Observations of pillar conditions in limestone mines showed that the presence of weak bands in the limestone can result in pillar damage at stresses that are lower than one would otherwise expect. The objective of this National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health study was to investigate the mechanism of failure caused by the presence of weak bands by using a series of numerical models based on realistic physical properties. The effect of the weak bands on pillar strength was also investigated by developing a series of pillar models with different width-to-height ratios and determining their strength by simulating a servo-controlled loading condition. The material properties of the bands and the limestone were varied and their effects on pillar strength were determined. Model results demonstrated failure development similar to the pillars observed in the field. The weak bands were seen to develop tensile stresses in the limestone as they extrude under increasing stress. The limestone fails in tension at a much lower stress than its expected uniaxial compressive strength. The results showed the load bearing capacity of the pillars can be reduced significantly by the presence of multiple thin weak bands. The degree of strength reduction is largely dependent on the compressive strength, the frictional resistance and the thickness of the weak bands. Single weak bands do not affect pillars as severely as multiple bands. However, the model results show that a single thick weak band, which comprises more than about 2 percent of the pillar height, can cause a significant reduction in pillar strength. The weakening effect of the bands become less severe as the pillar width-to-height ratio is increased. Field observation of spalling and failure associated with weak bands in limestone pillars show that the failure mechanism in the models resembles the observed failure. The model results provide insight into the important factors affecting pillar strength in the presence of weak banded materials.

Fully mechanized top caving mining of steeply inclined extra-thick seams with variable angles has complex roof rock movement, failure, caving, and filling mechanisms. Moreover, the variable-angle coal seams make rock–equipment stability control challenging. We analyzed rock deformation and failure mechanisms, overburden bearing structures, and working characteristics of supports through physical simulations, field tests, and theoretical analysis of the no. 120210 working face of Zaoquan Coal Mine. Overburden rock movement has distinct regional characteristics, with a large caving height (to the main roof layer) in the upper area, and lower caving height (to the lower main roof) in the lower area. Support loading is regional and unbalanced along the inclined direction. The critical layer of overlying strata migrates, and bearing structures formed by breaking the critical layer exhibit cross-layer generalization along the inclination. The upper region has a cantilever beam structure in the basic roof rock layer; the lower region has an inclined masonry structure with multistage ladders in the breakage basic roof rock layer. Application of a false-inclined working face layout with the tailgate ahead of the headgate and an arc arrangement (radius 28.65 m, arc length 10–20 m) in variable angle areas, and regional control of support working resistance and top-coal caving amounts, control regional failure overburden. Safe and efficient mining was achieved, with the monthly production and recovery rates reaching 344,900 t and 85.86%, respectively. Our results expand the scope of fully mechanized top caving mining and have important theoretical and technological significance.

Derjaguin and Dukhin (1961) were the first to develop a model for bubble-particle interaction in flotation from first principles by considering the surface forces in wetting (or flotation) films. The model predicted that the energy barriers to bubble-particle attachment arise from the ζ-potentials of fine particles, which corroborates well with an earlier work of Fuerstenau (1957) reported for the flotation of quartz using dodecyl ammonium acetate (DAA) as collector. In the present work, a series of surface force measurements have been conducted by accurately monitoring the changes in bubble curvature during bubble-silica surface interactions. The curvature changes are then used to determine the capillary force, which is the sum of the hydrodynamic and surface forces. By subtracting the former that can also be determined from the curvature changes, one obtains the surface forces (or disjoining pressure). The results obtained as functions of pH and collector concentrations show that control of the ζ-potentials of bubbles relative to those of the silica surfaces is critical for maximizing the negative disjoining pressure, which is conducive to promoting bubble-particle attachment in flotation.

The necessity for studying this problem has been realized more generally in recent years, and in August 1934 an agreement was made between the Kansas State Board of Health and the United States Bureau of Mines to conduct a cooperative technical study of methods of brine disposal. To date one paper in the technical press4/ and three reports5/6/ have been published in which are given results of studies carried on under this cooperative agreement. In the Mid-Continent fields, the methods used most generally for handling oil-field brines are: (1) Impounding in evaporation ponds; (2) controlled diversion into surface streams; and (3) injection into subsurface formations through wells assigned for this purpose. Various States recognize one or more of the methods as legally authorized procedure. Em função das condições desejadas no processamento do aço no Forno Elétrico a Arco (FEA), a escória final tem teor elevado de FeO, contém fósforo e pode ter, ainda, alto teor de alumina. Para controlar o consumo de desoxidantes, formar uma escória adequada no forno panela (FP) e evitar a reversão de fósforo, é importante minimizar a passagem da escória do FEA para a panela, no vazamento. Assim, é essencial conhecer a quantidade de escória passante para o controle e previsão adequados do processamento no FP. Neste trabalho é apresentada uma metodologia para, através de um balanço de massa levando em conta medidas de composição realizadas durante o processo, determinar a quantidade de escória passante e o volume de escória no final do processamento no FP. É empregado um método numérico simples e demonstra-se que os resultados obtidos são suficientemente adequados para melhor conhecimento e controle do processo por parte do engenheiro responsável, possibilitando gerar informações precisas para cálculos de correções (exemplo: formulação de uma nova escória sintética, correção de desgaste de refratários, ajuste de basicidade, etc.).

En ese sentido, el presente texto señala el análisis económico y tecnógico de Latinoamérica frente a la demandas de tres potencias industriales (EE.UU., Europa Occidental y Japón) que, al mismo tiempo son los principales clientes. Para mantener su ritmo de desarrollo industrial, Latinoamérica necesita divisas provenientes de la exportación de materias primas, donde la conservación de los mercados y el aprovechamiento de los mismos. Asimismo, es necesario un mayor grado de elaboración y purificación de materias primas y que la producción de productos minerales sea de alta calidad a precios competitivos.

To enable ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) to be used on an equal weight basis with nitroglycerine explosives, smaller diameter bore holes became necessary with consequent modifications to drill steel and burden on holes. Detonation of AN-FO in small diameter holes proved successful both with and without primer charges but some alterations were required to adapt anoloders to the smaller holes.Important factors in training all operators in the new charging method were the retention of improved fragmentation, avoidance of excessive overbreak and keeping wall rock dilution to an absolute minimum. The successful storage of ammonium nitrate in climatic conditions with daily temperature fluctuations above and below the critical 90°F has been achieved.INTRODUCTIONTechnical aspects of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-Fa) blasting agent are well covered in recent literature. This paper deals primarily with the manner of its introduction as the principal explosive underground at Great Boulder Gold Mines Ltd. and with the many problems encountered in the process. [THE BUREAU OF MINES receives many requests for information regarding the low-temperature carbonization properties of American coals. This report presents in collected form the results of Fischer-Schrader bench-scale, low-temperature carbonization assays at 500° C. made by the Chemistry and Physics Section at the Pittsburgh station of the Bureau of Mines. Most of the assays were made of coals tested in connection with a survey of gas and coke-making properties of American coals,4 which was started in 1928 by the Bureau in cooperation with the American Gas Association. Other coals were assayed in connection with miscellaneous investigations. Since 1930 about 400 samples of coal were assayed from nearly every coal-producing State, Alaska, and British Columbia, Canada. The results of the tests on about two-thirds of the coals are scattered through more than 50 separate publications. This paper summarizes the data in the published reports as well as all unpublished data obtained to January 1, 1956. "A reliable determination of the in-placed cement factor, as defined by mass of cement over volume of final element of treated soil, allows the optimization of cement usage to achieve treated soil requirements. Cement determination tests were performed on soil-cement samples, both fresh (as per ASTM D5982) and hardened (as per ASTM C1084). This paper reviews the calibration work required for the D5982 determination of cement content by the heat of hydration method used on soil-cement samples obtained by wet-grabbing. Using the correlation curves in the field provides a rapid assessment of cement content hence optimizing the cement injection rate to match laboratory tests previously conducted. Cement determination tests on hardened soil-cement specimens from wet-grabs and cores were performed using the oxides method. Samples, both cored and wet-grabbed, were tested in a given cement-treated element, and in different soils to inform on the expected variation in cement content from field installation. Results indicate that both cement determination methods are valid for forensically determining cement contents and that they provide better assessment than the conventional field reporting methods. The methods can be used to optimise the cement usage as well as for Quality Assurance, especially when coring quality is poor.INTRODUCTIONThe degree of improvement, and inherent strength, which is attained in a deep-mixed soil is a function of many factors. The binder type, the existing soil, the mixing conditions and the curing conditions are the categories of factors influencing the strength of a given cement-treated soil as agreed by the deep mixing community and as summarized by the Coastal Development of Technology [CDIT] (2012). Given a site with existing soils and conditions requiring soil improvement using a given binder, the designer and/or contractor can control the mixing conditions. Mixing conditions are inclusive of the degree of mixing, mixing duration and the quantity of binder. Once a deep mixing method has been chosen to mix optimally the in-situ soil, the quantity of binder is the only remaining factor to be optimized. The quantity of binder, in the construction industry is commonly referred to as the field binder factor [ar] and defined by the mass of binder over the volume of soil treated with kg/m3 as unit. In research, the quantity of binder is referred to as the binder content [Cc] and expressed as a ratio of the mass of binder over the mass of dry soil mixed."

Blast-induced tunnel overbreak prediction in the past has been based on peak particle velocity measured far from the blast site with necessary extrapolation. This has often resulted in suggesting higher damage threshold levels of Acceleration/PPV for overbreak prediction (Bogdanhoff, 1995, Holmberg and Persson, 1997, Murthy and Dey, 2002). These, site-specific far-field blast vibration studies, have also revealed that predicted PPV levels for overbreak could lie in the range of 700-5000 mm/s, an extremely wide range to generalize. Experimental blasts were conducted, in an underground metal mine located in eastern India, with an objective to study the level of acceleration /peak particle velocity generated in tunnel blasting. Accelerometers and tri-axial geophones with measuring ranges upto 500 g, 254 mm/s respectively, were mounted on the tunnel floor close to the blast face, with sensor distances varying from 15.25m to 36.10m. Due to straight faces the measuring distance could not be reduced further anticipating, in particular, cable damage. The equipment used was of M/s Instantel Inc., Canada. The blast pattern used was burn cut with large dia relief holes providing the required free face. The blast hole depth was 1.8m. Tunnel overbreak was measured using a telescopic offset rod fabricated at Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, India.

The depletion of the richest ore deposits and the increase in number of mining projects involving deposits with complex mineralogy, higher competence and lower grade has led to an eminent need for improving understanding on multicomponent behaviour in mineral processing. One particularly relevant case is the ball milling of itabirite iron ores fed to the processing plant of Minas-Rio operation in Brazil. Dealing with the two main mineralogical components of the ore, namely hematite and quartz, the operation faces some challenges to improve understanding on how the two components behave in the process. Mathematical models have showed potential to give support in this task, but its applications to describe this type of industrial-scale grinding is still missing. The present work demonstrates the application of a multi-component ball mill model to simulate a closed ball mill circuit with hydrocyclones using the commercial software Integrated Extraction Simulator (IES). Model was calibrated on the basis of bench-scale tests and industrial surveys. Multi-component simulation results are then compared to those considering a single component in the feed, demonstrating the value and great insights that can be achieved by using the former in optimising plant operation.

O aço inoxidável duplex combina as propriedades mecânicas da ferrita e a resistência à corrosão da austenita, sendo muito utilizado em aplicações industriais que requerem um bom desempenho. Quando submetido a deformações intensas, a austenita transforma-se parcialmente em martensita, aumentando a resistência do aço. Quando o aço é recozido, essa transformação é revertida e a martensita se transforma em austenita, ocasionando um refino de grão do material. Fases secundárias formadas durante o recozimento podem prejudicar suas propriedades mecânicas e corrosivas. Nesse sentido, o objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da temperatura de recozimento na resistência à corrosão do aço inoxidável duplex UNS S32304 laminado a frio. O aço foi submetido à laminação a frio, com deformação de 60%, e posteriormente recozido nas temperaturas de 600°C, 700°C, 800°C e 900°C por um tempo de 0,5 h. A resistência à corrosão foi estudada através da técnica de polarização potenciodinâmica. A laminação a frio promoveu a formação de martensita induzida por deformação (SIM) e a reversão parcial começou a ser observada após recozimento a 600ºC. A ocorrência de SIM promoveu significativa diminuição do potencial de pite e o aumento da temperatura de recozimento aumentou a resistência à corrosão localizada.

Comprehensive utilization of the copper associated with the complex lead and zinc sulphide ore is a recognized and difficult technical issue in ore dressing field. Qi Baoshan lead-zinc mine is a typical complex copper-lead-zinc polymetallic ore deposit and difficult to process. The application of the. traditional process is not able to make the substantive progress. According to its mineralogical characteristics, the association of copper minerals with lead minerals is very close, and their particle sizes are very fine, and the copper and lead minerals are partially oxidized. Based on the laboratory tests and comparison between different process flowsheets, preferential flotation of copper minerals, being suitable for this ore, was chosen to recover copper. The separation of copper from lead applies the following technology: regrinding middlings with cyclones to classify, which improves copper lead mineral liberation, and increases copper and lead recovery; using new high-efficient collector with good selectivity, which is able to float copper minerals; and non-toxic combined depressant which depresses lead minerals. The above technical innovation, optimizing the process flowsheet, overcoming the complex traditional process flow with high production cost, obtained good technical and economic indicator. The difficult technical problem of copper lead separation was solved smoothly. After successful performance of the bench-scale experiment, commercial-scale test was carried out. In industrial trial, a copper concentrate containing Cu18.60 %, Pb7.40 % and Zn2.50 % was obtained with copper recovery of 58.49%, lead concentrate quality improved largely. The process opened up an unique path for the comprehensive recovery of Cu from similar lead and zinc non-ferrous metals mineral to comprehensively recover copper.

The heats of combustion of fuels are determined in the laboratory by means of a calorimeter, usually of the oxygen bomb type. A known weight of the fuel is burned in an atmosphere of oxygen under approximately 400 pounds pressure in a heavy metal container-the bomb- and the heat evolved is imparted to a definite quantity of water. From the rise in temperature, measured by means of a Beckmann thermometer, and other data incidental to the determination, the heat value of the sample can be calculated. On paper, the method appears simple indeed, but in practice the determination of the heat of combustion is one of the most difficult of the various coal analyses. This h as led to considerable investigational work in order to obtain formula: whereby calorific values of solid fuels could be calculated from proximate analysis data al one. The proximate analysis of a fuel consists of the determination of moisture, ash, and volatile matter, with fixed carbon by difference. Sulphur determinations properly belong to the ultimate analysis, but in this section of the country, where the sulphur content of the coal is comparatively high, a request for the proximate analysis of a fuel implies the determination of the sulphur as well.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been investigating methods and technology that may improve safety and production when applied to existing mining machines. Toward those goals, the Bureau has developed navigation systems that provide machine positional information while in the production area. This research has been limited in the past because the Bureau had only one type of mining machine to do experiments. Addressing this problem, the Bureau, along with Carnegie Mellon University, has developed a generic vehicle emulator, in the form of a wheeled vehicle with an onboard computer, known as the Locomotion Emulator, that provides a software-selectable vehicle emulation package. Preliminary testing by the Bureau has shown that the emulator can accurately imitate the maneuvers of the software selected vehicle type. Now the Bureau can test their navigation systems on different vehicle types without having to procure each of the vehicles. This report completely describes the emulator as well as all the modes in which it can be operated.

A computer model has been generated to evaluate speech intelligibility of individuals wearing conventional and electronic hearing protectors. For speakers talking at normal levels in noise levels of 65 db(Lp) or less, it was found that conventional hearing protectors significantly reduced speech intelligibility. Under the same conditions, electronic protectors provided scores equal to those for the unprotected individuals while providing protection from high noise levels. Therefore, electronic hearing protection is valuable in areas where high noise level is intermittent.

Individual mineral cyclone performance curves were determined for the four major minerals at two lead-zinc concentrators. Sizing was by screen and cyclosizer down to approximately 10 um, with lead , zinc and iron as saying of each size fraction. The performance curves were similar in shape and located according to the mineral specific gravity, Pm. The curves displayed a discontinuity at the fine end and a magnitude of short-circuiting of fines to the underflow which increased with Pm. Mass fraction of water to the underflow was only a guide to this short-circuiting. Sharpness of separation seemed in dependent of Pm. An inflection in the over-all performance curve was shown to be a consequence of the individual component mineral performance. A general relationship was observed showing that the flow regime of classification changed from laminar/ intermediate to turbulent with increasing cyclone feed size. Individual mineral size reduction for the four major minerals at one of the concentrators was also determined. Size reduction of the silica was greater than that of the galena, in contradiction to their accepted relative grind-ability. The observation did correlate with silica being much coarser than the galena in the feed to the ball mill. It is suggested that the silica acted as a buffer to the galena.

The reduced need for traditionally trained and educated personnel in the mining industry is systemic to the changing mining industry. Our universities and other training institutions are doing just fine meeting the traditional skill needs required by the industry. But are the skill needs going to be the same in the near future? The answer may be NO!! Mining is changing: increased liabilities and costs of environmental and safety issues; lower grades of minerals in traditional mining activities; the advent of new bio-chemical processes and robotic equipment as more productive and economic alternatives; and, larger more sophisticated and automatic equipment. Engineering is more specific, accurate, precise and expensive. Measurement is more thorough and timely of progress, production, costs, and productivity. And we will be engaging in more undersea mining, possibly space bases processing, less human interaction, and more remote control of events than was ever thought possible in the past. This paper presents several of the systemic changes that are presently and will continue to change the face of mining. It will identify area where education and management will have to address these changes.

O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar e comparar a composição química e microestrutura de dois fabricantes (nacional e importado) de haste femoral fabricados em aço inoxidável austenítico ABNT NBR ISO 5832-9. As análises químicas dos principais elementos foram realizadas utilizando espectrometria de emissão ótica por descarga luminescente. A microestrutura das hastes foi caracterizada por microscopia óptica, microscopia eletrônica de varredura e difração de raios X. Medidas de dureza Vickers também foram realizadas neste estudo comparativo. As hastes nacionais e importadas exibiram pequena quantidade de partículas de nitreto (fase Z) dispersas na matriz austenítica e tamanhos de grão similares da austenita. Por outro lado, o aumento de 32% observado nos resultados de dureza da haste importada em relação à haste nacional foi atribuído às diferenças de composição química entre estas hastes. Foram identificadas microinclusões ricas em Al nas hastes importadas e microinclusões ricas em Mg nas hastes nacionais. Embora tenham sido observadas algumas diferenças entre as hastes nacionais e importadas, ambas atenderam os critérios de composição e microestrutura da norma ABNT NBR ISO 5832-9.
