The purpose of this paper is to investigate trends in exploration expenditures of a selected group of mining companies for the interval 1968 through 1971. The paper also compares these trends with other financial factors that are associated with various groups of companies and comments on the implications of these trends. Although a four-year interval is hardly enough time to establish a long-range set of trends from which operating rules can be derived, the fact that the four years selected are in the immediate past gives some sense of relevance to the matter of exploration expenditures at the present time and in the near future. The sample under study here consists of 21 mining companies. Of these, 19 are listed on the New York Stock Exchange and 2 are listed on the American Exchange. Twenty are American, one is Canadian. All are fundamentally "mining companies" in that they derive the bulk of their income from the extraction, sale, and at times, fabrication of metals from their own mines. This is in contrast to companies which have mineral exploration departments but derive the bulk of their revenues from sources other than mining; for example, from oil and gas sates, Also, no companies which can be considered strictly as exploration companies are included in this study. Although this definition held up fairly well when studying this list in 1968, the strict application of this definition became more difficult through the years up to the present time. In 1971, three or four of the companies were changing their character in that they were phasing out of the mining business, and either deriving their income or planning to derive a substantial part of their income from activities other than mining. Volatility is a fact of life in the mining industry. Prices of and demand for mineral products are among the most volatile of those for any product. The volatility of these markets wreaks havoc on both corporate management and the personal lives of mining people. Yet, until recently, it has been difficult to assess the impact of volatility on business strategy. This paper discusses how mining firms can profit from market volatility through an operations strategy that stresses operating flexibility. The foundation for our strategy analysis is the observation that a mine is analogous to a stock option. Techniques based on those developed to value stock options have recently been extended to the field of mine valuation. The insights provided by option pricing are very valuable in the development of mine operating strategy.

This chapter on the square-set system of mining em¬bodies the results of a special study of the subject made as a part of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) general investigation of mining methods and costs. Data for the chapter were gathered by the authors during visits to mines using square-set mining, from information circu¬lars prepared by consulting engineers to the USBM on mining methods at individual mines, and from articles in the technical press and the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. Al¬though some of the properties discussed are no longer in operation, the methods described are still valid. The square-set system of mining has been very widely applied and is one of the oldest methods in use in the US. It is mainly employed for extracting rela¬tively high-grade ore in heavy ground. It is also useful in taking out pillars left in mining by other methods. It is used to some extent as an auxiliary method with many underground systems and as an alternate with cut-and¬fill, shrinkage, and open-stope methods when heavy ground is encountered. In some cases as much as 50% of the ore may be extracted by square setting at mines listed as using some other method of mining. A large tonnage has been mined yearly by square setting, prin¬cipally in the western states. Due to the high cost of timber and the relatively low average production per manshift, this system generally is not used when the ore can be mined by some other method; it usually is adopted as a last resort. Square setting, however, has a special field in that ore bodies not minable by other methods can be stoped by this system. As square-set mining was widely known, there was a tendency for years to use the method regardless of its suitability. With the increasing need for economy and the development of other methods, square setting has been superseded in many mines by cut-and-fill, top slic¬ing, or sublevel caving methods. The term square-set mining as used in this chapter includes all stoping methods in which the space made by the removal of the ore is timbered with framed sets. The sets usually are square in horizontal section. The stope may or may not be filled with waste rock as stoping progresses. HISTORY OF THE SQUARE-SET SYSTEM Prior to 1860, open-stope methods with stulls for casual support accounted for most of the mineral pro¬duction from underground mines. Attempts to mine large ore bodies that required artificial support resulted in disastrous cave-ins and loss of life. The art of mining received a tremendous impetus following the introduc¬tion of methods for mining the bonanza ore body which was discovered in 1860 in the Ophir mine on the Comstock lode, Virginia City, NV. This ore body was phe¬nomenally rich and eventually proved to be 122 m (400 ft) high, 27 m (90 ft) wide, and 98 m (320 ft) long. The mining of this large high-grade ore body taxed the best engineering talent of the time; the problem was finally solved by Philip Deidesheimer. According to Eliot Lord (1882): "At the 50-foot level the vein of black sulphurets was only 3 or 4 feet thick, and could be readily extracted through a drift along its line, propping up the walls and roof when necessary by simple uprights and cap-posts. As the ledge descended the sulphuret vein grew broader until, at the depth of 175 feet, it was 65 feet in width, and the miners were at a loss how to proceed, for the ore was so soft and crumbling that pillars could not be used to support the roof as in coal mines. They spliced timbers together to hold up the caving ground; but these jointed props were too weak and ill-supported to with¬stand the pressure upon them, and were constantly broken and thrown out of place. The dilemma was a curious one. Surrounded by riches, they were yet un¬able to carry them off and their mass of black sulphurets bade fair to become a white elephant on their hands. The Ophir Company began to wish themselves less for¬tunate, as their miners narrowly escaped burial day after day in their attempts to stope out the ore. "A young mining engineer, Philip Deidesheimer, was in charge of a quartz mine in Georgetown, El Dorado County, Calif., in the autumn of 1860, when this serious check to the development of the lode occurred. At the request of William F. Babcock, a trustee of the Ophir Company, Mr. Deidesheimer left his California mine and crossed the mountains with a letter from the direc¬tors of the Ophir Company, authorizing him to inspect the workings of their mines and make such changes in the method of timbering as should seem to him expe¬dient. After examining the vein he designed, in the course of a few weeks, a system of timbering which proved to be exactly adapted to the requirements of the work. Experiments which he had previously made in California gravel and quartz mines furnished the out¬line of his plan. This was to frame timbers together in rectangular sets, each set being composed of a square base, placed horizontally, formed of four timbers, sills, and crosspieces from 4 to 6 feet long, surmounted at the corners by four posts from 6 to 7 feet high, and capped by a framework similar to the base. The cap pieces forming the top of any set were at the same time the sills or base of the next set above. These sets could readily be extended to any required height and over any given area, forming a series of horizontal floors, built up from the bottom sets like the successive stories of a house. The spaces between the timbers were filled with waste rock or with wooden braces, forming a solid cube when¬ever the maximum degree of firmness was desired. By adjustments of these sets the ore bodies along the line of the lode were extracted with comparative ease and security." Adobe, dried mud bricks, have been used since before historic time in the construction of dwellings. Building materials are normally evaluated for thermal performance based on measurements known as R- and U-values. The R-value is an indicator of the ability of a wall to insulate effectively and the higher the R-value, the better it is as an insulating material. The U-value, or value of conductance, is the reciprocal of the R-value and reflects the rate at which heat is conducted through a material. But the "heat capacity of the wall" must also be considered. This measures the length of time that passes before a steady state of heat flow is achieved. The effective U-value measures both the resistance to the transfer of heat and the capacity to hold heat. These latter value make adobe a far more interesting as a modern building material that was formerly recognized.

Within the last few years, there have been numerous techno-logical advancements within material handling due, in part, to the introduction of conveying systems and mobile material handling systems to the industry. Although the traditional material handling methods are still commonly used, the introduction of conveyors to the industry has provided companies with some very efficient and economical options. These "new" systems change with the industry to accommodate rigorous demands, ease of operation, and low operating cost requirements. The number of mobile material handling systems utilized in mining operations is increasing, especially in heap leaching applications. Ten years ago, mobile material handling systems like Mobile Stacking Conveyors (MSC) were considered a novelty. There were two (2) MSC's in actual operation and only one of those in a heap leaching application. Today there are numerous proven systems operating at mine sites around the world-La Coipa, Zaldivar, Florida Canyon, Cananea, El Abra, Chuquicamata, and Radomiro Tomic. The popularity of mobile systems is due to the benefits realized by individual projects. As technology advances, so do the concepts behind mobile material handling systems. Implementing self leveling mechanisms, Programmable Logic Controllers, and Global Positioning Systems to control the equipment are just a few of the recent advances that will be discussed in this paper. We will also discuss current proven systems, and touch on what we see as some of the future advances.

The discovery and development of explosives mark one of the most important findings in the history of civilization. Without explosives our vast economic enterprise concerning the mining of coal, copper, iron, aluminum, and various other ores could not function. Explosives are used in all kinds of construction works, in the razing of old buildings, blasting of trenches, driving of tunnels, and in many other instances common to our everyday life. For these reasons explosives are rightfully referred to as the forerunner of progress. An explosive may be defined as a substance (usually a mixture) that, when flame or shock is applied, yields readily to rapid combustion or oxidation, accompanied by the formation of such relatively large quantities of gases as to produce much violence and pressure which, in turn, react against their surroundings and cause what is termed an explosion. By their very nature the action of explosives is destructive and disruptive of adjacent materials. Decomposition of explosives can occur through deflagration, which is rapid burning or combustion, as in the case of black powder, or through detonation, which is an almost instantaneous disruption, as in the case of dynamites and blasting agents.

All of Canada's older uranium mining areas have been intensively prospected and known outcrops have been repeatedly examined. The only ground in these areas which has not been explored is that which is covered by water or other overburden. The discovery of new mines in these areas will, in the author's opinion, depend on the development of new geophysical or geochemical tools capable of locating uranium deposits which are-buried beneath tens to hundred of feet of overburden. Such tools would be extremely useful in Saskatchewan's Cluff Lake and Wollaston Lake areas. Uranium has recently been discovered in significant quantities in these regions but exploration is made extremely difficult and expensive by an almost uniform overburden cover. The author's experience has been confined to Canada but apparently a subsurface uranium prospecting method could be widely exployed in the western United States and Australia as well. Radon-222 measurements have been used for more than a decade on practically a worldwide basis in an attempt to obtain a useful method for subsurface uranium prospecting. It is well known that ha-222 produced by buried uranium deposits can diffuse through an overburden cover so that it can sometimes be detected at surface. An advantage of this method of prospecting is that Rn-222 can be detected with a simple scintillation, ionization or semiconductor detector. One of the essential weaknesses of the method is that the mean diffusion path length of Rn-222 is limited by its very short (3.8 days) half life. For a deeply buried deposit, vitually all of the Rn-222 atoms will decay before reaching surface and, therefore, such deposits cannot be expected to produce a detectable radon anomaly. Thus, except in unusual cases where groundwater or ground air flow assists the movement of radon towards surface, the depth of exploration is probably limited to ten or twenty feet of overburden cover. The high solubility of Rn-222 in water is also a source of difficulty. In an area where overburden covers bedrock with water saturation of the lower overburden levels, the radon will simply dissolve in the groundwater, and soil gas readings at surface will indicate falsely low

Shovels, trucks and repair bays for the trucks each play their role in the capacity of an open pit operation. It is therefore convenient to have a procedure for the capacity calculation which takes all 3 factors into consideration in a comprehensive manner. This can be done by means of a cycle model, earlier developed for the shovel-dumper circuits, when the repair facility with its number of repair bays is added as a superimposed service system, which the trucks visit at certain specified intervals. The calculation model transforms the mechanical availability of the trucks into their operational availability. The system's capacity in truckloads per shift and the trucks' operational availability of certain combinations of shovels, trucks and repair bays are shown.

Hydrocyclone separators are widely used in various industrial applications in the oil and mining industries to sort, classify, and separate solid particles or liquid droplets within liquid suspensions, which are considered to be multiphase systems. Numerous valuable studies have been conducted in recent years to investigate the flow fields inside hydrocyclones. However, much of the information regarding the performance of cyclones in the literature has limitations and much of it cannot be considered as completely applicable to most real-world applications; many of the studies investigated the flow fields within extremely simplified hydraulic designs that are not representative of the complex geometries or large sizes which are typical in industry. Therefore, in this study, the two-phase flow system inside the actual hydraulic geometry of a milling circuit hydrocyclone is explored with the aid of both computational and experimental techniques (particle image velocimetry (PIV)). More specifically, the flow field with an air core has been investigated. In addition, the air-liquid two phases flow in a hydrocyclone might cause some challenges on both the computational and experimental sides. Two turbulence models are utilized in the numerical calculations: the Reynolds stress model and large eddy simulation. The computational studies are mainly focused on the local flow behavior and the prediction of the dimensions and shape of the air core. Different section planes of hydrocyclone are selected as planes of interest and divided into several fields of view (FOV) for PIV measurements. Two-dimensional experimental velocity vector maps are obtained in each of the fields of view. The computational results are validated globally using pressure and flow rate readings at the boundaries and locally by comparison to the PIV velocity vector maps and profiles.

Universities have education as their primary purpose. This appears to be an innocuous statement with simple meaning. In an age of conflicting semantics, however, cords and meanings are often lost or changed. The term education is often broadly expanded to encompass any form of learning process, or the accumulation of knowledge, and even to the beneficial application of knowledge to man's problems, hence one find that education in universities is not solely the formal process of texts, lectures, recitations, and testing by a batch process known as class room teaching. Despite critics of education batch is spelled with an "a", instead of an "o" - at least we hope so If one defines teaching as causing to learn, then the learning objectives may necessitate a variety of approaches within the teaching concept and research is among those favored at the graduate and some undergraduate levels. Research has been among the glamour words and certain fields such as oceanography and space science have had more than their share of glamour. Unfortunately, industrial mineral research has not had the competitive drawing power of enamoring students of the "note" generation in terms of glamorous accomplishment. Research today usually requires sophisticated equipment and such equipment is expensive, both for initial purchase and operation. Unitization and containerization continue to grow with great rapidity throughout the world today. Every industrial nation outside of the Iron Curtain is devoting more and more time toward research of these developing sciences. Unitization and containerization are proving to be the solution to many of modern industry's most pressing handling and shipping problems. Manufacturers make large savings, carriers receive many benefits, and customers take an increasing interest in demanding that their shipments either be unitized or containerized. Unit-loads consist of items, packages or bulk materials pre-assembled into a convenient mass for handling by mechanized equipment and to fit the internal dimensions of carriers. It has been found that unitized handling and shipping offers cost savings too great to be ignored by anyone interested in the distribution of goods. At present, the benefits from unitized shipping and handling are being enjoyed only to a small extent due to the failure of many persons concerned with handling practices in recognizing only some of the advantages of unitization. Before the full benefits of unitized handling and shipping can be realized, some major changes in packaging and distribution practices will be necessary on the part of industry. Numerous investigations in the last two years show conclusively that there are more advantages and more inherent savings for shipping goods on pallets in unit loads than by any other method. There is no question that unit-load handling can offer significant advantages to the user over piece-by-piece package handling. Reduction in handling costs is the primary objective of such activities, but it is by far not the sole objective. Some of the other benefits that can be realized are:

Glass is the most unique substance which man has made. It is understood that Phoenician sailors playing on the beach in Mesopotanmia around 12000 BC, produced glass by the fusion of sand and soda in their campfire. Glass is unique for many reasons. However, let us consider the following. It is made of materials which are opaque and yet glass can be translucent, transparent, or opaque. It can be as soft as cotton or stronger than steel. It transmits light readily and yet is totally impervious to gases and liquids. It is chemically an inert, creates very little pollution in its manufacture. It is made of the most abundant raw materials on earth. It is readily recyclable and has little pollution in its disposal. Glass containers are made principally from sand (that is, silica), soda, which is sodium carbonate, and lime, which is calcium carbonate, plus decolorizers or colorants and cullet. The proportion of cullet, broken glass, in most glass tanks today is roughly 10 to 20% of the glass product. In most cases, the cullet used in the plant is glass from off-ware, or broken ware, which is a waste product within the plant. Cullet has the following advantages. It contains all of the raw materials normally used in a batch. It tends to melt at a lower temperature than batch, thus saving some fuel, and, finally, by forming a crust above the normal melting system, there is a tendency to cut down air pollution.

In the beginning of the third millennium, the world mining industry has to cope with many challenges; the continuous need for mineral resource deposits and the mostly unsolved economic efforts should be accompanied with ecologic measures mankind has to take in order to avoid self-destruction. The present paper analyses the possibilities of using underground mining spaces in Romania for storing dangerous waste and suggests viable solutions. The characteristics of dangerous wastes and their disposal in suitable underground spaces are analyzed. Also, some methods for deactivating dangerous solid wastes as well as the importance of monitoring underground spaces in order to eliminate environmental impact risks are presented.

Under the Wilderness Act of 1964 and the accompanying House Conference Report, the Geological Survey and Bureau of Mines are charged with the responsibility of making recurring mineral studies of wilderness and wilderness candidate areas in national forests within and proposed for the National Wilderness Preservation System. The Wilderness Act, a major shift from the multiple-use concept of national forests, identified for the first time the value of mineral resource information in decisions for single-use designation of public lands. This concept was further realized when the Secretary of the Interior in May 1974 recommended that mineral studies be made prior to wilderness recommendations for five large Interior-managed game ranges and the Glacier Bay National Monument aggregating 7.8 million acres. Presently, our studies have been completed on 126 wilderness and proposed wilderness areas totaling 15.4 million acres in the national forests. In 1973, 1 year in advance of the act's 10-year review deadline, we completed the 34 primitive areas, originally the only potential additions considered by the 1964 Act.

During the last decade various modifications of room and pillar and sub-level methods have been tried in an effort to eliminate gob-fires, dangers from roof falls, surface subsidence and to increase efficiency of extraction in the Armutcuk Mine, Turkey. It was eventually decided that the most likely system to give maximum benefits in view of existing geological conditions and coal seam characteristics was a system of cut-and-fill stoping employing hydraulic stowing. This paper has attempted to examine the trends of working techniques of hydraulic stowing. In addition, the results achieved and technical problems involved are discussed.

Ore Reserve Models are well established evaluation and mine planning tools. BY definition, these models are made up of regularly sized blocks, arranged in a three dimensional matrix. Two dimensions correspond to north and east directions, and the third, to the depth or elevation. The dimensions of the blocks need not be equal, but generally at least two of the dimensions are equal. The blocks are located in space by coordinates which are generally translated into index values for computer applications. Each block will have quantitative attributes, such as grades, densities, rock characteristics, etc. assigned to it. The process of assigning values to each block in the three dimensional matrix is the process of ore reserve model development. One of several interpolation procedures may be employed to predict the value of a block, based on surrounding data. Block value models have several uses. The utilization of block models in ore reserve computations is quite common. Here, ore reserves may be calculated by level or by cross-section for the entire deposit. For each ore reserve calculation, multiple cut-off grades may be analyzed to determine the ore reserves under different cut-off conditions. The other major use of block value models is in mine simulation. Through simulation, profitable studies that analyze the effect of alternate ore removal sequences can be undertaken to determine economic optimality. Other studies that are undertaken in mine simulation problems include the evaluation of mine layout, pit slope effects, and the impact of varying cut-off grades.

IIT Research Institute has initiated several multi-sponsored research programs. In this paper the methods for developing four of these programs are discussed. In general, a broad area of investigation must be proposed to interest a spectrum of different industries. The work must not touch upon proprietary data and will probably involve a number of scientific disciplines. Thus, the problem to be solved will attract sponsors who need to know more about the area under study but do not wish, as a single company, to commit the resources required to obtain the necessary know-how for their needs. The paper draws on the background of four IITRI multi-sponsored projects: Size Reduction, a study of grinding of material to reduce their particle size; Melt-Formed Ceramics Research, a method of producing dense, polycrystalline ceramics using glass forming methods; Binders in Ceramic Processing, which addresses the problems associated with the use of organic aids for ceramic processing; and a Study in Air Pollution Technology, a program to review and assess pollution control equipment for current and future applications.

The principles of classification of reserves and resources in the Soviet Union were developed in 1960. Mineral reserve calculations were reviewed by the State Committee on Reserves for approval, then registered in the State List of Mineral Deposits and included in the State Balance of the Reserves. In 1981, however, a new "System of Classification of Reserves and Resources of Mineral Deposits" was adopted. This classification system (Table 1) is still used today in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). It subdivides mineral concentrations into seven categories in three major groups, based on the level of exploration performed: explored reserves (A, B, C,), evaluated reserves (C) and prognostic resources (P1, P2, P3). Explored reserves Explored reserves are calculated within exploration contours. Category A The A category is the highest level of classification for any given mineral deposit and requires comprehensive exploration. First, the ore body's position, shape and structure must be accurately delineated (Fig. 1). Next, the mineralogy of the ore body must be studied to determine its composition and properties as well as the distribution of both ore and detrimental components. It is also necessary to outline the blocks of barren rocks and limits of subeconomic ores and to distinguish between the different types, grades and physical-chemical properties (mineral texture and structure) of the ore, the

Brockway Glass Company, Inc., manufactures glass containers at fourteen plants located in nine states. The relatively high place value of the major glass batch components dictates that raw material supplies be obtained from numerous sources in the United States and Canada. One objective of our central composition control program is to arrive at a glass composition with similar physical properties at each of our plant locations. This requires that adjustments be made in the batch compositions to compensate for chemical variations from one raw material source to another. Minor chemical variations will occur in sand, limestone, and dolomite from one source to another. Major variations are present in the alumina sources because of the diverse rock types utilized.
