Quartz veins from the Martha Hill epithermal gold-silver deposit, Waihi, commonly exhibit crustiform banded textures. Visual differences observed between bands are primarily the result of a 1 to 1500 ¦m variation in quartz grain size. Quartz band textures are dominated by anhedral interlocking quartz mosaics, commonly associated with minor adularia and sulphide phases; these textures are interpreted to be products of amorphous silica crystallisation. The occurrence of rhombic adularia suggests that prolonged boiling influenced parent fluids. In contrast, the presence of coarsely crystalline bands, made up of subhedral to euhedral quartz grains, infers primary crystal growth from solution; evidenced by the occurrence of growth-zoned quartz within these bands. There is a narrow range of 3.3ë in d18Oquartz between maximum and minimum isotopic values for the deposit. Significant overlap in d18Oquartz values are observed between the Martha and Welcome lodes. However, statistically significant and commonly systematic differences do occur between individual bands analysed in most samples. Temperature fluctuations may be the dominant factor responsible for observed inter-band variation.

"The effect of ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) on flotation separation of fluorite from bastnaesite and its selectively depression mechanism on fluorite were studied by single mineral flotation, artificial mixed minerals flotation, solution chemistry analyses, Zeta potential and XPS measurements.The results show that fluorite can be deeply depressed by EDTA while the flotation of bastnaesite is almost unaffected when octanohydroxamic acid (OHA) is used as a collector. The separation index (SI) between bastnaesite and fluorite increases with the dosage of EDTA, SI can be raised from 1.18 to 12.66 when EDTA dosage increases from 0 to 2×10-3mol/L.Solution chemistry analyses show that EDTA is able to convert the Ca(OHA)2 hydrophobic precipitation on fluorite surface to a soluble Ca-EDTA complex but cannot complexly dissolve the Ce(OHA)3 precipitation on bastnaesite surface. Therefore, the Zeta potential of OHA conditioned fluorite can be reduced significantly by EDTA while the reduction degree to Zeta potential of bastnaesite is relatively low. XPS measurement shows that EDTA removes the chemically adsorbed OHA from fluorite surface but has little effect on the adsorbed OHA on bastnaesite surface. As a result, fluorite can be selectively depressed by EDTA in bastnaesite flotation, which behaves an important industrial application prospect in rare earth ore flotation.INTRODUCTIONNowadays, Rare earth elements (shortened as RE) and compounds are of significant importance for a range of rapidly expanding industrial applications including catalysis, metallurgy, renewable energy, and special materials due to their unique electrical, magnetic, optical and chemical properties [1]. The seventeen RE elements, including the lanthanide-group fifteen elements, yttrium and scandium, could be divided into three groups, i.e., light, medium and heavy RE elements based on the different solubility of RE sulfates [2]. Bastnaesite ((Ce,La)CO3), containing approximately 75% REO, is one of the most important light RE minerals [3]. Flotation is the common method to recover basetnaesite [4-6]. Nonetheless, basetnaesite is often associated with calcium-bearing gangue minerals such as fluorite, and the separation of basetnaesite and fluorite by flotation is usually difficult due to their similar surface properties and therefore floatability [7-9]. Therefore, research on high selective flotation reagents of bastnaesite over gangue minerals has attracted a lot of attention [10]."

Past attempts to establish an integrated steel industry on the West Coast of Canada have been unsuccessful for at least three reasons: (a) insufficient reserves of a suit-able iron ore supply; (b) a relatively small local market for iron and steel; and (c) the non-availability of an economical process to produce primary iron on a small scale. Today, the reserves of economically mineable ore deposits are ample to support a steel production of 100,000 to 200,-000 tons per annum. The local market has increased so as to be able to absorb most of this capacity. With-in the next few years, a small integrated steel plant, including the "H-Iron" direct iron ore reduction process for electric furnace charge stock production, will be able to show a profitable operation. The report describes the development of preliminary requirement specifications for standardized operating controls for roof bolting machines used in underground coal mining. According to recent statistics, roof bolting continues to be one of the most hazardous occupations in underground coal mining. The two principal hazards to the roof bolter operator are the machine itself and roof falls during the bolting cycle. The lack of standardization of machine controls is a major contributor to this hazardous situation. Observations of roof bolting operations and discussions with roof bolter manufacturers coupled with detailed analyses of roof bolter control design specifications were performed during this study. Detailed roof bolter operator task analyses, commonality of control analyses, and classical link analyses were also performed. The results of these analyses were then used to produce preliminary requirement specifications for standardized controls.

A comprehensive production research program, now in progress at the Petroleum Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Bartlesville, Okla., includes studies of the displacement of petroleum from sand by detergent solutions. An earlier report (12)2/ presented the results of an extensive research program to determine the value of detergents as floodwater additives. This report presents later results of the detergent-testing program (13, 17). Although water-flooding methods and controls are constantly being improved to increase the production of oil from secondary-recovery operations, considerable crude oil commonly remains.in place after a water flood has been terminated. Therefore, the possibility of improving the efficiency of a waterflood by the use of detergents is of increasing interest. The effects of many substances on the efficiency of water flooding have been investigated in laboratory studies (5, 11, 13, 17, 19, 24). Of the various sub-stances tested, only surface-active agents were consistently effective in removing oil from sand. Results of laboratory studies presented in earlier reports (9, 11, 12, 13) show that many detergent solutions effectively displace petroleum from sand surfaces under varying conditions encountered in centrifuging, manual and mechanical agitation, ultrasonic vibration, and imbibition.

A STATEMENT on this subject by A. D. Turnbull, presented and discussed at the Annual Business Conference of the Metallurgy Division, C.I.M., held in Ottawa on April 22nd 1957, led to creation of a committee "too see if the Metallurgy Division of the C.I.M. can improve this situation". Without discounting the general problems of education and short-ages in other fields, the committee is primarily concerned with deficiencies related to metallurgy. The committee members are: F. R. Archibald, Chairman, A. D. Turnbull, L. E. Djingheuzian, J. U. Mac-Ewan, and L. M. Pidgeon. Following exchange of views among the committee members a general attitude of approach was established and a background of reference material assembled. It is the purpose of this review to acquaint those interested with the reference material, to offer an appraisal of the situation, and to suggest a programme for action by the Metallurgy Division of the C.I.M. Before proceeding with the ?presentation it is fitting to point out that, notwithstanding some rather important developments in public concern for educational matters, as well as changes in the level of activity in the metallurgical industry, the statement (April 1957) by Mr. Turnbull still stands as a sound article of reference.

In April 1957 the Bureau of Mines instituted a reconnaissance of titanium-and zirconium-bearing heavy sandstone deposits in the Four-State area of Utah, Wyoming, New Mexico, and Colorado. This report summarizes the study. Eighty-two deposits or groups of deposits, containing an estimated 27,920,000 tons of titaniferous sandstone, were examined in the Four-State area; 16 in southern Utah, 19 in Wyoming, 33 in New Mexico, and 14 in southwestern Colorado. The 16 deposits examined in Utah contain an estimated 1,043,000 tons with an average grade of 17.98 percent TiO2, 5.67 percent ZrO2, 20.98 percent Fe, and 0.09 percent equivalent Th02. The 19 deposits investigated in Wyoming are estimated to contain 21,873,000 tons of titaniferous sandstone having a weighted grade of 5.22 percent 702, 0.55 percent ZrO2, 24.8 percent Fe, and 0.01 percent equivalent Th02.

The John Fritz Medal was awarded in January, 1917, to Dr. Henry Marion Howe, for his "investigations in metallurgy, especially in the metallography of Iron and Steel." The presentation ceremonies were held in the Auditorium of the United Engineering Societies' Building, New York, on Thursday evening, May 10. Mr. Ambrose Swasey, Chairman of the John Fritz Medal Board of Award, presided, and addresses were delivered by Dr. Rossiter W. Raymond, Secretary Emeritus of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, and Dr. Ira N. Hollis, President of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Professor Albert Sauveur, Chairman of the Board at the time the award was made, presented the medal, and the ceremonies concluded with the response of Dr. Howe.

The use of safe equipment, safeguards, and safe practices in the mining and allied industries should reduce injuries and improve accident experience. The object of this report is to give to the mining industry, especially metal mining, a graphic pictorial description of some of the safeguards, equipment, and practices used and followed in the iron-ore mines of the Lake Superior district. Some of the subject material has been in use or has been established for many years, and some is relatively new. Some of the equipment was purchased commercially, and some was designed by the company employees and constructed in the mine shops. The photographs were taken by the personnel of the Health and Safety Division of the United States Bureau of Mines, primarily for use in the Metal-Mine Accident-Prevention Course of the Bureau of Mines. In general, they are arranged under the following headings or subjects: 1. Accident statistics. 2. Support of ground. 3. Hoisting and haulage. 4. Explosives. 5. Fires, gases, and ventilation.

The continuous personal dust monitor (CPDM) is an essential instrument for working in hazardous environments, is used to monitor real-time coal dust exposure, and is mandated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for underground coal mines. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) found that it is possible for electromagnetic interference (EMI) between a CPDM and a proximity detection system (PDS) to occur. Various approaches have been taken by researchers and manufacturers to address this EMI issue. Administrative controls were recommended to keep the CPDM six inches away from the wearable PDS device. Shielding pouches were made to contain the electromagnetic (EM) emission from the CPDM. Metal shielding was added to major EM emitting components. EMI filtering with large capacitors was introduced to mitigate EMI. Most recently, a novel magnetic-field-cancellation-based approach was developed and achieved remarkable results. In this paper, we provide a comparison between these approaches. The pros and cons of each approach are presented and discussed, so that mining device manufacturers and operators can best evaluate the technology and controls that improve the health and safety of mine workers.

U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel studied the 33,900-acre Silver Peak Range North Wilderness Study Area (NV-060-338), in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The area studied lies between the towns of Silver Peak and Dyer, about 40 miles southwest of Tonopah, in Esmeralda County, Nevada. There are no producing mines in the area studied. However, development of Sunshine Mining Company?s Sixteen-to-One silver-gold mine, located in the Silver Peak mining district near the eastern edge of the study area in the early 19801s, has stimulated recent interest. The Sunshine Mining Company claimed two sites within the study area in 1985. Also, Intermountain Resources, Incorporated, located a group of claims at a prospect along the west side of the study area in the Dyer mining district, and in 1986, began drilling. Other claimants are holding two other claim groups by assessment. At the five currently (1987) held sites, precious metals occurrences are being investigated. There are no patented mining claims or mineral leases in the study area.

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation requested U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) assistance in developing design data for moving lead-zinc-gold tailings from their current location without disrupting the existing chemically stable conditions. This report presents results of USBM work in determining (1) the minimum required time to air dry the tailings to approximately 20 pet moisture under various drying conditions both in the laboratory and in the field, (2) the degree of oxidation or reduction that occurs during drying, (3) the effect of lime or cement addition before drying, and (4) the likely equilibrium conditions of the dried tailings after deposition at the new location. The limited number of tests performed by the USBM in the available time frame established trends in oxidation levels but did not provide absolute statistical validity of data values. All data from drying and oxidation testing are included in appendices to this report.

This is the second in a series of Bureau of Mines reports which de-scribe experiments designed to devise an efficient, economic mechanical fragmentation technique for hard rock. The previous study described the development of the ripper cutting technique to successfully cut hard rock with 3-to 6-in-wide drag cutters. This study was conducted to test the ripper cutting technique at full scale using 9-in-wide drag cutters. The experiments were conducted with a special test device that cut shallow, 6-by 6-ft openings in 9,200-lbf/in2 compressive-strength concrete blocks. The tests showed that ripper cutting can excavate large-scale openings of the type required by the mining industry at a production rate that outperforms the conventional drill-blast technique. Moreover, the system can produce openings of various sizes and shapes, is simple to oper-ate and maintain, and produces very little dust or noise during operation. The system appears to meet all of the criteria for a successful hard-rock mining machine.

Viburnum, located in the foothills of the Ozarks in south-east Missouri, is the site of a modern lead mining and milling operation. Two mines are currently producing a total of 5,000 tons per day and a third mine is in the final development stage, with full production scheduled for late this year (1964). These mines will supply the tonnage required to keep the Viburnum mill operating at a full capacity of 7,000 tons per day for many years. The efficient underground mining operation is completely trackless. Drill jumbos are used to break the ore in a room and pillar method of mining. Transloaders, or St. Joe shovels, and trucks do the loading and hauling. The Viburnum mill has a world-wide reputation as a most efficient operation. This is due to the extensive use of automatic process controls, and labour saving materials handling facilities. O objetivo dessa pesquisa é explicar a corrosão do perfil, através da investigação por MEV, EDS e teste de tração, mostrando a influência do concreto no mesmo, mediante a determinação de suas características mecânicas após o contato. Os resultados mostram difusão dos elementos do concreto no aço, afetando suas propriedades mecânicas através do aumento de limite de resistencia a tração e redução do módulo de elasticidade. Houve também redução na superfície de zinco, mostrando principio de corrosão.

INTRODUCTION THE experimental work reported herein was inspired by the publication of a paper by Grange and Stewart,1 in which it was suggested that at low chromium contents the effect of this element on the [M,] point was greater than at higher chromium contents. It was argued that, if a small increase of chromium in solution in austenite caused a sharp lowering of the [M,] point, it might lead to an explanation of occasional unsolved stress cracking of SAE 52100 during heat treatment. Commercial hardening is carried out at temperatures of incomplete solution, leaving carbides available to enrich the austenite during any inadvertent increase in temperature. Such enrichment of the austenite in chromium content would lower the [ M,] point nearer room temperature where cracking is more likely to occur. Accordingly, it was decided to investigate the effect of chromium, in quantities between o and 2 pct, on the[ M,] point of commercial steels. Fig I summarizes the data available on chromium steels. For purposes of comparison, the [M, ] temperature values were corrected by means of the Grange and Stewart formula§ to (I) Hypoeutectoid compositions: 0.50 pct carbon and 0.80 pct manganese (2) Hypereutectoid compositions: 1.00 pct carbon and 0.35 pct manganese. Only the steels having compositions reasonably close to these corrected values were included, because large adjustments inevitably introduce increased errors such as are experienced in using the formula. The straight lines of Fig I were drawn by the authors. These data obviously do not settle the question of the effect of chromium on the [M,] point, particularly at low chromium contents. While it is fairly well established that chromium causes the [M,] to be lowered when present in quantities of I pct or more, Grange and Stewart1 have suggested that in small amounts (less than I. pct) it is more effective in lowering the[ M,] point, while Klier and Troiano2 have suggested that in small amounts it is less effective in lowering the []M,] point. Payson and Savage3 concur with Klier and Troiano and further suggest that the effect is not linear at these concentrations. Rose and Fischer4 report that small amounts of chromium actually raise the-[M,] point of a 0.20 carbon steel. MATERIAL Two series of 35 lb induction heats were melted for this work, the analyses of which are given in Table I. One series was aimed at 0.50 pct carbon and 0.80 pct manganese with chromium additions in 0.25 pct increments from o to 1.5 pct with a single heat at 2.0 pct Cr. This series was considered necessary because the commercial heat treatment of SAE 52100 does not generally introduce more than about 0.60 pct carbon in solution in the austenite. The high

Definite progress has been made in accident prevention in Illinois during the past few years; the State Department of Mines and Minerals is receiving excellent cooperation from coal companies and employees, the companies are making greater effort to maintain their mines in good condi- tion, and the employees are eliminating more unsafe practices. As a result, some coal companies have made commendable safety records that prove that coal can be mined with a comparatively low accident rate. However, there is need for further improvement, as the accident rate of the State as a whole is much higher than it should be. During the 55-year period 1882-1936, in- clusive, reports of the State Department of Mines and Minerals show a total of 7,005 (an average of 127.36 per year) men killed in and around the coal mines. Of this number, 6,425 (91.7 percent) were killed underground, 346 (4.9 percent) in the shaft, and 234 (3.3 percent) on the surface. Of the fatalities underground, 3,300 (51.3 percent) were killed by falls of roof, sides, or face coal, 1,167 (18.1 percent) by haulage, 639 (9.9 percent) by handling explosives, 579 (9 percent) by explosions, 151 (2.3 percent) by electricity, and 589 (9.1 percent) by other means. Of the fatalities in the shaft, 171 men (46.5 percent) were killed by falling down the shaft, 14 (41.6 percent) by the cage, and 31 (8.9 percent) otherwise. On the surface, 113 (48.2 percent) of the fatalities were due to railroad cars, 51 (21.7 percent) to machinery, and 70 (29.9 percent) to other causes. The fact that 7,005 lives (an average of 127.36 per year) were lost during 1882-1936 is sufficient evidence that in the past too little interest has been taken in safety by either the management or workers. A realization of this deplorable loss of life should act as an incentive to the industry to make greater effort to prevent accidents in the future. After an accident occurs, the facts pertaining to it become history, and anything that may be done afterward cannot change in any way the damage that has already been done, such as loss of life, personal injury, and destruction of property. The main benefit that can be derived from an acci- dent is that suitable procedure may be adopted and some lesson may be learned to aid in preventing a similar accident in the future. The time-cost-risk analysis described herein was performed as part of an evaluation of the Advancing Oil Shale Mining Technology Program performed by The Aerospace Corporation. The objectives of this analysis are to assess the feasibility of the program relative' to time and cost constraints, and to determine the probabilities of achieving various technological goals. A combination of standard program planning and analysis techniques were used to achieve these objectives. These included a critical path analysis, a resource allocation analysis, and a risk analysis.

When the original version of this study was published in 1972 it was evident that a problem was developing on the energy scene. The ability of the United States to find the energy supplies it needed within its own boundaries--at least in the forms desired--was declining. Production of crude oil in the United States had peaked in 1970 and was declining slowly; environmental restrictions had begun to hamper the production and consumption of high sulfur coal; natural gas reserves were beginning to dwindle; and the development of nuclear power was proceeding more slowly than originally planned. Shortfalls in energy supply were being met through the importation of increasingly larger quantities of petroleum, but supplies were adequate and the price of the imports was below that of domestic production. The energy problem was more prospective than current. In October of 1973 the prospective problem became the "Energy Crisis' when the Arab petroleum exporting countries reduced crude oil production, imposed an embargo on the shipment of crude oil to the United States, and then raised the price of crude oil in a series of large steps. This crisis was a clear demonstration of the dangers of the dependence of the United States on imported petroleum, and of the Nation's vulnerability to the actions of the oil exporting countries.
