The Homes take Mining Company at Lead, South Dakota has a yearly production of 1,868,741 tons of ore produced from horizontal cut-and-fill stopes and timber cut-and-fill stopes. This production, in addition to the necessary development (drifts and raises), requires 5,168,271 feet of drilling annually. The rock for the most part consists of quartz; mica schist; and cummingtonite schist; and must be considered as relatively hard. Penetration rates average about 15 inches per minute using an operating air pressure of 100 psi. The rock is tough, rather than brittle, and dulling occurs quite rapidly. The average regrind period is approximately 19 feet per regrind using a 1-7/16 inch carbide bit. At the present time, all drilling is accomplished with 2-5/8 inch bore airleg mounted drills, and 2-3/4 inch and 3-inch diameter bore -stopers (raising only). These machines are all direct striking, with 4-1/4 inch chucks. 7/8-inch hexagonal carbon drill steel with forged collars are used in conjunction with 1-7/16 inch multi-use, threaded, carbide bits. 62,793 rods, and 16,234 bits are used to maintain the yearly production. The number of rods noted are the rods that were sent: underground, both new and reconditioned.

The overall success of steep slope (>20°) contour mining is dependent upon many factors. The major factor is the selection of the mining method that best suits the premining site conditions both environmentally and economically. These conditions can be divided into three major categories: 1) Geometric Conditions --machine limitations, slope stability restrictions, erosion capacity, among others; 2) Physical Conditions--material properties, rock strengths, diggability, driving surfaces, among others; 3) Chemical Conditions --acid/base relationships, blending or selective placement of overburden, among others. This paper incorporates these conditions through conceptually modeling compliance oriented contour mining methods; in particular Haulback methods, utilizing: 1) the Front-End Loader (FEL)/Truck; 2) Tractor Scrapers; and 3) Combined FEL-Truck/Scraper. Engineering analyses including machine selection, sequencing, ease of varying production rates, slope requirements (for stability and running surfaces), drainage requirements and many others can be performed after the geometric constraints dictated by in-situ conditions and regulatory requirements have been conceptualized. Once all generalized geometries have been established, reduction to idealized three-dimensional views is achieved. These are then reduced to two-dimensional symbolic models, mainly plan views, but also elevations and sections. Equipment activities and operations are then conveniently overlayed. Without this simple two-dimensional reduction, technology transfer remains awkward and non-analytical.

Energy West Mining operates the Deer Creek and Cottonwood/Trail Mountain coal mines in the Wasatch Plateau about 40 km (25 miles) southwest of Price, UT. The Deer Creek Mine extracts the Upper Blind Canyon seam and the Cottonwood/Trail Mountain Mine extracts the Hiawatha seam 12 to 36 m (40 to 120 ft) below. Both seams average about 2.8 m (9 ft) in thickness. Cover depths exceed 550 m (1,800 ft) in a large portion of the unmined reserve. Stability problems at Deer Creek are mostly due to coal bursts caused by high stresses associated with deep cover and sandstone channels. Most of the bursts have occurred in gate pillars and, to a lesser extent, at the longwall face and during development. The introduction of a two-entry gateroad system with 9-m- (30-ft-) wide yield pillars has been a major factor in controlling and minimizing gate pillar [ ] bursts (Agapito et al., 1988). However, some bursting began to occur in the 9-m- (30-ft-) wide pillars as cover depths reached 550 to 610 m (1,800 to 2,000 ft). This was due to more rapid and higher abutment loading in areas with very strong roof and stiff floor.

INTRODUCTION Morro do Niquel is located near the small town of Pratdáolis in the southwest part of the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, about 300 km in a straight line north of São Paulo and 300 krn west of Belo Horizonte. The deposit is known since 1935. Systematic exploration started, however, only in 1957 and production with one furnace in 1962. Since 1969, after the installation of a second furnace, the mine produces about 2 500 tons of nickel, contained in ferronickel, per year. This production is now consumed totally by the Brazilian steel industry. The "Morro do Niquel" is a serpentinite stock of 900 by 400 m which rises 200 m high above the surrounding metamorphic rocks of Algokian age (see Figure 1). On top of the hill there is a leached barren zone of about 200 by 400 m, generally 20-30 m deep, which consists practically only of a boxwork of quartz colored brown by limonite. Surrounding this zone on the sides of the hill is weathered, decomposed serpentinite which contains about 213 of the economic nickel mineralization. Roughly 113 of the ore reserves lie below the leached overburden representing ore of a different type. The geological map and cross-section, Figure 2, give a clear picture of the occurrence.

INTRODUCTION The Soudan 2 Cavern was completed in 1986 as a physics research laboratory located 713 m below ground in northern Minnesota. A paper in the 1985 RETC proceedings presented the background and planned usage for the cavern, site investigation and rock conditions, contract documents, and a bid summary. This is a follow-up paper describing construction of the cavern. The Soudan 2 excavation, 71.8 m long by 13.9 m wide by 11.6 m high, was excavated by drill and blast methods and mucked by crawler tractor and mine hoist. The excavation sequence consisted of twin top-heading pilot tunnels followed by removal of the top heading pillar and finally the bench. Various blasting designs were used to achieve adequate breakage and acceptable levels of blast damage control at the cavern perimeter. The geologic conditions exposed in the cavern, and the support needs of the rock encountered, are compared to the conditions interpreted from the site investigation. The influence of specific geologic features on cavern performance will be described. Initial support and final lining consisted of full length grouted rockbolts and reinforced and plain shotcrete. Trials were conducted with steel-fiber reinforced shotcrete and microsilica additives. Landusky Mining, Inc. and Zortman Mining, Inc. are two registered Montana Corporations wholly owned by Pegasus Gold, Ltd. of Vancouver, B.C. The Zortman and Landusky Mines are located in the Little Rockies District of central Montana. The Zortman-Landusky mines produced 2,100 kg gold in 1982. A total of 3,250,000 t of ore per year are mined during the period March 1, to September 15, at an average grade of 1.04 gm/t (0.03 oz/t) gold and 13.4 gm/t (0.385 oz/t) silver at a cutoff grade of 0.35 grams of gold/ton (0.01 oz of Au/t) of ore. The stripping ratio during 1983 is anticipated to be 0.75/1 waste to ore. Combined average plant capacity of the two Merrill-Crowe plants is 9,840 lpm (2,600 gpm). The combined heap spray capacity of the two plants approaches 18,900 lpm (5,000 gpm). The mine employs approximately 200 people, about half of these work for the mining companies and the other half for the mining contractor, N. A. Degerstrom of Spokane, Washington. Net profit in 1982 for Zortman and Landusky Mining, Inc. approximated $4,900,000 at an average gold price of $11.40/gm.

Introduction During the past decade a major objective of the process industry has been to use digital computer technology to improve plant operating efficiencies. This objective implied some form of optimization, a concept that has various interpretations depending on the view of the prospective user. For the purpose of this paper, optimization of a process plant is defined as the establishment and setting of plant operating conditions that maximize some mathematical yield function, i.e. maximum profit, minimum residue, etc. Analysis of these objectives and the available design and implementation techniques led to the conclusion that digital computer and optimization techniques are not the stumbling blocks, but rather the development and derivation of the mathematical models of the unit operations and process plants to be optimized. Such models should not only describe the optimized (steady-state) objective, but also how one steers to this state (control algorithm). Due to the multidisciplinary nature of the skills associated with the design and operation of process plants, the development of suitable models by a single discipline, such as the process control engineer, was found to be not only difficult but often impossible, due to budget and human resource limitations. To over-come these limitations, a computer aided design (CAD) tool has been developed. It aims to provide a productivity tool to the various disciplines, at the same time coordinating the technical input from each. The system described is but the starting point in an evolutionary development of a tool that, with use, is becoming more efficient and cost effective to use. Development has become an application engineering activity rather than the preserve of the computer specialist. Project phasing The development of a mathematical description of a process plant requires coordination of information from conceptual design to operation management. The activities required to build and operate a process plant are divided into four basic chronological activities or phases. These activities are often undertaken by different organizations and disciplines. As a result, continuity is often lost with the resultant loss of critical design data. The major activities are considered to be: conceptual and flowsheeting; detailing around the P & ID; building and commissioning; and plant operation. The CAD system described provides a design tool to be used for each of these activities, as well as providing continuity between the activities and the disciplines involved. The heart of the system is the dynamic simulation of the flowsheet. Each of the activities will be discussed, leading to two simple examples that demonstrate the use of the simulator. Figure 1 shows a schematic format of the various activities and the path followed by the dynamic flowsheet simulator in the life of a project. Flowsheet development The prime requirements in the design and develop¬ment of a process flowsheet are • selection of the correct unit operations to achieve the most economic (capital and operating) beneficiation of the specified reserve ; • the sizing of the unit operations to achieve the desired results, as a function of the projected feed rates etc., to handle the time related (dynamics) of the process; and • the production of a set of engineering documents showing the drawn and labeled flowsheet with an equipment list and process specification for each of the unit operations. The question may well be asked at this stage why dynamic flowsheet simulation should be considered when steady state modeling has been found to be adequate to date. With the increases encountered in the cost of capital, one often cannot afford the luxury of designing around the compounding worst case technique. Further, a more accurate design of the control surges can be achieved. No information is lost in that the steady state solution is in fact a subset of the dynamic model. In generalized state space modeling, the differential equations describing the process dynamics are illustrated in the following matrix notation: XDOT=A.X+B.U(1) Y =C.X+D.U(2) where XDOT describes the set of first order derivatives of the system state Vector, and X- is the system state Vector; A - is the system matrix operator which in the general nonlinear case is both a function of X and time ; U- is the process input vector; B - is the input mapping matrix; Y - is the set of observations; C - is the output mapping matrix which maps X - onto Y; and D- maps the input onto the observations. Thus, by time integration of the system dynamic equations, described in (1), the dynamic trajectory away from any set of initial conditions can be deter¬mined. Further, by finding the conditions at which XDOT = 0, the steady state solution can be determined.

Industrial-mineral production contributes on the order of CDN$1.5 billion per year to the economy of Saskatchewan, Canada. Potash is the primary industrial mineral produced in the province, followed by aggregate, sodium sulphate, salt, potassium sulphate, peat, clays, silica sand, calcium-chloride brine, and "clinker." Potentially economic deposits of kaolin, diamond, and building stone are under evaluation. All of the major deposits of commodities discussed here are located south of lat 56°30'N. Most of the locations are presented on Figure 1 POTASH Saskatchewan supplies approximately 30% of the world's demand for potash. Eight conventional underground mines and two solution mines produced an all-time high of more than 13 million metric tonnes of potash (KC1) (8 million tonnes K2O equivalent) in 1997, valued at over CDN$1.4 billion. All of the mines exploit the middle Devonian Prairie Evaporite. The four potash-bearing members of the Prairie Evaporite underlie much of southern Saskatchewan and extend southward into North Dakota and Montana and east- ward into Manitoba (Fig. 2). Halite and anhydrite separate the potassic members. The evaporite beds locally are interrupted by solution structures (anomalous ground). Some of the structures may be related to deep-seated tectonic features.

Introduction Coal mining in Alaska's interior, specifically in the Healy area, began as early as 1918 with the construction of the Alaska Railroad. Mining was originally limited to underground operations but has expanded to entirely surface operations. In 1943, the Usibelli Coal Mine was formed and started developing Alaska's first surface mine east of Suntrana (Usibelli Coal Miner, 1984). Production from the local coal deposits has steadily increased and, in 1978, surface mining of Poker Flats was initiated (Fig. 1). Currently, a 25-m3 (33-cu yd) walking dragline strips two coal seams, using an extended bench on the second pass. In addition, a fleet of trucks and shovels are used for coal removal and some limited overburden stripping. In 1984, a contract was signed between Usibelli Coal Mine and Sun Eel Shipping Co. in 1984. Since then, production has nearly doubled to more than 1.3 Mt/a (1.5 million stpy). This article will discuss geotechnical constraints on mining within the steeply dipping coal deposits that exist within the Poker Flats mining area. Specifically, the article will describe how the mining operation retriggered an historic landslide on the No. 5 coal seam (Fig. 2). And the article tells how a mine plan was developed that allowed the coal to be safely removed without inducing additional movement. Regional geology The coal-bearing group in the Nenana coal field is of Tertiary Age. It is overlain in some areas by several thousand feet of Tertiary gravels - the Nenana Gravels. In areas mined by surface methods, the Nenana Gravels have been eroded off, and up to 30 m (100 ft) of quaternary outwash gravels overlay the coal-bearing formations. The coal-bearing group is divided into five formations: Healy Creek, Sanctuary, Suntrana, Lignite, and Grubstake (Wahrhaftig, 1969). Lignite Creek lies on the north limb of a west plunging anticline. This has brought the Suntrana coal-hearing formations near enough to the surface to allow surface mining. Mining is presently in progress on the south side of Lignite Creek in the Poker Flats area. The coal-bearing formation is cut off to the south by a fault having perhaps several thousand feet of vertical displacement, with the upthrust side to the north. South of this fault, Nenana Gravels are exposed on the surface. The Suntrana Formation contain the minable reserves at Poker Flats. This formation is a repeated sequence of poorly consolidated pebbly sandstone near the bottom, grading through a silty fine sandstone to a footwall clay unit immediately below a coal seam cap. The footwall clays are high plasticity clays to silty clays. It has been reported that they contain 30% to 50% montmorillonite (Usibelli Coal Mine Inc., 1982). There are six coal seams in the Suntrana Formation, No. I (the lower seam) through No. 6. Only the top four seams are currently exposed. No. 3, No. 4, and No. 6 seams are the only mined seams. The No. 5 seam is very thin or not present. Portions of the undisturbed Suntrana Formation are overlain by up to 15 m (50 ft) of Quaternary outwash gravels or recent landslide rubble. The surface is overlain by a very thin layer of muskeg and isolated areas of permafrost. In many areas, the outwash gravels are found immediately below the surface muskeg. Numerous landslides have been documented along the north facing slopes of Lignite Creek (US Geological Survey, 1970, and Wahrhaftig, 1958). These appear to be surficial solifluction or skin flow types of landslides. In addition, deep-seated structurally controlled slides are also evident on both the north and south sides of Lignite Creek. Structural features Premining aerial photographs (Fig. 3) of the Lignite Creek slopes in the Poker Flats area indicate substantial evidence of deep-seated landsliding. The landslides noted in Fig. 3 are both inside and outside of the current mining area. Surface mapping and geologic exploration indicate that the coal seams are dipping out of the slopes within the noted slide areas. It is suspected that, historically, these landslides were triggered by undercutting of the toe of the slopes by Lignite Creek. And sliding it thought to have taken place on one or more of the clay beds underlying the coal seams (Golder, 1985). The slide areas are characterized by semicircular head scarps and slumped topography. Based on the premining photographs, these slides do not appear to have been recently active. However, they are expected to be in a state of only marginal stability. Extensive coal exploration indicates that the primary structural feature within the

We have worked on several flooded pits from coal-mining activities in the former East Germany, as well as ones associated with hard- rock mining, including the B-zone pit discussed in the above technical paper. We found the paper to be a useful summary, but, unfortunately, it failed to give an adequate comparison of the physical limnology of the flooded pits, which is an essential component. While the title suggests that the primary focus of the review is physical limnology, it appears that it is essentially pit-lake chemistry being presented. Physical limnology requires that factors such as fetch, latitude, light penetration, relation to ground water table, methods of flooding and the physical shape of the pits be defined. These physical aspects of a pit interact with the chemical and biological processes taking place in it, all of which contribute to the character of a water body. Few of these physical aspects are presented, however. The conclusion that the authors reach suggests that meromixis may be a condition that would serve as an effective containment mechanism for contaminants in a pit. Although this may be desirable, such limnological conditions are not clearly supported by the data presented for any of the pits. These data should be summarized to facilitate comparison between the same structural units of the pit water - the epi- and metalimnion for example. The thermocline depth is a reflection of the physical forces mixing the water body, and pit dimensions affect these forces. Due to the use of different scales in Figs. 2 through 5, it is difficult to determine whether the thermocline is at the expected depth, because the fetch is not given. Moreover, the status of a water body cannot be determined unless measurements cover a period of at least one year, and depth profiles are completed to represent the entire depth of the pit. This shortcoming is most notable in the case of the Berkeley pit, where data are given for depths of only 20 and 35 m (66 and 115 ft), although the pit is reported to be 242 m (794 ft) deep. Limnological data to define the status of the pit water have to be collected at regular intervals, for the same parameters. The authors present temperature measurements for 1-m (3.3-ft) intervals, but fail to use that interval for other parameters, such as dissolved oxygen or, in some cases, for contaminant concentrations. Furthermore, the profiles for the deepest part of the pit display only part of the picture, because pits are rarely conical. Profiles can be considered to represent the status of a water body only after other stations in the pit have been monitored regularly and the consistency is determined. For example, fresh water, which can enter a pit at any depth, would interfere with the proposed meromictic conditions. Similarly, organic material at the bottom of a pit, such as the fish-waste deposited in the Gunnar pit, contribute to oxygen consumption. Oxygen depletion alone is not indicative of meromixis. It is interesting to note that the Dpit arsenic concentrations could possibly be slightly higher than the B-zone pit concentrations at depth, although this is difficult to determine accurately when a log scale is used for the D-pit and not for the B-zone pit. In our investigations, we noted arsenic removal in the B-zone pit bottom water, which was due to the formation of particles that are relegated to the newly forming sediment in the bottom of the pit. Particle-carrying contaminants form due to a combination of geochemical and biological factors and TSS contributed from erosion of the upper parts of the pit walls, whereas the settling out of particles from the water column is controlled by the physical conditions or turn over, for example. during ice cover in the B-zone pit. Although meromictic conditions for flooded pits may be desirable at decommissioning, this would depend largely on the physical conditions of the pit, because, under no circumstances, would this water be of desirable ground-water quality. Under meromictic conditions, acidity, if an environmental issue, may be reduced by microbial acid-neutralizing activity, and several heavy metals may form more or less stable sulphitic compounds. These may stay suspended in the water if conditions are such that they are not relegated to the sediments, i.e., in the absence of turnover. These processes do not take place in meromictic conditions only, but meromixis does require autochthonous and/or allochthonous organic substrate supplies, which are generated under aerobic conditions. Specific limnological (biological, chemical and physical) features of the pit lake under consideration have to be defined, such that water quality parameters can be predicted, and the objectives of the decommissioning activities, environ-

X. Huang (1997) recently suggested a poroelastic model for simulating the hydraulic fracturing breakdown pressure. His paper began with a discussion questioning Haimson and Fairhurst's (H&F) model. He claimed that the H&F model failed to lead to the Hubbert and Willis (H&W) model as[ a --> 0.] Huang also tried to explain why the H&F model could only work for special types of rock conditions. He pointed out that one possible reason could be that the Terzaghi's effective-stress concept had been adopted. The H&F model (Haimson and Fairhurst, 1969) was derived under the conditions that the borehole wall is fully penetrated (pp = pi) and a drained state is realized (steady pore-pressure field). Cui et al. (1997a) demonstrated that, under drained conditions, the total stresses in the penetrating poroelastic model (identical to the H&F model) degenerate into their counterparts in the elastic model (identical to the H&W model) as [a -- 0.] However, the effective-stress conditions are different for both of these models, because different pore-pressure conditions at the borehole wall were adopted. In the H&W model, p = po was assumed, i.e., the pore pressure field is not disturbed; but pp = pi was assumed in the H&F model. Assuming that Terzaghi's effective-stress controls tensile failure (that was the hypothesis adopted in both the H&F and the H&W models), only the following two special drained poroelastic cases may degenerate into the H&W model for very small a: • when the pore pressure at the borehole wall remains at the same level as the virgin pore pressure for a penetrating model and when the borehole wall is simply impermeable (i.e., the nonpenetrating model, Cui et al., 1997b). Therefore, simply setting a = 0 in the H&F model generally does not lead to the same problem described by the H&W model. On the other hand, when the porepressure boundary conditions do not correspond to the ones in the H&W model, a degeneration of the poroelastic model to the H&W model as [a – 0] should be questionable. The pore pressure at the borehole wall is generally dependent on the injection-fluid pressure and the penetrating conditions at the borehole wall, such as the existence of a filter-cake. For an impermeable wall, pp is independent of Pi, and it is basically an unknown [(how¬ever, pp -- po as t --oo).] For a fully permeable wall, pp is the same as Pi. Between these two extremes, pp should be a function of p; and the permeable condition of the borehole wall, which may be dependent of the leak-off coefficient cf. (the range of cf is from 0 to 1). Theoretically, for a rock with low permeability, a penetrating borehole wall is still possible. For saturated porous materials with very low values of a, poroelasticity shows that a pore pressure will be built up due to the stress concentration subjected to a nonhydrostatic in situ stress field (Cheng et al., 1993). This phenomenon is known as the Skempton effect. The variation of the pore pressure may be evaluated by [AP = 3 B(A rr + 06ee + A (Y,,)] (1) where B is the Skempton pore pressure coefficient. This pore pressure variation dissipates as time increases (it is totally gone as the drained state is approached). The rate of the dissipation mainly rely on the permeability of the formation. The dissipation is very slow for tight formations because their permeability is very low, and it is fast for rocks of high permeability. According to our analyses, the time period for this process could be from seconds (for sandstone's) to a couple of days (for stales). One possible reason that the H&C model did not agree well with the experimental results for rocks with low permeability might be that the time interval between the application of the loading and the fluid injection had not been long enough for the dissipation of the Skempton effect. The effective-stress law basically defines how much pore pressure contributes to the total stress. The difference between Terzaghi's effective stress and Biot's effective stress is that 100% of the pore pressure contributes to the total stress in Terzaghi's definition, while only a certain portion of the pore pressure ((ap) goes to the total stress in Biot's definition. Therefore, when the pore pressure at the boretole wall (pp) is determined according to Biot's effective-stress law, app in the total tangential stress is attributed to the pore pressure. Minerals for electronic and optical uses divide easily into two sections: 1) quartz and 2) minerals other than quartz. QUARTZ The properties of quartz crystal that make it useful for radio communications were discovered in 1918. Since that time, an in¬dustry for the mining and processing of natural quartz crystal has grown, matured, and been almost entirely replaced by new tech¬nology. The new technology still involves quartz crystal, but ma¬terial that is grown rather than mined. An economic summary of the commercial growing of quartz crystals has a place in a handbook directed to the mineral engi¬neering industry because quartz crystals have long been an impor¬tant commercial mineral, and the raw material for cultured quartz - ¬that is to say, quartz crystals grown through the ingenuity of man - is still natural quartz. Nearly all the natural crystals that have been used for elec¬tronics and optics came from Brazil. The larger pieces which met rigorous standards of quality were used for electronic and, to a lesser extent, optical components. Smaller pieces and fragments were used for vitreous silica. The need for high quality material in quantity led to US government sponsored research and exploration programs in the 1940s. No deposits meeting the very rigid requirements for electronic-grade quartz were found, but other projects resulted in the development of a process for the factory growth of beautiful crystals of prescribed shape, size, and quality. Domestic deposits of appropriate quality were identified to use as raw materials for the quartz culturing process. The development of the cultured quartz crystal illustrates the success that technology can have in adapting a product of the mine to increasingly sophisticated uses. A remarkable achievement per¬haps, but foreshadowed by experiments by Giorgio Spezia (1908), an Italian geologist studying the relative effects of temperature and alkaline environment on the solubility of quartz. Modem radio equipment is most often controlled as to fre¬quency by the presence in the circuit of a separately added crystal¬ - the 1918 discovery responsible for the existence and growth of the quartz industry. The crystal is quartz, but this component is a carefully oriented and prepared slice from a crystal, but not a crystal as recognized by a rock hound or seen in a museum. How quartz operates to control frequencies is not a proper subject for a handbook on industrial minerals, and references should be consulted (Cady, 1964, Mason, 1964). Quartz belongs to a class of materials called dielectrics: those that do not conduct an electric current but permit electric fields to exist and act across them. Quartz shows the piezoelectric effect, which means that when a quartz plate is mechanically deformed against its natural stiffness, one of its surfaces becomes negatively charged, the other positively charged. When the plate is released quickly from the stress, the charges disappear as the plate regains its original shape, but because of mechanical momentum the plate deforms in the opposite direction (to a lesser amount) and the surfaces correspondingly become charged in the opposite direction. By thinly coating the two surfaces with metal and attaching flexible wires, these charges can be brought into an electronic circuit. If the surfaces are suddenly electrically charged by movement of current through the wires, the converse piezoelectric effect occurs and the plate deforms. Carry the thought further and it is realized that an alternating current flowing through the wires responds to the mechanical oscillation. By controlling the thickness of the plate, its mechanical vibration frequency can be varied through a wide range. One type of quartz plate, the AT-cut, has a precisely defined orientation with respect to the crystallographic axes of the crystal and vibrates on a microscopic scale much as a book would deform when placed flat on a table and the top cover moved parallel back and forth with the hand. At least 17 other orientations have been studied, some of which have preferred uses in various applications (Cady, 1964). The quartz crystal industry is composed of three main segments (excluding fused quartz and quartz used for optical purposes): 1. Natural electronic-grade quartz crystals. Mined quartz suitable for fabrication into piezoelectric units. Zlobik (1981a) esti¬mated the waste to ore ratio at 1:1000 to 1000 000, depending upon the deposit. 2. Lasca. Mined quartz usable as feedstock in the production of cultured quartz. Approximately 0.63 kg of lasca are required to produce 0.45 kg of cultured quartz. 3. Cultured quartz. Cultured quartz is produced from lasca feed¬stock in a process of crystal growth in an autoclave under conditions of heat, pressure, and time. It is estimated that 0.45 kg of cultured quartz is equivalent to 1.4 to 4.5 kg of natural quartz crystal in yield of commercial quartz suitable for slicing into piezoelectric units. The production data of many mines have not reconciled geostatistical estimations based on exploration and development drilling. The discrepancies in recovered metals are sometimes as large as 30%. A number of factors are responsible for such unpleasant outcomes. A major cause, however, is the lack of geological controls in the implementation of geostatistical techniques. Geological modeling establishes geological constraints and mineralization/ore envelopes. Geological constraints are usually established through drill hole interpretation. Mineralization and ore envelopes have been delineated manually based on assay grades. The issues associated with manual methods are: •Time requirements . •Inconsistent dilution. •Uncontrollable implementation variance. Although the time issue may not be a big concern for some companies, the other two have been responsible for many undesired estimation errors. A new geostatistical approach described in this study is designed on the basis of indicator and ordinary kriging. The central component of the method is the procedure for automatic delineation of mineralization and ore envelopes. The method, referred to as probability assigned constrained kriging (PACK), is demonstrated on a Carlin-type gold deposit. The estimation results are compared to blast-hole based production panels, showing that the estimated tonnage is about 2.1 % higher than the actual production, and the average grade is about 2.4% lower.

Silica in the form of sand and sandstone is one of the most common, and at the same time, unique industrial minerals. Found in every rock type of every geologic age and virtually everywhere in the world, silica is used in products that touch just about every aspect of daily life. Imagine a world in the 1990s without computer chips, fiber optics, or glass, and you have just begun to understand how important silica is to the quality of life we enjoy. The elements silicon (Si) and oxygen (0) comprise roughly 60% of the earth's lithosphere to a depth of about 16 km. The crystal structure of silicon dioxide consists of one atom of silicon bonded to four surrounding atoms of oxygen to form a three-dimensional network of SiO, tetrahedra. This network makes up the mineral quartz (Murphy and Henderson, 1983), the most common detrital mineral in most sandstones. Quartz is also a major constituent of many igneous and metamorphic rocks and is widespread as a siliceous cementing agent in various rock types. Although quartz is common, sandstones, quartzites, and pegmatites and the unconsolidated sediments derived from them that have a silica content high enough and pure enough to meet today's market demands for quality and consistency are not common. USES AND SPECIFICATIONS Silica sand that is mined and processed for industrial uses must conform to the chemical and physical specifications set by customers. In the United States almost half of the silica sand produced is used in the manufacture of glass. Other important products include foundry sand, ground silica, blasting sand, and fracturing sand. Glass Sand Silica is the principal glass-forming oxide in a glass batch. Glass manufacturers develop model specifications for each source of silica sand used. These specifications broadly define the limits and ranges for chemical and physical properties of the sand and are used by the manufacturer in calculating the desired batch mix or formula. Some specifications may be critical to a glassmaker and require very stringent limits on the quantity of impurities in the sand. For example, the total iron oxide content of a batch is extremely crucial when making white or flint glasses (Mills, 1983). Iron is present in almost every raw material used in a glass batch and must be carefully controlled in order to obtain a consistent color in the finished product. It is difficult, however, for a raw material supplier to tightly control the chemistry of a naturally occurring material such as silica sand. To a great extent the commercial quality of a sand is determined by its geologic history. Realizing this, glass producers tailor their model specifications to each source of approved material. In general, a glass company is concerned most about the consistency of raw materials on a day-to-day basis. Soda-lime-silica glass was the earliest type of manmade glass (Baker-Can, 1967) and still accounts for most of the glass manufactured for commercial use today (Mills, 1983). It is relatively easy to melt and shape and is less expensive per ton to produce than most other types of glass (Baker-Can, 1967). Soda-lime-silica glass is used in fabricating containers, flat glass products, incandescent and fluorescent lamps, glass fiber, and many other products. Heavy minerals such as ilmenite, leucoxene, kyanite, and zircon are impurities on which strict limits are placed for a glass batch. Because of their refractory nature they either do not melt or only partially melt, which results in stones or feathers in finished glass. Aluminosilicates such as kyanite also contribute unwanted alumina to the batch as they partially melt. Limits are especially rigid for refractory mineral grains coarser than 0.60 to 0.425 mm (30 to 40 mesh). [Tables 1 and 2] present typical specifications for silica sand used in flat glass and container glass products. The percentages shown represent an average of many companies7 specifications.

INTRODUCTION Application Measurement of rock deformation is essential to stability and behavioral monitoring of underground openings. The difficulties of obtaining adequate sample distribution, density, and orientation can frequently be overcome by the use of single and multiple position borehole extensometers. In its simplest form, a borehole extensometer consists of an instrument head, usually anchored in the collar of a borehole, and a number of in-hole anchors, each of which is fixed in place at a known distance from the collar. As rock adjacent to the borehole deforms, the component parallel to the borehole direction causes a distance change between adjacent in-hole anchors, as well as a distance change between individual anchors and the instrument head. These changes are measured by means of a mechanical link (usually wire or rod) extending to the instrument head from each anchor. The resulting data can be used to compute the distribution, magnitude, rate, and acceleration of deformation in the material intersected by the extensometer's borehole. Wire Vs. Rod Extensometers Since the early 1960s myriad varieties of borehole extensometers have become available through the combination of various special features of two basic instruments, the wire and rod versions of borehole extensometers. Recent publications have recommended shallow depth limitations for wire extensometers, and favor rod extensometers for a broad range of borehole inclinations and depths. There are three main reasons for using a deep wire system: its cost effectiveness; the fact that tremendous depth means tremendous rod weight which will cause the rod to buckle or rub against the borehole or casing wall; and users' attitude and proper understanding of how to install and apply a wire-type extensometer. Here experience plays a big role. Over the years, many have learned the hard way that untensioned rod extensometers are simple and inherently inexpensive, but limited to vertical up holes where sensitivity is not influenced by friction between the rod elements and the borehole wall or protective conduit, the inertia of the rod elements, or the direction of the movement to be measured. In deep, horizontal, or inclined holes, and in instances where compressive as well as tensile strains or displacements are anticipated, tensioned rod or wire systems are preferred. System Components Borehole extensometers are made up of at least the following five principal components: the instrument head; the collar anchor assembly; the downhole system of anchors and rods or wires; the signal cable if the head is equipped for electronic readout; and the readout apparatus, whether mechanical or electronic. These components are shown in Fig. 1. Borehole Requirements Most extensometers are designed for installation in nominal 75 to 57-mm (3.0 to 2.25-in.) diam drill holes. Either a diamond drill or a percussion drill hole is satisfactory, provided the variation in drill-hole diameter is within the tolerance of the standard anchor design. The basic system may be modified for other hole diameters by changing the dimensions of the collar anchor and downhole anchor assemblies. Some instrument heads and collar anchor assemblies require enlarged borehole collars, though usually not over 150 mm (6 in.) for a depth of 1 m (3 ft). It is desirable, although not essential, that holes be free-draining. Holes must be clean and free of debris before installation. Depth/Orientation of Extensometer Boreholes Extensometers are designed to measure axial strain components in the instrumented drill hole. As the drill hole is axially deformed, the distances between individual downhole anchors and the instrument head change, as do the distances between adjacent anchors. The distance changes measured by a multiple position borehole extensometer, for example, are reduced to functions of time, hole depth, anchor position, or other parameters of significance in terms of the structure under investigation.

Many papers 'have been publihed on the role of the bacterium.Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in the oxidation of reduced sulfur compounds, and years of research have established the following environmental factors, which influence biological oxidation. 1. Oxygen is required for the oxidation of reduced sulfur compounds to the sulfate form. Sufficient oxygen. is available from the air, consequently, it is of importance to get the air to the bacteria. 2. The bacteria are active in the pH range 1.4 3.5. Maximum activity occurs at pH 2..0 - 2.8. 3. -In order to allow the bacterial populations to expand, certain essential nutrients must be available. Nitrogen has to be supplied for the production of body protein, and ammonia is the source most readily accepted by the bacteria. Carbon dioxide is the only utilizable source of carbon and the small amounts available in air are the primary source of this element. Small amounts of phosphate, manganese,, potassium,. calcium. and magnesium are also required. These trace minerals are available from the water and host rock in sufficient quantities. 4. Water is required as a carrier for the oxygen carbon dioxide and other nutrients, as-well as a solvent for the metallic sulfates produced. The bacteria are motile and the water allows the bacterial populations to spread:: bacterial activity ceases if the equilibrium relative humidity drops below 100%. 5.-optimum bacterial activity occurs at temperatures of 34 - 35°.C (93 -.95° F). All activity ceases above 45° C. At lower temperatures, activity its dramatically decreased, but there is still a significant amount at 10 - 11° C.- Thiobacillus ferruoxidans has been isolated from a mine with a year round temperature of 3° C. 6. Unpublished results from our laboratory show that biological leach ore oxidation takes place during the rest periods at the same rate as during the wet leaching periods providing there is a film of moisture remaining around the particles. Optimum conditions can be readily achieved in the laboratory, but application of our laboratory knowledge to commercial leaching dumps is riot as simple. Attempts to achieve improved environmental conditions for the bacteria in leaching dumps would require substantial capital investment and careful planning of leaching operations. This paper

INTRODUCTION This work is a continuation of the preparatory study by Rustan and Stöckel 1979 (3) and (4) of the possibilities to introduce automatic mine ventilation in Swedish mines and construction works. The preparatory study has been financed by the Swedish Board of Technical Development. In the study it was recommended that an automatic step by step control of the fans near the working place due to diesel exhaust emission would be the best solution. A more advanced alternative would be to regulate the fresh air continuously in proportion to the contamination. The latter alternative has been studied by Boliden Mineral Co in the Udden mine. In this study it was found that the air supply could be regulated continuously but it was very important where the sensors feeling the contamination were placed. An intense study of the environment underground is now being planned by our division together with specialists from the National Board of Health and Safety, The Swedish Work Environment Fund, LKAB and the local Governmental Inspection of the Workers Safety. Different gases, radon, dust, airspeed, moisture temperature and pressure is planned to be measured continuously and correlation between the parameters is going to be established to decide the best measurement parameters for regulating the system. The best situation of sensors is also going to be studied. Despite this work hasn't been done yet this paper covers some of the problems which could be encounted with continuous regulation. In this report the environment has been studied during the test with step by step regulation of fans by radio. Diesel vehicles are the largest polluters under ground in Swedish mines and we have therefore suggested that the large diesel vehicles should regulate the fans. The goal of this study has therefore been to find how active diesel vehicles should be able to start and stop gallery fans at both intake and return air. In this paper different methods for activating fans are discussed. Then the best methods are chosen and tested in the mine. In this study we have found that changes of temperature is a cheap and effective method to start and stop cross cut fans in sublevel caving and radio signals seem to be an attractive system for start and stop of gallery fans. This work has been done in close collaboration between LKAB in Kiruna and the University of Luleå - Division of Electronics and Division of Mining and Rock Excavation. A reference group for the project has been established with ventilation experts from the mines, representatives for the local mine worker's unions and authorities from the local Governmental Inspection of the Workers Safety. VENTILATION SYSTEM STUDIED In the project the ventilation system at LKAB in Kiruna has been studied. The mining method used is sublevel caving with 9-13 m slice height. The air is heated winter time over ground by hot water heat exchanger. The main fans are pushing air down to a main distribution level along the 4000 m long and about 100 m wide orebody. From the distribution level, air is taken through shafts down to the sublevels, where it is pushed through the levels by local gallery fans on both intake and return side, see fig 1. The air ( ~ 8 m3/s) is moving freely through the gallery head. The cross cuts are ventilated with smaller fans, diameter 500 mm, and flexible duct, see fig 2. The aim of this study has been to study how to start and stop gallery- and cross fans and examine the environment when the fans are stopped . In Sweden there are no regulations telling that a minimum of air amount must be supplied. Instead the hygienic limits must be fullfilled.

The effects of artificial weathering on the mechanical properties of the Loyalhanna sandstone have been investigated. Weathering was simulated in the laboratory by subjecting cylin- drical specimens of rock to alternate cycles of wetting and drying (in distilled water at 2O0C 2 5OC and in an electric oven at 105OC t 1°C, respectively). The total number of cycles was 100 and the geomechanical characteristics of the altered material were determined through uniaxial compressive and indirect tensile ("Brazilian") tests, with the determination of axial and trans- verse strains and monitoring of acoustic emission activity (rate and total event count). Moisture content and weight loss data were collected after each cycle and the mechanical parameters (unconfined strength, indirect tensile strength, young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, permanent set and AE/MS activity) were determined for unweathered specimens and after 10, 20, 50 and 100 cycles of wetting and drying. Hypotheses for the effect of weathering on the geomechanical properties of the Loyalhanna sandstone are proposed as reinforced by petrographic analyses carried out for the different stages of artificial weathering. A methodology for assessing the degree of physical weathering of rocks is proposed based on the number of wetting and drying cycles.

The win theme of this session is Unique Material Handing Systems. The theme was selected because of two major factors. 1. Accomplishments of unique character manage to attract interest regardless of their age. 2. There is much to be learned from pioneering efforts of the past as they are the stepping stones to technological development. Thus, 2-1/2 years after completion, the engineering feat of Oroville Dam still looms large let us take a close look at this project to see what made it unique. To begin with, it established a number of firsts: At 770 feet it was the highest earth fill dam in the world. At $121 million dollars, it was the largest ever United States construction project (Civil). At 80 million cubic yards it had the largest earth volume of any dam in the world. The extensive use of belt conveyors for this application had never before been tried. The use of a high capacity bucket wheel-excavator with shiftable belt conveyors had never before been utilized as a con¬tractor's tool. The principal of the "integral train" was applied most effectively whereby up to 220,000 tons of material-was transported daily some 14 miles. To achieve optimum economics a number of technical breakthroughs were necessary. The suppliers of major commercial components worked hand-in-hand with system engineers to develop new machinery necessary for the highly mobile characteristics of the systems, viz., single pulley drives delivering 2000 horsepower, 1000 horsepower right-angle shaft-mounted reducers, across the line starting of 1000 horsepower squirrel cage motors, 10 miles of steel chord conveyor belts with belt tensions up to 150,000 pounds, aircraft-type disc brakes, hydraulic take-ups, train loading at a rate of 25,000 tons per hour, automatic train indexing for rotary dumping at 10,000 tons per hour, roll-over car dumping without uncoupling cars, shifting 7500 ft. long conveyors up to 300 feet laterally without disassembly. These are some of the superlatives that have made the Oroville Dam project unique. The measure of its success is demonstrated by the results.
