INTRODUCTION The components of the radiological hazard in uranium mines are: 1. exposure to radon and its short-lived daughters 2. exposure to long-lived ore dust 3. external irradiation With usual ventilation rates, the dosimetry relative to the first component only requires to know each miner&apos;s exposure to a potential energy of short-lived radon daughters, (EXP[a]). Presently in France, (EXP [a]) is determined monthly from radon concentration measurements. This is an indirect method based on ambient monitoring. After technical improvements achieved during the last years it is now possible to measure (EXP [a] directly with an individual portable monitor developed by the CEA. The purpose of this study is to analyze and compare monitoring results obtained by these methods. DETERMINATION OF INDIVIDUAL MONTHLY EXPOSURES TO[ a] POTENTIAL ENERGY OF SHORT-LIVED RADON DAUGHTERS [(EXP a) amb, by ambient monitoring] In this case, it is necessary to know individual monthly exposures to radon, (EXP Rn). As mentioned by Pradel, J.,et al., 1976, (EXP Rn) is estimated for each worker from informations both on radon concentrations (CRn) measured as described by Pradel, J., 1962 and times (t) elapsed in the various workplaces. (EXP Rn) is obtained by summing up the elementary radon exposures CRn x t relative to all the workplaces where the miner was successively engaged during the month. (EXP Rn) values are then corrected by an average equilibrium factor of 0.17 deduced from many measurements and taken as representative for all the French mines. Finally: [ ] (EXP [a])ind are obtained directly with an individual portable instrument described by Chapuis, A.M., et al., 1972. Samples of the air breathed by the miners are pumped continuously and radioactive aerosols containing the short-lived radon daughters are trapped on a filter. The principle of the measurement lies on track-etch detection of the a particles emitted by the deposited material. The technical aspects have been described by Duport, P., et al., 1980a, Mouden, A., et al., 1980 and Chapuis, A.M., 1980. As mentioned by Duport, P., et al., 1980, fiability is good. Indications on measurement reproducibility are given by Pradel, J., et al., 1977. PRESENTATION OF THE STUDY The underground miner population of a French mine was followed during a period of 8 months (October 1978 - May 1979). Monthly exposure values for each miner determined either by ambient or individual monitoring, (EXP [a])amb or (EXP[ a])ind, had been previously collected by Le Gac, J., 1980, who had also defined miner categories according to the characteristics of the work performed. Four groups are considered here, the "whole mine" and three categories as described in table 1. Data on the individual monthly exposures,(EXP [a])ind and (EXP [a])amb, were taken again to analyze the individual cumulative exposures instead of the "month by month" values. The influence of the mean habits of each individual on its surveillance results is thus taken into account. Each miner has a cumulative exposure as an individual of the "whole mine" and as an individual of each category in which he has worked. The results obtained by ambient or individual monitoring were analyzed (characteristics and adjustements of the distributions) and then compared (description of the discrepancies observed). Obviously, such a study is possible only if all the exposures are cumulated on a same duration. As miners have not worked during the same number of months in the course of the data collecting period, one must considerer the individual average monthly exposures, [(EXP a)]amb and[ (EXP a)]ind, instead of the individual cumulative exposures, which is typically the same thing. To be sure that the exposure values of a given group (A, B, C or D) are representative, only those miners really present for at least 3 months in this group were taken into account. Finally, each individual of the "whole mine" and of the various work categories has a pair of average monthly exposure values : [(EXP a)amb] determined by ambient monitoring and[ (EXP a)ind] deduced from the track-etch recording of the individual portable monitor. Until recently, the generation of electricity was regulated in all states, and the value of generation assets in a regulatory environment for ad valorem taxation were based largely on the book value of the plant plus the rate of return on capital allowed by the state regulatory agency. This method of appraising utility generation assets is inappropriate in a competitive environment because past capital expenditures are not relevant in a competitive environment. However, it is not clear what valuation methods are appropriate after restructuring. This paper identifies important problems and advantages of other appraisal methodologies and makes comments on various valuation and taxation methods.

In Canada, most of the rock being broken in underground metal mines is being done by using traditional drilling and blasting methods. Despite advances being made in hardrock boring and other, more exotic techniques, Dynatec believes that the traditional methods will prevail for many years. It is also believed that modest research efforts expended on the traditional methods will result in substantial financial benefits to the mining and rock tunneling businesses. Dynatec has pursued productivity improvements through the use of long rounds in shaft sinking and lateral development. The concept of longer rounds was developed by Dynatec on the Craig Shaft Sinking Project (RETC, 1991). This technology was subsequently used to sink the two shafts at Aur Resources with great success. The development of a Long Round Jumbo for tunneling is a natural progression of the long round technology developed for the Craig Shaft. The Dynatec Long Round System has been patented in the United States and South Africa, with additional patent applications pending in Canada and Australia.

After the presentation of a co-authored paper, "The Cost of Transporting Ores and Raw Materials in World Markets", at the February SME meeting, one questioner commented, "You have been talking about the large shipper and ship loads. What does the small shipper do?" This paper will attempt to answer that question, at least in part. Probably the questioner hoped to hear about specific new tools and new techniques that he could apply. But one paper could only scratch the surface of the vast fund of information available; so rather than talk specifics we should take basics, that is, people, management and technology.

An Overall View of the Japanese Ferroalloys Industry 1) Depressed Demand for Ferroalloys: In Japan consumption of ferroalloys in the last ten years has decreased, although there has been some fluctuation from year to year. During this term production figures of the steel industry, which are closely related to consumption of ferroalloys, are as follows: Shipment of steel products for the domestic market has declined gradually from 69 million tons in 1979, which was the peak year for steel production, to 60.3 million tons in 1982 and 60.4 million tons in 1983, the level of 1978. In addition, exports also have been a downward trend since 1976, which was the peak year with tonnage of 34 million tons, to 28 million tons in 1982 and 31 million tons in 1983.

A comparison of the IMC Anionic Process and the CLDRI Process, based on pilot plant testing of waste pebble by Jacobs Engineering is presented. Estimated costs for constructing and operating a beneficiation plant utilizing dolomite flotation are given. Research to develop practical flotation processes for removing dolomite from low-grade phosphate rock has been a high priority for the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research. The Institute funded the above pilot plant programs in 1998 and 2000. The Florida Phosphate industry currently deals with the increasing dolomite content of ore reserves by practicing selective mining. Heavy media separation plants installed at two mines to remove dolomite from pebble are not being operated. The flotation separation of dolomite from waste pebble requires that the flotation feed be ground. Grinding liberates the mineral species and produces particle sizes small enough to be floated. Only two dolomite flotation processes, the IMC Anionic Process and the CLDRI Process, have been successfully demonstrated on flotation feed that has not been deslimed after grinding. Deslimed flotation feed, relative to undeslimed feed, has improved flotation performance and reduced reagent consumption. However, for the above mention processes, undeslimed ground feed increases the yield of concentrate because the phosphate desliming losses are avoided.

Cost o f mechanical tunneling requires the knowledge of many machine/rock parameters such as rock types, machine power, penetration rate, cutter life, maintenance schedule, etc. Capital investment, labor requirements, and project scheduling will all play an important role in defining the economics of the overall project. Knowledge of the cost sensitivity of different project parameters will improve the overall success of any particular tunneling project if this information is incorporated into an effective management plan. Through the use of an interactive graphic computer program written for a microcomputer, one has the ability to quickly evaluate relative costs for a variety of parameters for either an existing project or for a proposed site.

INTRODUCTION A shuttle car is a self-propelled rubber-tired haul¬age vehicle designed specifically for underground min¬ing, primarily in coal mines (see Figs. 1 and 2). The drive mechanism is located on the sides of the vehicle, and the load is carried in the center. A chain-and-flight conveyor distributes the load when the car is being loaded by a loading machine or continuous miner and also discharges the load onto a conveyor belt or into a mine car. As the name implies, the shuttle car shuttles back and forth between the working face and the un¬loading point and is not required to turn around. Shuttle cars have served as primary haulage in this country since 1940 and still perform this function in most coal mines today. TYPES OF SHUTTLE CARS Shuttle cars may be battery-powered, diesel-powered, or cable-reel electric powered. Battery-powered cars were used between 1940 and 1950, but are almost out of existence today because of their limited power. Diesel cars have been used in coal mines, but are used mostly in noncoal mines where rules and regulations are not as stringent. Also, objections by organized labor have limited the use of diesel-powered shuttle cars in coal mines. Today, the largest number of shuttle cars are cable-reel cars. Electric power is fed through a cable stored on a cable reel that may have a capacity from 152 to 244 m (500 to 800 ft), depending upon the size of the cable and the cable reel (see Table 1). This, of course, limits the travel of a shuttle car. However, time studies have shown that for the most efficient haulage cycle, the length of haulage should not exceed 91 m (300 ft). As haulage distance increases, the waiting time for the loader or miner becomes longer, and haul¬age efficiency suffers. Cable-reel cars are manufactured in standard hand and opposite standard hand models. A standard car has the operator&apos;s control on the left front side and the opposite standard car has the opera¬tor&apos;s controls on the right front. Generally a loader or miner operates with two shuttle cars, one of each type. This allows the trailing cable to lie on either side of the entry and prevents the cables from fouling each other. Shuttle cars are designed to operate with either dc or ac power. Cars using dc power are designed for 250-v supply and ac cars are designed for either 440, 550, or 950 v, three-phase voltage. Most coal mines that are relatively level can use dc cars where dynamic brak¬ing is not required. For mines having steep grades (in excess of 15%) ac cars are used because ac traction motors have inherent dynamic braking and are safer when tramming downgrade. A recent innovation in shuttle car design in the last five years has been the introduction of an ac/dc car. This design utilizes ac input power through the cable, and the power is rectified on the car to 250-v do for traction motors. The pump motor and conveyor motor are powered by ac voltage. The main advantage of this design is efficiency-a much smaller cable may be used and the smooth operating characteristics of the dc traction motor is obtained. This prevents shock loading on the traction drive train, which is an undesirable feature of ac traction motors. SHUTTLE CAR FEATURES Elevating Discharge Today, all shuttle cars are equipped with an elevating front conveyor that allows the shuttle car to discharge into a mine car or belt feeder without the use of ramps. A new sense of urgency permeates the mining industry concerning maintenance. Mining&apos;s continuous process environment demands around-the-clock maintenance support. And profitability conscious mining operations require that production targets be met on time - and economically. These goals require nothing less than an effective maintenance program. In turn, the effectiveness of the maintenance program depends on quality information: easily procured, complete, timely, accurate, and properly used. Information picture is changing Some of the fully integrated, mainframe maintenance information pro¬grams of better days remain. Their upkeep and cost of operation, though, is becoming more difficult to justify. Some operations, faced with production cutbacks a few years ago, downscaled and found they liked it. Now, during an upswing, these operations question the need for the more elaborate, administrative-heavy programs they used to operate. Package programs are not taking their place. Too often, the packages are vague and generic. Some vendors claim that if their offerings work in a hospital complex, they must work in an underground mine. That is not so. Maintenance information in the mining industry is different. The situation has changed There are now smaller, self-contained maintenance groups whose information needs are different. These include an electrical crew in a smelter, an underground mobile equipment shop, or a remote service shop between several distant operating pits. These working environments have changed the character of the information needed as well as the methods for obtaining and using it. Operations-maintenance link In coming back from a downturn, operations people realize that their ability to meet production targets hinges on reliable equipment and avoidance of downtime. They have become familiar with the need to use maintenance services effectively. They also want quality maintenance information. When coupled with the sense of urgency about maintenance, a business-like working environment emerges that has significant new differences in both work control and information. Work control impact Work control has been streamlined to improve communications. Supporting information has been streamlined as well. • Verbal orders are the rule rather than the exception to quickly bring a multi-craft crew to the flotation section or a pit crew to a disabled haulage truck. • Written work requests and work order forms are seldom used, or even needed. Rather, electronic work control logs permit operations to request work, maintenance to acknowledge it, get ready, and do it - quickly, without delay. • Routine servicing is triggered by operating hour accumulation (mobile equipment) or tons of throughput (fixed equipment). Operations is now taking the initiative in delivering mobile equip¬ment to the "bad order line," or switching to a bypass conveyor. Operations wants immediate follow-up reports on equipment condition.

The population growth, urban and industry development cause the increased pollution with different substances, which contain phosphorus. It contributes to the increased demand for its compounds, increasing the use of its natural resources, which is considered to be the most accessible source. The forecasts regarding the world natural reserves of phosphorus deposits are saying that more than 50% of resources used currently will be exhausted within next 60-70 years (Steen, 1998). European Union formulated its goals regarding the waste management in 1990. Its main rules include prevention of waste generation, recycling, reuse of waste as the raw materials in technological processes, separate collection and optimization of final removal. The phosphorus recovery from waste is realized currently in many ways: directly from the waste water stream in sewage-treatment plant, from the sewage sludge, from animal waste, industrial waste and other emissions from industry (Przewrocki et al., 2004). According to the rules of cleaner production the waste should be treated as the source of resources for the production of products with full value (Kowalski, 1998).

"We could blow that damned fort out of existence if we could run a mine shaft under it!," claimed one Union soldier eyeing Bobby Lee&apos;s Petersburg defense line protecting Richmond and Jeff Davis. Puncture the line, take the hill behind, and the Confederate capital would celebrate Yankee jubilee, 1864. That was June. At 4:15 am, July 30, mine boss Henry Reese, sergeant, 48th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, gingerly entered the mine, dark and muddy. Something had gone wrong. The mine, set to go off at 3:30, hadn&apos;t exploded. It had to be checked. The main mine gallery, 1.5 m high x 1.4 m wide (5 x 4 ft) narrowing at the top to 0.6 m (2 ft), forced Reese into a tuck run. Some¬where up there in that 155 m (511 ft) stretch running 6 m (20 ft) under the rebel works, moisture may have doused the charge. Or maybe a fuse splice went awry. Or maybe there was live fire steaming like a locomo¬tive towards 3.6 t (4 st) of black powder. Perhaps now Reese wished this sprint was shorter. For the mine boasted a record break¬ing distance in military annals. Lieut. Col. Henry Pleasants Credit goes to Lieut. Col. Henry Pleas¬ants, commander of the 48th, who overheard the soldier&apos;s claim for what a mine could do. In peacetime, Pleasants had been a railroad engineer working on the Sand Patch Tunnel. He later switched to mining, working for the Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Co. He even married the daughter of the editor of The Miners Journal. Grieving over his wife&apos;s early death, Pleasants plunged into the ven¬ture of war. This Union officer took the mine idea to the brass. Headquarters was less than enthu¬siastic. "The chief engineer of the Army and the rest of the regular Army wiseacres said it was not feasible," Pleasants wrote to his uncle. The pros scoffed, ticking off a list of horribles: No mine has ever gone that far, men will suffocate and be crushed, the rebs will countermine, the men will be trapped. Still, Pleasants eked out a signal to proceed. In the meantime, the miners of the 48th had commenced to dig anyway. It was like the 48th to proceed against the odds. The 48th Pennsylvania Volunteers The 48th had been recruited from Penn¬sylvania&apos;s Schuylkill County, anthracite coal mining country. The mines had been torn with strife over wages. Strikes and rioting were prevalent. Murder was not unknown. This "Buckshot" resistance centered in Pottsville, PA. It forced the governor to call in troops. Coal was in high demand to run the war machine. Pennsylvania operators worried that a military draft would stir up violence, closing the mines altogether and further shift¬ing business to emerging Illinois mines. Men lit out for the western gold fields in the tens of thousands. Secret societies bred in the mining camps invited draft agents to dance at the end of a rope. Jobs threatened by cheap, victorious South¬ern labor were one warning intended to get immigrant miners interested in the war. Operators gave miners time off to help de¬fend Philadelphia during Lee&apos;s thrust to Gettysburg. Even so, the draft spawned new violence and troop intercession. Soldiers were not welcome. The dust had barely settled when into this Pennsylvania "minefield" marched the 48th on a recruitment drive. The 48th had been in Lexington, KY on guard duty. When it came time for the regiment to pull out, the townspeople had prevailed upon authorities to extend the regiment&apos;s stay. Finally ordered to move out, the 48th was feted by a hanky-waving, tear-dropping send-off to the lyrical lament Auld Lang Syne. And Kentucky fancied itself to be rebel. Striding smartly into the Pennsylvania coalfields, the 48th attracted 400 recruits and marched off under regimental colors specially made by the proud citizens of none other than Pottsville, PA.

The optimum flow of materials through a smelter is an extremely important phase of the mining cycle. A typical copper smelter will have up to $US 1,000,000 per day of copper being processed. The motion of the overhead cranes in moving the ladles filled with copper matte and slag from furnace to furnace is prescribed but there can be numerous variables to consider. Some of these variables to the system can be: the speed of the overhead cranes, the number of cranes, the size of the ladles, the size of the furnaces, the number of furnaces and the sequence in loading the furnaces. A simulation model was constructed of a working smelter in the SW of the United States. The model has been used to study the effect of varying parameters of the system. The program runs as follows: an input menu appears on the PC screen and the user can navigate through it and change any of the data; the simulation takes place and the results of the simulation sent to a data file. Animation of the system then is shown on the screen in "cartoon" fashion. The software chosen for the simulation was GPSSI H (&apos;) and PROOF Professional (&apos;) for the animation. The model presented here is believed to be the first reported simulation and animation model for a complete, working smelter.

Existing classifications of mining and construction equipment have had major deficiencies. They often lack organization, balance, and have remained obscure. Particularly when proceeding to great.er resolution these deficiencies have proven crippling. By adopting "Classes", "Groups" f "Types" and "Kinds" at successive degrees of refinement, a "Taxonomy" is developed based on clear visual differentiation or on a "Morphology??. This symbiotic application, adopted from the Biological Sciences, yields clear, simple and unambiguous results. Supporting this effort are guidelines for easily and credibly sketching equipment which are also distinctive. Numerous illustrative examples are provided. Communications are improved and the engineer obtains a confident feel for the equipment at hand.

Oily and particulate befouled waste water discharges are a common industrial problem. Removing these water bourn emulsions from process discharges become increasingly important for both recycled and discharge water streams. Low cost, efficient and easily maintained systems are important. This paper evaluates design factor of such a water cleaning system -a trough filter. This is a continually operating filter that removes oil droplets by wires that wet the oil droplets.

The gold ores in the Jerritt Canyon district have been recognized as refractory since they were first encountered by FMC geologists in 1976. Upon obtaining managing rights as joint venture partner, Freeport McMoRan Inc. developed an operating plan featuring carbon-in-leach gold recovery techniques for the oxide portion of the ores and a patented sulphide oxidation step followed by chlorination for treating the organic carbon constituents of the refractory ores prior to CIL gold recovery. The plant was successfully started up in 1981 with the first gold poured on July 4, 1981. Initial plant throughput was designed to be 2495 MTPD (2750 STPD) total through the dual processing trains.

Outokumpu Tara Mines located near Dublin, Ireland is Europe&apos;s largest producer of lead and zinc concentrates. To reduce dewatering costs and to improve environmental and working conditions, elimination of the lead concentrate thermal dryer was required. This paper describes the development and implementation of the pressure ceramic technology at Tara to replace a conventional vacuum filter/oil-fired dryer system. In 1996 the pressure ceramic filter dewatered 66,600tonnes of lead concentrate, producing a cake at 6 % moisture. Substantial operating cost savings have been realized. Commissioning of a second pressure ceramic filter to handle over 300,000 tonnes/year of zinc concentrates is scheduled for the first quarter of 1997.

The tungsten carbide insert bit has probably advanced blasthole drilling more than any other single improvement. Tungsten carbide inserts have longer life, maintain sharper edges, and penetrate faster than hardened steel edge bits. Before the tungsten carbide hit appeared, all-steel bits were used. Even with the new bits, blasthole drilling costs vary with the type of equipment used and its condition; the hole&apos;s length and diameter; the rock&apos;s texture, hardness, and nature; the operator efficiency. To help reduce drilling costs, the operator should be familiar with the use and care of drill bits. This article provides information about tungsten carbide rock bits used for percussion drilling. Consideration of tungsten carbide rock bits includes looking at bit materials [ ] as well as bit operation and maintenance. Two basic tungsten carbide rock hits are the button bit and the four-wing carbide insert bit. Three common hit-to-drill-steel connections are the bottom drive, tapered drive, and shoulder drive. Bottom drive bits arc typically used for singlepass or longhole drilling, with all percussion drills from handheld sinkers to heavy track drills. Tapered socket bits are available with shallow or deep carhide inserts, for the lowest cost depending on the rock type being drilled. Shoulder drive bits are available in all-steel or carbide insert design.
