The most significant trend in flotation has been the ever-increasing scale of operations. There is, however, doubt that this ongoing trend is enough to maintain the economics against trends such as falling grades, increasing mining costs, pressure on water supply and demand, rising energy demands needed for mineral processing, and a focus on whole of life value and mine legacy issues. We comment on the ramifications of broader uptake of more sustainable mining for mineral processing methods and address the specific question of whether recent progress in in-place recovery will lead to a timely breakthrough. The answer proposed is that this is possible in the next 10 to 20 years, but in the meantime the focus is just as likely to be on removal of waste (beneficiation) much earlier in circuits. Either way, mineral processing and flotation as we know it will change significantly.

Innovative solution management is being used at Coeur-Rochester, Inc. to increase bullion production and decrease overall costs. New operating programs call for reduced solution application rates to the heap to increase pregnant stream values at a lower and less costly plant flowrate because silver and gold extractions are equal regardless of leach solution application rate. Solar heating is used in the summer months to increase the core temperature of the heap for use in the winter months thus increasing silver extraction rate. This paper outlines the programs now in effect and the savings incurred because of them.

Introduction The feeding to zero concept involves feeding 600 µm x 0 (28 mesh x 0) size raw coal to heavy media (magnetite) cyclones along with the +600 µm (+28 mesh) size coal. Traditional circuits employ desliming or removing the 600 µm x 0 (28 mesh x 0) size fraction and feeding the cyclones +600 µm (+28 mesh) size coal. The feeding to zero concept recirculates 600 µm x 0 (28 mesh x 0) fines in the circuit. At the same time, a portion of the fine material is continuously withdrawn and recovered. This, in turn, prevents a fines buildup. This concept eliminates desliming screens and secondary fines circuitry for recovery of 600 x 150 µm (28 mesh x 100 mesh) coal. The result is a very simple circuit. Feeding to zero at Island Creek Island Creek Corp. was the first involved with the new concept in 1976. The company needed a temporary plant for the 9.5 mm x 0 (0.4 in. x 0) raw coal at its Pond Fork mine, near Madison, WV, while a full-scale plant was being designed and built. At that time, the Childress Corp., of Beckley, WV, became interested in the feeding to zero concept. Island Creek awarded a contract to Childress to build a single cyclone modular plant, incorporating this feeding to zero concept. The plant was erected in three months. The Pond Fork modular plant proved successful in attaining the desired feed rate of about 63.5 t/h (70 stph), while maintaining good separating efficiencies and low magnetite consumption rates. The 9.5 mm x 150 µm (0.4 in. x 100 mesh) clean coal was recovered and the 150 µm x 0 (100 mesh x 0) size was disposed of to waste. The full-scale plant was completed about two years later and the Pond Fork modular plant was moved to Holden, WV. There, it was incorporated into the Holden 29 preparation plant as a separate circuit for cleaning -25 mm (-1 in.) coal. In 1976, a similar plant was installed in Virginia by another company. These two plants are believed to be the first two operational plants in the United States incorporating the feeding to zero concept. Island Creek subsequently contracted with Childress for an identical plant at the Coal Mountain operation in West Virginia. The plant operated for three years before the mine was closed. The unit was then moved to the Spurlock mine near Martin, KY where it continues to operate. The successful operation of the Pond Fork and Coal Mountain plants before and after relocation proved both the performance and moveability of this type of circuit when constructed in a modular fashion. Since the first two plants were built, Island Creek has incorporated the feeding to zero circuit in nine additional plants. A grand total of 33 cyclones have been installed using this concept. One is the Providence mine, near Providence. Providence preparation plant Island Creek contracted with J.O. Lively Corp. of Glen White, WV in July 1978 for the construction of the Providence preparation plant. The plant began operation in February 1979. The construction period was about halved by building the plant with modular design concepts. Prefabricated sections, floors, and sides were brought in as units and then bolted in place. The Providence plant has a good track record of processing coal at a feed rate of 454 kt/h (500 stph). Feed coal to the plant has an average ash content of about 18% and sulfur content of about 4.5%. It contains about 22% refuse. The coal product has an average ash content of about 8% and sulfur content is about 3%. Raw West Kentucky No. 9 seam coal is conveyed from a box cut in the Providence mine to a rotary breaker. The breaker is fitted with 74 mm-diam (3 in.-diam) opening breaker plates. Introduction It is now believed that, even with the environmental protection measures now being taken, the further application of traditional coal-mining and electric power-generation technologies will inevitably cause further irreversible damage to the global ecosystem. Further improvements in conventional coal-mining technologies, both surface and underground, are expected to have only limited impacts on the economical, ecological and social aspects of coal mining. In countries with a developed coal industry, coal reserves with favorable conditions at shallow depths are rapidly being depleted. Therefore, in the future, more coal will be mined from deeper levels, resulting in higher operational costs and lower labor productivity. The solution to this problem is to be found in developing, promoting and implementing unconventional coal-mining and advanced clean-coal technologies. This paper presents an unconventional concept that has been suggested by the authors. The basic goal is to achieve coal-methane energy resource conservation and to remove barriers to energy efficiency through the adoption of integrated, ecologically clean, innovative technology. The following principles form the foundation of this concept: Energy resource conservation: This principle concerns the exploitation of actual and potential coal-methane reserves in the most effective way with the lowest possible losses and with the application of the most energy-efficient electric power-generation technology. Energy conversion: Energy conversion means the conversion of solid coal to synthetic fuel gas (in situ or in-cycle), the conversion of methane bounded within the coal matrix to free-flowing drained meth¬ane, the conversion of solid coal in situ to a coal/water mixture (slurry), and the conversion of these gas fuels into electric power. Technological and managerial integration: This prin¬ciple means an integration of coal-gas methane min¬ing operations and electric power generation into one commercial mine-to-product enterprise with electric power as the final product. Thus, coalbed methane drainage and coal gasification (both in situ and in-cycle) integrated with a combined cycle of electric power generation constitutes a highly integrated coal-gas methane energy-generation system. The system can be materialized in the form of a local integrated coal-gas electric power complex (LICGEPC). General features of the new concept The coal-gas-methane electricity concept is actually a synthesis of the following four technological components: Coalbed methane drainage. This technique and its utilization attained recognition after commercial operations were proven successful in the San Juan and Black Worriers coalfields in the United States. Worldwide, extensive field experiments and research-and-development activities are being carried out in the area of coalbed methane exploitation and utilization. Recently, coalbed methane drainage for power generation has been undergoing intensive research and development. At the Harworth Colliery in the United Kingdom, a combinedcycle power plant has been built that uses coalbed methane. The plant has an installed capacity of 15 MW Also, Germany, Australia, the CIS and China have conducted various experiments and industrial tests on the use of coalbed methane power generation. Underground coal gasification. Another unconventional technological approach is underground coal gasification (UCG). A number of semi-commercial, demonstration and pilot projects have been undertaken in Russia, the Ukraine, Uzbekistan, the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy and Belgium to demonstrate the technical and economical viability of coal gasification in situ. In Uzbekistan, the Angren coal-gasification station has been in full-scale commercial operation for two decades. The operation supplies a power plant with synthetic coal gas. "To ensure that trains run safely, the performance of railway civil engineering structures is checked by periodic inspections. General inspection method has merits and demerits, but none of them offers the combination of high accuracy and quick inspection. In an effort to resolve this problem, West Japan Railway Company, the Institute for Laser Technology and the Railway Technical Research Institute jointly developed a remote laser sensing system as an alternative to the impact acoustics method for detecting defective concrete elements in tunnel linings. The proposed remote laser sensing system has two lasers, one to apply an impact to the concrete surface and the other to measure the vibration of the concrete generated by the impact laser. The impact laser is a high-energy pulse laser that induces vibration in the concrete. The detection laser has a signal beam and a reference beam. The signal beam reflects on the concrete surface and goes into the dynamic hologram crystal. The reference beam diffracts in the dynamic hologram and enters the detection sensor with the signal beam. The vibration of the concrete surface can be measured to detect the movement of an interference pattern. A prototype of the remote laser sensing system was developed as shown in Figure1. A vibration and acoustic insulators are equipped to remove a noise generated from a maintenance car or electric generator in this system. The proposed laser remote sensing system and the detection algorithm were verified with the help of field test conducted in a tunnel on the Shinkansen. An impact test using hammering was applied to obtain the accurate response acceleration on the surface of the concrete before application of the proposed method. In this test, the result obtained from the proposed method has good agreement with that obtained from the impact test by hammering. Consequently, it is verified that the proposed method can be used as an alternative to the standard impact acoustics method."

"This paper presents the results of a comprehensive study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) to evaluate the effects of longwall-induced subsurface deformations and permeability changes on shale gas well integrity and safety under shallow cover. NIOSH researchers selected a study site over a southwestern Pennsylvania coal mine, which extracts 1,500-ft-wide longwall faces under 482 feet of cover. One in-place inclinometer well and three permeability monitoring wells were drilled and installed over a 125-ft by 275-ft centers abutment pillar. In addition to the inclinometer well and monitoring wells, surface subsidence measurements and underground coal pillar pressure measurements were conducted as the first 1,500-ft-wide longwall panel on the south side of the abutment pillar mined by the site.A number of FLAC3D finite difference simulations (Itasca Consulting, 2017) were conducted to estimate surface subsidence, coal pillar pressure increases, and horizontal displacements in the in-place inclinometer (IPI) monitoring well. Comparisons of the FLAC3D finite difference simulation results and the surface, subsurface, and underground instrumentation results show that the measured IPI casing deformations are in reasonable agreement with those predicted by the FLAC3D models, and that the measured surface subsidence and underground pillar pressure are in excellent agreement with those predicted by the 3D models. Measured permeability changes were incorporated into a preliminary calculation to evaluate the effect of a hypothetical shale gas well leak on longwall ventilation. Results from this 2018 research clearly indicate that under shallow cover, the measured horizontal displacements within the abutment pillar are at least one order of magnitude higher than those measured in a 2017 study under deep cover and slightly higher than those measured in a 2014 study under medium cover. This research represents a very important step and initiative in utilizing the knowledge and science obtained from mining research to improve miner and public safety as well as the safety and health of the workers in the oil and gas industries"

The Don River & Central Waterfront Coxwell Sanitary Bypass Tunnel Project in Toronto extends approximately 10.5 km from Ashbridges Bay Treatment Plant west under Lake Shore Boulevard, north under Bayview Avenue and east through the Don River park area to the Coxwell Ravine Park. This project includes the installation of five intake shafts connected by 10.5 km of 6.3 m internal diameter tunnel and eleven drop shafts and vent shafts, connected to the tunnel by a series of adits. During the excavation of one of five intake shafts (20 m in diameter and 52 m deep), significant volumes of free phase oil and hydrocarbons were encountered. Due to the heavy inflows of the contaminants, excavation was stopped at the transition depth. The initial support of excavation needed to be redesigned, shaft had to be backfilled with CDF and installation of deeper secant piles are in progress to cut off contaminants. This paper outlines the initial plan for excavation as well as the design changes to the plan. The current status of the shaft excavation and lessons learned will be discussed.

Due to pricing volatility and lack of availability of metals, the use of non-metallic materials of construction in metal extraction and refining processes has increased significantly in recent years Even though costs and availability of metals has improved recently, these factors are not expected to continue into the future as metal supplies once again fall short of global demand. One of the most common non-metallic materials of construction used in metal extraction and refining processes today is Fiberglass- Reinforced Plastic (FRP). These processes often require materials of construction that can resist acids and high concentrations of acid chloride salts. As shown in Table 1, FRP based on epoxy vinyl ester resin has the same chemical resistance to acid and better resistance to acid chloride salts than alloy C-276 and is superior to 2205 stainless steel in both cases.

The LaModel program is widely used to calculate stresses and displacements on thin tabular deposits, particularly when multiple seams or complex mining geometry is encountered. The program itself allows the user to create multiple mining steps to show a progressive sequence of mining. However, LaModel considers each individual step as an independent steady-state condition, and any previous loading conditions of the materials are not tracked. It also does not consider any sort of dynamic stress change during the mining process. In certain circumstances, especially in multiple-seam situations, modeling a scenario of the seam of interest without considering the previous mining sequence in the off seams can potentially lead to inaccurate results. The primary objective of this paper is to present a situation where a potentially dynamic, unstable mining condition was encountered. It was not evident until the previous loading conditions in the off seams and the impact of dynamic stress changes in the active seam were considered. It is important to make the mining community aware of these potential modeling scenarios where the path-dependent nature of the mining sequence is of key importance. This paper presents a case history where room-and-pillar retreat mining was being conducted in a relatively deep cover stress regime where multiple seam interactions were present from both undermining and overmining. Mining in the active seam was being conducted with roomand- pillar mining techniques consisting of a series of parallel production panels being successively developed and retreat mined along a set of Mains. In this situation, the traditional global LaModel analysis without any path-dependent adjustments did not fully identify the area of poor conditions that were encountered. This paper explores the impacts of mining in the active seam on the lower seam which, in turn, has a negative impact on the active seam. This provided a solid foundation for the subsequent analysis of the three seams simultaneously. Based on the calibrated model, it is likely that retreat mining in the active seam resulted in increased stresses in the underlying seam that conceivably resulted in additional convergence and, most likely, additionally convergence of the pillars under the panel being developed. This in turn could have caused active subsid- The LaModel program is extremely useful for analyzing multiple-seam mining scenarios. As multiple-seam situations become even more prevalent, the potential for encountering a path-dependent mining scenario also increases. To successfully model path-dependent mining scenarios, the ground control engineer will be required to make sound judgments on the condition of pillars in sub-adjacent seams. These engineering judgments should be based not only on the current state of stress, but also on any prior or future states of stress. This means considering the stresses from over or undermining as well as stresses applied to the sub-adjacent seams from actively mining the seam of interest.

The Two Rivers Water Reclamation Authority (TRWRA) in Monmouth County, New Jersey, is replacing its aging Pleasure Bay Interceptor (PBI) with a new 54-in interceptor in a 3,250-foot long 8 to 10-foot diameter tunnel and a new 50-mgd main pump station (MPS). A comprehensive phased geotechnical investigation was performed, including SPTs, CPTs and geophysics. A channel filled with soft marine sediments was identified. The tunnel is set in stiff to hard marine soil to enable using a less expensive open-face TBM. The thickness of tunnel cover under the channel is optimized through numerical analyses to avoid a deeper pump station yet maintaining tunnel stability with controlling seepage.

In busy and historic cities, traditional open box metro stations are becoming outrageously difficult, unacceptable for the citizen and uneconomical. Hybrid stations provide an interesting alternative. In-house experience of Gautrain (South Africa), West bay (Qatar), Cairo line 3A (Egypt), and Melbourne (Australia) all aim to reduce disturbance to the city and its inhabitants during construction. Constructed in rock or in deep soil under water table, they take advantages of the latest construction techniques from cement grouting to freezing, and from traditional excavation of cavern to large tunnels constructed by sophisticated tunnel boring machines (TBM). Today, they form the ultimate construction challenge.

The effectiveness of selective flocculation and dispersion processes for the concentration of hematite ore are strongly dependent on the ionic content of the process water. It has been noticed that magnesium ions are more detrimental to iron recoveries during gravity separation and flotation processes than calcium. This phenomenon was studied by measuring the zeta potential of hematite ore at various concentrations of sodium, magnesium, calcium, strontium and barium at a pH of 11. Results show that zeta potential inverts from negative to positive at concentrations as low as 0.16 mM of magnesium ions in the solution. It takes a significantly higher concentration (1.25 mM) of calcium ions to achieve the same effect. This difference is attributed to the ability of magnesium ions to adsorb to all surface hydroxyl groups, whereas calcium, due to its larger size, can only adsorb to every third hydroxyl group. This hypothesis was confirmed by results similar to those seen with calcium when this test was repeated with strontium and barium ions. The tendency for calcium ions to adsorb to every third surface hydroxyl group causes higher concentrations of calcium to be less detrimental to hematite concentration processes than magnesium.

As part of the 3RPORT Project, a 5-mile tunnel is being excavated underneath the three rivers of Fort Wayne using a 19-foot diameter Slurry Tunnel Boring Machine. The groundwater pressure at the tunnel axis ranges from 4.5 to 5.3 bar. The rock mass hydraulic conductivity is very high with water inflows up to 10,000gpm imposing significant challenges to the project. After excavating 1,550-feet of the TBM tunnel, major leaks between the tailskin and the segmental lining were observed, indicating the potential deterioration of the tailskin brushes and the need for inspection and eventual replacement. The first part of the paper describes the planning of the intervention, including the design of the polyurethane grouting campaign, the procedures developed for the execution and the controls established during construction to timely assess the presence of potential hazards. The second part of the paper focuses on the experience gained during execution and lesson learned to prevent future occurrences of this nature.

Arizona is a sun-belt growth-region where 13 tons of industrial (nonmetallic) minerals is being produced annually per capita. In 19B5, non-fuel mineral production reached $1.532 billion and consisted of metallic ($1.277 billion-84%) and nonmetallic ($253.5 million-16%) earth materials. Sand-and-gravel value was second only to copper. over 90% of the value of nonmetallics is represented by combined sand, gravel, cement, and lime. The remaining less than 10% ($25 million) was attributed mainly to stone, specific volcanic products (cinder, perlite, pumice), gypsum, clays, salt, zeolite, and others. Current interest in industrial-mineral development in Arizona is high, especially in the geologically complex Basin and Range region.

Microseismic passive velocity tomography is becoming an effective technology for large-scale mining-induced stress monitoring in underground mines, especially in the field of early warning of mining-induced hazards. Aiming at the problems of missing low-magnitude events in traditional microseismic monitoring, as well as the potential to increase the resolution of the tomograms in both time and space, a microseismic passive velocity tomography analysis method based on the template matching method was proposed. First, the template matching method was used to pick microseismic events. Then, the probabilistic, non-linear, global-search earthquake location method was used to locate the events and calculate travel time and travel distance. Finally, the fast-marching method was used to carry out passive velocity tomography analysis to image the movement of the abutment stress associated with the longwall. The results show that the selected templates can identify more microseismic events than the traditional microseismic analysis, and the variation trend of events in each day is consistent with the data from the traditional analysis. Using microseismic event locations, travel times and travel distance can effectively complete microseismic passive velocity tomography analysis in each day during the study period and can effectively identify the forward and side abutment stress zones of that longwall panel. This study provides a reference for the identification of mine-induced high stress zones, which has implications for hazard identification and mitigation, with increased resolution of the tomograms in time and space.

One of the major objectives of cost analysis is to enable the manager to predict the financial outcomes of decisions. To accomplish this, the future costs and benefits of alternative courses of action must be determined. If care- fully used, information about past financial performance can be helpful in this analysis despite the fact that, by definition, financial reporting information is historical. In many cases, both revenues and costs need to be estimated for decision- making. For the production manager, additional revenue is a result of increased throughput or recovery of valuable material from the stream of mined material. A reduction in operating cost, although similar to a revenue increase in its financial impact, is estimated using slightly different techniques. Generally, the estimation of cost is more difficult than the estimation of revenue. Most cost estimates have two components: an estimate of fixed costs and an estimate of variable costs. As discussed in chapter 5, the total cost of an activity during a specified period can be expressed as: Total cost = (Variable cost per unit of activity) x (Units of activity) + Fixed cost or TC = VX+F

The choice of TBM type is never easy, but it becomes especially challenging when faced with a hard rock tunnel with expected high water flows and pressure. Slurry Shield tunneling has a long history of being used in these conditions to minimize the risk, though this method has brought with it other risks along with cost considerations. At recent projects around the world, another method has been proven to effectively manage these project risks without utilizing Slurry Shield tunneling: Shielded, NonContinuous Pressurized (NCP)-TBM tunneling in rock with a comprehensive grouting program. In this paper, the authors will analyze the use of Shielded NCP TBMs at projects around the world as compared with slurry shield tunneling in rock under water pressure. Recommendations will be given in order to establish a clear picture of the optimal tunneling method.

"When using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) during tunneling work, unexpected ground conditions can be encountered that are not predicted in the design stage. These reduce the stability of tunnels, and can result in considerable economic losses. This paper analyzes the potential risk events that may occur due to risky ground conditions. A resistivity survey is utilized to predict the risky ground conditions ahead of the tunnel face during construction. The potential risk events are evaluated considering both the occurrence probability and the impact. A TBM risk management system that can suggest proper solution methods for potential risk events is also developed. Multi-Criterion Decision Making (MCDM) is utilized to determine the optimal solution method to handle risk events. Lastly, an actual construction site, at which a risk event occurred during tunnel construction, is analyzed utilizing the Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) Shield TBM, to verify the efficacy of the proposed system.INTRODUCTION The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) method has been widely adopted in numerous tunneling projects because, as a mechanized tunneling method, it is also environmentally friendly, exhibiting minimal noise and vibration when compared with conventional tunneling method. In addition, it provides considerable economic benefits that allow for a high advance rate for long drives during construction. However, the TBM method has a limitation, as it is unable to deal with unexpected situations during construction, as the system is not capable of moving backwards. This leads to delays or even stoppages, and a corresponding increase in construction costs due to the need to arrange for alternative equipment and solutions. It is essential to retain systematic management in order to prevent or deal with unforeseen consequences such as the collapse of a tunnel face, ground surface upheaval or settlement, and construction delay due to water leakage during construction. Therefore, a systematic risk management system that is applicable during the construction stage of the TBM tunnel should be developed, taking into account the predicted risky ground conditions ahead of the tunnel face in advance."
