M.A. Industries, Inc. has developed and is now offering on a commercially available basis, complete systems to recover and recycle lead from spent SLI batteries. The system begins with the breaking and separation of the component parts of the batteries and subsequent treatment of the effluent water produced by this operation. The recyclable materials recovered from this process are metallic lead, lead paste and polypropylene. The lead paste is introduced into a process to convert it from a lead sulfate to a lead carbonate. The process also regenerates the salt solutions into reusable carbonate. The lead carbonate is then leached into an acid bath where it is later recovered by a proprietary electrolytic process. The metallic lead is recovered in a short rotary furnace producing metal for further refining and alloying. The polypropylene is further washed and then introduced to a reclaim extruder along with the proper modifiers and additives. The resulting resin can then be sold on the open market to injection molding processors. This complete system greatly reduces the amount of waste to be disposed of and completely complies with all applicable EPA guidelines.

INTRODUCTION In ore beneficiation one of the simplest methods of mineral concentration is hand picking to remove either the ore or the waste material from a moving table or conveyor belt. Ore Sorting Equipment may be defined as equipment for mechanized picking. This type of equipment has been used successfully over the past thirty years or so to beneficiate ores of various types in particle mesh sizes between 1mm and 200mm.. at throughputs of up to 150 tonnes per hour. In general for ore sorting to be a consideration the ore and the waste material must be well liberated in the feed to the sorter (that is into practically discrete particles of ore and waste). The larger the liberation size the more likely sorting is to be cost effective. Correct selection of ore sorting equipment is most important and often special machine features are developed for an individual application. Sorter performance can be best determined by extensive testwork of representative ore at design tonnage on prototype or preferably on production model sorting machines. ADVANTAGES OF SORTING ORE The four main advantages of sorting ore are: Reduced milling cost. Reduced processing cost. Higher overall recovery. Reduced transportation costs. Reduced Milling Cost With sorters installed the milling plant following the sorter is generally smaller and hence less costly to install and operate as it only has to handle the sorter product. However this benefit is somewhat offset by the increased cost of the screening and washing plant prior to the sorter and the cost of the sorting plant itself. Reduced Processing Cost As there is less material of higher grade presented to the concentrating plant following the sorter, this plant will generally be smaller and less costly to construct and operate than a plant treating the total quantity of material. Over the past four years, the Coal Research Bureau of West Virginia University has presented a number of papers on operations research in the coal industry before various AIME meetings and meetings of other societies. These papers have been followed up by further presentations in the technical press. The emphasis of all of these papers has been to demonstrate applications of operations research to the solution of numerous types of coal industry problems. In each case, effort has been made to demonstrate that operations research does not require extensive knowledge of computer science or use of sophisticated higher mathematics. In fact, for most applications, satisfactory results can be obtained by a single individual in a minimum of time with no aids other than a pencil and paper and a knowledge of basic arithmetic. The most recent efforts by the Coal Research Bureau have been directed toward the continuing industry problem of optimizing the location of mining facilities. Preliminary work in this area was presented before the Central Appalachian Section of AIME and subsequently published in the May, 1972, issue of Coal Age. This initial presentation illustrated techniques for determining optimum locations of facilities based upon material transport effort under the assumption of constant cost per ton mile of haulage effort. The present paper will expand upon this earlier work and introduce economic factors. In the design of a mine or mining system, careful consideration must be given to the sites selected for each element of the system. Optimum placement of facilities is vital to minimize capital and operating cost. Thus, barring unfavorable geological conditions or other exceptional factors, facilities should be located at those points which represent the minimum cumulative cost over the life of the property. Most cost factors are independent, or essentially independent of the location of fixed facilities. The interaction of Bacillus polymyxa and minerals such as hematite, corundum and quartz resulted in significant surface chemical changes, both on the cell surfaces and on the interacted oxide minerals. After such treatment, quartz was rendered relatively more hydrophobic, while hematite and corundum were rendered more hydrophilic. Biopretreatment was observed to be beneficial in the separation of silica from hematite and alumina by both selective flocculation and flotation. The possible role of bacterial adhesion and metabilites in the biobeneficiation process is illustrated.

A really extensive acid sulfate-altered and mineralized rock in the southeast Red Mountains area is noted for its association with naturally occurring and mine-related acidic and metal-rich waters. Integrated geologic and aqueous geochemical studies demonstrate that the degree of metal mobilization and acid production in natural waters correlates well with the type of hydrothermally altered rock and structural features in which these water interact. Quartz-sericite-pyrite, quartz-alunite, and argillic alteration assemblages are associated with some of the most naturally acidic, high-metal waters in the study area; calcite-bearing propylitic rocks are related to the most pristine waters and buffer sulfate-rich, acidic waters produced by pyrite oxidation. Trace metals in natural waters are mostly derived from enargite, zinc-rich tetrahedrite and sphalerite. Pyrite oxidation contributes very little with respect to base-metals in these natural waters.

The basic theme of this symposium and panel Is Rotation Pads: Are They Optimized? There Is a. reason for phrasing the title In the form of a question. There Is not only the technical competency which we must address; there Is the operating philosophy that must be evaluated on the part of both the customer and the supplier. Customers desire reagents which are trouble-free and capable of providing that extra amount of selectivity or recovery. When they receive ft, after the supplier has provided several years of Internal research, one of the first concerns/complaints Is the price of the product. This has a tendency to rapidly reduce a supplier's support level In the future. Suppliers are equally guilty from another perspective. When they approach a customer to Introduce a product, they often attempt to market by offering only a price Incentive. They then wonder why a customer doesn't respond Immediately to the incentive. They are often oblivious to the fact that the reagent cost is such a minor aspect of the operating budget, and the customer has many more pressing problems on a day-to-day basis In comparison to the reagent cost. We need to establish the understanding that reagent cost Is an Inconsequential cost of operation, and yet has such a disproportionately high Impact on the success of the entire operation. This understanding Is required by both the customer and the supplier. We say to each other,' why are we discussing this since this has been obvious for some time?' The reason is relatively simple in that we talk about it, acknowledge it, and yet we do not adhere to it. The supplier provides a product along with test data containing statistics, analysis, recovery, grade and cost calculations while most of the time ignoring the operating technique which must be applicable In the plant In order to optimize the product. He expects the reagent to be substituted In the plant for the existing reagent and ft works or does not work after trying several variables. The operating management Is equally guilty, In order to best explain this to both the customer and the supplier, ft becomes necessary to review the basic purpose of the major reagents utilized In flotation. A collector is basically to Impact selective, maximum water repellency on the surface of a particular mineral, The frother has the purpose of providing a chemically stabilized membrane on the surface of the bubble at the air-water interphase. This, then, provides a host environment for the attachment of the collector-coated mineral to a bubble. The depressant functions In the reverse of the collector and must demonstrate the same or greater degree of selectivity than expected of a collector. The key area which has been Ignored Is the rate by which these reactions occur and Interrelate. This has a very specific effect on the operating technique and the compatibility of the chemistry, equipment, and the operator himself. Researchers, suppliers, and customers provide reams of data to demonstrate how their products or design produce, for example, higher kinetics, more selectivity, or more recovery. The Information is often true. After all, we are all learned men and laboratory and actual plant data do not lie. However, we must remember the theme of this symposium and panel: Flotation Plants: Are They Optimized? and Optimizing of Flotation Reagents? The direct, honest comment to the two titles is very simple. OF COURSE THEY ARE NOT The plants, equipment, and reagents had better not be optimized or else we are in trouble. The Issue of this panel discussion is to approach this subject from a slightly different or perhaps mainly Ignored aspects of optimizing reagents in flotation. When we have reagents which provide higher kinetics, more selectivity, and better recovery, how do we use them? Since each reagent has a different physical characteristics of froth, rate of recovery, volume effect on the compatibility of equipment, and many more aspects too numerous to mention, the question which has been severely Ignored Is, 'What degree of study and cooperation by both the supplier and the operating management has been conducted In order to prepare the operator for maximizing the performance of a reagent In relation to the rest of the system?" Prior to testing a new reagent, how much time Is spent to bring the actual operator(s) Into the program to make them feel part of the program? How much time is spent explaining to the operator on the float floor how to possibly take advantage of a reagent with faster kinetics or one which Is Inherently more selective? What

The objectives are established by stages in the life cycle of a mining operation as it goes from a prospect to a development project and on to a mine. This paper summarizes the elements of a mining geologist's role, with examples highlighted from the preceding papers.

A high-strength, industrial-grade membrane filter- cloth capable of high flow rates and sub-micrometric particle retention has been developed. A filtration system using this filter- combined with special filtration techniques and using tubular-filters makes possible the filtration of many difficult-to-jilter slurries. Small, discrete, slowly-settling particles are formed into filter cakes that when pulsed of the membrane filter cloth do not redisperse but settle rapidly to form a dense filter under- flow. A positive separation of solids from liquids is obtained.

It is shown that dewatering of fine coal particles (D50 = 21 µm) is enhanced near the point-of-zero-charge. The coal surface is modified by the addition of copper ions and by adjusting the pH to precipitate surface-active metal hydroxy species, which promote agglomeration and produce low-moisture cakes. Filtration kinetics data are used in calculating filter cake parameters from an integrated form of Darcy's law. The influence of copper ions and pH on filter cake parameters and the correlations among them are presented.

The properties of Neutra-Fix® and Neutra-Ment®, two new lime substitutes for treating acid mine drainage (AMD), have been compared with lime and Allcament®, two products presently in use for AMD treatment. The two new products are basically dolomitic byproducts and produce sludges that are more compact than those from lime. Sludge settling rates are faster than lime with iron concentrations after 24 hours that comply with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations. Material utilization and optimum pH are reported.

Ozonation was evaluated as an alternative treatment process for leachates of municipal landfills. The study was carried out on leachate from the Fresh Kills Landfill, New York City. The leachate has strong tea color and BOD5 ranging between 90 mg/L and 130 mg/L. The average COD, TOC and NH3-N concentrations were 1800 mg/L , 550 mg/L, and 665 mg/L, respectively. The kinetics of the process were studied in a sparged batch reactor by developing concentration- time profiles for residual color and TOC. Continuous flow experiments were then carried out at two selected contact times. The process was found to be effective in the treatment of leachates for color and TOC removal.

Based on the current results of field practice and on experimental data obtained in the laboratory with a suitable testing apparatus, the industrial operation of diamond wire cutting can be simulated by means of a mathematical model capable of predicting the cutting velocity and the wear rate of the tool, and thence the cost figures, achievable for a variety of conditions (kind of rock, size and shape of the cut, position of the equipment) according to a predetermined setting strategy (peripheral velocity, pull- back force). The paper gives a short outline of the model and discusses the simulation results obtained in a number of cases aiming at singling out the most favourable conditions for a cost-effective use of diamond wire.

Expansion strain and stress that exist in floor rocks and that are due to the presence of water, were derived from a basic theory of mechanics. The results indicate that water stress and strain are the important factors that cause failure of the floor rocks and induce floor heave.

The optimisation of geopolymer synthesis was studied bymixing low Ca electric arc ferronickel slag with kaolinite, sodium silicate solution, sodium hydroxide pellets and water. The pulp was heated at low temperatures and left for curing at room temperature. Through statistical analysis it was shown that the factors with the most statistically significant effects on the compressive strength of the produced geopolymers are slag particle size and aging period. XRD and FTIR studies provide useful information regarding the progress of geopolymerisation mechanisms. Finally, studies regarding the durability and structural integrity of the produced geopolymers were also carried out.

The application of on-line ash analyzers in coal processing has become widespread. However, the analyzers are employed largely in monitoring, blending or sorting applications. Just recently has work begun on using on-line ash, moisture and/or solids data for plant control; and even more recently for localized circuit or unit operation control. Process Technology, Inc. (PTI) has since 1990 placed several bulk coal and slurry analyzers in practice where Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) loops are used to manipulate controllable variables in real time. This technology is now being advanced by PTI. Unit operations where FLC has been employed in feedback loops using on-line ash analyzers include: heavy media vessels, cyclones, concentrating tables and froth flotation. The design, implementation and improvements attainable in preparation plant control using on-line ash analyzers are outlined in this paper.

A brittle solid broken by crushing or impact, results in a mass size distribution curve having a straight line segment when plotted on log-log paper. Depending on the mineral, the slope of this straight line segment ranges from a maximum of one for materials like glass and quartz to values of one half or less. Theoretical derivations of the size distribution, such as the Gaudin-Meloy model, yield a slope of one and only one. When the Gaudin-Meloy model is modified to assume that not all cracks terminate on a preexisting surface, the new model predicts that size distribution slopes, depending on the type of brittle solid, will be less than one. There is a measurable physical parameter that will predict the slope. In addition the model predicts that particles from such a size distributions will have negative corners and peaks - indentations. Moreover the model predicts that particle shape will systematically change with decreasing particle size. Finally, this new physical model of comminution may be experimentally tested.

In this paper, a model is developed for a resin anchor bolt system in which the smooth bar is modeled by using one-dimensional truss elements, and the resin annulus is modeled by using axisymmetric elements. These two submodels are combined and then incorporated into an existing computer code called Roofbolt. After this development, all of the components in the resin anchor bolt system, including smooth bar, bearing plate and resin annulus, can be correctly modeled.

The Bullfrog Mine is an underground gold mine that uses the underhand-cut-and-fill mining method. The portal was established on June 18, 1991. Mining is expected to be completed by the summer of 1999. This paper starts by discussing what it took to get from nothing to 2000 tons-per-day backfill, and ends with a hindsight commentary on things that did and did not help.

The expanded west pit of the 15 Mta (13.6 stpy) El Cerrejon mine will eventually reach a maximum depth of 270 m (890 ft). Slope-stability evaluations indicated that this depth, combined with structural complexities, would create a serious risk of footwall instability. Stabilization calls for anchoring the footwall by the installation of 9- to 33-m- (30- to 108 ft-) long multistrand steel cable bolts. For each of the 15-m- (50-ft-) high mining benches, a row of bolts is installed with variable horizontal spacing, depending on the dip magnitude. Cable bolting is now standard operating practice, and an estimated 11,800 bolts will be installed during the life of the mine. Results to date have been satisfactory in terms of the stability condition of the bolted slopes.
