"IntroductionAt TransAlta Utilities Corporation's Highvale Mine, located west of Edmonton, Alberta (Fig. I and 2), dragline stripping has proved to be a practical and economical method of overburden removal and future plans have been based upon the continued use of draglines (Fig. 3) as the major stripping equipment (Williams, 1979, Nikols et al., 1986). However, long range planning has shown that the capacity of draglines alone will be exceeded in the early 1990s as mining progresses into deeper overburden cover (Tapics, 1983). Strip ratios will increase from I.3 bank m!/ t of coal in 1985to 4.5 bank m3 / t in 1995. During this period the depth of overburden will increase substantially and the areas to be mined will be characterized by weak soils including glacially displaced overburden. This increased overburden depth in relatively weak soils will make it impractical to _continue side casting by draglines without prestripping in advance. In 1983, a major investigation was initiated to determine what additional overburden removal equipment was appropriate to the Highvale operations, and recognizing the long delivery times of this major equipment. when it would be required. This paper describes studies and tests which were undertaken in 1983 and 1984 to select prestripping methods and equipment for the future operation of the mine.Previous planning studies have shown that with the current burn schedule and with the economies of progressing from low cover to high cover, as has been practiced in the past, overburden volumes will exceed the capacity of the existing draglines in the early 1990s (Fig. 4). These previous studies had placed reliance on (I tandem dragline operation for future overburden removal requirements up to a depth of 45 m throughout the Highvale Mine. New drilling together with the associated geotechnical studies and some detailed planning on the practicality of using tandem draglines, created concerns about their universal application. Even without considering geotechnical conditions there was a depth limitation to tandem dragJines and substantial prestripping would be required to achieve the ultimate depths."

By means of the measurement of the enduring property and microstructure observation, an investigation has been made into the influences of the element Re and TCP phase on the enduring property of the single crystal nickel base superalloys. Results show that the needle-like TCP phase is precipitated along the <110> orientation on {111} planes in Re-containing/free superalloys during the long term aging, the TCP phase is identified as µ phase, and the precipitated µ phase in 4.5%Re alloy is gradually spheroidized during aging. Thereinto, the needle-like µ phase may obviously decrease the enduring lifetimes of the alloys due to the consumption of the refractory elements and the effect of the stress concentration. But the stress concentration is not easily generated in the regions near the spherical-like µ phase, which is a main reason of reducing the enduring lifetime of 4.5%Re alloy to a small extent.

During August, 1926, with the consent of Mr. Schell, mine manager, the writer conducted a mill test on this company&apos;s concentrators. Mr. Schell not only gave him his permission, but rendered all possible assistance. Although it was impossible to take all the samples one could have wished to obtain, yet the salient points of the mill flow-sheet were sampled for a continuous period of eight hours, and from these samples and separate data supplied by the manager, valuable information was collected.THE MINEThis is a true vein-type of mine; the lode formations, striking almost due north-south, cut the large porphyritic intrusion at right angles. There are three distinct veins on this property - parallel, persistent, and dipping at an angle varying between 40&#176; - 50&#176; to the horizontal.The country rock is very sound, and timber, save for the small amount required for ore chutes, is entirely absent from all mine workings.The lode varies from a width of 1 in. to 8 in., but the stopes are carried forward with a minimurn width of about 30 in.The mine is particularly dry for a West Coast property, and conditions underground are very favourable. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo o estudo para otimização de distintas condições de tratamentos térmicos de solubilização e envelhecimento em liga forjada de NiTi rica em Ni visando características e propriedades adequadas para aplicações superelásticas. As características microestruturais e composicionais foram avaliadas por Difração de Raio-X (DRX), por Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV) associada à Difração de Elétrons Retroespalhados (EBSD) e ao Espectrômetro de Energia Dispersiva de Raio-X (EDX), e correlacionadas com as medidas de dureza Vickers. Baseados em resultados da literatura, apresentou características mais promissoras para tratamentos de solubilização a 950ºC por 120 minutos conjugado com envelhecimento a 350ºC por 30 minutos, ambos com resfriamento em água.

O presente trabalho propôs-se avaliar a potencialidade de obtenção de uma microestrutura dual phase em um aço baixo carbono com microadição de molibdênio e nióbio, laminado a frio Full Hard. Os estudos foram suportados pelas análises da recristalização da ferrita, da fração volumétrica de austenita formada e sua evolução composicional/estrutural em função da temperatura de encharque no intervalo do campo intercrítico durante o encharque no tratamento térmico proposto com resfriamento em salmoura – a fim de simular o encharque no recozimento contínuo. As caracterizações microestruturais e mecânicas foram avaliadas por Microscopia Ótica, Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV), Dilatometria e ensaios de dureza Vickers, e confrontadas com estudos prévios via Espectroscopia de Raios-X de Dispersão de Energia (EDS).

A panial equilibrium model? to simulate the dissolution of millerite (NiS) in aqueous solutions containing copper(II) chloride as the oxidizing species has been developed. The predominant copper(I) and copper(II) species are CuQ3 and CUO2 respectively. The model computes the initial concentrations of the species present in the aqueous phase under the specified input conditions, prior to the simulation of dissolution. During the dissolution of millerite, nickel enters the leach liquor as NiH and it has been found that the H+ decreases as a function of NiS dissolution. The simulation has been accomplished under conditions prevailing during actual dissolution, with only one mineral undergoing dissolution. The model can be applied for the simulation of co-dissolution of two or more sulfides. Under the given conditions, the precipitation of Cu1(OH»)O is negligible but loss of Cu(1l) could be significant if the initial H+ is lower than 0.03 M. The results of the simulation compare favorably with experimental observations.

Conventional augered, cast-in-place (ACIP) piles were introduced into the New York City area as a result of the damage to existing structures caused by pile driving operations. ACIP piles are often specified where deep foundations are to be installed adjacent to transit facilities, sensitive underground utilities or in close proximity to existing structures. However, loss-of-ground issues associated with the installation of ACIP piles have prevented the wide-scale use of these systems. Beginning in 2002, Berkel & Company Contractors, Inc. began using its augered, cast-in-place displacement (ACIPD) system in the New York City area. Like conventional ACIP piles, this system produces almost no vibration. Also, as almost no material is brought to the surface, there is no opportunity for loss of ground. This paper presents a description of Berkel&apos;s displacement pile system and a brief discussion of six projects in the New York City area that have been executed with this system over the past two years.

O presente trabalho teve como principal objetivo estudar a evolução da recristalização em chapa de zinco, e para tal objetivo, chapas finas de zinco laminadas a quente foram sobrepostas e processadas pela técnica de deformação plástica severa conhecida como NECAE (Non Equal Channel Angular Extrusion). Em seguida, as amostras foram submetidas a um tratamento térmico de recozimento para recristalização com diferentes temperaturas e tempos de encharque. Para tal objetivo, foram utilizadas análises de microscopia óptica e dureza Vickers. De acordo com os resultados obtidos, observou-se que após o processamento via NECAE houve uma pequena fração recristalizada, e esta aumentou de acordo com o aumento do tempo e da temperatura de tratamento térmico.

The Bureau of Mines has developed MULSIM/BM, an improved computer program using the boundary-element approach for geomechanical analysis of mine plans in single or multiple coal seams. This Information Circular presents the improved features of the MULSIN/BM program. The four major improvements are the following: (1) Ability to specify up to 26 material property sets. (2) A new material model capability for gob and inserted materials such as packwalls or cribs. (3) Ability to model a large area with a grid of undivided blocks and to subdivide only a specified fine-mesh portion of these blocks into elements. (4) Specification of extraction ratios for the undivided blocks. In addition, an interactive graphics mesh generator program was written to accompany MULSIM/BM. A complete user&apos;s guide and program listings are included within the appendixes. The MULSIM/BM and mesh generator programs are available on tape from the National Technical Information Service.3

The solvent extraction section of an old Uranium Plant in the Vaal River region (North West Province in South Africa) produced a substance called CRUD (Chalk River Unidentified Deposit) that formed within the aqueous/organic interface of the settler of the solvent extraction circuit. The CRUD was deposited together with gold tailings to the tailings dam many years ago. Previous research done on the CRUD confirmed that exposed CRUD leaches Mn and Ni at concentrations that are well above their acceptable risk limits as well as Zn that leaches at concentrations that are slightly lower than its acceptable risk limit. Soil washing and bioremediation technologies were employed to treat the contaminated soil. &nbsp; Various laboratory test work and the pilot scale studies were conducted in parallel with each other and the results of the laboratory studies were used to determine critical parameters. Four lixiviants, ie sulfuric acid, acetic acid, oxalic acid and ethylene diamine acetic acid were tested at three concentration levels ie 0.001 M, 0.0001 M and 0.00001 M, respectively. Column tests showed that the leaching of the heavy metals increases as the soil porosity increases. Silica sand was added to increase porosity of the contaminated soil. Highest Mn removal was achieved mainly by sulfuric and oxalic acid at 0.001M at all soil levels. EDTA was significantly efficient in the removal of Ni and Zn. The recovery of heavy metals, particularly Mn, decreased as the depth of sampling increased. &nbsp; Heterogeneous bacteria and filamentous organism plate counts were conducted to evaluate the growth of the bacteria and filamentous organisms in the soil. Results showed that more organism growth took place in the bioremediated soil with a fertilizer added to it. The leaching of metals from the soil that was bioremediated in the pilot study was generally higher than the extraction of the metals from the soil that was leached with no bioremediation carried out. The results from this study suggest that the leaching of heavy metals from the contaminated soil is to a large extent dependant on the pH of the leaching solution. By increasing the soil&apos;s porosity and bioremediating the soil, higher extractions of metals were achieved.

At the exploration stage for new mining projects or for medium- and long-term areas of existing mines (typical of South African gold mines), drilling data is on a relatively large grid. This grid is normally larger than the selective mining units (SMUs). Direct estimates for the SMUs and also of much larger block units will then be smoothed due to the information effect and the high error variance. Any capital-intensive project decisions made on the basis of any of the smoothed estimates will tend to misrepresent the economic value of the project or operation, i.e. the average grade of blocks above cut-off will be underestimated and the tonnage overestimated for cut-off grades below the mean grade of the orebody. This paper presents a direct approach technique for deriving recoverable resources, referred to as localized direct conditioning (LDC), designed to correct smoothing effects and also to provide support corrections.

An earlier Bureau of Mines report4 provided low-temperature heat-capacity and entropy data for three sodium vanadates. This report continues the study of vanadates by presenting analogous data for three crystalline calcium vanadates - calcium metavanadate (CaV206), calcium pyrovanadate (Ca2V2O7), and calcium orthovanadate (Ca3V208). No similar data for these compounds have been published previously. MATERIALS All three vanadate samples were prepared by the Bureau of Mines by heating stoichiometric mixtures of reagent-grade calcium carbonate and vanadium pentoxide.5 Calcium metavanadate was prepared at 610° to 660° C. A stoichiometric mixture was heated for 17 days with intervening grindings, mixings, and adjustments of composition, as shown necessary by chemical analysis. The final analysis gave calcium oxide, 23.48 pct. (theoretical, 23.57 pct.) and vanadium pentoxide, 76.32 pct. (theoretical, 76.43 pct.). The sample also contained 0.11 pct. acid-insoluble matter. The X-ray diffracton pattern showed no lines of free calcium or vanadium oxides. No X-ray diffraction patterns were found in the literature for any of these substances.

The prospect of utilisation of phosphate ores which contain high P2O5 values associated with Al and Fe has produced a great deal of interest over many years. Processing options have generally been based on the utilisation of by-products which were required to offset the processing costs. &nbsp; This paper presents a range of processing options which have been investigated at laboratory or technical scale on phosphate ores which predominantly consist of crandallite, CaAl3(PO4)2(OH)5.3H2O and millisite, Ca(NaK)Al6(PO4)4(OH)9.3H2O. Christmas Island (Indian Ocean) and Mt Weld (Western Australia) phosphate ores are good examples of such feedstocks. It is expected that these processes may also be applicable to such phosphate ores from other locations.

Foi desenvolvido um software para cálculo do balanço térmico dos fornos de reaquecimento de placas da Usiminas em Ipatinga. Ele realiza a busca automática de dados operacionais e das placas reaquecidas, valida, trata os dados e realiza os cálculos das parcelas de entrada e saída dos aportes térmicos para cada forno. Além disso, são calculados o rendimento, a eficiência térmica e o índice de ocupação dos fornos. O desenvolvimento foi realizado em ambientes visuais, com utilização de interfaces gráficas para fácil interação dos usuários com o software. A validação do software foi realizada pela comparação de resultados obtidos na busca automática com valores reais operacionais de balanços térmicos já realizados nos fornos.

A temperatura de carregamento do ferro-gusa no convertedor é de suma importância para o acerto do balanço térmico do convertedor. Dessa maneira, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo a proposição de uma equação de modelamento da perda térmica na panela de ferro-gusa da thyssenkrupp CSA com o intuito de prever, com melhor acurácia, a temperatura de carregamento no convertedor. Os resultados encontrados pelo modelo foram comparados com os valores reais de perda térmica na panela e concluiu-se que a equação desenvolvida se mostrou bastante assertiva e abrangente. Foram consideradas novas variáveis nesta abordagem que, até então, não eram utilizadas pelo modelo de perda térmica nas panelas de ferro-gusa da CSA.

"During the past two years the Association of Norwegian Foundries in Norway has been running a project in evaluation of CAD/CAM systems for foundries.In this work we have had a closer look to the various steps from drawings to the finished castings. On this background we have made a specification of the special needs in the foundry process. The main content of this paper is a presentation of this specification.Some CAD/CAM sytems have been compared with the specification and a summary of the result is presented.In the project we have also had a closer look at some systems where we actually have tried the user interface and some of the possibilities in the systems. In this way we have gained a more detailed knowledge of the systems and we have also got some experience in NC-machining from the systems.IntroductionThe development of CAD/CAM systems has taken place with almost no interaction with the foundry business. This becomes clear when you are having a closer look at the systems. Most of them have not the possibility to describe the complex sculptured surfaces that is often found on castings. The people developing the software, have paid little or no attention to the problems arising when a geometry is going to be transformed for the casting process. Among the problems are the decision of where to place the parting line and to adjust the draft angle. These problems must be solved properly to be able to withdraw the model from the sandmould. In die casting the problems must be solved to be able to get the casting out of the die.In Norway some companies have been developing CAD/CAM systems for several years, with limited interest in foundry problems till 1983. To present the special foundry problems to them a specification of the needs was made that year. Another reason for making this specification, was to compare it with the CAD/CAM systems on the market (1).Design of castingsGeometry transferThe foundries in Norway are small units with almost no design of their own casting products. They are subcontractors receiving paper drawings and limited informations about the product from the mechanical industry both in Norway and in other European countries. This is going to change, and in the future the geometry will be transferred by magnetic tape or by a network of computers."

This report presents a structural analysis of the economies of Spokane County, Washington and 21 surrounding counties. An economic trading region made up of 22 eastern Washington, northern Idaho, and western Montana counties, with Spokane, Washington as the central place, was defined for this study. The Micro IMPLAN modeling system with the 1990 county database was used to create an Input/Output based model of the regional economy. The leading industries, with respect to employee compensation, employment, value of exports, and total industry output are shown for each county and the region. The value of total industry output from natural resource based industries is also shown (or each county and the region. The total industry output from the Spokane Economic Trade Area (S ETA) region is valued at $22.3 billion. The SETA region provides $7.1 billion in employee compensation to a work force of 374,000. Spokane County, Washington accounts for about 50 percent of the regional total output, employee compensation, and employment. Both Spokane County and the region as a whole produce about 80 percent of total industry output for final demand with the remaining 20 percent going to intermediate inputs for further production. About $7.4 billion of the $22.3 billion SETA output is exported from the region. Spokane County exports about $4.7 billion, or 41 percent of the $11.5 billion Spokane County output. Exports account for more than 50 percent of the total output in 12 of the 22 counties within the region. Based on the output of the top 25 industries in each county and the SETA region about 9 percent of the industry output from Spokane County and 18 percent of the regional industry output come from natural resource based industries. For counties other than Spokane County, total industry&apos; output from natural resource based industries represents from 12 percent to 81 percent of county output from the top 25 industries. Natural resource industries account for more than 50 percent of total county output in 8 counties within the region

The Bureau of Mines examined and tested the rhodonite deposits of the Silverton lead-zinc district, San Juan County, Colo., as a possible source of domestic manganese. Exploration and development work by several mining companies and preliminary reconnaissance of the area by Bureau of Mines engineers indicated the presence of extensive manganese resources in the form of rhodonite. This report summarizes the results of laboratory beneficiation tests made on samples of different type and grade material obtained from surface and underground exposures of seven veins in the district. Surface and underground examinations revealed the presence of several prominent veins that could be traced up to 2 miles for a single vein along the surface. The principal veins average about 50 feet in width and apparently carry rhodonite to considerable depth. Underground samples were taken from the Sunnyside, Silver Queen, Washington, Independence, and Scotia veins. Samples also were taken from surface exposures of the Sunnyside Extension and Hidden Treasure veins.

"INTRODUCTION In accordance with the outline of investigation described in a previous report 5 of the Bureau of Mines dealing with the use of acrolein for detecting leakage of methyl chloride from unit--type refrigerating systems, the work has been extended to include an investigation of its use in a multiple system, This report gives the results of analysis of samples of the gas from representative units of a multiple system charged with methyl chloride containing approximately 0.9 per cent acrolein by volume, The results furnish a basis for estimating the Warning that would be given in event of leakage. "Ternary mixed sulfides of some transition metals MTS3 (M=Ba, ·Pb, T=Ti, Zr) were synthesized by a relatively low temperature process using sulfur melt. The mixture of starting materials, such as, metals and/or binary sulfides and a large excess of sulfur was reacted in a vacuum-sealed Pyrex or quartz ampoule at 350- 600 °C for one to three weeks. After the reaction, the remaining sulfur was completely removed by a process composed of filtration of sulfur melt and followed dissolution in CS2• The binary sulfides impurities coexisted in the products were removed by rinsing the products in water and acetone. By using the above method, BaTiS3, PbTiS3 and BaZrS3 'Were obtained in pure form. The effect of addition of halides on the yields of these ternary sulfides were also discussed.IntroductionThere have been a vast number of studies on the preparation and physical and /or chemical properties of mixed metal oxides. As is well known, some of such compounds exhibit excellent materials properties, causing them for use in mechanical, electronic, magnetic and chemical devices. Not a few mixed metal sulfides show similar physico-chemical properties to those of the corresponding mixed metal oxides. However, the study of the mixed sulfide crystals is rather sparse mainly due to difficulties in preparing these compounds. In various methods which have been adopted for preparing mixed sulfides, the simplest method would be the solid-solid reaction of the component binary sulfides or elements. However, there are always diffusional constraints with regard to the reactions in solid phases causing it necessary to heat the reactants at sufficiently high temperatures, viz. 800-1200°C. On the other hand, some mixed sulfides are unstable at high temperatures or to change their materials properties due to sulfur nonstoichiometry and structural modification depending on temperature, i.e., synthesis of such compounds needs to be made at lower temperatures. Processing in alkali halide melts is hopeful to overcome the above problems but to obtain the halide melts the temperatures above ~ 600 °C is needed. Low temperature reaction has been carried out for the preparation of Hg1.24TiS4, which was formed by the ·combination of TiS2 and molten Hg metal at 320°C[l]. Reaction of WS2 with LiBH4 melt at 350°C yielded LixWS2[2]. These sophisticated methods, however, can be applied only to the vary special cases."
