North America had an Important role in the early development of sampling theories. Unfortunately many progressive ideas were soon frozen into a series of guidelines based on the philosophy that "honest sampling only requires good judgment and practical experience". Such a philosophy appeared to be good enough In the early age of the mining Industry; however, it became quickly necessary to find new approaches. During the last thirty years, Pierre Gy's sampling theory provided tremendous breakthrough in the comprehension of this new science, nevertheless went unnoticed in North America. Sampling always generates complex problems and as the philosopher and mathematician Descartes suggested: "A complex problem can often be dissociated Into a series of several simpler problems, only then you try to solve those one by one". The only way to solve sampling problems is to consider each component of the overall sampling error: components of a continuous model such as long-range quality fluctuations, periodic quality fluctuations, weighting fluctuations; components of a discrete model such as materialization errors, delimitations errors, extraction errors, fundamental errors, grouping errors, and segregation errors. PAST AND CURRENT PRACTICES Many sampling methodologies have been developed, improved, and standardized during the first half of this century. Accordingly, sampling equipment has been proposed, selected, and used by standards committees. Today, there is a tremendous variety of sampling methodologies and corresponding tools offered to anyone with limited experience in sampling and it is very easy for a chemist, metallurgist, geologist or miner to spend considerable money in equipment transgressing the most basic rules of sampling correctness. Sampling stations that never worked properly in modern plants often cause engineers to abandon them and return to a primitive form of grab sampling.

This research was undertaken to establish the lncendivity of aluminum alloys against rusty steel under frictional impact conditions at typical coal mine fan speeds, to determine any differences in incendivity among various aluminum alloys, and to Investigate less incendive materials as substitutes for aluminum alloys. With a specially designed apparatus, three aluminum casting alloys and three constructional steels were tested for incendivity in frictional impact against rusted steel in flammable methane-air mixtures. Although varying in degree, all aluminum alloys investigated exhibited a high ignition probability under the test conditions; none of the steel specimens tested caused any ignitions under the same conditions.

On July 30, 1979 New Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) regulations for implementing the procedural provisions of the decade-old National Environmental Policy Act went into effect. These new regulations replace approximately seventy different sets of agency regulations, providing some uniformity throughout the Federal government in the conduct of environmental reviews and preparation of environmental impact statements (EIS). This attempt by the Federal government at a general improvement in the preparation and quality of EIS's presents an opportunity for the mining industry to evaluate how the EIS process for mining proposals can be expedited. The environmental impact statement is often a key element on the critical path of a major mining project. Preparation of the EIS is ordinarily the responsibility of the Federal agency with primary decision-making authority over the project. Still, the proponent, i.e. the mining company, can play a major role in the process and have a major impact on the timeliness and adequacy of the effort. Typically, the Proponent will conduct (or will hire consultants to conduct) environmental baseline studies of, for example, air quality, wildlife, geology, water quality, vegetation and archaeology. These studies are then compiled into an environmental report and submitted to the agency. The agency verifies the data and incorporates them into the environmental impact statement.

The goal of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) coal preparation R&D program is to develop technology to reduce the ash and sulfur contents of United States coals to levels such that the resultant product can be formulated into a high- quality solid or slurry fuel that could replace oil or natural gas in both new and retrofit applications. The Coal Preparation program is implemented by the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (PETC) and is conducted both in-house and by a cross section of industrial organizations, universities, and national laboratories.

Although these exhibit similar structures overall, there are more acute valuation problems in alluvials. Most of this description will therefore be about alluvials with comments on bedded vis-a- vis alluvial deposits where necessary. Although geological comments refer mainly to lateritic deposits the method of valuation described applies to all bedded deposits, e. g. coal, limestone, phosphate. In general, the more a deposit suffers alteration during or after its formation and the more the sampling process disturbs its material, the greater the difficulties of valuation. Emphasis is laid on structure, as in any kind of deposit valuation cannot proceed until its structures are understood. Not all the structures found in alluvials will occur in bedded deposits, of course.

The McDonald deposit is a volcanic-hosted epithermal gold resource that is estimated to contain 251,000 kg of gold in 375 Mt of ore at an average grade of 0.7 g/t gold. Phelps Dodge exploration geologists, working for the Seven-Up Pete Joint Venture, discovered the deposit in 1989. By the end of 1992, 494 drill holes for over 113,000 m of drilling, bulk sampling, soil geochemistry, geophysics, metallurgical testing, engineering, and environmental studies had been completed to support feasibility studies. The discovery of McDonald required vision, persistence, and commitment of everyone from the geologist on the drill rig to the senior management of the company.

If components of a gas-liquid stream react with each other and with stationary solids, involving parallel and sequential, reversible and irreversible, and slow and instantaneous reactions, the process can be defined by a set of simultaneous differential rate equations and simulated as multistage semibatch re¬actors. Each stage is divided into finite time increments. Within each increment, even the simultaneous reactions are treated as sequential. The proposed method follows process evolution from non-steady state startup to normal operating conditions. It allows computing byproduct buildup in recycles, tracer response curves and, in case of underground processes, expansion to adjacent parts of the deposit.

But I intend to venture in a field that is new to me, yet old to all of us, the field of Economics.

I chose the title "Let's Clear the Air" for this afternoon's presentation because it has two meanings, the literal and the figurative. Most of you know what MSHA is. Most of you know what MSHA does. And, for the most part, most of you know why. What I hope to accomplish today is to "clear the air" around our health standards, to clarify for you how MSHA views its congressional mandate under Title I Section 101(a)(6), (7), and (9) of the Mine Safety and Health Act. Asbestos, silica, radiation, noise, welding fumes, carbon monoxide, lead, hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen dioxide - the list of physical and chemical hazards encountered in the metal and nonmetal mining industry is as diversified as the industry itself, possibly even more so. In addition, miners are often exposed to several of these health hazards simultaneously.

The leaching and solution treatment operations used in the ammoniacal treatment of laterites depend on the ability to establish and maintain close stability relations between soluble metal ammine complexes and solid phases such as oxides, hydroxides, basic carbonates, sulfides and ammonium double salts. This paper presents a quantitative treatment of heterogeneous equilibria in ammonia/laterite hydrometallurgical systems, by means of several.types of hydrometallurgical phasedia- grams (e.g., Eh-pH, log [NH3 + NH4+] - pH, log [C02] - pH, log SO42-] - pH, log [Metal] - pH). Dissolution/precipitation phenomena associated with nickel and cobalt recovery and with magnesium scaling are discussed in the context of the phase diagrams.

Located in Central Nevada, The Round Mountain Gold deposit has been continuously mined since 1977. Present proven and probable reserves are 226 Mt (250 million short tons) at 1.1 g/t (.032 oz per short ton). The current open pit mining rate of 118 Kt (130,000 short tons) per day is producing 41 Kt (45,000 short tons) per day of ore to be processed by heap leach methods. At this rate, the current reserves provide a 16 year mine life. The high mining rate and strict ore delivery requirements mandate comprehensive and realistic mine planning. The mine planning process is described in three general steps: Deposit Modeling; Mine Design; and, Production Coordination and Support.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a ventilation assessment for a recently established underground room-and-pillar stone mine implementing split-mine ventilation. The primary objective was to examine the impact of the length of the in-place stone stoppings on face ventilation efficiency. These stone stoppings serve to separate the intake and exhaust entries and align with the mining direction. To achieve this, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling was utilized. The appropriate turbulence model was selected, and a mesh convergence analysis was conducted for the CFD model. Following that, the CFD model was validated using the conducted ventilation surveys. Two configurations of in-place stone stoppings, designated as Layout-I and Layout-II, were simulated using the validated CFD models. Layout-I featured a shorter in-place stone stopping, while Layout-II had a longer one. The results obtained from the CFD models demonstrated that the increased length of the in-place stone stopping in Layout-II resulted in a notable enhancement in ventilation efficiency at the advanced faces (last stopping), elevating it from 4% in Layout-I to 8.4% in Layout-II. However, no significant impact of the in-place stopping layouts was observed at other faces. In general, Layout-II exhibited a greater circulation of air at the outby stoppings.

Clays for building bricks and roofing tiles in Chile are classified as common clays and ball clays, with deposits of sedimentary and residual origin, both Cenozoic in age. Deposits are known from north to south, through 11 of the 13 Chilean Administrative Regions, 18° to 39° South latitude, and from west to east, through three of Chile's main geomorphic features, namely the Coastal Plains, Coastal Range, and Intermediate Depression. Alluvial and lacustrine sedimentary common clay deposits are located in the northern and southern Intermediate Depression. The average chemical composition of clay deposits in I and I1 Regions, is 58 percent Si02, 16 percent A1203, and 4 percent Fe203 by weight; the primary minerals are sericite, quartz, feldspar, and albite. The average chemical composition of clays in Metropolitan, VI, and VIII Regions, is 52 percent Si02, 16 percent A1203, and 6 percent Fe203 by weight; the primary minerals are montmorillonite, quartz, and plagioclase. Residual common clay deposits occur in the Intermediate Depression and in the Coastal Range internal basins, VII, VLII, and IX Regions, and they represent surficial alteration of pumice beds and crystalline rocks. The average chemical composition of clay deposits derived from crystalline rocks is 58 percent SO2, 17 percent A1203, and 9 percent Fe203 by weight; the primary minerals are sericite, quartz, and clinochlore. Clay deposits formed from pumice beds contain 47 percent Si02, 24 percent A1203, and 10 percent Fe203 by weight; the primary minerals are kaolinite, feldspar, and cristobalite. Sedimentary ball clay deposits are located in the Coastal Plains and Coastal Range, VI, VII, VIII, and IX Regions, between 34" and 39" South latitude. The average chemical composition of the ball clay deposits is 51 percent ,902, 28 percent A1203, 5 percent Fe203 by weight; the primary minerals are kaolinite, quartz, and sericite (illite?). These clay deposits supply the Chilean building sector with over one million metric tons (mt) (1.1 million short tons [st]) of material per year. The average growth rate of clay consumption during the period 1993 through 1997 was 10 percent annually. The clays are used by both mechanized plants and handcraft facilities.

The importance of planning ventilation systems in modern coal mines cannot be overemphasized. Interconnected entries, airflows around and through mined-out areas, leakages through stoppings and other control devices, and the use of multiple fans all contribute to the complexity of ventilation network analysis. Fortunately, the availability of computer programs (e. g., Didyk et al., 1978; McPherson, 1966; Wang and Saperstein, 1970) has greatly reduced the difficulty in net- work analysis. However, to obtain a suitable solution to the practical problem, a ventilation engineer has to simulate various conditions based on the proposed ventilation layouts and the capacities of available fans. It is often a trial-and-error process, although engineering knowledge and judgement are required.

"The history of Duluth commences with Daniel de Greysolon du Lhut, one of the explorers of the Upper Mississippi who came to the head of the lakes in the summer of 1679. Radisson and Groseillier, and Claude Allouez, a Jesuit priest, are supposed to have visited the head of the lakes, -but there is no authentic record previous to that of du Lhut.In 1792, the fur traders established a fort at Fond du Lac, fifteen miles up the St. Louis River from Lake Superior, but within the limits of the present city •of Duluth. In the early 50's, there were a few scattering settlers at Oneota and around the George Stuntz trading post on Minnesota point. In 1855-6, the settlement on Minnesota point was called Duluth, commemorating the name du Lhut, and organized as a town in 1857. The first board of trustees and town council consisted of -William Nettleton, J. B. Culver; Robert E. Jefferson, Grin W. Rice and William Old: In 1870, the city of Duluth was incorporated, and five years later a portion of the same territory was incorporated as the village of Duluth, and the two municipal corporations were still in existence on March 1, 1887, when the city and the village of Duluth were incorporated as the present city.The first saw mill in Duluth was erected in 1856-57, on the present site of the ship canal. It cut logs from a virgin forest at the upper end of Minnesota point.The first railroad was built to the head of the lakes in 1870. The charter for this road had been granted in 1861 to the Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad Company, afterward called the St. Paul and Duluth, and which is now a part of the Northern Pacific Railroad."

A hydrogeologic investigation was conducted to predict inflow to underground mine workings and mining-induced hydrologic impacts for a proposed underground mine beneath a lake in northern Canada. Flow and shut-in tests were conducted to determine hydraulic conductivity values and to estimate the hydraulic head. A conceptual hydrogeologic model was developed and incorporated into a numerical ground-water flow model (utilizing MINEDW, a three-dimensional, finite-element code with special attributes designed for mine dewatering). The mining sequence was represented in detail(e.g., driving ramps and drifts, extracting panels, and backfilling mined areas). Due to limited field data, a quantitative assessment of uncertainty was implemented to estimate limits of possible inflows.

A study was conducted to determine the feasibility of using dense-medium centrifugation for separating fine (-150 µm) coal. A centrifuge provides the capability of varying the rotational speed and retention time independently, which offers the potential for a higher degree of control as compared to a dense-medium cyclone. Tests were conducted with a 140-mm diameter by 76-mm long Plexiglas separator, which was fitted with appropriate feed and discharge pipes to allow continuous separations to be made. A suspension of ultrafine (-10 µm) magnetite and water was used as the dense medium. The effects of operating conditions, including the magnitude of the 'g"-force and retention time, on centrifuge performance were investigated.

Why did it fail? My first reaction when assigned this topic was to say: because somebody "goofed"--then thank you all for letting me say those few words, then promptly sit down. All of you have been bandying this problem around for many years--so all of a sudden I should come up with the solution. Well, While I might not provide you with your particular answer, I think I can show you some of the resolutions to it. Somewhere along your path of experience you may have discovered that a good formula for starting a fight is to tell a group of dedicated (Nordberg Crusher) users they should be using (Allis-Chalmers), or a group of (Allis-Chalmers) 'users they should be a (Traylor). Now, if you really want a melee, get both groups together and tell them they should be using a (Stedman Cage Mill). This is one sure way you can learn how great minds arrive at logical, well thought-out conclusions, based on all the relevant facts. Why did it fail? I could go on for hours giving you specific reasons why. One of my engineering professors used to start his new class off each year by writing on the blackboard--four and two, then turn to the class and ask: What is the problem? One brave scholar would venture to answer 8. His head would shake no. Another would dare 6. Again, a head shake. Now that the ball had gotten rolling, a number would vocally decide it had to be two, which produced only another shake of the head--no. All of them had missed the question he had asked : What is the problem? What he had gotten ,were some of the possible answers to the problem.

Introduction In the design and specification of a ventilation system for an underground mine, it is necessary to make reasonably accurate estimates of the pressure losses in the various airways of the mine. These estimates can be made with little difficulty for open airways with simple geometric cross-sections, such as those cut by continuous miners or tunnel-boring machines. The situation is much different on a longwall face, where the airway's complex geometric cross section and the presence in the airway of obstructing equipment having a variety of shapes make it difficult, if not impossible, to estimate pressure loss using traditional methods of calculation. Head losses in mine entries are calculated using Atkinson's Equation. [22H= KPLQ (English) H= KP 3Q (SO (1) 5.2AA] where H = pressure loss, in. of H2O (Pa); K = friction factor, lbf•min2/ft4 (kg/m3); P = perimeter, ft (m); L = airway length, ft (m); Q = airflow quantity, ft3/min (m3/sec); and A = flow cross-sectional area, ft2 (m2) In this equation, the friction factor, K, is an empirical constant that describes the aerodynamic roughness of the airway. Typically, the K-factor for a given airway is determined by measuring the factors H, P, L, Q and A in Equation (1) and calculating K. Tables of friction factors calculated in this way are found in textbooks and handbooks that deal with mine ventilation analysis. Unfortunately, very few K-factors have been measured on longwall faces, and the accuracies of those that have been measured are entirely site specific, because of the wide variety of equipment found on longwalls. The development of a technique for prediction without mine-site measurements of the friction factor for any longwall face, regardless of its configuration, will thus be very useful in the design of ventilation systems for mines in which longwall mining is practiced. Calculation of pressure losses using Atkinson's Equation (1) and empirically determined K-factors provides accurate and useful approximations in cases where the airways have relatively simple cross sections. However, a careful analysis using the principles of fluid mechanics shows that such calculations are based on two assumptions that are not strictly correct when there are obstructions in the airway. The first assumption is that the air velocity distribution in the cross section, particularly around the perimeter, is uniform. This assumption results from the fact that the tabulated K-factor values found in the literature are based on field measurements with uniform conditions. Such uniformity does not exist in longwall airflows. The second common assumption is that the K-factor, and corresponding head loss, is independent of the Reynolds Number (NR) for a given flow. In fact, this assumption is not strictly correct, and is particularly erroneous in the case of irregular protuberances into the airflow, such as those found on a longwall face. The errors arising from the assumptions may be avoided by using K-factors calculated by a newly devised method, described below, which takes into account the fundamental principles of aerodynamic drag analysis. This new technique has two advantages: first, it is flexible enough to model any longwall, regardless of equipment configuration; second, it employs terminology and equations familiar to those who perform mine ventilation analysis, using K-factors, for which ventilation engineers have an intuitive understanding, rather than drag coefficients. To provide guidance for development of a longwall drag model, data were taken on two modern longwalls operating in substantially different conditions. Pressure measurements at Mine B were made with 200-foot (61-m) sections of 1/8-in. (3-mm) diameter plastic tubing, attached to a Dwyer Magnehelic gauge. Pressure drops were measured in 200-foot increments down the face, and summed to give the drop for the entire face length. This technique was found to produce small, repeated errors because of the number of segments required to span the longwall. At Mine A this problem was avoided by using a single, continuous, plastic tube for the entire face length. The psychrometric properties of the air were measured for both Mines A and B. A calibrated, standard vane-anemometer was used to measure the airflow on both faces. Finally, numerous dimensions were measured on both faces, and face profile drawings were obtained to allow detailed evaluation of the face equipment geometry. From this information, accurate evaluations of the average wetted perimeter and average area of the longwall face airways were made. While systems to remove sulfur oxides from flue gases have been used at coal fired power plants since 1931, critical need for flue gas desulfurization has only occurred since the late 1960s following the passage of the Clean Air Act Amendments. Commercial and advanced flue gas desulfurization processes (FGD) are reviewed. Advantages and disadvantages of the processes are discussed. Regulatory requirements leading to the development of FGD systems are identified. The location and operation of coal fired plants may be determined more and more by the regulatory requirements for sludge disposal, waste, water discharge and air emissions.
