The western united States is not usually noted for the production of fluorspar; however, many significant fluorspar districts do occur in the Rocky Mountain region and constitute a resource of sizable dimension and major potential. This is particularly true within the area of the West served by the rail lines of the Union Pacific Railroad (see Figure 1). Fluorspar deposits near the Union Pacific have produced over 1.3 million tons of finished fluorspar products from 2.3 million tons of ore. Approximately 80% of this production was of acid-grade and 20% of metallurgical-grade fluorspar. Production of ceramic-grade was negligible. Through the years substantial production has come from eight mining districts. Five of these have produced metallurgical-grade and three acid-grade. The best-known fluorspar producing area in the West is the Jamestown Mining District. It was one of the first producers of fluorspar in the western United States and is estimated to have produced over 500,000 tons of finished fluorspar from over a million tons of ore. The district encompasses approximately 36 square miles in central Boulder County, Colorado, about 9 miles northwest of the City of Boulder. THE object of this paper is to present the various facts that l1ave been revealed during lengthy investigations into the performance of all types of ropes on different hoisting installations. It then goes on to suggest means by which most of these findings could be usefully employed to obtain more economical rope lives with increased safety. The Vicksburg mining property lies in the southeastern foothills of the Star mining district, Beaver County, Utah (fig. 1). Within a few miles of the Vicksburg mine, lying in a semicircle from south to northwest, are such past producers of lead-silver ores as the Moscow, Hoosier Boy, Red Warrior, Wild. Bill, Harrington-Hickory, and many others. Farther to the north, in the San Francisco district, are the famous Horn Silver and Cactus mines. The formation at the Vicksburg property consists of interbedded limestone, shale, and dolomitic limestone. These beds have been metamorphosed by the intrusion of irregular masses of porphyritic igneous rocks grading from quartz-monzonite to granodiorite. Ore deposition is in north-trending fissures of sheeted zones, contact metamorphic in type. These depositions were subsequently altered to gossan. A preliminary investigation of the Vicksburg property involving surveying, mapping, and sampling was made by W. A. Young and F. H. Gunnell, engineers of the Bureau of Mines, in the fall of 1946. As a result of the investigation, a project was set up to investigate the possibility of ore occurrence at greater depth on the fissures under the mineralized zone by diamond drilling.

"IntroductionThe evaporation losses of gasoline in the refinery, can be reduced by proper methods of refinery construction and operation. When gasoline evaporates slowly, as when stored in tanks that are not vapor tight, the most volatile part evaporates first, so that the remaining liquid in not only less in volume, but is also lower in quality. In some,evaporation changes the characteristics of the product so much that it must be reblended to meet trade specifications.Refiners are, therefore, greatly interested in the various appliances and methods used to reduce these losses. In the past this interest has been directed largely to storage tanks, probably because evaporation from tanks is more readily observed than losses during other refinery operations. As tests by the Bureau of Mines on evaporation of gasoline from small storage tanks had indicated that the losses during the various stages of refining might be equal to or greater than those of standing storage, a survey was during the spring and early summer months of 1924 in a large number of refineries in the Mid-Continent field. In order to enable the refiner to select the results of those tests that conform most nearly to the conditions that he has to meet, tests were conducted at various stages of refining, as follows: (1) Randown tanks, (2) (agitators), (3) filling tank cars, (4) storage of refined products, and (3) miscellaneous handling. The results are presented in this paper."

"INTRODUCTION As one of the most pressing and important political debates of this century, climate change has captured global attention and is forcing governments to take action towards decreasing GHG and carbon emission levels below what was previously thought to be necessary. With the ever-increasing price of diesel fuel accompanied by the popular topic of carbon taxes and greenhouse gas emissions, the mining industry is looking to industry specialists for assistance. The benefits of a no-idle policy reach far beyond carbon reduction and fuel savings, ranging from decreased maintenance to increased engine life. With products like battery powered A/C systems and diesel-fired heaters, going no-idle is easier today than ever before. With both systems being manufactured to withstand the harsh environments of the mining industry, the end user will see a seamless change from conventional, inefficient belt-driven systems to future, stand-alone mobile equipment HVAC. THE HISTORY OF GHGS AND CLIMATE CHANGE In 1896 Svante Arrhenius first claimed that the combustion of fossil fuels may eventually result in enhanced global warming, but not until 1955 did Gilbert Plass draw global attention to global warming by summarizing that adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere would intercept infrared radiation and thus warm the earth. Then in the early 1960’s Charles Keeling developed modern technology to produce concentration curves for atmospheric CO2 (Figure 1). In 1988 the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was founded by the United Nations after acknowledgement of a rising global annual temperature. The IPCC consists of over 2500 scientific and technical experts from more than 60 countries, and because climate change could not be solved by a single country, the Kyoto Protocol was negotiated in 1998 requiring all participating countries to reduce their GHG emissions by at least 5% from the 1990 levels. The Protocol was signed by 186 countries in 2001 (since then several countries have retreated from the agreement, including the United States)."

The relative significance of corrosive and erosive wear in magnetic taconite grinding is examined. The influence of different types of aeration (nitrogen, air, and oxygen) on ball wear was established for mild steel and high carbon low alloy steel balls. Ball wear data from dry and wet grinding tests are compared with those obtained in the presence of an organic solvent that does not promote electrochemical corrosion. Marked ball grinding tests and electrochemical measurements involving ball material and magnetite electrodes indicate that contribution from oxygen toward wear (corrosive wear) is relatively small, and abrasive wear appears to be significant. Rheological properties of the slurry appear to have an important bearing on the abrasive wear of grinding balls.

This paper describes the operations of the St. Joe Mining & Milling Co. in Boulder County, Colo., as of June 1936. Later a brief visit was made to the mine in September 1936; information obtained at that time has also been recorded. The company operates a gold mine, the Grand Republic, in the Sugar Loaf mining district; a 100-ton flotation mill in Lefthand Canyon near Gold Hill; and a custom sampling punt, the Boulder Ore Sampling Works, at Boulder, Colo.

"Nanocrystalline silver bulk material with average grain size of 20.3 nm was prepared by warmvacuum- compaction method. The as-prepared nanocrystalline silver was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calarmeutry analysis (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), and 6157 type Electrometer test, respectivily. The experimental results show that the average grain size and microstrain of the nanocrystalline silver are 20.3 nm and 0.088%. The melting point and melting enthalpy are 1228.7 Kand 82.34 Jig, which are lower than that of coarse-grained silver by 6 Kand 22.6 Jig, respectively. The electrical resistivity of nanocrystlline silver increases with higher temperature when the range of temperature is between 233K and 293K. The electrical resistivity at 293 K is 1.475xlO -7 Q·m, which is higher than that of coarsegrained silver by a factor of 9.IntroductionN anocrystaline ( nc) materials or nano structured ( ns) materials are three-dimensional (3 D) bulk materials with average grain size typically smaller than 100 nm. Ne materials have been of great interest for their unique properties, such as superior tensile strength [1-2], high microhardness [3- 4], superplasticity [5-6], magnetically quasi-isotropic [7-8] , and so on, making them one of the most promising nano-scale materials with wide applications. Ne materials with average grain size of 5-10 nm were firstly fabricated by Gleiter et al. [9] in 1980s, using inert gas condensation (IGC) method. Unfortunately, the large surface to volume ratio creates a high surface energy component in the total free energy of the system and results in a metastable state in the materials. Therefore, due to the signfica nt disordered grain boundary regions, nanomaterials are thermally unstable and are subjected to a strong driving force for grain growth. The grain growth even occurred at room temperature [10].The conflict or deviation of measured date, e.g. strength, microhardness, thermal stability, partly due to the grain boundary ratio or the distribution of grain size, and partly derived from imperfections such as voids and microcracks while earlier processing techniques are known to result in incomplete dens:fication [11-12]. Therefore, the higher quality samples produced in subsequently years still show such a general trend."

Certainly, laboratory tests will not be able to substitute completely industrial ones, but allow reducing the amounts of the industrial tests, that vastly reduces the cost of technological forecast and preparation of data for projection.Calculation of the potential indexes of mineral technology (mass yields and the metal content in products) is fulfilled on the base of results of measurements of the mineralogical liberation parameters using special formulas.The quality of the concentrate ßc = a + ?l • ?s • ?i (ßt - a) can be achieved on a level of the theoretical metal content of a mineral - ßt only if coefficients of mineral processing, of liberation ?l and selectivity ?s of grinding, effectiveness of separation, will reach 1 (a - metal content of the row ore).Increase ?l by overgrinding automatically decrease ?s, and only by destroying of particles of ore along surfaces of accreting of minerals (?i = 1) and when values of all three coefficients will aim to 1, then ßc ? ßt.The degree of liberation of the useful mineral is the ratio of mass of free grains of the useful mineral in the product to general mass of the same mineral in this product. Cracking is one of the concerns cited by owners of structures adjacent to construction or mine blasting. During the past decade a large number of measurements have documented the low level of crack response produced by typical, ground motions compared to those produced by climatological effects. These data support the observation that there is a level below which ground motions do not cause even cosmetic cracking. As with all new findings, these crack response measurements need to be thoroughly investigated for all possible alternative interpretations. Among these alternatives is that uncracked locations are more affected than cracked locations. This paper presents measurements to shed light on the influence of existing cracks and the response of uncracked, but weak locations. Blast and weather induced responses of cracked and uncracked areas of gypsum wall board are compared in two structures: one near a surface coal mine in Indiana, the other near a limestone quarry in Florida. The ground motions that excited one of the structures were unusual in that the dominant excitation frequencies of 5 Hz were near the structure’s natural frequency and amplitudes exceeded 0.7 ips (18mm/s).

[In 1922 a conference of representative coal-mine operators, cable manufacturers, mining-machine manufacturers, and representatives of the United States Bur eau of Mines vas held at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station, regarding suitable cables for use with permissible raining machines. This conference recommended that the Bureau investigate rubber-sheathed trailing cables in order to obtain specifications for tests leading to approval for rise with mining machines. Effective until such time as an investigation could be made, the bureau asked the several manufacturers of approved mining machines to recommend cables for wise with their machines. In general the Cables recommended tentatively approved. Arrangements for the tests were completed in 1927. Concentric-type cables were investigated first, and Reports of Investigations, Serial No. 2909, covering the tests, was issued in January, 1929.]

This is one of a series of papers published by the Bureau of Mines on mining and milling methods and costs. The Tennessee-Schuylkill Corporation, Chloride, Ariz., mines and mills a lead-zinc ore containing gold, silver, and a small amount of copper. The mill products are lead and zinc concentrates that are shipped to smelters. The company was the second largest producer of lead and zinc in Arizona in 1937 and was seventh in gold production. Operations discussed are those being conducted at the mine in October 1938 and are representative of the complete operating period from 1936 to date.

PRICE changes in competing fuels in the last three decades have reflected the changes in the consuming habits of the people of the United States. Prior to World War 11 the importance of fuel oil and fuel gas increased almost constantly while the relative importance of both bituminous and anthracite coal decreased. During this same prewar period coal prices increased to a much greater extent than oil prices. In fact, in many years, oil prices declined and in most cases are now no higher than they were back in 1925-26. During the war natural economic trends were entirely upset because of the tremendous petroleum requirements of the Army and Navy. Under these conditions many industrial plants were converted to the use of coal and the new installations in home heating and industrial plants of all kinds which might have used oil were practically eliminated. THE science of topography deals with the various natural and physical features of the earth's surface. These features are determined by the manifold constructive and destructive processes of nature, and their many diverse forms and characteristicsare dependent primarily upon geologic structure. Thus it is that a close relationship exists between the rocks of a region and the topographic features of the lJountry wherein they occur. Material handling in surface mines accounts for around 50% of the operational cost. Optimum truck dispatching plays a critical role in the reduction of this operational cost in truck and shovel surface mines. Researchers in this field have presented several mathematical models to solve the truck dispatching problem optimally. However, a critical survey of the literature has shown that three significant drawbacks exist in the available truck dispatching models. The published models underestimate the importance of the interaction between truck fleet, shovel fleet, and the processing plants. They also disregard goals set by strategic-level plans. Moreover, none of the available models account for the uncertainty associated with the input parameters. In this paper we present a new truck dispatching model that covers all of these drawbacks, using a fuzzy linear programming method. The performance of the developed model was evaluated through implementatin in an active surface mining operation. The results show a significant improvement in production and fleet utilization.

World production of asbestos is estimated to be at a current level of almost 3.5 million tons, having more than doubled in the past ten years. A substantial part of the increase has been due to a rapid expansion in the Soviet Union. Production from that country during 1964 is estimated at 1.5 million tons and, as a consequence, Russia has displaced Canada as the leading world producer. Although traditionally the asbestos mining industry has been centered near Sverdlovsk in the Urals, two new producing areas have been under development for some time. It is expected that a new mine will be in operation in 1965 near Kiembi, Kazakhstan, some 300 miles south of Sverdlovsk, and an- other mine at Aktrovak in Tannu-Tuva, west of Lake Baikal. These developments will provide a significant increase in the production capability of Russia. Although internal consumption is expected to increase with the addition of new asbestos- cement producing facilities now under construction in Russia, there is some speculation that exports will also increase.

Variations in the characteristics of bentonite, magnetic taconite concentrate and system water have been examined to show their effects on pelletizing. Chemical methods have been tried to alter the clay or the system water so as to obtain pellets with desired properties. Those methods include ion exchange and the use of supplemental binders (organic and inorganic).

En este sentido, el presente trabajo señala los geoindicadores como herramientas de monitoreo de presas de relaves -en tanto el estudio de estas características ha posibilitado discusiones al respecto de la seguridad de estas estructuras, así como propuestas de medidas de control.
