveyor system. There are no doubt other open pit operations with which the writer is not familiar, that are handling large quantities of alluvial overburden.
