Coal refuse impoundments are disposal facilities specifically designed for the coal mining industry. Re-purposing refuse impoundments for co-disposal with natural gas flowback water and waste rock overburden has been investigated. The aims of this study were to investigate properties of coal refuse classification under the influence of co-disposed wastes as geochemical material exposure pathways from hydraulically exposed sodium and calcium ( Na+, Ca2+) cation loading from disposal of flowback water produced during the development of horizontal drilled natural shale gas frack wells, and waste rock having limestone characteristics. The geotechnical index classification of saturated cohesionless refuse is required to evaluate the liquefaction potential for strain or strength loss contributing to ground movements. This study is relevant to identifying changes in the coal refuse geotechnical index classification as sand-like, clay-like, or a borderline transitional material from the effects of ion and waste exposure in the impoundment’s reservoir porewater. Laboratory geotechnical tests were performed on fine coal refuse blended with different cations to classify the altered plastic behavior and index classification. Following determination of the index classification, the specimen’s stress–strain responses were investigated through isotropically consolidated undrained (ICU) triaxial compression tests. This experimental study culminated with two salient findings: the first is that introduction of ions alone into the refuse tailings or impoundment porewater resulted in significant material changes in property index classification, and the second finding was that the difference in refuse index classification did not correlate into noticeable effects of the monotonic undrained triaxial strength parameters.

Malmberget town is located in northern Sweden, approximately 70 km north of the Arctic Circle. Parts of the town overlie more than 20 iron orebodies, consisting mainly of magnetite with smaller quantities of haematite. The mine is operated by the mining company LKAB. Mining started in the 17th century, but not until the railway to the coastal city of Luleå was completed in 1888 did large-scale production commence. Around 1920, mining proceeded underground and today sublevel caving is the only mining method used. Sublevel caving causes subsidence of the ground surface, and buildings and residential areas have been relocated due to the mining activities for more than 50 years. The number of seismic events accompanied by strong ground vibrations is now increasing. In 2008 the mine received a permit from the Environmental Court of Sweden to increase production to 20 Mt of crude ore per year. A prerequisite for the permit was that the mine conducts a number of investigations regarding the environmental impact on the residents of Malmberget. One of these investigations concerned how seismicity will change as production increases and what measures could be taken to reduce inconvenience to the town residents. Today the mine possesses an extensive seismic monitoring system with more than 180 underground and surface geophones. For this study, eleven seismically active volumes in Malmberget mine were identified, and for each of them, a yearly future maximum magnitude interval was estimated based on the current production plan. Relationships between historical seismic events and measured ground vibrations in the town of Malmberget were established, and future ground vibrations caused by expected seismic events were estimated using a probabilistic approach. The outcome was the number of intervals of expected ground vibration per year and per monitoring point. Possible measures to reduce inconvenience for the town residents include blast restrictions, sequencing, and possibly preconditioning. The ultimate long-term solution is an almost complete relocation of Malmberget town. This process has recently been formalized and LKAB is taking an active part in realizing this goal.

Premature failure of armoured face conveyor (AFC) chains due to corrosion is a significant proportion of the unplanned downtime experienced on longwall equipment. The AFC chains are constantly in contact with water and wet coal. The premature failure issue of AFC chains has become more prominent since the introduction of longwall top-coal caving with its additional AFC. Reverse osmosis (RO) is a popular water treatment method for reducing salinity and dissolved solids, but its impact on the corrosion of the AFC chains is unclear. This study has been commissioned to investigate the direct effects of RO water on the corrosion of AFC chains. An immersion test was carried out using AFC chain steel submerged in two water samples: untreated dam water and treated water from an RO treatment plant. Elemental analysis was conducted for both water samples, and four corrosion indices were measured for both water samples. The RO water more vigorously dissolves calcium carbonate scales leading to increased corrosion of the AFC chains although the dam water has much higher levels of calcium, chloride, sulphate, sodium, and magnesium. Bicarbonate ions are the main alkaline factor of water that provides the buffering capacity to acids. Decreased alkalinity without balancing other ions in water causes high corrosivity and decreased scaling tendencies.

Roxgold was a small exploration company when it discovered the Zone 55 orebody at the Yaramoko project in Burkina Faso in 2010. Since this time, it has actively progressed the project with the completion of a preliminary economic assessment in 2013, a feasibility study in early 2014 and obtained full permitting for construction in January 2015. With no other underground gold mine in Burkina Faso, developing a modern and productive modern gold mine in West Africa was considered a significant challenge as Roxgold moved from explorer to producer.To facilitate this development, Roxgold engaged an international underground mining contractor to partner this development. This has enabled Roxgold to successfully develop the mine over a relatively short time frame with construction commencing in April 2015, first gold being poured in May 2016 and commercial production being achieved in October 2016.This paper discusses key elements of the project development and highlights some of the challenges faced with operating in a remote poorly developed area with a limited mining culture. Furthermore, the authors highlight the key technical and operational aspects that make the Yaramoko project a very successful development project.CITATION:Cope, B and Churi, Y, 2017. Recent developments in mechanizing longwall it mining in Europe have aroused considerable interest among American coal-mine operators because this method provides an opportunity to improve safety, production, efficiency, and recovery. The success of longwall mining in Europe has depended to a large degree on development of effective roof-control systems. One of the major contributing factors in designing these systems is development off improved supports, which combine high load-bearing capacities with controlled yield characteristics, to use in the face areas. Other factors that relate to successful longwall mining involve knowledge of the structural properties of the strata above end below the coal bed being mined, movements of these strata induced by mining, and effects of the strata movements on the strata itself, as well as on the support system used. Extensive studies of the above factors relating to long-wall mining have been made in coal-mining countries abroad, and corresponding studies (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)3/ of room-and-pillar operations have been made in this country. Although descriptions and results of experiments of mechanized longwall operations in the United States have been published (6, 7, 8), this is the first instrumented study of roof behavior on a longwall operation. In view of the possible widespread application of this method of mining to American coal mines, where underground mining conditions are different from those found in European mines, an investigation was conducted at a mechanized longwall operation inn the Lancashire No. 15 mine, Barnes & Tucker Co., Cambric County, Bakerton, Pa., to study the factors that affect roof control. This report describes this investigation and discusses the results. A sulfate reducing bacteria strain (named SRB-A) is isolated from sanitary wastewater by using anaerobic technology of Hungate. The studies of physiological, biochemical and phylogenic of the isolated strain are carried out. The colonies of the strain are circle. Cells that are slightly curve, rod-shaped with the size of 1.0~3.0µm in length and 0.8~1.0µm in width. The optimum temperature for growth of the organism is 30~35°C. The optimum pH for growth is 7.0~7.2. Strain SRB-A can use sodium lactate, sodium citrate, sodium acetate, ethanol and acetone as electronic acceptor but can not use glycerol, glucose, sucrose and sodium oxatate. The isolated strain reduces sulfate, sulfide, sulfur, DSMO and FeCl3, then nitrate and nitrite can not be used. The strain has higher tolerance of NaCl, and the optimum growth occurs in the presence of 5%~8% (w/v) NaCl. The result of 16S rDNA sequence analysis indicates that the isolated strain SRB-A is the most similar to Desulfo-vibrio halophilus, and the level of the similarity was 98.4%. The isolated strain has a stronger ability to reduce sulfate, and the level of sulfate reduction reaches about 90% at pH 7 in the liquid medium. 0.6 to 0.8 is the optimum COD/SO42- in the medium for the isolated strain to show better ability to reduce sulfate. At pH 2.5 the level of removal of Cu2+ reaches 96.3%. Under the condition of pH 3.5, the level of removal of Zn2+ reaches 92.6%. When the value of pH reaches about 7, the Fe3+ is precipitated by the formation of Fe(OH)3, and Fe3+ is removed up to 89.4% at last.

The relative abundance of coal in India compared to other fossil fuels makes it a natural choice as the primary source of fuel, be it for steel making, power generation or for other uses. The wide variations in nature and type of Indian coals formed during lower Gondawana period and categorized as difficult-to-wash due to its typical mineral matter association with the organic matrix call for suitable beneficiation techniques as the preferred option for quality upgradation. The good quality coking coals of the upper seams are fast depleting leaving behind the inferior quality lower seam coal. The lower seam coals presently being mined are mostly low volatile coking coal (LVC). They constitute about 50% of the total coking coal reserves in India. The beneficiation of Low Volatile Coking coals pose a major challenge and detailed R & D studies was taken up to study the beneficiation characteristics of these coals. The studies revealed that the liberation characteristics at coarser sizes are very poor and the coal is to be ground to finer sizes for liberation. The most important factor that determines coal cleaning efficiency is liberation of organic matter from mineral matter. To achieve liberation grinding is necessary as a result range amount of ultra fines (-0.063 mm) coal is generated. Presence of these large amount of ultrafine in the coal fines, often impose severe technical constraints affecting not only its floatability but also in the downstream treatment of the products like dewatering and cake formation particularly when it is beneficiating through froth flotation. In the present paper optimization of ultra fines (-0.063 mm) has been tried for a LVC coal of Jharia coal field for the better liberation and beneficiation of the above coal fines. It is observed that by optimized, combination of size and number of balls generation of fines can be controlled with liberation. Keywords: coking coal, liberation, floatability, dewatering

"Highmont, a wholly owned subsidiary of Teck Corporation, operates a 25,000 ton/day mine and concentrator located in the Highland Valley of British Columbia. Construction of the plant commenced in the spring of 1979, and production from one grinding line began in late December 1980. The second grinding line began production in March 1980.The ore body consists of two main zones, the east and west pits, containing 134 million tons of ore, averaging 0.26% Cu and 0.27% Mo. Mineralization consists mainly of chalcopyrite (2/3), bornite (1/3), and molybdenite.The concentrator design incorporates an A-B-C grinding circuit (auto mill ball mill - crusher), followed by bulk flotation, copper-moly separation and leaching for moly concentrates. The two grinding and bulk flotation circuits are parallel and independent. Concentrate storage is provided between bulk flotation and copper¬moly separation and also ahead of molybdenite leaching. The plant design has been previously described in some detail. (""THE HIGHMONT CONCENTRATOR"" by C. V. Sibbald, CIMM Bulletin, March 1981).This paper will outline some of the problems associated with the construction, startup and early operation phases of the concentrator. A soldagem é um processo de união que envolve muitos fenômenos metalúrgicos que podem causar problemas práticos se não forem aplicados os princípios operacionais apropriados ao processo. O aço inoxidável ferrítico AISI 410S é uma liga de Fe-Cr que contêm em média 12,5% de cromo, isto melhora a resistência à corrosão, mas em parte sacrifica outras propriedades como a sua soldabilidade. Este estudo foi realizado através da deposição de um cordão de solda em duas chapas de aço AISI 410S pelo processo de eletrodo revestido, variando a energia de soldagem entre eles, onde se calculou a diluição de cada cordão depositado e a composição química da zona fundida de cada chapa. Além disso, foi avaliado através do diagrama de Shaeffler, as microestruturas formadas e os possíveis defeitos susceptíveis mediante os parâmetros utilizados nas chapas. Verificou-se que na chapa onde se aplicou baixa energia de soldagem não ocorreu o risco de defeitos. E na chapa que se aplicou alta energia houve a possibilidade de ocorrer fragilização e fissuração por formação de martensita. Salienta-se que a diluição foi maior nessa condição, mostrando que o controle da diluição em soldas é de grande importância por influenciar na qualidade do cordão de solda.

The Bureau of Mines estimated the potential availability of rare-earth oxides (EtEO), including yttrium, and thorium, which is also contained in the rare-earth bearing minerals monazite and bastnasite, from 38 'properties in market economy countries (MEC's). Only nine of the properties evaluated produce or would produce REO as the primary product; the others contain REO as a byproduct, chiefly from mineral sands operations recovering rutile, ilmenite, and zircon. Nearly 77% (2,578,000 mt) of the total 3,355,000 mt of recoverable RE0 evaluated is from producing properties. It is estimated that 21% (705,000 mt) of this total is from properties that could not realize a positive rate of return at the January 1984 market prices for the recovered commodities. At production capacities assumed for this evaluation, the amount of RE0 potentially available from producers ranges from an estimated 46,500 mt in 1986, to a peak of 50,900 mt in 1992, to 49,900 mt by the year 2000. Total MEG production in 1984 was estimated at 40,700 mt. Assuming demand does not increase sharply, producing properties can continue to fulfill overall REO demand through at least the end of this century.

A ventilated helical boost pump was developed that can handle varying flow rates and/or solids concentrations while operating at a single rotational speed and without computer assisted feedback controls. The boost pump developed and briefly tested during this program was designed to accomodate flows suitable for a 3-in. diameter pipeline. The boost pump's ventilated design provides the automatic pressure regulation needed to meet the system's requirements for supporting transient pipeline flow.

This publication combines a critical review of the literature on the microbiology of coal with an introduction to those areas of microbiology related to studies of coal as a biological material. The attack on coal by microorganisms as yet remains doubtful. Only the low-rank coals contain an indigenous microbial flora, and even these organisms are not peculiar to coal, but are common soil and water forms. No experimental data have as yet been presented, either in the literature or in the present work, which unequivocally demonstrate the oxidation of coal by microorganisms. Reasons for the resistance of coal to such attack, including insolubility, physicochemical structure, steric hindrance of enzyme action, and the presence of antibiotic materials in coal are discussed. Microorganisms do attack large aromatic molecules and the mode of oxidation of aromatic ring systems by bacteria is presented. Well-defined pathways are known for the oxidation of polycyclic compounds with one to three rings, and these paths with their key intermediates are described and related to the possible oxidation of coal.

Laboratory and pilot-plant tests of spodumene-beryl pegmatites of the Kings Mountain, N. C., area resulted in development of a new and improved method by the Bureau of Mines for separating and recovering spodumene, mica, and beryl. The process was successfully applied to other domestic pegmatites and a spodumene flotation-plant tailing containing about 0.5 percent beryl. The method comprised soap flotation of the spodumene, using combinations of sodium fluoride and lignin sulfonate as conditioning agents to recover 80 to 85 percent of the contained lithia in concentrates assaying over 6 percent Li20. About 80 percent or more of the beryl was retarded in the spodumene tailing. The beryl subsequently was activated, floated, and cleaned in a secondary circuit to yield beryl concentrates containing 6 to 7 percent BeO. The tests also demonstrated that a good recovery of high-grade mica could be produced.

Is a shaft the same as a tunnel and can it be approached in the same manner for design and construction? The most obvious difference between a shaft and a tunnel is that of orientation; whereas a tunnel is commonly near horizontal or slightly dipping, a shaft is commonly vertical or steeply inclined. As a result, design and construction methods employed for tunneling, in general, cannot be directly applied to shafts, although some of the basic concepts of behavior are quite similar. Many of the shafts that have been sunk in various parts of the world are owned by private mining companies. Each company has generally accumulated years of experience in shaft sinking and mining techniques pertinent to its particular geographic location. When a new shaft is to be sunk or an existing shaft deepened, the tendency often seems to be to continue to use the methods that have been used successfully in the past.

IN the past few years several papers have appeared dealing with different aspects of the oxidation of dilute alloys, especially with respect to the formation of internal oxides or subscales. Subscale has been defined1 as that layer or zone of oxide particles precipitated in a matrix of metallic metal in which the oxide particles are dispersed uniformly and occur by diffusion of the oxygen inward from the metal surface. Alloys composed of a solvent metal more noble than the alloying elements are subject to subscaling or internal oxidation. In these alloys the solute must be present in such quantities that if the alloy is exposed to an oxidizing atmosphere at elevated temperatures, the rate of diffusion of the oxygen into the metal will be greater than the rate of diffusion of the solute outward. There is a composition range of the iron-silicon system that falls into this classification. Knowledge of the nature and rates of oxidation of iron-silicon alloys is of great commercial importance, but very little information of this nature is available. Darken2 recently has made calculations to show the limits of concentration of silicon for which subscales are produced in iron-silicon alloys; however, the main thesis of his paper was to analyze and to explain the already existing data. The purpose of this paper is to present the effect of com position, temperature, time, and atmosphere on the type of scale-metal layer obtained and to give some qualitative indication of the effect of these variables on the rates of oxidation. Since this paper is a study of silicon steels that are available commercially, extremely low-silicon and high-silicon alloys are not included. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys used in the experiment were taken from heats of silicon steel that ranged in analysis from 0.70 to 5.8 per cent silicon. This composition range takes in most of the commercial silicon steels. In Table I are listed the compositions of alloys used. Other than iron and silicon, the alloys normally contained approximately the following impurities: carbon, 0.03 per cent; manganese, 0.07; phosphorus, 0.008; sulphur, 0.02; copper, 0.07; tin, 0.01, and from nil to a trace of chromium, nickel and copper. All of the alloys used were melted in open-hearth furnaces, except where otherwise noted, and were hot-rolled to 0.100-in. plate. Samples approximately 1/2 in. square were then cut from these materials. So that the surface conditions of the samples used for oxidation would be standardized, each sample was ground through 000 emery paper immediately before oxidation. Two different techniques were employed in carrying out the oxidizing treatments. One consisted simply of heating the samples with free access to air. Recent developments in the design of concentration plants have reflected the increased recognition that has been given to the economic and metallurgical advantages of autogenous grinding. This has manifested itself in the increasing adoption of primary auto genous grinding in iron ore 'beneficiation plants in North America. Table 1 lists eleven major iron ore beneficiation plants which have either been put in operation since 1961 or are under construction at present. Seven out of these eleven plants have adopted primary autogenous grinding. Four of them have coarse grinding mills (8 to 14 mesh) and three have fine grinding primary circuits (48 to 65 mesh). Their nominal capacity totals 26. 2 million ltpy of concentrates or pellets, representing very nearly 75% of the aggregate capacity 135. 3 million ltpy) of the eleven concentrators listed. For a long time there was a tendency to consider that primary autogenous grinding was only applicable to suitable coarse grained ores, However, extensive testing of a very wide variety of ores, and actual operating performance in several commercial plants, seem to have established beyond reasonable doubt, that the majority of mineral ores which the beneficiation engineer may be called upon to process can be ground autogenously. The basis for the selection of autogenous or conventional grinding mills, becomes principally economic and depends on the liberation characteristics of the ores under consideration and their relative hardness and grindability.

The explosion hazard of methane-air mixtures has become an increasingly serious mine planning problem, and an advance assessment of methane gas potential can therefore be essential for a safe and economic mine development pro- gram. As part of its coal mine health and safety program, the Bureau of Mines has developed a simple, inexpensive test to measure the methane content of coal samples obtained from exploration cores. The gas content of coal per unit weight as determined by the direct method test can be used as a basis for a preliminary estimate of mine ventilation requirements, and to determine if degasification of the coalbed in advance of mining should be considered. Since the Bureau began measuring the gas content of coal samples in 1972, experience has led to equipment and procedural changes, the most significant of which has been the development of a ball mill for crushing the coal sample to release the residual gas at the end of the desorption test period. This revised procedure replaces the crushing box and graphical methods described in earlier Bureau publications. The results of 583 direct method tests are summarized in tabular form. These results include data on the gas content of 125 coalbeds in 15 States.

In Broken Hill, Northern Rhodesia, two water jacket lead furnaces have been in operation for the past three years. The furnaces were erected in war time, and only absolute essentials were procurable. The water for the jackets was obtained from wells adjacent to the works, in a dolomite formation. There being no water-softening plant, except a small one capable of treating water for the power plant only, this water was found to make a heavy scale in the jacket. During 1917 several jackets were burnt through, resulting in serious trouble and loss of output. In order to avoid this, furnaces were stopped twice a month for 8 hours and scale was removed as far as possible. In addition to the scale trouble during the summer months, a green slime grew in the supply tanks and occasionally became detached from the tank and collected in the cocks near the jackets. This caused risk to the jackets and was difficult to remove without a stoppage of the furnace. In 1918, bundles of wattle bark were placed in the hot well at the rate of one ton per month. These extracted the tannin and added from 0.5 to one part of tannin per 100,000 to the circulating water. The hot water was cooled over a brushwood cooling tower and returned to the supply tanks. The well water required to, make up the wastage was estimated at 40,000 gal per day.

A previous report of the Bureau of Mines dealt with the toxicity of dichlorodifluoromethane5, a new refrigerant that has a remarkably low toxicity. Continued research by the Prigidaire Corporation6 and toxicological experiments performed in the Laboratory of Applied Physiology of the University of Cincinnati7 revealed another organic fluoride, dichlorotetrafluoroethane, whose toxicity also appeared to be of a very low order and whose physical-and chemical properties make it suitable for refrigeration purposes. In addition to low toxicity, safety in its use is further enhanced by its physical properties, which permit the design of equipment that operates at comparatively low pressures and hence mitigates the dangers and problems of leakage. The investigation described in this report was performed by the Bureau of Mines at the request and with the cooperation of the Frigidaire Corporation.
