"Current mine control stations are either single-position systems with high engineering effort or all-in-a-box solutions with low integration possibilities of third-party devices. Above all, both approaches are cost-intensive and not feasible for small companies. This paper shall be an inspiration of how to enhance the productivity and monitoring of an existing mining system in a modular way by introducing a proven technique of the ongoing digital revolution: A Wi-Fi network based on the communication protocol OPC UA. The starter kit consists of a single-board computer, a WLAN access point and any electronic sensor. INTRODUCTION The majority of the European mining industry is run by small and medium deposits (Europe Geology, 2017). This is due to the fact that most ore mines in Europe are widely distributed within the continent, are generally small and additionally they are often steeply inclined. Such ore bodies are normally mined with underground mining methods and must be excavated with high selectivity because of their small thickness. That is why the economy of scales, higher efficiency through bigger machines, cannot be used in most deposits in Europe except for lignite mines. It is important to find an alternative possibility to improve the efficiency of European mines for making them competitive internationally. For cost optimization and profit maximization it is necessary to use the trends of industry 4.0 and to broadcast these into the mining industry to reach a technological advantage. The goals of the EU within the Horizon 2020 funded project are to shorten the actualisation of the mine and block model to hours, improve the communication with Through the Earth (TTE) via very- or ultra-low frequency for long-time monitoring of the abandoned workings, and develop a cost-effective mine control station for optimization of mining processes in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) as well. This paper deals specifically with the new approach for data acquisition, transmission and visualisation of a mine. SCADA AND ERP IN MINING There are already many Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) programs on the market, but these are normally not developed for the mining industry. At the moment this leads to three options. • To hire a system integrator, who shall build a complete control station for one mine that requires a high amount of knowledge in programming and cannot be maintained by the mining company itself. • To buy different types of out-of-the-box systems, whereby every system can include some of the used technology. In this case a huge amount of project engineers and operators – at least one per system and shift- is required. • To buy every machine and program from one company including the service contracts."

For sulfide minerals, the presence of dissolved oxygen in the water phase is an influencing factor for separation by flotation. Klassen and Mokrousov(I:217l distinguish three stages of oxygen adsorption; namely, reversible adsorption, activated adsorption and, finally, surface oxidation. While contraversial, limited adsorption of oxygen is believed to improve the interfacial reactivity between collector and mineral. Intensive surface oxidation of sulfide minerals usually results in unsatisfactory flotation with collectors of the xanthate type. The influence of dissolved oxygen in the water phase has received consideration for sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcocite, and covellite(2,3,4,5,6). However, the nature of surface oxidation products of sulfide minerals has received very limited investigation(6,7). Lightly oxidized galena promotes the adsorptive reaction of surfactant (xanthate or dixanthogen). Tolun and Kitchener(8) state that limited interaction occurs between galena and xanthate under relatively reducing conditions. And, that exposure to oxygen raises the electrochemical potential of the galena to that required for reaction with xanthate or dixanthogen. In the latter condition, the galena has an "effective flotation surface". On the other hand, intensive oxidation of galena reduces the chemical reaction with xanthate collectors (9) . Complete flotation with xanthate-type surfactants with increasing oxygen content in the water phase has been determined to have the following sulfide mineral sequence(3): galena, pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and arseno-pyrite. The work of Cusack(4) suggests that some threshold amount of oxygen is necessary for flotation to occur, but heavy oxidation hinders flotation with xanthates. According to Tolun and Kitchener(8) catalytic oxidation of xanthate to dixanthogen occurs. The purpose of this paper is to describe the roles of cement and concrete in construction in general and, more specifically, as construction materials of the Southeast. For purpose of this discussion, the Southeast will include the geographic area composed. of the following 13 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia. In one sense, cement by itself is not a construction material. It is a finely ground manufactured mineral product, usually gray in color. Cement is mixed with water and sand, gravel, crushed stone, or other aggregate to form concrete, the rock-like substance that is the most widely used construction material in the world. Because cement is seldom used by itself for construction but is usually a component of concrete, there is no such thing. as a "cement" sidewalk, a "cement" highway, or "cement" building. Neither is "portland" a brand name. It is a generic term used to describe any cement that hardens in the presence of water and is made to standard specifications .. For all practical construction purposes, therefore, all cement is "portland." The name "port-land" was selected by the English inventor of the product in 1824 because concrete made with his product resembled natural building stone quarried on Portland, an English island. Although portland cement is not the final material which finds its way into completed construction, as the principal component of the most widely used construction material in the world, the location and process of its manufacture warrant some discussion

Spirals have become one of the most popular methods for treating fine coal. Unfortunately, spirals tend to produce an undesirably high specific gravity cut-point and often misplace significant amounts of coal and/or rock. In the present study, a process-engineering tool known as linear circuit analysis was used to identify problems with traditional spiral circuits and to suggest alternative configurations. These analyses indicate that a modified rougher-cleaner circuit incorporating a middlings recycle stream offers the best option for improving performance while maintaining a reasonable circulating load. In light of this finding, a full-scale test circuit was installed and evaluated at an existing preparation plant. Data obtained from the plant tests indicate that the new spiral circuit can simultaneously reduce cut-point and improve separation efficiency. Preliminary economic analyses show that the new circuit provides an attractive payback on the capital investment.

Numerous lead-zinc-barite-fluorite ore deposits, with simple mineralogy and roughly concordant with bedding, are found widely distributed all over the world, having been denominated and well described as "stratiform deposits" or "strata-bound ore bodies", not having any genetic relationship. During several years, its origin has been discussed, without getting to general agreement regarding the main mining districts of this type. Through studies made of large stratiform deposits in the United States, Europe and Russia, it has been found that there are, within this classification, syngenctic diagenetic and epigenetic ore bodies. During the Symposium about the genesis of the stratiform lead-zinc-fluorite-barite deposits, carried out in New York in 1966, Frank G. Snyder (1), presented an excellent analysis of the theories of the origin of these deposits and of the evaluation of the criteria regarding classification. As per his definitions (Table 1), "a deposit is syngenetic if formed by processes similar to and simultaneously with the enclosing rock, epigenetic if introduced into a pre-existing rock and a diagenetic origin implies deposition of metals with the host sediments but with recrystallization, rearrengement and limited migration".

A common problem in mineral processing and chemical engineering is the need to estimate flow rates and/or weight ratios involved with engineering operations for which it is inherently difficult to directly measure stream weights. Simple examples of this situation include stream separators (a classifier operating on a particle flow) and stream mixers (the mixing of new feed and circulating load in a ball mill circuit). Often in these types of operations, it is possible to sample the streams involved to get approximate component analyses (e.g. size distributions of solid streams, chemical composition of chemical streams). In this paper various formulae are developed which can be used to estimate stream flow rates or weight ratios given information on the stream components. The type and level of experimental error present in the stream component analyses does have an important bearing on the numerical values (and reliability) of the weight ratios calculated by the various formulae. A simple but theoretically sound method is shown for selecting appropriate estimation formulae for any given engineering operation. The derived formulae are applied to sets of experimental classification data for illustration purposes.

INTRODUCTION Early rock-bolting practice usually consisted of ran¬domly installing bolts, using hand-held drilling equip¬ment such as air-leg mounted sinkers or stopers. As bolting technology evolved, the practice of installing uniform bolt patterns was developed, utilizing random bolt installation as required within the uniform pattern. The uniform rock-bolting technique, when used as the principal method of rock support, requires drills and jumbos designed specifically for rock bolting. This equipment is similar to conventional face drilling machines, except that the jumbos can orient the drills to obtain any necessary bolting angle; often, this means bolts may be installed at or near perpendicular to the centerline of the drift or stope opening. Fig. I shows a typical rubber-tired rock-bolting jumbo of the type commonly used in drifts and room-and-pillar mining. Modern rock-bolting jumbos are capable of drilling the required holes, inserting rockbolts, and torquing them to proper levels. Jumbos also are available for use with resin-anchored bolts. Probably the most unusual of this type utilizes a rotating bolt turret that carries the rock drill, resin charging unit, and the bolt in a single mechanism. Once the turret is loaded with the resin and bolt, further manual effort is not re¬quired. Drilling and bolt placement are accomplished by the operator from a station remote from the bolt site. Fig. 2 shows this turret device. Roof-bolting jumbos are available mounted on rail, crawler, or rubber-tired chassis. Various types of rock drills are used. Depending upon the type of rock, these may include rotary, percussion, or rotary-percussion drills. Fig. 3 shows a typical rail-mounted jumbo. INTRODUCTION Public opinion, over the effect of industrial development on the environment, has required government to institute guidelines for the protection of the environment both during the development of and after the decommissioning of mines. In no other area of mining has this requirement been more consistently applied in recent times than in the development of uranium mines. Uranium mines have been a focal point because of the very real uncertainties associated with the detrimental effects of radionuclides and the possible hazards of radiation. In order to determine if there is an environmental effect caused by a development or the storage of the mine waste as tailings, it is necessary to know what the quality of the environment was prior to the production of the tailings. This is the reason for baseline data programs. It is neither technically nor economically feasible to completely define the environment in any given region. Therefore, judgement decisions must be made prior to the development as to what aspects of the environment are more likely to be affected by the presence of the tailings, and to what degree. These decisions have evolved over a period of time based on information generated from existing facilities, scientific research, and the development of strong public opinions. This process is not static, but evolves with the growth of information and the technological developments which permit greater control of industrial pollution and waste management. A well-designed baseline program will reflect changes in science, technology and public attitude, even in advance of government regulations to enforce policy changes. Today's subject of discussion, "OSHA AND ITS PROBLEMS", must be covered in the time allotted with a slight tongue in cheek approach, for if one is to believe that the "problems of OSHA" can be covered in a twenty minute review, he, himself, has one of three problems: 1. He has residual combat fatigue left over from World War II. 2. He is an egomaniac. 3. He is afflicted with both of the above. Clearly, the difference between divinity and humanity lies in their work. All human endeavor is plagued by errors and omissions, and unless one would be so facetious as to equate bureaucracy with godliness, our government-sponsored ventures seem to receive more than their share of missive missles with which to combat the ills of our society. Coming from an industry known for its undertaking of gargantuan projects, I feel capable of looking at things from the big picture perspective. No one would deny that the massive influx of government, both in the monetary and supportive personnel roles, has accomplished much. But only we, as tunnel constructors, have moved countless mountains of muck, placed endless yards of concrete and engaged the public on numerous fronts and in spite of all, at times have even made a profit! Profit! What a dirty word in our society today. It makes one shrink back from the filthy overtones dripping with the cloying scent of decay. Never shall we judge the success of our government programs with such a slimy yardstick as profit. No, for that which has been conceived in the bowers of Camelot, the measure must be more elevating and inspiring. Something to bring a proud bearing to our efforts! The Newmont roasting plant in Carlin, Nevada, commenced operating in December 1994. Over the years, refractory ores and pyrite concentrates from different gold deposits constituted the feed to the facilities. Historical plant performance indicated that the roasting temperature was the main variable affecting the structural characteristics of the calcine, which in turn affected the recovery of gold by cyanidation. Gold recovery as a function of roaster temperature has been closely monitored since October 2000. The original design temperature was 550° C. Lower roaster temperatures of around 500° C resulted in a gold recovery increase of more than six percent. This increase was directly related to an increase of the surface area of the calcine. The implementation of an ?intelligent? process control system helped significantly in achieving steady low roasting temperatures, thus obtaining high gold recoveries of 92 to 93 percent. Under these conditions, several roasting campaigns with high-arsenic-containing ores were conducted, which resulted in a significant decrease in gold recovery. The reduced gold recovery was caused by the loss of surface area (e.g., porosity) of the calcine as the arsenic content of the roaster feed increased.

The Climax Mine of AMAX's Climax Molybdenum Division is currently producing approximately 34,000 tons of molybdenum ore per day from two underground levels (see Figure I), and initial design is underway for the next deeper (1200) level. The aim of this report is to present the methods of site evaluation used at Climax for cavability determinations and underground support design. Climax succeeds with its panel caving system of mining (Julin, 1973) (Figure 2) largely because of the presence of pervasive geologic structural discontinuities. The stockwork ore body at Climax was formed by the multiple intrusion of mid-Tertiary rhyolitic magmas into Precambrian granite, schist and gneiss, and the hydrothermal emplacement of molybdenite into the network of fractures that were generated during the forceful upward intrusion of magma. Subsequently, intrusive events that were more deeply seated refractured the overlying, ore- bearing stock and propagated a complex system of axial and radial fractures. Post-ore movement along the Mosquito Fault (Wallace, 1968) and its associated stranded shear zones further fractured the ore body and disordered the existent geologic structure. The result of these structural events is a brittle, crystalline ore body that is transected by a complex pattern of faults, shear zones, and joints that augment cave initiation and enhance comminution of the ore blocks. Generalizations can be made about the structural trends within the ore deposit (King, 1946; Kendorski, 1973), however, the intensity and orientation of geologic structure is by no means uniform throughout the ore body. The relative intensities of silicic and argillic alteration are also highly variable (Vanderwilt and King, 1955). As a consequence, no single rock-mass model suffices as a standard for mine design, and site characterization for cavability and support design is a continuous process.

INTRODUCTION The Morenci-Metcalf district is located on the southern slope of the white Mountains in Greenlee County, Arizona. Both porphyry copper deposits are four to six miles northwest of Clifton, the county seat, and the new Metcalf mine is situated approximately one mile northeast of the Morenci open pit (Figure 1). Chase Creek, a south-flowing tributary of the San Francisco River, dissects the district and separates the two ore bodies. More than 1,200 exploration and development drill holes have been completed in the district and the Morenci-Metcalf ore bodies have been delineated on a 400-foot grid. Recently initiated drilling programs have revealed new data about deeper protore and associated hypogene alteration. This information, correlated with surface mapping and petrographic studies, was utilized to propose a plausible geochronologic sequence for this region. The reasoning behind this study has been helpful in locating new ore beneath leached capping indicative of only protore mineralization. The scope of this paper is to establish a practical solution to a highly theoretical problem of ore genesis and to familiarize the reader with stratigraphic, structural, and mineralogic events responsible for localizing ore in this district. Continued research will possibly alter the proposed time span and relative displacements, but it is doubtful that the order of events will vary significantly. The hierarchical relationship between three broad kinds of grinding models for a spatially homogeneous, linear, time-invariant batch grinding system are first established. Limiting and asymptotic arguments for arriving at approximate but simpler models are employed in all three cases. These parsimonious models -provide alternate and, in some respects, more incisive and convenient tools for the analyses of grinding processes and simulation of comminution circuits. In the discrete-size, discrete- time class of models, a reduced mill matrix is derived, which is seemingly adequate for those grinding circuits whose identification otherwise is difficult because of limitations on the quantity of data and its quality. In discrete-size, continuous-time types of models, parameter lumping has been employed for obtaining a G-H solution which is quite accurate and exceptionally useful for graphical display of data, model verification, and parameter estimation and simulation. In continuous-size, continuous-time models, a similarity transformation is used for solving the integrodifferential equation of grinding. This solution provides a unified framework for a number of apparently diverse empirical grinding phenomena such as self-preserving behavior of ground particle size distributions and energy laws.

The Mount Hope stockwork molybdenum exposit, Eureka County, Nevada, occurs in a small igneous cauldron complex 32 to 38 mybp in age. The deposit is characterized by alteration zones and mineralized shells symmetrically distributed around multiple intrusives. For samples from the 25 000 meters of 1981-82 drilling, an appraisal of error in in-house sample preparation and in commercial assaying has been made. After splitting, drill core is crushed and reduced in volume (8:1 at 10-mesh, 8:1 at 70-mesh, 6:1 at 200-mesh) to supply 25 grams of 200-mesh pulp for replicate analyses. A 0.5 g portion of the pulp is used for dissolution and atomic absorption analyses. Factors which initially generated unacceptable data variances have been minimized by planning, repeat analyses, introduction of standards, and routine monitoring. Assuming that error between replicate assays defines a Gaussian distribution with its average ideally equal to zero, precision (from preparation including core splitting and analysis of 8400 pairs of molybdenum samples) is on the order of + 25%. The error distribution is not biased. Accuracy is approximately 4% lower than absolute as determined by replicate assays of commercially prepared samples.

A good understanding of the hardness of ore being handled and processed in a mining operation can significantly improve operational efficiencies by providing valuable data to support decision-making through the mining value chain (drilling, blasting, comminution). This study presents the results from the application of Machine Learning (ML) to predict rock hardness using various geophysical and geochemical features. Core samples from a mine site were logged using a multi-sensor core logging system. Measurements including ultrasonic p-wave and s-wave velocity, elemental concentration via portable XRF, and Leeb Hardness, were measured every 2 cm along the length of the core. The ML model was set up to predict the Leeb Hardness using the elemental concentrations and ultrasonic velocities as predictors. The Leeb Hardness values were grouped into three bins and used as a classification target for the ML models. Various ML models, including linear regression, support vector machines, decision tree, XGBoost, Random Forest, K-Nearest Neighbors, and Naïve Bayes were tested. The model performance demonstrated that the Random Forest and XGBoost models produced the highest accuracy of 74-91%. Random forest and XGBoost were then selected to perform regression models to estimate a Leeb hardness value rather than a hardness class. These models were able to estimate the Leeb hardness value by 4.57-4.87 % error.

Based on the geological conditions of the 15,600 working face in Pingba Mine, this paper establishes the mechanical model of the stress distribution in the pre-working face under the influence of mining pressure based on a hemispherical stress distribution theory. The analytical formula for the stress distribution is determined. A numerical model for the mining pressure under the influence of key layer is also constructed, and dynamic stress interruptions under various roof-cutting relief schemes in different horizontal positions are simulated. The stress distribution of the stope under different pressure relief schemes is analyzed and compared with the theoretical results. Results show that blasting roof cutting blocks the transmission of the abutment pressure to the working surface to the coal and rock mass in front of the working face, reducing the significant working face mining pressure influence range, which decreases as blasting pressure relief position moves toward the working face. Stress accumulation in the coal in front of the working face also increases as the blasting pressure relief position moves toward the working surface. Engineering practice results show that blasting cutting can effectively block the propagation of mining pressure, and the stress impact range is shortened by approximately 1/3.

Performance data from phosphate plants are often untrustworthy because of difficulties associated with highly variable feeds and unstable equipment operation. In some cases, this problem is further compounded by improper sampling procedures and unreliable laboratory analyses. Questionable data often lead to misleading conclusions that result in lost productivity and profits. Data reliability may be checked using mass balances, but the mathematics associated with this procedure can be overwhelming when multiple data sets or complex circuits are evaluated. To overcome this problem, a simple spreadsheet-based mass balance program has been developed specifically for plant operators. To use this program, operators simply enter a description of their circuit and input the assay values (e.g., % BPL, % Insol, etc.) for each stream. The program then generates the best estimates of the assay values and flags values that may be unreliable. The spreadsheet is specifically designed to be easy to use and requires no knowledge of statistics or programming. This manuscript reviews the mass balance problem and describes how spreadsheet programs can be used to evaluate plant data. An example problem involving the analysis of data around a two-stage phosphate flotation circuit is presented.

The mining of underground coal presents several hazards for miners, including the risk of an explosion fueled by methane gas and coal dust. Methane gas, produced during coal formation, can continuously leak into old workings and build up through its lower explosive limit. Underground coal mines are required to maintain safe conditions, either by ventilating old workings or sealing them off using approved methods. Seals must be designed to withstand instantaneous pressures for a minimum of four seconds. A design strength of at least 50 pounds per square inch (psi) is required for atmospheres monitored and maintained inert, 120 psi for non-inert or not monitored, and greater than 120 psi for special cases. Due to the high cost and testing environment availability, most mine seals are designed through calculations and computer modeling and not subjected to full-scale testing in a representative environment. High pressure is not the only threat that mine seals may be exposed to. During an underground explosion, pressure waves and gas expansion may propel common mine items and objects to a high velocity, generating enough energy to damage mine seals and reduce their strength. Damaged mine seals may fail to contain their rated pressure, allow high pressure gas and fumes to vent through the seal during an explosion, or allow gasses to leak through the seal later after an explosion has occurred. This paper examines the effects of high velocity impacts of common mine materials and items on a reinforced mine seal rated to 120 psi.

As the mining industry begins efforts to examine the feasibility of extraterrestrial resource utilization, the extraction and processing of icy regolith containing water and other volatile materials will be the initial focus for future expansion of capabilities. Pure water is essential for human consumption, and a source of oxygen and hydrogen. The latter, along with the volatile materials, lend themselves to the creation of fuels that may be used for further space exploration at distances not currently feasible. For any extraterrestrial scoping project, the transport of materials to geoscientists remains virtually impossible. Therefore, analysis must be done in-situ, possibly millions of miles away from the nearest human. To address the need for geologic resource estimation in the absence of geoscientists, an infrared framework has been developed for the analysis of water ice content in simulants of permanently shaded lunar regolith. This framework relies on a convolutional neural network model for the rapid analysis of percent water ice content in samples, at which point standard geostatistical methods may be employed.

The use of polysilicates for treating heavy metals in soils and mining sludges is discussed. Results of the treatment are given for soil contaminated in a metal scrap yard operation and for copper mining processing sludges. The types of metals of concern are arsenic, lead, copper, nickel, cadmium, and zinc. The application of the treatment is predicated on the mixture and relative concentrations of the metals as well as the material matrix. Reductions in soluble concentrations (STLC or TCLP) of one to two orders of magnitude can be achieved with relatively small additions of silicates and cementitious materials.
