Automation of the conventional grinding circuits of Palabora Mining Company (PMC) required that adequate instrumentation and a control system had to be put in place, after which extensive testing had to be done to evaluate different grinding control strategies. The objective was either to optimize the particle size from the grinding circuit, or to increase milling circuit throughput while maintaining particle size at existing levels. Prior to automation of the process as described below the circuits were controlled manually. No on-line information on cyclone feed densities, cyclone feed flow or cyclone overflow particle size was available. This type of control relied heavily on interpretation of the process parameters by the operator and on his ability to make informed decisions on what the set points should be. An integral component of the automation process was the installation of a SCADA package (SysCad SDX) for implementing the on-line control strategy. A self-correcting model for prediction of cyclone particle size was developed and implemented on the SDX. The model is calibrated using values from the particle size analysers while they are operational. If the particle size analysers choke or fail for any reason, the model continues to provide a good estimate of the particle size. This technique ensures that a continuous particle size indication is available compared to the intermittent reading from the instrument. The continuous signal allows particle size to be used as a process variable for control purposes. A strategy was developed and implemented which allows for the production of a controlled grind size from the conventional milling circuit to the flotation circuit. The grinding control strategy allows for the control of particle size from the individual cyclone overflows. This strategy allows the operator of the process to increase or decrease production rate by specifying a coarser or finer grind size required for flotation.

Indonesia is a fast growing democratic developing country comprising more than 17,000 islands, founding member of ASEAN and a member of the G-20 major economies. It is one of the most highly mineralised countries in the world, the mining sector playing a pivotal role in the country's economy. In 2001, the Decentralization Law No. 22/1999 came into force and caused a transfer of authority and responsibility from central to regional and local administrative governments. The new Mining Law of 2009 substituted its 40 year old predecessor, but lacked detailed regulations for its implementation. These were only issued in 2010, which lead to a period of great uncertainty for investors in the mining industry. The new legislation intends to foster domestic economic development, which may be interpreted as protectionist policy. For the development of a sustainable mineral resources policy, further endeavours will have to be made.

An independent technical audit by a consultant is part of the accountability process of publicly owned or publicly quoted companies when raising finance through share issues or loans or the sale of equity, and of banks or development funds when granting loans. Africa is undergoing a renaissance in investment in its mining industry. It is forecast that capital investment, in major mining projects in Africa, will be over US$ 4.4 billion, in the next few years. Most, if not all, of the capital to be raised will require an independent technical audit. The aim of this paper is to assist the management of mining companies seeking finance in appreciating the role of such technical audits. The reasons for such audits, especially to attract international investment, are listed. The role of the audit is explained in assessing the underlying robustness of the company as ?a going concern? and the viability of any ?expansion plans?. Its use is emphasised in establishing the underlying value of the company based on the mine life as supported by the mineral reserves. The independent consultant role is stressed as a representative of the parties in a finance deal who cannot, in practice, carry out their own detailed and specialized technical due diligence. The various components of a typical audit are examined with examples of critical matters which may require resolution. The definitions, which are used commonly in audits, in respect of competence and reserves and resources, as stated by various regulatory bodies, are compared.

The wear resistance of an alloy in heavy mill liner sections may be quite different from that of the same alloy in small balls and other light sections. This fact was established by means of a well standardized laboratory test that was validated for ball mill service. The salient properties of mill liner alloys, including austenitic manganese steels, medium alloy hardenable steels, and abrasion resistance cast irons are described, critically compared, and quantitatively ranked in terms of mill liner service. Where they are tough enough the high-chromium and other martensitic cast irons (e.g. Ni-Hard) promise maximum economy, but their section sensitivity is a limitation. To overcome this an extensive research program studied over a hundred experimental alloys, ranking them for heavy section abrasion resistance by means of the laboratory test. Computer analysis of the results provided a parabolic formula in terms of composition, the apexes of the parabolas providing optimum wear resistance. From the extensive family of parabolas one apex was selected for intensive study in experimental liners, pilot plant production, development of quality controls, and finally full scale production. This is a 19% chromium iron critically alloyed with nickel and molybdenum and hardened by heat treatment. It has excellent resistance to various types of abrasion, but its chief advantage is in heavy mill liner sections, where it has about 25% better abrasion resistance than the best of the quality controlled chilled Ni-Hards. It is also tougher. After production problems were solved, a number of ball and rod mill tests were arranged on a guaranteed performance basis. Two of these, representing about 138,000 pounds of mill liner castings, have recently confirmed in service the superiority that was predicted by the laboratory tests.

A prática de desoxidação dos aços durante o vazamento, na qual se utiliza o alumínio como desoxidante é bastante difundida entre os aciaristas. Entretanto, gera-se como produto da desoxidação a alumina 2 Al + 3 O = Al2O3(s). Na maioria das vezes, a alumina compromete a qualidade interna do produto, assim como a lingotabilidade do aço líquido elaborado. Estas inclusões não metálicas contribuem para a obstrução da válvula submersa durante o lingotamento. Visou-se neste trabalho avaliar o potencial da substituição de parte do alumínio pelo coque na desoxidação parcial dos aços baixo carbono acalmados ao alumínio durante o vazamento do metal dos convertedores para a panela. Após o desenvolvimento da metodologia e do procedimento operacional, utilizou-se o coque como pré desoxidante em 868 corridas, no período de 09/2014 a 02/2015, sem a ocorrência de reações durante a adição de coque no vazamento e sem o comprometimento do acerto da composição química.

ANALYSIS of 117 occurrences of bumps in coal mines shows that 67.6 percent are associated with pillar-line points.4 Slabbing and splitting pillars, development, and other unfavorable milling practices in abutment areas may be a contributory or the primary cause of bumps. The cure for pillar-line bumps is to recognize areas that can be expected to become highly stressed and to project the mining plan and operations to eliminate such areas insofar as possible. If such areas cannot be eliminated, then the mining plan and operations should be projected to avoid the necessity of disturbing these areas before the stresses have been dissipated.

In describing the Canadian mineral industry in a world setting, this paper examines the industry from four points of view. First, mineral industry growth is related to trends in economic activity thereby providing a measure of the industry's importance in the Canadian economy. To give perspective to the Canadian scene, reference is made to economic trends in several of the world's leading mineral producing and mineral consuming countries. The Canadian mineral industry is next examined in terms of its major developments of the past 20 years and the resultant size, structure, and production diversity of 1964. The position of the Canadian mineral industry in the world industry is then analyzed by tracing changes in mineral supply and demand patterns. Growth of the Canadian industry depends greatly on expansion of export markets because three fifths of the value of production is accounted for by exports. Finally, attention is directed to the outlook for the Canadian mineral industry. Problems facing the industry are surveyed, and an appraisal is made of economic policies that have encouraged industry growth. A forecast of mineral production value in 1970 is included.

"Study of gravity concentrates from the gold-recovery circuit of the Kambalda nickel mill has enabled an assessment to be made of the nature, relative abundance and compositional variability of platinum group element (PGE) minerals and other associated heavy minerals that are present in the Kambalda nickel deposits. The major platinum minerals are sperrylite, PtAs2, and nioncheite, (Pt. Pd, Ni)(Te, Bi)2, and the major palladium minerals are sudburvite, (Pd, Pt, Ni)(Sb, Te, Bi), stibiopalladinite, Pd6Sb2, and palladoarsenide, Pd2 (As, Sb), together with a palladium antimonide and a palladium arsenide that have not been fully characterized. Palladian melonites, which contain up to 10 wt% Pd, and palladian nickeline are also important PGE hosts. Sperrylite and sudburyite are by far the most abundant discrete minerals in the gravity concentrates.Gold occurs as argentian, cuprian and nickeloan—cuprian gold, and as the tellurides calaverite, petzite and auriferous hessite. Silver is present in petzite, hessite and volynskite. Other rare phases contained in the gravity concentrates include native bismuth, altaite, frohbergite, breithauptite, gersdorffite, parkerite, scheelite, tantalite, cassiterite, rutile, bunsenite, gahnite, barite and uvarovite.Descriptions of in-situ occurrences of PGE minerals at Kambalda are rare. Michenerite, PdBiTe, and testibiopalladite, PdSbTe, have been described from a telluride-rich quartz-carbonate vein that intersects massive sulphide ore in Lunnon Shoot. Moncheite has been observed in chalcopyrite-rich stringers, and sudburyite occurs as inclusions in nickeline in a quartz- carbonate veinlet. No discrete PGE minerals have been found within the massive and matrix ore zones in the Kambalda ore- shoots, and the geochemical distribution of PGE suggests that the formation of discrete PGE phases may be related to post- magmatic processes—in particular, metamorphic segregation of sulphides, and the interaction of the ore sulphides, containing PGE in solid solution, with younger hydrothermal fluids. This has led to local redistribution of the PGE, with concentration in footwall stringers and veins, and in reaction zones."

To remove hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide in automotive exhaust by oxidation , a catalyst of 4.2 percent Uз Og , 1.7 percent Cr₂ 0 , and 1.7 percent CuO supported on 1 /8 - inch y- alumina spheres was tested in a reactor in place of the muffler of a 1 / 2 - ton truck . Tests were made with both nonleaded and leaded gasolines . With the engine at operating temperature , tests were made with the engine idling and with the vehicle cruising at 30 mph . Auxiliary air was added to maintain an oxygen concentration of 3 to 4 percent in the gas leaving the catalytic reactor . The vehicle was operated for 83 hours (about 60 percent of the time with the engine idling ) and 525 miles with nonleaded gasoline . Conversions of 98 percent of the hydrocarbons and 100 percent of the carbon monoxide were achieved with the engine idling and with 7,000 ppm carbon atoms and 4- percent carbon monoxide in the feed to the reactor . Hydrocarbon conversions of 75 percent were obtained at cruising speeds of 30 mph with a feed of 1,700 ppm carbon atoms ; the carbon monoxide concentration was less than 0.3 percent in the feed and was unchanged in passage through the reactor . Identical activity was obtained initially in switching to a gasoline containing 1.9 ml tetraethyl lead (TEL) per gallon . However, there was a gradual loss in activity thereafter . Conversions in tests with the engine idling about 50 percent of the time , had decreased by 23 percent for the hydrocarbons and by 25 percent for the carbon monoxide from their initial values after 122 hours and 1,300 miles of operation with leaded gasoline . The levels of radioactive materials in the exhaust of the reactor and the radiation in the vehicle were negligible .

Coal dust produced during the mining process is a prime explosion hazard in underground coal mines. To inert the coal dust and prevent a catastrophic propagating dust explosion, rock dust is applied to the roof, ribs, and floor surfaces of mine entries. Currently, one determination of whether a mine is adequately protected from the coal dust explosion hazard is made by analyzing collected mine dust samples for percent total incombustible content (% TIC). A minimum of 80% TIC is required per 30 CFR 75.403. The as-received moisture of the dust sample is included in the % TIC. Moisture and humidity within a coal mine vary greatly with the seasons, with explosions occurring more frequently during dry winter months. This paper will discuss the fluctuations of the as-received moisture content of the mine dust samples collected by U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration inspectors in 2010 and the observed fluctuations of the moisture content of rock dust within the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Office of Mining Safety and Health Research Bruceton Experimental Mine and the Safety Research Coal Mine over a one-year period.

Gold in sulfide ores is associated predominantly with sulfide minerals and occurs as both microscopic and submicroscopic particles. In non-refractory sulfide ores, gold occurs mainly as coarse- and medium-grained particles. Minute inclusions and submicroscopic gold usually account for a minor portion. In contrast, gold in refractory sulfide ores occurs mainly as minute particles and submicroscopic gold, and microscopic gold usually accounts for an insignificant portion. In gold ores containing carbonaceous material, the preg-robbing nature of carbonaceous material may impose challenges on gold extraction and cause gold losses. To extract gold from refractory sulfide ores, the ore needs to be finely ground and preoxidation is often required. Sulfide host minerals must first be oxidised to create a porous structure through which the cyanide leach solution can penetrate to reach the colloidal gold particles. The oxidation is traditionally achieved by roasting, autoclaving or bacterial oxidation. In carbonaceous sulfide ores exhibiting a preg-robbing nature, the carbonaceous material needs to be treated by roasting, autoclaving or other means to minimise the preg-robbing effect. As a predictive and troubleshooting tool, the gold deportment study plays an important role in gold metallurgy. It determines the deportment of gold in an ore or mill product and identifies the mineralogical issues that may affect or may have affected gold extraction. The information acquired from a gold deportment study can be used to assist in process selection, flow sheet development, recovery improvement and reagent optimisation.CITATION:Zhou, J, 2013. Abstract -The Halfmile Lake stratiform volcanogenic massive-sulfide deposit consists of pyrrhotite­ rich breccia-matrix sulfides and pyrite-pyrrhotite-rich layered sulfides that form a laterally continuous sheet stratigraphically underlain by an extensive pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite-quartz stringer zone. Mineralization is hosted by a sequence of felsic pyroclastics and volcanic-derived, fine-grained metasediments. The proportion of volcanic to sedimentary rocks indicates increasing vent proximity from southwest to northeast across the deposit area. Fine- to medium-grained felsic pyroclastics and roughly equal amounts of fine-grained metasediments comprise the stratigraphic footwall to the mineralization. Quartz-feldspar porphyritic bodies cut this sequence and may have provided the heat source for exhalite activity. Felsic tuffs, locally crystal-rich, and lesser amounts of metasedimentary rocks make up the immediate stratigraphie hanging wall. This sequence is stratigraphically overlain and locally interfmgered with matie volcanics that contain substantial proportions of felsic fragments. Deposition of sulfides post-dated the beginning of felsic volcanism, which places the deposit in the middle of the Lower Tetagouche Group. Compositions of the volcanic rocks range from basait to rhyolite and exhibit sub-alkaline affinities. Strongly overprinted whole-rock, trace-element, and REE geochemical signatures resulting from mineralizing hydrothermal activity confirm the genetic relationship be­tween the stringer zone and the mineralized sheet. Large-scale D1 folding has overturned the entire sequence. D1 thrust faults and related sheath-like folds have profoundly affected sulfide distribution. D2 is manifested by a penetrative S2 foliation, and D3 is represented by large-scale open folds.

"The success or failure of coal mining operations in Western Canada may hinge on the ability to extract thick coal under a variety of geological and mining circumstances and conditions. The paper presents, in who-where, what- how pattern, the current status of undergrounud mining of thick coal seams based on a review of foreign technical literature. The underground production of coal from what are considered to be thick seams is over 300 million tons per year. Methods of mining have evolved, through years of trials and tribulations, capable of meeting the requirements of a modern mine: high bulk outputs from a limited number of mining faces by concentrating in the horizontal (mechanization) and in the vertical (increased working lift)."

No presente trabalho utilizou-se etanol no tratamento de cementação de engrenagens de aço DIN17NiCrMo5 utilizadas em transmissões automotivas. O processo de cementação foi realizado em fornos industriais contínuos utilizando gás natural e etanol como agentes cementantes às temperaturas de 870°C, 890°C e 930°C após o qual as peças foram temperadas e revenidas. As amostras tratadas foram submetidas à análise de fases por difração de raios-X e as microestruturas foram caracterizadas por microscopia ótica. O tamanho de grão austenítico das amostras tratadas foi determinado em 20 ± 2 µm com percentual de austenita retida entre 20% e 30%. A adição de etanol elevou o teor de CO na atmosfera do forno. Foi determinada a variação do teor de carbono em profundidade nas amostras tratadas, o que permitiu o cálculo das constantes de difusão do carbono na austenita.

The Cadia Hill concentrator at Newcrest’s Cadia Operations has undergone several modifications and upgrades to treat an increased throughput rate of harder ore from the Cadia East block cave mine.Subsequent to the commissioning of the expanded circuit, the flotation cleaner block has undergone a systematic optimisation programme tackling all facets of circuit operation. This included debottlenecking circuit constraints and installation of Jameson cell technology to enhance copper and gold recovery while rejecting fluorine and gangue from the concentrate.This paper outlines the improvements over the course of the project and results obtained from the implemented actions.CITATION:Akerstrom, B, Seppelt, J, Waters, T, Bubnich, J and Seaman, D, 2018. The present work had for its purpose: 1) the identification of crack nucleation sites in AISI 4340, quenched to martensite and tempered over a range of 'temperatures; and 2) the comparison of fatigue processes in AISI 4340 with processes observed previously in pure metals From constant def1ection-bending fatigue tests, martensite boundaries were identified as the favored crack nucleation sites in quenched and tempered AISI 4340. It, also, was concluded that the fatigue processes operating- in this lous-alloy steel were similar to Processes observed in pure tnetals. ALTHOUGH much engineering data has been accumulated on the fatigue properties of quenched and tempered martensitic steels,' fatigue as a process is not as well understood in martensite as it is in pure metals.' Important features of the fatigue process, such as the identity of the nucleation sites, have not been determined in the commercially important high-strength low-alloy structural steels. The present work had for its purpose: 1) the identification of crack nucleation sites in a low-alloy steel, i.e., AISI 4340, which had been quenched to martensite and tempered over a range of temperatures; and 2) the comparison of fatigue processes in the AISI 4340 with processes observed previously in pure metals. This comparison of the fatigue processes in the different tempers was restricted to the high-strain low-cycle part of the S-N curve. Under these test conditions, previous work on a number of metals has shown that a large number of cracks are nucleated in less than 30 pct of the fatigue life.3 Furthermore, crack nucleation sites are not restricted to inclusions but are also associated with intrinsic structural characteristics of the metal. MATERIAL A 20-lb ingot of vacuum-melted AISI 4340 (for composition see Table I) was hot-rolled to 1-in.-diam rod and then cold-rolled to a 1-in.-wide strip, 0.08 in. thick. Fatigue specimens, see insert of Fig. 1, were machined from the strip with the long dimension parallel to the rolling direction. m this orientation, the stringers of 1 to 2 p inclusions present in the sheet lay parallel to the stress axis in the specimens. The specimens were austenitited at 2050°F in order to obtain a large prior austenite grain size, i.e., 2 mm, which facilitated the subsequent identification of the prior austenite boundaries. A helium atmosphere was used to minimize decarburization. After austenitiza-tion at 2050°F, the specimens were transferred to a 1450°F furnace so that specimen distortion was held to a minimum in the subsequent oil quench. Previous work4 indicated that refrigeration in liquid nitrogen prior to tempering reduced the percentage of retained austenite in the quenched specimens to less than 5 pct. Tempering was carried out in air over the temperature interval of 200°to 800°F to produce a range of mechanical properties, Table I. The preparation of the fatigue specimen was completed by grinding about 0.005 in. from each surface and electropolishing in a chrome trioxide-acetic acid solution for 30 min. Examination of etched cross sections of specimens prepared in this fashion showed the foregoing specimen preparation to be adequate for the removal of the decarburized layer present after the heat treatment. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the as-quenched microstructure of this alloy consisted of a mixture of martensite plates containing either a high density of dislocations or microtwins. Previous work5'6 indicated that in the course of oil quenching autotem-pering resulted in the formation of E carbide on the martensite and microtwin boundaries. Tempering for 2 hr at temperatures up to about 400°F resulted in further precipitation of the E carbide. Finally, at about 400°F, cementite began to replace the E carbide on the martensite and microtwin boundaries in addition to forming a Widmanstatten structure within the plate matrix. EXPERIMENTAL S-N curves were obtained using electropolished specimens cycled at 1800 cpm as cantilever beams in fully reversed bending at selected constant deflections. The deflections were translated into surface strains by means of a calibration curve obtained through the use of strain gages. An argon atmosphere was used to minimize environmental effects. To investigate the development of fatigue slip bands, the specimens of the different tempers were unidirec-tionally bent to a surface strain of 0.005 to 0.007, photographed to record the location and appearance of slip bands so introduced, and then cycled to failure

As one of the main power sources, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) will continue to be applied on a large scale in the future market. Commercialized LIBs cathode materials contain various valuable metal elements including Li, Co, and Ni. The development of green and efficient recycling technology is essential. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have recently emerged as a new class of green solvents that could potentially be applied for the LIBs recycling industry due to their capability to leach the active materials without the introduction of environmentally hazardous reagents as used in conventional hydrometallurgy process. Considering the rapid progress, a critical review focusing on the progress and fundamentals about the overall efficiency has practical significance for the further advancement of this field. Herein, we briefly introduce the overall process of using DESs for LIBs recycling and specifically focus on the efficiency of each step. Current fundamental understandings and new experimental approaches to enhance the efficiency of the leaching process, the extraction process, and reusability are summarized. We expect this review article to inspire scientists to use DESs as powerful tools for advancing the frontiers of LIBs recycling.

Introduction The sliding-form method of erecting concrete structures was first devised and used in the early part of this century by the Sante Fe Railroad Company for the erection of a grain elevator at Santa Fe, New Mexico. A somewhat related principle has been employed for a number of years in shaft lining work and, to our knowledge, was perfected in Butte, Montana, but until the building of the concrete headframe at the Jeffrey mine of the Canadian Johns-Manville Company, Ltd., at Asbestos, Que., the method, as applied to surface structures, was quite foreign to the mining industry in Canada. The current shortage and cost of structural steel shapes has no doubt contributed more than any other single factor to the investigations that have led to the use of reinforced concrete as a headframe building material. Mining men in western Quebec and northern Ontario have shown a great deal of interest in the design and construction of the headframe at the East Sullivan mine in Bourlamaque township, Que., and we have had many queries regarding the methods used and, in particular, for an explanation of the sliding-form principle. This article is written in an attempt to set forth the conditions which were to be met; to explain the construction methods used, and to discuss the economy of concrete headframes as compared with the conventional steel structures with which the mining fraternity is familiar.

"In the 1960’s, when large flotation machines appeared on the market, this was a part of a world-wide trend towards the use of ever larger machine units.One factor that has played a decisive part in this development is the increased of the amounts of ore that have to be handled as the exploitation of successively poorer ores becomes necessary. The advancing application of instrumentation and automation has worked in the same direction.In 1970, a working group was set up within Outokumpu Oy, for the purpose of flotation machine development. The principal task of this group was to be the design and development of- a new type of rotor of increased efficiency, especially for the dispersion of large amounts of air- a mechanical-pneumatic flotation machine of substantially larger size that existing plant.This development project required an extensive program of theoretical investigation and experimental studies at several concentration plants of the company.The commonest flotation machine presently used in the concentration plants of Outokumpu Oy is the VK-3. It is of the mechanical-pneumatic type, and the volume of its cell tanks is 2.5 m3 per shaft. This machine was developed within the company, and its first development phase i s represented by the OKKO 3, built for the Kotalahti concentrator in 1959. It was, in its time, comparable in volume to the largest machines that were then in use anywhere in the world."
