Minter's excellent recent paper (1990) on the great paleoplacer gold deposits of the Witwatersrand and its subsequent discussion (Cheney, 1991) and reply (Minter, 1991) provide an informative, interesting and up-to-date review of the geology of these unique ores and some long enigmatic questions regarding their origin. Clearly summarized by Minter (1990) are the compelling sedimentologic and stratigraphic relationships indicating that the Central Rand Group conglomerates are ancient placers and documenting the fluvio-deltaic conditions of their transport and deposition. As Minter (1991) indicates, Cheney's discussion broadens Minter's 1990 coverage of the subject by considering higher and lower stratigraphic units and by adding detailed comments concerning recently published information about metamorphic and age relationships. Cheney's discussion and Minter's reply also readdress the old controversy of epigenetic hydrothermal vs. syndepositional placer origin for these deposits. This controversy has been resurrected by: • recent recognition of hydrothermally-altered granites (HAGS) in the older Archean basement rocks that lie unconformably beneath the Dominion Group rocks north and west of the Witwatersrand depository; • recognition of greenschist metamorphic assemblages in the Witwatersrand strata; and • the presence of interpreted epigenetic mineral assemblages and textures in some of the deposits. These relationships are briefly discussed by Cheney who suggests they may result from later, superimposed metamorphism and deformation and do not prove that the gold was introduced by epigenetic/metamorphogenic processes. In his paper, Minter (1990) cited the 1986 abstract of a subsequently published paper by Hutchinson and Viljoen (1988) who also considered many of these aspects and attempted to integrate them all in a broad genetic hypothesis. In addition, they emphasized the additional important problem of determining the source for the Witwatersrand gold. Although this issue was partially addressed by Reimer (1984), Mossman and Dyer (1985) and Reimer and Mossman (1990), the question has been generally under emphasized in earlier work and was, therefore, not stressed by Minter and Cheney. Reimer (1985) also emphasized the importance of weathering of the basin's Archean hinterland and its affects on Witwatersrand sedimentation.

This paper presents essentially the logistic and practical aspects involved for in situ testing of mine paste backfill with a self-boring pressuremeter. The investigation discussed in this paper is part of an extensive and ongoing research project to identify and validate an in situ testing technique for cemented mine backfill such as hydraulic or paste backfill as well as Insitu behavior of backfilled stopes. After a literature review on field testing of soils and past experiments on mine backfill in situ testing, the self-boring pressuremeter was selected as the most appropriate instrument for this task. The authors presents in this paper the technical aspect involved in a field trials that was conducted in a Canadian underground mine using paste backfill. The results of this first successful trials show that self-boring pressuremeter test can provide high quality and reliable backfill characteristics results, using analytical techniques developed for soils (Ouellet et al., 1998). The parameters obtained were: estimation of the lateral stress in the ground, the soil stress-strain response and the soil strength. The logistic and equipment required to conduct such testing underground is fully described. Performance achieved in the field and technical difficulties encountered are highlighted. Recommendations for future experiments with such instruments are given. Some potential technical improvements to better adapt this in situ testing technique to mine backfill are proposed.

The blending of clay minerals with other minerals provides opportunities to make special ceramic materials such as cordierite and other minerals that have very special ceramic properties including low heat expansion, high fired strength, low absorption, and other desired qualities.

Column experiments were performed to determine the ability of Madison aquifer material to adsorb arsenic and other constituents in a heavily mined watershed of the Black Hills in western South Dakota. The Madison aquifer is a karstic dolomite and limestone reservoir that is exposed on the flanks of the Black Hills. Streams that cross the Madison in the eastern Black Hills typically lose all their flow to the aquifer at sinkholes. In this work, Madison aquifer material was obtained for loading of six-inch diameter columns, which were backfilled with Madison aquifer water. Stream water then was allowed to displace the aquifer water during column testing in order to simulate mixing of the two waters at sinkholes and to determined adsorption of arsenic and other dissolved constituents. Initial results show that some adsorption of arsenic occurred when compared to more conservative tracers such as nitrate.

Quartz-limestone feed mixtures were ground in a laboratory-size, choke-fed, high- pressure roll mill. As compared to individually ground minerals, the harder component (quartz) in the product mixture is coarser, and the softer component (limestone) is finer. An energy split index is introduced for quantifying the disproportionate split of the mill energy between the feed constituents. This index is incorporated into a grinding kinetic model for simulation of the product size distributions of the mineral components as a function of energy input to the mill. The self-similar character of the size distributions is analyzed and an energy-size reduction relationship for the roll mill is highlighted.

The importance of a power economy that is efficient both in technological and economic terms has been clearly recognized in recent years. In 1977 the German Federal Government therefore introduced its Energy Research and Energy Technologies Program 1977-1980, which consolidates the government activities in the field of nuclear and non-nuclear energy research. The priority objectives of this program can be summarized as follows: safeguarding the medium- to long-term energy supply in the Federal Republic of Germany at reasonable overall macroeconomic cost, taking into account the requirements of environmental protection and the safety of the population. In the field of coal mining technologies, about 200 research projects are currently under way. A total of DM 1.7 billion is earmarked for research to be conducted in this area between 1977 and 1980.

Modern coal cleaning technologies have allowed coal preparation facilities to become quite efficient at removing sulfur compounds, waste rock and low grade coals from run of mine coal. Up to 50% of the raw mined coal stream may end up as refuse, particularly when the coal originates from longwall mining operations, or is high in partings, rock and impurities. The refuse materials vary from coarse materials removed by physical screening to very fine materials removed by floatation and density separation processes. Coal refuse piles are also known by a variety of other names including "waste dumps", "gob piles" and "slate dumps". The potential hazards of improperly reclaimed refuse include contamination of surface and groundwaters by acidic leachates and runoff, erosion and sedimentation into nearby watersheds, spontaneous combustion, disturbance of topsoil borrow areas, and damage from landslides should large slope failures occur. Many of these problems have been particularly acute for abandoned refuse piles, and modern regulations attempt to minimize the environmental impact of coal refuse disposal operations.

Reserve depletion in Central Appalachia is continuously creating unique ground conditions for underground coal mines with many of these difficult environments directly attributable to multiple seam mining and/or deeper overburdens. While many empirical studies have been performed in an effort to improve understanding of these problems along with potentially improving safety and extraction, many of the difficulties encountered lie outside of the normal realm of expected behavior. This is often the case when mining in bump prone ground, where additional concerns are introduced and design buffers are warranted. The boundary element software LaModel was used to study three bump events in a deep-cover, multiple-seam reserve located in Harlan county in the Kentucky region of Central Appalachia. This region is notoriously bump prone due to significant areas of deep cover, the presence of strong to massive lithology (such as sandstone), and an extensive history of underground mining that increases the probability of multiple seam interactions. Multiple seam interactions are best understood with respect to site-specific parameters, including both the geological and geometrical components of interburden, overburden and mine workings. Initially, empirical-based approaches (ARMPS/AMSS) were used when attempting to back-analyze the bump events. However, it was recognized that a more detailed investigation was necessary to understand the fundamental causes/conditions associated with the bump events. Consequently, the LaModel study resulted in a mine-specific calibration method for the reserve. With this method in place, enhanced bump prediction throughout the reserve is expected, such that the stability, recovery and safety of future mining may be improved.

Whole ore or other process streams are being transported from mines to remote processing facilities for multiple reasons, such as improved project economics, maximum utilization of capital, and minimization of environmental risk. Case studies will be presented from a variety of operations. Glenbrook Nickel processes ore from their deposit and receives ore from New Caledonia, crushes and dries the ore, and transports it inland to the smelter. The Mule Canyon and Rosebud ore bodies truck-haul their ores to the Lone Tree and Twin Creeks processing plants. Pegasus Gold hauls their Diamond Hill ore to their Montana Tunnels facilities, and Sierrita pumps solution to an existing tank house 8 miles away for electrolytic recovery.

INTRODUCTION Tunnel construction has always been an extremely high risk form of contracting primarily due to the inaccessability of information concerning the ground conditions to be encountered during excavation. We certainly make every effort to overcome this problem through borings, geological research, site visits, etc.; but at best owners, engineers and contractors alike are only able to interpolate a relatively small amount of factual data from isolated sections of the project into a forecast of ground conditions for the entire project. In essence this becomes an "educated guessing game" with risk to reward ratios (and subsequently the bid price) in direct relationship to the contractor's confidence in the quality of the guess. In many instances it is economically or physically infeasible to obtain information and of course the total picture is never known until the project is complete. This problem effects the contract format as well as price. The contractor's ability to handle unforseen problems on the project become extremely important as to the project's overall success. The following pages contain an actual case history of a project which affords an excellent example of the entire spectrum of situations resulting from tunnel construction in difficult ground conditions.

During the next 15 years, US coal production is expected to double, with the increased production evenly divided between the East and the West. Along with greater production, coal export markets should increase dramatically from East, West, and Gulf Coast ports. The annual overseas export capacity of US coal-loading terminals is expected to rise from 147.1 Mt (162.1 million st) in 1981 to a minimum of 278.1 Mt (306.6 million st) in 1985, according to the US Maritime Administration. Increased coal production and use will lead to more development of import and export terminals, a vital link in the coal transportation chain. With continually escalating capital costs and the competitive markets that the terminals will serve, a well designed and efficient terminal is necessary. This article begins a two-part series that presents concepts presently used in coal export terminal design. Part I looks at site selection factors and equipment needs, while Part II will examine environmental considerations in building a terminal as well as typical capital and operating costs. The world is nearing the end of the oil era. In a few years oil will not be available to sustain the growth rate and increasing standard of living we have known in our lifetime. The big question is what energy era are we moving into? With the decline of readily available oil reserves and rapidly increasing prices, many countries are trying to switch to alternate energy forms. While intensive efforts to find new oil reserves continue, alternate energy sources such as natural gas, coal, synthetic fuels, nuclear, hydroelectric, solar, and wind power are being developed. Recent indications are that coal is expected to bridge the energy gap over the next 25-30 years until the technology and economics of the alternate energy forms reach satisfactory levels. Use of coal for energy is receiving strong attention due to its long-term availability (200-300 years minimum), relative ease of development, and its low cost per unit of power produced. By the year 2000, it is expected that 25% of world energy supply will be met by direct coal combustion and possibly another 5-10% by synthetic fuel from coal. Coal's expanding share in the world energy market, along with an increase in coking coal requirements, will result in a large increase in the world's seaborne coal trade. Recent statistics and projections for the future are shown in Table 1. This phenomenal development rate includes increases in both coking and thermal coal requirements. Because of the rapid increase of seaborne coal trade during the last 10 years and the even greater projected increase of trade to 2000, various sectors of the coal industry are faced with enormous technical challenges and huge investments in equipment, land, transportation systems, and port facilities. Very large bulk terminals are under development throughout the world. Latest surveys indicate that there are about 30 new coal export and import terminals under consideration and at least 30 existing terminals have expansion programs planned or underway. With the high cost of borrowed capital and rapid inflation rates there is great emphasis on new planning and design techniques to minimize capital and operating costs of coal transportation systems. Terminals A total coal supply system can be considered to consist of one or more mines; a train, barge, truck, or other haulage system; an export terminal; a fleet of bulk carriers; a receiving terminal; and possibly, local inland distribution networks that include barges and railways. Terminals, though only a small link in the total transportation system, play a key role in overall system efficiency. At ports or inland distribution centers, terminals act as transportation links bringing trains, ships, barges, or trucks together for cargo transfer and temporary storage. A well-designed terminal can provide maximum independence between two modes of transportation and optimum freedom for intermodal interference. A terminal acts as a buffer between the two transportation modes by providing sufficient storage capacity so a ship need not wait for its cargo on, for example, a train-by-train basis, but can load immediately from the ready stock. Similarly, a train need not wait for a ship to unload its contents but can dump immediately into storage. The Los Angeles Metro Red Line has installed high density polyethylene (HDPE) as a gas and water barrier around all subsurface structures. The paper reviews the geological setting and resulting need for the barrier. HDPE installation practices are outlined, as are the risks to the barrier, from normal placement methods. Testing and inspection methods used to assure a quality installation are described, and also the field tag method for recording deficiencies and their repair. Specifications and installation changes that will be incorporated into subsequent contracts to improve the quality of the installation are high lighted. The cause of the fire that destroyed part of a tunnel is reviewed as are the revised precautions put in place to prevent a recurrence.

The first of two initial 650-mw units of the Paradise Steam Station, located on the banks of the Green River in the south-central portion of the western Kentucky coal basin, is scheduled for operation in late fall of 1962. Location of the site is shown on the map of figure 1. This plant will be the eighth, large-capacity,, modern station built by TVA in a series starting with Johnsonville, operated first in 1951. During that period of 10 years,, unit sizes have increased from a capability of 125 mw to 500 mw at the recently completed Widows Creek Unit 7 addition and at Paradise to 650 mw. This new unit will take its place in a power system that serves an area of some 80,000; square miles with a present installed capacity of over 12,000 mw. Upon completion of the Paradise units and other additional hydro and steam units presently under construction, the system capacity will have reached over 15,000 mw. Projected load estimates indicate that this system will provide a margin' of slightly under 10 percent of dependable capacity above peak demand at that tire. One Paradise 650-mw unit at that time will represent approximately 4 percent of the total system installed capacity.

Fluxes are used to promote pyrometallurgical processes that rely on adhesion (soldering or brazing) or fusion (gas and arc welding) to join metallic surfaces. In the adhesive processes, the metal surfaces to be joined are not melted; the join is formed using a filler metal with lower melting point than the base metal. Fusion welding involves use of heat in excess of the melting point of the base metal. The fused joint may be achieved either by simply fusing together metal surfaces brought in contact with each other or by introducing additional molten metal of similar composition to form a fused joint. ADHESIVE PROCESSES--SOLDERING AND BRAZING In order for molten filler metal, solder or braze, to spread in a manner that creates a successful join; the work surfaces on the base metal must be thoroughly cleansed. Fluxes remove stubborn oxide films and other surface contaminants, promote wetting of the work surfaces, add fluidity to the solder or braze, and enhance workability and ease of spreading. Brazing processes involve higher temperatures than those reached in soldering. Brazing fluxes, which must remain active and effective at the higher temperatures, differ from those employed in soldering. Some common fluxes used in adhesive processes are rosin for soldering tin and electrical connections, hydrochloric acid for use in soldering galvanized iron and other zinc surfaces, and borax for brazing. Soldering and brazing are similar processes, the primary difference being the temperature at which the joining operation is carried out. Soldered joints, produced with low-melting-point fillers (solders) that melt and flow at temperature less that 450°C (Althouse et al., 1988) can sustain loads of 1 to 1.7 MPa for extended periods of time (Anon., 1966). Brazing involves the use of filler materials with melting points commonly above 500°C and generally provides stronger joints than those obtained with solder. Both processes require local application of heat to melt and spread the filler so that the molten filler can wet (adhere to) the base metals by alloying and diffusion. Soldering Soldering is a means of joining metals by adhesion using a metallic bonding alloy as the filler, commonly a mixture of lead and tin. However, the adhesion of solder depends more on its ability to be keyed into minute surface irregularities than on alloying. The most familiar application is to provide and secure electrical connections. Soft solders can range from 1 to 70% tin with the remainder mostly lead. However, for general-purpose, soft-solder work, the alloy is commonly 50% lead-50% tin. Higher lead contents provide a wider range in the melting temperature and, for this reason, a 60% lead-40% tin alloy, which yields a mushy mixture, is used for wiped joints in lead sheet and pipe work. Conversely, 40% lead-60% tin alloys are used in soldering tin and other low- melting-point materials for which a narrower range of melting temperature is required. There are numerous other solder compositions such as tin-silver, 95% tin-5% silver and antimony-tin, 95% tin and 5% antimony (Carlin, Jr., 1992). Heat needed to melt and spread the solders is commonly provided by electrically heated, copper-tipped soldering irons or by means of torches; the solder is applied by hand, usually face-fed by means of wire. For wiped joints in plumbing and lead-cable splicing, the solder is manipulated with cloth pads. The molten solder wets the joint surfaces and is drawn, by surface tension, into minute fissures and capillary openings. Other applications involve use of induction heaters and furnaces with pre-shaped solder appropriately placed prior to fluxing and heating. In some processes, the joints are immersed in molten solder. Constituents and Role of Soldering Fluxes: Soldering fluxes generally fall into one of three categories: highly corrosive fluxes, intermediate fluxes, and noncorrosive fluxes. These same categories are sometimes designated inorganic, organic and rosin-based respectively (Althouse et al., 1988). Common constituents of each group are discussed briefly below. Corrosive Fluxes (Inorganic). Work with aluminum, magnesium, stainless steel, high alloy steel, aluminum bronzes, and silicon bronzes is carried out at temperatures in the upper portion of the range for solder operations. Soldering these materials requires use of highly active, corrosive fluxes to remove and prevent the formation of the especially stubborn, hard, oxide films that form on these materials upon exposure to the atmosphere. The corrosive fluxes consist of inorganic acids and salts that are applied either as pastes or dry. They are active at elevated temperatures and, since they remain active after the soldering is completed, must be completely removed. The main constituent of most corrosive fluxes is zinc chloride with a melting temperature well above the solidus temperature of most commercial tin-lead solders. It is made by the action of hydrochloric acid on zinc. When zinc chloride is used alone, un- melted particles of this corrosive salt get caught up in the joint and weaken it. For this reason, other inorganic salts such as ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) or sodium chloride (NaCl) may be added to lower the melting temperature. A mixture of zinc chloride and ammonium chloride is very effective because the excellent oxide reducing properties of ammonium chloride and the protective action of the molten zinc chloride combine to produce a fluxing action superior to that achieved when either is used alone. Introduction Comminution efficiency, as measured by relating circuit performance to the consumption of energy and the time and money required, can be determined by the following comparisons: Theoretical efficiency: The theoretical efficiency is the actual energy consumed in a comminution machine compared to the theoretical energy required to perform the size reduction. Operating efficiency: The operating efficiency compares the operating work index of a comminution machine to the Bond work index of the ore, as determined from bench-scale crushing and grindability tests or pilot-plant tests. Economic efficiency: The economic efficiency is comparing income from production to predicted income. Key words: Comminution, Bond work index, Grinding, Crushing, Ball mills, Rod Mills. Theoretical efficiency In their book Process Engineering of Size Reduction - Ball Milling, Austin, Klimpel and Luckie (1984) stated that, "We have tried throughout this book to avoid the use of the term grinding efficiency because the degree of conversion of energy to useful size reduction is an ill-defined concept. In addition, the only efficiency, which is of real interest, is the meeting of product specifications at the minimum cost." The National Materials Advisory Board, National Re¬search Council (1981), in the abstract of a report titled "Comminution and Energy Consumption" stated that, "Up to 99% of the energy consumed in grinding these ores may be expended in the movement of machinery, with noise and heat the undesirable byproducts, thus leaving only 1% of the energy available for size reduction. Coupled with this is evidence that many of today's crushing and grinding techniques not only are antiquated but have little or no scientific base of understanding." Throughout the past 50-plus years, grinding efficiency has been referred to as being from 1 % to 10%. The measurable basis for these observations is difficult to establish, but they appear to be based on production performance compared to theoretical energy requirements for the work done. The theoretical energy requirements were determined from the energy required to break a single particle or a thin layer of monosized particles by compression or by a single impact from an impact-testing device. King, Tavaras and Middlemiss (1997), in a paper titled "Establishing the energy efficiency of a ball mill" described such a test. These batch single-breakage tests generally do not duplicate the continuous-breakage process in the comminution machinery used in ore concentrators. Operating efficiency The currently available crushers and grinding mills are fed at a controlled continuous flow rate, and they impart the breakage pattern needed to produce the desired size reduc¬tion. While theoretically inefficient, they are the most practical comminution machines available. The operation of this machinery is relatively simple and can be controlled with available control systems. The essential factors in determining the operating efficiency of comminution machines are energy, as consumed in the machinery, and the required energy, as determined from test work. Bond work indices, obtained from bench-scale or pilot-plant crushability and grindability tests are used in the following Bond equation (Bond, 1960) to determine the energy required to produce the required size reduction

Surface and underground mining operations are often hindered by unknown tunnels and slopes and the precise locations of adjacent workings. Mine safety and planning are adversely affected especially in previously undermined areas where historical records are incomplete or nonexistent. The results of several ground penetrating radar (GPR) studies for the detection of known mine tunnels in underground coal, salt and gold mines are presented. A case study to locate unknown, abandoned mine workings at a surface gold mine successfully located all workings to a depth of 11 m (36 ft).

Since 1992 the Grasberg Mine, located in the remote regions of Indonesia, has utilized the Modular Mining System. Over the last several years, major steps have been taken to maximize this productivity enhancement system. These steps include; the Automated Lineup, the Linear Program upgrade, tracking of Mean Time Between Failure, a MEDS system interface, a VMIS system interface, and implementation of the new Graphical Operator Interface Console with Global Positioning, This application of new technology and innovation has lead to improved performance, understanding and reporting, as well as the quality of the Indonesian Engineers. These efforts have contributed 10 Grasberg achieving one of the lowest mining costs in the copper industry.

The Zadra, AARL and organic elution processes and variations of them are presently widely used to recover gold from activated carbon. Despite this the study of the kinetics of elution have received relatively little attention. It is the aim of this study to investigate the rate processes taking place during elution in both inorganic and organic solutions. Batch adsorption and elution rate and equilibrium experiments were performed. The spatial concentration of gold inside carbon particles at various stages of the adsorption and elution processes were measured with a scanning electron microscope using an image analyzer to control and manage the micro-analysis data. The activated carbon particles exhibited film and intra-particle mass transfer rate- controlled behaviour during adsorption in a caustic aqueous solution at 95°C. Elutions in the aqueous caustic acetone solution at 30°C and the caustic aqueous solution at 95°C were unaffected by change in stirring rate. Elution was modelled by desorption reaction rate-control at the outer surface of the carbon particle. Adsorption and elution isotherms under duplicated solution conditions showed reasonable agreement for the inorganic solution and a large disparity for the organic solution.

Recent advances in rock-mass mechanics and computational technology now allow for the stability analysis of excavations in "wet" mines where mining-induced changes in rock mass deformation and fluid flow are coupled and time dependent. In addition to water pressure and flow in jointed, possibly porous, rock masses, all of the usual dry-mine parameters, including the premining stress state and rock-mass properties, are taken into account. Finite-element analyses of shafts and tunnels, as circular, elliptical, rectangular and arched-rectangular hole shapes excavated in an initially stressed and pressurized rock mass, indicate that the usual guidelines for optimum shape and orientation of single openings apply. Here, optimum means maximizing the minimum wall safety factor or, equivalently, minimizing the peak stress concentration. The results also show that failure originates in elements at the wall and the minimum safety factor at the wall in the wet case is always less than the dry case, regardless of drainage time allowed.

A longwall-based coal mine in Australia, referred to in this paper as AusMine Colliery, experienced windblasts resulting from goaf falls. Windblasts were the cause of serious injuries and threatened the continued operation of the mine. A microseismic early warning system was installed and a significant success rate in providing early warning of large roof instability resulting in high velocity windblasts, has been achieved. Early warning of goafing is accepted as an operational tool on the mine. Severe demands are placed on the operator in terms of 'real time' interpretation. The development of an expert system allowed for a probabilistic approach to achieve automatic alarms. This paper will quantify the success, failure and false alarm rates achieved by manual operation and automatic expert system-based decisions making, respectively.
