The National Economic Viewpoint? Any substantial project undertaken by private enterprise would normally be subjected to a Discounted Cash Flow analysis of its commercial viability, and would proceed only if the rate of return was judged satisfactory. A 'national viewpoint' analysis attempts to do the same but from the viewpoint of the community as a whole. The objective is to ensure that those projects are undertaken which yield the best return, economic and social, to the nation as a whole.

The focus in the iron ore industry has shifted from increasing production volumes with less regard for cost, to efficient production of quality tonnes. BHP Billiton iron ore geoscience and exploration has embedded infrared spectroscopic sensing of drill hole samples to help meet this challenge.Infrared spectroscopy is delivering mineral predictions that are used for (automated) geology logging and modelling. The spectra are processed together with other available data sets to predict geometallurgical and geotechnical variables that include lump per cent and uniaxial compressive strength.Trials are ongoing to test the benefit of infrared spectroscopy during mining, including the analysis of grade control samples and remote sensing of mine faces. Results show great benefits in the fields of short-term geology modelling, better understanding of material (handling) properties, identification of geotechnical risk areas and high resolution ore-waste delineation.These trials are bringing BHP Billiton iron ore closer to its ultimate goal of having infrared spectroscopic data collected across the mining value chain. Once such data are available everywhere, regression models can be trained at one point (eg iron grade model trained on exploration samples) and be applied elsewhere (eg iron grade predicted on mine faces). Such predictive analytics will enable not only high precision mining, but also provide maximum time to tailor plant design to the ore in the ground, based on learnings from ores processed in other plants. "A study has been conducted to characterize the fatigue life in 7050-T7451 thick plate by the comparison between an experimental alloy and commercial alloy. The fracture origins were specified and their sizes were measured by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Additionally, the size, number density and spatial distribution of porosity in the experimental material and commercial material were characterized and compared, using X-ray Computed Tomography(XCT). The results showed that microporosity was the predominant site for crack nucleation and subsequent failure of the experimental alloy. However, as for the commercial alloy, fatigue cracks were found to originate from constituent particles. The presence of microporosity in 7050-T7451 thick plate reduced fatigue life of an order of magnitude or more compared to the commercial alloy. The relationships between size of origin and fatigue life were proposed. It was showed that the fatigue endurance was reduced when the size of porosity increased.INTRODUCTION 7xxx series aluminum alloys, due to their combination of high strength, high resistance to stress corrosion cracking, and good fracture toughness, are widely used in structural engineering applications where high-strength and low-density characteristics are fundamental design requirements (Williams& Starke, 2003). Every designer is striving to find an optimal combination of properties including strength, corrosion resistance and fatigue resistance (Wanget al., 2016). Based on the design principles of aircraft, a higher fatigue resistance of aluminum alloys are required. Thus, many investigations have been carried out on the microstructures and its effect on fatigue properties of the 7xxx series aluminum alloy (Robson, 2004; Schubbe, 2009).Microporosity, which is a common defect in casting materials, can lead to a significant deterioration of mechanical performance and fatigue resistance, especially in the high alloyed 7xxx aluminum alloys. The actual valid loading area decreases due to microporosity, which results in detrimental effect on the mechanical properties. Many experimental studies have been conducted in this research field. Mayer et al.(2003) investigated the fatigue properties of magnesium alloys produced by high-pressure die-casting. The results show that porosity in magnesium alloys greater than0.18mm diameter may be considered as the most important material defect for high cycle fatigue and fully reversed loading conditions. Nadot et al.(2004) found that the near surface defects are much more dangerous than the internal defects. Wang et al.(2001a) used the Weibull statistics method to analysis the influence of the microporosity, oxides and particles on the A356-T6 alloy fatigue life. The results show that, the porosity is more detrimental to fatigue life than oxide films and particles. With regard to fatigue resistance, although the deleterious effect of microporosity has been generally acknowledged, a quantitative understanding between casting microporosity and fatigue life in 7050-T7451 plate is not well established."

Nesse trabalho para caracterização metalúrgica dos revestimentos compostos pela mistura das ligas AWS ERNiCrMo - 3 E AWS ERNiCrMo - 4 soldados pelo processo MIG/MAG duplo arame foram realizadas análises micrográficas por meio de microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Observou-se semelhança entre os precipitados do topo e da interface do metal de solda com o substrato e que a microestrutura obtida com a soldagem das duas ligas, simultaneamente, resultou na mistura das microestruturas, obtidas a partir das soldagens com cada uma das ligas de forma isolada. O ensaio para avaliação do desempenho da mistura quanto à resistência a corrosão foi realizado conforme a norma ASTM - G 48, método C para determinação da temperatura crítica de pite da mistura das ligas. Foram utilizadas amostras dos revestimentos com maior e menor diluição. O resultado do ensaio apontou que os revestimentos soldados apresentaram temperatura crítica de pite superior ao da liga AWS ERNiCrMo-3 e semelhante ao da liga AWS ERNiCrMo-4.

A tecnologia de sensor-based sorting faz uso de sensores high-tech para pré-concentrar seletivamente partículas de minérios que tenham teores toleráveis para planta de beneficiamento, rejeitando as partículas que são totalmente estéreis ou rejeitos. A pré-concentração de carvão assistido pelo método Dual Energy X-Ray Transmition possibilita separar seletivamente o carvão com melhor quantidade de matéria orgânica das rochas silicáticas com maior densidade. O objetivo desse trabalho foi investigar a afinidade da tecnologia de sorting na pré-concentração do carvão mineral da Carbonífera do Cambuí/PR assistido por sensor de raios-x. Os testes foram realizados em dois lotes cujo range granulométrico foi -4”+2” e -2”+1”. A pré-concentração foi feita em 2 cortes de separação, o primeiro para retirar o rejeito e o segundo para obter 2 tipos de produtos. Os resultados indicaram que 52,15% da massa foi rejeitada, concentrando 47,85% do material de carvão na fração média -2”+1”. Na fração grossa -4”+2” foi rejeitado 62,51% da massa e concentrado 37,49% de carvão. As análises imediatas dos pré-concentrados mostraram que na fração grossa houve redução de 44,57% de cinzas totais e houve aumento de 4,59% para 8,29% de enxofre [S], enquanto na fração média a redução foi de 36,98% de cinzas totais e de 1,19 % [S].

TEe increased use of heat-resistant alloys (26 per cent Cr, 12 per cent Ni; 16 per cent Cr, 35 per cent Ni; 12 per cent Cr, 60 per cent Ni; etc.) in recent years has been accompanied by continued demands by the consumer for improvement in properties. The manufacturers of these materials, of necessity, have resorted to more critical studies of the basic causes of variations in fundamental properties. To keep pace with the need for augmented information, previous techniques of investigation have been refined and new test methods and instruments created. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the apparatus, experimental technique and precision of measurement that were employed in the exploration of properties of heat-resistant alloys presented in a companion paper. The detailed precautions in experimental procedure essential for attainment of accurate and comparable data at elevated temperatures cannot be too highly emphasized. The Creep Test Since the fundamental concepts of creep testing have been recognized for the past 20 years, present interest is restricted to refinements in equipment and experimental procedure. The creep-test iaboratory constructed for the American Brake Shoe and Foundry Co. is designed to permit I000-hr. tests in the temperature range of I200° to 2 200°F. with a choice of applied stress extending from jo to 50,000 lb. per sq. in. in increments of 50 lb. per sq. in. To simplify the calculation of weight combinations, the loading beams (Fig. I) are provided with counterweights to eliminate the tare. The precision of the knife-edges (10:I ratio) is such that a 10-gram weight placed on the upper specimen grip will be exactly balanced by a I-gram weight attached to the loading shackle. Check of the loading weights proved the maximum error to be 0.06 per cent. Axial alignment is provided by crossed knife-edges in the grip seats. The furnaces are similar in design to those of Crane and Company, Battelle Memorial Institute, and the U.S. Steel Corporation. An 80 per cent Pt, zo per cent Rh No. 19 B. and S. gauge wire is used as the heating element. The details of -construction are shown in the radiograph reproduced in Fig. 2. The windings are held in place on an alundum tube with aludum cement; the distribution of turns is adjusted to give a maximum temperature gradient of , I°F. over a 4-in. gauge length (Fig. 3). To avoid sharp temperature differentials at the ends of the test section, the length of the furnace is four times the gauge length. Sixteen-inch coupons are used „ to reduce the temperature of the threaded joints and thus to facilitate removal from the grips. ? THE man is always greater than his work.? The training of the men who are to develop the mineral resources of the world is the most important problem connected with mining engineering. It becomes ever more important to civilization as the mineral wealth of the earth approaches exhaustion. I have therefore decided to consider a few of the more important problems arising in the training of the mining engineer, and especially those arising in America. THE PECULIAR NATURE OF MINERAL WEALTH. Mining and Agriculture are the two fundamental arts. Without the latter our existence would be precarious; without the former, our civilization impossible. Agriculture furnishes that regular supply of food and raiment which leads to the growth of large communities in which cultivated leisure first becomes possible; while raining furnishes the metallic thread from which is woven that complex fabric we call civilization. But in these two arts the conditions for success are widely different. Most of the crops that the farmer reaps may be harvested year after year, and the proper fertilizers being added, he may continue the annual harvest indefinitely, while, as a result of cultivation, his farm becomes yearly more valuable. But the crop the miner reaps can be harvested but once in the history of the race. Our mineral wealth has taken unknown ages to mature in the bosom of the earth. Magnetite (Fe3O4) ore is concentrated by low-magnetic-field drums to recover a magnetite concentrate that is low in silica (SiO2). The presence of SiO2 in the magnetite concentrate for steel production increases the steel processing costs, so a major challenge in magnetic concentration is to lower the SiO2 grade in the Fe concentrate. This work presents studies that were carried out on the removal of SiO2 from the magnetite concentration at the plant scale. Studies were performed with a three 36 × 96″ drum unit processing 46 ton/h of rougher magnetite concentrate. These studies showed that silica appears in the magnetite concentrate by three mechanisms, namely SiO2 entrainment in Fe3O4 chains, heterocoagulation between Fe3O4 and SiO2 particles, and mineral locking of SiO2 to Fe3O4. The SiO2 entrainment mechanism had the highest contribution (75%) to the SiO2 recovered in the Fe concentrate. Electrokinetic studies on Fe3O4 and SiO2 showed that heterocoagulation occurs because of the low negative zeta potential of the minerals at the pH of the plant slurry. This study also showed that a high percentage of ultrafine size SiO2 particles trapped in Fe3O4 agglomerates was not removed by the dilution water for the slurry fed to the drum. To lower the SiO2 recovery in the drum magnetic concentration process, work should be directed towards the removal of trapped SiO2 in Fe3O4 agglomerates.

To reduce fuel consumption in industrial and commercial fuel-burning plants throughout the Nation, cooperative efforts of thousands of individuals are required. These individuals are scattered over the country and hold various positions in thousands of independent establishments. To accomplish as much as possible on this problem during the Second World War, it was decided that personal contact with fuel users was absolutely necessary; publicity, although an important factor, could not by itself give satisfactory and needed results. It was planned to have qualified engineers visit commercial establishments to go over with them the problem of reducing their fuel consumption. The specific plan, toward which all efforts aimed and around which the rest of the program revolved, consisted in brief of 1. Conference of visiting engineer with management to obtain cooperation. 2. Appointment by management of a plant employee as fuel "waste chaser." 3. Work of engineer with "waste chaser" and, if appropriate, with plant operators on most efficient operation of equipment.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the feasibility of strengthening experimental magnesium-base sheet alloys by strain softening induced by controlled cold rolling followed by selective heat treatment. Relatively small alloying additions having potential for producing strain softening were selected from metals that are readily avail-able. Tensile properties comparable to minimum properties of the most commonly used magnesium-base sheet alloy AZ31B, in the H24 condition (strain-hardened and partially annealed), were obtained in an Mg-IMM (mischmetal)-O.5Mn alloy after strain-softening rolling followed by heat treatment. Tensile properties of the experimental alloys in certain conditions are also compared with minimum tensile properties of other standard magnesium sheet alloys. Incidental to the principal objectives, apparent superplastic behavior was observed in three experimental magnesium-base alloys containing MM, MM plus manganese, and MM plus zirconium.

Precipitation in the northeastern United States, Florida, California and in many industrialized areas of the world is now more acidic (lower pH) than can be accounted for by natural causes. At the same time, the acidity of many lakes and streams in the northeastern United States has been measured and found to be similar to that of actual rain. These facts have led to conclusions that the two conditions are related. Coal burning utilities, 700 to 1000 miles upwind, have been accused of being the cause, leading to proposals for strict emission controls on the alleged offenders. The costs of these controls would place an estimated $10 to $15 billion capital burden on utility customers in about 15 states plus $2 to $6 billion annual operating costs. There appears to be no direct well-established scientific evidence that the accused are guilty but that the indictment is based largely on circumstantia1 evidence. This study examines the evidence, describes the situation and proposes what must be done to reduce the acid precipitation in an orderly cost beneficial manner. It is interesting to observe that studies by the different adversaries on the acid precipitation issue come to different conclusions largely because they do not read the same literature, but selectively develop evidence to support their own points of view, This study will try to review the issues impartially and reach a position of scholarly balance.

Metallic copper of purity equal to commercial electrolytic copper is deposited during the anodic dissolution of technically available white metal, Cu2S, in m acidic solution of' copper(II) sulfate as electrolyte and copper sheets as cathodes. The process may be applied on commercial scale since it has the advantage of by passing the converting and poling steps, decreasing pollution problems due to SO, and recovering the sulfur of the white metal in the elemental form. The anodic dissolution is believed to take place in three steps: The working conditions that lead to 98 pct cathodic current efficiency are: 30 gpl Cu2+ and 100 gpl H2SO4 in electrolyte, current density 1.0 amp per sq dm, and tetnperature of bath 40°C'. DURING the smelting of copper, nickel, lead, and zinc sulfide ores, large amounts of sulfur dioxide are produced. Because the release of this gas in the atmosphere causes pollution problems, many attempts were made in the past for its recovery either in liquified form or processed to sulfuric acid. Although these two forms of sulfur are the usual forms that are consumed by the chemical and metallurgical industries, their storage and transport usually raise economic problems. It was realized, long ago, that a process by which sulfur can be recovered directly in the elemental form would be most attractive. Elemental sulfur is easily stored and transported, and is readily converted to SO2, H2S, or H2SO4 when needed. Processes aimed to recover the metals from their sulfide ores, and at the same time by-product sulfur in the elemental form, were recently reviewed.' As early as 1882, Marchese2 patented a process in which a matte having the composition: Cu 15, Pb 14, Fe 41, and S 25 pct was electrolyzed. According to cohen3 the process was applied on a pilot scale by the Aktiengesellschaft fur Bergbau-, Blei-, und Zinkhiitten-betriebe at Stolberg, Rheinland, Germany. The process was unsuccessful, however, owing to the contamination of the electrolyte during electrolysis. Studies in this field were reported by Bernfeld4 and Egli.5 Borchers et a1.6-8 developed the process further by using white metal (Cu 78.2 pct, S 19.6 pct) instead of the matte, and a pilot plant was operated by the Mansfeldschen Kupferschiefer Co. at Eisleben, German~.~ It appears, however, that the process never went into commercial operation. Further studies in this direction were carried out by Russian workers.10-23 The International Nickel Co. of Canada erected a pilot plant at Port Colborne in 1951 to apply the process to nickel matte which is essentially pure nickel sulfide."'- 26 Full-scale plant went into operation at the Thompson Refinery in Manitoba in 1964.27 In this method nickel sulfide matte is melted and cast into anodes analyzing 76 pct Ni and 20 pct S with small amounts of copper, cobalt, and iron. These anodes are then electrolyzed in an aqueous solution of NiS04 at pH 4. Further work on this method was reported in the literature.28-31 In this paper, experiments on the anodic dissolution of white metal in aqueous copper sulfate solution are reported. EXPERIMENTAL White metal, Table I, obtained from The Anaconda Co., was cast in form of anodes 10 by 7.5 by 1 cm, Fig. 1. The anodes are mechanically strong and do not break easily; when polished they gave a shiny gray metallic appearance. From the chemical composition shown in Table I, it can be seen that the atomic ratio Cu:S corresponds approximately to the formula CU2.06S. The copper in excess to the formula Cu2S is most probably present as a separate phase since metallic copper could be seen under the microscope, Fig. 2. Fig. 3 shows the X-ray diffraction pattern of white metal which matches fairly well with that of reagent-grade Cu2S.

This paper presents a general re-view of the various methods of briquetting coals, with and without the aid of a binder, with special reference to the production of a suitable briquette from Nova Scotia 'fines' for re-blending with industrial coal. From the economic and technical viewpoints, either small stoker-sized briquettes made with about 4 per cent asphalt in standard low-pressure double-roll presses, or briquettes made without binder in high-pressure double-roll presses, appear to be the most reasonable solution at present.

Barras trefiladas podem não apresentar o perfil desejado pelos seus fabricantes após o processo de produção, por isso, este trabalho tem por objetivo avaliar diferentes geometrias de ferramentas, mais precisamente, o ângulo de entrada e região de calibração (Hc) da mesma. Para modelamento numérico do processo, foi utilizado o software DeformTM, que possibilitou este estudo, com simulações da influência da ferramenta no perfil de tensões residuais dos produtos (barras de aço AISI1045). Foram analisados os diferentes comportamentos do material para processos com fieiras de ângulos de 15° e 20°, com foco nas variações de tensões residuais visando investigar o produto final da trefilação. Em uma das principais comparações entre as fieiras anteriormente mencionadas, observou-se uma diferença de tensões residuais de aproximadamente 206MPa no centro das barras trefiladas, resultado que somado a distribuições assimétricas de tensões em relação ao ponto central de determinado corte da barra, podem ocasionar o seu empenamento.

WITH the advent of nodular iron as an engineering material, considerable interest has been shown in developing this material for various applications. Generally the strength, hardness, or ductility are the more common properties used for design purposes but occasionally applications involving a knowledge of the thermal conductivity of the material is required. A search of the literature showed, rather surprisingly, that relatively little work has been done on this property for all types of cast iron. Insufficient data are available on thermal and electrical conductivities to develop the Weidemann-Franz ratio, or the Lorentz relationship, for estimation purposes. There are no data on nodular irons and the published data on malleable irons are quite sketchy. For these reasons the conductivity of the group of nodular irons listed in Table I were measured. Irons I to IV were made in such a fashion as to maintain the carbon and alloy content essentially the same while varying the silicon content. Test specimens were cut from the mid-section of 4-in. keel castings. Iron V is a commercial casting of nodular iron. The test specimen of this iron was cut from the center of a large cast billet 3x10x26 in. All alloys were tested in the as-cast condition. A microstructural examination showed that each iron had spheroidal graphite but the size and distribution varied with the silicon content of the iron. The spheroid size decreased while the number of graphite nodules increased as the silicon content of the iron was increased. The matrix structures of each iron consisted of pearlite and ferrite with the proportions varying from predominantly pearlite in the low-silicon iron to mostly ferrite in the high-silicon iron. The commercial heat, iron V, was predominantly pearlite probably because of its higher manganese and phosphorus content. Two methods for measuring the thermal conductivity were used. The first was a modification of the techniques described by Powell and Hickman and Van Dusen and Shelton,² the second method was a simpler technique described by Jakob and Hawkins." Since the agreement of both methods as tested on two sets of duplicate samples was excellent, the simpler experimental technique was used. The results of the measurements are given in Table II along with a summary of the microstructural constituents. These conductivity data indicate that as the percentage of silicon increases there is a corresponding decrease in the thermal conductivity even though the structure is changing from pearlitic to ferritic. Such a change in microstructure is usually accompanied by an increase in conductivity. A third factor involved in the behavior of these irons is the size and distribution of the graphite nodules. The relative amounts of graphite do not change greatly but the size and distribution do. Generally graphite improves the conductivity but in the present case such an effect is probably masked by the alloying effect from the silicon and its dispersion through the matrix. The thermal conductivity of the nodular irons studied is less than that of regular foundry irons by some 10 to 30 pct and is less than that of regular malleable irons.' The cause of the decreased conductivity is probably the more highly alloyed fer-rites obtained in these irons and the changed mode of distribution of the graphite as compared to the regular foundry irons.
