The segregation process has been known for many years and applied industrially for the treatment of various refractory copper ores. The principles of the process are briefly reviewed; the process was tested in the laboratory on two copper-cobalt oxide ores from Gecamines, Shaba Province, Zaire. Various parameters of the process, such as segregation temperature, dosage of reducing and chloridizing agents and flotation conditions were inyestigated. Experimental results have shown that the segregation of copper could proceed satisfactorily at low temperature (1000° K) but that of cobalt required higher temperature and higher additions of reducing and chloridizing agents.

The Red Dog massive sulfide deposit is located in the western Brooks Range of Alaska 100 miles north of the village of Kotzebue. It contains the largest zinc reserve in the world. Reserves were doubled in 1995 with the discovery of the Aqqaluk deposit and significantly increased in 1996, with the discovery of a deep zone of mineralization to the north. At present the global reserve and resource is 143 million tonnes of 16.1 % zinc and 4.3% lead. Red Dog is a silica + sulfide synsedimentary replacement deposit hosted in barite and black shale of the Mississippian Kuna Formation. Red Dog was thrust northward during the late Mesozoic Brookian orogeny. Understanding the setting of the deposit at the time of formation and its subsequent deformation history is critical to current exploration efforts and to future discoveries in the district.

Kelsey Lake kimberlites are a cluster of eight diamondiferous pipes that occur in the northern State Line kimber lite district of the Colorado-Wyo¬ming diamond province (Coopersmith 1991, 1993) (Fig. 1). This is located at the southern margin of the Wyoming Archean province. Two relatively large pipes and a few smaller bodies define the cluster (Fig. 2). The Kelsey Lake kimberlite cluster has been developed as the first diamond mine in the United States. The cluster was discovered in 1987. Full-scale production began in the spring of 1996. Mining has produced gem-quality diamonds up to 28.3 carats in size. The 30 State Line kimberlites, intruded about 390 million years ago into Proterozoic crystalline rocks, were presumed to be underlain by Archean basement of the Wyoming Province. Nearly all the kimberlite pipes contain diamond but only the Kelsey Lake pipes are economic. The Kelsey Lake kimberlites contain predominately diatreme facies kimberlite, with minor hypabyssal and crater facies rocks locally occurring. Alteration and weathering of the kimberlites is extensive. Petrologic studies indicated an underlying lithosphere that has a largely Proterozoic signature and shows evidence of deep melt and metasomatic events. Current development has concentrated on the two largest pipes. These have been bulk-sampled after geological study (1987) identified the presence of small diamonds and mineral chemistry indicating favorable diamond conditions. A 10-t/hr (11-stph) rotary pan plant was established in 1992 to process thousands of tons of bulk-sample material. Grades and gem-quality diamonds to 14.2 carats in size were recovered. Early in 1995, it was decided to move from evaluation to commercial mining. Production began in early 1996. A 195-t/hr (215-stph) rotary pan plant was built. A water supply system and tailings disposal have also been incorporated. The project straddles the Colorado/Wyoming border. Existing mining permits were amended to incorporate the increased scale and new plant facility. The permits for this project included the following: Colorado mining permit, Wyoming dozing permit, Corps of Engineers Section 404, Colorado NPDES, Wyoming NPDES, Storm water Management Plan, Air Pollution Emission Notice, various Colorado and Wyoming State Engineer and well permits, Substitute Water Sup¬ply Plan, Larimer County Special Use Review, and US Forest Service road use permits. The temporary destruction of a wetlands area was a sensitive issue. It has been addressed through the Clean Water Act Section 404 permit administered by the US Corps of Engineers. This use will be mitigated by creating new, self-sustaining wetlands in the immediate drainage system. A comprehensive and bonded reclamation plan is incorporated in the permits. Diamond mining and ore processing is environmentally benign. No chemicals are used in processing the diamonds. The plant is a water wash facility. The kimberlite ore is inert, as is the granite wall rock. The exposure of the ore body and the subsequent ore processing and waste rock and tailings containments pose no threat of release, leaching or dispersion of any detrimental elements. There is no acid-forming waste. Even a prolonged acid rain environment will not produce a harmful leachate. Slimes containment and clarification ponds will prevent unacceptable levels of suspended solids in water discharge. Hydrocyclones and other dynamic separators are normally fed with pulps of water and solid particles. The particles have different sizes, shapes and densities and, except in the special case of mono-characteristic particles, are segregated into size, shape and density. Segregation is magnified by the high values of centrifugal acceleration in the hydrocyclones. This paper develops the theory of the segregation, indicates the major variables involved and reports experimental data of segregation under different operating conditions for mixtures of magnetite and/or ferrosilicon and non-magnetic minerals.

The problems of the domestic merchant fluorspar producers are more or less common with those of many other producers of metallic and non-metallic minerals. For more than ten years the American fluorspar producers have seen an ever lowering price in the market-place for the fluorspar product, while their labor and material costs-continue to mount steadily. This cost-price squeeze has forced out of business all but a few of the merchant producers, and only two captive producers continue to operate, and one of them has announced early curtailment. The prices of domestic fluorspar, of all grades, have declined because of the competition from cheaper foreign imports, principally from Mexico, Spain and Italy. Tariff protection on fluorspar, particularly on the highest or acid grade, has never been sufficient to cover the production cost differential between foreign and domestic fluorspars. Low ocean and barge freight rates have also contributed to the barring of the product of domestic mines from, the major consuming centers along the Gulf and East Coast. Because of the freight disadvantage, all but one or two fluorspar producers in the western states have had to suspend business. More than 80% of the domestic fluorspar is being produced in Illinois and Kentucky fluorspar districts which adjoin on both sides of the Ohio River.

The term kaolin is used here, in a commercial sense, for near- white clay deposits which are dominantly comprised of the mineral kaolinite, or for products refined from such deposits. The term "china clay" has been used in the past as a synonym for kaolin, a reference to its first being mined some 3000 years ago at a hill near Jauchau Fu, Jiangxi Province, China as a porcelain raw material. The name kaolin was derived from the Chinese Kauling, which means high ridge. For most modem industrial applications kaolin must be extensively refined and processed from the crude state to enhance whiteness, purity, and other important commercial characteristics. After such processing, kaolin ranks as one of the most valuable of industrial clays, and it is used to some extent in most manufactured consumer products. In 1991, the United States alone produced kaolin valued at $1,072,366,000. It is applied very widely as a pigment, filler, coater, extender, ceramic raw material, catalyst base, electrical insulator, and pharmaceutical. Some more prominent uses include paper filling and coating; paint, plastic, adhesive, and ink pigment; rubber reinforcing agent; ceramic raw material for porcelain, dinnerware, tile, and enamels; catalyst base for petroleum cracking and auto exhaust emission catalytic control devices; cosmetics base; and digestive coating remedy. Those properties of kaolin clay which make it suited to these applications are related to its physical, optical, mineralogical, and chemical nature.

INTRODUCTION This manuscript is based on site inspections of five existing mines and the detailed analysis of two of the five. The detailed analysis and mathematical models of the two mines are presented herein in order to demonstrate a method of predicting mine water inflow using existing mines as a data base. Water management procedures were studied at all mines. Our original criteria for mine selection were that the mines be less than five years old and have an inflow rate in excess of 2000 gpm (7.6 m3/min). Background hydrologic and hydrogeologic data were required so that two of the mines could be used for our computer modeling experiments. Our original criteria proved to be difficult to meet. We contacted numerous mines via various sources. Many mines were unable to meet the cri¬teria stated or were not interested in cooperating with us. Therefore, we allowed some flexibility in the application of these criteria to satisfy our orig¬inal requirements. Although the visitations at all the mines are not discussed herein the characteristics of the two mines simulated are presented. These simulated mines consist of a uranium mine in New Mexico and a lead mine in Missouri. The mines and owners will remain anonymous by request. URANIUM MINE-CASE HISTORY NUMBER 1 Mine Location The uranium mine that we simulated is located in northwestern New Mexico. The ground surface at the uranium mine is at an elevation of approx¬imately 7000 ft (2134 m) above mean sea level. The climate is arid to semi-arid with an average annual precipitation of approximately 10 in. (25.4 cm) (John and West, 1963). Geologic Setting It is essential that a conceptual model of the stratigraphy, hydrostratigraphy, and structural geology of a mine site be developed prior to simulation by a mathematical model. If such a conceptual model is not developed prior to simulation major errors are difficult to avoid. The uranium mine we have simulated is located in the San Juan Basin (Fig. 68), which is a structural basin located in northwestern New Mexico and adjacent parts of Colorado, Arizona, and Utah. The sedimentary rocks present in the deepest part of the basin are nearly 15,000 ft (4572 m) thick (John and West, 1963). The regional dip of the sedimen¬tary rocks in the Grants area is generally northward toward the San Juan Basin; the regional attitude is modified locally by normal faults and folds (Hilbert, 1963). The rocks of interest in this area are sedimentary in origin and range in age from Penn¬sylvanian to Cretaceous. They rest on the Precam¬brian core of the Zuni Uplift. Associated intrusive and extrusive rocks are of Tertiary and Quaternary ages (Hilbert, 1963). The deepest sedimentary unit of interest at this mine site is the Morrison Formation as described by Hilbert (1963). The Morrison Formation con¬sists of three members in the general area of the mine site; the deepest member is the Recapture. The Recapture Member consists of alternating beds of gray sandstone and grayish red siltstone or mud¬stone with strata up to several feet in thickness. Only a few small deposits of uranium are contained within the Recapture Member. The Westwater Canyon Member overlies the Recapture Member of the Morrison Formation. The Westwater Can¬yon Member is approximately 150 ft (46 m) thick and consists of light brown to gray, poorly sorted, arkosic sandstone, and some interbedded gray mud¬stone. The Poison Canyon Formation denoted in subsequent discussions, tables, and figures was de¬termined to be a part of the Westwater Canyon Member. The separate connotation is used for the description of mining operations and hydraulic properties but a separate physical description is not included. Jade is a commercial term encompassing green, white, black or yellow-brown jadeitite and nephrite. Jadeitite consists of Na-rich pyroxene, whereas nephrite consists of prismatic to acicular amphiboles of the tremolite-actinolite series forming bundles that are randomly oriented and interlocked. Nephrite is tougher (harder to break) than jadeitite. Its fracture strength is about 200 MN/m2 whereas that of jadeitite is about 100 MN/m2. On the other hand, jadeitite has a higher hardness (7 compared to 6.5 on the Mohs scale). There are over fifty known nephrite occurrences in British Columbia (B.C.). These occurrences consist of individual blocks, boulder fields, talus blocks and in situ occurrences. Most of the in situ occurrences are lens or cigar shaped. They occur at, or near the contact of ultramafic/mafic rocks (mainly serpentinites) with cherts, and other metasedimentary or igneous felsic rocks of Mississippian to Jurassic oceanic terranes such as Cache Creek and Slide Mountain. These contacts are commonly interpreted as shear/fault related. In general, it is believed that the B.C. nephrite formed by metasomatic exchange between ultramafic and silica-bearing rocks. Impurities in B.C. nephrite are spinel group minerals (chromite, magnetite, picolite), diopside, uvarovite, titanite, chlorite, and talc. Jadeitite is slightly denser than nephrite and good quality material sinks in methyl iodine. There are no known jadeitite occurrences of economic interest in B.C., but there are at least four geographic areas where favorable lithologies, and metamorphic conditions (Pn) required for the formation of jadeitite coincide. These are Bridge River, Pinchi Lake, Dease Lake, and Jennings River. These areas are known to contain small concentrations of jadeite, or are characterized by blueschist or eclogite-grade metamorphic conditions. Rhodonite and pyroxmangite are MnSi03 polymorphs. These minerals are pyroxenoids and are macroscopically and microscopically very similar. For brevity, both are grouped together under the term "rhodonite". Most of the B.C. occurrences are hosted by late Paleozoic chert sequences and are lens shaped and concordant. The common association of rhodonite with iron formations, jasperoids, and/or volcanogenic sulphide deposits in southwestern B.C. permits the delineation of favorable horizons using magnetic or electro-magnetic geophysical methods. Geographic associations between manganese showings and sulphide deposits, and the hydrothermal chemical signature of the rhodonite occurrences from this area, suggest a genetic link between rhodonite and volcanogenic sulphide deposits. The typical rhodonite rocks consist of rhodonite, pyroxmangite, neotocite, black amorphous Mn-oxides, Mn-bearing garnet, ± epidote, ±chlorite, ±rhodochrosite, ± parakutnah-orite, ± Mn-bearing calcite, ± iron oxides and hydroxides. Garnet ± epidote forms yellow patches and layers within the rhodonite. Within some of the rhodonite occurrences, the garnet is altered to chlorite. Rhodonite-bearing rock is commonly cross cut by secondary manganese oxide veins, creating a characteristic web-like texture. In several localities, the contorted bedding planes are readily recognized. Mn-calcite and quartz also crosscut rhodonite. Rhodonite deposits hosted by high grade metamorphic rocks may contain pyroxmangite. Rhodonite is an important gemstone and ornamental stone in B.C., second only to nephrite in dollar value. B.C. nephrite and rhodonite have been used for the past 100 years in local jewelry and ornamental applications. More recently they have been used in table tops, and they have potential as upscale materials in tile-making. There may be a market for tiles made from lower grade materials that were previously extracted and stockpiled. The prices of nephrite, jadeitite, and rhodonite vary widely with quality, but gem and ornamental grade stones are relatively highly priced materials and they trade world-wide.

Throughout the history of mankind, the principal use of coal has been to produce heat through combustion. The heat is used in many ways: to warm air space for our comfort; to provide heat or energy to power industrial processes, such as cement and steel production; and to produce electricity. Because it is our nation's most abundant fossil energy fuel, coal in the late 20th century is on the threshold of becoming a significant source for synthetic liquids and gas energy fuels for this country. This is made possible by conversion processes which can change solid coal into various synthetic gases and liquids. These coal-derived fuels are nearly identical to the processed fuels and chemicals provided by natural gas and crude oils, which presently provide almost all the petrochemical feedstocks and energy fuels needed for the residential, light commercial, and transportation markets. A revolution is beginning to take place, not only in the United States, but in many other countries with a return to a coal-based energy economy. Also, new combustion and conversion technologies which are compatible with national health and environmental goals are rapidly emerging. These technologies will allow coal's use to be expanded not only in its traditional markets, but also to supply markets held by natural gas and crude oil. With the worldwide decline in natural gas and crude oil reserves, coal is being-looked upon to meet the energy demand. Because of these new coal conversion technologies, coal will no longer be only a combustion fuel, but a valuable raw material for production of a variety of clean fuels and chemicals.

INTRODUCTION Coal is geologically a sedimentary rock with distinct bedding planes containing a mixture of petrographic constituents. Yet. because of its chemical nature, it also has some of the characteristics of a polymeric material. In addition, it is extensively precracked to give a macropore structure and also has a substantial internal volume of microporosity. Add to this the mineral constituents dispersed in the coal in a variety of forms and sizes. and it can be readily appreciated that coal is a complex and heterogeneous material. It has to date not been possible to predict the particle size distributions produced by breakage of coals from a priori application of the principles of fracture mechanics. However, there is a substantial body of data resulting from empirical observation of size distributions produced under various conditions, primarily from grinding mills. It is the function of this review to outline how this empirical information can be used to predict product size distributions for those systems which have been studied systematically, and to suggest future avenues of research using similar methodology. FRACTURE THEORY APPLIED TO COAL It is, of course, possible to devise experiments for slow crack propagation in a coal. However, the evidence is that coal breaks by brittle fracture in the mills and mining machines of industrial importance and therefore the theory of brittle fracture is sufficient to illustrate the important features of the fracture of coal. In order to produce size reduction a solid must be stressed by the application of force. The force can be a tensile (stretching), compressive, or shear force, and the three dimensional stress pattern in the solid represents the tensile, compressive, and shear forces per unit area acting in any direction through any point in the solid. As an illustration consider the case of a simple one-dimensional tensile stress: then stress is defined as a=F/A where F is the force. A is the cross-sectional area of the solid normal to F and strain. E, is defined as the fractional change in the length of the solid. so that E= x/L where x is the extension of an original length of L. Coal behaves as an elastic material over short times (although viscoelastic creep can occur if the stress is maintained over long times) and if it is not stretched too far the coal returns to its original shape when the stress is removed; otherwise catastrophic failure occurs and the coal fractures at a stress termed the tensile strength. The failure under stress of an elastic material is termed brittle fracture. Elastic material fails at small stain and the stress-stain relation to where brittle fracture occurs is the empirical Hooke's law. a= YE, where Y is Young's modulus. The work done on the solid to take the solid from zero external stress to a stressed state by slowly increasing F up to a final stress u is the integral of the stress times the strain. This reversible strain energy is stored in the solid and. using Hooke's law. is u /2Y per unit volume of solid. If the solid is immediately loaded to u the work done is [EAuL] which Is a2 /Y per unit volume, that is, twice the reversible work.

The Moon Creek Reclamation Project provides a case study in the development of creative cleanup solutions for an abandoned lead and zinc mine and mill site located in northern Idaho. Innovative design features include construction of a 88,000 cubic yard combined waste containment facility on soft in-situ tailings, water-balance cap, limestone gravel drains, a geocell mattress for stability, and a below-grade scour protection berm. The stream, including a wetlands buffer, will be relocated within an existing road alignment and rehabilitated to provide trout habitat. These elements allow for the integration of reclamation and stabilization measures into an effective site design.

This investigation has concentrated on optimizing the newly developed Pansep linear screen and developing empirical models to predict the screening performance. Most empirical models developed in the past to predict the performance for industrial screens are suitable for the vibratory screens. Understandably, these models are deficient in predicting the performance of linear screens due to the difference in their operating principle. Thus, the main objective of this study has been to develop empirical models suitable for linear screens to predict the partition coefficient for a given size fraction as a function of the aperture size. The inadequacy of the conventional model equation originally developed for vibratory screen has been demonstrated and a modified equation developed to predict the partition coefficient as a function of the normalized mean particle size (d/d50c). In addition, new model equations have been developed for linear screens to predict the screening efficiency as a function of the separation size(d50) and to predict the separation size as a function of the screen aperture. It is believed that these model equations will be useful for the plant operators in selecting the mesh panels of correct aperture size and in predicting the product size distribution based on the selected aperture size.

Roof falls are one of the greatest hazards in underground coal mines worldwide. Due to stringent safety measures and extensive support system development, roof falls have been reduced significantly but they still persist in many underground coal mines. Some of the roof falls initiate with cutter roof or guttering. In the past, many factors have been identified as being responsible for the development of cutters and roof fall. These responsible factors can be broadly classified as stress related or non-stress related. In this paper the finer details of mining technique have been taken into consideration for better understanding of cutter roof and roof fall problems. Three dimensional finite difference modeling has been used to explain the mechanism of cutter development. Strain softening material behavior has been used to realistically simulate the cutter formation, and common cutting sequences as implemented in the field have been simulated. This was done with an objective to determine whether the cutting sequence has really any significant control over cutter formation or not. In addition to cutting sequences, the effect of cut length is also studied. The effect of step cutting and turning of crosscut into and away from major and minor horizontal stresses is also examined to see its influence on cutter development.

The mining business has numerous risks: equipment availability, labor disruptions, foreign exchange rate, etc., but one of the more important risks is assessing the geology. Improving the “intelligence” of geology can and will have significant positive effect on reducing mining risk and thus enhancing operational and financial performance. The use of the advanced Radio Imaging Method (RIM-IV) on coal seams and ore bodies can create useful two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) high-resolution images that provide mining engineers with additional intelligence to better plan and improve operations. Improved operational performance will reduce costs and enable mining companies to meet market and financial commitments. For the past decade the underground coal mining industry has been moving toward “super panels” in long-wall mining, and “super sections” for room-and-pillar mining. These mining conventions employ wider faces, longer gate roads, greater room-and-pillar density, and an increased scale in the amount and complexity of mining equipment. An obvious economy of scale exists: amortization of setup investments over greater volume of coal enables mine management to reduce fixed cost per ton. Restricted by equipment considerations, face widths have currently reached about 1,100 ft. Wider longwall panels are planned, with 1,400-ft widths, but this requires an incremental step in hardware that the original equipment manufacturers will soon bring to market. However, longwall panel length has not yet reached its limits, with some panels planned up to 25,000 ft. While longwall panel length is generally dictated by reserve size and extent, practical restrictions in mine planning also include seam thickness, ventilation requirements, or restrictions involving methane drainage. Super panels have certainly enabled the industry to keep pushing the limits of productivity improvement. However, important considerations in mine planning, now and especially in the future, will be driven in large part by geological factors. While larger developments improve productivity and capture economies of scale, the fact that super panels can contain at least four times the area or coal volume means that the probability of encountering serious anomalies is at least four times greater than with the “conventional” panels. Given the increased probability of encountering anomalies, improved assessment of geology is important for super panels and super sections. Proper due diligence requires a thorough and competent evaluation of a mining property and its ore reserve. Using improved geostatistical techniques is most important, and improving the base data for the analysis is equally important. The old cliché “garbage in, garbage out” certainly applies. Also, the quality of coal reserves is (or has been) declining, so, in the future, mining will be in deeper and most likely thinner seams—and these seams appear to contain greater anomalies that threaten efficient operations. To counter the impact of reserve deterioration, the industry is moving toward greater use of geophysical tools and services. Fortunately, tools such as the Radio Imaging Method™ (RIM-IV) system have been improved and can provide the industry with enhanced 2-D and 3-D images of coal seams and ore bodies. To identify and profile the best areas of a coal reserve, geologists, engineers, and mine managers need greater intelligence in the form of RIM-IV tomographic maps of longwall panels and room-and-pillar sections. These images have enhanced the understanding of in-seam features, which in turn has improved operational plans and performance.

In 1900, placer gold was discovered on the beach of Nome, AK on the southern coastline of Alaska's Seward Peninsula (Garnett, 1991). The site is about 800 km (500 miles) from Anchorage. Nome is connected to Anchorage only by air (daily) and by sea (summer). Total onshore placer gold production from Nome's immediate vicinity was more than 155.5 t (5 million oz). Alaska Gold Co, has continued to produce gold onshore with, until recently, two bucketladder dredges, each of 255-L (9-cu ft) bucket capacity. Small-scale marine dredging for gold has been at- tempted several times this century (Garnett, 1991). Western Gold Exploration and Mining Co. Ltd. Partnership (WestGold) is the only company to have been successful in achieving a significant offshore production. The Nome bucketladder-dredging operation from 1986 to 1990 constituted a unique marine-mining experience in the United States. \Inspiration Gold Inc., WestGold's predecessor, acquired six offshore leases in 1985. The total lease area of 87 km2 (21,551 acres) extended from the coastline to the 4.8-km (3-mile) offshore limit (Fig. 1). Those leases al- ready had been partially explored. Drilling was conducted off the shorefast winter sea ice. Therefore, it was rarely more than 1.6 km (1 mile) from the shore or in water deeper than about 9 m (30 ft). In 1985, estimated reserves comprised of a 5-m (17-ft) vertical thickness of sediments below 6.3 m (20 ft) of water. This meant a mean digging depth below the mean sea level (msl) of 11.3 m (37 ft). It was thought that the offshore Nome deposit possessed a feature that is common with many terrestrial gold placers - the secret of profitable exploitation of the marine deposit lay in maximizing the dredge throughput to minimize the unit costs. The inability of the project to withstand the prohibitively high cost of a new dredge was recognized. So Inspiration Gold purchased a used unit. This was the world's largest ocean- going bucketladder dredge (Fig. 2). Binzn was an 850-L (30 cu ft) bucket capacity dredge that was lying idle in Singapore. Originally constructed in the Jurong shipyard of Singapore in 1979, Bima was designed by Mining and Transport Engineering, a subsidiary of IHC Holland. Billiton Marine used the dredge for tin production at Pulau Tujuh in Indonesia (Dieperink, 1978) before it was laid up in mid-1985. Bima underwent a nine-week refit before departing Singapore on June 4,1986, with 800-t (880-st ) of deck cargo. It was dry-towed for 32 days to Alaska. A slower, less expensive, wet-tow at the authorized 5.5 kmthr (3 knots/hour) would have delayed the dredge's arrival in Alaska untl almost the onset of winter. The 13,000-km (8,100-mile) voyage was made on the deck of Smit Lloyd's "Giant-4" submersible barge towed by its 7.8- MW (10,500-hp) tugboat. The first season's dredging revealed several major shortcomings in Bima. Further repairs and modifications were undertaken at Tacoma, WA. The dredge returned to Nome for the June start of the 1987 summer dredging season. The refitted Bima worked offshore at Nome from 1987 to 1990. It produced 3.67 t (118,078 oz) of gold at an average recovered grade of 824 mg/m3 (0.0204 oz/cu yd). In 1991, the dredge was dismantled and sold.

Grouting has been used in underground mining for more than twenty years. Chemical grouting is often used as a remedial measure when the implemented ground control program is unable to completely prevent structural failures or when there is a need for preventing a structural member from unraveling. Utilization of the polyurethane grout currently being used is restricted by its limited range of physical and mechanical properties that restrict its utilization. To overcome some of the drawbacks of polyurethane, research has been conducted on a newly developed polyester based grout. The polyester resin, identified by Sandvik as StrataGrip, provides a number of features, including variable gel times and much reduced chemical hazard. Equally important are the mechanical properties of the product. The strength and deformability of any chemical grout must be compatible with the intended purpose of grouting and the expected deformation of the rock that is to be grouted. Assessment of the mechanical properties of polyester grout is the focus of this work. Field experiences and laboratory research have defined the properties of an effective grouting material. Experimental results indicate that the polyester grout meets or exceeds the recommended properties for many injection applications. Furthermore, the results suggest that the ability to adjust mechanical properties via resin formulation has the potential to expand the applicability of chemical grouting in ground control.

After two disappointing years where most industrial minerals posted decreasing production, 1981 saw an increase in production over 1980, or at least in status quo. Several commodities did, however, post significant gains. For example, bromine posted a 14% increase; fluorspar production dropped 21% in 1980, but gained 24% in 1981; and sulfur production increased. However, perlite was off 13% and manufactured sodium sulfate off 18% in 1981, while natural sodium sulfate production remained almost even with 1980. In fact, many industrial minerals production either remained constant, increased, or decreased only slightly over 1980. Increasing energy costs had their impact on industrial minerals in 1981. Hopefully, the recent downward trend in energy costs, at least gasoline, will financially help some of the more marginal plants. The 1979 shortage of rail cars that did not carry through 1980 also did not carry through in 1981. Rail rates increased 12.8% over-all last year, while average freight rates for industrial minerals increased 15.5%, according to Neil Johnson, consultant. Also, the trucking industry posted a 5-6% decrease in rates due to deregulation. All in all, we in the industrial minerals section seem to be holding our own at least. Stanley J. INTRODUCTION Technologic progress depends on new and innovative ideas, the practical application of these ideas, and finally as the technology is developed and demonstrated, the engineering improvement or replacement of existing capabilities. In many areas the new ideas, although known, are not immediately put to practical use in all applicable fields. Good technologic forecasting for research and development within the excavation field coupled with adequate technology transfer is necessary to ensure timely application of innovative ideas to remove bottlenecks in the total system. The purposes of this paper are (1) to show the potential ability of technologic forecasting to meet future demands in rapid excavation through the acceleration of excavation rates by research and development in several related technologic fields, (2) to provide a brief review of the initial development of the ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency) Rock Mechanics and Rapid Excavation Program, (3) to draw attention to the research projects completed or underway in the FY 1970-1972 ARPA program and explain where information or program results can be obtained, (4) to summarize the progress and accomplishments of applied research contracts in the rock disintegration element of the ARPA program, and (5) to discuss the research directions planned for the remaining years of the program. One of the primary interests of the United States Department of Energy's Mine Planning Division is to fully develop avenues of technical research which potentially offer positive effects on coal mine productivity. One such area of research involves the removal of methane gas from unmined portions of coalbeds through vertical wells drilled from surface locations. As coalbed methane content is reduced, less gas is available for flow into the mine, and consequently ventilation requirements are decreased and/or coal extraction rates increase. Another attractive aspect of the vertical borehole drainage method is that it presents an opportunity to recover and utilize significant quantities of methane gas, which would otherwise be wasted to the atmosphere. The viability of removing gas from the Mary Lee coalbed using stimulated vertical boreholes was first suggested by Elder and Deul as a result of a United States Bureau of Mines' drilling project conducted from 1971 to 1974 (4). Other United States Bureau of Mines' studies forecasted that degasification would eventually be necessary in the Mary Lee coalbed because most new or expanding mine development would take place at depths exceeding 1 000 feet (305 meters), where the methane problem would be severe (3) (13). In 1975 a large-scaled drilling program was designed in order to supply industry's anticipated need for a degasification technology in the Warrior coal basin, Alabama. The results of this government/industry sponsored effort were to be specifically applicable to the Mary Lee coalbed, the most extensive and economically important deep minable coal present in the area. Major technical objectives of this program are twofold: (1) to measure the effects of various well completion designs, particularly hydraulic stimulation, on mining and (2) to determine the effects of well spacing on gas drainage rates. A cooperative agreement was established with United States Steel Corporation in late 1975 and field work began shortly thereafter in the proximity of a newly developing mine near Oak Grove, Alabama. Government responsibility for this program was transferred from the United States Bureau of Mines to the United States Department of Energy in October 1977. To date, as a result of this program, twenty-one wells have been completed into the Mary Lee coalbed at the Oak Grove site. Seventeen of these wells were drilled on an experimental grid pattern located two miles from the active mine. These grid wells are primarily being used to generate data necessary to determine the effects of well spacing on gas drainage rates and will also provide a large amount of information regarding the long-term effects of degasification on mining. The four remaining wells (designated Ton through TW4) were placed near the mine so that the full effects of completion could be studied within the short time required for underground interception. Results gathered from the first two test wells (TW1 and TW2) have been reported in detail (10) and indicated that several improvements were necessary to increase gas drainage rates. Hydraulic stimulation was one of the most important aspects of well design that required improvement. Nitrogen-charged foam stimulation treatment was used at TW3 and TW4 instead of the gelled-fluid type stimulation used at the first two near-mine test wells.

Transitions between geological/geotechnical soil units have a critical impact on the operation and performance of a tunnel boring machine (TBM). Geostatistics-based probabilistic modeling is used to quantify the uncertainty in soil transition locations. This paper presents two unique soft-ground tunneling case studies where the results from the geostatistics-based probabilistic modeling are compared to the TBM data and as-encountered ground conditions derived from the actual TBM data. The assessment enhances the confidence in using geostatistics to improve ground awareness for efficient tunnel construction, minimizing different site condition (DSC) claims, and improving decision-making on tunnel projects.
