Barometric pressure changes affect air density, leading to change in the mass of the gas in the gob. When the barometric pressure decreases, the volume of gas in the gob expands, while the volume of gas contracts when the barometric pressure increases, a process which causes the gob to “breathe” out and in. Although the concept of gob “breathing” is simple, its effect on spontaneous heating of coal in the gob area is not clear. In this study, computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations were conducted to model the spontaneous heating of coal in the longwall gob area under measured barometric pressure changes. A single longwall panel using a bleederless ventilation system was simulated. If there is no barometric pressure change, the intake airflow rate is equal to the return airflow rate. When the barometric pressure changes, these two airflow rates are no longer equal, and the difference between the two airflow rates represents the airflow rate the gob breathes in and out. The effect of inflow and outflow of gas on the potential spontaneous heating in the gob was investigated using the CFD model developed in our previous study. The effect of barometric pressure changes on the spontaneous heating was found to be dependent on the gob permeability and the coal oxidation rate. The effect of barometric pressure changes on oxygen concentrations in the gob was also examined.

Gold Fields Mining Corporation is presently evaluating gold mineralization beneath thick, wet alluvium at the Chimney Creek Project, Nevada. Contamination of reverse circulation samples has been visually apparent since drilling began in the area. Tests have shown that, while contamination can affect assays, reverse circulation holes appear to define mineralized zones almost as well as the diamond drill holes. To improve reverse circulation sample integrity several techniques were tried including a stiff-mud injection system but with limited success. Diamond core drilling continues to be used in conjunction with reverse circulation drilling to further delineate the mineralization.

"The paper presents a brief overview of the long mining history and the more recent political development in the Slovak and Czech Republics as well as in Norway and Sweden. Mining used to be very important sources of economic wealth in the four countries, but in today’s economy does exploitation of non-energy minerals usually account for less than one per cent of the GNP. The paper will discuss and compare the mining legislation, land use planning and mineral policies framework in the four countries and how this may influence sustainable management of mineral resources including planning for mineral supply, landbanks and sterilisation of resources. The paper will then identify some positive and negative elements in each country’s political and administrative framework."

"INTRODUCTIONDouble Shield TBMs were introduced in the market in the early seventies with three main targets:• Increase the TBM performances in term of advance per day thanks to the ability to erect a segmental lining simultaneously with the excavation phase.• Be able to advance through unstable and disturbed rocks under the protection of the shields• Provide a finished tunnel by installing a precast lining as the TBM advance.In 2003 SELI developed the design of the Double Shield Universal (DSU) TBM as an evolution of the original Double Shield TBM design.This new TBM design was targeted to improve: the TBM capability to advance through squeezing/converging rock formations under high cover, the telescopic joint design (allowing by such to operate the machine in double shield mode in very weak rock), the capability of the TBM to investigate and treat the ground around and ahead of the tunnel face.In the same lapse of time Single Shield TBMs, originally utilized for soft ground tunnelling, extended progressively their range of application to mix rocks and finally to hard rock tunnelling with increasing performances.This also thanks to the substantial reduction in the installation time of the segmental lining ring that contributed to minimize the TBM stand by time between two consecutive boring strokes.Today the choice between the two types of TBMs needs to be carefully evaluated project by project since one type of TBM may “prevail” in certain geologies and diameters and vice versa.THE VISHNUGAD PIPALKOTI TUNNELThe Vishnugad Pipalkoti Tunnel is part of the 444 MW Vishnugad Pipalkoti Hydro Electric Project (VPHEP) on Alaknanda river in Uttarakhand (India).The Owner is the Indian electric company “Tehry Hydro Development Corporation” (THDC) and the World Bank finances the project.The Headrace Tunnel total length is 13.4 Km and a section of about 12,3km will be excavated by TBM by SELI Overseas (Italy) in subcontract to HCC (India) the General Contractor for the project. The TBM will be delivered ex workshop in March 2016 and it is foreseen to start boring in the second half of 2016.Figure 1 below shows the location of the project and the following Table 1 summarizes the geometrical characteristics of the TBM tunnel."

This paper will describe the benefits of utilizing the decision support system, DSS to support the methodology of structured decision-making in the mining environment. Creating alternate courses of action and the implications up and downstream. 3. It will review the current condition were although a multitude of technologies resolve multi variable issues they do not interact in a way that assists decision makers throughout the organization in making high-quality decisions that will push the overall performance envelope. 4. The paper will show the benefits of integrating military methodologies to resolve multi variable complexed issues (operational, financial and other), operating in changing environments in order to meet time sensitive objectives with restricted resources. This is achieved by creating a shared situational awareness thru incorporating information from a multitude of data generating agents, creating COA, selecting the appropriate and turning it into a plan. The paper will discuss the implementation and suggest a path.

This paper details the extensive underpinning required to hold up the 39th street Bridge while demolishing its massive support piers and building a 30ft deep Cut/ Cover RR tunnel beneath it. The underpinning/SOE support required the construction of 16 large hand dug pits 36ft deep that were reinforced and concrete filled. In addition, an extensive steel support system was tied into the bridge super structure. All of the underpinning/tunnel construction was done while a 110ton crane sat directly atop the heavily trafficked – 66 ft. wide bridge. The tunnel excavation, concrete lining and final bridge pier support work will also be presented. All work was done within 5ft of active mainline tracks and that required tight grouting behind all lagging to eliminate any track settlement.

Introduction A new mining agenda is before us. Born of government policies and world economies, the years ahead will show reduced growth. Metals, mining, and most other natural resource industries are inflation dependant and capital intensive. For these, a long period of contraction of outmoded and costly capacity will evolve. In some cases, this will be supplanted by new, lower cost capacity. But this will occur only if the cost of production - including cash operating and debt service costs - comes in at or below current market conditions. The industrial outlook for metals mining can be characterized as bearish. A US bank economist said mining companies planning their five-year forecasts should take current market conditions and straight-line them to the end of the decade. With low growth and low inflation, the real price of metals will remain flat or decline slightly. As a result, capital funding will be problematic. The low-cost producer will succeed. That means only the producer with low cash costs and low principal and interest costs per unit of production, will succeed. Gaining a perspective One must look back 30 years to see the evolution of the capital markets, for metal mine financing. This period can be divided into two economic periods. The 1950s were a time of stable economics. Mining companies earned and reported good profits. They had good corporate creditworthiness. In essence, mining companies of the 1950s were highly self-reliant. When equity infusions were needed, they were easily obtained. Financial management kept long-term debt low. Fixed rate, long-term financing was readily available in the long-term bond markets. The commercial banks of the 1950s were rarely used by the mining industry. When necessary, mining companies went to the banks for short-term financing - the kind that was needed for working capital requirements. Changing rhythms In the old rhythm there was an orderly market. Even into the mid-1960s, 75% of world annual copper production was controlled by eight companies: two in the UK, one in Belgium, and five in the US. During times of poor market demand, these producers would control supplies to the market. They took their losses out of retained earnings. Capital was easily restored during the ensuing good times. The new rhythm called for copper to be an economic means to a political end. Third World copper producers brushed aside the market fundamentals of commodity economics. Yet, the political solutions of these countries - their lack of response to the market - have seldom achieved their original objectives. Each commodity has its own old and new rhythm. Aluminum may have a similar rhythm, coming 10 to 20 years later than copper. By the late 1960s, changes were occurring. Inflation was on the rise. Ore reserve quality was falling. As a result, capital expenditures were necessary to maintain existing output. These costs created an increase in corporate leverage, thus adding to inflation and rising interest rates. Indicators A comparison of the gross national product (GNP) deflator index, consumer price index, and the metal mining deflator index is instructive. (Fig. 1 and Table 1). With 1972 equal to 1, note that the metal mining deflator reached its lowest point in 1967. From that point, the metal mining deflator has accelerated severely for 16 years. Only two minor downturns occurred during the business recessions of the mid-1970s and the early 1980s. In essence, Fig. 1 shows that while GNP has grown modestly, a miner's dollar in 1972 would require $3.48 in 1980. This is an almost 17% compounded growth rate over that eight-year period. Beginning in the late 1960s, for the first time in mine financing, the risk of success shifted from the corporate balance sheet to third parties. Limited-resource financings were taken up by banking syndicates that accepted certain of these risks. The lender needed to be well acquainted with the types of risks to be evaluated. These include resource quality and quantity, construction and completion, capital and operations costs, market risks, force majeure, and political and exchange rate risks. Project financings became the basis whereby mining companies were able to maintain their borrowing capacities. In essence, the lender was willing to share some of the project risk while only receiving lenders' returns on these investments. INTRODUCTION Uranium production in Saskatchewan commenced in 1953 at the Eldorado Nuclear Mine in the Beaverlodge area of North Saskatchewan, followed over the next few years by nineteen other smaller mining operations. Production rose from 453 600 to 2 721 600 kg per annum by 1958. Over supply and the closure of the U.S. market to Canadian uranium led to an equally rapid decline to an annual production which varied from 453 600 to 907 200 kg during the years 1964 to 1976. As the market strengthened there was a resurgence of the Saskatchewan industry and production from one underground and two open pit mines reached 2 809 000 kg in 1980 for a return of 232 000 000 dollars (Table 1). [ ] Future output will be increased by a potential 4 536 000 kg from the Key Lake mine now under construction and scheduled to commence production in 1983. Three other projects are in an advanced stage of planning and are currently in the regulatory review process. Several other prospects are being evaluated. Figure 1 shows the location of uranium mines in Saskatchewan and table 2 illustrates the present status of uranium mines and deposits in Saskatchewan. At present, 1400 workers are employed directly by the uranium mining industry. Saskatchewan has diverse mining conditions ranging from the underground mine of Eldorado Nuclear Limited 1870 m deep with a low grade ore deposit averaging from 0.17-0.20% with extraction by carbonate leaching through an open pit operated by Gulf Minerals with a moderate depth of 110 m and 0.37-0.5% grade to the shallow open pit of Cluff Mining 30 m deep with a very high average ore grade of 7.0%. Extraction at both open pits utilizes acid leach extraction processes, the latter after gravimetric separation. Key Lake mining has commenced development of the next mine to come into production which will have two open pits to a depth of 80 and 175 m with an average 3% grade to be followed by the deep open pit of Canada Wide Mines Ltd. to a depth of 205 m with average grade of 1.5%. One existing mine will transfer its operation from the present open pit to another of slightly higher average grade. From the Saskatchewan point of view, these different operating conditions present varied problems associated with occupational health and safety and concomitant solutions to reducing worker exposure to radiation. REGULATION OF URANIUM MINES In 1946, the Government of Canada enacted the Atomic Energy Control Act which established the Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB) and vested in that board powers to regulate all aspects of uranium mining. In the early years, the AECB relied heavily on provincial occupational health and safety agencies for the surveillance of uranium mining and milling operations, particularly with regard to "conventional" occupational health and safety, the AECB having at the time no specific regulations covering the mining industry. There has been considerable dialogue between federal and provincial governments since, traditionally, occupational health and safety is a provincial jurisdiction. Saskatchewan is strongly opposed to the intrusion of the federal government into the provincial domain, particularly as there is little justification for a federal presence in occupational health and safety in uranium mining and milling. The province does, however, accept the need for federal involvement in certain aspects of the regulation of nuclear industry, for example, international sales, research and security of reserves for domestic use.

Froth removal rate is perhaps the most important parameter in scaling up from laboratory tests to plant froth flotation circuits. The WEMCO froth factor, the percentage of the froth height over the lip of the cell, accounts for the difference between laboratory and plant froth removal rates. As laboratory tests are generally run with a high pulp level, laboratory results are directly comparable to plant results only when a high froth factor (high pulp level) is run in the plant. When a plant does not have a high pulp level, laboratory results must be modified by using a ratio between laboratory and plant kinetics to predict plant results. This ratio, which accounts for the froth factor is important in testing any new reagents or reagent dosage levels. CQ Inc. researchers have used predictive scale-up equations using this froth factor coupled with equations for kinetics and the residence time distribution in the froth flotation cells. These equations show that modifying the froth factor in the plant can have a large impact on flotation cell yield and reagent use. EQUATIONS DESCRIBING FROTH FLOTATION Scaling up from laboratory- to plant-scale coal froth flotation has been the subject of much research and debate over the years. Determining the proper rate equation to describe flotation kinetics and an equation to describe the residence time distribution in a bank of flotation cells have been particular areas of study. As shown in Tables 1 and 2, various rate equations and residence time distribution equations have been proposed in the literature. These equations consist of one or two parameters giving the rate constant(s) in units of time-1 and a parameter for recovery at infinite time, [Roo]. Dowling, Klimpel, and Aplan (1985) evaluated the rate equations in Table 1 for their ability to fit froth flotation kinetic data and found that all of the equations give reasonably low standard errors. Several of these equations, however, proved to have superior confidence limits for the parameters. Other equations have also been proposed to describe the recovery versus time profile. Most recently, Diao et al. (1992) proposed a first-order form with a sine wave distribution. As indicated in Table 2, investigators have suggested many equations to describe the residence time distribution in continuous froth flotation. To measure the water residence time distribution in a bank of cells, a soluble tracer is often used, with the level of tracer being measured over time at the tailings discharge. This response is then put on a dimensionless basis as described by Austin et al. (1984) in order to compare mixing behavior between cells or under different conditions. Coal flotation cells are generally of the flow-through or hog-trough variety allowing for some degree of backmixing and short-circuiting. While the water residence time distribution (see Figure 1) at the end of one cell in a bank of 1.4 cu ft WEMCO froth flotation cells may approximate perfect mixing conditions (Arnold, 1989), the water residence time distribution at the end of a bank of cells does not. Figure 2 shows the RTD for various flotation cell types compared to that for perfect mixers in series. To better describe the water residence time distribution in coal froth flotation cells, Van Orden (1986) used an equation similar to the perfect-mixers-in-aeries equation. This

"For the Hollywood International Airport Runway Expansion Project at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the structural fire durability analysis was completed for a series of tunnels formed by roadway and railroad cells located under the runway structure. A systematic design approach was developed to mitigate structural damage during a fire event and arrive at a practical method to structural fire engineering that is compliant to NFPA 502. To ensure the NFPA 502 requirements are satisfied, the performance based approach was implemented and the engineering analyses were performed for the adopted design fire event. The analyses considered the facility’s unique features including its fire safety systems to determine applicable design fire curves for structural durability analyses. The paper also outlines the process of defining the project specific fire curves for a specific design fire scenario and summarizes the results of heat transfer and structural fire durability analyses. This approach was aimed to assist the owner and Authority Having Jurisdiction to achieve practical decisions to the tunnel facility fireproofing.INTRODUCTIONFort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport (FLL) in Broward County, Florida is a major hub facility serving more than 23 million passengers annually. As part of the Airport Expansion Program, the South Runway (9R-27L) Expansion project aimed to meet ever increasing service demands via an increase to runway lengths. This necessitated the placement of one of the reconstructed runways on bridge structures over the existing U.S. Route 1 (US 1), a major north–south U.S. Highway that serves the East Coast of the United States, and the Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway, thus effectively creating multiple tunnel cells beneath the subject runway. For this project, HNTB suggested a tunnel fire damage mitigation system that would protect the runway major structural elements from the design fire event that may happen within the tunnel cells. This paper addresses the issues related to the fire event originating within the tunnel encompassing the US1 highway only, and deals with requirements of NFPA 502 [5] exclusively. Therefore, while approaching the structural fire protection issues for the specific tunnel cells beneath the runway structure, the requirements of the American National Standard NFPA 502 (Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways, 2008 edition) were followed. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Geological Survey of Wyoming, and U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), will produce an estimate of the amount of available coal in an area about 55 Ian (35 miles) south of Gillette, Wyo., where the Wyodak coal bed is 8-27 m (25-90 ft) thick. Available coal is coal that actually is accessible for development under current regulatory, land-use, and technologic conditions. Local coal-development considerations include roads, ranches, railroads, pipelines, power lines, wildlife and archaeological sites, alluvial valley floors, cemeteries, and the Hilight oil and gas field and gas plant. Some of these considerations would be mitigated so that surface mining may proceed; others presently preclude mining in their vicinity.

"The spontaneous combustion of coal storage pile(Gangue Hill) is one of the seriously threat encountered in coal mining and storage. The dynamic accumulation of internal heat in coal storage pile(Gangue Hill) provides continuous heat-source for coal spontaneous combustion. Combined with the features and characteristics of coal pile storage, a technology of heat pipe(HP) is applied to enhance heat transfer. In order to prevent spontaneous combustion of coal storage piles (hillock) due to regeneration, a method using heat pipes to destroy the heat preservation conditions of coal storage pile(Gangue Hill) is proposed, which reduces the risk of coal spontaneous combustion and prevents coal fire. A theoretical model of Coal-Thermosyphon has set up to analysis the radius of cooling effect area quantitatively. An experimental equipment of the heat transferring in a set of heat pipe, which used to study the influence on coal pile temperature distribution, has been designed. Results show, the heat pipe has a significant effect on inhibiting the coal spontaneous combustion process by destroy the heat preservation conditions of the coal. Under the experimental conditions, the most obvious coal temperature decline appears at radius 20.0mm around the pipe, dropped from 45.8? to 32.5?, a decline of 29%; the coal pile temperature at radius 420mm from 12.9? to 12.4?, a decline of 3.87%. And the research offers an effective and new approach in its application and promotion for preventing and controlling in coal spontaneous combustion.INTRODUCTION China is one of a few countries which utilize coal as the major source of energy in the world, and is the one whose characteristic of energy structure is rich coal, deficient oil and lean gas. Relatively speaking, China is abundance in mineral resources. The coal, which is the fundamental resource in the process of industrialization, is the main energy in china. Thus China cannot alter the situation of coal consumption dominated a leading role in its energy structure in near term.A massive of coal gangue would be produced every year in China with the mining activities. And it’s estimated that almost 360 million tons gangue were dumped in 2003, accounting for 10 percent of the whole coal production. Huge numbers of coal waste piles have more than 2,600 seats, which cover an area of over 12,000 hectares. Worse more, the coal gangue still has an annual growth rate of 100 million tons. Toxic smokes and greenhouse gases are discharged directly and prolongly into the atmosphere due to coal gangue spontaneous combustion. Even worse, waste dump explosion cause massive losses and are able to endanger the safety of workers. For example, one waste dump of the NO.4 Mine of Pingdingshan Coal Group Co., Ltd. occurred twice of explosions in 2005, and about 3.13 million tons of waste rocks were thrown within the range from 100 to 300 meters, eight people were killed and 122 rescuers and miners were burned, and economic losses were estimated more than 3,000 million."

Epithermal gold deposits occur in and near the marginal fault that circumscribes the Goldfield, Nevada, Tertiary caldera. The gold occurs disseminated in alunite, pyrite, and kaolin- bearing silicified zones that are controlled by the circular faults. Other Tertiary calderas (i.e., Summitville and Red Mountain No. 3) have epithermal disseminated gold deposits located in and near their marginal circular faults in settings that resemble the Goldfield example. These additional caldera- controlled epithermal gold deposits are also characterized by alunite, pyrite, and kaolin-bearing silicified rock that act as hosts for the gold disseminations. The Goldfield District is therefore an exploration model for those seeking disseminated epithermal gold deposits in a caldera setting.

The distribution of material passing a screen, or a set of screens, is described by the equation [ ] where p = the probability that a single particle will pass the screen on a single presentation k = number of layers of screen cloth n = distance from head of screen expressed as number of screen openings. This model can be used to predict the performance of conventional screening operations (i.e., k = 1) as well as the so-called "statistical screening" operations. Using this technique, in which multiple identical layers of screen cloth are employed, screening can be carried out at a finer size than is possible with conventional techniques with no loss of separation efficiency.

Liberation of valuable minerals from a gangue matrix during size reduction of multiphase mineral particles is an important objective in mineral separation processes. A methodology for the prediction of volumetric grade distribution from one dimensional, linear intercept image analysis is being developed using a transformation function to describe the relations hi p between the linear and volumetric grade distributions. As part of this research effort it has been found that a transformation function, derived from Monte Carlo simulations of irregularly shaped particles, mainly depends on the volumetric grade and the dispersion density, i.e., the number of nuclei (or grains) per particle. A possible mathematical form for the transformation function is described in detail.

I propose to do three things today. First, take a broad look at the role of mining in the Latin American economy; then, review briefly the current situation in four principal metallic mineral exporting nations -- Chile, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela; and. finally, raise some, policy questions that seem to me to be important. The Role Of Latin America In World Mining First, let's consider Latin America's position in world mining markets. Latin America provides more than 5% of world output in 16 metals or ores, ranging from antimony and barite to Tungsten and Zinc. Latin America supplies a fifth or more of the world's antimony, beryl, bismuth, copper, fluorspar, silver and Tellurium.

Australia is the world's largest coal exporter, and technological advancement is a key element of the coal industry strategy. The issues include: increased recovery of saleable coal; enhanced quality, i.e. lower ash, moisture, fines, phosphorus (sulphur is a relatively minor problem for Australian coals); better quality control; higher throughputs/lower costs; improved handling and transport; and reduced environmental impacts. In process terms, many coal preparation operations, particularly fine coal circuits, are relatively inefficient, and all circuits must also be matched and integrated for optimum overall operation. A holistic approach to technological improvement is desirable. This paper summarises research and development efforts, within CSIRO and its collaborators, across the unit operations as outlined in the title.

Mining means drilling and blasting in order to break down the rock, loading and transport, and often also crushing the ore down to a suitable size. These operations can be done in open pits or in underground mines, and also, to a lesser extent, in marine mining. The same operations are also used in various types of construction, i.e., for roads, water power stations, etc. Before beginning a detailed economic analysis of the factors which enter into deciding whether to mine by open-pit or underground mining, and at what point a change should be made from open-pit to underground mining, or vice versa, it is of interest to consider some general factors.
