As the world progresses toward the renewable energy transition, the demand for minerals increases exponentially. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA) 2021 Net Zero by 2050 Report, critical mineral production needs to grow six times to combat climate change. It’s estimated that four to seven percent of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions come from the mining sector’s Scope 1 and 2 (direct and indirect) emissions. Including Scope 3 (upstream, downstream, and embedded) emissions, the sector accounts for 28% of global GHG emissions. In a typical mining operation, diesel fuel is the biggest source of direct GHG emissions, and haulage is often the main source of diesel emissions. Large haul trucks have been the industry standard for over 50 years and offer flexibility, relatively low capital cost (especially with equipment lease options), and guaranteed technology with known maintenance. The challenge will be to justify their continued use when there are more economical options that lead to significant reductions in GHG emissions. The purpose of this study is to compare five haulage options in terms of GHG emissions, using the methodology defined by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Scopes 1, 2, and 3 (Category 2). Additionally, this analysis compares operating and capital costs associated with the five haulage options (emerging and proven technologies): 1) Diesel-Electric Haul Trucks, 2) Battery-Electric Haul Trucks, 3) Fuel Cell Haul Trucks, 4) Railveyor, and 5) Conveyor. This analysis looks at the emissions and costs associated with operating the equipment (fuel and electricity), the embedded emissions and costs associated with the construction and installation of the equipment itself, and the associated infrastructure (roads, powerlines, and rail).

LIX63 in combination with DNNS selectively extracts nickel and/or cobalt from acidic leach liquors with pH values as low as 1.0. Nickel/cobalt and cobalt/nickel selectivities are achieved by varying the relative concentrations of LIX63 and DNNS. Increasing LIX63 concentration retards both extraction and strip-ping rates while DNNS has the opposite effect. Slope analyses of equilibrium data indicate that both LIX63 and DNNS are present in the extracted complexes. Examples of possible flowsheets are presented.

Understanding multiphase particulate systems is essential for the further advancement of mineral processing technology. Characterisation, analysis, and simulation of these complex systems provide a fundamental basis for the development of improved mineral processing technology. One of the more recent tools that can be used to help provide a foundation for improved mineral processing technology is high resolution cone beam X-ray micro computed tomography (CT). During the past ten years point-projection X-ray micro CT systems have been used for 3D visualisation and quantitative analysis of multiphase particulate systems. Analysis of packed particle beds containing as many as 30 000 particles can be accomplished in less than three hours with special software to establish the 3D characteristics of each particle in the population and the spatial organisation of the packed particle bed. Now, due to advances in X-ray optics, the resolution afforded with point-projection micro CT systems has been improved by at least an order of magnitude using a lens-based X-ray micro CT system. The development of software tools for the 3D characterisation, analysis, and simulation of packed particle beds using high resolution X-ray micro tomography (HRXMT) is discussed including examples of application in the areas of comminution (particle damage and preferential grain boundary fracture), exposure/liberation analysis (liberation-limited separation efficiency, including coal washability), and filtration/heap leaching (pore network structure of packed particle beds and simulated flow using the LB method of computational fluid dynamics).

In 1986, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines Studied 25,340 acres of the 28,960-acre Twelve Mile Creek Wilderness Study Area (OR-003-162) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Malheur County, OR, about 30 miles northwest of McDermitt, NV. The area is underlain by thick sequences of rhyolite to with lesser amounts of andesite and basalt flows. Bureau of Mines personnel reviewed pertinent literature, mining records, and examined the study area for possible mineral resources in geologically favorable sites. There are no organized mining districts and no record of past or current mining activity. Based on sample results, published literature and field observations, there are no identified mineral resources.

This paper describes the results of a detailed analysis of a loess deposit at the deep foundations test site established by the Kansas Department of Transportation. Multiple CPT, SPT, and pressuremeter tests were conducted as part of the investigation. This paper includes an evaluation of the effectiveness of common correlations used with the CPT, SPT when used for classification of loess and estimating its properties. Results show that common correlations must be used with caution as significant errors in estimation may result from using methods developed for other soil types. Laboratory testing included direct shear, triaxial, collapse, and consolidation testing, with many of the tests conducted on both vertically and horizontally oriented samples to evaluate anisotropic behavior. The results showed that strength properties could be considered to be isotropic.

This publication summarizes the in-house and contract research and development projects programed for fiscal year 1981 by the Bureau of Mines under its Minerals Environmental Technology activity. The document provides a mechanism for interested parties, including potential contractors, to gain insight into ongoing and projected work of the Bureau?s environmental research efforts. Research to identify and correct environmental problems associated with mining and metallurgical operations has long been an integral part of the Bureau's mission. The environmental research and demonstration activities of the Bureau were consolidate in 1979 with the formation of the Minerals Environmental Technology program, which is directed toward the elimination or reduction of environmental problems associated with the extraction and processing of minerals. Among the efforts underway are development of data and technology for assessing the potential environmental impact of minerals development, for monitoring minerals extraction operations, and for establishing viable reclamation requirements on abandoned mine lands; development and demonstration of technology 'or control of environmental disturbances during minerals extraction operations; development and demonstration of land reclamation and mine closure techniques to restore or enhance the productive use of mined lands; development of engineering techniques that incorporate state-of-the-art mining environmental technology in the design and planning of minerals extraction operations; development and demonstration of new mining systems that greatly reduce or eliminate the adverse environmental impacts of minerals extraction; and providing the technologic base for Federal, State, and local establishment of environmental standards for mining operations. Included in the minerals-processing-related work are projects to clean mineral-processing waters: demonstrate a Bureau process for scrubbing SO from powerplant stack :;as; recover dissolved minerals from process streams; stabilize discarded dusts, slags, and tailings: remove hazardous contaminates from byproduct wastes; reduce generation of waste solids; and improve metallurgical process engineering to eliminate pollution. Approximately $21 million was appropriated for this work in fiscal year 1981.

THE Taranaki oil-field is situated on the western side of the North Island of New Zealand, at about its widest part, and may be said to be the most compact and fertile part of the Dominion, for, with the exception of the upper half of Mount Egmont and of the ranges adjoining, which absorb 36,000 acres, the whole of the area, minus what is taken up by the rivers and streams is suitable for settlement, and certainly two-thirds is good land. The gross area of the district is 2,417,299 acres. The principle rivers are the Wanganui, Mokau, Waitara, Patea and Waiwakaiho. PanAust’s Phu Kham copper-gold operation (Phu Kham) in Laos is currently limited by throughput in the Semi Autogenous Grinding (SAG) mill. The ability to accurately predict SAG mill throughput (throughput) is therefore critical to accurately forecast copper and gold production. During the fourth quarter of 2016 the proportion of hard unweathered rocks in the mill feed increased, resulting in a period of lower than expected throughput. These low throughput rates prompted a study with the aim of identifying a practical solution for throughput predictions. The study identified an empirical modelling approach based on actual SAG mill throughput rates. The empirical model was then optimised by linear programming to identify the ideal feed blend of unweathered rocks to achieve a maximum SAG mill throughput.Rock strength was the initial focus of the throughput study at Phu Kham because previous studies had identified a strong link between rock strength and throughput. It was determined that there was insufficient valid data to adequately model but sufficient data to qualitatively characterise rock strength. The data identified that the weathering and lithology had a controlling influence on the rock strength. Complicating throughput predictions were operational improvements (changes to blasting and mill settings) implemented in response to the lower than expected throughput. This created uncertainty with the throughput equations. A self-learning empirical modelling method was developed to predict the throughput by incorporating fundamental rock properties with operational practices and improvements. The method is based on the proportion of mill feed with similar weathering and lithology (a proxy for comminution performance) and the actual mill throughput using the SAG mill as the analytical instrument. The modelling method simultaneously incorporated the sum and interaction of unmodelled influences including blasting, crushing and mill settings. The empirical modelling method worked at Phu Kham because the lithology and weathering has an intuitive and observable controlling influence on SAG mill throughput. "One of the most important wartime activities of the Bureau of Mines was the search for new sources of mineral necessary to the prosecution of the war. Part of that effort was in the form of metallurgical service extended to other government agencies engaged in purchasing and stock piling some of the more critical and strategic materials.Fluorite was one of the materials stock piled by the Metals Reserve Company. The fluorite was usually in the form of coarse metallurgical con¬centrate purchased in the United States and abroad. The material was stock¬piled to insure an adequate reserve of fluorite for the metallurgical industries. The domestic production of metallurgical fluorite containing a minimum effective calcium fluoride content of 55 percent,4/ however, gradually increased until production was at least equal to consumption. The stock-piled metallurgical fluorite, therefore, soon became a surplus commodity.On the other hand, the supply of acid-grade fluorite, containing a minimum of 97.5 percent calcium fluoride and n maximum of 1.5 percent silica,5/ was never entirely adequate. Increased consumption of acid-grade material in the aluminum, petroleum, and chemical industries kept that material on the critical list during the war.Under the circumstances, it was felt that a study of the possibility of producing acid-grade fluorite from the metallurgical stock piles would be of some benefit to the war effort. Consequently, samples of fluorite from several of the Metals Reserve Company stock piles were tested by the Bureau of Mines at the request of the War Production Board.Two groups of samples were submitted for testing. One consisted of metallurgical fluorite purchased from Mexico and stock-piled in the El Paso and Laredo, Texas, stock piles of the Metals Reserve Company. The second group of samples was from the stock piles at Gila, N. Mex.The sample submitted from the El Paso stock pile consisted of about 5,000 pounds of minus 4-inch material. Mineralogically, the sample consisted of fluorite contaminated by calcite, chert, quartz, and small amounts of iron and alumina. Although some of the fluorite was reasonably free from gangue at minus 1-inch, much of it remained locked in sizes as fine as 65-mesh.The Laredo sample was about 5,000 pounds of material from five different piles. The samples from each stock pile, A to E, inclusive, were analyzed separately to determine whether the grade of the material in the piles varied markedly. As there was little difference in the analyses, the samples were combined in proportion to the tonnage represented to make a composite sample for testing. The composite sample consisted of fluorite with small amounts of quartz, calcite, and barite. Most of the fluorite was the dark-colored, opaque variety. A small amount of iron-oxide staining was present, and traces of muscovite, clay, pyrite, and tourmaline were noted. The quartz was present as crystals in vugs, and as finely disseminated grains in the fluorite. The druzy quartz and the calcite were free at minus 10-mesh, but the disseminated grains, some of which were 1 to 15 microns in size, were not entirely free at minus 270-mesh. A petrographic estimate indicated that 65 percent of the silica was locked in the 150- to 200-mesh."

"Abstract -The zone of economic interest at H.J . Joel Gold Mine is the VS5/Beatrix Composite Reef, a quartz-pebble conglomerate of Archean age. The reef occurs at the base of the Eldorado Formation, Central Rand Group, of the Witwatersrand Supergroup. At !east three stratigraphically distinct conglomerates form this economic zone. In order of deposition these are the Footwall, Beatrix, and the VS5/Beatrix reefs. The Footwall and Beatrix reefs are equated with the Aandenk Formation with transport directions toward the northwest, whereas the VS5/Beatrix Reef is of Eldorado age, with transport directions toward the south. The change in the drainage direction was caused by a major basin-wide tectonic event that occurred prior to the deposition of the Eldorado Formation. The Beatrix Reef was formed in a proximal, braided, fluvial environment by a process of aggrading gravel bars between channelways. The VS5/Beatrix Reef was formed by the desegregation of pre-existing Beatrix Reef with the introduction of new material containing much shale detritus and is seen to have been deposited in a more ·distal, braided, fluvial environment, similar to the Beatrix Reef.The average gold concentrations are different for each conglomerate; the Beatrix at 32.1 ppm Au, the Footwall at 24.4 ppm Au, and the VS5/Beatrix at only 12.4 ppm Au. A sedimentary gold concentrating process related to higher energy braid channels was primarily responsible for these high gold grades. Not only the basal unconformity surface, but also, internal degredation surfaces, were prime sites for concentration. An understanding of the spatial distribution of these differing conglomerates and their braid channels forming the economic reef zone is necessary in predicting ore grades for future mining."

The number of petroleum refineries in the United States continued to decline during 1954, and according to the Bureau of Mines annual survey there were 326 refineries with a total daily throughput capacity of 8,420,630 barrels, as of January 1, 1955. The increase in capacity for the year was 413,733 barrels daily, while the number of refineries declined 11. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude oil increased during 1954 from 23,759 barrels daily to 25,830. Breaking down the crude-oil capacity increase, by refining districts; 32 percent was installed at refin¬eries located in the Texas Gulf Coast district, 25 percent in the East Coast district, and 13 percent in both the Louisiana Gulf Coast and the California districts. The Appalachian No. 1, Texas Inland, and New Mexico refining districts reported declines in capacity during the year. Additional crude-oil capacity under construction, January 1, 1955, totaled 146,800 barrels daily. Included in this total are 4 new refineries, 1 each in California, Minnesota, New Mexico, and Washington. In addition to the' new facilities, equipment producing 1.49,550 barrels daily is being replaced.

The state of sampling practice in South African minerals industry must be appreciated in the context of the changes that the country has recently lived through. These include the entrepreneurship and investment in local mineral developments, the 'unbundling of mineral assets', the rising foreign control of South Africa's mineral assets, developments in the regulatory environment, and the training that has come to the industry through international experts. In terms of their financial contribution the five most important commodities in the South African mining industry include gold, platinum, non-ferrous metals, ferrous metals, and coal. International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards form the basis for international trade in two of these commodities and have had a steadying influence on sampling practice over the years. The contribution of the minerals industry to the economic well-being of South Africa and the strong financial links between good sampling practice and minerals marketing, has acted as a driver for improved sampling practice. The state of sampling practice at mining operations of the five main commodities was found to be quite widely divergent with 'pockets of sampling excellence' in each of the commodities. The stages of mineral development at mines for each of the commodities have been described in terms of the sampling sites, sampling mechanisms, and associated problems at different stages of mineral production from exploration, through face sampling, blasthole sampling, and in-mine grade control, ore processing and handling, metallurgical subsampling, process subsampling, and subsampling in the laboratory. In each case the principal errors were identified and their potential impact on value erosion was estimated. In the final analysis it is evident that the greatest problems arise in the early stage of mineral development, and that ferrous metals and coal are particularly susceptible to loss of value through poor sampling practice. Several examples of value lost through poor sampling at the marketing stage that arise from breaching contract specifications, either in terms of grade or sizing, are described. The conclusion is that larger companies with larger ore deposits and greater human, financial, and capital resources are probably more compliant with 'best sampling practice' than smaller companies. Finally the message that equipment suppliers are sending is that business is booming and the awakened awareness of the issues around sampling practice are translating into rands and cents spent on improved sampling equipment.

The results of a 2 phase evaluation program designed to determine the amenability of an oxide ore from the Butte, Montana mine of the Anaconda Company to a sulfuric acid leach is presented. In the phase 1 preliminary evaluation, using roll tests and percolation leaching in small columns, it is shown that the ore is highly extractable at low acid consumption ratios. In the phase 2 confirmatory tests in large columns on l-l.5 tons of material, the amenability of the ore to the leaching process is proven and pregnant solution grade profiles from planned commercial heaps established.

Some years ago, the authors developed an analysis of non-Newtonian pipe flow based on enhanced turbulent microscale and associated sublayer thickening. This analysis, which can be used for various rheologic modelling equations, has in the past been applied to smooth-walled pipes. The present paper extends the analysis to rough walls, using the popular Bingham plastic equation as a representative rheological behaviour in order to prepare friction-factor plots for comparison with measured results. The conditions for laminar-turbulent transition for both smooth and rough walls are also considered, and comparisons are made with earlier correlations and with experimental data.

The need for the hydraulic transportation of coal in the New South Wales coal industry, both from the coal face to the surface and from the coal mine to the consumer or the port for export, is explained. Details of research projects currently in progress and involving the hydraulic transportation of New South Wales coals are given together with information on the hydraulic transportation of coal in the United States of America. The potential of hydraulic transportation as a viable alternative to the proposed expansion and upgrading of the New South Wales railway system to meet the projected New South Wales coal production to the year 2000 is described.

The indirect estimation of intact rock properties is particularly useful for preliminary investigations in engineering projects. In this paper we examine the usability of electrical resistivity, a nondestructive measurement, for the prediction of physical and mechanical rock characteristics. Physico-mechanical tests (uniaxial compression, Brazilian tensile, density, and porosity tests) and electrical resistivity measurements were performed on specimens of 36 rock types. Before the resistivity tests, the specimens were completely saturated with saline solution. Evaluation of the test results showed that there are medium or strong correlations between resistivity and rock properties. There are also strong or stronger correlations between the two parameters for the rock classes. The regression equations developed were statistically tested, and their validity was confirmed. The results were also compared with previous studies. The conclusion is that electrical resistivity measurement can be used for reliably estimating physical and mechanical rock characteristics.

The method for determining oil and water saturations described herein has been used successfully for several years in the core laboratories of the Bureau of Mines. The apparatus constructed according to the original specifications has proved very satisfactory; in fact, it has been widely adopted by core laboratories throughout the petroleum industry. The writers have found that the method gives reproducible results, the degree of accuracy depending largely on the attention to details given by the operator. The relative importance of these details of procedure and the design of the apparatus are discussed in this report. In September 1940, the Bureau of Mines published a report describing a method used in its laboratories for the determination of the water content of oil-field cores. The procedure was essentially the same as that adopted by the American Society for Testing Materials for the determination of the water content of petroleum products, although the apparatus and technique were altered slightly to increase the precision of the method and to adapt it to the characteristics of the material to be tested. The report also contained a description of the method used at that time in the Bureau’s core laboratories for measuring the oil content of a core, utilizing the sample on which the water-saturation determination had been made. The procedure involved the transfer of the weighed sample, from which the water had been distilled and measured, to a Soxhlet extractor and the removal of the remaining oil by means of a suitable solvent. Soon after the report was published, the water-determination apparatus described therein was modified so that both the oil and water contents of a core sample could be determined simultaneously. This method, which has been described by Yuster, is now widely used throughout the industry.

DURING the closing month of 1929, Walter Douglas found his health impaired by the strain of many difficult years of alternating prosperity and depression, and in April 1930 resigned the presidency of Phelps Dodge. Douglas was succeeded by Louis S. Cates. The choice broke a tradition that had been held inviolate for almost a hundred years. For the first time in its long history, the direction of the company's policies and operations was entrusted to a stranger without previous Phelps Dodge background, training, experience, or tradition. But the choice was wisely made. For a time at least, the path of Phelps Dodge was to run through rough and dubious ground, and no man in the United States was better qualified to blaze that trail than Louis Cates. After graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cates had served a rough and financially un- profitable apprenticeship at one of the century-old mining camps of Chihuahua, Mexico. Coal, as one of the vital sources of energy in China, has raised widespread concerns regarding its safety issues amidst the country’s economic growth driven by coal. To address this concern, this study employed the Kuznets curve, multiple linear regression, and data envelopment analysis models to investigate the impact of Chinese coal economic development on coal mine deaths from 1992 to 2021. The findings revealed a clear correlation between the Chinese coal economy and coal mine deaths. Specifically, per capita coal output, the death rate per million coal tons, and the death rate per hundred thousand persons exhibited positive, negative, and negative correlations, respectively, with the growth of coal income over the past three decades. Moreover, when the coal workers and coal output factors remained unchanged, the income of coal demonstrated a negative correlation with future changes in coal mine deaths. Notably, with three decades of coal economy development, substantial improvements in coal mine safety have been observed in China. Consequently, this research provides valuable insights for formulating safety measures and policies in coal mines across different economic levels, as well as a useful framework for assessing safety development in the coal industry.

PURSUANT to a recommendation made by the Section delegates at their conference at the Annual Meeting of the A.I.M.E. last February, the Directors, at their meeting on March 15, 1944, appointed a committee charged with the duty of investigating the present status of licensing and registration of engineers, and to make a report on the whole subject for the information of the mining fraternity. The committee consisted of E. W. Ellis, chairman, H. D. Keiser, Henry T. Mudd, J. J. Croston, and Simon Strauss. Messrs. Keiser and Strauss were unable to assist in the work of the committee, and Mr. Mudd was forced to resign in July, his place being taken by A. F. Greaves-Walker. Able assistance was given the committee by T. Keith Legare, executive secretary of the National Council of State Boards of Engineering Examiners, and by Ed. ward Larson, executive secretary of the National Society of Professional Engineers. The accompanying somewhat condensed version of the report of Mr. Ellis's committee, dated Oct. 15, 1944, is confined to facts rather than to recommendations. The "Model Law" to which reference is made was first drafted by repre¬sentatives of six national engineering societies in 1911. It has since been amended many times, the latest version dated June 1943 is recommended to the State Licensing Boards as a pattern for formulating or amending state laws.
