Service vehicles, often called support vehicles or auxiliary vehicles, are used in secondary functions to support production activities such as loading, drilling, and timbering. Probably the most common support vehicles are the personnel carriers used to move miners to and from work areas. Utility designs are used to transport supplies and various less mobile equipment. Specific application designs are used for special work such as explosives transportation and loading, equipment maintenance, and equipment lubrication. PERSONNEL CARRIERS Personnel carriers are available in a wide variety of sizes and configurations. Some are two-wheel drive, though most are four-wheel drive. Smaller versions carry at least two men and usually have sufficient capacity to carry a small payload of supplies or equip¬ment. The American Motor's 05 Jeep, equipped with an optional diesel engine, has been adapted successfully for this light duty. Larger personnel carriers with ca¬pacities of 12 to 20 or more men currently are available, as shown in Fig. 1. The designs often are customized to the operating characteristics of each mine. All meet the latest federal requirements for rollover protection, emergency brake systems, etc. UTILITY VEHICLES Utility vehicles are adaptable to numerous duties. Probably the most common are ordinary haulers with a flat bed or low-sided box. They are used for hauling supplies and equipment from one point to another. Some occasionally are used for towing and may pull one or more trailers. Fig. 2 shows a typical utility truck. SPECIAL-APPLICATION VEHICLES Special-application vehicles are possibly the most important of all support types since these vehicles di¬rectly support and maintain production equipment. Such vehicles are available in a wide variety of sizes, mechanical functions, and operating specifications. Most versions are four-wheel drive and articulated. Among the more common vehicles are explosive haulers and loaders, mechanic's trucks, lubrication trucks (Fig. 3), and special carriers. TYPICAL APPLICATIONS Development Utility haulers are essential in trackless operations to bring supplies to advancing headings. Some utility haulers may be dedicated to bringing in steel sets and may be equipped with boom lifts to unload heavy sup¬ports or even place them as required. A rockbolt hauler may have a boom-mounted operator's basket which can be used for bolt installation or inspection. Various mechanic's trucks and pipe trucks service the heading to keep power, air, water, and ventilation at the face and to keep face equipment at maximum utilization. Production Production operations require a variety of support equipment. Because of the larger crew size brought about by the addition of the production force, personnel carriers play a greater role. Correspondingly, steel¬support hauling equipment and bolting trucks usually see limited application. PRODUCTION UNITS Capacity Personnel carriers are available to carry almost any number of people desired. Likewise, other types of carriers or haulers can and are built to fit specific re¬quirements. Physical size, capacity, and operating char¬acteristics can be varied to fit any size of opening and operating condition. Generally, articulated models offer greater maneuverability than straight frame-axle steer designs. Most vehicles of this type are lower in power than production units, generally under 74.6 kW (100 hp). Operating performance still compares favorably to that of production equipment, i.e., the support vehicles can travel at equivalent speeds on the various mine gradients. Manpower Auxiliary vehicles should require only a single opera¬tor. Specific application vehicles may require more than one person. For example, ventilation trucks usually require a crew of two where pipe must be installed.

Introduction A mine characteristic curve is of great importance for both theoretical analysis and daily management of a mine ventilation network. Ventilation engineers are well acquainted with the ways of obtaining and using a mine characteristic curve that is conventionally associated only with single-fan networks. However, for a multiple-fan network, difficulty has long been recognized in defining the curve, not to mention, obtaining or using it. To extend the concept of mine characteristic curves for a multiple-fan network, a subsystem-based approach has been introduced by Wang (1992a). He defines a subsystem characteristic curve for a multiple-fan network and discusses the numerical procedure for constructing the curve. A graphical method of obtaining a subsystem characteristic curve for serial-parallel, multiple-fan networks has also been accomplished (Wang, 1992b). In spite of the maturity of the fundamental concepts related to and the numerical analysis tool for a multiple-fan ventilation network, information regarding the related laboratory tests is very scarce. To make up this gap, laboratory experiments have been done by using a two-fan experimental network. This paper presents the methodology and major findings regarding the construction and features of a subsystem characteristic curve. Characteristic curves and measurement fundamentals A characteristic curve A characteristic curve is a graphic presentation of the relationship between any two variables of a two-terminal component. It is typically defined in the form of a quantity-pressure curve for a ventilation component, which can be a single branch (airway), a fan, a regulator, a portion of a network or even a whole network. If a component is a single branch, the curve is called a branch characteristic curve. If it is a fan, then the curve is called a fan characteristic curve, and so on. Figure I illustrates the characteristic curves of some typical ventilation components. A general method for obtaining a characteristic curve from measurement is to apply an adjustable-pressure source between the two terminals of a component and measure the quantities corresponding to the different pressures. Mine characteristic curve A single-fan network can be easily divided into two ventilation components, the fan and the remaining network. The latter consists of only branches and regulators. Under this subdivision scheme, two characteristic curves can be constructed. They are the fan characteristic curve and the characteristic curve of the remaining network. The latter is referred to as the mine characteristic curve or the system characteristic curve. Although the general method for constructing a characteristic curve from measurement can be applied to obtain a mine characteristic curve, there is a shortcut for constructing the curve by introducing a mine resistance factor R. It is a constant if all of the resistance factors in the network are constant. R relates mine pressure H with quantity Q as in: H=RQ2 (1) For a given R, Eq. (1) can be directly used to plot a mine characteristic curve by assigning a series of Q values and calculating the corresponding H values. Hence a shortcut to constructing a mine characteristic curve is to measure one set of mine pressure H and quantity Q values, calculate the mine resistance factor R using Eq. (1) and then plot the curve. Subsystem characteristic curve Applying a similar scheme as is used for a single-fan system, divide a multiple-fan network into two components, a fan under consideration and the remaining network that contains all the other elements (branches, regulators and remaining fans) of the network. What is the most economical way of tunneling in mixed ground that may experience high pressures? Non-continuously pressurized, mixed ground Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) are being utilized to deal with a wide range of geology. Continuous improvements in these mixed ground machines allow for ever-increasing efficiency and reduction of project risk due to unexpected conditions. We will explore the performance of recent mixed ground machines throughout the world and then look at how new improvements to mixed ground machines will enable excavation of an expanded range of ground conditions. These conditions include mixed ground with low fines, mixed face rock, and fracture/fault zones with high pressures where in the past a Slurry TBM may have been utilized.

Introduction Since the beginning of operations at the pellet plant at Ponta Ubu ES, Samarco Mineração SA has produced pellets for direct reduction and blast furnace processes. Of the total amount of pellets produced from 1977 through 1993, 55 % are used in the blast furnace, about 45 Mt (49.6 million st). The principal components of pellet gangue are calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, silica and alumina. They should be added in adequate quantities to guarantee the mechanical resistance of the fired pellets under blast furnace conditions. Over the years, the pellets produced by Samarco had a silica content between 2.5% and 2.8% and varying binary basicity preferably between 0.8 and 0.85. On the other hand, the increasing amount of industrial waste in siderurgical plants caused by the increase of steel production has caused some countries to put into practice methods to reduce the volume of slag produced in the blast furnace. This paper's goal is to find an alternative for decreasing the amount of slag produced in the blast furnace. It is possible to decrease pellet gangue by decreasing the silica content to about 2%, leaving the metallurgical properties and quality of pellets unaltered. For this work, Samarco pellets were used with Si02 between 2.5% and 2.8%, pellets with high silica and pellets with Si02 between 2.0% and 2.3% low silica. Both were partially fluxed by the range of varying basicity CaO/SiO2 from 0.8 to 0.95 during production. Experimental tests on pilot scale Thhis work began in January 1986 in the pilot plant (pot grate, Fig. 1) at Samarco. Its goal was to obtain preliminary data that would indicate the bybility of the project. It also formed a solid base to extend the studies in tests on an industrial scale of production for blast-furnace pellets. The pot grate is a test furnace composed of a gas burner, a combustion chamber and a grate, connected by hot air ducts. The burner is fed by a mixture of LPG and air. It reaches high temperatures through oxygen injection. The combustion chamber heats the air that comes from the turbocompressor. This hot air flows through the ducts to the grate on which the pellet samples are fired. During updraft drying, downdraft drying, preheating, firing and afterfiring, the upward and downward direction of the air flow can be controlled by valves driven by pneumatic cylinders. The pot grate indurator was fully automated in August 1989. Positive and negative pressures measurements resulting from gas passing through the pellet layer, as well as temperature readings, are recorded in graphs in relation to time for all tests. The tests depend on the various steps carried out in sequence that can influence the results of the tests. Therefore, some criteria were adopted to restrict the number of variables in the process. This was done to facilitate the results of the analysis. The pellets were composed of concentrate, bentonite, hydrated calcitic lime and metallurgical coal, all regularly used in the pellet plant. The material balance of the pellets mix was determined from the chemical analysis of the components. Table 1 shows the chemical characteristics of the concentrate and the additives used in the pilot plant and industrial tests. The basicity has a marked influence on the metallurgical properties of the pellets produced by Samarco with a silica content between 2.5% and 2.8%. However, for pellets with low silica (about 2%), it was necessary to study the variation in the parameters of quality in a wide range of basicities to deliniate with precision a scope of work. A large variety of low-silica blast-furnace pellets were produced at the pilot plant with binary basicity varying between 0.8 and 0.95. After chemical analysis, those pellets were separated into five groups of different binary basicity (0.8, 0.84, 0.87, 0.90 and 0.95). Each was then split, one part for metallurgical tests in the laboratory at Samarco and another to be evaluated in a laboratory for metallurgical tests in Germany. White Pine Copper Company operates a mine in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan using a modified room-and-pillar system for extracting ore.1 Mine production averages 15, 500 tons per day. The terrain is predominantly level and the depth of cover varies from 500 to 800 feet over the present workings with depth increasing as mining progresses down the dip. The deposit is situated on a low angle plunging, anticlinal structure composed of sedimentary beds. Local terminology for the stratigraphic units which contain the ore horizons, named in ascending order, is as follows: lower sandstone, parting shale, upper sandstone and upper shale. The ore zones of copper enrichment are, contained in the parting and upper shales. The parting shale will vary; from 6. 5 to 9.0 feet thick; the upper sandstone from 2 to 10 feet; and the upper shale from 1. 5 to 6. 5 feet. Two variation of the room-and-pillar system are used to extract the ore depending on grade and local ground conditions. One system is called the parting shale method and recovers the parting shale only. This system requires a mining height of 8 1/2 feet to accommodate large-scale, high-capacity equipment and this working height is obtained by removing approximately 1 to 2 feet of the barren lower sandstone with the ore. Under the second system, locally termed full column, the mining height is about 14-1/2 feet and this system removes the parting shale, the upper sandstone and the lower mineralized zone, approximately 1-1/2 feet, of the upper shale at which point it is possible to maintain a competent back (Fig. 1).1

The US economy grew steadily in 1989, reaching an annual rate of $5.3 trillion in the last quarter (US trillion=1012 ). The value of domestically processed, mineral-based materials rose 5% to $315 billion (US billion=109). The value of metals produced from US ores rose 14% to $11.6 billion, while industrial minerals rose 2% to $20.2 billion. Recycled scrap was valued at $10 billion. Increasing economic activity stimulated metal prices. Yearly lows and highs were $2.31 and $3.56/kg ($1.05 and $1.62 per lb) for copper, $1.58 and $2.57/kg (72 and $1.17 per lb) for aluminum, 77 and 97 cents/kg (35 cents and 44 cents per lb) for lead, and $1.58 and $2.09/kg (72 cents and 95 cents per lb) for zinc. Many mining and metal companies reported reasonable profits. Consumer demand strongly affects mining because the US economy is saturated with long-lived products. Consumer, mortgage, and Federal debt continued to rise. 250 million US citizens already possess 172 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. New car production fell 4% to 6.8 million units, while truck and bus production fell 1 % to four million units. New housing starts fell 9% to 1.4 million units. Imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important mineral materials. Imports of crude and refined petroleum costing $50 billion exceeded domestic crude oil production. President Bush expressed "strong concerns about this country becoming further dependent on foreign oil." And the Department of Energy held a series of hearings around the country to develop ideas for a "national energy strategy."

Over the many years since the development of the steam powered shovel, various powering and control techniques have been employed for the various shovel functions. While volumes have been published on this subject, this paper will be limited to a very brief discus-sion of one of the latest of these and its application to a unique machine. The evaluation of the subject machine is far beyond the scope of this discussion, which will be limited to the techniques and equipment employed, and the considerations involved in their choice. The basic requirements for any power and associated control system for any power shovel function have remained relatively un-changed over the years. To the extent possible, such an equipment grouping must be: Easy to install during fabrication Easy to maintain and repair by available personnel Life cycle cost competitive Adequately reliable Adequately responsive And as may be expected these factors are arranged in various orders of priority by different manufacturers and users. All the various time honored approaches have to some extent fulfilled these require-ments but were discarded or fell into disuse when more effective approaches were developed. The latest in this long line of develop-ments and perhaps the most promising is that of electro-hydraulic controls and hydraulic drive.

A new sanitary sewer was installed in Pleasant Hill, California using microtunnelling methods. The project consisted of 693 meters of 1372 mm and 1981 mm concrete pipe. A Herrenknecht AVN 1200 was used to install the nominal 1372 mm pipe in three drives. The machine was then fitted with an oversized shield used to install the large diameter pipeline. This articulated shield allowed the excavation of a 2362 mm diameter hole with a 1524 mm machine-- a technique new to North America. This paper reviews the design considerations for the articulated shield and reports on the project challenges and solutions to overcome these challenges.

In the decades to come, the world will be marked by a variety of underground projects never before seen. This paper describes a series of characteristic challenges of designing and building underground freight transportation systems, with reference to the example of Cargo sous terrain, a privately funded underground logistics project in Switzerland. It provides an overview of contracting practices that allow these challenges to be addressed with success.

Two Sun Juan Basin studies were completed through the USGS National Coal Availability program. The study areas are in the northwest Bisti field (Fruitland Formation) and in the eastern Standing Rock field (Menefee Formation). In the Bisti and Standing Rock areas, the original coal resource5 are estimated at 4.66 and 3.1 7 Gt (5.14 and 3.49 billion st), respectively. The Bisti coal resources are greatly reduced by the Bisti-De-Nu- Zin wilderness area, which contains an estimated 1.13 Gt (1.25 billion st) of coal. Technological restrictions remove 32.5% from Standing Rock's original resource. Available resources are 60%. 2.79 Gt (3.07 billion st), of the Bisti original resource and 65%, 2.07 Gt (2.28 billion st), of the original Standing Rock resource.

This paper describes some recent work on the identification and development of new chemical reagents aimed at improving the industrial processing of phosphate ores by froth flotation. In particular, three chemical product families which will be discussed appear to offer enhanced flexibility by: 1) utilizing a small amount of a silica control reagent which can significantly reduce the amount of anionic (carboxylic) collector required for a given P2O5 recovery level; 2) utilizing a new anionic collector family which offers high P2O5 recovery and selectivity versus standard carboxylic collectors; and 3) utilizing another new anionic collector family which has, in some tests, allowed for selective removal of dolomite from apatite. Examples and use characteristics of each of these new chemical ideas will be presented.

Unplanned tailgate collapses and difficult mining conditions in U.S. longwalls have necessitated the use of innovative tailgate support systems. Severe ground movement induced by longwall loading has caused operators to utilize secondary support systems that can match yield and strength requirements with expected ground reactions. Standing support performance requirements depend on the nature of the ground deformation behavior, and therefore require a good understanding of the interaction between the support and ground to achieve an optimum roof support system. Mining operations often employ standing support strategies that are unique to their mine. A support system that functions successfully in one situation could fail in another situation. It is important that the design and installation of the standing support systems provide the highest probability of preventing roof falls. Pumpable roof supports are currently being used to provide a safe working environment for longwall mining. A full understanding of the impact of these performance characteristics is necessary to optimize the support application and to provide a foundation for making further improvements in the support performance. Optimization of roof support applications helps to ensure the protection of mine workers by preventing roof falls due to inadequate support design. The load capacity and stiffness characteristics of a 27-in.-diameter pumpable support system was evaluated using the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mine Roof Simulator (MRS). Previously, tests to evaluate the performance characteristics were performed on a single pumpable support. The goal of this new research is to evaluate the performance characteristic effects of the pumpable support system and compare it to an individual pumpable test examination. This research of a pumpable support system configuration simulates the current installation practices in U.S. coal mines.

The topic of this paper is to demonstrate the development of mobile crushing installations from throughput capacities of 200 tons per hour, to mobile and semi-mobile large- scale crushing installations with throughput capacities of 3,500 up to 10,000 tons per hour. Basis are approximately 140 mobile and semi-mobile crushing installations which have been built since 1956 or were on order in 1987. [FIGURE 1. Total Number of Mobile or Semi-mobile Crushing Plants] Sixteen of these approximate 140 mobile and semi-mobile crushing installations have a throughput higher than 3,500 metric tons per hour. Mobile crushers were developed more than 25 years ago in Europe for the quarry industry, which had special requirements - fairly low capacity, mostly softer and less abrasive material (limestone) and full mobility. So the majority of the units up to about 1980 were fully mobile, having a fairly small capacity and utilizing mainly hammermills, double roll and impact crushers. It was only when the mining industry and large quarries picked up the concept in the early 1980's that a drastic increase in capacity took place. Even though the first mobile crusher in a true mining application went into service in 1971, it took another 10 years before it proceeded in a larger scale. This trend was obviously supported by the drastic fuel price and energy cost increase in the mid 70's. Since the cost of conveying material is substantially cheaper than trucking it, the increase in energy cost, combined with increasing haulage distances provided a strong incentive. Figure 1 shows clearly the throughput distribution of all crushing installations and it also shows the sharp increase in the throughput capacities within the last few years.

Burst-prone conditions are a significant hazard in deep hardrock mines, elevating the risk to excavation stability and, more importantly, to worker safety. As mining progresses deeper, induced stress changes may trigger the initiation of rock failure processes which can be detected and recorded as mine seismicity. The implementation of seismic monitoring and routine seismic data analyses enables mine seismicity to be quantified spatially, temporally and on scale. The ability to quantify and characterize mine seismicity offers the opportunity to gauge seismic hazard, identifying high risk zones for mitigation against burst-prone excavation failure. Over the last decade, the Mines Technical Services (MTS) group at Vale Canada Limited’s Garson Mine assessed seismic hazard with the objective of assigning practical mitigating controls to zones identified as having a high rockburst potential. Initially, seismic hazard was computed using the Seismic Excavation Hazard Mapping (SEHM) software developed by the Mining Innovation Rehabilitation and Applied Research Corporation (MIRARCO) at Laurentian University, Canada. More recently, Vale Sudbury Operations partnered with the Australian Centre for Geomechanics and the University of Western Australia’s mXrap consortium. Through the consortium partnership, MTS at Garson Mine implemented the mXrap seismic data analyses platform, including the grid-based seismic hazard assessment tool. Building on 10 years of seismic hazard assessment experience at Vale Garson Mine, this paper summarizes a comprehensive case study, comparing the two tools (SHEM and mXrap) used at Garson Mine to assess, quantify, and represent seismic hazard. Subsequently, results of the Garson Mine comparative seismic hazard study will be discussed, emphasizing the need for an all-inclusive hazard assessment tool, focused on delivering practical mitigating controls that further enhance the overall safety of seismically active underground mines.

Although the number of operating longwall mining systems has remained relatively constant, longwall production levels during the last five years have increased significantly. In the United States, longwall mining now accounts for approximately 50% of all underground coal production. While longwalls are highly productive and offer other advantages, operations employing this method of mining continue to experience dust-compliance problems. This increased longwall productivity has meant that far more dust is being produced. An improved understanding of the longwall face-ventilation system and the advancement of face-ventilation technologies are necessary to ensure all face personnel are allowed to work in an environment that is free of excessive levels of airborne respirable coal mine dust. The Dust and Toxic Substances Control Branch, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, examined several basic principles of the long wall face-ventilation system and has evaluated the effectiveness of numerous improved face-ventilation techniques for longwall mining systems. These include identifying improved techniques for measuring face-ventilation parameters on longwall mining sections and investigating the fundamental relationship between face airflow and the entrainment and dilution of respirable coal mine dust. Studies have been completed to determine the impact on face dust levels of using belt entry air to ventilate the longwall. Novel methods have been identified to increase the face air¬flow and to manage face airflow to effectively minimize dust exposure to face workers. Unique systems of auxiliary face ventilation have been developed and evaluated at full-scale, simulated longwall test facilities. The theoretical and applied aspects of each of these principles and technologies are discussed. Application of these results throughout the longwall mining industry, as documented from surveys conducted in the early 1980s and 1990s, have reduced the health hazard associated with excessive exposure to respirable coal mine dust.

The use of medium-to-high sulfur coals has been negatively impacted by the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendment (CAAA). In this article, a method is demonstrated that can render these coals competitive and yet compliant with Phase II of CAAA. The method uses strategic mining and optimized preparation plant operation to minimize production costs, and it utilizes advanced coal-cleaning technology and an SO2 allowance to produce a compliant coal. The method is illustrated through an example from southern Illinois. For an annual production of 3.2 Mt (3.5 million st) and with a $150/st SO2 allowance cost, it was possible to produce a competitive coal for $0.84/million Btu. The production and allowance costs were $0.608/million Btu and $0.232/million Btu, respectively.

A new extraction method which includes a combination of gravity and alternating electromagnetic fields with interfriction of mineral particles was proposed (Tikhonov O.N., 1979) and tested in lab conditions at Mineral Processing Department of St. Petersburg Mining Institute. At the beginning of the work the main goal was to find an efficient alternative to traditional extraction methods (like shaking table, etc.) used for concentration of fine alluvial gold particles. After the method and a series of gradually improved lab separators (Tikhonov, et al., 1983) were positively tested for gold (Tikhonov, et al.. 1986) the efficiency of the method was also proved for extraction of and other heavy minerals from alluvial and ground ores in experimental work at the St. Petersburg Mining Institute. The fine heavy minerals were separated to concentrates with high technological indices (Andreev et al., 1987), (Tikhonov, Gladkov, 1987), (Tikhonov, Gladkov 1989). In parallel a semi-industrial gravi-electro- magnetic separator was made and several technological flowsheets were designed for testing the method in industrial conditions (Tikhonov O.N., Miazin B.N., 1987), (Tikhonov O.N., Tolstunov S.A., Jebelev V.V.,1989). A series of industrial tests accompanied with complete sampling and standard technological measurements were performed at several alluvial deposits, with good technological indices. Thus the method and the flowsheets displayed high additional recovery of fine alluvial gold particles during elkrated industrial experiments in Siberia (Aldan province). At higher concentrate grade this method, even in one-stage operation, increased gold recovery more than by 25% compared with shaking table (for particles -0.10 mm gold recovery was 82% vs. 55% by shaking table, for particles - 0.25mm the recovery was 97.5% vs. 61.8%). INTRODUCTION The literature on project management considerations and techniques for large rail rapid transit projects in mid-1979 was fairly large and getting larger. UMTA was establishing special organizational elements to deal with the subject as it related to those properties requesting capital assistance, and comprehensive project management plans were being requested from those properties as an early step to build confidence in UMTA that the particular project could be planned, designed, and executed efficiently and effectively, thereby using critically short capital assistance funds to best advantage. In the late 60's and early 70's, the choices of models for heavy rail construction would have been quite limited.., and perhaps much simpler than was the case in 1979. One of the writers was with an agency in 1979 in the process of finalizing its organization for project implementation after several years of study and had the opportunity to review the experiences of others at length, presumably to build on the success and to try to avoid the pitfalls and failures. The properties that were surveyed all reported more or less success stories. One could only conclude that there are many ways to organize for a major transit (construction) project and that there is a great variety of viable management structures, but it seemed that chances for success were best where the executing property had prepared a comprehensive project management plan, then resolved to follow it. Perhaps more important, a commitment or prior approval had been sought from UMTA as to the validity of the project management plan, and the property was allowed to proceed without detailed prior UMTA review or approval of all specific intermediate steps. Most important, however, an early overall UMTA funding commitment had been obtained that permitted some reasonable expectation of the rate of funding, perhaps by commitment

Mineable material is defined using cut-off grade either as geological or economic cut-off grade. Both geological and economic cut-off grade affects the output generated in an open-pit mining operation. It distinguishes the amount of ore sent to the mill for processing and waste to the dump. This consequently affects the overall profits generated from the operation hence the need for cut-off grade optimization. There are several mining parameters that are considered in a typical cut-off grade model. They include economic, geological, and operational parameters. They have a significant effect to influence the cut-off grade selected in mining operations at any given period. Some of the parameters are stochastic in nature by having a random probability distribution that may not be predicted precisely. When selecting cut-off grades in a mine operation, the mining engineers must consider the dynamic nature of the operational parameters in order to maximize the net present value of the project. Modifying Lane’s cut-off grade model which was developed in 1964 to incorporate the stochastic parameters in the approach helps improve the net present value as shown in the paper. The modified Lane’s approach is developed into a stochastic computer-aided application code-named NPVMining. Using NPVMining, selected stochastic parameters are considered in this exercise to show the effect on the output (net present value). The selected parameters (price and grade-tonnage) are varied by ± 10%. NPVMining has a graphical user interface that makes it easy to use and displays results in a user-friendly way. It gives the user the choice to manipulate the data depending on the study being undertaken or any other factor affecting the specific mine. This paper analyses the effect of each of the selected mining parameters on cut-off grade using NPVMining to show the significance of monitoring their variance.
