The eighth pelletizing plant, located at the Tubarão complex Industrial Unit of Vale S/A in Vitória-Espirito Santo-ES, processes a pellet feed primarily composed of compact and friable itabirite from Itabira and Brucutu concentration plants, located in the iron quadrangle in Minas Gerais-MG. The use of hydrated ores in the composition of the fine piles, such as Brucutu's common fines amphibolite itabirite (FABR), and Fábrica Nova pellet feed (PEFN), contributed to increase the energy efficiency of comminution, increasing the production of tumbling ball mills, minimizing the impacts during a mill preventive maintenance.

The United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the National Send and Gravel Association conducted a safety contest in 1929 Among producers of sand and gravel. Only 26 plants were enrolled, as the contest was late getting under way. It is hoped that a ranch larger number of plants will be represented in the safety competition of 1930. Two trophies, both of which were provided by Rock Products magazine, were awarded at the end of the contest; one trophy was given for the best safety record among plants working 100,000 or mare man-hours during the year and the other for the beat record among plants working less than 100,000 man-hours. The trophies were presented to representatives of the winning, companies on January 29, 1930, at the annual convention of the National Sand and Gravel Association at Memphis, Tenn.

In response to the ever- increasing demand for high temperature materials, the Bureau of Mines instituted a program for the study and development of superrefractories, One of the major tools obtained for use in this research was an image furnace of the double-paraboloidal mirror type. Although extensive theoretical analyses of solar furnace performance may be found in the literature, comparable detailed information on the double-paraboloidal-mirror image furnace has been nonexistent. This report presents an analysis based on an investigation undertaken to ascertain the limitations and characteristics of the furnace so that it can be used most effectively. The quantitative determination of the energy available at the image, the control of this energy by mans of a 60-inch iris diaphragm, and its variation with position and time relative to the heat source used have all been dealt with in detail. The quantitative results were obtained using a specially designed waterflow calorimeter and these measurements, in conjunction with the theoretical analysis, are used to present a fairly complete description of the furnace and its capabilities.

Os aços revestidos com zinco e suas ligas são muito utilizados em automóveis, em razão de sua excelente resistência à corrosão. Dependendo da severidade da conformação durante o processo de estampagem, pode ocorrer dano à camada de revestimento. Para contornar esse problema, vários métodos de tratamento da superfície do revestimento para lubrificação têm sido desenvolvidos, como, por exemplo, o Tratamento L, que é um filme a base de P-Mn patenteado pela Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation e disponibilizado no Brasil pela Unigal Usiminas. Como, após a estampagem, o aço é submetido a vários processos até a obtenção do produto final, além de apresentar uma boa lubricidade é essencial que o Tratamento L não interfira nessas etapas seqüentes. Nesse trabalho, foi avaliada a sua influência nos pré-tratamentos, na pintura e resistência à corrosão de um aço galvanizado a quente, com as ligas Zn-Fe (GA), cujas amostras foram pintadas em uma montadora após os pré-tratamentos de fosfatização e a base de óxido de zircônio e, em seguida, avaliadas por meio de testes acelerados cíclicos e não acelerados de corrosão. Foi verificado que o Tratamento L não interfere nas etapas de pré-tratamentos, pintura e nem na resistência à corrosão do aço, o que o habilita como um possível tratamento a ser utilizado com o intuito de melhorar a estampabilidade do aço.

Protective canopies for conventional electric face equipment, including shuttle cars, operating in low coal (less than 48 inches) were designed, fabricated, installed and evaluated on in-mine machines engaged in regular coal mining operations. This work was performed under contract to the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center. The canopies will support a vertical load of 18,000 pounds and provide protection against both roof falls and contact with the mine rib. Canopy configurations were established based on human engineering studies, full scale canopy mockups, and in-mine observation and consultation with mine and equipment manufacturing personnel. Overall height of each canopy is hydraulically adjustable between a minimum of 32 inches and a maximum of 40 inches. Canopy tops are open framework, welded structures, covered with expanded metal mesh. Structural members are 1 3/4-inch or 2-inch square tubing of AISI 413ON and ASTM A500 material, respectively. The canopy tops are typically supported by an understructure and upright post arrangement that is either integrated into the current operator platform or attached to the machine frame. The four upright corner posts house the hydraulic actuators. Canopy tops are elevated horizontally. Canopies are welded or bolted to the existing machines. Installation is accomplished with a minimal amount of interface modifications. No major machine design changes are required. Canopies were trial installed and load tested at the manufacturer's facility prior to installation on the in-mine machines. Canopies were installed on a Joy 14BU10 Loader, 16RB-3AH Cutter, and two 21SC Shuttle Cars, and a Galis 300 Roof Drill and 460-S Face Drill. Canopy installations were evaluated in the Jewell Ridge Coal Company No. 12 and Big Creek Tiller Mines. Operational time accumulated on the installations during evaluation ranged from 1 week to 14 weeks of two-shift operation. All five canopy designs, manufacture, and test were successfully accomplished. The five canopies met all safety requirements. Three of the five canopies were deemed to be completely successful from an operator's point of view. That is, mine management as well as the machine operator found that the canopies did not impede the operation of the machines to function with the same efficiency as before the installation of the canopies. The loader canopy, in fact, appeared to have provided a mole efficient operation of the loader by providing added safety to the operator from rib contact thus allowing him to concentrate more fully on the loading function. Operational problems were encountered with the shuttle car and the roof drill. The shuttle car canopy obstructed visibility to an objectionable amount and the roof drill canopy impeded maneuverability of the machine, more than doubling the roof bolting time.

A prototype portable hyperspectral imager that operates in the visible and near-infrared ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum was field tested at an open-pit mine. The tests were sponsored by the Spokane Research Laboratory, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, as part of an investigation of remote sensing technologies for use in detecting and monitoring conditions in surface mines that could lead to catastrophic slope failure. The spectro-polarimetric imager, built at the Carnegie Mellon Research Institute, employs an acousto-optical tunable filter (AOTF) to control wavelength, a phase retarder to measure polarization signatures, and a digital camera and computer to capture data. The spectral range of the instrument is 450 to 1000 nm at 10-nm intervals. High-resolution hyperspectral images of highwalls, outcrops, hand samples, and drill core were collected in the field. Spectra from the images closely matched those of specific minerals present and were used to classify the images. The field tests were designed to examine the feasibility of using spectral imaging to assist in compiling objective geologic maps of mine highwalls and other hazardous slopes. Results illustrate the capability of the method to discriminate materials within the image, validating the concept of simplified spectral imaging. A contributing factor in many slope failures is the presence and distribution of mechanically incompetent, clay-rich altered rock in slope faces. Spectral features of clays and other minerals are more distinctive in the short-wave and mid-infrared part of the spectrum; the capabilities of the instrument need to be extended into this range to apply the AOTF-based technology to common geologic materials. A field-portable hyperspectral imager could find broad application in remotely identifying diverse materials from solids and coatings to gases.

Conventional spirals are capable of providing excellent clean coal recovery, although at a relatively high ash content. Compound spirals, which provide two stages of spiral cleaning in a single taller unit, have been commercialized in recent years to improve upon the cleaning performance obtained from conventional spirals. The present study aimed at optimizing the performance obtained from a compound spiral for cleaning especially high sulfur fine and ultrafine coal. Industrial-scale spiral units were utilized for this study in a pilot-scale facility at the Illinois Coal Development Park. A statistically designed experimental program was conducted to optimize ash and sulfur cleaning performance of the compound spiral. It was found that significant cleaning of ultrafine coal (i.e., 150 microns × 45 microns and even 45 microns × 25 microns size coal) is achievable with the compound spiral. However, operating conditions for cleaning finer coal fractions (-150 microns size coal) have to be significantly different from those used to clean coarser coal fractions (+150 microns size coal). The sulfur rejection trends were different from ash separation efficiency trends in all size fractions except 45 microns × 25 microns. The probable error (Ep) and effective specific gravity of separation (SG50c) determined for the compound spiral cleaning of the overall particle size were as low as 0.07 and 1.62, respectively. However, the bypass of a small percentage of clean coal to the tailings stream of the compound spiral, may need further adjustment of the key process parameters.

"The study evaluated the impact on overall circuit metallurgy of improving the performance of the two flotation columns that make up the final Mo cleaning stage in the Cu/Mo separation circuit at Highland Valley Copper mine. The results showed that a key factor to improve the overall circuit metallurgy was to control the size of the bubbles generated in the columns. When a large proportion of small (< 1 mm) bubbles were generated, the production rate of solids-in-concentrate increased by a factor of 4-5 compared to typical production figures without compromising concentrate quality. This increase in concentrate production rate reduced the circulating load in the circuit causing a significant increase of Mo recovery. A statistical analysis of historical production data showed a strong relationship between final concentrate production rate and overall Mo recovery. This relationship along with the results from this study indicated an opportunity to increase the recovery of Mo from 90% (typical) to 94% without downgrading concentrate grade. This 4% increase represents about 14,000 lbs or $500,000 worth of Mo each month at current metal prices.To provide a rational interpretation of the results, this study also examined whether the model of Gorain et al. (1997; 1998; 1999) could explain the increase of Mo recovery seemingly resulting from the decrease of bubble size. The data showed that the model predictions did not agree with the experimental data, i.e., for a given change (decrease) of bubble size, the predictions underestimated significantly the observed recovery increase. An interpretation based on the fundamental analysis of Finch and Dobby (1990) and Hernandez-Aguilar et al. (2005) is proposed to explain the discrepancy between measurements and predictions obtained from Gorain et al.’s model.INTRODUCTIONIt is generally accepted that the size of the bubbles generated in a flotation cell – a concept usually referred to as “bubble size” – has a significant effect on metallurgical performance. However, a significant number of mineral processing practitioners often question, with valid reasons, the practical benefits of implementing process improvement strategies based on controlling bubble size. “Small” bubbles are often considered to be “favourable”, but how small they need to be for a particular case, or how to adjust operating conditions to control a target bubble size, or whether the bubbles need to be smaller in the first place are questions that usually remain unanswered. As base metal sulphide resources become increasingly challenging to process, producers seek alternative options to treat concentrates. This study considers the mineral, elemental, and leaching character of a West Australian nickel sulphide deposit (Cosmos Nickel Project). After a brief review of the published work bench top leach tests were conducted to examine the factors which impact the kinetics of nickel sulphide leaching such as particle size, temperature, acid strength and type, concentration of copper sulphate and sodium chloride, and oxygen partial pressure. The effect of sodium chloride was considered due to the common occurrence of hyper saline water at West Australian nickel sulphide mine sites. Ultrafine grinding to an 80% passing size of 10 µm resulted in high nickel leaching efficiency. Moreover, higher concentrations of acid, copper(II) and sodium chloride also gave higher nickel and cobalt leaching efficiencies but arsenic precipitated as FeAsO4. Under the most suitable conditions the extractions of nickel, cobalt and arsenic at 90oC after 6 hours were >95%, 90% and <5%, respectively. The comparison with results from high pressure operations indicates the possibility of using a hydrometallurgical flowsheet based on fine grinding and atmospheric pressure leaching and warrants further investigations.

The Martabe gold mine is Indonesia’s largest precious metals-only producer and is also one of few significant hard rock mine developments in the past 15 years. Martabe is located on the west coast of the island of Sumatra in the North Sumatra province. The mine commenced operation in mid-2012, producing over 280 koz of gold and 1.5 Moz of silver in its first full year of production.Martabe consists of a cluster of six currently identified high-sulfidation epithermal deposits. The deposits lie in a north–south corridor with an approximately 8 km strike length and 1.5 km width. The total Measured, Indicated and Inferred Mineral Resource Estimate of the deposits is currently 8.2 Moz of gold and over 75 Moz of silver.The exploration program at Martabe has added more than 2 Moz of gold and 15 Moz of silver to the Mineral Resource estimates (Measured, Indicated and Inferred categories) since G-Resources acquired the project in 2009. This has been achieved at an average cost of US$17 in exploration expenditure per ounce of resource added, which includes helicopter-supported drilling programs in rugged forest terrain.The factors that led to this exploration success at Martabe include: in the first instance and most importantly, recognition of the geological potential of the mineralised system continually updating and improving ‘orebody knowledge’ and applying new ideas to the exploration program ongoing engagement and consultation by world professionals with geological expertise in similar systems ongoing executive management support for the program the high quality of work completed by previous owners a strong focus on quality control, staff development and operational safety, with the JORC Code (in particular Table 1 of the Code) as the underlying basis for quality control continual and positive engagement with government, community and other external stakeholders.This paper will discuss in detail the first of these two factors. Caval Ridge Mine (CVM) is one of the newly established open-cut coal mines of BHP in Queensland, where no tailings dam is planned to be built in order to minimise environmental impacts from mining activities. The waste streams from the Coal Handling and Processing Plant, including fine tailings dewatered by belt filter presses, coarse rejects, and mixed plant rejects, are co-disposed within waste dumps built with pre-strip and dragline spoils. Due to high rejects output (35 – 60% of feed) and low spoil to reject ratio (&lt; 5) the large quantities of rejects bring significant geotechnical and operational challenges to CVM, which are exacerbated by increasing annual production rates and additional rejects from washing coal from an adjacent mine. Further in-house geotechnical review commenced in mid-2014 based on the initial geotechnical studies during the project stage of CVM between 2011 and 2013. The outcomes have enabled rejects disposal at CVM by constructing large belt filtered tailings cells, coarse rejects only dumps, and co-disposal of the mixed plant rejects at dump tip-heads. This paper presents the rejects disposal strategies at CVM from both technical and operational aspects. It also discusses future projects for belt filtered tailings moisture reduction including assessment of tailings clay mineralogy, as well as mixed plant reject co-disposal verification and optimisation.CITATION:Li, J, Payne, D and Hooi, H, 2018. "INTRODUCTION With the advent of war in 1941, military operations in Alaska were enlarged on such a scale that the demand for coal in the Territory more than doubled. Coal was needed urgently for heating forts and other military establishments, for use on large construction projects, and for handling the greatly increased volume of traffic on the Alaska Railroad. -The additional tonnage required, estimated at perhaps 250,000 tons per year, probably could have been supplied by the United States, but shipping space between Pacific Coast ports and Alaska was already overburdened with military supplies and construction materials. Moreover, although of only secondary importance in wartime, the cost of coal shipped into the Territory is reported to have been as high as $40 per ton. The alternative to importing coal was, of course, to increase the Production of the Alaska mines.Production of coal in Alaska reached, 350,000 tons in 1944, or more than double the prewar' output. The responsibility for increasing coal production was assumed largely by the Army, A Coal Commission attached to the Alaska Department arranged financial assistance for some mining operations, aided the operators in producing equipment for mechanization, and provided most of the labor necessary to operate the mines. The Bureau of Mines contributed to the program in several ways. First, exploration by the Bureau in the Moose Creek district revealed a substantial tonnage of coal of better grade than any currently mined in the Territory, 4/ and drilling in the Broad Pass district, where a mine to supply coal for the army had been started, revealed that the reserves were far less than had been supposed; this operation was abandoned. Second, coal-preparation practices were studied, and recommendations for improvements made, at two of the operating mines at which the quality of the coal makes preparation a factor of vital importance. Some of the information obtained in these studies forms the basis for the present report."

The Bureau of Mines investigated the use of a chromatographic gas analyzer in determining the concentration of combustion products in gas produced during field and laboratory thermal oil-recovery tests. Several parameters (carrier-gas flow, cell current, sample size, and temperature) known to affect quantitative analyses were studied using a commercially available dual-column, dual-detector chromatographic gas analyzer which had been modified to provide close control of these variables. The apparatus made possible a much closer control of air-and gas-injection rates and provided adequate data for performing material-balance calculations and for determining oxygen utilization during the laboratory and field combustion tests. The chromatographic analysis also aided materially in evaluating and measuring bypassing and gas travel times and in detecting high-permeability zones that were present in the reservoir.

This paper addresses the challenges experienced by the designer and three government agencies during implementation of major improvements for the Turkey Creek Tunnel in Kansas City, Kansas. The tunnel serves as a vital stormwater conveyance system for upstream flood control. Major structural deficiencies were identified within the tunnel including complete loss of sidewall and invert. Without immediate attention, complete loss of the tunnel arch could lead to blockage and extensive remedial repairs under difficult conditions. Considering that tunnel flows must be maintained during construction, a phased design and construction process has been implemented to expedite stabilization of the erosion cavities followed by tunnel liner repairs.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research on cable bolt ground supports to assess their material and support properties, to provide design criteria for using cable bolt supports as roof control systems under various types of underground mining conditions, and to provide a mathematical model of cable bolt support systems. Part 1 describes laboratory studies of the support properties of cable bolts made of conventional steel cables and provides recommendations on such topics as the use of thick grouts, selection of breather tubes, and reduction of water bleeding in cement-based grouts. The studies evaluated both single and double cables; effects of different embedment lengths, water-cement ratios, and grout curing temperatures on support strength; effects of use or nonuse of breather tubes; pumpability and water-bleeding properties of grouts; and the strength properties of sand-cement grouts. Part 2 will cover the strength characteristics of birdcage cable bolt supports, epoxy-coated cables, and cables with steel buttons attached.

Mineral process wastes, such as metallurgical slags nowadays, are of significant metals and materials resources in the circular economy. The usability of iron-making slag is well established; however, steel slag still needs to be utilized due to various physicochemical constraints. In this context, we have reviewed the global steel slag generation, processing, characteristics, and potential application with suggestions for futuristic possibilities to address the technical, economic, and environmental aspects of steel slag recycling. The steel slags inherit characteristics from ore chemistry and their processing routes, which may be Blast Furnace-Basic Oxygen Furnace (BF-BOF) or Direct Reduced Iron-Electric Arc Furnace (DRI-EAF) steel-making routes with/without treatment in a Ladle Furnace (LF). The average generation of slags in BOF, EAF, and LF processes accounts for 110 kg, 70 kg, and 40 kg per tonne of steel, respectively. Considering global steel production of 1878 million tonnes in 2020, the associated slag by-products possess a significant resource of major components like FeO, CaO, SiO2, Al2O3, etc. Selecting a recycling technique depends on the slag's end use, logistics, and physicochemical characteristics. BOF and EAF slag are used ~ 48% in road construction applications and ~ 10% for industrial specific metallurgical use. EAF slag is preferred as cementitious material as compared to BOF. Hot-stage modification of BOF slag has emerged as a preferred method to achieve desired chemical and subsequent mechanical properties for end use. BOF slag has high carbon dioxide sequestration potential for in-plant remediation among steel slags.

Mining of the red iron ores of the Birmingham district, Alabama, has _gone on energetically for the past 50 years and has created a large iron and steel manufacturing center, the only important one in the South. The district produces about 10 per cent of all the iron ore mined in the United States and 80 per cent of the Alabama output is red ore ; moreover 43 of the 419 blast furnaces of the country are in the district tributary to Birmingham and produce 7 per cent of the pig-iron output. The rapid growth of the district has been made possible by investigations that have led to radical changes in furnace practice; studies of methods by which the low-grade, highsilica ores may be treated by concentration 1 will give still greater impetus to development. The· mode of occurrence of the ore has made mining practice comparatively simple, but with the rapid extension of the workings underground and the disturbed condition of the ore bed some distance from the outcrop, conditions tend to become more difficult. Stoping, handling, support, drainage, and ventilation are all affected, sometimes favorably and sometimes adversely, by the extended workings and increased depth of cover. Should beneficiatioil make available the high-silica ores of the lower bench of the Big Seam, mining practice must necessarily be adapted to the new conditions and will be rendered more difficult as the weight of cover increases at long distances from the outcrop. The support of workings will require more attention as the weight of cover increases, and the efficient and economical operation of the mines will depend largely upon improvements in mining and handling the ore.

The objective of this research is to find the extent of the range of applicability of previously developed statistical methods for determining grade and tonnage of ore to bedded uranium deposits. Uranium assays obtained from gamma-ray logs of exploratory drill holes are used to compute grade and tonnage of ore in the deposit by a standard polygonal method and by statistical analysis. The results obtained by the two methods are compared. The uranium-assay frequency distributions are shown to be lognormal and a simple transformation permits the use of standard normal curve statistics. The effects on the assay frequency distributions of stratified sampling, a required minimum mining thickness, and increased assay-interval length are investigated. The addition of low-grade mineralization to make up the required minimum mining thickness results in a distinct change in the skewness of the assay frequency distribution. Any statistical inference regarding grade-tonnage relationships that will be produced, using the minimum mining thickness, should be made on the basis of this "revised" assay frequency distribution.
