Figure 1-1 shows the basic transmitter design concepts used for the pulse system, the half-wave CW system, and the full-wave CW system. The antenna current waveform is also shown for each transmitter for typical operating frequencies and antennas. The switches shown in Figure 1-i were actually implemented using solid state devices. In all three systems the signaling format may be interrupted to conserve power and thereby extend battery life. Frequency accuracy and stability is achieved using a tuning fork oscillator in the transmitters and tuning fork filters in the receivers for all three systems. This provides the narrow reception bandwidths needed to enhance signal detectability. All three systems also use frequency assignment for identification purposes. The location schemes employed are likewise identical, each being based on detecting the null (signal minimum) of the horizontal magnetic field on the surface. Since these systems are basically similar, the primary purpose is to select the system which gives the maximum signal detectability on the surface from a manpack transmitter operating in the mine. Both the pulse and half-wave C W systems use a d. c. pulse to energize the loop antenna. However, with the pulse system, this pulse duration is short compared to the pulse repetition rate (prf), whereas with the half-wave C W system the pulse duration equals one-half the period of the switching frequency. In the pulse system, energy from the battery is stored in a capacitor so that during the switching interval the internal resistance of the power source can be considered almost negligible. Both transmitters must drive a loop antenna which is a reactive load having inductance, L, and resistance, Ra.

The dissolution of iron oxides in mixtures of acids is fairly uncommon but can result in a more efficient dissolution process. The objective in this work was to investigate the dissolution of synthetic hematite powder in mixtures of oxalic and sulfuric acid. Experiments were done at different acid ratios and temperatures. An increase in temperature from 15 to 35 °C increased solubility, whereas an increase from 35 to 50 °C did not change the solubility but had a profound effect on the kinetics. An important finding was that oxalic acid advanced the dissolution process since increasing the amount of oxalic acid in the system resulted in faster kinetics and higher solubilities. The dissolution kinetics were well described with the Kabai model, which was the only studied model able to describe the whole reaction time. However, the solid specific constant a varied for the different acid ratios and this is argued to be a result of changes in the solid phase. The changes in the constant a were not in line with the original study of Kabai, which indicates that a cannot be the solid specific constant but it can be the constant connected to dissolving media describing the changes in the dissolution mechanism.

High-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) are an accepted, but continuously expanding, comminution technology. The copper industry has a growing need to process harder ores with progressively lower grades, more challenging metallurgy and increasing demand for efficient bacterial leaching applications. This has resulted in a major focus on HPGR use in a crushing circuit. If the industry is to increase leach extraction while lowering energy costs in high-throughput hydrometallurgical operations, HPGR will be of inherent significance. The following paper summarizes test work on copper leach ores utilizing the benefits of HPGR comminution, while increasing several critical metallurgical parameters. Based on the current work and previous investigations, it was found that HPGR comminution within a crushing circuit, in specific instances, can result in 2 - >10% increases in cop-per extraction. The tested variables are crush size, rock type and copper mineralogy dependence. Various other process parameters may also be optimized.

Deep excavation is commonly associated with construction of different deep below-grade structural elements (e.g., basement walls and slabs, tunnels, retaining walls, tanks, utilities, etc.) Deep Excavation Retaining Systems (DERS) are required when open cuts with safe slopes are not possible. Careful analysis, design, and planning of the DERS are required to provide safe below-grade construction and secure nearby structures from damaging effects that may result from the deep excavation. Selection and design of temporary or permanent DERS (e.g., soldier pile and lagging, sheet piling walls, secant pile walls, tie backs, etc.) can have significant impact on time, cost, and performance. In order to design DERS using conventional methods, it is necessary to obtain shear strength parameters, angle of internal friction (ø), and cohesion (c), of retained soils. Residual shear strength parameters (ø'res, c'res) obtained from drained direct shear tests and triaxial tests on saturated samples have been commonly used in practice for the analysis and design of DERS. However, there are cases where ground water table remains at or below the base of excavation during the design lifetime of DERS. In such cases, the soil above the ground water table is in an unsaturated state. Therefore, it is important to account for the unsaturated conditions of soils in order to optimize the design of DERS. This paper is focused on implementing the basic concepts of unsaturated soils mechanics including matric suction and soils-water characteristic curve (SWCC) to estimate design shear strength parameters of unsaturated soils (i.e., ø°, c', and ø') for the design of a cantilever sheet pile walls, a typical case of study of the DERS. The results of this study indicate that the determination of unsaturated soil strength shear strength parameters is simple. In addition, using unsaturated soil mechanics theories has an outstanding impact on the design of retaining systems.

This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2013 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analyses of exploration activities performed by the mineral industry. Three sources of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for the year 2013: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by SNL Metals & Mining (SNL) of Halifax, NS, Canada (formerly Metals Economics Group (MEG); 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2013 as compiled by the USGS; and 3) regional events that affected exploration activities, including economic, social and political conditions, that were derived from published sources and unpublished discussions with USGS and industry specialists. Commodity and regional compilations are presented in this summary. Because multiple sources are used to develop commodity and regional compilations, reported statistics may vary depending on the source and type of data that are being reported. The SNL data summarize planned company budgets for worldwide exploration activities in 2013 for 20 nonfuel mineral commodities based on surveys returned by companies primarily focused on precious metals (gold, platinum-group metals and silver), base metals (cobalt, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, tin and zinc), bulk commodities (coal, iron ore, phosphate and potash), and specialty commodities (diamond, lithium, niobium, rare-earth elements, tantalum and uranium). Information on uranium exploration activities was included in the MEG overview for the first time in 2007. MEG included data on the commodities lithium, niobium, phosphate, potash, rare-earth elements and tantalum for the first time in 2010 because of the increased topical significance of these commodities. Since 1999, companies with exploration budgets of $100,000 and greater were included in the MEG and SNL compilations. SNL budget estimates exclude aluminum, coal, and oil and gas. Budget estimates for iron ore have been compiled since 2011 but reported separately. The post-1999 budget surveys by MEG and SNL cover at least 90 percent of world?s reported nonferrous, nonfuel mineral exploration budgets; the 2013 survey is reported by SNL to cover an estimated 95 percent of these budgets. The 5 percent that is not covered is accounted for by companies that chose not to participate in the SNL survey, private companies that do not publish their budget data, and government-funded exploration activities.

The electrochemical reduction of aluminum chloride to aluminum was investigated in a closed, two-compartment cell utilizing a molten chloride electrolyte. The externally heated cell was divided into a reduction compartment and a combination AICl3 feed and metal removal compartment. Aluminum was deposited at 700° C on a molten aluminum catbode from a KCI-NaCI-AICI3 electrolyte. The AICl3 content of the electrolyte was replenished by either vapor or solid additions. The chlorine evolved was collected and measured to give a quantitative evaluation of AICl3 reduction. The effects of anode and cathode current densities and AIC13 concentration on anode current efficiencies were studiedo A range of 64 to 84 percent anode current efficiency was obtained with the 25-pound electrolyte capacity cell and related auxiliary equipment.

The Bureau of Mines has started an engineering study of oil recovery by miscible-phase displacement. As a preliminary part of the investigation a literature and patent study was made to prevent duplication of work already done, to become acquainted with those actively engaged in research of this type, and to learn where the recovery method has been attempted. This bibliography gives results of this study. The bibliography includes 254 references to U.S. and foreign patents and published literature relating to miscible-phase displacement processes of oil recovery. It is divided into the following sections: (1) U.S. patents, (2) foreign patents, (3) literature references, (4) author index, and (5) publication and source reference. The patents and literature references are listed alphabetically by author by intervals of years. References to February 1963 are included.

"The triboelectric charge attributes of feldspar, quartz and wollastonite minerals, after contacting different triboecharging medium made of different materials, were considered. Their charge acquisitions by different size fractions of minerals were monitored and accordingly their energetic work function values were estimated. Moreover the separation behaviours of these minerals through the electric field of a laboratory free falling separator were determined and the effects of some chemical reagents on separation their separation characteristics were studied.Finally an attempt was made to translate the findings from single mineral systems to a complex silicate ore, containing quartz, feldspars, wollastonite and some other silicates. The results show favourable prospect to apply the triboelectric separation technique for beneficiation such a complex raw material."

Quenched alloys, prepared by powder metallurgical techniques, were examined by microscopic and X-ray diffraction methods. The compositions and heat treatments were chosen so that the chromium and nickel solvuses could be determined and a range of composition and temperature, in which a eutectoid had been reported, could be explored in small intervals. The results showed no evidence of eutectoid reactions having taken place. ALLOYS containing iron, chromium, molybdenum, and nickel are extensively used in high-temperature applications. In order to provide basic information on the solid-state reactions that occur in such alloys, the National Bureau of Standards is engaged in an extensive study of the equilibrium phases in the binary, ternary, and quaternary systems involving these four metals. Attention was directed to the chromium-nickel system because a review of the literature showed conflicting data. A recent compendium1 of the constitution of binary alloys gives two diagrams for the chromium-nickel system, one a simple eutectic and the second a diagram showing a eutectoid and a eutectic. The eutectoid was the result of an allotropic transformation in a high-temperature solid-solution form of a chromium-rich phase called 0. The approximate temperature and composition of the eutectoid was 1200°C and 30 at. pct Ni. In the preliminary study, at the Bureau, no transformation was indicated in the chromium-rich phase of ternary and quaternary alloys in which chromium and nickel were major components. Similar results have been reported from time to time in the literature,2-8 In consequence of this situation, a systematic study was made of the constitution of heat-treated chromium-nickel alloys using metallographic and X-ray diffraction methods. The compositions of the alloys were selected so as to determine the boundaries of the chromium-rich and the nickel-rich phases and to explore in small intervals the ranges in composition and temperature in which the eutectoid had been reported. The results of this study are reported and discussed in the present paper. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Materials, Alloys, and Heat Treatments—The alloys were prepared by a powder metallurgy technique similar to that used in earlier work.9 Analyses of the materials used are given in Table I. Powders were mixed using a vibrator in 30-g batches of predetermined composition; 2-g pellets were made from the mixture by compacting at room temperature in a 1/2-in. diam mold under 60,000 lb per sq in. pressure. The pellets were sintered in dry hydrogen for 10 days at 1300°C. At the end of the sintering treatment the specimens were quenched in water, which caused a pale green film to form on the chromium-rich alloys and thin black scale to form on the nickel-rich alloys. The pellets after sintering were approximately 1/2 in. diam by 3/32 in. thick. The purification train9 was modified by inserting a tube of titanium turnings, heated at 700°C to increase the efficiency of the removal of oxgen and nitrogen. It was found in the earlier work that the sintering treatment lowered the carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen contents of chromium-rich alloys to 0.01, 0.01, and 0.004 wt pct, respectively, and that there was a loss of chromium. In order to ascertain the extent of this loss, the chromium contents of certain alloys were determined chemically. They included those alloys used to determine the parameter-composition curves and those of critical composition, used to determine the chromium-solvus microscopically; these analyses were made on samples after the final heat treatments. The development of commercial natural-gas reserves in the Michigan stray sandstone horizon of central Michigan during the past few years has resulted in expansion of the natural-gas industry in that State. The location of the natural- gas reserves of Michigan in the general vicinity of domestic and industrial markets is of economic importance, and in supplying these markets with natural gas a reasonable knowledge of the extent and availability of the reserves is needed in formulating regulations for drilling gas wells and producing natural gas, in analyzing the feasibility of projects to construct natural-gas transmission lines, in promoting and developing markets for the domestic and industrial consumption of natural gas, and In solving many engineering and economic problems common to the natural-gas industry. The development of the natural-gas industry in Michigan has been related closely to the development of oil production. The potential oil production of Michigan is comparable with that in most of the eastern oil-producing States. The development of oil production probably will continue, especially in the central Michigan Basin area; and as wells are drilled to deep horizons in the search for oil, more knowledge will be obtained of the gas reserves in formations above the oil- bearing horizons.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the electrochemical reduction of lead chloride as a method for producing lead without the pollution problems associated with smelting. It was determined that high-purity metal (>99.9 pct Pb) could be obtained, using PbC12 prepared by ferric chloride leaching of galena concentrate: PbS + 2FeCl3?PbCl2 + 2FeC12 + S°. Optimum results in small-scale electrolytic tests were achieved with a bath consisting of 40 to 70 wt-pct PbCl2 dissolved in KC1-LiCl eutectic, an operating temperature of 450° C, a current density of 2.5 amp/in2, and an electrode spacing of 0.5 inch. In large-scale tests made to develop a cell design for commercial application, the optimum electrode arrangement proved to be a bipolar configuration with horizontal plates. This gave a current efficiency of 86 pct with an energy requirement of 0.52 kwhr/lb lead. To determine the effect of impurity buildup in the bath, 1,200 lb of PbC12 prepared by ferric chloride leaching of galena concentrate was electrolyzed over a period of 2 months. Little deterioration of the metal quality occurred in that time; all of the lead produced had a purity equal to or better than corroding grade (>99.94 pct Pb).

The mineral bastnasite is utilized to describe alternate processes for the extraction and separation of the rare-earth elements by solvent extraction. The rare earths can be acid-leached directly or fused with NaOH before acid leaching. Cerium, the major constituent, can be recovered by fractional precipitation, fractional leaching, or solvent extraction with tri-nbutyl phosphate. The latter process is capable of producing 99.5-percent pure CeO2 at 98+ percent recovery. Lanthanum is subsequently recovered by fractional precipitation or solvent extraction with a nitrogen-based extractant. A 20-stage mixer-settler operation with a primary amine extractant results in a 95-percent pure La203 fraction at 96 percent recovery. Europium is amenable to extraction from most of the remaining rare earths with an organophosphate extractant. Selective stripping of the europium, followed by reductive precipitation, produces high-purity Eu203. Another possibility for europium purification involves the differential extraction of europium with an amine followed by a sub- sequent reducing strip. Separation of the remaining elements is more difficult but can be accomplished with amine or quaternary ammonium extracts. Typical separation factors achieved are 3. 8 for praseodymium-neodymium and 10. 5 for neodymium-samarium.

A utilização do wBN como ferramenta de usinagem pode eliminar a necessidade de retífica das peças. Portanto, neste trabalho, os experimentos realizados tiveram por objetivo o estudo e caracterização de compósitos à base de wBN, diboreto de titânio (TiB2) e alumínio (Al) para obtenção de pastilhas para usinagem. A composição utilizada para a investigação utilizou 70% de wBN. Os compósitos foram obtidos sob altas pressões e altas temperaturas via aplicação cíclica . As patilhas atingiram aproximadamente 4,5 mm de diâmetro, e altura de 4,0 mm. As amostras foram caracterizadas por ensaio de dureza Vickers, microscopia eletrônica de varredura, microscopia confocal e densidade. De forma geral, os melhores resultados foram para amostras com ciclos de um minuto cada, para os três ciclos, sendo pouco dependente do valor da pressão aplicada. Foi observada dureza maior que 17GPa, baixa porosidade e um valor de densidade aparente muito próxima à teórica.

"When performing a valuation of a mineral property, a developing mine or perhaps an ongoing operation, the appraiser is typically provided with a range of information prepared by the property owner. This information can include ownership records, geological interpretation, assay data, an estimate of the reserves or resources believed to be on site (tons and grade), mine plans, production forecasts, capital and operating cost projections, and so forth.The appraiser familiarizes himself with the data, analyzes the various reports and then prepares the appraisal. There is usually a site visit, and there may be some effort at comparison of the particular mineral deposit with others in the region or with those of similar depositional characteristics, but for the most part, the appraiser is relying on the corporate documents, tempered by his/her experience in the field. Time is usually of the essence, the cost for the assignment has been trimmed, and therefore independent verification of the various components comprising the underlying data base (legal review, redrilling portions of the deposit, collection of new samples, re-assaying, etc.) is unlikely in most situations.In the case of high-value commodities — gold, silver, diamonds, perhaps the platinum-group elements — there have been numerous examples of the property owners attempting to increase the value of their holdings by nefarious methods. Most of these involve salting the deposit in some fashion; i.e., introducing small amounts of the commodity into samples being sent to a laboratory for analysis so that the resultant assay shows a higher grade (Donaldson, 2002; Greeley, 2001; Lechler et al., 2008 and Meech, 2001). Other schemes to enhance the apparent worth of a property include the use of nonstandard assay procedures, incorrect handling or withholding of the underlying information, and false reporting."

The need to better understand and develop strategies to improve instantaneous shovel productivity at the Cadia Hill Open Pit Mine (CHM) instigated the development of the æShot to ShovelÆ project. This project has involved the implementation of a drill and blast (D&B) information management system to capture current and future experience. Equally important has been the manual monitoring of shovel productivity and direct use and analysis of high precision GPS and productivity data logged by ModularÆs Dispatch System. The analysis of this type of data was facilitated with the application of GIS based software (ie MapInfo). This has shown to be a powerful medium to display, interpret and assess this type of spatial information on a blast-by-blast basis. Cadia HillÆs well-defined D&B processes supplemented with the application of the above systems are providing a unique capability to assess and better understand the impact of both muckpile conditions and operator proficiency on instantaneous loading productivity. This is facilitating the definition of appropriate optimisation strategies in both drilling and blasting and operator proficiency training. This paper gives a summary of the work conducted in the æShot to ShovelÆ project, describes the engineering tools being implemented and discusses preliminary findings and their practical implications.

Methods are proposed for predicting concentrations of nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide in the combustion gases of flames, specifically of lean, stoichiometric, and rich propane-air flames. Calculations are based on kinetic and thermodynamic theory. These theoretical data are compared with concentrations observed experimentally downstream of flat grid-type burner flames (approximately 25,000 Btu/hr) that were used to simulate gas appliances such as water and space heaters. Air pollutant concentrations are also computed for (1) flames chemically perturbed by recycling flue gases into the primary fuel-air mixtures; (2) flames thermally perturbed by cooling the burned gases at different rates; and (3) flames perturbed by combination of these two effects. In general, experimental and computed concentrations agree to within a factor of 2 to 7 with the experimental values always being higher than the theoretical. The theoretical analysis indicates that cooling the primary flame by recycling cold flue gases (with and without excess air) reduces the relative emission of nitric oxide and increases emission of carbon monoxide if the flame stoichiometry does not radically change. Cooling rates of about 5,500° to 10,000° R/sec starting at about 3,500° R generally suffice to prevent nitric oxide concentrations in lean flames from increasing much above the initial values at the combustion zone; these same cooling rates do not prevent oxidation of most of the initial carbon monoxide.

The gradual reduction of the sinter feed size has been a complicating factor in the maintenance of sintering productivity. In addition, pellet feeds have been used for chemical correction. Because of this, it is necessary an effective cold agglomeration step in sintering to keep the ironmaking competitiveness. Thus, in the present paper, four different technological routes for cold agglomeration with sinter feeds (drum mixer, intensive mixer + drum, double drum and HPS - Hybrid Pelletized Sinter) were evaluated in pilot scale and their impacts on the indicators of the sintering and the sinter quality was obtained. It was found that the best results on granulation index and, consequently, productivity were obtained in the route using HPS. However, the sinter from this process was the most fragile among the analyzed ones. The performance of the double drum process was superior to the intensive mixer from the point of view of productivity and sinter quality.

My acquaintance with rock, dusting as a preventive of wide spread explosions in coal mines dates from the fall of 1914 and the spring, summer and fall of 19.1.5 when I had an opportunity to observe the staging (both before and after) of several of the explosions in the Experimental Mine at Pittsburgh and saw violent explosions stopped by rock dust, also saw violently explosive coal dust made insensitive by use of rock dust to ignition or to propagation or spreading of an explosion. From this work I became a convert to rock dusting though I had previously been a firm believer in watering methods and am yet a firm believer that watering, methods have a well defined place in promoting the health and safety of our coal miners. In 1916, while in the Bureau of Mines service, I made an underground study and a report to the Bureau on the first extensively rock dusted mine, in the United States, the Delagua Mine of the Victor American Fuel Company near Trinidad, Colorado, there being then some ten miles of entry in that mine which had been kept well rock-dusted for at' least four years The dust used was " adobe" or surface soil screened from sweepings of the dry surface wagon roads through a screen with one-eighth inch openings, the dust giving about 20% through 200 mesh and about, 10% of approximately 1/8-inch size. The material was collected during dry weather by contract at $1.00 per ton (sacked) and was accumulated in summer and stored for winter and spring use. The dust was scattered through haulage entries by hand or by an electrically operated blower and was held on shelves along the ribs or between and on timber caps with from 1/4-inch to 2-inch thickness of the rock dust. The cost of maintaining the 10 miles of entry well dusted was about $1,500.00 per year or $150.00 per mile per year. Total cost of 'the rock dusting over a four-year period was about $6,000.00, about 2,500 tons of dust being used and 2,000,000 tons of coal produced; the above cost included about 1,200 days labor dusting at $2.50 per day, 2,500 tons of rock dust at $1.00. per ton and miscellaneous labor, material, repairs, power cost, etc., amounting to about $500.00. The cost per ton of coal produced for keeping 10 miles of entry rock dusted being about 3/10c. In addition to the rock dusting, some sprinkling was done, chiefly in the interior of the mine, costing about 2/5c per ton; and due to spilling of coal and sifting of coal .dust through loose cars on the entry floors, the floors of haulage roads were kept sprinkled between and just outside-the rails. Total cost of sprinkling and rock dusting was about .7/10c per ton much less of course than the same work would now cost. Between January, 1916, and July, 1924, my duties in the Bureau of Mines allowed me, to follow up and make underground inspections and reports on more than 20 coal mine explosions and fires in a number of states of the union and in this work a large number of samples of road, rib, and other dusts were taken to ascertain the effect of moisture, roof and floor dirt, etc., upon the propagation or the stopping of the explosion; also a large part of my work was to obtain evidence pro and con as to influences affecting the disasters and very prominent among those influences were the occurrence or use of water, water drippers, or ponds, as well as of sand, roof or floor rock or dust on floor, ribs, etc. The Dolomite explosion near Birmingham, Alabama, in November, 1922, and the Dawson No. 1 Mine Explosion at Dawson, New Mexico, in February, 1923 (at both of which I made underground inspection and report) both starting on main intake haulage road and both in mines which had fairly elaborate watering systems, convinced me that at least as far as freezing can occur on main intake air courses which also act 2s main .haulage ways, rock dusting is likely to be much more dependable than sprinkling. The Bureau of Mines estimated that 1,578 million tons of recoverable coal remained in the county in beds 28 inches or more thick as of January 1, 1955.
