The U1h Shaft Project is a design/build subcontract to construct one 6.1 meter(m) (20 feet [ft.]) finished diameter shaft to a depth of 321.6 meters (m) (1055 ft.) at the Nevada Test Site (NTS). Atkinson Construction was subcontracted by Bechtel Nevada(BN) to construct the U1h Shaft for the Department of Energy (DOE). The project consists of furnishing and installing the sinking plant, construction of the 321.6 m(1055 ft.) of concrete lined shaft, development of a shaft station at a depth of 297.5 m(976 ft.), and construction of a loading pocket at the station. The outfitting of the shaft and installation of a new hoist may be incorporated into the project at a later date. This paper will describe the design phase, the excavation and lining operation, shaft station construction and the contractual challenges encountered on this project.

Antamina is a large open-pit copper and zinc mine located within the Central Andes of Northern Peru at an altitude of 4300 masl. The facilities are situated within the headwaters of several watersheds, within the Amazon basin. Nearby villages rely heavily on springs and streams for drinking and irrigation water. The principle source of baseflow during the dry season is from Cretaceous karstic limestone aquifers. Antamina will produce nearly 1.4 billion tonnes of waste rock over its mine life. Finding suitable sites for storing large volumes of waste rock is often a challenging task – especially in karstic, alpine terrain. Detailed hydrogeological investigations are essential for delineating the karstic hydrogeologic watersheds associated with the proposed waste facilities, which are often very different than topographic (hydrologic) watersheds. Contamination vulnerability mapping at Antamina consisted of geological and karst mapping, geophysical surveys, geochemical testing, dye-tracer studies, drilling and aquifer testing. Detailed mapping followed by dye-tracer studies proved to be the most cost-effective methods for characterizing the karst aquifer systems. The results were used to optimize waste rock management at the site to minimize potential impacts on groundwater resources.

In ball milling the rates of breakage vary primarily with the size distribution of powder in the mill. In wet grinding viscosity of the slurry varies continually as size distribution changes and hence the breakage rates change. In this study a simpler estimation scheme is used to determine breakage rates in batch grinding. Using an approximate solution to the batch grinding equation, acceleration and deceleration of breakage rates of all individual size classes is determined when the grinding environment is varied. Experimental results with limestone and copper ore show time-dependent breakage rates under both dry and wet grinding conditions. In general the breakage rates increase for coarse sizes and decrease for fine sizes with increase in the fines present in the mill. Such variations have strong implications in closed-circuit grinding.

Iron, cobalt, and nickel in waste ferric chloride solutions were separated from each other by solvent extraction. The iron was extracted from the cobalt and nickel by the use of methyl isobutyl ketone, and then the cobalt was separated from the nickel by the use of a high-molecular-weight quaternary amine dissolved in a solvent of high aromatic content.

Viewed abstractly, a mill may be defined as a mineral processing facility located somewhere between the mine and the tailings storage area, Just how mining operations and the demands of tailings storage affect mill design is, the subject of this paper. At the outset, it will be readily acknowledged that no two installations can, or ever will be the same. At one extreme is the bucket line dredge where the distance between the ?mine? and the tailings area is measured in terms of tens of feet. At the other extreme, the large open pit copper mines are frequently spread across twenty, miles or so of countryside with the ore moving to the mill, as exemplified by the operations at Bingham Canyon, Ray, or Ruth - the "upstream" counterparts of Garfield, Hayden and McGill. In each of these cases, mill location was largely determined by requirements for tailings storage and/or water supply.

The separation of minerals such as apatite and scheelite by flotation from other salt-type minerals such as calcite is extremely complex owing to the close similarity between their physicochemical properties. In this paper, properties relevant to flotation such as crystal structure, solubility, surface charge and adsorption behavior of important salt-type minerals are examined along with the role of inorganic modifying agents such as silicates and polyphosphates and organic modifying agents such as starch and tannin. Flotation characteristics of these minerals are then reviewed and selected separation problems involving salt-type minerals are discussed.

INTRODUCTION From the first historical records of the discovery of uranium as an element and the attempted classification of its minerals in the early 18th century-through its first uses in pigmentation and the coloring of glasses and ceramic glazes-until 1939 when it was discovered that the isotope U235, was fissionable, uranium oxide in the form of pitchblende ores and concentrates (produced mainly in Bohemia, Canada, and the former Belgian Congo) in recent times was the source of uranium compounds incidental as byproducts to the recovery of radium from this invariable associated source. In 1938 this byproduct production from pitchblende concentrates was about 471 st of U3O8, with over 90% from Canada and the Belgian Congo and only 25.85 st from carnotite ores in the United States.1 Under the impetus of the Atomic Energy Commission's (AEC now part of the Energy Research Development Administration) domestic and foreign production incentives and buying programs, and as an initial assurance of atomic armament capability of the United States and the Free World, the growth of the uranium mining and milling industry burgeoned from 1952 to 1962. After a short period of decline, in the second decade and in large commitments beyond, it has again extended its capacity to meet ever-increasing fuel demands of atomic power generation by the electric utilities industry. In 1961 the peak production in the United States alone was 17,758 st of U3O8. Peak aggregate domestic and foreign deliveries of 34,581 st of U3O8 to the AEC occurred in 1960.z Canada's maximum delivery of 13,506 st of U308 was made in 1959. These peak and continued productions in the Free World are largely from: the Mesozoic (Jurassic) and Tertiary (Eocene) sandstones in the United States; the quartz pebble conglomerates of Canada and the Witwatersrand; pegmatites, Jurassic limestones, and Precambrian complexes, with less but significant production; the phosphoria, where byproduct production is minor. This uranium production in the form of precipitated concentrates has come from the milling of ores from these sources, both directly and by retreatment of gold cyanidation tailings on the Witwatersrand. Milling of crude ore has followed these processes: conventional crushing and size preparation, ore drying when required, salt roasting for high vanadium ores and byproduct vanadium recovery, carbonate or acid-leaching processes, classification sand-dine separations or countercurrent decantation (CCD) circuits and complete liquid-solids separations, resin-in-pulp (RIP) or liquid-liquid (solvent) ion-ex- change extractions, clarification of pregnant liquors, precipitation, filtration and washing, sodium and vanadium removals, and drying or roasting and packaging of the high-grade, high-purity uranium concentrate commonly referred to as "yellowcake." Coupled with the hazards and control of dust generation incident to conventional crushing and milling operations, more stringent control of airborne respirable and ingestible radioactive particulates and the protection of personnel against definitive external radiation are inherent to uranium milling. Impoundment and control of tailings and other effluents of uranium milling are more restrictive than in conventional practice, be- cause long-term disposal and containment of the uranium series of radionuclides, whether in solution or in solid form, are requisite to uranium milling and are made manadatory under regulatory agencies of government. 2. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY OF URANIUM Early Uses and Byproduct Production of Uranium Uranium was discovered by Klaproth in 1789 but had little commercial importance until the discovery of uranium fission by Hahn and Strassman at the close of 1938. The well-known uranium ores of Joachimsthal, Czechoslovakia, the Congo, and the Colorado Plateau were early sources of radium. Minor quantities of uranium were used for small-scale technical and industrial applications, particularly in coloring glass and ceramics, but most of the uranium was discarded. The Colorado ores were also mined later, chiefly for vanadium. Impetus of Armament Capability and Fuel Demands for Atomic Power Following the discovery of atomic fission, uranium became critically important for military applications and, more recently, as a nuclear fuel. Prior to 1966 uranium was acquired in the United States almost solely for use in the weapons program of the AEC. By 1970 the AEC had procured approximately 325,000 st of U3O8 from domestic and foreign sources. Current and future marketability is primarily dependent upon commercial demand for reactor fuel. This study was undertaken as a part of developing treatment alternatives for waste materials, primarily waste rock and roaster tailings, from sites contaminated with mercury (Hg) mining wastes. Leaching profiles of waste rock over a range of different pH and oxidation-reduction (Eh) conditions were performed. Since iron (Fe) is present in large quantities in mining wastes, the effect of Fe on leaching of Hg was also determined. Results show that the Hg concentration increased as the pH of the suspension increased until a pH value of 10.65. Thereafter, the Hg concentration decreased sharply. The Hg concentration, in presence of Fe decreased significantly (1/10thto 1/100th). Kinetics results show a relatively slow rate of leaching in presence of ferric ions. The results obtained from the present study are being used to predict the fate and stability of Hg present in the environment, and will therefore, be useful in dictating the nature and suitability of any remediation treatment.

INTRODUCTION This paper is one of a series dealing with mining methods and costs, prepared and published under the sponsorship of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) and made possible through the cooperation of many mining companies in the US and foreign countries. The data presented have been obtained from papers previously published by the Bureau dealing with indi¬vidual mines, from the technical press, and from infor¬mation furnished by the mining companies. DEFINITIONS Top Slicing The term top slicing is commonly applied to that method of mining in which the ore is extracted by a series of timbered slices, beginning at the capping; the slice is caved, bringing down the capping to the floor of the slice; the succeeding lower slices are mined up to the overlying mat or gob, consisting of an accumulation of timber from the upper slices and broken capping, which follows the mining progressively downward (Fig. 1). The term has also come to be applied to the mining of ore bodies only one slice thick, by a series of tim¬bered slices one beside the other. The timbers are blasted out, bringing the capping down to the floor, suc¬ceeding slices being driven alongside those already caved (Fig. 2). In USBM classifications of mining methods, top slic¬ing has been placed under the heading caved stopes. The method differs fundamentally, however, from the cav¬ing methods of mining in which the breaking of the ore itself is accomplished by caving action induced by undercutting. In top slicing the ore is broken by the ordinary methods of drilling and blasting, and only the capping is broken up by caving. Main Levels or Haulage Levels Main or haulage levels are the main extraction levels on which the ore is hauled to the shaft. These levels and the shaft constitute the preliminary development of the mine.

Based on many years experience, the well approved Tunnel Seismic Prediction System (TSP) has been substantially enhanced for online geological prognosis in underground construction. The method provides high resolution seismic images of the rock mass ahead of a tunnel face via an array of standard anchor rods. These contain3D-geophones and can routinely be installed during the excavation process. A further outstanding feature of the system is the newly developed high frequency repetitive seismic source which can easily be fixed at a tunnel boring machine. A user-friendly software package enables online data acquisition, processing, 3D-visualization, and interpretation.

The scope of this subject is a broad one. The demand for a metal with high refractory properties, great strength at elevated temperatures and high nuclear cross section, has put tungsten in the foreground as: the most promising metal to fill some of these requirements. Recently developed techniques have made it possible to roll large tungsten sheet and-the availability of fabricated tungsten is already upon us. More and more, the demand is for purer and still purer metals. Tungsten is no exception. As technology improves, we are learning more about the effect of foreign elements in minor amounts upon the chemical and physical properties of metals. As equipment and technology improve, specifications become more rigid, and reasonably so. Pure metals have revealed properties hitherto unknown in metals produced by former technology.

The mining industry of Georgia, while not as large as in some other states, is still an important part of the economy. Total value of mineral production in 1966 was $148.6 million.l/ Clays and stone produced the most income, Other minerals included sand and gravel, iron ore, mica, talc, barite, bauxite, cement, feldspar, kyanite, peat, and rare-earth metals, titanium and zircon concentrates. Georgia ranks first among the states in production of kaolin, second in fuller's earth and rare-earth concentrates, third in bauxite and kyanite, fourth in barite and ilmenite, and fifth in feldspar. It is quite likely that phosphates will one day be mined in the south eastern part: of the state, and that alumina will be produced from the extensive kaolin deposits in the central part of the state.

Research investigations on the chemistry of the adsorption of gold cyanide on activated carbon have mostly reduced the role of activated carbon as the provider of the large surface area needed for adsorption. Most do not go beyond suggesting that oxygen functional groups on carbon play a key role in the adsorption process. Our research shows that the nature of the material, specifically its structure, is a crucial factor in the adsorption equation. To delineate the effect of adsorbent properties, gold cyanide was adsorbed on a series of carbonaceous adsorbents, including lignite, coals, anthracites, carbon blacks, graphite and activated carbon, which covers wide variations of composition, surface acid group content, and degree of graphitization. The results show that the adsorption of gold cyanide per unit area of adsorbent is not related to the amount of oxygen groups on the surface or even the total oxygen content of the material. However, they show very strong correlation with the degree of graphitization of the adsorbent, which indicates that the graphitic plates of activated carbon play the most important role. The findings suggest that majority of the adsorption occurs on the plate faces of the graphite crystallites of activated carbon.

The Bureau of Mines' Denver Research Center initiated a subsidence research program in 1978. The short ten goals of the program were to determine practical methods and equipment for measuring subsidence and demonstrate these methods by monitoring subsidence at several mines having mining, geologic and topographic variables typical of those encountered in the western United States. Data from the monitoring program would be supplied to cooperating mining companies and used by the Bureau to accomplish the long term objective of developing and validating subsidence prediction techniques applicable to mines in the West. Subsidence monitoring is being conducted at five mines in Colorado and Utah with substantially different mine plans, mining methods, depths of cover, and topography. The monitoring procedures used at each site are similar and include designing the monitoring network layout, installing the subsidence monuments, initial and periodic surveying of the monuments, and processing the survey data. The network layout, surveying methods, and types of monuments vary according to the conditions at the individual sites and the type of data being collected.

Alumina hydroxides such as gibbsite (Al(OH)3) and boehmite (AlOOH) are precursors of many types of alumina that find important industrial applications. The thermal decomposition of AlOOH, which is a more energy saving precursor compared to gibbsite, gives rise to the formation of ?-, d-, ?- and a-aluminas that are used for the production of catalysts. The applications of the aluminas are governed by their properties that are a function of the precursor material and its microstructure. The microstructure in turn is a factor of the method and conditions applied, as well as, in the case of soft chemical processes, on the anions present. Towards these ends, this study was focused on the effect of different anions on the physicochemical characteristics of the alumina hydroxides precipitated in the first 5 minutes after the perturbation of the stability of a supersaturated sodium aluminate solution (Bayer liquor).

Fluorine is a lively element in both its chemical and economic behavior. It was not isolated as an element until 1886 by Moissan. However, its principal source to this day, fluorspar, was known and its special merits recognized long before that time. Our own mining brother, Agricola, is credited with having named fluorite, the mineral name, in 1546 from the Latin, "fluere", to flow. It made things melt and was already being used as a flux. Because fluorspar has been found as a relatively common gangue mineral in metal ore veins, it has long attracted the attention of geological thinkers seeking to, explain the whys and wherefores of veins. Fluorine has been thought of as one of the principal mineralizers, holding metals in ascending vein solutions for deposition close enough to the eventual surface to be accessible for profitable mining.

Microbial leaching is being investigated as a method for recovering the metal values from a domestic low-grade manganese wad ore. Early work showed that heterotrophic microorganisms present in the ore solubilized manganese when cultured in a glucose-mineral salts medium. More recent shake-flask tests using molasses as the sole nutrient source extracted 97 pct of the manganese from minus 300- µm ore in 4 weeks. Column bioleaching with the molasses medium solubilized 99 pct of the manganese from minus 6.3-mm ore in 50 weeks. The results of flask, column, and lab-scale heap bioleaching studies are presented.

Horizontal stress is an important factor that contributes to roof failure during a long wall entry development, especially when the immediate roof is weak. In this study, the effects of the three factors, the stress angle between the maximum horizontal stress and entry development, the stress ratio of the maximum to the minimum horizontal stresses, and the sequence of entry development, on the stress distributions in the weak immediate roof of a three-entry system are analyzed using the finite element method, when the horizontal stress is fixed. The results have confirmed that the stress angle has a significant influence on the stress distributions. Generally, the three-entry system is in the worst stress condition when the angle is about 60°_75°. The stress ratio has little effect on the roof stresses. In addition, the sequence of entry development has also little effect on the roof stress for the specific case analyzed.
