"Physical impurity transfer in solvent extraction (SX) has a significant impact on operating costs, electrowinning (EW) performance, and cathode quality. Some operations use a wash stage to limit impurity transfer by diluting the entrained pregnant leach solution (PLS) to prevent direct transfer to EW. Wash stage operating conditions vary impacting impurity transfer. A number of factors impact dilution efficiency including mixer continuity, wash aqueous acidity, and organic quality. The impact of these variables on dilution efficiency was studied and compared to current industry practice. INTRODUCTION With the exception of iron, impurity transfer in copper SX is due to PLS carryover in the loaded organic via aqueous entrainment and crud movement. The quantity of impurity transfer is influenced by many variables including operating set points, organic quality, and settler housekeeping. Crud management and treatment is a common practice aimed at minimizing transfer of impurities to EW. Crud is a complex solid-stabilized emulsion of aqueous and organic[9]. As such, it contains a large aqueous component and the associated impurities (from the PLS). A common practice is to remove interfacial crud to prevent movement. Additionally, mixer continuity can be altered to enable compaction and improve the efficiency of interfacial pumping[10]. Understanding the factors impacting aqueous entrainment and optimizing the available controls should be a key focus for any operation. Aqueous entrainment in the loaded organic can be impacted by: • Mixer continuity • Mixer organic/aqueous (O/A) ratio • Mixer speed and impeller type • Organic and aqueous depths • Specific settler flow • Use of settler internals (picket fences, coalescing packs) • Organic quality • Design and operation of loaded organic tanks Conventional thought is to run the E1 mixer in aqueous continuity to reduce aqueous entrainment. Generally, O/A ratios close to 1:1 result in improved metallurgical and physical performance. Mixer speeds should be chosen to achieve acceptable stage efficiencies while minimizing over-mixing. Organic depths can be increased in the E1 stage to increase retention time and minimize aqueous entrainment. Settler internals can also be used, but require maintenance to maintain effectiveness. The quality of the plant organic inventory will impact physical performance. Poor organic quality can lead to higher phase disengagement times increasing impurity transfer to the electrolyte. Additionally, the design and operation of the loaded organic tank can impact impurity transfer[8]. Despite the variables that can be used to reduce aqueous entrainment and crud movement, impurity transfer is still an issue in some operations. For these operations with high PLS impurity concentrations, a wash stage may be beneficial to manage impurity transfer. Understanding factors impacting wash stage performance is important to optimize performance and limit impurity transfer."

The successful genetic manipulation of T. ferrooxidans is partly dependent on an understanding of the molecular biology of the organism. For optimum controlled expression of foreign DNA in T. ferrooxidans it is important that donor DNA is derived from bacteria that are genetically similar to T. ferrooxidans or placed under the control of T. ferrooxidans transcriptional promoters. Several structural genes and their controlling regions from T. ferrooxidans have been isolated and their DNA sequenced. These include the genes that encode the nitrogenase enzyme (nifHDK genes), glutamine synthetase (glnA gene) and the recA gene. These genes and the identical genes from a wide variety of other bacteria have been compared at levels of DNA sequence, protein sequence. Where possible, gene expression as well as transcriptional control and protein function of the cloned genes were tested in the enteric bacterium Escherichia coli. The two genes involved in nitrogen metabolism were either expressed or possessed the necessary elements for expression in other bacteria. In contrast the recA gene was not expressed in E. coli from its own promoter. The two gene products that would be tested (glnA and recA) were fully functional in E. coli. The relevance of these findings to the genetic manipulation of T. ferrooxidans is discussed

The results of an investigation to characterize the chalcopyrite/solution interface are presented. Several techniques were used, including galvanostatic and steady-state polarization, cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy. The results show that the dissolution of chalcopyrite was incongruent. Initially, at low potentials (< 0.12 V), iron species were released that led to the growth of an iron-deficient sulfide (IDS) layer (referred to as the "reacted layer" in this paper). Depending on the solution&apos;s composition, the dissolved iron might reprecipitate as a hydroxide layer. In the potential range of 0.12 V < E < 0.23 V, the IDS layer was passivating. In comparison, development of a passivating IDS layer under galvanostatic conditions led to a jump in potential to 0.48 V. The IDS layer began to dissolve at potentials greater than 0.24 V. The dissolved species precipitated to form a product layer in alkaline solutions. Continued oxidation involved diffusion of species through the reacted and product layers. At higher potentials (> 0.48 V), further oxidation led to the dissolution of the copper and sulfur species, with a resultant breakdown of the IDS layer. The changes in surface-coating properties, resulting from various electrochemical treatments, are discussed.

INTRODUCTION The facility water balance and maintenance of sufficient excess storage volume in the solution control system are often amongst the most critical facets of design and operation of heap leach facilities in cold, snowy climates. The purpose of this paper is to summarize and discuss climatic and operational factors which have a significant impact on heap leach water balance evaluations in high snowfall climates. Example water balance simulations are presented for proposed heap leach projects located in areas subject to high snowfall in the northwestern United States. The climatic data input to these simulations represent both net evaporative and net precipitation climates. FACTORS AFFECTING WATER BALANCE EVALUATIONS The combined effects of seasonal operations, re1atively low evaporative losses, and potentially large inflows to the solution control system from snowpack and spring storms require an enhanced awareness of the factors which impact facility water balance. Unlike operations at mines in more arid climates, seasonal excess water rather than a shortage of make-up water is the rule. A thorough understanding of a number of factors, including regulatory constraints, climatic influences, and impact of operating philosophy and techniques, is critical to successful development of an incident-free heap leach operation under high snowfall climatic conditions. A process water circuit schematic for a typical heap leach operation is shown on Figure 1.

Theories are proposed to explain consistently a class of phenomena and are established with experiences, hypotheses, and laws. Not all concepts need to be presented in a mathematical format. A comminution theory must incorporate fracture physics, particle breakage, stressing events in crushers and mills, material transport, comminution kinetics and models, etc. In this paper the state of knowledge of some of these aspects is discussed. An attempt has been made to show the benefit of theory in comminution practice.

Monitoring on Whites waste rock dump at Rum Jungle has provided a unique opportunity to assess the effectiveness of a cover in the medium term. Temperature and oxygen concentration profiles have been measured continuously, from some years before the cover was put in place in 1983 until the present. Lysimeters have been used to measure water infiltration rates. Heat and oxygen transport processes in the dump have been modelled and compared with field data, enabling oxidation rates to be quantified both before and after the cover was put in place. It has been found that the cover reduced the overall oxidation rate to between one third and one half of the uncovered rate. There is evidence that both the overall oxidation rate and water infiltration rate have increased in recent years.

The use of chemical additives in ultrafine grinding will be reviewed in this paper for the case of grinding of quartz in solutions of surfactants and inorganic electrolytes including some dispersants under different conditions of pH and ionic strength Mechanisms are examined by correlating the grinding effects with those obtained for the influence of these chemicals on zeta potential, pulp fluidity and flocculation/dispersion characteristics The analysis suggests grinding depends mainly on the state of aggregation of the ground products inside the mill and pulp fluidity Implications of the observed effects on ultrafine grinding in general are discussed

Under normal conditions, a significant amount of pyrite is recovered in the froth during flotation of high-sulfur coal. To reduce this pyrite recovery, it is first necessary to determine the primary recovery mechanism, because different measures are required for reducing entrainment, locked particle flotation or true hydrophobic flotation. In this paper, evidence is presented that suggests that hydrophobic flotation is not the major mechanism for recovery of liberated pyrite; instead, the bulk of the recovered pyrite results either from simple entrainment or from being physically locked with floatable coal particles.

Production of methane from coal seams requires hydrofracturing, and the length of a hydraulic fracture determines we11 spacing. Since the volume of fluid injected is known, the fracture length is the volume divided by average width and height. If the fracture is contained in the known height of the seam, then fracture width becomes the major factor con- trolling length. Width is proportional to coal compressibility; bulk compressibility is known to be larger than intrinsic compressibility. A method is given here to measure in-situ compressibility (a) from transient pressure testing. Theory linking flow in porous media with rock mechanical properties is reviewed. A consistent derivation of the porous flow equation is given incorporating 3-D deformation and the effective stress parameter "st&apos; linking changes in effective stress and pore pressure. The relations for "st&apos; in terms of a and intrinsic compressibility (ai) are substituted into the field measured porosity-compressibility product (net) and solved for a, the constrained matrix compressibility. In a field example, using 4 wells with an anisotropic analysis, the ratio of major to minor permeability was 17 for the Pratt A seam. a was found to be 6x10-5/psi as opposed to the laboratory value of 1.4x10-6/psi.

This paper focuses on tests performed on sandstones and shales from four gas wells in the Mesaverde formation. A previous document showed a comparison of the static and dynamic laboratory moduli. This publication describes how field velocity logs were used to derive field dynamic moduli. A 3-way comparison was then performed for these stiffness properties; the results show no agreement between the three sets of values. Differences between dynamic stiffness coefficients from the field and the laboratory exceed 200%; differences between static and dynamic coefficients range up to 600%. In turn, this indicates that a reliable method of estimating mechanical rock properties for hydraulic fracturing design has not been established, and that such a task should be pursued.

INTRODUCTION In looking over the diversity of the papers that are being presented during this meeting on The Industrial Practice of Fine Coal Processing one cannot help but be impressed with the progress the industry has made in beneficiating fine raw coals, and in the number of innovations that are under study to increase recovery and to improve the quality of the finest size particles produced at a preparation plant. Those who are not in our industry, who look at the technical program, might be confused, when they see that the papers include such topics as cleaning to zero and heavy media cyclone cleaning 28M x 100M; application and performance of fine coal jigs, tables, hydrocyclones, spirals, and flotation; filtration, dewatering and thermal drying; and ancilliary aspects such as fines handling, instrumentation and process control plus screening and liberation. This is an observation and not a criticism of the diversity of papers being presented. The program fits within the parameters of fine coal preparation as the term "coal preparation" is defined, but perhaps not as the term "fine coal" is defined. Admittedly these definitions are sometimes loose. However, each should be made more definitive if a meaningful fine coal preparation overview is to be possible. COAL PREPARATION DEFINED In the opinion of the writer, the term "coal preparation" should be defined as including all work activities that are performed on all components of a run-of-mine coal from the time it leaves a surface reserve or an underground portal, until all components are either ready for shipment or are stowed on, or in the earth in an environmentally acceptable manner. This definition excludes the work that is performed to improve coal quality or handleability inside the mine or pit. This work is commonly called "face" or "pit" preparation. FINE COAL DEFINED The term "fine coal" means different things to different people. In the past, anthracite finer than No. 3 Buckwheat (3/16 in.) was considered fines which often were discarded from the breaker as an unsalable by product; and bituminous coals finer that about 1/4 in. (slack) were either discarded or sold at cost to prevent an accumulation of "no bills" which referred to a product having no immediate sale. Although a standard definition of "fine coal" is yet to be accepted by the industry, a designation of coals by particle-size range has evolved through the wide use of three-circuit flowsheets, wherein the optimum size range by washer type determines the size fractions: a coarse-coal circuit for the plus 3/8 in., a -11- coal circuit for the 3/8 in. x 28 Mesh, and a fine-coal circuit for the remaining 28 Mesh x 0. Logically, the term "fine coal" should refer to some resultant size fraction or some top size by zero. This definition should include a 28 Mesh x 0 feed to a flotation cell but should exclude a 28 x 100 Mesh size fraction fed to a heavy media cyclone. Failure to include the resultant sizes in the definition precludes accounting of the full range of particle sizes present in the feed to the plant. Since the 28 Mesh x 0 fraction is treated in the final circuit of the three discreet washing circuits, now almost always used in U.S. commercial applications, and since it contains all of its resultant sizes, in the writer&apos;s opinion, it should be designated "fine coal". Increased emphasis has been placed on recycling consumer and industrial waste products. This trend has created a new industry that is focused on recovery/ separation of byproducts from waste material. As a result, interest has increased in the development of separation systems designed for the recycling industry. Much work has been done in this area. However, existing techniques developed for minerals beneficiation are often ignored. An example of is the foundry industry. There are currently more than 3,000 foundries in operation throughout the United States. Each consumes between 9 and 900 t/d (10 and 1,000 stpd) of sand for mold production. Either silica, chromite or zircon is, used in various combinations with chemical or clay binders. After casting, the sands are typically discarded into a landfill. This practice has become an environmental concern, especially the disposal of chromite and zircon. Silica sand is not environmentally sensitive. But it is used in greater abundance (6 to 7 Mt/a or 6.6 to 7.7 million stpy)and thus has prohibitive haulage and landfill costs. Current technology for sand reclamation involves thermal treatment to remove residual binders followed by dry mechanical attritioning (Leidel, 1993; Klein, 1994). This approach results in high losses due to fines generation and high costs associated with thermal treatment. As a result, this approach has shown only limited success. Stringent regulations are also affecting the disposal of secondary materials, such as plastics and metals. This is particularly true for the ferrous and nonferrous scrap metal industry. It plays a major role in industrial recycling of steel, aluminum and copper. Applications such as wire recycling present challenging problems since a hazardous byproduct (plastic insulation) is generated by the recycling.

Modern metallurgical processing often depends heavily on the use of flocculants to achieve the high levels of efficiency required. Selection of the optimum polymer can be complicated by the effects of process streams on the chemical and physical stability of the chosen polymer. Similarly, the presence of the polymer can have positive or negative side effects on process streams, such as phase disengagement in solvent extraction, foaming at filters and thickeners, crystal growth modification or flotation performance. Guidelines are given to highlight areas where problems may occur and suggestions made as to how these can be overcome. Practical advice on the preparation and application of polymers in process liquors is provided.

In ball milling the rates of breakage vary primarily with the size distribution of powder in the mill. Using an approximate solution to the batch-grinding equation, the acceleration and deceleration of breakage rates of all individual size classes are determined when the grinding environment is varied. Experimental results with limestone and copper ore show time-dependent breakage rates under both dry and wet grinding conditions. The effect of grinding additives on breakage rates is also studied. In general, breakage rates increase for coarse sizes and decrease for fine sizes with an increase in the fines present in the mill. Such variations have strong implications in closed-circuit grinding.

All known bauxite deposits in China occur in its eastern half, and almost all of them are found in the Carboniferous and the Permian. They are of platform origin, but contain diaspore as the major ore mineral. There is only one known deposit composed of gibbsite. The most valuable deposits are sedimentary ones formed in local depressions on the edges of platforms during marine transgressions. They lie on Upper Cambrian or Middle Ordovician limestone that was weathered for a long period of geological time. Generally, Chinese bauxites are low in iron, and have a rather low alumina/silica ratio.

This paper describes the innovative procedures employed during the construction of 3 deep shafts within the confines of New York City. The shafts, which varied in diameter from 1.8m (6ft) to 7.3m (24ft) and had an overall depth of 199m (650ft), were excavated by both mechanical and conventional methods. These were subsequently concrete lined, clad steel riser pipes installed and associated surface structures were constructed. Tricky surface rock blasting coupled with the unearthing of unexpected obstructions caused constant uncertainty during the excavation phase. In addition, the necessity of handling men and material in restricted yet deep openings required the development of a safer and more productive shaft construction procedure.

A study of the feasibility of using acoustic signals to detect discontinuities ahead of excavation has shown that reflecting interfaces in a homogeneous rock can be easily identified. Moreover, discontinuity interfaces in a very complex field site (where the rock face was weathered, was full of jointed rocks, and had a destressed zone running along the mine walls) could be identified with a reasonable level of confidence, using a cross-correlation technique for signal processing. The results of this study go a long way toward proving the feasibility of the technique. However, further development work is needed to optimize an operating system in a hard rock environment where boring machines are used for excavation.

The advent of solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX-EW) technology for recovery of copper from low grade oxide ores has extended the operational lives of many historic mines in the western United States, and made many other orebodies economically viable worldwide. Many of these operations are mature and face closure within the next decade, depending on market conditions. Closure of a large copper heap leach operation has not been undertaken, and differs in some important chemical respects from closure of gold leach pads. Challenges for closure include prediction of solution chemistry and draindown characteristics, determining the benefit of cover placement in semi-arid climates and evaluation of solution management strategies once the economics of copper recovery are no longer favorable. This paper discusses issues pertinent to copper heap closure in semi-arid and arid climates, and strategies for their management.
