INTRODUCTION Shotcrete behavior observed in subway tunnel construction in the U. S. has been primarily in blocky or blocky and seamy rock in which rock loads develop from the self weight of individual rock blocks that tend to loosen from the wall and roof of the opening. Such conditions can be classed as loosening ground, in contrast to squeezing ground in which high pressures are generated on the tunnel lining with time as the ground creeps under the natural ground stresses. In the philosophy often associated with the New Austrian Tunneling method, emphasis is placed on the use of shotcrete and other support elements in squeezing, highly stressed ground, in which the support system is designed to allow controlled movements so that high lining stresses do not develop. The McLaughlin Mine is a world class epithermal gold deposit located in the coastal thrust fault of Northern California, U.S.A. Homestake adopted a proactive strategy in the permitting of the Mine. Extensive environmental baseline studies were undertaken. Engineering and process alternatives were evaluated for environmental impact along with other factors. A unique pressure oxidation process was selected. Screening studies were conducted as a basis for the selection of waste rock and tailings disposal sites. Project engineering and permitting were fast tracked. Construction required eighteen months, and the first gold bar was poured in March of 1985, six years after the initial discovery. Project facilities are designed and operated so as to minimize environmental impacts. A comprehensive monitoring program demonstrates permit compliance. Reclamation of the site is ongoing throughout the Mine's twenty year life. Nonmined lands are managed to maximize wildlife habitat value.

Flotation of low grade Ni ores with serpentinite host rock tend to yield low recoveries of Ni With high MgO contents in the concentrate. The recovery can be enhanced by optimizing the sub-processes in the pulp and in the froth. The new OF-100 flotation cell has been designed to be adaptable to different feed fineness (Coarse, Fine). The losses can according the research conducted at Outokumpu's Hitura plant be substantially decreased by OF-100's new rotor and stator design and froth zone geometry. The froth residence time is used to adapt for feed particle size changes measured by the Outokumpu PSI- 200. Models for the behaviour of different particle Sizes in the sub-processes have been developed. The modified froth zone geometry and the capability of maintaining a froth of desired thickness allows efficient washing of the obtained concentrate producing low levels of MgO.

Decisions affecting ground control design require detailed knowledge of roof rock geology. This is especially true when weak roof materials and anomalies create hazardous conditions and. if not properly supported, result in roof falls. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a system to evaluate geological conditions by using a roof drill that will provide an estimate of the compressive strength of the roof rock in real time. Through the use of sensors and a microcomputer on the roof drill critical drilling parameters can be interpreted and analyzed almost instantaneously, making it possible to inform an operator of hazardous roof conditions such as voids and changes in strata during the drilling process. Geotechnical data can be downloaded to a portable semiconductor memory device, which is brought to the surface so that data can be directly accessed with a personal computer for further analysis. Results from field tests are presented.

Pit slope designs at Nickel Plate Mine have used relatively steep interim and final wall slopes of 60 degrees overall. The rock is unusually strong and tough with most discontinuity sets being steeply dipping. An integrated program of monitoring and drainage has been used. Stopes of large extent which are generally unsupported occur on the property. For the most part, no deterioration of the stability of the stopes has occurred over the last 30 or more years. Mining methods through these areas have used a combination of fill s placed via VCR drop raises and crater blasting of the backs. One of the major challenges in mining through the stope areas is to maintain slope stability conditions and to reduce dilution of the higher value ore zones occurring immediately around the stope areas. The paper discusses geology, slope stability and mining methods at Nickel Plate Mine.

The objective of this study is to provide potential users of booster fans in coal mines with the necessary information on monitoring and control of fans and environmental factors. The guide-lines listed in this paper were formulated based on the current practice of mine monitoring, the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations on environmental monitoring, and the United Kingdom's National Coal Board recommendations on the use of booster fans. The principles involved in the design of booster fans as well as the provisions needed to guarantee a safe operation of these units, are illustrated by means of an example problem. The example includes a summary of costs for two ventilation systems: a conventional surface fan system and a fully automated booster fan alternative. A comparison of these costs showed that significant gains may be attained by selecting a combined surface-booster fan strategy over a conventional surface fan alternative.

Computer based techniques for solving the Ultimate Pit Limit Problem have appeared in mining literature since the early 1960's. The majority of papers pertaining to this subject can be partitioned into one of two categories: discussion of the pros and cons of a particular algorithm, or a case study presenting specific applications of an algorithm. Subsequently, there has a1 so been considerable debate concerning the best techniques between, essentially, two camps: those favoring the moving cones techniques, and those favoring the techniques which yield true optimal pit designs. The purpose of this paper is not to add to this debate, but rather to present a few new ideas (partially a new look at an old idea), which can be easily implemented to noticeably improve any ultimate pit limit approach independent of the particular algorithm used. These ideas fall under the heading of "bounding the optimum" (Barnes and Johnson, 1980).

This paper presents the basics of EPA’s Hazard Ranking System (HRS), which is used to evaluate sites for possible inclusion on the Superfund National Priorities List (NPL). The paper describes the surface water, ground water, air, and soil exposure pathways and how they are applied to mining sites. Key factors contributing to the site score include the likelihood of a release, waste characteristics, and the targets for each pathway. Waste volumes, definitions of landfills versus surface impoundments, and background concentrations are of particular importance to mining and smelting sites. Because of the presence of metals, large waste volumes, and observable releases, mining and smelting sites often receive high enough scores to be proposed for the NPL based on a single path-way. Neverthess, owners and operators can take steps to reduce the risk of being scored, and to reduce the potential for high scores.

This paper describes the development and testing of the RAMEX excavation system. Incorporating a synergy of low velocity, high energy impact and kerf cutting, this machine offers a competitive alternative to drilling and blasting in hard rock. It is a boom mining machine that incorporates the features of a lightweight roadheader and it can mine nearly any shape opening in hard rock. The RAMEX Tunneler has been developed to satisfy industry demands for a non-explosive, flexible, continuous and rapid underground rock excavation system. It will produce minimum ground vibration in the urban environment and allow the flexibility necessary for thin seam mining conditions. It will also reduce initial ground support costs and has a minimum impact on rock integrity. Developed by RAMEX Systems with cooperative research provided by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, this system, could produce the next step in the continuing evolution of mechanical mining systems.

Conventional clean coal technologies which consist of coarse coal cleaning by gravity methods and treatment of natural fines by flotation can only remove a portion of the pyritic sulfur and ash in the coal. Higher (+90%) pyritic sulfur rejection is attainable when coals are ground to ultrafine sizes to enhance liberation of the mineral matter and then cleaned. However, cleaning of coal at very fine sizes poses a number of unsolved problems, the chief one being the loss of cleaning efficiency. This, of course, means that liberation of pyrites does not always equal its rejection. In addition, the dewatering of fine- cleaned coal, and its handling, transportation, and acceptability to the utility industry a1 so pose considerable technical and economic problems, especially when compared to the FGD alternative. In this paper, the results of a research study on airborne dust transport in a full scale simulated longwall face are presented. The simulated longwall face was set up in the Lake Lynn Laboratory mine of the U.S. Bureau of Mines to conduct experiments under controlled conditions. The controlled parameters in the experiments were the dust dispersion rate, dust size distribution, density of the dust, air velocity, and the rate of travel of the dust generating source. The analyses of the experimental results on mass concentrations, particle size distributions, and real-time respirable dust concentrations are discussed. There are definite spatio-temporal trends between the location of the shearer, the concentration at any location in the face, and the dust generation rates. The size-consist and density characteristics of the source dust, the air velocity in the face, and the air leakage into the gobs all affect the concentration.

Sixty countries around the world mine about 5000 million tonnes of coal annually and simultaneously produce nearly 25 million tonnes (36.8 Gm3) [One tonne of methane at a temperature of 15°C and a pressure of 760 mm of mercury has a volume of 1471 cubic meters.] of methane. Many of these coal mines are very gassy and require methane drainage prior to mining as well as during mining. In spite of significant differences in the geology and reservoir properties of the coal seams, several methane drainage techniques have found universal application. The paper describes various techniques currently in use and their efficiency in recovering methane from mines. It appears that the application of state-of-the-art techniques, developed mostly in the U.S.A., can considerably increase the efficiency of methane recovery and improve the safety of mines throughout the world.

During the past decade, researchers at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University have worked to develop a novel flotation process for treating very fine particles. This process, which is now commonly known as [microbubble column flotation] (MCF), has been shown to be very effective in a number of applications related to fine coal processing. These applications include the retrofit of existing preparation plant circuits and the recovery of additional coal fines from refuse streams. In addition, work conducted under the sponsorship of the United States Department of Energy indicates that the MCF process is capable of producing superclean and ultraclean coals from many eastern U.S. coals. This paper describes some of the basic problems associated with fine particle flotation and the design and operational features of the MCF process used to minimize these problems. Also presented are the results of ongoing pilot- and field-testing programs.

The disposal of plant tailings in a safe and environmentally acceptable manner has taken on increased importance throughout the world, across all types of mineral beneficiation plants. In the U.S. plant life span, expansions and new plants in the current robust mineral markets are faced with environmental pressures to minimize the use of land for disposal by maximizing existing tailings pond capacity. The combination of many drivers from economic to environmental have brought paste thickeners into the coal industry (PasteThick 2007) Thickening tailings to a more concentrated slurry is a common step in the disposal flow sheet. Thickening to a non-settling ?paste?, also called ?thickened tails? or ?tailings stacking?, is a relatively recent development. This paper describes the paste thickener as an alternative for dewatering a fine coal refuse (tailings) stream for deposit as a paste. Initial operating results of the paste thickener are discussed.

The paper will discuss the successful construction of the largest dollar value ($194.5 million, U.S.) TARP (Tunnel and Reservoir Plan) project built to date for the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. The mining and lining of the 18.5km (11.54 miles) tunnels will be emphasized. The tunnels were driven utilizing three TBMs ranging in size from 9.85m (32.33 ft) to 3.70m (12.16 ft) in diameter. The operations surrounding the 11,546m (37,876 ft) long 9.85m (32.33 ft) diameter tunnel will be highlighted. A total system concept was utilized to attain mining rates up to 29.3m (96 ft) per shift and lining productions of 58.5m (192 ft) per day. The reliability of these systems was instrumental in the completion of the project more than a year ahead of schedule.

A joint research program between the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines and Cyprus-Yampa Valley Coal Company is being conducted at the Foidel Creek Mine, Oak Creek, Colorado. This program goal is to study the effects of state-of-the-art, high-speed, automated longwall mining on health and safety, and primarily, ground stability under various geological conditions. The Bureau installed an automated data monitoring system, known as the Ground Control Management System (GCMS), to monitor in real-time the effect of rapid mining on pillar and face loading, stress redistribution in and around the longwall panel, and caving characteristics of the roof. The Bureau's GCMS, combined with the company's existing monitoring systems, which include environmental monitoring, a computer programmable conveyor belt system, and gamma ray roof control thickness indicators, has been effectively used to improve safety at the face, increase productivity, and reduce production costs.

"Phosphate beneficiation in Florida generates more than one tonne of phosphatic clay, or slime, per tonne of phosphate rock produced. Since the start of the practice of large-scale washing and desliming for phosphate beneficiation, more than 2 Gt of slime has accumulated, containing approximately 600 Mt of phosphate rock, 600 kt of rare earth elements (REEs) and 80 million kilograms of uranium. The recovery of these valuable elements from the phosphatic clay is one of the most challenging endeavors in mineral processing, because the clay is extremely dilute, with an average solids concentration of 3 percent, and fine in size, with more than 50 percent having particle size smaller than 2 µm, and it contains nearly 50 percent clay minerals as well as large amounts of magnesium, iron and aluminum. With industry support and under funding from the Critical Materials Institute, the Florida Industrial and Phosphate Research Institute in conjunction with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory undertook the task to recover phosphorus, rare earths and uranium from Florida phosphatic clay. This paper presents the results from the preliminary testing of two approaches. The first approach involves three-stage cycloning using cyclones with diameters of 12.4 cm (5 in.), 5.08 cm (2 in.) and 2.54 cm (1 in.), respectively, to remove clay minerals followed by flotation and leaching. The second approach is a two-step leaching process. In the first step, selective leaching was conducted to remove magnesium, thus allowing the production of phosphoric acid suitable for the manufacture of diammonium phosphate (DAP) in the second leaching step. The results showed that multistage cycloning with small cyclones is necessary to remove clay minerals. Selective leaching at about pH 3.2 using sulfuric acid was found to be effective for removing more than 80 percent of magnesium from the feed with minimal loss of phosphorus.IntroductionFlorida phosphate ore, or “matrix,” as it is called locally, contains three different mineral groups that have to be separated from each other: (1) phosphate minerals, (2) clay minerals and (3) quartz, or sand. As mined, the phosphate and sand particles are embedded in compacted mud, or clay-balls. Before separation can begin, all of the particles must be liberated from the matrix of mud. The very first unit operation in the beneficiation process is to disaggregate the various particles. This actually starts while the matrix is flowing through the multimile pipeline from the mine to the beneficiation plant. While in the pipeline, the matrix is exposed to shear forces as it passes through the various centrifugal pumps along the pipeline. These intense shear forces cause a significant percentage of the sand and phosphate particles to be liberated from the clay-balls by the time they arrive at the plant. Once they reach the plant, the first goal is to finish disaggregating the clay, and follow that by making a size separation at 1 mm. This processing is conducted in the washer, consisting of a large rotating trammel screen and a few stages of log washer, screens and hydrocyclones. In all of the currently operating beneficiation plants, the washer is a large structure that receives the matrix, screens it and then discharges a pebble phosphate product sized larger than 1.0 mm and a slurry of liberated clay, sand and phosphate particles that are smaller than 1.0 mm."

This paper discusses the subject of "Improving Contracting Methods" from the owners point of view, particularly the public. An overview is given of the work of the U.S. National Committee on Tunneling Technology and some apparent results of the implementation of these recommendations or lack thereof. Selected recommendations that are not being implemented are discussed as to the the desirability and the possible impact of their implementation. Impediments to acceptance of the recommendations are identified and solutions proposed. The difference in the flexibility, attitudes and approaches of owners, public, quasi-public and private, toward improving contracting methods are discussed. Particular emphasis is given to the fact that the onus to improve is on the owner because they usually develop the contractual language or at least have the final decision on its content and are or should be an equal party to the contract during its administration.

It is common practice in Appalachia, when extending the life of an existing mine, to acquire the adjacent reserves and extend the existing mine into it. Also, often the existing mine is renovated to accommodate the new conditions. The existing mining system and the track and belt haulage systems may be modified while the new property is integrated into the old one. All of these changes create new constraints for the mine ventilation system (M.V.S.) that require proper planning and control procedures. The authors describe and present the study that was carried out for the ventilation system of a newly expanded underground coal mine located in the Appalachian coal region. Discussed first is the process of correcting the ventilation system of the existing mine. Then, some of the stages of controlling the expanded system are discussed. Finally, numerical data for these steps are presented.
