Lyon with half a million inhabitants is the third largest city in France. Urban agglomerations such as Greater Lyon demand intelligent underground solutions for the freedom of mobility of its inhabitants. The city and metropolitan area of Lyon provide an example of a city strategy adapted to the changing needs due to demographic and living standard trends. The Lyon Metro Line B with a length of 2.4 km is one of the strategic projects with regard to city planning and future mobility. The paper will highlight on this special area of application in singular diverse geology with sophisticated mechanized tunnelling technology.

Limestone-based material appears to be an effective arsenic removal process that has great potential for source reduction in drinking water. Limestone-based material offers several benefits to the drinking water community: 1) reasonable removal efficiency as compared to material cost, 2) broad geographic and water system applicability, 3) compatibility with other water treatment processes, 4) ease of technical use, and 5) low-cost disposal in ordinary landfills. Batch and column experiments have evaluated the removal efficiency of several limestone types. Additives and material alteration have increased the removal efficiency. Granulation of powdered limestone as a filter media currently is being investigated.

Sand bed filters are used to remove large and small particles from liquid streams. The large particles are removed by the straining action of the filter bed and the small particles are removed by particle deposition on the surface of the bed particles. Particle deposition, while being essential for the filtering action of colloidal particles, is not the only process that occurs in the filter bed. Other processes that occur are (1) the substrate becomes filled with particles limiting further deposition, and (2) some deposited particles are resuspended. The sum total of all these processes determine the performance of a filter bed.

5.1 INTRODUCTION There are several types of surface ground disturbances, each of which is immediately transmitted to surface structures and causes damage of various forms, depending on the location of the structures in the subsidence basin. Many criteria have also been proposed for defining the potential structural damage. All of these topics will be discussed in this chapter. 5.2 TYPES OF GROUND DAMAGES There are two types of ground damage, continuous and dis¬continuous, that could inflict damages to surface structures. Dis¬continuous ground damage is open fractures of various degrees. Four types of fractures are commonly seen (Brauner, 1973b): 1. Fissures or cracks. Cracks are the most common form of ground damage and range from completely closed to several feet wide. Surface cracks are most prominent when the ratio of mining depth to mining height is smaller than 30 to 50 times mining height. Cracks initiate parallel to, but ahead of the moving long¬wall face at some intervals when the depth-to-mining height ratio is less than 25 to 30. As the face continues to move, they open up and then close gradually, and in most cases eventually close up completely when the face moves farther away. Sometimes when the depth-to-mining height ratio is larger, cracks may initiate be¬hind the face and go through the same cycle. Cracks are also more likely to occur in the hill when the face is moving in the uphill direction. Cracks also occur at or near both sides of the panel edges. Those cracks tend to remain open permanently. When the surface is covered with grass or other vegetation, cracks of less than 1 to 2 in. wide usually do not penetrate it and become invisible on the surface. 2. Steps. A step may occur when the longwall face stops abruptly if the mining depth-to-mining height ratio is less than 20. Steps may also occur along the panel edges. Steps also range from a few inches to a few feet in width and depth. If planes of weakness are oriented favorably, ground will slide along these planes and form steps on the surface. 3. Cave-in pits. These result from local collapse of the ground from the mine level to the surface when the mining depth is less than 150 ft and occur mostly above abandoned mined lands. They may be as large as 40 ft wide and deep. 4. Bumps (compression ridges). Bumps result from ground compression and occur mostly near panel center some time after mining. Bumps of up to 4 ft, but mostly 1 to 2 ft, have been identified. Continuous ground damage refers to the formation of the sub¬sidence basin where continuous nondestructive ground deforma¬tions occur. As mentioned earlier, continuous ground deforma¬tions associated with a subsidence basin include subsidence, slope, curvature, displacement, horizontal strain, twisting, and shearing. 5.3 TYPES OF SURFACE STRUCTURAL DAMAGES Both continuous and discontinuous ground disturbance cause damage to surface structures. A. Structural Damages Due to Discontinuous Ground Disturbance 1. Fissures or cracks. Open cracks can cause dislocation of surface structure if the gaps are sufficiently large so that the struc¬tural elements cannot resist but fail. On the other hand, minor cracks affect only the appearance, and not the structural integrity. 2. Steps. When a surface structure is located on a step, some portions of the structure lose support and become overhung. In the case of a residential house, there will likely be many open frac¬tures in the overhung portions, followed in severe cases by sepa¬ration of the superstructure at the edge of the step. 3. Cave-in pits. If the caved-in pit is larger than the surface structure, the structure will drop into the pit and become unstable. If the caved-in pit is smaller than the surface structure, the struc¬ture may either become overhung or lose support in some portions. In either case, it is unsafe for use. 4. Bumps (compression ridges). Bumps will disrupt roadways or house floor. If located under supporting members of the struc¬tures, it may cause damages. B. Structural Damage Due to Continuous Ground Disturbances 1. Subsidence. Pure subsidence or uniform subsidence over an area does not cause any structural damage. However, if it becomes a topographical low area, it may be flooded with water and make the surface structures unusable. It must be noted that the flat bottom area at the center of the final supercritical subsidence basin does not reach that position suddenly. Rather, as shown in Fig. 3.1, it is subjected to the dynamic surface deformation asso¬ciated with the traveling subsidence basin before it is left behind to be part of the flat-bottom area. Therefore any structure located at the center of the final supercritical subsidence basin must be able to resist the dynamic surface deformation in order not to be dam¬aged. 2. Slope. Ground slope will induce tilting of the structure. Tall structures with small base areas, such as water towers, chimneys, and power transmission towers are most sensitive to ground slope. If the ground slope is such that if after tilting the center of the gravity of the tilted structure falls outside the base area, it will topple, but this seldom occurs. Ground slope will change the designed slope of a buried trans¬portation pipeline, either increasing or decreasing the original slope depending on whether the ground slope coincides with or opposes the original slope. There are maximum allowable final slopes for various types of transporting materials. Ground slope also affects highways and railways. There is a maximum allowable final slope for a railway because tractive effort increases 1/1000 of its weight for every increase of 1/1000 in grade. 3. Curvature. There are positive (convex) and negative (con¬cave) curvatures. When a surface structure is located on a positive curvature, both ends become unsupported, followed by bending upward at the midportion. The top portion is subjected to more severe stretching than the lower one. In 1994 Newmont Gold Company commissioned a 2.5 Mt/a refractory gold ore roasting plant near Carlin Nevada. Many unique characteristics of this facility required use of specialized materials of construction in the areas of dry grinding, roasting, gas cleaning, and sulfuric acid production. Process conditions and design criteria that necessitated the use of special materials include; siliceous and abrasive ore, low roasting temperatures, gas streams with high concentrations of oxygen and sulfur, and stringent environmental regulations. Materials selected for use were ceramics, corrosion resistant steels, high temperature steels, and high temperature polymers, lead, polypropylene and low flammability PVC.

The leaching of gold and silver from various ores in ammoniacal solutions conta1mng various oxidants has been investigated. The samples tested included elemental gold, sulfidic as well as carbonaceous refractory ores, and tellurides. When pure elemental gold powders were used, the maximum amount of gold dissolved under the conditions studied was 16.3 ppm, 42.4 ppm, 82.0 ppm, and 152.2 ppm, respectively, at 140°C, 160° C, 180° C, and 200°C. Five different refractory ore samples were also tested. The recoveries of gold and silver from these refractory ores were typically 92% and 95%, respectively.

Refractory, sulfidic gold ore from the Metates deposit in Mexico was tested to determine if it could be heap biooxidized to improve gold extraction. Small column tests were conducted in a manner consistent with anticipated process conditions: increased tempera­ture due to oxidation of the high sulfide content ofMetates ore and full recycle application of leach solutions containing high concen­trations of dissolved solids. Biooxidation by thermophilic (heat­loving) microorganisms was tested to determine: 1. the extent of sulfide oxidation and bottle roll precious metal recovery, 2. reagent consumption, and 3. potential solution flow problems due to mineral precipitation.

Potash is a generic term that includes potassium chloride, potassium magnesium sulfate, potassium sulfate, potassium nitrate, and sodium-potassium nitrate mixtures. In the ceramics industry, potash is also used to refer to potassium oxide. Potash, primarily in the form of potassium carbonate, was the first industrial mineral produced in the United States, and the first US patent issued was for an apparatus and process developed in 1790 for its production (Paynter, 1990). Prior to the 1860s, potash was primarily sold as an impure form of potassium carbonate produced by burning hard- wood trees and leaching the potassium salts from the ashes. The major early uses of potash include soap and glass making, dyeing fabrics, baking, and saltpeter for gunpowder. In 1859, the development of a purification process to remove the sodium and magnesium chlorides was developed for the carnallite found at Stassfurt, Germany, and mined potash became available. With the appearance of mined potash and the earlier (1840) discovery in Germany by Justus von Liebig that potash was a nutrient for crops, potash started to be used for high valued crops such as cotton and vegetables. The German potash companies quickly developed a manufacturing process for producing potassium sulfate for tobacco fertilization. German potash supplied nearly all American needs until the embargo of the First World War when imports from Germany were interrupted (Bateman, 1918). With the discovery of potash deposits in New Mexico in 1931, the United States became self-sufficient in potash. In 1962, the United States began importing potash from Canada, and two years later domestic apparent consumption began to exceed domestic production. Along with nitrogen and phosphorus, potassium is one of the three essential plant nutrients, the "K" of NPK terminology. As a result, 95% of potash production is used as plant fertilizer. In all plants, inadequate potassium diminishes growth, causes increased disease, stalk and stem breakage, and susceptibility to other stress conditions. Plants take up large quantities of potassium from the soil, and potash fertilization replaces this loss so that each new crop can be grown with the same vigor and productivity as the previous year's crop. The potassium depletion of the soil from growing repeated cotton and tobacco crops is well known in the history of southern agriculture in America. George Washington was known to have studied alternative crops that could be grown on soil that had been depleted by repeated tobacco crops. Most of the remaining 5% of potash consumption is by the chemical industry, as potassium hydroxide to produce soaps and detergents, glass and ceramic products, dyes, explosives, alkaline batteries, and medicines. Potash as chemical is used in oil field drilling mud, the aluminum recycling industry, and the electroplating industry. Additional minor uses for potassium chloride include water softener regeneration, sidewalk deicing, and salt substitution for human consumption. Potash is used in the food industry as potassium phosphate, and in production of glass products as potassium carbonate or nitrate. GEOLOGY Potassium is the seventh most abundant element in the earth's crust and the sixth most abundant element in seawater. It is found in silicate minerals of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks and is also a major constituent of many surface and subsurface brines. The majority of world potash resources are found in subsurface bedded salt deposits which yield high grade, large tonnage ore bodies and are amenable to low cost mining and beneficiation. Because of the relatively high solubility of potassium minerals, potash from salt deposits is ideal for use as fertilizers. Some potash production is from evaporation of naturally occurring brines, but the vast majority of current domestic and international production is from bedded salt deposits. Sylvite, carnallite, kainite, and langbeinite are some of the more important potassium minerals (Table 1). Sylvinite, a mixture of KC1 and NaCl is the highest grade potash ore. Carnallite can be considered a potash ore when removal of magnesium chloride is included in the beneficiation, but it can also be considered a contaminant when mining for sylvite. Potassium sulfate and potassium nitrate are typically manufactured products. Potassium sulfate is produced from mined minerals through conversion processes in Italy, Germany, and Carlsbad, NM, and from brines in southern California and at the Great Salt Lake in Utah. Natural deposits of potassium nitrate occur only in small amounts in Chile. The majority of potash-bearing bedded salt deposits are believed to have originated from the evaporation of seawater or mixtures of seawater and other brines in restricted marine basins (Schmalz, 1969). The reflux depositional model for evaporite deposition was first described in the literature in 1888 by Ochsenius. A shallow bar, or sill, across the mouth of a basin lets in a restricted flow of seawater which evaporates into a salt-precipitating brine (Fig. 1). The density of the brine at the distal end increases with increased salinity, sinks to the bottom, and sets up a reflux current of higher density brine back toward the ocean. The sill, which restricts the inflow of seawater, allows inhibited flow of evaporation-concentrated brines back to the ocean. The least soluble salts are precipitated nearer the sill, and the most soluble components come out of solution in the deeper parts of the basin. The result is a lateral facies change in a tabular-shaped deposit that is due to the salinity gradients in the brine (Fig. 2A). The asymmetrical facies distribution of the Paradox Formation (Middle Pennsylvanian) Utah (Hite, 1970), the Prairie Formation (Middle Devonian) in Saskatchewan (Holter, 1972), and the Salado Formation (Upper Permian) in New Mexico (Lowenstein, 1988), might prompt explanation by such a model. Other deposits, such as the Salina Formation (Upper Silurian) in Michigan (Matthews and Egleson, 1974), show a facies distribution that could be described as a bull's eye pattern. Although some small subbasins of high grade sylvite are found near the margins, the potash is generally located in a central part of the basin surrounded by successively less soluble facies (Fig. 2B). The Kramer borate deposit is located in the western Mojave Desert at Boron, California, about 100 miles northeast of Los Angeles (Figure 1). The deposit derives its name from the district in which it lies. Borax (Na2 B407.10H2O) is being mined from the Boron open pit to serve a major portion of the United States and world borate markets. This paper deals primarily with those geologic factors which affect slope stability in the overburden at the Boron open pit. Discussion includes slope failure history, slope monitoring techniques and the results of a dipmeter survey of overburden structure. Open pit mining was begun at Boron in 1957. The initial pit was successfully excavated at the recommended 1.5:1 (horizontal to vertical) slope in the overburden. During pit expansion in 1962, excavation of the overburden exposed beds dipping into the pit at +15 degrees and numerous high angle fractures associated with two intersecting fracture systems, the West Jenifer and Portal fault zones. Ensuing south and east wall failures indicated the need for more structural information in the arkose to establish better wall design criteria. Barnard and Kistler (1963) recognized that the many facies changes, faults and other variables in the Boron overburden make it extremely difficult to reduce prediction of slides to a simple arithmetical formula. Despite the difficulties and uncertain¬ties, special programs such as surface resistivity, refraction seismic and core drilling were conducted in an attempt to predict slope stability conditions and to gather geologic information. These early efforts while helpful, did not provide the necessary details of bedding orientations and fault locations which are of paramount importance in our slope stability program. A dipmeter survey in 1974 successfully measured these variables and data from that survey are instrumental in the design of slopes currently being excavated.

Though sedimentary rocks comprise only about five percent of the volume of the continental crust, they cover about 80% of its surface, serve as important reservoirs for fluids, contain reserves of non-metallic minerals, and have in general been extensively drilled. However, most drilling has been shallow in comparison to the thickness of the crust and such deep drilling as has taken place is very strongly localized in sedimentary basins. This may be seen by reference to Figures 1 and 2 which show the location of wells that drilled deeper than 15,000' [=] 4.6 km. (Figure 1) and those that drilled below 20,000' [=] 6.15 km. (Figure 2). It is apparent that, even in regions of sedimentary cover, direct exploration below six kilometers has been very restricted. In the case of the metamorphic and igneous rocks which make up 95% of the volume of the crust, direct exploration has been much less extensive in terms of both area and depth. The present state of our knowledge of the crust below a' thin surface layer stands in marked contrast to our growing present need for raw materials and the needs of future generations. It also stands in contrast to our need for enhanced, scientific knowledge of the deeper crust, its configuration, its present state, its hydrothermal systems,-its evolution, and its materials. Lessons learned in exploring the third dimension of the sea floor, the vigorous prosecution of seismic profiling, the development of testable models for hydrothermal systems and mineral deposits, the need for better understanding of heat flow, state of stress, earthquake mechanisms, and a host of other phenomena all suggest that it is time to launch a national program for scientific exploration of the crust which uses drilling to test important hypotheses developed on the basis of indirect evidence.

During 1983, 42.2% of the 686.0 (624.3 Mt) million tons of coal reported, 289.6 (263.5 Mt) million tons were mechanically cleaned, of which 107 (97.4 Mt) million tons were cleaned by dense media (magnetite and sand) processes.' The percentage of bituminous coal and lignite cleaned mechanically by dense medium processes increased from 7 to 38% between 1938 and 1983. The Electric Power Research Institute estimates that 150 million tons (137 Mt) of coal were cleaned by heavy-media processes in 1986, and that this number may increase to 265 million tons (241 Mt) by 1990.2 Dense medium separations include those coal preparation processes that clean raw coal by immersing it in a fluid having a density intermediate between clean coal and reject. As there is a general correlation between ash content and specific gravity, it is possible to achieve the required degree of removal of ash-forming impurities from a raw coal by regulating the specific gravity of the separating fluid. Dense medium processes generally offer the following advantages over other coal cleaning processes: • Ability to make sharp separations at any specific gravity within the range normally required even in the presence of high percentages of raw coal whose specific gravity is near the specific gravity of separation. • Ability to maintain a separating gravity that can be controlled within + 0.005 sp gr units. • Ability to handle a wide range of coal sizes. • Ability to change specific gravity of separation to meet varying market requirements. • Ability to handle fluctuations in feed, in terms of both quantity and quality. Unfortunately, dense medium processes can have the following disadvantages: • Relatively high capital costs caused primarily by the need for equipment to collect and recycle the medium. Relatively high operating costs caused primarily by operation of medium recycle equipment and loss of medium.

Technology and economies of scale have, in the past decade, brought about the emergence of giant vessels. Meanwhile, to answer the need for rapid dispatch, as a means of combating the proportionately far greater demurrage charges, shiploading and unloading speeds have soared (Ref. 1, 2, 3). As the loading and unloading rates have dramatically increased, so has the cloud of dust grown in unbearable proportions. It not only has threatened to be a real menace to machinery and men, but in certain instances has also seriously jeopardized fish and marine life (Ref. 4). In an era when ecology is king, dust in shiploading and unloading can no longer be shrugged off as a mere public nuisance, and its control is now duly recognized as of grave concern to all. Even if public outcry were not a problem, from the operator's own parochial point of view, dust can adversely affect productivity and the well-being of the operating personnel. Without adequate control, it can also result in costly equipment maintenance, particularly when the dust is micronic in size, and abrasive. The Hierarchy of Control Techniques Given the great fortune of not yet having to deal with gas and odors, in the jargon of pollution control, our problem is confined to having to control "particulates" only. To deal with "particulates", the myriad of dust control techniques can be utterly confusing to those who are not entirely well versed in the methodology. Our analysis of what is available to date results in the following hierarchy of logical preferences: 1. Prevention 2. Removal 3. Suppression 4. Containment 5. Dilution Since it deals with the root cause, prevention always outranks the cure. Once the dust is generated, removal nips it in the bud. Only when dust removal is

Drilling of small diameter blast holes in the conventional tunnel driving system or mining operation still consumes a significant part of the time and money required to extend an opening in rock. The use of pneumatic drills for most small hole applications has been the dominant tool used by miners and tunnel men alike throughout the world. But now, a, trend has been started that is showing major inroads into the traditional areas of pneumatics drilling for all types of rocks. Operators dealing in very soft materials, such as coal, salt or potash, traditionally had the option to use hydraulic power for their drilling tools. Twelve to fifteen years ago, drillers in medium hard, but nonabrasive rock extended their drill machine option by helping to develop a drill that still used air to power the hammers, but relied on hydraulic power for the rotational torque and feed thrust. (1) This was a significant step forward, particularly for those who drilled in rocks that were compatible to rotary-percussion bits. However, this application was in fact somewhat limited to the limestone and dolomite formation of mid-United States and the softer sediments in Europe. Now high performance rock drills have been developed, using all-hydraulics for both the hammer and rotation, that have many advantages over the conventional pneumatic systems. In two previous papers on this subject, (2)(3) this author reviewed in detail: 1) the characteristics of each of the manufacturer's products that were on the market; 2) The specific advantages of the all-hydraulic drilling systems; 3) Data from the applications of these drilling systems that was in use; 4) What was needed to further develop this drilling system and utilize its potential in the mining or tunnelling cycle. It is felt that prior to the presentation of the technical portion of this paper, some general information would be of interest. The Sar Cheshmeh Copper Mining Company was founded by the Iranian Government to oversee the design and construction of Iran's first copper smelter complex, which will be another step in the industrialization of Iran. Since this is the first such plant in Iran, Sar Cheshmeh wisely chose to enlist the technical assistance needed in regard to the facilities requiring engineering and operating know-how from outside of Iran. To obtain the foregoing, SCCM signed a contract with Anaconda-Iran, Inc., which was formed by The Anaconda Company for this project. The general scope of this contract covers the overseeing of engineering and design by Parsons-Jurden as well as physical plant construction. In addition to this, the same services were given to water supply and tailings disposal systems which were not included as part of the Parsons-Jurden contract. Anaconda-Iran is also assisting SCCM in setting up a training program for Iranian personnel for plant operations, administration, etc., which .will go on for some time after the plant startup, under the guidance of Anaconda-Iran expatriates. SCCM?s other responsibilities, in respect to the development of this industrial effort, are the building of a townsite for approximately 2200 families, the expected manning requirements, having all the facilities necessary to provide a pleasant life in a remote area. It has been estimated that the manpower for operations will be 2050.

The Rio Tinto-Zinc Corporation Limited (RTZ), through it exploration company Riofinex, commenced exploration for bauxite in the Amazonia region of Brazil during 1970. Following' encouraging indications, exploration licences were taken out and an exploration programme was initiated In February 1975, a preliminary 'feasibility report indicated that a project, based on the Miltonia plateau located close to the town of Paragominas in the State of Para, was viable and that barging might offer an economic solution to getting the product to an ocean-going port. A, decision was taken in April 1975 to proceed with a full feasibility study. In the latter stages of the study, an engineering consortium of Mendes Junior and Bechtel do Brasil was employed to review, and modify if necessary, the concepts that RTZ had developed for the project's operation. With these concepts agreed, the consortium was requested to make capital and operating cost estimates, and these became available during February 1978. The deposit is being developed by a Brazilian company Mineracao Vera Cruz S.A. (MVC) in which the present share-holding is owned 64 percent by RTZ and 36 percent by Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD). RTZ is a British based international group of mining and industrial companies with interests in almost every major metal and fuel. CVRD is a Brazilian mining company, 85 percent owned by the Brazilian Government, with a major interest in iron ore and also other non-ferrous metals. It is intended, in due course, that the company will become majority owned by Brazilian interests.

The mechanization of the materials management function must contribute to the overall goal of optimization of profits. A computerized system contributes to the profitability of the company by saving more than it costs to operate. Design and implementation of the sys- tem must respond to the needs of users, the operating environment of the property, and must support the objectives of materials management. Three basic functions interact within the scope of materials management. They are inventory control, purchasing, and warehousing which have the following objectives: 1) Inventory control-to request materials in a timely manner and in quantities that provide the best level of support to users at the lowest cost. 2) Purchasing-to purchase requested materials and services at the required time and at the lowest cost. 3) Warehousing-to efficiently receive, store, and issue materials and to prepare accurate transaction documents for the activities. The development of the mechanized materials management system will require a plan and objective analysis by management and system users of system requirements. A typical plan would include: 1) System Design Objectives-the development of objectives that support mechanization of the materials management function. 2) System Characteristics and Concepts- the development of key system concepts and characteristics, which identify the needs of materials management. 3) System Inventory Item Classification- development and assignment of inventory category codes to inventory items. 4) System Order Decision Rules-the development of decision rules and forecasting techniques to minimize the inventory investment and to provide acceptable support levels. 5) System Report Structure-the development of a report structure to support the goals and objectives of materials management. 6) System Report Design-the development and design of reports for effective utilization of the mechanized system.

We ought not look back unless it is to de- rive from past errors, and for the purpose of profiting by dear bought experience. - George Washington During the mid 1960's, the application of automation was introduced to Climax by two process control companies. In 1969 Climax decided to seriously consider improved control of selected areas of their milling process after preliminary research had been completed on two rougher ball mill grinding circuits. In 1971 the Climax Mill Department developed a direct digital control scheme for rougher milling, designed a remote control center for handling process water, planned to automate the central steam heating facility for energy conservation, and convert other plant areas to automation. All twenty rougher grinding mills and the industrial water system were automated by 1977. The idea of automating central heating and other areas was abandoned although some fuel conservation items were installed at the heating plant. During this period from 1971 to 1978, the mill capacity was expanded from 39,000 metric tons per day to 43,000 metric tons per day and cyclone classification was introduced to rougher milling. Ore quality changes degraded the milling recovery from over 90% to less than 85%. This report describes the procedure the mill used in developing the automatic process and the occurances that affected the timing and fina1 control logic. The report deals primarily with the automation of the ball mill grinding, classification and flotation process as this was the bulk of the seven-year project.

The persistent requirement for methods and equipment capable of detecting hazardous anomalies in advance of underground mining has led to the development by the U.S. Bureau of Mines of a directional radar probe. The probe operates from boreholes drilled from the surface into the underground region to be mined. The engineering model radar was completed in early 1982 and field demonstration tests were performed in May of that year at a selected coal mine. Preliminary in-situ electromagnetic tests were performed at several candidate coal mines to evaluate the radio-frequency characteristics of the coal. A coal mine in New Mexico was selected on the basis of low EM propagation losses in the coal and the presence of an extensive coal seam displacing fault as a radar target. The borehole radar was operated in two vertical boreholes which intersected the coal seam at approximately 25 and 40 feet from the fault interface. Radar reflections from the coal/ rock interface were detected in both tests. Underground tests in a horizontal borehole in the coal were less successful because of interfering reflections. Additional borehole-to-borehole tests were performed with a separate ground penetrating electromagnetic system to obtain radar range calibration data. The coal was found to be bounded by very lossy roof and floor sandstone and shale while propagation through the coal seam was obtained at distances up to 175 feet between test boreholes. Coal seam continuity was indicated by the hole-to-hole experiments through a section of the seam previously thought to be completely cut off by the fault.

Talc deposits in the Precambrian of southwestern Montana (Beaverhead and Madison Counties) are unique within the U. S. A. in that large bodies of tremolite-free talc can be open-pit mined. All known deposits are in pre-Beltian dolomite units. The origin is suspected to be metasomatic, with the siliceous component having been contributed by an intrusive Precambrian granite gneiss. Precambrian deformation was extreme and is characterized by multiple periods of tight isoclinal folding and the flowage of less competent rocks, rather than by faulting. Post- Precambrian folding has been relatively negligible; the characteristic Laramide structure is block-faulting developed along northwest-southeast trends. The talc is thought to have been formed in Precambrian time; the high-angle block-faults probably have no significance with regard to the formation of the talc, but do tend to complicate mining operations. Tremolite-free talc ore bodies with horizontal widths of more than 200 feet, vertical depths of several hundreds of feet, and strike-lengths of as much as one-half mile are known in the Ruby Range and the Gravelly Range. Where dolomite is interbedded with tremolite-free talc in the Gravelly Range, the scale of this relationship permits the use of conventional open-pit mining methods with subsequent upgrading by hand-sorting techniques. Underground mining has been used in the past, but all current Montana talc-mining operations are on the surface. The hand-sorted ore, some of which is shipped overseas, is finely ground or micronized in roller mills and fluid-energy mills. The products are distributed both nationwide and abroad.
