The Homestake Gold Mine at Lead, South Dakota, has been proposed as the host site for the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory. The laboratory will house neutrino experiments in mine workings at the 7400-foot depth, as well as research in geomicrobiology, rock mechanics, and ground-water flow. Initial plans for the laboratory were developed in 2000 after Homestake Mining Company announced the closing of the underground gold mine. Homestake’s owner, Barrick Gold Corporation, had agreed to donate the mine for a laboratory if it could be protected from environmental liability. That initial agreement was delayed, and Barrick turned off the mine’s pumps in 2003, allowing lower levels of workings to begin to flood with water. In early 2004, the Governor of South Dakota signed an agreement with Barrick that would indemnify the company and eventually transfer ownership of the mine to a state laboratory authority. South Dakota’s governor also announced plans to ask the state legislature for funds to help in the initial construction of the laboratory. A consortium of scientists from several states is currently preparing a detailed laboratory proposal for the National Science Foundation.

Development of the Northeast Layback of Barrick’s Betze-Post open pit commenced in June 2000 and was successfully completed to a height of 400m (1,300 ft) in January 2003. Following a brief exploration drilling campaign at the toe of the final slope, in-pit waste rock backfilling commenced, which will ultimately buttress the final wall. Instability initially occurred in late 2000, above the 5040 Level, as the slope height approached 120m (400 ft). As mining reached the 4680 Level, significant deformation was experienced over a slope height of 230m (760 ft). Slope stability was managed and targeted reserve recovery was achieved by executing complicated modifications of the mine plan, including splitting layback development, well placed offloading cuts, step-outs and mid-slope waste rock buttresses. Decision on timing of these modifying events was often dictated by review of deformation magnitudes and rates determined from continuous slope monitoring records. Design modifications were developed through continuing interpretive refinement of structural geology controls and groundwater distribution, and through stability re-assessments. This document presents an overview of the geological setting and material and strength conditions of the northeast sector of the Betze-Post open pit, followed by development experience leading to design and development of the Northeast Layback. Rock mechanics modeling, design details and geotechnical performance monitoring are then presented. Development experience, stabilizing adjustments to the original design and safety procedures for development and exploration activities are described. The document is finalized with conclusions and acknowledgements.

Most accidents are the result of risk taking. They can happen anywhere. Our coal industry categorizes accidents by type, occupation, commodity, age, every way you can imagine. We now know, how many were injured and when, for all the different types of accidents. We have ask ourselves many times, why are we having accidents, how can we stop the accidents and fatals in our industry? Present numbers and projections do not show that this will happen. Serious accidents can result in fatalities. Fatal accident can be prevented, and the coal industry can achieve zero fatalities. How soon this happens, depends on a great number of factors. I will discuss accidents and reasons for us having accidents in an attempt to get to the root causes. The historical perspective will be touched on, and the risk and analysis of accidents will be probed.

Draglines often work from a position on the active highwall or spoil side bench to remove undisturbed waste material and spoil in the previously mined pit. To protect the dragline crew members and the machine, it is necessary that the highwall remain stable while the dragline is present on the bench. In the past several years, we have been involved in determining the causes for highwall failures that included the dragline. While there have been no injuries and limited dragline damage with these incidents, the potential certainly exists for a more serious outcome. In all cases, the operation had completed a geotechnical study to support the ground control plan and pit designs. However, all these incidents included aspects that would not likely have been identified in studies to determine highwall and spoil designs to support ground control procedures. In general, these events included aspects that were localized and would have been difficult to identify in initial slope stability studies either observationally or during the soil testing and modelling efforts. Although the authors do not have quantitative evidence of this, it does seem there has been an increased number of events in recent years. This may be due to loss of institutional knowledge, mining in more challenging areas, or simply an increase in localized variation. This paper will describe some of the issues we have seen and what the causes of failure were. It becomes clear that avoiding similar incidents in the future requires on-going observation and inspection of active highwalls and spoil benches to try and identify local variability and impact on mining. The information can proactively be used to update stability modeling of any concerning issues to determine likelihood of problems and to develop solutions.

In the last four years, 2007~2010, 9 out of 24 metal/nonmetal underground mine fatalities were caused by ground fall across United States of America (Mine Safety & Health Administration, MSHA). To reduce or eliminate incidents/accidents caused by ground fall, this paper clarified how to design and select ground support based on different ground conditions, how to use mine ground support standards, what geotechnical engineers and underground operators should do to keep mine production free of ground failures.

ASFINAG is responsible for the construction and operation of the Austrian highway system. It is approx. 2,400 km of highways and 65 tunnels with a total length of 200 km including the Tauern Tunnel. In order to improve the documentation of the tunnel construction, ASFINAG chose to use a state of the art tunnel scanning system to record the various stages of construction: excavation, initial shotcrete lining, smoothing layer and final cast in place concrete lining. The geometric and photogrammetric documentation is provided on a daily basis to all par-ties involved. This innovative concept provides accurate & complete information in real time. The tunnel scanner documentation of the 2nd tube at the 6.4 km long Tauern Tunnel will be presented in this paper as a part of the survey contract.

A machine that improves safety during the cutting of boxholes (ore-passes) and travelways in underground mining operations has delivered impressive results in trials conducted at a South African platinum mine. The technology is a joint effort by Sandvik Mining and Construction and platinum mining company Lonmin. The ABH 1600 boxhole borer was built by Voest-Alpine Bergtechnik, Sandvik’s Austrian subsidiary. It was delivered to the Lonmin Eastern platinum mine in February 2005. There, it was deployed underground on the Number 8 Level (320 m or 1,050 ft below the surface) at the mine’s Newman incline shaft.

The Andacollo gold mine is located near the town of Andacollo (population 14,000 people) in Chile’s region four. It is about 56km (35 miles) by paved road from the coastal city of La Serena. Santiago is about480 km (300 miles) south. Site elevation varies between 1,000 and 1,280 m(3,300 and 4,200 ft). The climate at the Andacollo site is moderate but arid. Average annual rainfall is only 130mm (5 in.). Because there is little rain and the temperature varies only a few degrees (14 to 24 C or 57 to 75F), there are no problems with freezing, solution dilution or pad saturation. The climatic conditions are ideal for heap leaching.

Silver Bell produces about 22,000T of fine copper annually from low-grade chalcocite and oxidized copper ore that is recovered by sulfuric acid leaching and SX-EW processing. The current mineable reserves are 146 million short tons averaging 0.39% Cu, at a 0.15% cutoff. Silver Bell utilizes two types of mining methods to develop the low-grade reserves: (1) a conventional blast, load and haul method for run-of-mine leach ore, and (2) rubblization of material on the margins of existing pits. Rubble leach ore is blasted, terraced with a bulldozer, and leached in place. Mining and/or rubble leaching is currently active in four separate pits. Laramide-age intrusive rocks host porphyry copper mineralization at Silver Bell. Quartz monzonite porphyry dikes and stocks, mafic-poor equigranular granite (alaskite), and sub-volcanic dacite porphyry are the predominant host rocks. Most of the ore currently mined comes from near-horizontal enrichment zones containing veinlets and disseminated grains of pyrite and chalcopyrite rimmed by chalcocite. Conversion from a milling operation to a leach only operation allowed for a much lower cutoff grade than was historically used at Silver Bell. Mine geologists were able to increase copper resources by drilling exploration targets that were previously interpreted to provide lower-grade mineralization below cutoff-grade for milling. Geologic parameters that effect the distribution of rubble and mineable leach ore include: ore grade and thickness, variable alteration styles in intrusive host rocks that affect fragmentation during blasting, acid consuming carbonate wallrocks (reactive skarn) which influence leach solution pH, solution flow paths and drainage, presence of leachable oxide mineralization in non-reactive skarn, and depth to hypogene mineralization which is currently uneconomic. Geologic parameters are used to predict rubble bench limits, vary blast hole spacing for consistent fragmentation, and correct errors in mineral zone classification based solely on blast hole assays. An expansion-drilling program has identified approximately 150 million tons of new leachable copper resources with an average grade of 0.35% Cu.

The last 12 months has seen the construction of the first Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM excavated tunnel in New Zealand on the Project Hobson sewer storage tunnel for Watercare Services Limited, with the concurrent excavation of the second EPB tunnel on the Rosedale Outfall project for North Shore City Council. Together these tunnels involve a total length of 6km and follow an 8 year pause in TBM activity in Auckland. TBM performance on these two projects is thus of significant interest as there are four major tunneling projects totaling over NZ$8B being planned for Auckland, in similar ground conditions. Auckland?s bedrock is a weak sandstone/siltstone (East Coast Bays Formation), subject to infilled paleovalleys. The geology in the region has been significantly influenced by volcanic activity; 49 volcanoes are present within 20km of the city centre. The paper describes the design and construction challenges for the projects, including TBM performance, ?sticky spoil? management, and risks associated with basalt lava flows and two paleovalleys. Watercare?s Project Hobson also saw the successful implementation of a Geotechnical Baseline Report?one of the first uses of this type of document in Australasia. Rosedale Outfall is designed for high internal water pressures with varying hydraulic flows, with the risk of exfiltration explicitly addressed.

Developing natural aggregate resources (sand, gravel, and stone) creates environmental impacts. A systems analysis method has been designed to characterize the components of the environmental system, identify potential impacts to those systems, and evaluate the extent of those impacts. The step-wise method consists of problem definition, data collection, preliminary conceptualization and characterization, additional data collection, data analysis, and refinement. The method requires analyzes of various systems making up the environment, including land surface, geomorphic, subsurface, and groundwater systems. After system characterization is complete, the method focuses on identifying and evaluating potential environmental impacts to determine acceptable mining strategies.

The ability to accurately model the movement of grade boundaries during a typical bench blast would be of significant benefit to mine operators. The movement of grade boundaries during the blasting process may have significant impact on grade recovery if not accounted for. The paper describes the preliminary stages of a research project which combines numerical blast models and conventional mine planning software to allow practical use of the results of a numerical blast simulation. A two dimensional bench blast is simulated using the Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC). The results of the simulation are used to provide input to the Surpac mine planning package which can be used to generate grade control plans.

The International Tunnelling and Under-ground Space Association (ITA) is a nonprofit organization that represents all aspects of the tunneling and underground space industry worldwide. The United States has had a prominent role in ITA since its 1974 inception. ITA was formed as a result of a worldwide survey conducted in the early 1970s by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Bill Lucke was in charge of tunnels for the U.S. Federal Railroad Administration and was a member of the organizing committee that created ITA. He became a vice president of ITA. Jack Lemley served as President of ITA from 1983 to 1986. Dick Robbins was very active in ITA and served for many years both as a member of the Executive Council and as First Vice President. Harvey Parker has served as President of ITA for the last three years and will serve as Past President for the next three years. Moreover, there are many individuals and companies from the United States that have contributed significantly to the activities and the success of ITA. There have been several active Working Group Animateurs from the U.S. and there have been significant contributions from many individuals as well as companies from the U.S. Several engineers from the U.S. are currently serving ITA in a leadership role. The Underground Construction Association of SME (UCA of SME) is the official organization representing the U.S.. SME Executive. [ ] Director Dave Kanagy and UCA President Tom Peyton were instrumental in the U.S.?s role at ITA during the last few years. Peyton has been the official delegate to ITA. Henry Russell and Christian Ingerslev are both Animateurs of ITA working groups. This article will introduce ITA and its activities. A subsequent article will describe the ITA in more detail and will discuss the significant role the U.S. has played in the development and success of ITA.

7.1 INTRODUCTION The circulating fluid (generally an aqueous cyanide solution) is the major active component of heap leaching. This solution extracts precious metal from the heap and is then processed to recover the precious metal. The solution continuously recycles through the heap to recover more precious metal. With each cycle through the heap, water and chemicals are lost. Make-up water and chemicals must be added to balance losses from evaporation, seepage, entrainment, and chemical reaction in the heap, as well as any other processing losses. Adding more water than needed can result in a build-up of water as inventory in the various ponds and can eventually require that water be discharged from the operation. This is an extremely undesirable condition, and can often be very expensive in both investment in water treating facilities and operating costs. Most heap leach facilities operate under a zero discharge permit; thus, a situation requiring water discharge can result in permit violation. Chemical solution control must be managed to maintain the optimum pH, dissolved oxygen content, and cyanide content, while preventing "scaling". Calcium-based precipitation is a common scaling problem in mill reclaim waters. A buildup of these deposits can result in severe reduction of water flow, loss of pump efficiency and eventual interruption in metal production. In addition, problems of plugged sprinkler heads, blinded leach pads and fouled carbon (in carbon recovery systems) can be and often are experienced when scale control is not maintained. The remainder of this chapter discusses chemical solution control and scaling prediction/prevention in the context of a "closed" system. Sizing of ponds to accommodate precipitation and runoff, collection systems, and other similar design considerations are not discussed here. These topics are deferred to later chapters, e.g. Chapter 10 considers design of collection systems while Chapter 12 discusses pond sizing. 7.2 CHEMICAL CONTROL Chemical composition of the circulating solution must be controlled by the operator if the heap leaching process is to be successful. Introduction The term kaolin is derived from kauling, a Chinese word meaning high ridge. This was the name of a hill in China where kaolin was first mined several hundred years ago (Murray, 1976). Other common names used for kaolin include clay and China Clay. Clay technically has a broader meaning and could refer to bentonite and ball clay as well as kaolin. China clay, as a descriptive term, apparently results from kaolin's origin. But it could also be due to a significant historical use in ceramic applications. The terms kaolin and clay will be used interchangeably in this analysis because of the common practice of using these terms in the paper industry. Major reasons for kaolin's wide-spread industrial usages center on kaolinite's physical features of good color, low viscosity, and inertness. Kaolin is described as a hydrous aluminum silicate with an approximate composition of 2H2O • A12O3 . 2SiO2. A new version of the product is calcined clay with modified hydration content. It is gaining widespread use. Components of any particular kaolin, in addition to alumina and silica, are viewed as impurities. The more values deposits and, hence, higher priced kaolin products are those of the highest purity. Kaolin is the most widely used mineral in paper manufacturing throughout the world. Key production centers are located in England and the US. Most of the Tatter's production is located in Georgia. The key markets for Georgia kaolin are paper markets - both paper coating and paper filling. These paper markets extend throughout the world, not just to domestic markets. In fact, export markets are second in size only to domestic paper markets for Georgia's producers of kaolin. Just as the paper markets are important for kaolin producers, kaolin is an important raw material for papermakers. Compared to the other three major pigments - titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, and talc - kaolin's 1984 tonnage for papermaking represented 85% of the total. Even though titanium dioxide's unit value is much higher, kaolin's estimated total 1984 value still represented 51% of total dollars spent by papermakers for the four pigments. Kaolin grades- are briefly defined using particle size and brightness as principal means of classification. Likewise, grades of papers using kaolin are defined using the American Paper Institute's guidelines. From these definitions, associated kaolin grades used in particular grades of paper are reviewed. Special emphasis is placed on how qualities desired in certain papers are achieved through the use of specialized kaolin grades. Enhanced gravity separation appears to be one of the most promising methods for processing all types of <200-µm coal feeds and tailings. Systems based on this technology are reviewed, and the results of investigations based on C900 Multi-Gravity Separator tests conducted to assess the treatment of <200-µm, extremely difficult-to-wash coal settling pond tailings are presented. Multi-Gravity Separator processing tests of ultra-fine tailings with a high clay particle size content (22.6% <10 µm and 60.1% <40 µm) and a 69.56% ash content show that this material can be effectively treated after desliming (<10 µm) of clay-size particles to produce a coal with a 20.6% ash at a separator combustible material recovery of 69.3%. Desliming is shown to be critical in reducing coal ash content and combustible material recovery. Similar improvements are anticipated in the recovery and separation pro-cesses for other enhanced gravity separation systems from the desliming of feeds. Although not a conventional form of treating Multi-Gravity Separator data, the existence of well-defined polynomial relationships based on the product of drum shake amplitude and shake frequency relative to product coal recovery, product ash content and yields at varying wash water flows is demonstrated. Low-amplitude and intermediate- to high-frequency bed agitation are shown to produce optimum ash reduction results.

Extraction of Al(III) from aqueous sulfuric acid solutions into organic Cyanex 272®-carbon tetrachloride systems was investigated from a multi-component mixture containing aluminum, cobalt and nickel. Al(III) extraction efficiency was quantitative with 1.0 M Cyanex 272® in two stages at an aqueous: organic (A:O) phase ratio of 1:1 and an equilibrium pH of 3.2. The stripping of Al(III) from the loaded organic (LO) with different acids indicated sulfuric acid to be the best stripping agent. More than 99% stripping of Al(III) from the LO was achieved using 2 M H2SO4 at an A:O phase ratio of 1:1 in a single stage. The stoichiometry of the extracted species of Al(III) was determined by the slope analysis method. The extraction reaction proceeded via the cation exchange mechanism and the extracted species was assumed to be AlA3?3HA, where HA refers to the dimeric and A the anionic form of the extractant, Cyanex 272®. The extraction of Al(III) was studied in the presence of various ions to ascertain the tolerance limit of individual ions.

PT Freeport Indonesia’s Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) is one of three operating cave mines at the Grasberg mine complex. The DMLZ is situated in the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS). It is set 500 m below the operating DOZ mine and located approximately 1,500 m below the surface, making it one of the world’s deepest panel caving operations. Initial undercutting of the DMLZ commenced in the second half of 2015 and has expanded to more than 120,000 m2. High pre-mining stresses and the changes associated with caving, combined with a strong and brittle rock mass, led to significant seismicity and rock bursting. Stress and seismic management are the main challenges for the operation and have evolved significantly from initial undercutting to the present. Considerable amounts of empirical data associated with ground response have been collected, evaluated and combined with historical lessons learned from the Intermediate Ore Zone (IOZ) and Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mines, which are located within the EESS. This has provided an improved understanding of how the various geological, geotechnical and mine design criteria relate to one another. Additionally, the information has allowed for the development and implementation of improved strategies for stress and seismic management in the DMLZ. This paper describes how these learnings have driven changes in mine geometry, layout, and support systems. Through comprehensive monitoring and detailed inspections, positive changes have been seen in the ground response, leading to an increase in footprint reliability and accelerated cave growth. The paper summarizes the key learnings at the DMLZ regarding stress and seismic management as well as the positive improvements towards sustained and safe caving operations in the DMLZ.
