Six industry trends will have significant effect on the way mining equipment is designed and supported in the years ahead: 1. MINING IS MIGRATING TO LESSER DEVELOPED PARTS OF THE WORLD The global recession of the early 1980's drove down commodity prices and intensified cost competition. This caused a fairly dramatic trend in mining away from higher cost operations in developed countries to richer, lower cost deposits in developing countries. Miners operating in lesser developed parts of the world will place higher value on rugged, durable designs that can live in more difficult and sometimes abusive conditions. They need engines and power train systems that are more tolerant of a wide variation in fuel quality and oil specifications. They'll require machines that are simpler to operate, simpler to maintain, simpler to troubleshoot and simpler to repair. And they'll require creative means of support in getting technical information, parts and components to remote operational sites. Mining equipment in the future will be more durable and simple than it is today, and product support will grow in importance as purchasing criterion. 2. THE MINING INDUSTRY IS CONSOLIDATING An intense amount of corporate acquisition and industry consolidation activity is occurring, to the point that today just 50 mining companies account for 55% of the western world non-fuel mineral production. Consolidation will continue, leading in the future to an industry structure weighted heavily toward a few key global mining houses.

Introduction The gas shortage is going to be with us for some time to come. If we can set aside political and industry rhetoric (along with subjective personal opinions), we still are confronted by two serious "facts of life": (1) for almost a decade the U.S. has been consuming natural gas at a greater rate than we have been finding new reserves; and (2) there is a finite amount of natural gas present within the earth&apos;s crust. Much of the known and easily exploitable sources of gas (the so-called "conventional" sources, such as the high permeability sand reservoirs of the Tertiary sequence along the Gulf Coast) already have been developed; their production is declining rapidly. The total producible reserves from conventional gas reservoirs amount to only 216 Tcf, less than an 11-year supply. However, several large potential resources of natural gas remain to be developed. These "unconventional sources" have low permeability and/or peculiar producing characteristics. The DOE program for development of these unconventional sources of gas is called the enhanced gas recovery (EGR) program. The primary goal of this program is to provide a data base of resource characterization and production technology that will lead to commercial development. DOE will encourage and support industry participation in developing and demonstrating technologies needed to reach this goal. Unconventional Resources Four major unconventional resources of gas have a high potential for commercial development. There are other unconventional sources (such as gas hydrates) that are too poorly defined to warrant a major development thrust at this time. The four unconventional sources of gas currently included in the EGR program are: 1. The carbonaceous shales of Devonian age in the Appalachian, Illinois, and Michigan sedimentary basins are the targets of the Eastern Gas Shales Project (EGSP). 2. The low permeability, low porosity so-called "tight" gas sandstones of the Upper Cretaceous/Lower Tertiary in the Rocky Mountain areas constitute the resource target for the Western Gas Sands Project (WGSP). 3. The free methane trapped in coal beds of both the eastern and western U. S. constitute the Methane from Coal Beds Project (MCBP). 4. The abnormally high pressured, high-temperature saltwater aquifers of the Texas-Louisiana gulf coast are targets of the Geopressured Aquifer Project (GPAP). Basic implementation strategy for these EGR projects involve (1) assessing and characterizing the resource potential of the resource; (2) conducting cost-shared field testing with industry to improve, develop, and demonstrate various stimulation and production technologies; (3) coordinating EGR activities within DOE and with other federal agencies (such as the Bureau of Mines) to minimize duplication; and (4) aiming all projects toward commercial development of the gas resources. EGSP What type of "geological animal" is the EGSP dealing with? While gas undeniably is related to the occurrence of natural fracture systems within the shale, the overall producing mechanism and precise location of fractured, gas-bearing locales within each basin is still poorly understood. By developing reliable resource characterization techniques and applying effective stimulation technologies we intend to elevate the Devonian shale from the status of a potential gas resource to that of a proven gas reserve. Once we have done this the private sector can take over the large-scale commercial development of the Devonian shale gas resource. WGSP The second largest project (both in terms of complexity and level of funding) is the WGSP. The primary targets for this project are the low permeability (< 1 md) gas sandstones of the Piceance, Uintah, and Greater Green River basins and the Northern Great Plains Province. Project success in these four primary geologic locales will permit investigating additional low permeability sandstones in 16 other sedimentary basins. It appears that the only practical means of increasing permeability and resultant flow rates from these sandstones lies in the use of massive hydraulic fracturing techniques. Unfortunately, it is still too early to design such jobs with predictable results. MCBP The MCBP is to be involved in producing and utilizing methane derived from coal beds. Agglomeration developments in the iron ore industry of North America are closely related to shifting patterns in commercially acceptable ore grades and even the definition of iron ores. These relationships have occurred mainly during the last 20 years. Many of these changes are an outgrowth of events which involved the history of the Mesabi Range. Although magnetic taconites had been discovered in the Lake Superior area about 1870, they remained unworked in part for lack of concentration methods and a generally unfavorable economic climate. Some 20 years later the rich Mesabi hematites were found beginning the era of direct shipping ores which continued through World War II. These Lake Superior iron ores included reserves of an estimated three billion tons. Following World War II, decreasing ore grades and rising costs began to force the closing of many underground iron mines. The early 501 s saw the beginning of the decline in direct shipping ores and a spurt in production of natural iron concentrate s. However, the market for unprocessed concentrates began to decline in the early 601 s as agglomerated products and foreign ores began to dominate the U. S. market.

Homestake crushing and grinding, practice-was completely revised during the period of 1951-1953. During the conversion, both crushing plants at the head frames the Ross and the Yates, were changes at each plant involved replacing the two 8K gyratories with a rebuilt, The flow sheet single thirty inch gyratory for primary crushing to four inch. The gyratory discharges to a seven foot Symons standard cone crusher set at 1-1/8 inch opening. The cone discharge goes to Tyrock screens fed by vibrating feeders. Screen openings, are l/2 inch by 5 inches: at the Ross. Plant, and 3/8 inch by 5; inches at the Yates. Screen oversize goes to a seven foot Symons cone brusher converted to the short head type; the crusher setting is 5/16 inch. Crusher, discharge; is closed circuited with the Tyrock screens, The above crushing installation delivers a minus 5/8 inch rod mill feed to the mill bins. The crushing revision eliminated the-180 heavy South African type stamps, which had previously reduced the 2 inch crushing plant product to a minus 5/8 inch feed for the 10 rod mills, and 8 ball and pebble.; mills, other revisions in the mill flow sheet, resulted in 3 identical units of about 1350 tons per day, capacity per unit, Each unit consists of an open, circuit 6 foot by 12 foot rod mill, fed from two 24 in by 48 inch vibrating feeders of the four feeders available per unit. A gathering belt delivers the ore discharge of the feeders to the Transportoweigher, which in turn discharge s, into the rod; mill feed spout. Rod Mill discharge is the feed for the 9 foot by 11 foot ball mill, The ball mill is closed circuited with a 16 foot by 30 foot Dorr Classifier. The Homestake make amalgamator, for coarse gold recovery in the ball mill circuit, made&apos; necessary a 36 inch spiral conveyor between the classifier rake discharge and, the combination drum and double scoop feeder on the ball mill See Figure l - the flow sheet of the two stage grinding units.

The ore reserve modelling of stratiform uranium deposits to be mined by selective underground mining methods must be done with consideration of the erratic nature of the ore-forming processes that produced the mineralization. Estimation methods that model the uranium grade as a smooth transition between high-grade and low-grade drill hole intercepts tend to greatly overestimate the ore tonnage. Care must be taken to first establish realtistic ore pod geometries and then estimate the grade of the reserve units within the pods.

At the first workshop on Surface Subsidence Due to Underground Mining (1 981 ) , Yarbrough delivered a paper (1 ) describing the mine subsidence insurance program in Illinois operated as the Illinois Mine Subsidence Insurance Fund (IMSIF) . In this paper we will present claims data and describe changes that have occurred in the Illinois Insurance Code during the first six years the IMSIF has been in existence. The change in the original Illinois Public Act 80-1 41 3 that most affected the public was an amendment increasing the maximum amount of mine subsidence insurance avail- able on a structure from $50,000 to $100,000. Seventy-two counties in Illinois have been undermined for minerals, primarily bituminous coal. In Franklin County (.in the southern part of the state) 36 percent of the land area has been undermined for coal extraction. In St. Clair and Madison Counties , two counties that include the St. Louis Metropolitan area along the western border of the state, 10 percent and 7 percent of the land surface have been undermined. Most of the undermined area in the two counties is beneath urbanized land. In 34 counties, approximately 1 percent or more of the land surface has been undermined (2). The first shaft mine in Illinois was sunk in the city of Belleville (east of St. Louis) in 1842, and the mines of early vintage have initiated the majority of the mine subsidence claims. Data compiled from the first six years reveals that most Illinois mine subsidence events that affect structures occur over abandoned mines where early methods of high- extraction mining practices were used. Maps of these mines operated in the 1800s reveal irregular development of room and pillar areas and poorly defined production areas (panels). Rooms in the mines varied from 15 to 40 feet in width and the pillars varied in width from 5 to 40 feet. The pillars were often long and narrow. Recovery rates in mines that operated prior to 1900 generally averaged 50 per- cent, and extraction rates as high as 80 percent have been documented (2). Some pillar robbing occurred.

Artesian pressures of unusual magnitude occur in the deeper aquifer units beneath a considerable part of southeastern North Carolina and extend into South Carolina. The high pressures were first observed in 1968 in wells near Wilmington that were drilled to "basement" rock and which were screened between depths of about 260 to 300 m (meters). The pressure was recognized by Peek and Heath1 as an anomalous geo-pressure and unrelated to recharge conditions in the region. Since 1973, much new information has been obtained on hydro-geologic conditions in the area and a preliminary report on the deep artesian pressures was published in 1975.2 Most of the basic information has been obtained from groundwater research stations constructed by the Groundwater Section of the North Carolina Department of Natural and Economic Resources as a part of Ground-water studies in the Coastal Plain Region. These stations consist of an exploratory well drilled to basement rock with wells completed in each principal aquifer unit to provide data on aquifer characterestics, water levels and water quality.

There are two basic problems when one attempts to separate a solution of metal ions utilizing a chelation-solvent extraction cascade (commonly called liquid ion exchange). First, it is impossible to produce any great degree of separation unless the separation factor (also called selectivity, which is the ratio of the distribution coefficients) is very large. Second, the richest possible extracted product, using an infinite number of equilibrium stages, is at best only in equilibrium with the feed solution. These factors combined with equipment design considerations have led to a situation where only the most selective chelating agents are applicable to economic industrial operations. The authors know that distillation techniques are used routinely to separate compounds with nearly identical relative volatilities and that there should be a way of operating solvent extraction cascades in an analogous manner to obtain separations of metal ions. The advantage of this approach would be that solutions of metal ions of any desired purity could be obtained even if the separation factor was close to unity. This paper presents this idea and suggests some possible applications.

An automatic microscope has been developed to .measure the size and populations of macerals and minerals in fine coal particles. Differentiations are made on the basis of reflectance. This study is concerned with the size distribution of pyrite inclusions. Most fine coal cleaning processes do not remove pyrite as completely as a straight density separation. Consideration of the pyrite size distribution is suggested as a more accurate method of predicting sulfur reduction by a cleaning process. Analyses of float-sink results and Deister Table operation in terms of pyrite particle sizes are made. Other potential applications of automatic microscopy are also discussed.

Decreasing ore grades and increasing labor and material costs have seriously eroded the economic vitality of many mining operations. Coupled with global economic stagnation and recession in the early 1980&apos;s, these conditions have forced reevaluation of operating strategies and methodologies with the objective of remaining competitive in a world marketplace. A concept offering large potential benefits is hardrock portable crushing and conveying. Implementation of this system at Duval Corporation&apos;s Sierrita open pit copper-molybdenum mine (Figure 1) has significantly reduced mining costs, becoming a major part of Sierrita&apos;s cost reduction strategy. Located 48 km south of Tucson, Arizona, the 209 000 t/d property has one portable 60x89 gyratory ore-crusher in operation with tentative plans for two additional units.

The results from a retrospective study are described in this gaper in which she past development drilling activities were investigated using geostatistics. The purpose of the study was to determine the amount of savings in drilling cost that could have been realized through the optimal placement of sequential drill holes using geostatistics. Out of 144 DDH&apos;s that were in place within the study area, the results showed a possible elimination of 34 DDH&apos;s without any reduction on the confidence interval of the global reserve estimates. If the incremental savings from one drilling campaign to the next were considered, however, the amount of percentage savings were even greater. Other interesting results from this study were; 1) tangible demonstration of the importance of a proper geologic delineation within the study zone, and 2) the robustness of the obtained experimental variograms from the rather early stage in development drilling.

Literature research is an inexpensive, yet effective tool for the direct discovery of ore deposits. Case studies abundantly demonstrate that properties with viable mineralization and *proven reserves have been overlooked, forgotten. or ignored and can be rediscovered by inexpensive literature search techniques Areal studies s as WaIlaby Enterprises Mining District Data Base Program appear to be more effective than traditional commodity studies. The success of such studies depends on the inclusion of Mineral Clairant Questionnaire Data, Mineral Ownership Data, Field Examination Data and the continual updating of all information. Such studies are valuable for proposed or existing Wilderness Area Evaluations.

"BACKGROUND Strata mechanics of three underground coal mines in central Utah were recently studied using a specialized finite element technique [1, 2, 3, 4]. The purpose of these studies was to examine relationships between mining and related seismicity. The longwall mining method was predominant, but room and pillar mining and barrier pillar mining were also used in the mines studied. In every case, high correlation between face advance and seismicity was observed. The specialized finite element technique allows for whole mine subsidence estimation at a kilometer scale and for stress concentration at a meter scale near a working face. Comparisons of observed mine subsidence with model subsidence allows for model verification and justifies detailed analysis of the evolution of stress at seam level. Yielding is expected near a longwall panel face and as the face is advanced the extent of yielding is expected to increase. The total number of element failures in a finite element mine model also increases, so a high correlation with associated seismicity, say, event count, is not so surprising. A brief review of recent coal mine studies in Utah is presented in the sequel. The procedures are given in some detail in application to trona mining. COAL MINES The analysis procedure begins with the geologic column and proceeds to specification of strata properties including elastic moduli and strengths. Joints are an integral part of the geologic model and joint set specifications include dip direction, dip, spacing, stiffness and strength. Spatial variability of strata properties in situ may be taken into account during analysis. Topography is important, especially to Utah coal mines that are developed from outcrop in regions of high relief. Mesh generation follows specification of data input. Finite element analysis is next, followed by reporting of results. In this regard, all finite element computations are based on first principles. No model “calibration” is done that involves adjusting computer input to obtain a fit to mine measurements such as subsidence profiles. Figure 1 illustrates the concept of a dual node – dual mesh finite element concept. Dual nodes are roof and floor nodes in mined areas. These nodes replace the seam. The dual mesh is a much refined mesh with displacement boundary conditions obtained from the big mesh and thus replaces the effect of mining in the region outside the dual mesh. The refined dual mesh allows for details of stress, strain and displacement near a working face of interest. Strata Properties Strata properties include elastic moduli and strengths of intact rock between joints and joint stiffness and strength for each joint set present. Both properties sets may be obtained from laboratory test data, although testing joints poses a sampling problem in the field. The statistical variability observed in laboratory test data, say, in unconfined compressive strength tests is often characterized by much variation. In fact, the coefficient of variation, ratio of standard deviation to mean, is often greater than 35 percent. When sample values are mapped back to the mine location, one may observe spatial variability as properties vary from place to place as shown in Figure 2. Spatial variability may be incorporated into a finite element analysis with probabilistic assignment of properties to elements in accordance with measured variability. The result is a more realistic model of rock in situ."

Storm King Mines began with the concept that the resource potential of thick and steeply pitching seams of the Grand Hogback region of Colorado could be mined profitably. Two large tracts of private land (fee coal) were acquired; approximately 23.8 km2 near Glenwood and 16.2 km2 near Meeker. Figure 1. Although both properties have substantial coal reserves, one has several distinct advantages in developing a competitive mining operation. Table 1 illustrates these advantages. Among the most important considerations from an economical point of view are proximity to railroad, highway, labor force, quality of coal, seam thickness, and source of water. As can be seen, Storm King Mines&apos; property is adjacent to the main line of the D & RGW Railroad, 1-70, and the Colorado River. The cities of New Castle, Glenwood Springs, Silt, Rifle, Carbondale, and Parachute are within short commuting distances and have available skilled labor.

The leaching of heaps or sub-marginal waste ore dumps as it is practiced throughout the Southwest as well as other parts of the world, is the major method of secondary recovery of copper. In 1970, twenty percent of all domestic copper was produced by dump leaching operations (l). In recent years, this method has been successfully extended on a limited scale, for the recovery of uranium from low-grade ores (2). It is inevitable that this technique will be increasingly employed in metal production to satisfy the insatiable demand of our mineral based society. Although dump and heap leaching has been used effectively for some time (3) , its application has been more of an art than a science. Therefore, it is essential that we learn about the important factors and parameters affecting this versatile process so that we may make increasing use of this technique in the future. The dump or heap leaching process encompasses the preparation of ore for-subsequent inplace leaching, the flow of solutions and ionic species through porous rock masses, the leaching of minerals with inexpensive and, if possible, regenerable lixiviants under prevailing conditions of the inplace environment, and the recovery of metals from the pregnant liquors. It is evident that this comprehensive scope of dump or heap leaching falls under the realm of interdisciplinary science and engineering requiring the application of the principles of physics, mineral engineering, hydrology, computer modeling, operations research, economics, and allied disciplines. An increasing number of water pollution control systems are certain to be installed by many industries in the future because of new federal, state, and local government regulations, and because of the rising general concern about the deterioration of our water resources. Extensive engineering, some of it based on methods not yet developed, will be required if these new systems are to provide optimum pollution control. Capital cost, operating cost, and present and future regulatory requirements will be primary factors to be considered by engineers. This paper outlines procedures and gives examples of advanced engineering practices that have achieved efficient pollution control systems in the steel and nonferrous industries.

At our annual meeting in St, Louis, Mo. in February 1961, we presented a comprehensive paper (No. 61-B-22) on the subject of "Blending and Handling of Materials for Agglomeration". In that paper you will find a discussion on the difference between "blending" and "mixing". With regard to "blending" we brought out the facts of its usefulness for the preparation o materials in an agglomerated mass to attain controlled chemical and physical uniformity. "Mixing" was discredited as not being useful for the attainment of uniformity of any kind.

"INTRODUCTION Located in the northeast corner of Zacatecas State, Mexico, the Peñasquito Operation is comprised of the Peñasco and Chile Colorado (Brecha Azul) deposits. Open pit mining (pre-stripping) began in 2010 and full production commenced during 2011. The open pit mines feed both a sulphide concentrator (mill) and a heap leach pad. The project is owned by Goldcorp, Inc. Penasquito is a poly metallic deposit with Au, Ag, Zn and Pb being recovered as payable metals. As a consequence of lower grade ores expected with advancing mine-life Peñasquito is facing a declining metal production profile. To maximize returns and asset value plant modifications including the addition of a carbon pre-float circuit and a pyrite leach circuit to improve recovery are currently being undertaken. This carbon pre-float circuit will enable the recovery of precious and base metals from carbonaceous sediments. This material is currently being stockpiled. With the associated increase in complexity in the process circuit, the requirement of the ore control system to accurately predict ore feed characteristics is critical to maximizing metal recovery at the Penasquito operation. The addition of the carbon pre-float circuit was also a key driver in allowing the Chile Colorado open pit to be developed. These conditions alongside Goldcorp’s drive to increase profitability, and maximize net asset value has created challenges. These challenges are numerous and are multifaceted, however the ability to accurately route materials from the ore control system is critical to site success, and some of these challenges have been overcome by the adoption and implementation of a new ore control (OC) technology. Examples of these technological innovations in the ore control program are discussed in this paper and include improvements in geo-modeling, material routing and reconciliation. Successful implementation of these elements has led to significant improvements in selectivity, performance, and data management, while reducing the variance between planning and execution, thus helping to drive overall improvement across the operation."

Underground mines, penetrating well below the water table, quickly fill with water when abandoned. Ordinarily, these natural cisterns are not thought of as sources of industrial water. Under special circumstance, if chemically treatable, they might become valuable industrial water reservoirs. An example of a group of about 20 mines in a geological and structural setting insuring water entrapment, rapid recharge and a possible minimum of contamination, are the small, compact Belle Ellen and Piper basins in Alabama&apos;s small but second most productive coalfield, the Cahaba. The mines have been abandoned from more than 50 to less than three years. The county now produces about a million tons of coal annually, all from strip mining. Figure 1 shows an idealized cross section of the strata in the Belle Ellen syncline near West Blocton, Bibb County, Alabama. Figure 2, 3 and 4 are maps showing the location of the syncline, other structural features, the outcrop lines of the three principal coalbeds underlying the basin, and the mined-out areas on the three beds (1).

Goldcorp is one of the largest gold producers in the world with projects in South, Central and North America. Goldcorp?s flagship operation is Peñasquito, a world class, polymetallic deposit that started production in 2010 and is one of the largest mines in Mexico. Since the early stages of the project, Goldcorp has used the most advanced technologies available to maximize its value. However, the implementation of optimum mine plans has been challenging to put into practice. This is due to the fact that the mine operation involves more complexity than the plans usually reflect. This challenge is an industry-wide issue that presents opportunities for improvement. This article discusses the mine planning methodologies and procedures used to connect long-, medium- and short-term planning strategies in order to bridge the gap and produce optimum mine plans that can be practically implemented in the field.
