In planning activities, the aim has been to adapt the work to changing conditions and needs of the mining industries and to avoid becoming bound to any particular type of investigation when others are found to be of more pressing interest.

"Abstract- The accepted practice for the estimation of thin (2D) vein deposits recommends the use of the grade x thickness service variable (i.e., the accumulation). Grade estimates are obtained indirectly by the estimated accumulation/estimated thickness ratio. This practice stems from the varying support (thickness) problem and the resulting non-additive nature of the grade variable. We compare the actual performance of the direct grade estimation approach used by some practitioners to that of the indirect approach using accumulation. Our simulated and real data indicate that the direct approach is more accurate for point grade estimation where the grade-thickness correlation coefficient is positive (and vice-versa). Moreover, the relative gain of the direct method increases with the (positive) correlation coefficient. This finding contradicts common thinking that the indirect approach should be the preferred method where grade-thickness correlation is strongly positive. Also, for a given positive grade-thickness correlation, the relative gain of the direct method increases with the coefficient of variation of the grade and thickness. Résumé - L’estimation de veines minces (2D) minéralisées est normalement réalisée à l’aide de la variable auxiliaire épaisseur x teneur (i.e., accumulation). Les estimés des teneurs sont alors obtenus indirectement du rapport accumulation estimée/épaisseur estimée. Cette pratique découle du problème du support variable pour la teneur, l’épaisseur de la veine, qui fait que la teneur est alors une variable non-additive. Nous comparons les performances de l’estimation directe de la teneur, utilisée par certains praticiens, à celle de l’approche indirecte. Pour l’estimation ponctuelle des teneurs, nos données simulées et réelles indiquent une meilleure justesse de l’approche directe quand la corrélation teneur-épaisseur est positive (et vice-versa). De plus, le gain relatif de la méthode directe s’accroît avec la valeur de cette corrélation (positive). Ce résultat contredit l’opinion répandue que l’approche indirecte devrait être utilisée en présence de forte corrélation positive de la teneur et de l’épaisseur. Nous montrons également que pour une corrélation positive teneur-épaisseur donnée, le gain de l’approche directe augmente avec les coefficients de variation de l’épaisseur et de la teneur."

"A complementary ion exchange/solvent extraction process for the recovery of copper from low-grade ores developed by Iontech Engineering Ltd. is described. It has successfully been implemented on a full-scale plant level at the Buchim Copper Mine in Macedonia, yielding a maximum copper cathode production of 2400 tonnes per year. Technical and economic aspects of three years of operational experience are comprehensively compared with the Asarel Medet copper plant in Bulgaria, which is utilizing conventional solvent extraction in the enrichment/purification step. INTRODUCTION The concentration and separation of copper from primary leachates is one of the key operations in the hydrometallurgical processing of oxide ores (Langner, 2011). Conventionally, this basic operation is conducted by submitting the pregnant leach solution (PLS), with a 1–5 g/L Cu content, from the initial sulfuric acid leach to a solvent-extraction (SX) process in which copper reports to the organic phase (see Figure 1). After phase separation, the metal is stripped from the extractant/diluent mixture employing sulfuric acid to furnish a concentrated metal solution, usually containing 40–50 g Cu/L. The final products of the overall process are copper cathodes, which are obtained from a terminal electrowinning step.Although considered as “technology of choice”, SX to date is still suffering from several drawbacks, such as the risk of poor phase disengagement and the high capital costs of solvent-extraction plants. Especially, the processing of leachates with lower copper tenors (< 1 g/L) is often economically less attractive. As a result, tremendous efforts have been dedicated to the evaluation of alternative technologies to address these challenges."

"Cyclone separators of different design are being used in increasing numbers in the coal industry of today. One recent addition, the Compound Water Cyclone, is finding application in the North American and Australian coal fields for the beneficiation of coking coals and for the reduction of sulphur and ash in steam coals. In this paper, the combination of specific-gravity separation, thickening, classification and water recovery are discussed. All of these operations can now be accomplished by means of cyclones that are effectively combined in circuits of compact design. In the layout of such integrated plants, three main sections are distinguished, namely: a Main Section for cleaning the plus-28-mesh fractions; an Effluent-Beneficiation Section for treating the minus-28-mesh fractions; and a Water-Recovery Section, where the wash water is reconditioned, and the fine solids are removed in a semi-solid state as slugs or pellets. Depending on the nature of the coal and the specifications of the purchaser, water-cyclone circuits can be flexibly combined with HM Cyclones and froth flotation, as well as with ancillary equipment for dewatering and drying."

The additional information that Clarke and Taylor (1982) provide about the important but poorly documented Ardlethan deposit is, of course, very welcome. However their contention that structural considerations, in conjunction with petrology, alter the interpretation of the mineralogical and geochemical data presented previously (Scott, 1981) is not accompanied by adequate supporting evidence. Indeed characteristics of the orebodies studied invalidate their arguments.Heterogeneity between matrix and fragments is not a problem in the South Cherry and Ardwest orebodies because most samples are comprised entirely of interlocking hydrothermal assemblages with a fabric and mineralogy that is uniform through both former breccia fragments and matrix. In hand specimen, the rock superficially resembles altered granite and, as indicated by Clarke and Taylor (1982), a brecciated texture is difficult to discern. In thin section, relict brecciated textures can be observed as localized changes in the grainsize or in the distribution of minerals that outline former breccia fragments (P. J. Eadington, 1982, personal communication).Because of the intense brecciation and comminution of rocks (fragments &lt; 10 mm are usual) in the South Cherry and Ardwest breccia bodies, hydrothermal recrystallization was complete, resulting in homogenization of fragments and matrix. Furthermore, the amount of sample analysed (-100 g for drill core and 2-3 kg for hand specimens) is sufficiently large to be representative of both former breccia fragments and matrix. The Carpathia and Stackpool orebodies, with their abundance of sedimentary fragments, have alteration superimposed on a heterogeneous fabric, and were not studied. Thus the problems of differentiating between fragments and matrix (Clarke and Taylor, 1982) are irrelevant to the particular orebodies described in my paper.Within the alteration halo, which is several hundred metres wide (Paterson, 1976), the very uniformity of the alteration assemblages implies that subsequent, postmineralization brecciation is of only minor significance.Indeed tourmaline pipes in the Ardwest pit are less than several metres across (Clarke, 1979) and produce minimal alteration in the surrounding rocks. Therefore the interpretation of the mineralogical zonation is not compromised by the recognition of several periods of brecciation.

The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 limits to 2 milligrams per cubic meter (for dust containing a maximum of 5% quartz) the average respirable dust concentration to which individual miners may be exposed. Section 205 of the Act directs that an appropriate exposure formula for dusts with quartz content in excess of 5% be established. This formula, entered in F. R. Document 70-12351 filed September 16, 1970, is 10 milligrams per cubic meter divided by % quartz. Thus, the total respirable dust exposure permitted limits the quartz to a maximum of 100 micrograms. For example, if % quartz is 5%, 10 mg/5 = 2 milligrams, and (.05) (2 mg) = 100 micrograms. Similarly, if % quartz is 10%, 10/10 = 1, and (.10) (1 mg) = 100 micrograms, etc. If the % quartz is less than 5%, the 2 mg/M3 limit prevails.

Introduction. OF the treatment of the slime-pulp of gold- and silver-ores by cyanidation, agitation is an essential part. When prepared for treatment, this pulp, consisting of ore reduced to such fineness that approximately 80 per cent. of it will pass through a 200-mesh screen, is mixed with a certain proportion of water, carrying in solution the quantity of cyanide (KCN) and other chemicals required. The water-constituent of the pulp thus prepared usually ranges from 1 to 2 parts by weight to 1 of the dry ore. Thus constituted&apos;, the pulp is charged into treatment-tanks, the shape and capacity of which vary, according to the quantity of pulp to be treated daily and the method of agitation to be employed. Tanks have no other function in a cyanide-plant than that of being economical and convenient containers or receptacles for holding the pulp, solution, or water used in the operations. It is by agitation that the solids in the pulp charged into the tanks are kept in suspension in, and mixed with, the solution in the proper proportions required for the treatment. If the proper mixture of solution to solids be determined to be 2 to 1 by weight (which is, approximately, 5 to 1 by volume), this proportion should be maintained in every part of the charge ; -that is, each solid particle of the pulp, whether it be of 180- or 400-mesh size, should, be surrounded by five times its own volume of solution throughout the whole period of treatment. The reason is, that the amount of chemicals ascertained to be necessary for dissolving the gold and silver contained in the solids, is held in uniform solution in the water-constituent of the pulp, and, therefore, the determined proportions of solution and solids must be maintained at all times during treat-

Dr. Emrick, honored guests, distinguished speakers, ladies and gentlemen, I am Langan Swent, Vice President for Environmental Affairs and Occupational Safety and Health, of Homestake Mining Company. Today, I appear on behalf of the American Mining Congress, as chairman of its uranium mine health subcommittee. The American Mining Congress is a trade association of several hundred members, which include the producers of a large proportion of the nation&apos;s uranium. I&apos;ve been asked to make a statement of principles for the uranium industry. There are two types of principles that apply to industry in general, and specifically to the uranium industry. Some have external origins and apply regardless of what industry does or thinks. Others are generated by industry itself and serve as goals for the industry. I&apos;ll discuss some of each type. I&apos;ll limit my statement to those principles related to the subject of this conference--radiation hazards in mining. I won&apos;t take your time trying to explain some of the unrelated principles that we must all contend with, such as Parkinson&apos;s Laws, Murphy&apos;s Law, and the Peter Principle. First and foremost, industry has a sincere interest in the well-being and health of its employees. There are two basic reasons for this. One is a basic respect for human lives, especially those of people we see and work with every day. No one in management wants to carry the lifelong burden of blame for a life lost due to poor working conditions. Most uranium and other mining is done in small communities. Production workers, maintenance workers, service workers, shift bosses, foremen, superintendents and managers all live in the same community. They attend the same churches. They serve together in civic activities. Their children go to the same schools. If one employee in such a community loses his life due to poor working conditions, those remaining know in a daily and intimate way the resulting personal tragedy, usually of a bereaved widow and fatherless children. This sad experience makes the community, including industry management, intensely sensitive to the need for maintaining good working conditions in the mines. But what about the segment of industry that does not live in the mining communities? Corporate and owner&apos;s offices are frequently hundreds of miles from the communities where the mining takes place. Many of these people are not personally acquainted with the workers, and there are few close personal ties between the two communities. The distant staff are, however, still human beings and motivated by the same basic human respect for life. Mr. Manuel Gomez of MSHA and a member of the planning committee for this conference summed this point up expressively when he told me: "No one group has a corner on compassion." In addition to compassion, there is another factor. In both communities the basic assignment to everyone is to produce profits. In carrying out this assignment, supervisory and management people are acutely aware of the high cost of illnesses and accidents. Their objective of maximizing profits is advanced significantly by minimizing illnesses and accidents at the mines. A business that has illnesses and accidents generally suffers from poor employee morale and high employee turnover, both of which detract from profits. Next, I would like to talk about what industry has done in the field that is the subject of this conference. We have worked at all sorts of methods to reduce exposure of employees since the exposure standards were first introduced and then lowered. Other speakers will go into details of technology, and I&apos;ll simply comment on exposure results. These are best shown in Table 1. The table shows the average WL to which miners in U.S. underground uranium mines have been exposed since 1937 through 1980. The trend of decreasing radon daughter concentrations throughout the period is obvious. Figure 1 presents this data graphically and shows the trend at a glance. This record begins in 1937 when uranium, as such, really wasn&apos;t being mined or sought. The concentrations given by the U.S. Public Health Service were for a few small vanadium mines which carried uranium as a by-product. A few years later, when the Manhattan project to develop the atomic bomb was begun, these mines became the first U.S. uranium mines and the vanadium became the by-product! The radiation hazard then also received attention and the average concentrations began to decline. As knowledge of the reality of the hazard spread, conditions improved. The search for uranium in the U.S. turned up new and larger ore bodies that had to be mined by large underground mines. These mines involved ventilation planning from the beginning, and when they came into production in the late 1950&apos;s they lowered the average concentrations greatly. Then in 1960 the American Standards Association adopted a standard setting 1 working level as a satisfactory condition, and several action levels up to 10WL, at which point removal of people from exposure was called for. As a result of the uranium producing states governors&apos; conference in December 1960, state mine inspection agencies, in the early 1960&apos;s, began to adopt and enforce the ASA standards. As a result, average concentrations again declined. In 1967, the Federal Radiation Council recommended an annual limitation of 12 WLM per individual. Thallium is one of the rare metals that has come into commercial use within recent years . Its comparative scarcity , combined with a resemblance to the common metal lead , have retarded the development of uses for thallium . Although production is still measured in pounds rather than in tons , it is now finding application in a number of fields . Perhaps the earliest commercial use of thallium was as a constituent of optical glass of higher refractive power than similar glasses containing lead . One of the later applications to attract attention was the use of the oxysulphide in a sensitive electrical device similar to the selenium cell . The " Thalofide " cell , which was patented in 1919 , constituted for a time the most important outlet for thallium. During the next few years the limited use of thallium and its salts in other fields was insufficient to absorb an annual production of a few hundred pounds , and the price dropped from $ 16 or $18 per pound in 1922 to $ 5 per pound in 1924 . Beginning in 1925 several new uses were developed , especially as a poison for rodents and ants , and as a result the demand for thallium increased sufficiently to cause a recovery in price to the present level of from $12 to $15 per pound .

Although secondary-recovery methods have not been applied widely in California, it is apparent that increasing attention and effort must be given to this phase of recovery if the State is to maintain its high rank as a petroleum producer. Steadily increasing demands for petroleum products and decreasing rates of discovery of new oil fields, with rapid depletion of existing reserves, emphasize the prospect of an adverse situation of supply and demand in the not-far-distant future. If the trend of discoveries becomes more favorable or if more complete economic recovery of the oil in place can be obtained by secondary recovery, this situation can be averted. Not only are these reserves of economic importance to the petroleum industry for meeting increasing market demands; but economic reclamation of such reserves is an important conservation measure, which will prolong the productive life of many fields. Accordingly, progressive operators in California are alert to the possibilities of secondary recovery and have done much to implement such operations wherever feasible. Most current operations are of the pressure-maintenance type, in which the reservoir pressure is maintained or partly maintained by injecting natural gas to in-crease oil recovery. The possibilities of recovering additional oil from stripper fields by gas drive and water flooding (including water disposal) also are being tested in experimental field projects. Table 1 summarizes current gas-and water-injection projects in California.

The flotation of calcite has been studied by many investigators, especially in terms of type of collector; pH; and metal ions that activate and, more importantly, depress the flotation of calcite (1)(2). Research was extended to the investigation of the effect of polyvalent metal salts and sodium silicate using these materials added separately or in mixtures (3)(4)(5)(6). Flotation of calcite was also studied with respect to its function as a carrier in the beneficiation of kaolin clays by Ultraflotation (7) (8) (9). The carrier used in Engelhard Minerals & Chemicals Corporation&apos;s industrial Ultraflotation operation is calcite. This fact, coupled with the continuing interest in Ultraflotation phenomena, led to a study to determine the effect of polyvalent metal-silicate hydrosols on the flotation of calcite.

The increasing demand for coal and depletion of shallow depth reserves are pushing towards deeper mining. In deeper coal mines with multiseam workings, the problem of ventilation surges many folds primarily related to air quantity requirement, heat, humidity and spontaneous heating/fire in goaved (gobbed) out areas. The paper describes the design of a new approach to improve the ventilation system of a real-life deep underground coal mine with multiseam workings. For this, the ventilation problem of one deep underground coal mine 6&7 pits Bhutgoria Amalgamated Colliery of Tata Steel Ltd. with multiseam workings has been studied in detail to determine an appropriate solution. A ventilation survey of the mine and computer simulation of the ventilation network has been carried out to reach a practical solution. Ventilation survey results have been analysed to develop a representative ventilation network of the mine for both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Further, computer simulation of the ventilation network of the mine has been performed to virtually verify the application of a highcapacity booster fan in the present ventilation circuit without disturbing the vulnerable areas. Field validation is also carried out after the implementation of the solution in the mine to determine its efficacy. Thus, the findings of this paper can be directly applied for the installation of booster fans to achieve the required air quantity in deep underground coal mines with multiseam workings having spontaneous combustion liabilities of upper seam goaved out areas.

En este sentido, el presente texto señala las ventajas del uso de la emulsión gasificada como agente de voladura seguro -en tanto reacciona con una solución básica que lo sensibiliza químicamente, justo antes de su carguío a los taladros por medio del camión fabrica, así como agiliza las operaciones de voladura y de minado y reduce los costos de voladura.

The mineral industry is an important element in the human environment and in varying degrees contributes to the general standard of living throughout most of the world, both by supplying the basic materials required for heavy industry, transportation, construction, scientific equipment, and many labour saving tools and also by its contribution to the international economy.When projecting population growth and per capita resource utilization against a finite amount of nonrenewable mineral resources, it is apparent that at some future time, if the established trend continues, the supply of industrial minerals will progressively become exhausted according to their relative scarcity and world demand.In one way or another all of nature&apos;s mineral resources are used in the sel&apos;vice of man. Some of the products of their manufacture are essential to the survival and further development of our civilization, others are luxuries, desirable but not essential. Marine vessels are essential to maintain a flow of resollrces around the world, and as trade increases the size of the fleet will grow and the quantities of metals needed will be greater.The commodities they transport, may be used in an inefficient or extravagant manner causing unnecessary depletion which may adversely affect the activities of future generations. An example that comes readily to mind is fuel oil, the international transport of which uses a vast tanker fleet. When refined, large quantities of motor spirit are used in motor vehicles. The U.S.A. alone uses 70 billion gallons annually in the 90,000,000 automobiles in use.Much of this is used in private cars-of which there is one for every 2&apos;3 people-for transport between home and city. Well organized community transport would serve the same purpose, conserve a scarce commodity, take some of the stress out of livingdriving in a major city can hardly be considered a relaxing experience-and minimize the problem of atmospheric pollution.Whilst man has demonstrated his great versatility...

Philippines is a country that is richly endowed in mineral wealth. In 1988, Climax Arimco Mining Corp. (CAMC) geologists found the Dinkidi porphyry gold-copper deposit in Nueva Vizcaya province. It is the most significant mineral discovery in that country in recent times. To date, the company has defined indicated resources of 124 Mt (136 million st) of 1-g/t (0.029-oz/st) gold and 0.4% copper. This includes a high-grade core of 7.9 Mt (8.7 million st) of 6-g/t (0.175-oz/st) gold equivalent. Total contained metal is 124.4 t (4 million oz) of gold and 499 kt (1.1 billion lb) of copper. Dinkidi&apos;s discovery resulted from initial geologic reconnaissance and recognition of the intrusive complex that is exposed at surface and anomalous in its topographic expression. This was followed by systematic exploration. This includes extensive gradient array induced polarization (IP), ground magnetics, geochemical sampling and diamond drilling. This later defined a further 16 satellite porphyry targets in the Didipio region. Climax was been granted a Financial and Technical Assistance Agreement contract with the Philippine government. It allows 100% foreign ownership of mining projects. After four years of negotiations, Climax was the first company to have such an application granted. Some 120 applications from numerous international mining companies are waiting for approval following implementation of new Philippine Mining Act of 1995. Exploration history Didipio is located 200 km (125 miles) north of Manila at an elevation of about 700 m (2,300 ft) in the remote Sierra Madre mountains. This region remains mostly unexplored. The property is accessed by 25 km (15 miles) of logging track from the town of Cabarroguis, Quirino. The area experiences an average rainfall of about 3,000 mm (118 in.) a year. Most of it falls during the July-to-November typhoon season. Didipio was first recognized as a gold province in the 1970s when native Ifugao and Ilongot hunters discovered alluvial gold in the region. The region had been prospected over the years by local companies. They were mostly prospecting for alluvial gold. However, in 1988, Climax Mining geologists identified the potential of an obscure razorback ridge protruding from the alluvial valley floor. This ridge, later named Dinkidi by Climax, was the site of several small- scale tunnels. Locals had mined narrow quartz stockwork veining and sluiced soft argillic alteration zones, using irrigation canals and sluice boxes to catch free gold.
