The fourteenth National First-Aid and Mine Rescue Contest we;; held at the State fairgrounds, Columbus, Ohio, October 2, 3, and 4, 1951. The meet, the first such event in 21 years, was under the auspices of the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, and the Joseph A Holmes Safety Association and was sponsored by the National Coal Association, the United Mine Workers of America, and various State mine-inspection departments. The cooperating agencies that contributed to make the meet a success, in addition to the National Coal Association and the United Mine Workers of America, were the Kentucky Department of Mines and Minerals, Ohio Division of Mines, West Virginia Department of Mines, Pennsylvania Department of Mines, and the Columbus Convention Bureau. SUMMARY Fourteen teams from 6 States participated in the mine rescue contest, and 55 teams from 9 States competed in the first-aid contest. Only one of these teams entered as a combination team, that is, participating in both the mine rescue and first-aid contests. The States represented and the number of teams from each State are listed in table 1.

The traditional comminution circuit is a major consumer of energy ? both as electrical energy and through consumption of media and wear resistant liners. Up to 40% of electrical energy con-sumed at a mine site is attributed to comminution however only a few percent of this energy is used in the generation of new surfaces from size reduction. This paper describes the evaluation of modifications using simulation models based on two operating comminution circuits. The aim of these modifications is to decrease both the amount of electrical energy consumed in the size reduction process, known as direct energy, as well as to decrease the consumption of grinding consumables such as steel grinding media and mill liners, designated as indirect energy. The approach is two-fold: ??Employ, where possible, autogenous grinding techniques to eliminate the need for grinding media and reduce mill liner wear. ??Optimise the use of the grinding energy distribution in the comminution circuit by using more energy efficient grinding devices to target typically problematic features of a comminution circuit such as critical size material from the primary mill and overgrinding in the secondary mill. The investigations show that significant total energy savings, as high as 50% in some cases, can be achieved by employing the techniques described while maintaining circuit throughput and product size. Investigations also show potential benefits in downstream flotation processes as the product size distribution generated from the eco-efficient circuit is generally ?narrower? in shape for improved flotation performance and containing less material in the coarse fraction for overall better liberation.

Em seguida foram avaliados os resultados alcançados ou, nos casos de projetos não concluídos, os potenciais ganhos projetados. Desta forma pode-se avaliar e concluir que os custos de grande parte das iniciativas de apelo inovador, com foco no aumento de produtividade, trazem ganhos substanciais ao negócio, não só financeiro, mas também no quesito de segurança ao homem, e qualidade do produto ou serviço prestado.

The Bureau of Mines experimentally burned Pittsburgh Seam coal and other combustible materials found in mines in order to obtain a better knowledge of their emission products. These experiments were conducted in the Bureau's intermediate-scale fire tunnel, which simulates environ-mental conditions in underground mines. Smoke characteristics, gas concentrations, mass loss, and ventilation were measured. From these values, heat-release rates, particle sizes, obscuration rates, combustion yields, and production constants were calculated. This information was sought as part of a comprehensive study of combustible materials that will ultimately advance the design of more efficient fire detection and suppression systems. The coal combustion measurements presented in this report, together with previous analyses of wood and transformer fluid fires form a data base by which future studies of other mine combustibles can be compared.

A campaign was undertaken during the greater part of 2001 at Noranda’s Brunswick mine concentrator to investigate the role of gas (air) superficial rate (Jg) distribution to the cells in the final Zn cleaning stage (bank of seven cells), i.e. the Jg profile. Three profiles were tested: “balanced” (each cell with same Jg), “increasing” (from cell 1 to 7 proportionally), and “decreasing,” along with an “as found” profile in a parallel control bank. The experimental design allowed for two confounding factors, changes in ore type and circulating load. The increasing profile consistently gave the best metallurgy (down-the-bank grade / recovery). The reason for improved performance was the response of the first cells in the bank where the increasing profile gave the highest selectivity of sphalerite against nonsulphide gangue (NSG). The other profiles gave lower selectivity and higher zinc recovery in the first cells, which combined to reduce overall bank performance. The higher selectivity with the Increasing profile is attributed to the low gas rate in the first cells reducing water recovery and hence limiting entrainment of NSG. The increasing profile was subsequently configured for all four stages in the zinc cleaner circuit.

This bulletin is a revision of Bulletin 63 and is published by the Bureau of Mines in order that purchasers of coal for Government, State, municipal, or private use may be informed regarding advances or refinements in sampling coal deliveries and preparing specifications for the purchase of coal. The purchase of coal by the Government under specifications depending on the heating value of the coal, its content of ash and of moisture, and other considerations, rather than upon the reputation or trade name of the coal, was based on the fuel investigations begun by the Technologic Branch of the United States Geological Survey in 1904. The plan was first adopted by the Treasury Department in 1906. Since then the plan, variously modified in form, but the same in principle, has been gradually adopted by other departments until, at present, of the coal used by the Government, the total value of which approximates $8,000,000 annually, more than half is purchased under specifications. The Government publications dealing with the adoption by the Government of the specification plan, the number of contracts awarded on that basis, and the quality of the coal delivered under such contracts in the several fiscal years covered by the reports are given in publioations a listed at the end of this bulletin. Under the authority of acts of Congress making appropriations for analyzing and testing fuels belonging to or for the use of the United States Government, a laboratory is maintained at the headquarters of the Bureau of Mines, Washington, D. C., where samples representing deliveries of coal purchased under specifications for Government use are analyzed and tested. At this laboratory more than 1,200 samples have been analyzed and tested in one month. With the complete equipment and the efficient force employed, the analytical work has been so perfected that the analyses and heating-value tests of the samples received are as accurate as may be reasonably expected in laboratory work of this nature. One of the serious drawbacks to the general adoption of the specification method for the purchase of coal is the difficulty of obtaining at reasonable cost samples of coal that can be considered fairly representative of the commercial product delivered in wagons, railroad cars, or ships. Therefore the method of taking and preparing samples for shipment to the laboratory has been given fully as much care as the making of the analyses and tests, and a general plan of collecting samples fairly representative of the delivered coal has been evolved through various modifications and improvements based on experience and increased knowledge of the physical and chemical characteristics of the various coals that are purchased by the Government. The method that is in general use by the Government is described in the following pages. In connection with studies of the coal deposits of the country, of the best methods of preventing waste in mining, and of increasing efficiency in the utilization of coal belonging to or for the use of the Government, geologists and engineers of the United States Geological Survey and of the Bureau of Mines have visited more than 2,500 coal mines scattered through all of the coal-producing States and Territories. From each mine 2 to 8 or more samples were taken, the number depending upon the size of the mine and its output. The analyses and descriptions of the samples collected up to the end of the fiscal year 1913 are published in Bureau of Mines bulletins 22 a and 85,b and those of samples collected in the fiscal years 1914 and 1915 are presented in a bulletin that will soon be published by the bureau. A study of the analyses of these samples and of the samples taken from cars shipped from a number of the same mines shows that the mine samples are as a rule of higher grade than the average commercial shipments, particularly with respect to containing a lower percentage of ash and having a correspondingly higher heating value. This difference is due to the fact that the Government inspector, proceeding on the basis of what can be done by a good miner, usually removes more of the partings of bone, slate, and other extraneous matter from his mine samples than the average miner does in ordinary practice, the aim of the miner being to get the maximum number of tons past the tipple inspection, as his earnings are based on his output. The average miner, therefore, does not always take as much care as he might in rejecting the impurities. The use of pellet feed to adjust the chemical quality of the sinter is an alternative to the depletion of iron ore reserves. However, the addition of ultrafine in the sintering process can cause decrease of permeability and consequent drop in machine productivity. In this context, the present work investigated the addition of natural and ground pellet feed, evaluating its effects on cold agglomeration for sintering and quality of quasi-particles produced. Eight typical mixtures with industrial composition were produced in the laboratory, replacing Sinter Feed with different percentages of Natural Pellet Feed (NPF, 91% <150 μm) and Ground Pellet Feed (GPF, 83% <44 μm). The mixtures were subjected to cold agglomeration tests and the quasi-particles produced were evaluated by screening, shatter test, permeability test and disintegration into primary particles analysis. There was a decrease in the mean particle size of quasi-particles and reduce in permeability with addition of the ultrafines. The addition of NPF favored the layering mechanism in larger quasi-particles. The coalescence mechanism occurred for larger additions of NPF and GPF, being more expressive for GPF additions.

The flotation chemistry of the commercial INCO matte separation process was investigated. The slow cooling of Bessemer converter matte forms discrete phases of Cu2S and Ni3S2 and a Cu-Ni alloy. After magnetically removing the alloy, the Cu2S and Ni3S2 are separated by flotation at pH 12.4 (saturated lime) using diphenyl guanidine (DPG) as both collector and frother. DPG has been used exclusively in this flotation process because of its unusual selectivity for copper minerals. The surface product resulting from chemisorption of DPG onto the Cu2S was identified as the double salt Cu(DPG)2SO4,.CU(DPG)2(OH)2. The adsorption followed Langmuir behaviour up to a monolayer coverage. In the absence of DPG, the rapid adsorption of oxygen by Cu2S in flotation pulps was observed. The surface product was identified as the insoluble basic copper sulfate CuSO4.3Cu(OH)2 with the production of sulfate ion. In the presence of DPG, the oxidation reaction appears to be suppressed. The frothing properties of DPG and commercial frothers were compared. DPG is not a powerful frother. Batch flotation tests confirmed that DPG is a highly selective collector when compared to most sulfhydryl collectors.

This section was obtained last year during an examination of the iron-ore resources of the Rich Patch Mountain region and along Craig&apos;s creek valley. The geological members below the Oriskany and Lower Helderberg are exposed along the gap in a beautiful arch, while the higher formations appear in a more or less disturbed state on both sides of this arch, and are partly covered by dèbris. I have thought it of interest to the Institute to reproduce the drawing of this section at the gap which I made in my note-book at the time of my examination; those parts of the section, which lie at both sides of the arch, are only approximated. I give also a number of notes and measurements, referring to the Clinton formation and especially to the characteristics of the fossiliferous ore-seam opened in the various tunnels along the arch (see section). I. In Tunnel C: For the first 110 to 120 feet to second shute, we find the ore only here and there in small deposits, and interchanging with, or changing into, either a very siliceous limestone or a sandstone. About 10 feet beyond shute we have : Sandstone roof. Clay-slate, 211/2 inches Brown lean ore, 1 inch. Sandy clay, 3 to 31/4 inches. 1. Dark .brown ore, 3 inches. 2. "Interest in the fine structure of soots and carbon blacks is motivated by a variety of possible applications. The structure provides information on the origins of the particles and on their adsorptive and reactive properties. This paper describes a method for quantification of the structure of soots and carbon blacks based on direct electron microscopic observation followed by image analysis of these materials. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) provides a very detailed observation of particle structure. The differences in soot structure, because of its complexity, may not be easily quantifiable with the human eye; therefore, high-level computer software has been used to manipulate HRTEM images. This technique involves the application of fast Fourier transforms (FFT) to single particles and the measurement of characteristic parameters such as interplanar spacings and crystallite sizes from these particles. The methodology and application of this characterization technique are presented here. Results are shown for dif¬ferent samples obtained from soot and carbon black particles selected to illustrate the capabilities of the methodology. Quantitative information can be obtained on structural characteristics, e.g., interplanar spacing, circularity, orientation, elongation, and length distribution of lattice fringes, as well as on the fractional coverage of the extracted pattern. c 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.This paper presents a combination of techniques for recognizing and classifying different carbonaceous materials, using their structural morphology. A new method to assess and quantify the parameters which define such structures is proposed and discussed. The technique is based on the use of HRTEM (high-resolution transmission electron microscopy) and computational image analysis.It is well-known that carbonaceous materials like graphite, soots, coals, cokes, chars, etc. possess characteristic structural appearances which can vary from mostly random or amorphous to a perfectly ordered graphitic crystalline structure (Buseck and Bo-Jun, 1985; Buseck et al., 1987). The carbon structure has been variously described as turbostratic (Oberlin, 1989) or as crumpled sheets (Rouzaud et al., 1991) to indicate that parallel layering, reminiscent of graphite, is observed over dimensions of nanometers, but that these planes or crystallites show disorder over larger scales. The degree of order of such structures is strongly dependent on the thermal treatment of the material as well as on the composition of the source of the carbonaceous material. The value of the electron microscope in studying the morphology of such materials has been well-established, and abundant information is available (Ishiguro et al., 1991; Lahaye and Prado, 1978; Buseck, 1992).The use of HRTEM has brought further insight into this matter. Qualitative assessment of the structural order of such materials has been attempted over a long period of time in order to differentiate between various sources or treatments. There is, to date, no successful method available for quantifying the structural characteristics of various carbonaceous materials. This paper presents a technique which is able to recognize dif-ferent materials and to quantify the structural parameters of those materials using HRTEM and computational image analysis, including pattern recognition techniques.In the case of perfectly ordered graphitic crystals, electron diffraction is widely used for obtaining details on structure. Analysis of diffraction patterns can reveal parameters such as interplanar spacing, d002, crystallite size along the c-axis, Lc, crystal size in the plane of the layers, L., mean number of crystallites, Nc, etc.Complicated electron microscopy methods such as defocusing, tilted illumination, axial illumination, etc., often have to be used in order to characterize complex materials such as randomly oriented crystals in soots and carbons. Physiol. 14): L215-L223, 1996.Previous investigations demonstrated that type II pulmonary epithelial cells regulate extracellular matrix deposition as a function of time in primary culture. In those studies, the matrix fraction was analyzed as a whole. The present work focused on two components of the type II cell matrix, fibronectin and laminin. These glycoproteins have differing effects on differentiation of type II cells in primary culture. Fibronectin synthesis was quantitated between day 1 and day 6 in the cells, matrix, and medium; laminin synthesis was quantitated only in the cells. Although total fibronectin synthesis was regulated as a function of time in culture, reaching its greatest value on day 2, the average proportion of newly synthesized fibronectin in the cells (35%), medium (50%), and matrix (15%) remained constant over a 6-day interval. Between day 2 and day 6, the relative abundance of fibronectin messenger RNA increased 6.5-fold. Rates of cellular laminin synthesis did not vary with time in culture. These results support a role for differential regulation of fibronectin and laminin synthesis to determine the composition of the type II cell extracellular matrix. INTERACTIONS BETWEEN THE pulmonary epithelium and alveolar basement membrane may play a role in the physiology and pathophysiology of the lung. Pulmonary epithelial cells and the alveolar basement membrane form one component of the blood-gas diffusion barrier. Integrity of this barrier is crucial to normal lung function. Specific domains of alveolar basement membrane components have been proposed to determine localization of type I and type II pulmonary epithelial cells during lung growth and development, as well as during repair of the alveolar surface after injury (13). In the injured lung, the extent of damage to the epithelium and the underlying basement membrane is thought to be a key factor to determine subsequent repair or fibrotic scarring (3)."

The Metropolitan Water Supply, Sewerage and Drainage Board, Perth, has recently con- structed two major sewerage tunnels in the metropolitan area and a further one is under construction. These tunnels were constructed in sand, sandstone and limestone. The Tamala Limestone is a Pleistocene calcareous dune sand which now varies in com position from loose sand to cemented rock. Investigation techniques included surface mapping, auger and diamond core drilling, seismic refraction geophysics and mechanical testing. The variable nature of the ground caused difficulties in all aspects of the investigation, particularly in core recovery and seismic work. The Beenyup Tunnel, 2.25m in diameter and 3440m long was excavated with a Dosco TBM 1800 machine and shield with precast concrete Charcon Universal bolted segment lining. The Burns Beach Sewer Tunnel, 1.27m in diameter and 860m long was hand excavated with precast reinforced concrete lining pipes jacked continuously behind an excavation

A determinação de características microestruturais como base de controle de qualidade tem demonstrado cada vez mais a sua importância nos processos de aglomeração de minério de ferro. A linha de pesquisa do presente trabalho envolveu o desenvolvimento de técnicas de embutimento de pelotas seccionadas em resina condutora, de desbaste e polimento da superfície das amostras e emprego do microscópio eletrônico de varredura em conjunto com a técnica de Electron Backscattering Difraction. Por meio das técnicas empregadas de microscopia baseadas em parâmetros cristalográficos específicos, foram obtidas ilustrações forescatter e mapas de fases minerais ferríticas, silicatos e óxido de ferro que caracterizam a microestrutura de pelotas tratadas termicamente em forno piloto. O desenvolvimento desta metodologia promove subsídios para estabelecer futuramente uma relação das estruturas observadas em escala microscópica com as propriedades reconhecidas e mapeadas no produto final.

Metal-mine fires in the United States are not of frequent occurrence and relatively for of those that do occur result in loss of life, although many cause heavy property loss or are costly to extinguish. Over a span of years, however, more lives are lost in metal Trines from fires than from any other of the untoward occurrences which afflict metal mining, such as electrical storms, floods, cave-ins, magazine explosions, or strikes. In perhaps more than 90 per cent of the fires. in metal mines&apos; there is no loss of life; hence, the general public, even the general mining public, seldom hears of these fires, though the property loss frequently reaches hundreds of thousands of dollars; on the other end, in some instances the property damage from an underground metal-mine, fire has been negligible and the loss of life comparatively high. In any comprehensive study of metal-mine fires, ventilation is certain to be found a vital factor. The influence of ventilation on fires and the influence of fires on ventilation are of vital importance. In metal-mine fires very few persons meet death from actual contact Pith heat or flame; nearly all fatalities are duo to asphyxiation or suffocation. A well-planned, well-installed, and well-operated mechanical ventilation system is unquestionably one of the best available present-day protections from loss of life and property in case of fire in a metal mine; that this is true is attested by the usual helplessness of mining officials in trying to handled underground fires in a mine that has not had the foresight to install mechanical equipment to control underground air flow. On the other hand, the establishment of high-velocity air currents without sufficient day by day attention to such details as the method of coursing, or controlling, or confining them most certainly tends to increase dangers from fires rather than to aid in the avoidance or elimination of these dangers; the truth of this latter statement is shown by the fact that the greatest, loss of life in metal-mine fires during the past 20 years has been in relatively well-ventilated workings, and in every case the life loss has been due to some more or less trivial or easily remedied defect in the Ventilating system - usually a defect that has had some reference to doors used or supposed to be used to deflect or control air currents.

In order to shorten the time taken to com- plete shield tunnel excavation work, reduce labor costs and to improve safety, an automatic assembly robot system for the segments used has been developed. It was developed in the three years from 1982 until 1984. An experimental assembly system for concrete segments (outer diameter:.3.55m) has been thoroughly tested to confirm that these segments can be fed and assembled automatically (Fig. 1, 2). This report outlines the robot which will be put into practical use in the near future. The robot senses the position of already assem- bled segments by means of position sensors, controls the position and the attitude of the segment to be assembled to allow bolt hole positioning, and completes the automatic assembly of a se;nent by automatically tighten- ing bolts. The six segments which make up one ring can be automatically assembled in about 25 minutes.

"Highland Valley Copper is a conventional truck-shovel mining and flotation concentrator operation located 75 km southwest of Kamloops, British Columbia (Fig. 1).The ore is situated within a porphyry copper deposit and is mined at a rate of 135,000 mt/day from two separate open pits. The nearby mill produces concentrates containing 375 million pounds of copper and 5 million pounds of molybdenum metal yearly. In the Valley pit, head grades are roughly 0.40% Cu at a 0.23% Cu equivalent cut-off. The Valley pit strip ratio currently sits at 0.55:1 with waste quantities made up of separate rock and unconsolidated overburden units. From the mill, concentrates are trucked to nearby Ashcroft and then hauled by rail to ocean port facilities in Vancouver. The mine employs 950 people and is planned to operate until 2009. The operation is a partnership between Teck Cominco (63.9%), BHP Billiton (33.6%), and others (2.5%). Management is shared by the two principal owners and directed by a management committee."

"The International Organization of Standards defines risk as “the effect of uncertainties on achieving objectives (15).” In mining, many uncertainties can influence the outcome of personal or professional objectives and are often difficult to predict. Risk management, the minimization and control of adverse effects from exposure to identified risks, is a well-established concept that can summarized as “being smart about taking chances” (12). Risk management now consists of management processes unique to numerous organizations across many industries, as varying sectors encounter a variety of needs, including the analysis and mitigation of risks related to physical security, product liability, information security, various forms of insurance, regulatory compliance, and workplace safety (12). The reoccurrence of multiple fatality events in the US mining industry, especially the underground coal sector, suggests an opportunity for improved methods of major safety hazard identification, assessment, and mitigation. A risk management approach would include ready identification and mitigation of these risks, inclusive stakeholder engagement, and rapid integration. While many solutions to reducing the risk of mine disasters have been proposed including stricter regulation and improved technology, a comprehensive risk management approach has yet to be fully integrated in the US mining industry. Larry Grayson of the National Mining Association’s Mine Safety Technology and Training Commission called for “a new paradigm for ensuring safety in underground coal mines, one that focuses on systematic and comprehensive risk management as the foundation from which all life-safety efforts emanate (7).” A risk management approach has already been implemented with success in Australia’s minerals industry as part of a transition during the mid-1990s from a prescriptive based health and safety attitude to a more proactive, duty-of care [risk-based] philosophy (13, 16, 17).FUNDAMENTAL ELEMENTS OF RISK MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES The fundamental components of a comprehensive risk assessment/management program are well-established within the realm of mining health and safety. Figure 1 depicts the elements of a typical mining hazard management framework. The first step in any safety-based risk management system is to identify and assess hazards by their location, nature, and magnitude within a mine. Next, a decision is made about choosing to eliminate, mitigate, or tolerate each hazard. Ideally, a hazard will be eliminated during the design stages of mining, though dynamic mining conditions often require continuous improvement and reevaluation of existing hazard controls. If elimination is not possible, hazard mitigation actions can consist of methods, rules, equipment, competencies, or other mechanisms. If a hazard is simply tolerated, as many inherent mining hazards must be, then specialized administrative controls must be utilized to minimize losses. During this process, the performance of each action is monitored and modified as needed (13)."

This report describes the carbonizing properties of the principal coal beds of Allegheny County, Pa., which rank low in the high-volatile A bituminous classification. Seven coal samples from 3 coal beds were selected for study, as follows: 2 each from the Redstone and Pittsburgh beds and 3 from the Upper Freeport bed. Selection was based on estimated reserves. The samples of Upper Freeport and Pittsburgh coals were satisfactory chemically for producing metallurgical coke. The ash contents of the samples of Redstone coal were moderately high. One of the samples of Redstone coal was high in sulfur content, and it would be difficult to upgrade to meet present metallurgical standards.
